Lucifer Morningstar sat at the piano in his club, Lux, playing it slowly and sadly. He's been playing the same song over and over again for a month. The month that Chloe Decker has been gone. After the incident with Pierce and her finally seeing his devil face and realizing who he really is. Sighing, he keeps playing the song, singing the lyrics he has sung over and over again as time slips by, clubbers coming and going until he is all alone, playing the piano,
When you were here before
Couldn't look you in the eye
You're just like an angel
Your skin makes me cry
You float like a feather
In a beautiful world
Oh, I wish I was special
You're so very special
But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong
She's running
Out again
She's running
Running out
Lucifer sighed and whispers, "Again." But then he hears a gun next to his head. "Have I played that song too much?" Lucifer asked, finally looking up at the man with the gun to his head and noticing that it's just himself, the gunman, and the gunman's crew in the club with him. "I have, haven't I? Still, there are far less drastic ways to put in a new song request. What's your poison? Poison? ABBA?" The gunman, wearing a black mask, answered, "Revenge." "I'm not familiar," Lucifer said. "But if you hum a few bars, I beet I can keep up." The gunman, irritated, pulls off his mask to reveal the same man that Lucifer met over a year ago when he found himself in the desert with just his pants and new angel wings on his back and hitched a ride with him, later stealing the van and some of his clothes.
"Well," Lucifer said, standing up to face the gunman. "If it isn't Mr. Said Out Bitch. I'm glad to see you've recovered from your adventures in the desert." Lucifer walks towards the bar with the gunman, named Lee, following him and said, "I almost died because of you." Lucifer huffed and said, "You were driving a stolen Brink's truck full of cash. Because of me you're not in jail forever. You're welcome." He reaches over the bar and pulls out some whiskey and a glass. He walks to a table and pours the whiskey in the glass as Lee said, "I was walking around in the desert for days. I barely survived. It got so bad that I started hallucinating. I remember you having wings." The other gunmen kept their guns pointed at Lucifer, who sighed and said, "You remember correctly. But I'm different now." He downed his drink as Lee continued, "I don't know what that means and I don't care. I needed that money. I did my research on you. You're loaded. So pay up."
Lucifer turned to Lee and said, "I think your research may have been a little…" He reached out to the gun and using his superior celestial strength, bent the gun's barrel down so that it was unusable. "Inadequate," Lucifer finished. Lee dropped the gun and looked up at Lucifer in fear. Lucifer's eyes glowed red as he grabbed Lee with both hands and hoisted him up from the ground. Lee whimpered, "I didn't hallucinate, did I?" "What do you feel?" Lucifer asked. "Confusion? Disgust? Terror?" "Mostly terror," Lee answered.
"I wonder if that's what she felt," Lucifer said, clearly talking about Chloe. "Who?" Lee asked confused. His other gunmen opened fire and shot at Lucifer, but being the devil, the bullets did no harm to him, especially since Chloe wasn't around to make him vulnerable. "The Detective, of course," Lucifer answered. He dropped Lee to the ground as the other gunmen charged at Lucifer, who fought them off easily. "You see, recently, she discovered my true nature. And in that moment, as I waited to see what her reaction would be…" He threw one of the gunmen clear across the room as he finished, "The police streamed in, pulled her away. I mean, she'd been shot after all." One gunman charged at him, but Lucifer grabbed him and put his arm around the gunman's neck as he continued, "She was gone. She'd left Los Angeles on a vacation." He tossed thee gunman away and said, "That was a month ago. I've been telling myself she's simply processing what she learned." He blocked a gunman trying to stab him with a knife and twisted the man's arm, making the knife go into the man instead and tossed him away. "I mean, it can be quite jarring to discover someone's actually the Devil. What if she's already made up her mind? What if she's decided that I am evil incarnate? And what if she's right?"
Lucifer kneeled down to Lee's level and stared at him with his red eyes. Lee whimpered, "Don't kill me, man. Please, I'm just a thief. That's all." "That's not true," Lucifer said. "Excuse me?" Lee asked. "That's not all you are," Lucifer said. He then pulled Lee up and dragged him up to his penthouse and started to grab money and valuable items and put them in Lee's arms saying, "Don't get me wrong, you are indeed a thief, but perhaps you deserve a chance to prove to people that's not all you are. Right, there you go. Money to cover any debts that you owe, pay for your friends downstairs' medical bills, and have a chance of a new life. A chance for people to see you in a different way." "This is a trick, right?" Lee asked, struggling to hold everything that was given to him. Lucifer sighed and asked, "You need a show of faith on top of all this? Very well. Since I left you trouser less on our last two encounters, how about I balance the scales?" He proceeded to take off his pants and held them up to Lee, leaving him with just a shirt on. Lee did not like that and said, "OK. Um, we're even now. Sort of. Can I just go now?" Lucifer sighed, put his pants back on, and said, "Absolutely."
Lee walked toward the elevator just as it was opening up to reveal Maze. "What's up?" Maze asked Lee as he was passing by. Lee muttered something as he got in the elevator and left. "Hey," Maze told Lucifer. "So I saw the dead guys downstairs." "They're not dead, Mazikeen," Lucifer said as he finished putting his pants back on and walked to the bar in his penthouse. Maze sighed and said, "All the more reason why you should have called. What? Are you still upset about me trying to betray you and kill you? It was a month ago." Lucifer poured himself a drink as he answered, "No of course not. What do you think I am? Human? No, I just got carried away in a moment." "And you're still worried about Decker," Maze pointed out. "I offered to find her. I am a bounty hunter. All you have to do is ask." "The Detective is still processing my Devil face," Lucifer said. "The last thing she needs is a demon tracking her down." He gave her the drink as he turned to make himself one as Maze said, "Or you're trying to avoid things." "Oh, nice try," Lucifer said, holding his own drink. "What?" Maze asked. "The Detective took her little offspring along on the trip," Lucifer answered. "You're just looking for an excuse to track her down, aren't you?"
Maze was about to say no, but realized that Lucifer was right. Sighing she said, "Maybe. But Chloe will be back and then I can apologize to Trixie." "You know," Lucifer said. "Mazikeen, I'm starting to think it's not a question of when, but if they come back." Maze sighed into her drink and said, "Still, that kid deserves an apology." Lucifer chuckled to himself and said, "It still surprises me how the Detective's offspring has you wrapped around her little finger. And here I thought you were like me, who hates the little creatures." "That's not entirely true," Maze argued. "Kids are still terrible, but Trixie's different. She's special. Maybe if you had a kid yourself, then maybe you will understand." Lucifer chuckled and said, "Maze, remember, celestials can't have children. Unless somehow we were made human or temporarily became human, then we could. Why else have I not had any of my one night stands get pregnant? Besides, look at me. If by some miracle I have a child, would they want to be around me? Knowing who I really am? No child wants the Devil as their father." Maze chuckled and said, "Still, maybe having any kid around you might do you some good."
Elsewhere, in a alley of Los Angeles, a portal mysteriously appeared. The revving of an engine could be heard and a figure on a vespa drove through the portal, with the portal closing behind him. The figure stopped the vespa and pulled off his helmet to reveal Carlos De Vil, wearing his white leather outfit he wore during the Audrey incident and shook out his white hair with dark roots. "So," Carlos said looking around. "This is Los Angeles. Or at least one part of it. Seems similar to the Isle to me." He reached into the backpack he was wearing and pulled out an apple to eat. Before he could take a bite, he saw a homeless man sitting nearby. Sighing, he got off his vespa and walked over to the man, kneeling down and asked, "Do you need something to eat?" The man looked at Carlos confused, but nodded. Carlos handed him the apple and said, "Hear. You look like you need it more than I do." The man nodded and took the apple and said, "Thanks, man." "No problem," Carlos said, standing back up and walked back to his vespa.
But before he could get back on his vehicle, he saw someone walking towards him with ill intentions. "Look what we have here," the man said. Carlos sighed, turned to the man, and said, "Look, let's not get into this. I have somewhere I have to be." The man chuckled and pulled out a knife and said, "You're not going anywhere until you give me your valuables." Carlos chuckled and said, "A thief. Thought you looked like one. I was one myself once. Trust me, dude, you do not want to mess with me."
The man charged at Carlos, but Carlos stepped out of the way and grabbed the man's hand with the knife, and twisted it, hard, and Carlos could hear bones breaking in the man's hand. Carlos put his other hand around the man's throat and raised him up against the wall, showing he was much stronger than he looked. The man looked down at Carlos terrified and muttered, "Hey man. Maybe we can come to an arrangement." Carlos chuckled and said, "Not a chance. I am smarter than you think, so I know that I don't take deals from people like you. I may look small and meek, which to be fair, I was for most of my life, but I am so much more than that. And I am here on a mission. And you are not going to get in the way of that." Carlos' eyes started to glow red as the man whimpered, "What are you?" Carlos smiled darkly and whispered, "Just call me De Vil." He then threw the man several yards away with his superior strength as he shouted, "Leave here and don't come back! Think about your life choices." The man landed hard on thee ground and whimpered in pain.
Carlos closed his eyes and took some deep breaths to calm himself down and when he opened his eyes, they were back to their usual brown. "I hate doing that," Carlos muttered to himself. "Control. Get back in control." He looked around and saw the homeless man quivering a bit and Carlos said, "It's OK. I'm not going to hurt you. Just please calm down." Surprisingly the man instantly calmed down. Carlos smiled and said, "I'm sure you won't see that man here again. Why don't you find somewhere else to sleep tonight?" The man nodded as though he was in a trance and stood up, still holding the apple, and walked away. Carlos sighed and said, "At least I had better control there. Now, time to start what I came here for."
He walked back over to the vespa and sat on it. He reached into his backpack and pulled out Evie's magic mirror. She had insisted that he take it so that he could find whatever he needed. It took some heated discussions with Fairy Godmother to allow him to take it from the museum, but Jane luckily got through to her. Carlos sighed happily. "Jane," Carlos thought. "I miss you already." Shaking his head, he reached into his backpack again and pulled out a ring with a green gem on it. "The Ring of Envy," Carlos thought. "Mother's prized possession. All of her magical powers locked into this as she was taken to the Isle of the Lost. Her powers of illusion hopefully will come in handy." He put the ring on a chain and put that chain around his neck. He closed his eyes and concentrated on the ring's power. After a few moments, he opened his eyes and held up Evie's mirror and saw that the ring did what he wanted it to do. His white hair with dark roots now was a head full of dark brown curls on the top neatly brushed looking properly hairsprayed. "That'll do the trick," Carlos said. "Now I look more normal for this place. Now, Magic Mirror, show me Lucifer Morningstar." The mirror showed him Lucifer sitting in his penthouse, sipping his whiskey. Carlos took a shaking breath and said, "Mirror, mirror, show me where Lucifer Morningstar is." The mirror complied and showed him the outside of Lux. "Guide me there," Carlos instructed the mirror. The mirror then started to act like a GPS and Carlos put his helmet back on and revved up the vespa and sped away, driving into the night.
The next morning Lucifer heard about a new case. He decided that even though the Detective wasn't back yet, he still wanted to help as he was a consultant for the LAPD. He walked in front of Lux where his car was waiting. He didn't see someone watching him from afar, that person being Carlos. The boy stared at the man and whispered, "There he is. I found him. But now, how to meet him properly. I guess I really haven't thought this first step through. I just wanted to find him after Mom…" Carlos shook his head in frustration. He didn't like thinking about his mom. She treated him horribly in his childhood. But after their last conversation when Carlos visited her on the Isle after the barrier was destroyed by Mal, Carlos knew that he had to find Lucifer Morningstar. He was the key to helping him figure out who he truly is. He looked up and saw Lucifer driving away. Carlos pulled out the mirror and whispered, "Mirror, mirror, show me where he is going." The mirror showed a field within some trees surrounded with yellow tape and policemen. "So, a crime scene, huh?" Carlos whispered. "Should be interesting." He revved up his vespa and drove after Lucifer.
Lucifer arrived at the crime scene and saw that Dan, Ella, and other police officers were at the scene. He tried to walk past Dan, but Dan stopped him and said, "Go home, Lucifer." Lucifer smiled at Dan and replied, "Well, good morning to you as well, Detective Douche." Dan sighed and said, "Chloe's still not here and we don't need you, so…" "Regardless," Lucifer interrupted. "I am still a consultant with the LAPD, and oh yes, you have no authority over me whatsoever, so there's that." "Yeah, right," Dan said, shoving past Lucifer.
Carlos watched all of this from atop a tree. "Man," Carlos whispered. "That guy is a douche. But I've met worse ones."
Meanwhile, Lucifer turned towards Ella, who said, "Dan doesn't mean it. Losing Charlotte screwed him up really bad." Lucifer sighed and said, "And I sympathize with what Daniel's going through, but I refuse to be a scapegoat for which something I bear no responsibility. It's a theme in my life." Ella stood up from where she was taking pictures of the dead body and said, "It's gonna take him a while, Lucifer. It's gonna take all of us a while. I'm still not straight with the big guy. Not sure I ever will be." "Well," Lucifer said. "His loss if so, Miss Lopez."
Ella smiled at Lucifer's comment, then cleared her throat and asked, "So, you want the deets?" "Uh," Lucifer said. "Actually no. I didn't want to give Daniel the satisfaction, but I think it's time I stopped coming to crime scenes." "You mean," Ella replied. "You're done showing up, checking to see if Chloe's here and then heading out without helping at all?" "Yes," Lucifer answered. "I've been holding on to a false hope, it seems. Quite foolish, really, that one day she's just stroll up."
Ella looked behind Lucifer, who looked behind him and saw Chloe, much to his amazement, walk up to the pair. Chloe looked at the two and said, "Hey, sorry I'm late." Ella ran up and hugged Chloe, as that's something she always did. "Detective," Lucifer muttered. "Oh my God!" Ella squealed. "How was the vacation? Where did you go? Why are you not more tanned?" "Listen," Chloe explained. "I'll catch you up on everything, I promise, but first, what's happening?" Ella nodded and said, "Yeah, of course. So our victim is a 55 year old beekeeper named Bob Goldbach. Cause of death, honey scraper to the neck. Gnarly thing, right? Who knew beekeeping was kind of badass?" "It looks like one of the hives was attacked," Chloe observed. "So maybe Bob caught the killer stomping on his poor bees and they fought." "Possibly," Chloe suggested. "Any witnesses?" "None," Ella answered. "But Bob's wife, Lenore, is over here." "OK," Chloe replied. "Great, thanks. I'll go talk to her. Good work, Ella." "Sure," Ella said as Chloe walked over to where the wife was being interrogated. Lucifer just stood there the entire time staring at Chloe in disbelief. Ella walked over to Lucifer and said, "God, Chloe's back. We can finally get back to normal."
Carlos looked at Lucifer and whispered, "Chloe huh? He seems to like like her. Interesting. But it seems that something happened between the two of them. Maybe they'll talk about it."
Chloe started interviewing Lenore, who sniffled, "No one hated Bob. He was a gentle soul. He never even raised his voice." "And you can't think of anybody who may have wanted to hurt him?" "I can't," Lenore answered. "We sell honey at the farmer's market together. It's just one big family over there."
Lenore saw Lucifer walk up to Chloe, starting at her. Chloe saw this and whispered to Lucifer, "I'm right in the middle of something. Go on, Lenore." Lenore nodded and said, "I can't imagine…" But Lucifer was making her uncomfortable. Chloe sighed and said, "I'm so sorry, excuse me. Could I speak with you, Lucifer?" Lucifer nodded and Chloe pulled him aside and said, "Lucifer, here husband was just murdered." Lucifer just stared at Chloe and asked, "Are you OK?" "Yea, I'm fine," Chloe answered. "Where did you go?" Lucifer asked. "Oh," Chloe answered. "I took Trixie to Europe and we traveled around and, you know, it gave me time to process what I saw." "And have you processed?" Lucifer asked. "Are you OK with what you saw? Detective, are you OK with me?" "It's not like you haven't always told me the truth," Chloe replied. "So, I think, deep down, I just, I always knew." "But how does it make you feel?" Lucifer asked. "Afraid? Terrified? Do you want to yell at me? Punch me in the face? Run away again?" Chloe sighed and said, "I think I just want to get back to work." "That's all?" Lucifer asked. "That's all," Chloe replied. She turned and walked back to Lenore to finish the interview. Lucifer stood there, shell shocked. He couldn't process what Chloe just said.
Carlos heard all of this and thought, "Chloe must have figured out who Lucifer really is. But it sounds like he has a different appearance. Makes sense since he's the Devil." He looked up and saw Lucifer walking back to his car so Carlos jumped down from the tree, running to his vespa to drive off after Lucifer.
Lucifer drove right to Linda's, his therapist, office and started to have another session with her about what just happened with Chloe. "I'm glad I've come to talk to you all these years, Linda," Lucifer said, pacing the room. "You've opened my eyes, helped me understand how emotions work." Linda sat in her chair and said, "Thank you, Lucifer. That's wonderful to hear." Lucifer then sat down on the sofa and continued, "Once again, your insight has helped me come to a realization. The Detective is clearly in denial." "Ah," Linda said. "Of course." Lucifer continued, "How else to explain her complete non-reaction to my true self? Help me, Doctor. Help me help her. "Well," Linda asked. "What did you want to hear from her?" "What I want isn't important," Lucifer answered. "I disagree," Linda replied. "What Chloe is going through is incredibly difficult. Trust me, I know from experience. But I'm your therapist. Not hers. And I wonder if whether you expected her to reject you. Maybe even wanted her to."
"Well," Lucifer asked. "Why on earth would I want her to reject me?" "Because your Devil face has returned and you've refused to talk about it," Linda answered. Lucifer scoffed, "There's not much to say, really. I killed a human for the first time, my Devil face returned." "I don't think it's as simple as that," Linda replied. "Killing a human is against your father's rules, not your own. And you've recently learned that angels self-actualize." Lucifer thought for a moment, then said, "So you think that I'm punishing myself for killing a human?" Linda sighed and said, "I'm wondering if you're punishing yourself for enjoying it." Lucifer scoffed, "So what if I did?" "Then perhaps that's why you see yourself as evil again. And perhaps that's why you want Chloe to reject you." "I don't want her to reject me," Lucifer said. "She told you she's fine," Linda replied. "What if what she told you is actually simply the truth?" "And what if it isn't?" Lucifer asked. "She'll find a way to let you know," Linda replied. Lucifer sighed and said, "So you're saying I should just act as if everything is as she claims, then slowly poke at her denial and find a way to pop the bubble." Linda sighed and said, "I know nothing I can say is going to stop you fro doing that. But all I can ask is take it slowly." Lucifer laughed and said, "Of course, Doctor. Baby steps."
What the pair didn't know was that Carlos was listening in outside the building, using the mirror to spy on the conversation. Carlos hated doing it as soon as he realized it was a therapy session, but hearing what Lucifer said shook him a little. "So he killed someone recently," Carlos whispered. "His first one. That seems…less horrible than I pictured him for. He seems happy in these sessions. But I still need to find a way to talk to him. Ugh, why is this so frustrating? Just be a man Carlos, like Dude always says. And to think, the dog wanted to come but I think this place would be shocked to see a talking dog." He looked down and saw that Lucifer was heading to the LAPD and Carlos groaned, "Great, I can't follow him there. Just I'll keep watch and find the perfect moment."
Lucifer was in the lab at LAPD looking at Ella with Chloe standing nearby as Lucifer said, "I'm the Devil." "Lucifer, what are you doing?" Chloe asked. "Detective," Lucifer answered. "It's time Miss Lopez finally knew the truth. I am the angel to led a rebellion against my father, God. I was banished to Hell afterwards, where I ruled as king over the souls of the damned." "Lucifer," Ella said. "It all makes sense now." But then Ella smiled and said, "Damn it, I tried to keep a straight face, I really did. Man, how? How do you stay in character like that?" Lucifer chuckled, "It's simple really. It's all true. Oh, and my brother, Amenadiel, he's an angel." "Ah," Ella said, playing along. "Does he have wings?" "He does again actually," Lucifer replied. They both laughed as Chloe shook her head. "You think he could give me a ride?" Ella sarcastically asked. "You should ask him," Lucifer answered. Ella looked at Chloe and said, "This guy. You're so funny!" Lucifer smiled and said while looking at Chloe, "Why would you think that I'm not telling the truth, Miss Lopez?" Ella answered, "I stopped trying to figure that out years ago. I mean, hey, we all got our quirks, right?" "Mine is that I'm, like, actually the Devil," Lucifer replied. "Oh right!" Ella said while laughing, not believing him.
Chloe sighed and said, "Oh, so do you have any new info on the case, Ella?" "Yes," Ella said while gathering materials to show off. "So, it turns out the honey scraper couldn't have belonged to the victim's collection, because it had, wait for it, honey on it." "And isn't that the point?" Chloe asked. Ells shook her head and answered, "Bob and Lenore's specialty was varietals, you know, blueberry honey, cinnamon honey. But this right here, good, old-fashioned plain honey, honey." "So this honey came from somewhere else," Chloe realized. "So maybe a rival came with his own tools to destroy the hive." "And then used it to kill Bob when he caught him," Lucifer added. "How devilish. And I would know, after all." "You're the Devil," Ella sarcastically said. Lucifer laughed and said, "I really am." Chloe looked at him with a stern look and Lucifer cleared his throat and followed her out of the lab and they headed to her car to drive to the farmer's market.
Carlos put down the mirror after he heard the conversation and whispered, "So they have a lead. Maybe I could follow them and see if I can finally talk with Lucifer. This following him around is getting exhausting." He ran over to his vespa and drove off where the mirror was leading him.
Lucifer and Chloe ended up at the farmer's market and started to walk around with Lucifer saying, "Isn't this fun, Detective?" "What's that?" Chloe asked. "Well," Lucifer answered. "Now you know the truth about me and, as you said, fine with it, we can both be in on the joke. You can watch humans twist themselves into pretzels to justify what I tell them instead of considering the most obvious answer." "I think it's kind of mean," Chloe revealed. "What?" Lucifer asked. Chloe sighed and said, "Well, no one in their right mind is going to believe that you're actually, you know, the Devil, without proof. So of course they're going to try and figure out the metaphor." "Or perhaps you're just smarting from never figuring it out yourself." "Maybe a little bit," Chloe revealed.
They arrived at the victim's honey stand and Chloe said, "So here's Bob and Lenore's stand. They're newer to the farmers' market. Whereas Pure Honey, they've been here for years. Maybe they didn't like the competition moving next door." "Destroy the rival and suddenly he's back to being queen bee," Lucifer realized. "Detective, since you're clearly comfortable with my devilishness, care to see my mojo in action?" "Sure," Chloe answered. "Why not?" Chloe walked to the Pure Honey stand as Lucifer said, "Right." and followed after her.
The owner of Pure Honey, Glenn, saw Lucifer and Chloe walk up and he said, "Welcome. What can I get for you?" Chloe answered, "Uh, LAPD, Detective Decker. Do you own this stand?" "Yeah," Glenn answered. "Glenn Dobbs." Lucifer smiled and walked up to Glenn and said, "Lovely, Tell me, Glenn, what is it you desire?" "Excuse me?" Glenn asked. "Well," Lucifer answered. "I like to draw out all those naughty, hidden desires of humanity. Though, you seem like someone who really wants to unburden himself." Glenn started to stutter, but Lucifer kept his eye contact on Glenn as Glenn revealed, "I want Bob Goldbach to die." "Oh," Lucifer said as Glenn shook his head. "Case solved, Detective. Here I was, worried we'd be rusty." "You want him to die?" Chloe asked. "Why? Because he was going to threaten your business?" "What?" Glenn asked confused. "No. It's because I'm terrified of him." Lucifer chuckled, "You're terrified of Bob? Chubby, harmless, and very dead Bob?" "Bob's dead?" Glenn asked. "Oh, thank God. I can finally relax." "Why we're you scared of Bob?" Chloe asked. Glenn sighed and said, "Let's talk in private." He put up a "Be Back Soon" sign and walked to the back of his stand for privacy, Chloe and Lucifer followed.
Glenn turned to them and said, "OK, fine. I destroyed their beehive. I was pissed that Bob and Lenore's gimmicky honey was putting my stand out of business. I mean, avocado honey? Come on. I'm from LA and even I think that's going too far." "But when Bob caught you, you killed him, didn't you?" Lucifer suggested. "No," Glenn revealed. "I went home, and a couple of hours later, Bob showed up at my front door." "So he confronted you," Chloe realized. "What did he say?" "Say?" Glenn mocked. "He didn't say anything." He then lifted up his shirt to reveal several circular bruises on his abdomen, wincing in pain. "Bob did that to you?" Chloe asked. Glenn nodded and said, "It was like he was a different person. He wasn't angry. He was so calm. It made it even scarier, you know?" "What did you do after he left?" Chloe asked. "Are you kidding me?" Glenn mocked again. "I went to the hospital." "Right," Lucifer said. "Show me again." Glenn lifted his shirt again to show Lucifer his bruises as Lucifer said, "Detective, I have definitely seen work like this before, in Hell. You know, where I'm…Never mind. A bag of billiard balls perhaps. Not quite round enough, is it?" "It was doorknobs of all things," Glenn revealed. "I mean, who does that?"
Carlos saw all of this from a few feet away and hummed to himself, "Poor guy. Though the Gaston twins used other fun items to terrorize their prey." Carlos looked around and saw a man also watching Lucifer and Chloe. He saw the gun on the man's belt and saw the man walk after Lucifer and Chloe. Carlos panicked, "Uh oh. He looks dangerous. Maybe this is the perfect time to intervene and introduce myself."
Lucifer and Chloe were walking through the farmer's market after their talk with Glenn as Chloe said, "Huh, well, his story checks out. Glenn was at the hospital at the time of death." "Oh," Lucifer replied. "So Bob wasn't as mild mannered as we first thought." "Hm," Chloe agreed. "Apparently not. But a bag of doorknobs? It's so specific. Was it a message?" "If so," Lucifer replied. "It was lost on that poor chap." Chloe noticed the weird man behind her and grabbed her sunglasses to look at its reflection. "What on earth are you doing?" Lucifer asked. "I think we're being followed," Chloe whispered. "Looks like he's got a gun."
Chloe led Lucifer to a storage space and they both hid behind the doors. Chloe pulled out her gun as Lucifer said, "Detective, this is a chance for me to use my devilish strength. You can see what I'm truly capable of." "Or," Chloe countered. "I can just point my gun at him and yell freeze!" "Oh, come on," Lucifer begged. "I've never really seen how far I can actually throw a human. Joking. Mostly."
But before Chloe could respond, the mystery man flew through the door past them and into some boxes clear on the other side of the room. Lucifer and Chloe looked shocked as they saw the man groan and try to get up. The pair saw a boy they didn't recognize walk through the door, Carlos, wearing his white leather pants with black and red accents, a white and black T-shirt with his crossbones symbol on the back, red fingerless leather gloves, his mother's ring hidden underneath his shirt, and the dark brown curly hair on the top of his head disguising his normal white straight hair thanks to the ring. He smirked as he walked in and saw the shocked looks on Lucifer and Chloe's faces. "What?" Carlos asked. "I heard "Throw him" so I grabbed him and threw him. You're welcome." Lucifer didn't know what to make of the kid as he thought, "Where the bloody Hell did this child come from?"
Chloe responded by pulling out her gun and shouting, "Freeze, kid! LAPD. Put your hands in the air, now!" Carlos complied, but said, "Hey, lady, relax. This guy was following the two of you for a while. I thought you wanted to catch him." Lucifer remembered the man on the ground and walked over to him and grabbed onto his throat and hoisted him up into the air. "Lucifer, no!" Chloe shouted at Lucifer, keeping her gun aimed at Carlos. Lucifer turned to Chloe and said, "I see you're not as comfortable with my true nature as you claim." He turned to Carlos and saw no shock in the boy's eyes, making Lucifer more puzzled. Chloe shouted, "What? No, it's not that. He's got a badge." Lucifer dropped the man to the ground, who coughed loudly, trying to catch his breath. Chloe asked, "Why were you following us?" "Because your victim was in witness protection," The man revealed as he stood up, holding his badge. "US Marshal Luke Reynolds. Hi. And you, kid, are in trouble for assaulting a US officer of the law." Carlos sighed and said, "Hey, man, sorry about that. I didn't see the badge. I just wanted to help these two out." "And why did you want to help us out?" Lucifer asked. Carlos shrugged and said, "Wanted to be a good citizen. But it seems I picked the wrong time to introduce myself and it looks like you three have some catching up to do, so I'm outta here."
Chloe stepped in front of Carlos as he tried to leave with her gun pointed at him and asked, "What do you mean introduce yourself? To us?" Carlos shook his head and said, "Not you. Although it's very nice to meet you. Him." He pointed to Lucifer, who looked at Carlos shell shocked. "Me?" Lucifer asked. "Why me?" Carlos sighed and said, "Sorry. Can't explain right now. Not everyone here knows the big secret. So I'll see you later." "You aren't going anywhere, kid," Chloe said. Carlos sighed and before Chloe could blink, Carlos slapped Chloe's gun out of her hand and ran to the door, looking back at Lucifer and saying, "See you later Lucifer Morningstar!" And with that, he shut the door on them and locked it. Chloe ran up and couldn't get the door open, but she looked out the window and saw Carlos running away. Groaning, she turned to Lucifer, who was still standing there in disbelief, and asked, "Do you know that kid?" Lucifer looked at Chloe and answered, "I have no idea, Detective. But he seems to know me. More than he should. And I honestly don't know what to make of it."
Chloe sighed and said, "Well, we are going to have to worry about him later. Right now, we have a US Marshall to question." She turned to Luke and asked, "You were Bob's handler?" Luke nodded and said, "I, uh, keep tabs on him, made sure he was safe. Failed pretty spectacularly at that, though, didn't I?" "You certainly did," Lucifer replied, still feeling agitated about the mysterious kid. "So why were you following us outside?" Chloe asked. "You could have approached us at any time." "Like that kid?" Luke asked, shocking Lucifer and Chloe. "When I was following you two, I noticed the kid at one point, but he kept disappearing on me. When I did seem to get eyes on him, he was also watching you two throughout the farmer's market. Maybe you two need to watch your backs for a while."
Lucifer and Chloe were shocked at this knowledge as Luke continued, "Sorry, but when you're dealing with someone like Bob the Knob…" Lucifer snickered, "Sorry. Seriously? Bob the Knob? What was he in witness protection for? Bad porn?" Luke revealed, "Bob was an enforcer for the Paradiso crime syndicate. His signature was beating people half to death with a bag full of doorknobs." "Paradisos have a pretty ruthless reputation," Chloe replied. "I've never dealt with them myself, but if Bob was high up in the organization…" Luke answered for her, "They're based out of New York, but have their fingers everywhere. Look, no offense to the LAPD. I just don't know who to trust. Especially after that kid jumped me, and especially since no one should've known Bob was here." "So you think the Paradisos were responsible for this?" Chloe asked. Luke sighed and said, "A group of them came to town a couple of days ago and I don't think it was for the sunshine. And before you ask, that kid isn't part of the Paradisos. I've never seen him before." Chloe nodded and asked, "Did you talk to them?" "What's the point?" Luke retorted. "They won't talk to law enforcement." "Oh," Lucifer replied. "You'd be surprised. I mean, after all, she has the Devil at her side." Chloe smirked and whispered, "Maybe it is kind of fun being in the know."
"Whatever your game is," Luke said. "I don't care. Maybe it's because of the name that kid called you. But still, watch your backs. Now, we need to get out of here." Lucifer smirked and walked up to the door and said, "Don't worry, I'll have us out in a…" But then they all heard thee lock turn and the door magically opened. Luke shook his head and walked past Lucifer as the man himself said, "Jiffy." Chloe walked up to Lucifer and asked, "Superior strength you seem to have, Lucifer." "Detective," Lucifer said. "I didn't unlock this door. Someone else did." "Then who?" Chloe asked. "I don't know." "Whatever the case," Chloe said. "Why don't you head home for the day? I have some boring paperwork to do. Just keep an eye out for that kid." "Indeed, Detective," Lucifer replied. "He was a mysterious kid. But who is he?"
Several yards away, Carlos was smirking as he watched the scene from the mirror. "They'll never figure out that I unlocked it," Carlos thought to himself. "Glad to see that I can control things from farther away. And I left better control with that marshal. Now, he is heading back to his club. Time to see the inside for myself."
Chloe had made it home after doing a lot of paperwork. She walked in through the front door and put her keys on the table. She didn't see Maze sitting in a chair near the fireplace as the demon asked, "What's up, Decker?" Chloe gasped in shock and turned to face Maze and said, "Maze. You scared me. What the hell are you doing?" Maze calmly looked at Chloe and said, "I heard you were back. And I know that you know. You know." "Right," Chloe replied. "So you just hid in the dark and waited for the creepiest moment ever to say something? First that kid from the market who knows Lucifer somehow, now you." "Old habits, I guess," Maze answered. "Wait, what kid that knows Lucifer?" "Some kid that threw a US Marshall across a room, slapped my gun out of my hand, and locked me and Lucifer in said room," Chloe replied. "But anyway, back to why you are sitting here." Maze sighed and said, "Look, I know you're probably really freaked out, so good faith gesture."
She turned her chair around to show that she handcuffed herself behind the chair so that Chloe could feel calm about talking to her. "I'm locked into these. You have nothing to worry about. Look, I need you to know, Chloe, that even though I'm a demon, I would never hurt you." "I know," Chloe replied. "Yeah?" Maze asked. "Really," Chloe assured. Maze smirked and said, "Good." She then ripped out of the handcuffs and stood up. Chloe sighed and said, "Good faith, huh?" "Well," Maze answered. "You thought you were safe. That's all that matters, right?" "Is it?" Chloe asked.
"So where's Trixie?" Maze asked. "I was hoping to see her too." "Oh, yeah," Chloe remembered. "She's at Dan's. You know, obviously, she hasn't seen him for a while, so she's gonna stay with him for a bit." "Oh yeah, sure," Maze replied. "I'll just swing by and say hi." Chloe stepped in front of Maze as the demon was trying to leave and said, "I don't think that's a good idea, Maze." Maze's face went hard and stern and muttered, "I knew it. She's still upset with me, isn't she?" Chloe sighed and said, "You know, Maze, she is, and I, I'm sorry, I just, I don't see her getting over it anytime soon." Maze looked hurt and said, "Yeah. Then I guess I'll head out. Maybe track down this kid that's got you so spooked." "Good luck," Chloe said. "He disappeared into the wind." Maze gave Chloe a hard glare and said, "I'm a bounty hunter. I'll find him."
Meanwhile, Lucifer made it back to Lux and went into the elevator to go to his penthouse. When he arrived at the top floor, he put his coat on a chair and poured himself a drink. He then heard angel wings from the balcony and shouted, "All right, go on. Get it out of your system." Lucifer turned to see Amenadiel in his original angel garb walking up to him as his angel brother asked, "What?" Lucifer answered, "Well, we both know why you're really here. To gloat." "Lucy," Amenadiel replied. "I'm here to make sure you know the truth. That we angels do, in fact, have control over ourselves, like I thought. Also to gloat." Lucifer chuckled and handed Amenadiel a drink as he said, "I figured it out when you flew up to Heaven with Charlotte. Nice touch on that, by the way. First class ticket to the Silver City. Just as she deserved." "I agree," Amenadiel said smiling.
They clinked their glasses together and drank a sip. "You know," Lucifer said. "I'm actually gong to miss you, brother." "Miss me?" Amenadiel asked. "What do you mean?" "Well," Lucifer answered. "Your wings are back. You can finally go home for good, like you wanted to all this time." Amenadiel sighed and said, "I suppose that has been my ultimate goal." "Honestly," Lucifer replied. "I'm surprised you returned at all. The Silver City not what you remember it to be?" "No," Amenadiel replied. "No, it's exactly as I remember." "I'm happy for you, brother," Lucifer said walking over to pour more whiskey for himself. "You're getting exactly what you want. And, surprisingly, I may be as well." "Ah," Amenadiel caught on. "Now, what's that?" "The Detective knows what I really am," Lucifer revealed. Amenadiel looked shocked and said, "Oh, Lucy. Are you all right? Do you need my help?" "Well, that's just it," Lucifer replied. "Apparently, it seems that she's fine with it. I know. I was skeptical myself, but I think it may really be true." "Are you sure?" Amenadiel asked. "Because if you need me to stay, I will stay for as long as it takes…" "Brother," Lucifer interrupted. "Go home. Go back to where you want to be."
Amenadiel nodded, handed back his glass to Lucifer, walked out to the balcony, and flew off. Lucifer downed his whiskey and said, "Well now. Let's see what's going on in Lux tonight." He walked over to the elevator and got in it to go down to his club.
When he got out of the elevator, one of his bouncers was right next to the elevator waiting for him. "Ah, Larry," Lucifer greeted. "Something amiss?" Larry nodded and said, "Boss, I don't know how he got in here, but we have a kid in the club." Lucifer's face developed a scowl as he asked, "What kid?"
Suddenly they heard a low musical note coming from the piano on the main floor of the club. Lucifer looked over as Larry muttered, "That kid." Lucifer saw it was the kid from the farmer's market, even though he didn't know his name was Carlos, sitting at his piano. Carlos looked up over the crowd that gathered on the main floor as saw Lucifer and grinned. He immediately started to play the first bars of the song as the club instantly knew it was an Elton John song and the club goers started to dance with the music. Lucifer scowled and asked Larry, "How did that kid get in here?" "I don't know, boss," Larry answered. "He just walked up, told us to let him in, and Bob let him in without any hesitation. It was weird." Lucifer looked over at Carlos and started to walk over to him, but the crowd was not letting him pass easily as Carlos started to sing along with his piano playing,
You could never know what's it's like
Your blood like winter freezes just like ice
And there's a cold lonely light that shines from you
You'll wind up like the wreck you hide behind that mask you use
And did you think this fool could never win?
Well look at me, I'm coming back again
I got a taste of love in a simple way
And if you need to know while I'm still standing, you just fade away
Don't you know that I'm still standing better than I ever did
Looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid
I'm still standing after all this time
Picking up the pieces of my life without you on my mind
I'm still standing, yeah yeah yeah
I'm still standing, yeah yeah yeah
Once I never could have hoped to win
You're starting down the road leaving me again
The threats you made were meant to cut me down
And if our love was just a circus, you'd be a clown by now
Don't you know that I'm still standing better than I ever did
Looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid
I'm still standing after all this time
Picking up the pieces of my life without you on my mind
I'm still standing, yeah yeah yeah
I'm still standing, yeah yeah yeah
Don't you know that I'm still standing better than I ever did
Looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid
I'm still standing after all this time
Picking up the pieces of my life without you on my mind
I'm still standing, yeah yeah yeah
I'm still standing, yeah yeah yeah
I'm still standing, yeah yeah yeah
I'm still standing, yeah yeah yeah
I'm still standing, yeah yeah yeah
I'm still standing, yeah yeah yeah
As much as Lucifer was pissed at the kid, he couldn't lie to himself about the raw talent of him. The crowd was cheering loudly and wanted an encore, but Lucifer got to the piano and shouted, "Ladies and gentlemen, please give my very young friend a break for a bit." Lucifer then grabbed onto Carlos' collar and dragged him off of the piano seat, towards the door. Carlos shouted in protest, "Hey. What's the big idea?" Lucifer dragged him to the stairs leading to the entrance as Lucifer turned and stared at Carlos finally saying, "That's the question I have for you, lad. How dare you enter my club! I don't know how you managed to get past my security, and how you did what you did earlier, but this has gone on far enough."
Carlos grabbed onto Lucifer's hand and pried it off of his shirt saying, "Honestly, getting in here was easier than you think. Your guards or whatever you call them were understanding and your security equipment seriously needs some updates. Maybe I could upgrade this place for you." "No!" Lucifer shouted. "I don't know why you are here and why you're following me, but this ends now!" Lucifer's eyes glowed red, but Carlos' face went stern and said, "Seriously? Red eyes trying to scare me?" Lucifer got confused as Carlos continued, "Look. I know who you really are. Mr. King of Hell. So I won't be surprised by your antics. Yes, I have been following you around all day. The beekeeper's crime scene, the farmer's market, etc. Not the police station, cause duh. I came here to Los Angeles to seek you out. For your help." "My help?" Lucifer asked. "What would a little child like you want with my help? You may have some trickster skills up your sleeve, but you aren't special. Get out of my club now!"
Carlos glared at Lucifer, his eyes showing a hint of red, which shocked Lucifer, as Carlos said, "You don't want to listen to what I have to say? Fine. I'll go, for now. But I promise you that the next time I seek you out, you'll hear me out. I'll be watching." Carlos then turned and walked up the stairs, pushing past club goers and leaving Lucifer there shell shocked. "Who is this kid?" Lucifer thought in his head.
Carlos walked out of Lux and towards his vespa, taking deep breaths to try and calm down before he lost control. Suddenly someone grabbed him by the neck and dragged him to an alley. Carlos looked up and saw that it was Maze who grabbed him, and she held a knife to Carlos' neck. Carlos chuckled as Maze growled, "So you're the kid that scared Decker today. You don't look tough." Carlos looked at Maze and said, "You're Lucifer's demon, aren't you? Very clever sneaking up on me like prey. Sorry, but I'm use to stuff like this. You don't scare me." Maze scoffed as she noticed the chain around Carlos' neck and pulled it out from underneath his shirt, revealing the Ring of Envy. "Cute ring," Maze remarks. "Did you steal it?" "Nope," Carlos revealed. "It's my mom's." "Ugh, mothers," Maze groans. "I hate my mother." "I hate mine," Carlos replied, shocking Maze and Carlos took advantage of her slip up and said in a low voice, "Drop the knife." Maze dropped the knife, which surprised the demon, and then Carlos quickly shoved Maze into the wall and held her up by her throat. "Apologies," Carlos said. "I personally don't like using violence, but something tells me that you respond best to it. Now, tell me why you are hunting me." Maze tried to pry free, but Carlos was stronger than she thought, and she surprised herself by answering, "Chloe Decker told me what happened earlier today and how you know who Lucifer really is, so I hunted you down to find out who you are."
"Thank you," Carlos said as he dropped her and Maze gasped for breath. Carlos knelt down and said, "I'll just tell you this. I'm here for Lucifer's help. But he is the one that is getting the explanation of why. Maybe after that, we can meet again on better terms. So please don't follow me. Have a good night." Carlos got up and walked away towards where he hid his vespa. Maze stood up and watched Carlos walk away. "Who is that kid?" Maze muttered as she massaged her neck.
The next morning, Lucifer and Chloe met up at a country club where they heard the Paradisos were vacating. They walked around the grounds as Chloe said, "Given the Paradisos' reputation, I certainly wasn't expecting this." "What's the point of extorting and murdering if you don't get what you desire?" Lucifer commented. "Even if it is, Dad help me, bocce ball." Chloe walked up to one of the members and asked, "Excuse me. Are you Frank "The Pool Boy" Paradiso?" "That's me," Frank answered. "What's it to you?" Chloe pulled out her badge and said, "Bob the Knob was murdered here in LA recently and here you are on vacation." "World's full of coincidences, ain't it?" Frank retorted. "Now, if you'll excuse me…"
He walked away and Chloe followed him, with Lucifer grabbing himself something from the bar. "When was the last time you saw Bob?" Chloe asked. Frank threw a ball in the sand pit and answered, "If I had to think, it was on the stand, testifying against my uncle. Getting himself a sweet deal in the process." "He's lying," Lucifer said in a agitated voice from behind Frank. "Although, you probably knew that, what with him being a mobster and all. But I actually have proof." He showed Chloe a jar of Bob's honey and said, "I made a little discovery whilst investigating the cheese platter. It's delicious stuff. Avocado honey, who knew?" "Pretty great, right?" Frank asked and Lucifer hummed in agreement as he licked some off of his fingers.
Frank then realized his slip up and revealed, "All right, all right. We found out Bob was living in LA. We didn't have any reason to kill him." "My files say you and Bob hated each other," Chloe replied. "We had a rivalry," Frank retorted. "He had his whole doorknobs thing and, as for me…" "You kill people in swimming pools, hence the name Pool Boy," Lucifer interrupted. "It's very clever. I see what you've done there." "Allegedly killed," Frank retorted. "But as we got older, we learned to respect each other." "OK," Chloe replied. "Say I believe that. Bob still put your uncle in jail for 50 years because he testified." "Yeah," Frank revealed. "And we owe him for that." Chloe got confused and asked, "What do you mean?" "Uncle Vin was a bastard," Frank revealed. "Bob did everyone a favor by taking him out. And as for the honey, it isn't what it looks like." "It looks like you got a delicious trophy after a kill," Lucifer said.
Frank shook his head and explained, "A couple weeks ago, we got an anonymous note that Bob was in LA. We came here to warn him. That's when we tried the honey. Almost as sweet as that Lenore of his." "Can I see the note?" Chloe asked. "Wish I could help you," Frank revealed. "I gave it to Bob." Chloe hummed and looked over at Lucifer, who was licking his fingers still.
They left the country club and walked onto a bridge with Chloe saying into her phone, "So I saw security cameras at the farmers' market. Wee can check the footage to see if Pool Boy Paradiso or anybody else visited Lenore and Bob's stand, OK? Thanks, Dan."
Chloe hung up her cell phone as Lucifer said, "Ah. That was disappointing." Chloe hummed, "We haven't hit a dead end yet." "No, no. When i heard his name was Pool Boy, I pictured a much more Baywatch-esque suspect." They both chuckled as Chloe replied, "Still. You seem agitated about something." "Indeed," Lucifer revealed. "That mystery boy from the farmers' market appeared in Lux last night. He somehow got past my security and played on my piano, enchanting the entire crowd. All my customers got disappointed when he left and were begging me to bring him back for an encore." "What did he want?" Chloe asked. "My help apparently," Lucifer answered. "He said he came here to LA for me. But he got upset when I wanted him gone and he said he'll come back later. And that he's watching." "Then we will keep our eyes out for him," Chloe said.
"Listen, Detective…" Lucifer tried to put his hand on Chloe's shoulder, but she got spooked and backed away a little. Lucifer got a worried look on his face as Chloe said, "Sorry." "What's wrong?" Lucifer asked. "Nothing's wrong," Chloe answered quickly. "Nothing. Everything's OK. I just, you startled me. Everything's OK." Chloe walked away from Lucifer, leaving him standing alone on the bridge, with the devil looking concerned.
Close by, Carlos saw everything on the mirror as he thought, "So. She's not telling the whole truth it seems. I can tell that Lucifer cares for her a great deal. Looks like he does have a heart after all. That's good to know. I just wish he would calm down a little so he could hear me out. I don't want this trip to be for nothing. How much do I have to show him to get him to listen?" Sighing he put the mirror back into his jacket and drove away on his vespa.
Back at LAPD headquarters, Chloe was meeting with Luke about her interview with Frank. "You believe Pool Boy?" Luke asked. "His story tracks," Chloe answered. "He has an alibi for the night of the murder that completely checks out." "Alibis can be bought or threatened," Luke revealed. "These guys are monsters, Detective Decker." "And I'm not taking my eye off any of them," Chloe revealed. "But I believe him when he says that he got an anonymous tip. If the note exists, whoever wrote it wanted Bob dead. That's who we need to find. Did Lenore know about Bob's past?" "I don't know," Luke answered. "I never met her. Bob certainly wasn't supposed to tell her, but then again he wasn't supposed to attack a honey bee farmer with a bad full of doorknobs, so, look, we do our best at WITSEC, but these guys, they can't help themselves." Chloe looked over some documents and said, "Lenore didn't seem to know when I interviewed her, but Pool Boy, he acted as if they had already met." "So she knew the truth," Luke realized. "Then maybe she saw the note," Chloe replied.
Lucifer meanwhile walked over to Dan's desk and said, "Daniel, there you are. I need some advice in an area I assume you have extensive expertise. What does it mean when a woman recoils at your touch?" Dan chuckled and said, "Nope. I am not playing that game anymore." "Excuse me?" Lucifer asked. Dan sighed and said, "You say something insulting, stupid, but kind of funny, and i just shrug it off. It was our schtick. But we are not friends. Not anymore. But I'll tell you what, I'll give you an answer. It means that they hate you. That they want you as far away from them as possible, because your very touch makes them recoil in disgust." Lucifer stood there stunned as Dan chuckled, "What? No funny quip to that?"
Lucifer looked behind Dan and saw Chloe walking toward them. Dan turned and saw Chloe, who said, "Hey. Where's Lucifer?" Dan turned and saw that Lucifer disappeared. Dan sighed and said, "I don't know and I don't care." "Well," Chloe said. "He was supposed to come with me to interview Lenore." "Well," Dan said. "I guess it's just you and me."
Chloe nodded, then asked, "Did you by chance find that kid Lucifer and I ran into at the farmers' market in any of the footage you watched while looking for Pool Boy?" "Some," Dan answered. "It did seem like he was tailing you two. But funny enough, he didn't look like he had any evil intent. He looked hopeful. When he locked the storage shed and ran off, he stopped a few yards away and stayed there until you two got out. Made some weird twisting motion with his hand, then left. Cameras couldn't catch where he went. He did drive off on a vespa though. No license plate." Chloe hummed and said, "OK. We'll deal with that later. Right now, let's go interview Lenore."
Lucifer went back to Linda's office and sat down for another session. "The Detective is in deeper denial than I thought," Lucifer started. Linda sighed and said, "All right, I'm going to give you advice on how to help her." "Finally," Lucifer replied. "Thank you, Doctor." "But," Linda interrupted. "I'm going to need a good metaphor. Let's use you as an example." "Oh," Lucifer smirked. "Role play. It's been a while, Doctor. We don't have the clown masks with us, but I'm still game." "OK," Linda replied. "Well, if you were ini denial, and if that denial forced you to face a truth that scarred you more than you'd like to admit, I'd say that you were projecting your issues onto whatever you were dealing with in that moment. Or whomever you were dealing with." Lucifer sighed and said, "I see what you're saying, Doctor. Thank you."
He stood up to leave as Linda asked, "Do you?" Lucifer paused and answered, "Well, the Detective is clearly projecting her issues onto the case. So to understand her, I need to use the case to help her understand her feelings." "And in so doing," Linda interrupted. "Understand your own feelings as well?" Lucifer scoffed and said, "Well, I'm going to try. And I'm going to keep my eyes out for that punk kid." Linda tilted her head and asked, "What kid?" Lucifer sighed and said, "This kid who has been following me, managed to get into my club, took over my piano, and asked for my help before I shouted at him to get out." "Interesting," Linda commented. "Did he say why he was seeking you out?" "Didn't give him the time of day," Lucifer revealed. Linda hummed to herself and said, "Aren't you curious as to why?" Lucifer paused and said, "Maybe. He did show off skills that no human should have. And he went through a lot of trouble to get to me." "Then," Linda suggested. "Maybe you should see what he wants. Maybe it will help you solve the mystery." Lucifer hummed and left Linda's office.
Chloe and Dan arrived outside of Lenore's home and got out of the car when Chloe said, "Hey, Dan, I've been meaning to say, you know, I'm sorry that I wasn't here for you when you were dealing with, well, everything." Dan sighed and said, "I don't know how much of a difference it'd have made. I just threw myself into work, you know." "No," Chloe replied. "But still, now I'm here to pick up the slack, so if you want to, take some time off to mourn." "The job is kind of like my therapy," Dan revealed. "It's exactly where I need to be right now." "OK," Chloe said. "But you know, I'm here to talk." "Look, I know," Dan interrupted. "And thank you. There is something, though. What's Trixie's obsession with gelato?" Chloe chuckled, "Oh my God. It was hard getting her to leave Rome after she discovered that stuff."
She looked up to see that Lenore's front door was open. Dan saw this as well and both detectives pulled out their guns and snuck into the house. They saw things misplaced here and there, and no sign of Lenore. Dan pulled out his phone and called for backup.
The backup arrived 15 minutes later and went through the whole house. Dan came back from interviewing a neighbor and said, "OK, so the neighbor saw Lenore leave carrying a gym bag, alone and in a hurry. She took her own car." "So what?" Chloe asked. "She was involved in her husband's murder and then ran?" "She could have written the anonymous note," Dan suggested. "When it didn't work, maybe she killed him herself or found someone else to do it."
Lucifer suddenly appeared behind Chloe and Dan and suggested, "Or she found the truth about the man she loved and it drove her away. What do you think she would have felt in that moment? Horror? Disgust? Mild arousal?" Chloe turned to Lucifer and said, "I don't think that's really helping right now, Lucifer." Lucifer continued, "Understanding her perspective will help us understand her actions, Detective." Chloe realized, "You know what? That's a good point. I'm sure she felt betrayed, confused, scared even." "Is that why you think she ran?" Lucifer asked. "Because she was afraid of him?" Chloe sighed and said, "Lenore may have lied about what she knew about Bob, but she was genuinely tried-stricken at the crime scene. So I think we're missing something. Ella, what did she leave with?" Ella walked up and answered, "Clothes, toiletries. Your standard get the hell out of town go bag. Oh, and her wedding album." Chloe looked at Ella and said, "You don't take a wedding album if you've murdered your husband. Dan, what did you see on the farmers' market footage?" Dan looked at Chloe and answered, "Just one visit from Pool Boy Paradiso, like he claimed. Oh, and Marshall Reynolds. A couple of times, actually." "And was it only Bob that Reynolds was talking to?" "Well," Dan answered, "He spoke to Lenore once. Why?" "Well," Chloe revealed. "He said that they had never met."
While Lucifer and the police were figuring all of that out, Maze was sitting in Linda's office wanting to talk with her, "I don't…I'm fine. Whatever. It doesn't matter." Linda was pacing back and forth and said, "Maze, you and I both know that's not true. First, you seem shaken up by that kid getting the upper hand on you. Like Lucifer said, he's got hidden talents. With the other thing, Trixie means a lot to you. And she's the last person you need to make up with since your backslide into demon-dom. And targeting that kid probably didn't help matters." Maze sighed looking at Linda's pacing and said, "OK, Linda, what is going on with you? Do you need to pee or something?" "No," Linda answered. "I sit all day. It's nice to be able to move around when I get a chance. So let's talk about what you're dealing with emotionally." "Yeah," Maze said sitting up. "I really don't want to." "Maybe it will help if I spoke your language," Linda offered. "You speak Lilim?" Maze asked. She then said some words in Lilim, making Linda shout, "What?" Maze chuckled and said, "No, guess not." "No," Linda replied. "I'm talking about violence. Come on, stand up." Maze chuckled as she stood up and said, "OK. One, I like to fight when I'm happy or horny. And, two, I really don't want to accidentally kill my best friend. Plus, my neck still hurts a little from last night." "No," Linda said. "Well, I think you underestimate me, Maze. Uh, I've been doing some kickboxing. I've got moves. I will avoid your neck."
Maze sighed, walked up to Linda, and said, "I'll let you take a free…." But then Linda punched Maze right in the face, right when Amenadiel walked in shouting, "Hey!" Maze held her check and said gleefully, "Linda!" "Stop it, you two," Amenadiel said. "It's good I'm here. I can't allow you guys to fight over me any longer." Maze and Linda chuckled at Amenadiel's lack of realization. Amenadiel finally understood and said, "Ah, you're not fighting over me, are you?" "No," Linda answered. "But it's sweet of you to think so. We made up a month or so ago." "So do you need my help?" Amenadiel asked. "With this or anything else?" "No," Linda said. "We're good."
Amenadiel looked sad as Linda asked, "Are you OK?" The angel sat down on the couch and said, "I went back home to the Silver City." "That's amazing," Linda remarked. "It should be," Amenadiel replied. "It's exactly as I remembered it, but why did it feel so different? Why didn't it feel like…" "Like home?" Linda suggested. Maze sat down next to him and said, "Because this is your home." Amenadiel realized that Maze had a point. The demon smirked and said, "Now, I think I'll take this happy mood I'm in and track down that kid who got the better of me last night." Amenadiel looked at Maze and asked, "What kid?"
Over at LAPD, Chloe and Ella were trying to track down Luke Reynolds while Lucifer was eating more of the avocado honey. Chloe tried to call Luke, but said, "I'm just getting Reynolds' voicemail. Any luck tracing his phone?" Ella looked up from the computer and answered, "I'm triangulating it now. Not sure how long it'll take, though." "Or whether or not he had anything to do with this." Dan walked into the lab and said, "I think he did. I made a couple of discreet calls to the Marshals' office. Two of the ex-cons under Reynolds' protection have died in the last couple years." "Who killed them?" Chloe asked. "That's just it," Dan revealed. "One was an angry girlfriend. The other was a hit and run that looked like it was mob related." Lucifer put the honey down and said, "So our dear Marshal weaponized the very secrets only he knew. He let certain enemies know where the criminals were hiding." "Or," Chloe suggested. "Told the new wives the truth, knowing how betrayed they'd feel." "And voila!" Lucifer finished. "The dirty work was done for him. That is remarkably efficient." "But," Chloe realized. "In Bob's case, nobody took the bait. So maybe Reynolds got frustrated and decided to get his own hands dirty. The question is, why?" "I'll keep digging," Dan said. "See if I can find more."
Dan left the lab and Lucifer asked, "So, why did Lenore run?" "Well," Chloe suggested. "If Reynolds met with her previously, then probably she trusts him. So maybe he reached out to here to tell her she was in danger." "Oh," Lucifer replied. "And little did she know how true that was."
"Whoa," Ella said next to Chloe. "My computer is acting weird." Chloe looked over and asked, "Weird how?" "I don't know," Ella revealed. "It's like a super program opened up and is spending up the process of tracking Reynolds down. But I don't recognize this program." Lucifer tilted his head in confusion, then the computer binged and Ella shouted, "It got a hit on Reynolds' GPS. Here are the coordinates." Chloe got them off of Ella and she and Lucifer ran out of the lab. Ella looked back down at her computer to see that the super program disappeared and the old program was back. "Weird," Ella muttered.
Nearby, Carlos was watching on the mirror and whispered, "Glad that worked. I didn't think I could communicate with that computer from so far away. I got lucky. But it didn't last long. Luckily, it lasted just enough to help. Need to get better control. Now, I need to make sure that they are safe going after that guy." Carlos revved up his vespa and drove off, not seeing Maze watching from nearby.
Over at a community center pool, Luke was tying Lenore up in a chair next to the pool. Lenore whimpered, "Why? Why are you doing this? Please. Please tell me. Don't kill me." Luke pulled a gun out at her and said, "I'm sorry. But there's no other way."
"Sure there is!" Lucifer shouted from the doorway with Chloe behind him with her gun out. "There's loads of ways to kill her. Literally tons. But you chose to use Frank "Pool Boy" Paradiso's MO to frame him and tie up loose ends. It's very clever." Chloe pointed her gun to Luke and said in a stern voice, "Drop the gun, Reynolds. Step away." "You don't understand," Luke pleaded. "I'm not the bad guy here. I've watched all these criminals for years, living happy lives, being rewarded for the terrible things that they did." "Lenore's done nothing wrong," Chloe said. "Let her go." "Oh, hasn't she?" Luke retorted. "She forgave him. Even when he was exactly the same monster he'd always been. You saw what he did to the guy at the farmers' market. They never change." Lucifer started to walk closer to Luke and said, "So maybe he slipped up. We all do sometimes. But at least he was trying to make a better life for himself. And you stole it."
Luke then pointed the gun at Lucifer and shouted, "You step back." Lucifer kept walking while Chloe shouted, "Lucifer, don't!" But Lucifer smiled evilly and said, "It's not your job to punish, Marshal Reynolds. It's mine." His eyes glowed red and put his hand on the barrel of the gun. Luke pulled the trigger and shot Lucifer's hand. Luke then pushed Lenore into the pool and ran away. "Don't let him get away," Chloe told Lucifer and Lucifer walked after Luke while Chloe jumped into the pool to rescue Lenore.
Luke rain outside and got into his SUV and started the engine. Lucifer appeared behind the car and pushed through the back windshield. "Jesus!" Luke shouted. "Not quite," Lucifer snarled. When Luke went to put his foot on the gas pedal, Lucifer held onto the car with his hurt hand and used his strength to hold the car back. Luke was shocked that Lucifer was holding the car down. He pulled his gun out and shot at Lucifer, hitting his hurt hand and Lucifer let go, and Luke started to speed off.
But as Luke turned to see where he was driving, a voice called out, "Stop!" Suddenly the car turned off automatically and stopped moving. Luke got confused and looked up to see Carlos standing a few feet from the car, him being the one who commanded the car to turn off. Lucifer saw this and started to walk over, his hand healing bit by bit as Chloe was far enough away. Luke opened the car and grabbed his gun and started to run when Carlos shouted, "Freeze!" Luke instantly froze, shocking both himself and Lucifer. The US Marshal pointed his gun at Carlos, but the boy chuckled and held up his hand and the gun flew out of Luke's hand and into Carlos'. "I don't like guns," Carlos commented as he bent the gun in his hand then threw it away on the ground. He walked over to Luke, who couldn't move his legs, and grabbed him by the throat and hoisted him up in the air. "Please!" Luke shuttered. "Let me go!" "Why should I?" Carlos said in a menacing voice. "You nearly killed that innocent woman. You already killed her husband. Someone like you shouldn't go free. You're going to pay for what you did." Carlos' eyes glowed red, as Lucifer watched in shock. Carlos then threw Luke towards the car, the marshal hitting the side door and falling down to the ground unconscious. Carlos looked over at Lucifer and asked, "Ready to listen to me now, Lucifer?"
Suddenly something whacked Carlos on the back of the head and Carlos slumped to the ground. Lucifer saw Maze next to the kid and shouted, "Mazikeen!" Maze smiled and said, "What? It was payback for getting the upper hand on me last night. What should I do with him?" Chloe then walked out, seeing the scene, and ran over to check on Luke. "He's still breathing," Chloe commented. "Lucifer, did you do this?" "No, Detective," Lucifer answered. He looked down at Carlos and continued, "It was him. And I don't know how."
Luke was taken into custody and Carlos was brought in by Maze to LAPD. Chloe and Lucifer were standing behind the two way mirror watching Carlos wake up handcuffed to the table in the interrogation room and looking around the room. "So," Chloe asked. "Do you want in on the interview?" "Absolutely," Lucifer said, cradling his hurt hand.
They walked in as Carlos saw this and said, "Man. That demon got me good. Wasn't expecting her to do that." Chloe sat down and said, "OK. We can do this the easy way or the hard way. Tell us who you are." Carlos chuckled and looked up at the security camera for a second and it sparked. "Sorry," Carlos said. "Had to cut off your little friend up there first before I said anything else." "How did you do that?" Chloe asked. Carlos shrugged and said, "I was always good with tech. I guess I'm better than I thought." Lucifer glared at Carlos and asked, "Are you going to tell us who you are? And why you have been trying to get into contact with me?"
Carlos sighed and said, "Fine. Fair is fair, I guess. My name is Carlos." "Do you have a last name to go with that?" Chloe asked. "Yeah," Carlos replied. "But I'm not telling you that." "Are you here by yourself?" Chloe asked. "Do you have parents that we could contact?" Carlos gave a hard glare at Chloe and answered, "My mom doesn't care about me. Never has, never will." "What about your dad?" Lucifer asked. Carlos glared at Lucifer and said, "He doesn't know that I exist." Chloe sighed and said, "Well, you are going to have to give us your last name or the name of your mother so that we can track down your file to figure out who you are and where you came from." Carlos chuckled and said, "Good luck with that. I guarantee that I am not going to be in any files in any system here. So, Ms. Chloe, you can go and see if I'm right. I want to talk to Lucifer alone if you don't mind." Chloe looked over at Lucifer, who nodded, then Chloe got up and left the interrogation room.
Lucifer turned to look at Carlos and said, "Alright, Carlos, I am here, ready to listen. Now why did you seek me out for my help? What is it you really desire?" Lucifer stared into Carlos' eyes so that Carlos would give in and reveal his deepest darkest desire. Carlos looked like he was going to give in and said, "I want….you to know that your desire mojo doesn't work on me. Sorry." Lucifer recoiled in shock and asked, "How is that possible? I thought only the Detective was immune." Carlos shrugged and said, "I guess I am part of that club too. But maybe instead of trying to rip it out of me, you could ask nicely."
Lucifer rolled his eyes and said, "Fine. Why do you want my help? Since you know who I really am, you should also know that helping people really isn't my style." "But you do help the LAPD," Carlos remarked. "And I noticed that you showed concern earlier today for Chloe. You may hid it under that hard shell of yours, but you have a heart of gold. You aren't evil like other people might think when they hear that you are the Devil, but in reality you're misunderstood." Lucifer stared at Carlos amazed that the kid could read him like an open book and was kind of touched that Carlos held no ill will towards him.
Carlos sighed and said, "I want your help with me. Specifically my powers." Lucifer tilted his head and asked, "Why? You seemed powerful enough that you don't need help." "You're wrong," Carlos said. "I was lucky that I had control over myself enough to not go berserk. I almost lost control tonight with that marshal and your demon knocking me out was actually a blessing in disguise. I've only had these abilities for almost a year and I was told that if I want to figure out who I am and what I am suppose to be, then I should find you." "And who told you about me?" Lucifer asked.
Carlos shuffled in his seat a bit and said, "It's complicated. Look, I want to tell you everything, but I need to know that I have your trust. And I have a feeling that you want mine as well, since you don't know me at all. I want us to get to know each other bit by bit while you help me control what is going on with me and when you have earned my trust, then I will tell you everything you want to know." Lucifer stared at Carlos and asked, "So what? You want to be my ward or something like that?" Carlos smiled a genuine smile and said, "Something like that."
Lucifer sighed and said, "OK. But if I am going to take time out of my life to help you, it won't come for free. You will do some things for me in return. I can hire you into my club. Not in the way that you think. I may be the Devil, but I understand labor laws and I can't legally hire you into a night club since I know you are not 21. How old are you anyway?" "I guess I'll give you a freebie for today and tell you that I'm 16," Carlos answered. "OK then," Lucifer said. "Your musical talents really wowed my club goers so I'll hire you for musical entertainment. But you will be watched at all times. And perhaps I will take you up on your offer to heighten my security. You seem smart with technology so you can work on that. I will let you stay on the floor below my penthouse as that is a fully furnished guest floor." Carlos smirked and said, "I will agree to all of that. Now, do we have a deal?" Carlos held out his hand as far as the handcuffs let him. Lucifer nodded, put his hand in Carlos' and said, "We have a deal."
"Good," Carlos said as he broke out of the handcuffs and stood up. Lucifer chuckled and said, "I should have known that you could get out of those any time you wanted." "Where's the fun in that?" Carlos asked. Lucifer chuckled and said, "You know what, kid? You're alright."
Outside of the interrogation room, Maze was waiting for Lucifer to finish. She saw Chloe walk out earlier and go right to her desk. She looked over and saw Trixie sitting at Dan's desk, listening to music while reading a book. Maze felt guilty and started to walk away when she heard, "Maze." Maze turned around and saw Trixie standing there looking at her. "Trix," Maze said. "Hey, I'm..I've been wanting to talk to you. To tell you that I'm sorry." She kneeled down to Trixie's level and continued, "I'm so sorry for…" But then Trixie ran into Maze's arms and hugged the demon. "I know, dummy," Trixie said. "You're not made at me?" Maze asked. "Nah," Trixie revealed. "I couldn't stay mad at you." Maze pulled back and said, "But your mom, she…" But she saw that Trixie was confused and said, "No, never mind."
Maze looked over and saw Lucifer walking out with the kid and let go of Trixie to stand up. "Ah, Mazikeen." Lucifer said walking over to the demon. "Lucifer!" Trixie shouted running over and hugging Lucifer. Carlos chuckled at Lucifer's mortified face. Trixie pulled back and asked, "Who's this?" Before Lucifer could answer, Carlos stepped up and answered, "Hi. I'm Carlos." He held out his hand to Trixie, but the girl instead gave him a hug and said, "I'm Trixie. I'm a hugger. Nice to meet you." Carlos smiled and returned the hug. Trixie pulled back and asked, "So, how do you know Lucifer?" "Well, child," Lucifer answered. "Carlos is my new ward." "Ward?" Maze asked. "But why?" "I will explain later, Mazikeen," Lucifer said. "Cool," Trixie said. "Maybe I'll see you around some more, Carlos." "Maybe you will," Carlos replied. Trixie smiled and walked back to her father's desk saying, "Bye, Lucifer. Bye, Maze. Bye, Carlos. It was nice to meet you." Carlos waved as Lucifer stood in amazement, noticing that Carlos' first interaction with the Detective's spawn went almost the same as his. He looked over and saw Chloe looking at him with a concerned look in her eye, but Lucifer guided Maze and Carlos out before Chloe could say anything.
Dan was looking over some documents when he heard, "Hello, Dan." Dan gasped, looked behind him and saw Amenadiel standing there. "Whoa," Dan replied. "Dude. Whoa, I'm sorry man, I must have been in my own head. I thought I was alone. Where the hell have you been?" "I went home for a bit," Amenadiel revealed. "And no phones there?" Dan asked. "Actually, no," Amenadiel answered. "Dan, you're the most human person that I know." "Thanks?" Dan didn't know what to make of that statement. "What made you choose to live here?" Amenadiel asked. "In Los Angeles?" "Uh," Dan thought for a moment. "The food is great. I love the ocean. And I guess I met people. People I care about." Amenadiel nodded and replied, "I think somehow it's become my home now, too. And it's time that I stop trying to make excuses for wanting to stay and choose to stay."
Dan nodded and turned back to his work and said, "That's great to hear, man." Amenadiel noticed Dan's sorrow in his voice and said, "She's in Heaven, Dan." Dan got upset, turned back to Amenadiel, and said, "Don't. I hate it when people say that." "Look at me," Amenadiel commanded. Dan did and Amenadiel put his hand on Dan and said, "She is. Trust me." He sent some of his angelic grace to Dan to show him that he was right. Dan then hugged Amenadiel and said, "Somehow I believe you."
Lucifer was sitting at his piano down in his club after showing Carlos the guest level and letting the boy get settled. Maze was amused at the deal the two made and agreed to help Lucifer help train the boy to help control his powers. Lucifer tried to play the piano, but his hand wasn't fully healed and struggled. He heard footsteps and said, "If you've come for more money, Mr. Said Out Bitch, now is not a good time. Or if it's you Carlos, I thought we were going to meet again in the morning." Lucifer looked up and saw Chloe standing there. "Hey," Chloe said. She walked over and sat down next to Lucifer as she continued, "I used to listen to the song you were playing on repeat through high school a lot when i felt lost. Lucifer, about what I saw…"
Lucifer interrupted, "I've had literal eons to come to terms with what you saw. My monstrous side. But it's not all that I am. At least I hope not. Either way, it's unfair of me to expect you to just accept it. I'm honestly not sure when I'll be able to. If ever." Chloe sighed and said, "Lucifer, what I was going to say was, what I saw was my partner." She took Lucifer's injured hand into hers as Lucifer asked, "Really?" "Really," Chloe answered. "Well, then," Lucifer replied. "Problem solved, Detective. Because if you can accept me, then that really is all that matters."
"Right," Chloe said. "And it also seems that you are now the guardian of a certain kid." Lucifer chuckled and said, "I guess I am. He wants my help to figure out who he is and control what he can do and I am going to help him. Because like I said, I am more than my monstrous side." Chloe hummed and said, "I did look into him. He was right. No record of him. Where did he come from?" "He wouldn't say," Lucifer answered. "But in time, he'll tell me. Once I earn his trust, and he earns mine. Like you did with me." Chloe smiled as they played the piano together.
Later that night, Chloe was in a church downtown. She walked in and sat in one of the pews and put his head down, silently weeping. A priest by the name of Kinley sat next to her and took her hand saying, "We knew this part would be difficult, Chloe. But just remember, what you're doing is the best thing for everyone on Earth. Including Lucifer." Chloe sighed and said, "I know." "Are you ready for the next step?" Kinley asked. Chloe looked at Kinley and answered, "I am. Especially to help the kid." "What kid?" Kinley asked.
Up in the guest level of Lux, Carlos was looking at himself in the mirror of the bathroom. He reached under his shirt and ripped off the chain that held the Ring of Envy. The illusion covering his white hair vanished and Carlos took some deep breaths. He closed his eyes and said to himself, "Step one is done. Now onto the next step. Time for this VK to learn who I am meant to be. No matter how much my friends and loved ones miss me, I must do this. Nothing will get in my way. Losing is not an option." Carlos' eyes opened to see that they were glowing red as he whispered, "Because I'm rotten to the core."
