Chapter 45: The Interrogation.
It had been a day since Naruto's fight in the forest. In the bright interrogation room, Morrigan was at work with her next prisoner. Her hands folded onto the table while she slowly blinked, an amused smile on her face. And sitting across from her was Bonnie. Her hands and feet were bound down by enchanted magical straps that glowed a dark purple. She stared at Morrigan, calm and composed while leaning back against the chair.
Naruto, Jon, Baraba, Felicia, and her crew were behind the one-sided glass in the room next door, both Werewolves in their human forms.
The Human Prince turned left to Jon, crossing his arms. "Jon, you said you'd answer as soon as we had her in imprisonment. But it's been a day."
"Sorry about that, Naruto," sincerely apologized Jon as he scratched the back of his head. "She already told you her name, Bonnie. But her full name is Baby Bonnie Hood. She's a Darkhunter, a powerful one you were lucky to survive."
"She's actually a Special S-Class Darkhunter," Felicia added. "Her gaze alone is able to strike fear in the hearts of many lower-ranking Darkstalkers."
On Jon's other side, Baraba put his hand on the glass. He squinted in concern as he added his two ryō, "I've read up on her. She was one of the people that fought Jedah in the Majigen alongside you, Jon."
"While also being an agent of the Hunter's Guild of the Northern European Alpine Branch," Grace gruffly added as she clenched her fists, glaring at the Darkhunter. "Members of the organization obtain all sorts of weapons and ammunition through illegal means, intense training in Martial Arts, weapon handling, and gunpowder crafting."
"After the Majigen, she tried to kill a Werewolf family in the outskirts of the kingdom, but she was warded off by Morrigan and the Royal Guard," Felicia continued as her gaze locked onto the red-clad blonde.
Jon's face contorted into a snarl as he faced his feline friend. In human form or not, the Werewolf was intimidating when one got on his bad side. After all that had happened with his godson, this seemed to set him on edge. "How is it possible that she's even here? She's a human; there's no way she should be alive by this point."
"Jon, we don't know," replied the Catwoman as she raised her hands to try and calm down the Lycanthrope. "Jedah said she had the heart of an S-class Darkstalker. It's likely she became one without having to succumb to the dark aura of our powers. She just disappeared after that incident."
"For all we know, she could have been among us waiting to make her next move," Baraba said as he watched the Queen of Makai sit up straight. "Now listen in, the interrogation's beginning."
Inside the room, both the Succubus and the Darkhunter were locked into an intense stare-down.
"So... Bonnie..." Morrigan amusingly drawled as she flexed the wings on her head and leaned in. "How long were you living among us?"
"Tch," the blonde girl scoffed as she gave a malicious grin. "Long enough, bat-girl."
"Yes, and long enough for you to hide in the populace of my kingdom."
"You just got it all figured out, don't you, Aensland?" Bonnie cocked her head to the side. She struggled against the magical chains as she leaned forward. "I wonder, just what are you going to do to me? Tear me apart? Eat my soul? Leave me in the interrogation chambers to be tortured? If you honestly think that's enough to break me, then you must be scraping the bottom of the barrel."
"Aww, you really think the worst of me, don't you." Morrigan leaned back against the chair. She rolled her head and cracked her neck before facing her target. "In all honesty, I'm just marveling at the fact that you think you managed to stay under the radar for so long without me knowing."
Silence took the room and those observing the interrogation. The only thing that could be heard was the air conditioning humming the background. It seemed the Queen of Makai had been keeping tabs on the Darkhunter, and she kept this information to herself.
The Darkhunter squinted her eyes, humming in amusement. "How long have you known?"
"Not long after you woke up. It was just amusing to see you hide in the public eye and try to keep a low profile." The Succubus rolled her fingers, checking them for dirt. "I have to say, you would have gotten away for it if it wasn't for a few things."
"And what's that?"
"Simple, I have eyes almost everywhere. After your little nap, I had to ensure that you wouldn't be harming anyone anytime soon. And the moment you killed all those cultists, I knew that you had a hand in it; no one but Jedah's forces uses firearms since we Darkstalkers are trained to dodge bullets with ease."
Behind the glass, almost everyone was lost in thought as the new information played in their minds. It was a surprise to a few of them; Morrigan had her secrets as both an individual and a ruler. And just to manage it from a position of strength only solidified her stance.
"So..." Jon clenched his fists, not even surprised by this new information. "She knew Bonnie was living in the kingdom all along."
Naruto nodded as he hummed in acknowledgment. "Now, that I remember, Morrigan told me a vague phrase that described her perfectly." He squinted, skeptical of the situation. "And now that I think of it, it does feel like she suspected Bonnie would show up sooner or later."
"Don't you remember, dear? That nice Darkstalker couple that took you to their home thinking you were an innocent little girl lost in the woods of my kingdom?" Morrigan knowingly asked, rolling her fingers around once more before her gaze shifted back towards the girl. "And you just went along with it. Please tell me you haven't gotten soft."
Bonnie kept her composure, her gaze becoming darker as she looked down, her hood casting a shadow over her face. She knows more than she lets on. A few steps ahead, aren't you, Aensland?
"Yeah..." quietly muttered Bonnie as she looked up to meet the Succubus's gaze. "Should've expected as much."
"Pretty much, lass," Morrigan confidently replied with a confident smirk as she leaned in. "You running into those cultists and killing them all was just a coincidence and stroke of luck on our side. And it only served me more now than ever now that you left one alive. Not only that, we could say you let yourself be captured."
"Spare me. If you know more than you let on, then why even keep this up?"
"Simple, I need you for something."
Everyone from the other room was hypnotized at the scene before them. The Succubus needed the Darkhunter, but for what? She was already a threat when it came to inhabitants of her kingdom; what use could Bonnie serve to be in their cause?
"And what would that be, bat-girl?" retorted Bonnie as she looked up to meet her gaze, an unamused grimace on her face. "You think you can control me, but you can't. I trained to fight your kind for years to come. And as soon as I get out of these, I'm going for you and everyone else's heads."
"That's an obvious lie. If you wanted our heads so badly, you would have killed the boy."
"That Naruto kid?"
Morrigan perked up as she put the dots together while keeping an amused smirk. "That's right. Why would you just toy around with him when you could kill him with ease?"
"Aww." The Darkhunter sneered like a schoolyard bully. "Funny how you talk to me about getting soft, bat-girl. Is he your son or something?"
For a moment, a murderous glint flashed in the Succubus's eyes. However, she kept her composure. "No. But the lad does seem to emit a familiar aura I can identify with." Morrigan took a deep breath in through her nose as she clapped her hands together. "Now, let's talk about how you can help us."
"As if," Bonnie retorted with a sneer. "I'm in this for my bounties."
"You must not be informed about how long it's been. It's been over ten thousand years since the old world's passing. The world you once knew is gone; there's nothing left for you."
Bonnie's eyes widened for a moment before she put her head down. Even though she was hiding her face, one could tell that a part of her world had been shattered. Years of her career of being a Darkhunter were over, and she had no real place to call home.
Naruto, at the moment, could sense a glimmer of sorrow emanating from the Darkhunter as the Queen of Makai continued to explain to the red-clad blonde just what had happened in the past ten thousand years. He could feel small flashes of mourning, loss, and deep amounts of pain. But it was all being suppressed by her will to go on. The fires of rage burned within her, refined like a sharp blade.
...It's like she's a natural kunoichi, the Human Prince coldly mused as he looked at the Darkhunter. I have a bad feeling about this...
"She knows what she's doing. The girl played with you as if you were her toy and only got captured for a reason. She's in this for something, and it's certainly not working with us if it involves her own personal interests," Kurama grimly echoed from his baby cousin's mind.
The Queen of Makai was going on explaining to the red-clad blonde just what had happened in the past ten thousand years. And it wasn't pretty.
"And that's how it happened," Morrigan firmly finished as she sat up straight, her gaze fixed on the Darkhunter. "I'm sorry if there was something or someone you loved that was there, but here we are. The world you once knew is gone, Bonnie. But I have something that could serve the both of us."
Bonnie picked her head up and glared at the Queen and spoke, "And what would that be, harlot?"
"Simple. I wish to engage your..." the Succubus drawled out a bit before tilting her head back, "...unique services as a Darkhunter."
"And if I refuse?"
"You're far too dangerous as it is. I can't exactly let you roam about my realm."
The hood sneered as she leaned back against her chair, complying with the straps. "And what will happen if I accept?"
"You'll be handsomely compensated for your services and given amnesty for your past crimes here in Makai."
Behind the glass in the dark room, everyone was shouting about and talking amongst each other in astonishment.
"What?!" Jon furiously snarled out as his eyes turned into wolfish slits. His claws sharpened and screeched against the glass. "She'll turn on us the second she gets the chance!"
Grace separated herself from the window and began pacing behind everyone, muttering to herself. "That psycho is gonna be working with us?"
"No..." Naruto gasped in fear as his eyes turned red and his breathing became harsh. He swiftly turned away from the glass, clenching his fists. "She almost killed me... and she was just playing with me... as if I was some toy!"
Lucy walked over to the Jinchūriki. She brought her right arm up and slapped his back as she spoke firmly, "Easy there, Romanoff. We don't need you having a meltdown now."
The boy had to bite his lip and cross his arms as he tried to calm his instincts before he lost himself. Keep it together, I can't lose my mind right now.
"You're letting your instincts take hold of you, brat. Keep them in check, or else you'll be overrun," berated Kurama.
I know that. I don't need you reminding me of the obvious, the boy retorted as he glared at the wall, trying to take control of his breathing.
"Just as much as I don't need to see you lose it at any given second. You are a Rabbit Prince, are you not? Then where is your pride as a Prince?"
Back at home with the other Lapine while I focus on my career as a ninja.
"If you're all done freaking out," Baraba swiftly interjected as he turned to face everyone, "then we should focus on the interrogation at hand. Our Queen is not going to forsake us; she knows what she is doing."
Felicia, who was unfazed by it all, placed her white-furred hand on the glass. "Baraba's right. Morrigan's knows what she's doing. She's not crazy enough to gamble with someone like B.B Hood."
Naruto turned to the Catwoman. "B.B Hood?"
"Yeah, it's her nickname. Baby is just a moniker for her innocent demeanor."
"Quiet, both of you," Jon berated as her turned back to the scene before them, his rage subsiding. "Let's just see how this plays out. If Bonnie gets so far out of line, I'll kill her and make sure she won't get in the way of our mission."
With that said, everyone turned back to listen to the interrogation. However, the air was heavy and thick. Each moment only made it more and more tense. Almost everyone was losing their composure over a girl that couldn't even do anything to harm them.
Bonnie sucked in through her teeth as she rolled her eyes at the Succubus. "And I should trust you? How do I know you'll uphold your end of the bargain, Aensland? And what if I just say no?"
Morrigan closed her eyes and chuckled. "Then you won't get paid or have your freedom again. If you want to spend all your time locked up in one of my finest cells, be my guest."
The offer alone was enough to make anyone revel in the benefits. However, Bonnie wasn't just anyone. It'd be foolish to believe that she would just accept right off the bat. It was just common sense to never trust a demon no matter how sweet they seemed or how kind the offer.
"What's the catch?" Bonnie skeptically replied as she narrowed her eyes at the Succubus, trying to find any signs of deception. "There's no way you're just giving all of this to me for free if I help you, so what's the catch?"
"Very smart," praised Morrigan as she held her head high. "The catch is that you work for your freedom, lass. You'll be forced to wear magic bracelets that keep watch of everything you do, following specific rules of the enchantments. You'll be partnered with someone in my group of employees and servants."
"Is that it?"
"Pretty much." Morrigan stood from her chair and walked over to the bound girl. She put her hands on Bonnie's shoulders, a calm, regal smile on her face as the girl turned her head up to her. "All you need to do is work for us, and you'll have your freedom. So do we have a deal?"
There it was. Morrigan was laying it all out on the table: Bonnie's freedom or imprisonment. All it took was one answer, and it would all go up or downhill for the Darkhunter. No longer would she strike fear in the hearts of the Darkstalkers and humans alike, and if she tried, she would be locked away where she would never hurt another soul for as long as she lived.
"So this is it?" Bonnie asked as she gritted her teeth and looked up to meet the green-haired woman's gaze. "No special contracts? No using me? Just get the job done and get out?"
The Queen nodded, raising her head regally as she squeezed the Darkhunter's shoulders. "That's right. All you have to do is say yes."
With the shudder of his breath, Naruto pulled away from the glass and he walked towards the exit on his right, getting everyone's attention. He clenched his fist, angered at the Queen's decision. "I'll be right back. I just need some air."
Jon was quick to separate from the group and pursue the boy. "Naruto. Naruto!"
Everyone there looked on as the Human Prince and the Lycanthrope left the room. As warriors, they knew exactly how the boy was feeling. The fear, the pain, the anxiety, all just building up inside of him; he was close to having a meltdown. And the fact that Morrigan was offering to grant amnesty for B.B Hood's past actions only left him angrier.
"I'm going after them," stated Lucy as she walked towards the open door, each stride like steel as her resolve hardened. "I don't think Morrigan accounted for Romanoff's reaction to that psycho joining us."
A few minutes later... by the main hall...
By the right side of the main hall, a door in the middle slammed open as Naruto walked from it with his godfather and Lucy following along. Worry laced his mind as he walked in the bright, candlelit halls and made it to the door. He could hear his captain's footsteps catching up to him as he called out to the boy.
"Naruto, wait," Jon ordered, catching up yet keeping some distance. He had to give the boy his space.
The Human Prince ignored his superior and put his head down as he walked away.
Lucy came up to the Werewolf's right and cupped a hand to her mouth as she called out, "Kid, wait up!"
Naruto whipped around and glared at the two, stopping them from getting closer. "Just go back to the interrogation room!"
"Don't you dare raise your voice at me, Genin," Jon retorted in a snarl as he got close, grabbing Naruto by his arms as he cast a shadow over him. "Now listen here. We as shinobi have to try and keep calm no matter the situation."
"Taichou, she made a game of toying with my life yesterday," Naruto rejoined as he looked up to the towering man, his breath coming to a shudder. "W-What makes you think she's not going to turn on us?"
"Trust me, Naruto, I'm just as suspicious of Morrigan's plans. Half the time, I don't even know what's going through her head. All I know is that her burden as the Queen of this realm is heavy, and she's taking calculated risks, ones that can potentially ensure victory for us."
"Look, kid," Lucy chimed in and stepped forward. "Morrigan's been our friend for thousands of years, and we know about what she's faced during her time as the Queen of Makai. We could talk all about how Jedah's a major threat, or we could focus on gaining the strength needed to take him down."
"I'm sorry, okay?" Naruto said dejectedly as he shrugged off their arms and walked left towards the center of the hall. Closing his eyes, he ran his hands through his hair as he took a deep breath. "I just don't understand why Morrigan is recruiting her when she could prove to be a liability."
"I understand how you feel, Naruto," Jon said as his face softened in understanding. He slowly stepped forward, his hands now in his pockets. "Trust me, not all of us can even call ourselves proper allies. We all have to put aside our differences if the world of Makai and the human world are to be saved from Jedah's hold."
"Jon..." Naruto lowered his head and took another deep breath. "... I couldn't feel any of her emotions. All I could sense when fighting her was desire, bloodlust, and joy. It was like she... represented the most horrifying qualities of the human race."
"Kid." Lucy came forward and bent down to meet his gaze. She put a hand on his back and rubbed it. "Morrigan knows what she's doing. She knows how to handle people like this."
"Really?"
"Yeah. She's had years to learn how to read people with just a look. Her time as Queen has only made her stronger."
"Okay." The Human Prince lifted his head and faced the Catwoman. "So what will happen now?"
"Well, Romanoff..." Lucy stood tall and rolled her head to crack her neck before facing him. "B.B Hood is a Darkhunter; she'll be easily bought off if Morrigan manages to..." She brought up her hands to flex her fingers. "…'hire' her."
"She's right, Naruto," Jon said with a nod. "If anything, Bonnie will just be another thorn in Jedah's side."
Naruto breathed out. "Alright..."
"Good. Besides, we have an advantage Jedah doesn't. While he has his cultists, we have our wits and power. And that makes us a threat to his plans."
"Yes, sir." The Human Prince nodded in acceptance as he closed his eyes and breathed a sigh of relief. He then opened them to turn right to Lucy, an eyebrow raised in curiosity. "Romanoff? Just where did that nickname come from?"
"Well, when you jumped up, wrapped your legs around my neck, and then threw me to the ground like the Black Widow, I saw fit to call you that. I kind of thought you were her son," retorted the cynical Catwoman as she cocked her head playfully with a smirk to match.
"Now, if we're done here," Jon interjected, jerking his head left to the door in the middle of the hallway. "We'll be needed back in the observation room. We best head back now before we miss anything."
Naruto nodded firmly, confidence returning to his eyes. "Understood, sir."
"You got it, wolfy," Lucy complied. She walked past them and towards the door.
Naruto took to Jon's side as they trekked back to the door that led to the interrogation room further in the castle. The Human Prince knew that this was a mission, and it had to be completed. Since it was only temporary, he knew he had to deal with B.B Hood working with them.
Back in the interrogation room...
Morrigan and everyone else were now gathered in the bright room, the door open behind them for the missing members to enter. Baraba was at his Queen's side as she returned to her seat. Felicia and Grace stood by the wall facing the one-sided glass. Their eyes were locked onto the Darkhunter, keeping track of her movement.
"So, do we have a deal?" inquired Morrigan as she turned her head cutely with a confident smile. She brought her hands up and folded them on the table.
"Hmm," Bonnie hummed as she rolled her head, struggling against her constraints before settling down to meet her gaze. "Alright, I'm in. So what next?"
As soon as she said those words, Lucy, Jon, and Naruto came through the door.
"Good of you all to come back," Morrigan remarked jovially as she turned around. She got up from her chair and stepped towards Naruto, putting a hand on his shoulder before turning back to the Darkhunter. "Bonnie, Naruto will be your partner for the upcoming missions. You two will have to work together if we're to take down Jedah and his operations."
"What!" Jon, Naruto, and Lucy exclaimed in sync as they jumped back, staring at Morrigan in shock.
"Oh..." The Queen of Makai put a hand to her mouth as she looked down at the boy. "Looks like I have some explaining to do."
Lucy's jaw dropped as she stared at Morrigan in shock, Jon glared at her in silent rage, and Naruto just turned to face the Darkhunter. Today was just not his day.
Well... this was something. This chapter was a struggle to get out, but I'm at least glad I managed with it.
Bonnie is rather an interesting character, being a human in the Darkstalkers series. When the developers decided they wanted a human character, there would be a lot of pressure to ensure that they did it right. A straight out Martial Artist wasn't going to cut it when it came to the many monsters and creatures of the series. So in terms of presentation, this character would need to have a lot to go off of. Being human was one of the traits, but they wanted to ensure that this character wouldn't fade into the background when standing with the series' otherworldly monsters.
Every Darkstalkers character had been designed by fantasy, myth, and horror. When designing B.B Hood, Akira Yasuda (One of the character designers) wanted to do something a little more sinister. Instead of basing B.B Hood off an archetype, she would rather be inspired by the more horrifying qualities of the human race.
ScribeofDragons: That's a nice request, but that is far too big for me. In all honesty here, I can't do story requests. I just can't capture what other people would see in their ideas. Much less, I barely know much about the HP franchise other than the movies in general knowledge.
I'd like to thank my beta for their help, it means a lot.
