Interlude: Magic Theory 101

Professor Hermione Granger teaches Michelle, Wanda, and Pietro the basics of magic.

"Magic is complicated art and its inherent nature is much like mathematics or sciences, it will do it's very best to leave you confused. Just accept that fact and move on. Unlike specific sciences, however, magic is inherently different. Magic has always been and will likely always be separate from anything else because of how it works. Magic gets from point A to point B, accomplishing something in the process. But magic has to A) always be wielded by someone, and B) it will be different to every person, and sometimes even vary from time to time. You cannot have autonomous magic unless it was first created by a living magic-wielder. So magic will feel different to each of you, and you will each be better at one type of magic or another, depending on what best suits you.

Now, there are several types of magic as well as styles of wielding it. The main categories are like book, movie, or music genres. One act of magic can utilize several different categories, and there are blends between styles, just as the categories, or magic genres, will have subcategories. Now, I am going over this because you will have to learn at least a bare minimum, Magic Theory 101, before you will be allowed to utilize it. This is so you understand what you do, even though each of you have already been using your magic one way or another.

The first type and most commonly recognized as magic is active magic, most often called charms. This magic is an extension of your will using your power to affect the world around you. For example, Michelle, as you showed Teddy, levitating an object would be a charm, or, officially speaking, active magic. This magic cannot be blocked against, as it only affects non sentient things. For example, I could affect a spoon just like I could affect a bush. But I could not levitate any of you in this manner. It can, however, be dispelled after it is cast.

The second type is instantaneous magic and this one varies the most. Instantaneous magic is as it sounds, it is a burst of magic that has a certain effect. It either works or fails, and unlike active magic, once you start it, you cannot stop it. This type of magic, often called spells, can affect anything or anyone. If I wanted to render you unconscious, that would be an example of instantaneous magic, a spell. This magic can be blocked against, because it always appears as a beam, it has to first of all, be aimed, and secondly, can be blocked against. What is most commonly considered magic usually falls into this category if it is not a charm.

The third type is the one you have to eb the most careful with. Mental magic is a very delicate process, and there is only one technique you can use with 100% safety, if it doesn't work it will simply not work. That is called occlumency, it is an inner knowledge and allows more control over your own mind. You will be taught this to mastery before you will be taught any other mental magic, because if you fail on other mental magic, the results could be anything from a complete wipe of another person's mind to a complete wipe of your own. Occlumency will also help you shield against a range of mental attacks and probes, as well as helping you connect with your magic. How it is done varies greatly from person to person, as the technique that works for me will likely fail with you, as we are each different complex people and our minds are therefore also extremely different, and, by extension, the magic that affects them. This category also has some of the most powerful magic, for example, with years of training,Rose and I were able to completely mind-wipe an entire Hydra base, Wanda and Pietro that was Strucker's base, now you know what we mean by the punishment being justified. This is both extremely useful and evry dangerous, as you can tell.

The fourth type is passive magic. This includes nearly all enchantments, as well as warding and the like. Passive enchantments are defined as magic that you apply on something or someone, and until it is dispelled or you cancel its effects, it stays as it is. This magic can also be tied to an energy source other than yourself, for example, wards, which are simply magical protections, such as those over this place are tied to ley lines, magical energy rvers, running under the property which replenish themselves and feed the wards of the house. However, passive magic can never be truly untied from it's caster, although they can be passed down to other people, fully so if the caster were to die or lose their magic. There is also a subcategory of passive magic, which is PUA, passive until activation. This includes portkeys, the method all of you should have gotten here by. Portkeys are any nonliving item that, until touched by living cells with a certain activation phrase uttered, are simply items, and the spell is undetectable by any who are not innately familiar with the caster's magic. When activated, they pull all living cells attached to it directl, as well as all nonliving things the person has directly with them, such as clothing or luggage.

The fifth genre is detection is specifically meant to, as the title implies, detect something. It is simply a wave of magic that washes over a radius surrounding the caster to detect that which the caster's intent is to detect. The radius will vary, but it is generally around line of sight.

Now, there are some that do not fit into categories. For example, the fidelius charm, which is actually very incorrectly named. The fidelius charm is a piece of magic applied to an idea. It can be anything, from the location of a house certain people reside in to a name. Only one person holds the knowledge, and only they can share it. Anyone who the secret-keeper shares it with will know it, but will be unable to share it. That is a blend of categories, as you can tell.

There are also two other elements to most magic, and how it is wielded. Magic is an energy, but it is also semi-sentient. However, your magic is your own, it is simply a force whose sentience has absorbed into your own. So while there is some independent magic, such as the infinity stones, that I will make sure to teach you about, most magic's sentience belongs to it's wielder.

Magic, however, especially in the beginning, is difficult to control because magic is an energy that responds to your will, so any successful magic-user must not necessarily have a large amount of magic, but, instead, a rock-solid force of will and intent. So, many magic-wielders use an amplifier of magic. But do not make the mistake of using one as a crutch, relying on it. It will change your magic so that it will be very difficult to do without one. Neville, if you haven't met him yet, is like that. Without his amplifier, a wand, which is defined as a stick of magical wood with an inherently magical core inside, between the length of eight and fourteen inches. Magical wood is simply wood that has been touched by magic in some way so that it can conduct magic. For example, Neville's is made of cherry wood with unicorn hair. Yes, unicorns are real, although an endangered and extremely wild species.

So while you will each be provided with a focus, as much as possible will be taught to you without.

Now, there is also some extra magic that is not a category, as it is technically under the category of mind magic, but it really isn't. Magic that affects only yourself. That is simply channeling magic into some parts of yourself to enhance them, or using your magic as extra energy. You're all lucky that some of it comes naturally. For example, you will have inherently higher alcohol tolerances and will be immune to many poisons as well as organ failure, and have a higher healing factor.

For that reason, there is no limit on alcohol in any entirely magical household, not that I am telling you to go out drinking immediately. Similarly, all of you will heal faster, not to mention magical remedies not possible with muggle medicine, so if you want to do something risky, please just tell one of the magical adults, so we can be there to heal you just in case. I was a teenager too, relatively recently, so I'm just mentioning these things now.

However, some people will have more of a knack for this magic. From what I have seen of your superspeed, Pietro, this might be just your thing. You don't actually have super-speed, just a very large talent for application of your magic to yourself. Although there are ways of testing this for certain, I only know because you and Wanda are twins, and it is a known fact that there has never been a case of twins not having identical inherent magic, although usage of it, yet again, varies.*

Alright, and that sums up this less, if you haven't realized yet, we are no longer in the townhouse, this is the ancient Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Yes, we do have textbooks, yes, we will learn magic. Yes, we do have time dilation wards up so that you can breeze through this curriculum and be able to control your magic by the time we get back at the end of the day." Hermione finished, to her awed and raptly listening audience of three teenagers, none of whom had been fascinated by an actual lesson before in their life. And so they got on to practice.

A/N: I made all of this up, although none of it has been disproven by Harry Potter canon magic, or MCU magic either for the matter.

*Take that, (only) Harry potter Fanfic WBWL stories!
