Sesshomaru had always prided himself in the past, before Kagome and Hanna were taken from him, for his intelligence and keen ability to strategize from one moment to the next.
From a young age he had learned to quell his emotions giving him, most of the time, a calmness that allowed him to assess situations quickly and calculate what his next move should be.
The legal woes they were currently facing were no different but he took no sense of accomplishment when he settled with the Tanakas out of court.
They were given enough not just for the boys medical bills but also to ensure he received the best education money could buy, they seemed placated.
A hefty donation was made to the social care services along with the understanding that whatever case may have been built against them would be swept under the rug by the directors.
The magistrate named his own price to which Sesshomaru accommodated to have the entire case dismissed in the eyes of the courts. It took some time and doing but once it was done they didn't need to worry about anymore interference.
Since Hanna had been removed from school Sesshomaru approached Kagome on what they should do, be it enroll her in a different school or they take the opportunity to personally train her.
Sitting in the garden together under the tree in the center he could sense the depression that came off of her in waves.
Being on bed rest and having a miscarriage scare along with the possibility that they could loose their daughter she hadn't been herself.
"Whatever you think is best mate." Kagome said softly staring at the ground.
"I want to know what you would like to do. This isn't just my decision." Sesshomaru stated taking her hand in his trying to coax her fingers through his. Limply she grabbed his hand.
"I don't care. I just don't care." She replied.
"Alright." He relented. "Then I will train her on how to use her energy. Perhaps she would enjoy learning martial arts from Inuyasha, it would be a step in teaching her discipline."
"Sure." Kagome gave a small shrug.
"We can ask if Shippo would tutor her on her academics. He does well with his and Rins kits."
"Okay."
"Talk to me Kagome." Sesshomaru said finally moving to sit in front of her. "Little one, it isn't uncommon for a woman to suffer from depression during her pregnancy, tell me what what you need."
"I don't want to talk about it." She said.
"About what? What is on your mind?"
"You really don't want me to tell you." Shaking her head and closing her eyes she let go of his hand.
"Yes. I do." As she reopened her eyes he saw something in them that hadn't been directed at him for centuries. There was a determination set in her orbs that had defied him in the past when they were enemies. "Kagome?"
"We never should have been together." Her voice was low but steady. "This…this is all a mistake."
"That isn't true." Sesshomaru said. "A lot has happened and it's okay to be afraid. You're in fight or flight mode."
"You have no idea how I feel right now." Kagome set her jaw and sighed. "I slept with you because I was terrified you were going to kill me. Then, I was pregnant and all of my friends turned on me. You showed up and said you'd be there, then you just started taking advantage of the situation and began fucking me on a regular basis."
"That was a mutual decision. If this one recalls you were the one who initiated further mating."
"I was fifteen years old. I was scared and sick and I just wanted things to feel better. So, yeah, I did because it was what you were offering and I needed something." Kagome quipped.
"Then say it." Sesshomaru coaxed.
"You did rape me." Kagome sighed out. "You took advantage of me."
"Yes." He agreed.
"I don't want this." Kagome said. "I'm done. Once this baby's born, I want out."
"Very well." Swallowing down the lump in his throat Sesshomaru straightened himself out. "Inform me of whatever arrangements you make and if you need assistance."
Standing he turned to walk away. "I want to go live abroad, attend school…I just want to be a normal person my age. I want to live my life and make my own decisions."
"This Sesshomaru will ensure that you have a chance at the life that you wish to achieve." Closing his eyes he turned back to her and took a knee in front of her. "Thank you Kagome for our children. Thank you for giving so much of yourself to me, I will cherish the time we had for the rest of my life."
"I do love you. I love both of our children. Never, ever doubt that but I just…I need this. Maybe I'll come back, maybe I will just be here as your friend and co-parent…I don't know." She replied.
"Kagome, I won't force you to stay with me but I will not have you in and out of our children's lives. You will either be here for them or you won't. There is no in between." Sesshomaru said bringing his gaze back to hers.
"Okay." Watching as Sesshomaru stood again this time leaving her to her own thoughts. "There, I did it. I hope you're happy with however this turns out."
Staring up at the sky she knew her voice had been heard.
Briskly walking up the stairs to his study he closed the door and stood behind it with his back against it. His mind ran through possibilities at a dizzying pace, why she suddenly wanted to leave, ways to fix it, or just to simply let her go to placate her.
Exhaling all of the air from his lungs he took a sharp breath allowing himself a few moments of panic at the idea that Kagome wanted to leave him.
Everything she said had been a truth they both knew but had never voiced no matter how many times she fought against it spoken by other people.
Moving to his desk he picked up the picture she had placed on it. Hanna was an infant, a newborn. Kagome held her in the garden as he held her with both of them looking at their daughter.
Gripping the frame tightly she let out a growl. Furiously he swiped everything else form his desk to crash onto the wooden floor.
All of it; his profession, the house, his integration into human society, to his very appearance had been for her. Every step he made Kagome had always been a very present part of his life regardless of the distance between them.
With each passing season and every year he knew he was getting closer to her, that he was closing the gap of time to reunite with her again and to finally ensure hers and Hannas well being.
Sitting on the edge of the desk he continued to stare at their picture at a loss as to what to do for the first time in centuries.
With Hanna sitting between them on the couch it was mutually decided they would tell her of their separation together.
"Hanna, your Papa and I have decided that we won't be living together anymore." Kagome said evenly. "After your brother is born I'm going to move away to go to school somewhere else, to live somewhere else."
"Mama, what?" Looking desperately between her parents her eyes began to shimmer with unshed tears. "No!"
"It doesn't mean I don't love you or your brother or your papa it's just…it's what I have to do." Kagome continued.
"Who made you?" Hanna asked her eyes narrowing down to slits.
"No one. Just me Hanna. It's me."
"No, no, no, no….somebody made you." She reiterated. "I can smell it on you." Her small voice going lower. "It's like burning and…um, hate. They hate us."
"There's nothing going on Hanna other than the that I just want to…"
"Stop it!" Hanna shouted turning to Sesshomaru. "Papa can't you see? Smell it? Mamas being taken from us!"
"Hm." Snaking his eyes from his daughter to her mother he took her hands in his. "Tell me."
"You don't understand…I'll protect all of you." Kagome whispered her eyes shining with tears.
"How will leaving protect us?"
"Just…trust me, please"
"Kagome, look at me." Sesshomaru said.
Turning her head away he placed his hand against her cheek. "Whatever has been said to you, whomever or whatever has whispered in your ear is an untruth to get you away from us to strike."
"I don't know what to do. Sesshomaru, he threatened our sons life…he said that he could just snap his fingers and it would be like our baby never existed."
"Whom?"
"Amatsu-Mikaboshi." She whispered out fearfully.
"The god of evil chaos appeared to you?" Sesshomaru asked. "That isn't possible, he was imprisoned in the underworld centuries before I was ever born."
"By your parents." She replied. Feeling as if the floor dropped out from underneath him he stood quickly grabbing his daughter and pulling Kagome up.
"We must leave." Handing Hanna to Kagome he went to grab his swords. "If it is war the trickster wishes to have then it is war this Sesshomaru is more than willing to bring."
