"Merlin has magic."
Just three words from Uther Pendragon and Merlin felt his entire world collapsing. His heart pounding in his chest, his stomach in knots, he forced himself to look at Arthur. He'd imagined so many times what his friend's reaction would be when he told him about his magic. Having him learn it from Uther was not something he ever prepared for.
Arthur slowly lowered The Horn of Cathbad from his lips. Meeting Merlin's gaze he fully expected to see confusion, denial, anger, anything. Anything but absolute fear and sorrow laid bare in his eyes. Shaking his head slowly, he took an unsteady step backward. Merlin had lied to him all these years…he was a sorcerer.
Silently pleading with Arthur to understand, to forgive him, Merlin was grateful for the spears keeping him pinned to the door. Without them he would have fallen to his knees. He felt the hurt emanating off Arthur, saw the sting of betrayal in his face. There would be no forgiveness.
Uther stood between them, a self-satisfied smirk on his face. Not only had The Horn of Cathbad been all but forgotten, but he had finally managed to destroy the abiding bond between Arthur and his servant. Nothing would make him happier than to see his son take the life of the one person he trusted more than any other.
"Merlin," Arthur finally spoke, his voice low and strained. "Is it true?" he asked, needing to hear the words from his friend's mouth.
Merlin gave him a slight nod a single tear sliding down his cheek, "I am a sorcerer…I have magic. I'm sorry, Arthur, I never meant for you to find out like this."
"You have betrayed your king, you are nothing," Uther shouted. "You will die for your crimes. Arthur, end his worthless life now."
"No," Arthur said his voice sure and strong despite the emotional storm going on inside him.
Uther spun around, rage in his eyes. "Merlin has betrayed you and Camelot. Either you kill him, or I will!"
"No," Arthur said meeting his father's gaze defiantly, "You won't." He raised the Horn of Cathbad to his lips and blew. Uther vanished leaving them standing alone in the armory.
"Arthur…" Merlin said.
Raising his hand Arthur stopped him. "Don't…just don't…"
Merlin exhaled slowly then lifted his head. With a wave of his hand and a flash of gold in his eyes, the spears withdrew from the door falling harmlessly at his feet.
Arthur stood frozen in place. Any doubt in his mind was now gone with the blatant display of Merlin's magic. How had he not seen it before? Could it be that he had seen and just blindly dismissed it?
"Arthur," Merlin said, "Please say something."
"What the hell do you want me to say?" Arthur asked flatly, his eyes shining.
"Arthur, you are the one person I always wanted to know the truth. You have no idea how hard it was for me to keep it from you," Merlin said. "If I had been killed or banished I would not be able to remain by your side to protect you."
"Protect me?" Arthur scoffed.
"Yes!" Merlin said vehemently.
"How long, Merlin?" Arthur asked.
"How long?"
"How long have you practiced magic?"
Merlin gave his friend a tentative smile then shook his head. "Arthur, I don't practice magic. I am magic. I was born with it."
"That is impossible. You honestly expect me to believe that?"
"Arthur, listen to me, please!" Merlin said grabbing his arm.
"Do not touch me!" Arthur snapped. Jerking his arm back he swung at Merlin his fist impacting his jaw. "I trusted you!" he growled raising his fist to hit him again but a fleeting glimmer of gold in Merlin's eyes stopped him cold. He let his arm drop to his side then turned away releasing a ragged breath.
Merlin rubbed his jaw, his gaze softening. "You're afraid of me," he said sadly.
"Of course not, you're an idiot," Arthur responded, falling back on the familiar insult while keeping his gaze averted so Merlin wouldn't see the truth laid bare in his eyes.
"Arthur, there is no reason to fear me. You should know I could never harm you."
"I don't even know you!" Arthur said bitterly.
"Arthur, I am your servant and your friend. I am the same person who has been by your side through thick and thin. The same person who has saved your life over and over again."
"Why?" Arthur asked bluntly, turning to face him, "Why did you save my life? What could you possibly have to gain?"
"Arthur, there is nothing I wouldn't do for you. I would gladly die for you, and very nearly did on more than one occasion," Merlin said.
"Do you know what hurts the most?" Arthur asked. "That you did not trust me…me, Merlin! I can understand keeping your magic secret while my father was alive, but he has been gone for years. You could have told me."
"After what happened with your father, I was certain I had turned you against magic forever. I thought I would never be able to tell you," Merlin said then turned away.
"What do you mean?" Arthur asked confusion in his blue eyes.
"The old sorcerer who tried to heal your father…"
"What about him?"
"It was me," Merlin said hesitantly.
"What are you talking about, Merlin?"
"I used an aging spell. It was the only way I could use my magic without revealing my identity."
"It was you…you killed my father?" Arthur stared at him.
"No, I didn't…the spell I used was working. It was Morgana, she gave Agravaine an enchanted amulet which he'd put around Uther's neck. It reversed the healing spell tenfold. Gaius found it after. I did everything in my power to save him."
Arthur stared at Merlin blindly as pieces began to come together in his mind. "It would have been in your best interest to just let him die. Why risk so much to save him?" Arthur demanded.
"Because Arthur," Merlin answered his voice breaking, "You asked me to."
"Merlin…" Arthur looked at his servant…friend…a sorcerer.
"Yes, Sire?"
"You need to leave."
Merlin's eyes flashed with fear, "Leave Camelot?"
Arthur chuckled despite his jumbled emotions. "No, you idiot. Just leave me, I need time to work through this. Give me some time, please."
"Yes, My Lord," Merlin said his voice catching in his throat. He walked to the door, glanced back at Arthur, then left the room.
Arthur turned in a complete circle running his hands through his hair before sitting down hard on a bench. He gazed absently at the two spears still lying on the floor. Then it hit him just how close he'd come to losing Merlin. Pressing his hands to his eyes his shoulders shook quietly.
Merlin stood alone by the windows in the corridor watching the sunrise. Beautiful streaks of lavender, blue and gold breaking through low hanging clouds.
He felt dread rising in his chest. If Arthur could not forgive him, everything would change. He would either be killed or banished from Camelot, from his friends, his home. He wasn't sure which would be a worse fate to be alone or dead.
Even if Arthur allowed him to remain as his servant, it would be impossible to protect the king without his complete trust. It had taken years for Merlin to earn it in the beginning and it would be next to impossible to gain it back now.
"Merlin?" Gwen's voice startled him.
"My Lady," Merlin bowed, "You shouldn't be up. You were hurt."
"I am all right. Gaius said I have to take it easy for a few days."
"I'm glad you are better," Merlin said.
"Thanks to you, I understand. You saved me."
"I could never let you die," Merlin said, his voice quivering slightly.
"Merlin, what's wrong?" she asked, "You look upset."
"I'm fine…really."
Gwen reached out placing her hand on his arm. "Merlin, I may be the queen, but I am your friend first. Please, let me help."
"There's nothing you can do. There's nothing anyone can do."
"Did something happen between you and Arthur?"
Merlin huffed then nodded, "You could say that."
"Gaius said the two of you went searching for Uther's spirit."
"Yes, he is back where he belongs. He won't hurt you again."
"It was him, wasn't it? Uther said or did something to you, didn't he?" Gwen asked.
Merlin nodded, "Uther was going to hurt Arthur. I confronted him and he attacked me, but I stopped him."
"You stopped him…how?"
"With magic," Merlin said his gaze lifting to meet Gwen's expecting to see the same hurt and betrayal in her eyes.
"You have magic," Gwen smiled brightly.
"Yes," Merlin said slightly bemused, "Why do you not seem at all surprised?"
"Merlin, I have seen enough over the years to realize that there was more to you than meets the eye. I have long suspected that it was you who saved my father and all this time you have been at Arthur's side keeping him safe."
"Well, now he knows, and I don't know what he is going to do to me."
"Merlin," Gwen smiled squeezing his hand, "Arthur cares for you. I am certain he will forgive you."
"But will he ever trust me again?"
"I trust you with my life," Gwen said, "I will talk to him. Everything will be all right, I promise."
"Thank you, My Lady," Merlin smiled.
"Merlin, I am your friend, and I always will be."
"I should probably try to get some sleep," Merlin said, "We were up all night."
"Then it is a good thing I gave you back your bed," Gwen smiled squeezing his hand, "Where is Arthur now?"
"I left him in the armory."
"Go get some rest. I will check on him."
Merlin nodded, "Please, tell him I'm sorry."
"I will, now go," Gwen said nudging him in the direction of Gaius' chambers. She watched him until he passed through the doorway then made her way to the armory. She entered the room to find her husband sitting on a bench his head in his hands.
"Arthur," Gwen said softly.
Arthur got to his feet immediately, "Guinevere, what are you doing out of bed?"
"Gaius said I could go if I promised to take it easy for a few days. I feel fine. Just a headache."
"I'm so sorry for what my father did to you," Arthur said wrapping her in his embrace. "If I lost you…" he said kissing her tenderly then pressed his forehead to hers. "He's gone now. I sent him back to the spirit world."
"Merlin told me. I saw him in the corridor."
"Merlin," Arthur said tilting his head back with an exasperated sigh.
"He was so distraught."
"I'm afraid that is my doing."
"He never meant to hurt you."
Arthur looked at her. "He told you?"
"Yes, he did."
"Merlin was your friend all these years, are you not angry?"
"Not at all. I have long suspected there was something special about Merlin," Gwen smiled, "I just never knew for certain what it was."
"He's a sorcerer!" Arthur stated emphatically.
Gwen giggled softly her dark eyes sparkling.
"Guinevere?" he asked, confused by her mirth.
"I love you dearly, Arthur, you know that. But you do tend to be a bit dense when it comes to Merlin."
"Thanks," he frowned.
"Arthur, have you never wondered how you always escaped death and injury or how when things were at their darkest Camelot always triumphed. Unexplained miracles, attacks thwarted, monsters killed, Morgana, Morgause and their immortal army defeated. And you never realized Merlin was at the center of all of it?"
Arthur sat back down on the bench running both hands through his hair. "He was, wasn't he."
"I am certain it was Merlin who saved you after the bite of the Questing Beast. I don't how he did it, but I know he was responsible."
"He came to me after I woke up. I remember thinking it was odd because it seemed like he was trying to say goodbye. He said he was happy to be my servant until the day he died."
"I believe it had something to do with his mother."
"His mother?" Arthur asked.
"Hunith came to Gaius' chambers that night, during the storm. She was dying of a horrible illness…an illness that did not seem natural…I believe it was magical. Merlin left Camelot the next morning and then suddenly his mother was healed."
Arthur fell silent staring at the stone floor. "So, whatever he did to save me…"
"It nearly cost him his mother."
"I feel like such a fool, Gwen. You saw these things; how could I miss them?"
"I was a servant," Gwen smiled, "When you are invisible it is easier to observe things others tend to miss."
"You were never invisible to me, Guinevere," Arthur said.
"Yes, but Merlin was, in many ways. You only saw him as a bumbling servant rather than the strong, brave and loyal friend who would gladly give his life for you, for me and for Camelot."
Arthur pulled Gwen onto his lap wrapping his arms around her. "I've been a fool. All this time I couldn't see Merlin for what he truly was. I wouldn't have told me the truth either."
"Arthur, you and Merlin have a profound bond. I know it and so do you."
"I need to talk to him," Arthur said with determination.
"Not now, my love. He has gone to his chambers for some sleep, and you should do the same. You are clearly exhausted."
Arthur nodded, "I'll get some rest then go see him later."
"Good idea," Gwen smiled, then sliding off his lap, she took his hand.
"I love you, Guinevere," Arthur said kissing her. Then he scooped her up in his arms making her giggle.
"I love you, My Lord," Gwen said kissing him back.
Merlin woke up late morning after a few restless hours of sleep. He slid out of bed then put his boots on. Bounding down the steps he looked around for Gaius, but he wasn't there. Opening the door, he ran headlong into the king.
"Arthur!" he exclaimed, nearly jumping out of his skin.
"Merlin, finally got your lazy backside out of bed?" Arthur stifled a laugh at Merlin's obvious discomfort.
"Yeah, I thought…well, I mean…I wasn't sure if I still had a job."
"I need to talk to you."
Merlin stepped back into the room. He waited for Arthur to walk past him then closed the door. Sitting down at the table, Merlin placed both hands on the back of his neck. He felt the tension increasing as the king wandered aimlessly about the room picking up and putting down bottles, vials, and various other random objects.
"Arthur?"
"Yes, well…I need to talk to you," Arthur said turning around.
"You said that already," Merlin smirked.
"Right, well…" Arthur sat down across the table from his servant.
Merlin lowered his head again then turned to look toward the window.
"Merlin," Arthur said.
"What?" Merlin asked looking at him tentatively.
"I'm sorry."
Merlin raised an eyebrow. "Why are you sorry? I'm the one who betrayed you."
"True," Arthur smiled, "But I now understand why you felt you could not tell me."
"It's not that I didn't want to. I tried…I just couldn't."
"I treated you like you were invisible didn't I."
Merlin nodded, "Sometimes it felt that way."
"Guinevere told me that as a servant she felt invisible and that it allowed her to observe things that others missed. That is how you felt. It's also how you knew things I didn't. It's how you knew about Morgana and Agravaine betraying me."
"I learned very quickly that as a servant my word meant nothing. But it didn't stop me from trying to tell you what I knew."
"And I failed to listen," Arthur said. He noticed Merlin's eyes suddenly cloud over as he seemed to be struggling with something. "Merlin, what is it?"
"Agravaine…"
"What about him?"
"I killed him."
Arthur looked at Merlin seeing for the first time the weight of everything in his eyes. The conflict, the torment, and the utter sadness over the choices he'd been forced to make. He felt it all deep in his core.
"You're talking about in the tunnels…when you went back?"
Merlin nodded slowly. "I didn't want to, it just happened. He kept pushing me to tell him where you were. I was trapped between him, his men and a dead end."
"What happened?"
"I used magic to throw them all backward. Agravaine went down, but he got back up. It was then that he realized who I really was. I knew he would tell Morgana. I had to stop him. When he attempted to throw his dagger, I hurled him back with such force…he died instantly."
"Merlin, I'm sorry you were ever put in that position. It wasn't your fault.
"I know…It's just that…"
"What?"
"Sometimes it scares me…how far I am willing to go to protect you. Sometimes I wonder if I am really any different from Agravaine or Morgana…if I am a monster," Merlin said his voice breaking.
"Merlin, you are not a monster."
"I saw you…you were frightened of me."
"I admit I was afraid. Of the magic though…not you."
"Arthur, I am the magic. It is part of me…it is me. I have used it for you."
"Merlin, I am trying to wrap my head around all of this. It isn't easy to grasp. But there is one thing of which I am absolutely certain. You are not evil. You are not a monster."
Merlin looked at Arthur thoughtfully. "I hope you'll still feel that way after you hear what all I have done. I've made mistakes."
"What did you mean when you said Agravaine realized who you really were? Who are you?" Arthur asked.
Merlin lowered his head pressing his palms flat against the table. He closed his eyes for a moment then looked at his friend. "There are some…the Druids…they know me by another name. From their legends written long before I was even born. To them I am Emrys. I am the sorcerer destined to help the Once and Future King to unite the five kingdoms and bring about a world of peace and prosperity for all…including those with magic."
Arthur stared at him for a moment then shook his head. "Merlin, the weight you have carried on your shoulders all this time. I thought my own destiny was overwhelming. Morgana mentioned Emrys. At the time I wondered who she was talking about. She told me that not even Emrys could save me."
"Morgana has been scouring the kingdoms looking for Emrys. For now, she has no idea that it is me."
"And if she ever does find out…"
"Then Morgana will stop at nothing to kill me."
"Why? I would think that she would want Emrys to succeed. She wants magic to be accepted again."
"Morgana sees the future in her dreams. And while I don't know exactly what she has seen, I do know that we both saw the Cailleach the night she tore the veil between the worlds. It was the Cailleach that told her about me. That I was her doom."
Arthur shook his head slowly, "This is all just too much."
Merlin chuckled softly.
"What?" the king asked.
"Arthur, there is so much to tell you. I don't even know where to begin. And some of it may be hard for you to accept."
"Harder than finding out my manservant is a powerful sorcerer and that my deranged sister wants his head on a pike?"
"I'm sorry, Arthur."
Arthur looked at his friend as if he were seeing him for the first time. "Merlin, after the bandits ambushed us years ago and you were injured in the fight. The rock fall…"
"That was me," Merlin said, "I caused the rock fall to shield you from the bandits."
"You shouldn't have done that," Arthur frowned.
"I had to. It is my duty to protect you."
"What really happened? After Gwaine and I found you in the bog, covered in mud and brought you back to Camelot you never spoke of it again."
Merlin nodded, "I remember the bandits dragging me through the woods. I must have passed out at some point because the next thing I remember was a bucket of cold water being dumped over me by Morgana."
"Morgana," Arthur said in surprise.
"I was bound, hung by my arms in her hovel. Let's just say she was a bit angry with me for upsetting her plans to take Camelot and for, as she put it, condemning Morgause to a slow and painful death."
"So, it was you that stopped the immortal army," Arthur said.
"Yes, well and Lancelot. We told you we were going to take out the warning bell. Instead, we fought our way to the Cup of Life. When I emptied it of the blood the army was destroyed."
"Merlin, how did you get away from Morgana?"
"I didn't…not really," Merlin said, "She conjured a Fomorroh, a snake-like creature with multiple heads. Cutting off one of its heads she then imbedded it beneath the skin on the back of my neck enabling her to control my mind. She ordered me to kill you."
"Kill me?" Arthur asked.
"I don't remember anything from when I was under its control. Gaius and Gwen realized something was wrong and they stopped me. Gaius removed the head, but it just grew back taking control of me again. He was finally able to paralyze the serpent long enough for me to return to Morgana's hovel and destroy the Fomorroh. She and I fought, I won. I know I should have killed her, but I couldn't."
Arthur had an uneasy look in his eyes as he listened. Serpents…mind control…he shuddered visibly. "Merlin, you could have easily killed me with your magic."
Merlin nodded, "Either my magic was suppressed while I was under Morgana's control or maybe some part of me protected you instinctively."
"I'm sorry," Arthur said.
"For what?"
"Merlin," Arthur said looking into his friend's eyes, "When they told me you were gone…all I could think about was how badly I have treated you over the years. There are so many things I should have said to you long ago."
"Arthur…"
"Just listen for once."
"Yes, Sire," Merlin smirked.
"I know I am not the easiest person to be around or to work for. When my father made you my manservant all those years ago, I fully expected you to quit like every other servant I'd had before."
"The thought did cross my mind once or twice."
Arthur chuckled then rolled his eyes. "What I am trying to say is I am grateful for your courage, your tenacity, your loyalty…and most of all your friendship. Thank you, Merlin…just, thank you."
Merlin nodded, "You're welcome."
"I've also appreciated your advice and guidance over the years."
"Even though you never listen to me?"
"I listen," Arthur said then shrugged, "Just selectively…"
"Thank you for not chopping my head off," Merlin grinned.
"The light…" Arthur said looking at him thoughtfully. "It was you, wasn't it? When you drank the poison from the goblet, and I went to get the Mortaeus flower. Nimueh left me to die in that cave. Someone sent a light to guide me."
Merlin nodded then smiled, "I was unconscious, but I somehow knew you were in danger. Gaius told me later that he had to send Gwen out of the room once he realized I was incanting a spell. He saw the light and when he drew back the blanket, the orb was there in my palm."
Arthur chuckled softly, "I remember thinking it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen in my life. It felt safe…it gave me strength and courage. I never told my father the details. I knew it was magic, and I knew instinctively that it was not evil. I owe you so much, Merlin."
"You don't owe me anything," Merlin said softly lowering his gaze.
"How the hell are you so humble? With all your power…"
"I'll leave the arrogance to you."
"Funny," Arthur grinned as he got up from the table. "I have a council meeting to attend. You take the rest of the day off and get some rest. That's an order."
"A day off?" Merlin asked in surprise.
"Don't get used to it."
"Thank you, Sire."
Arthur started toward the door then stopped turning back to look at Merlin. "One more thing. Gwen told me…about your mother. When she was deathly ill. It was because of me, wasn't it? You did something to save my life and it nearly cost you your mother."
"I killed the Questing Beast after it bit you. The only way to save your life was to go to the source of its power…The Old Religion. At the Isle of the Blessed I found Nimueh, she gave me water from the Cup of Life to heal you, but the price was a life. I bargained my own, but she chose to take my mother in my place."
"What did you do?" Arthur asked.
"I went back to force her to take mine and let my mother live, but Gaius got there first. He offered himself to save me. When I arrived, he was already on the ground. Nimueh hurled fireballs at me while trying to convince me to join her, but I refused. I called down lightning from the sky…the balance was restored."
"You killed Nimueh," Arthur said. Walking back to his friend, he put his hands on the younger man's shoulders. "Promise me, you will never do anything like that again."
"I cannot make that promise. It is my duty to protect you no matter what the cost."
"Merlin…" Arthur began, but the look in Merlin's eyes made it clear to him that there was nothing he could say to sway him. "You are a stubborn ass," he said then pulled his friend into his embrace.
Merlin drew back a baffled grin on his face, "That was a hug."
"Your intelligence truly has no limits," Arthur chuckled then smacking him on the back of the head, he turned and left.
Merlin stood there in the middle of the room laughing.
The storm hit just before dusk catching Merlin and Arthur out in the open on their way back from hunting. They were both soaked through to the skin in seconds.
"I told you there was a storm brewing," Merlin called out to Arthur over the wind. "But no, you just had to go hunting."
"Shut up, Merlin." Arthur said rolling his eyes.
"We could have been home by the fire instead of out here soaked to the bone."
"Merlin!"
Merlin grinned. Truthfully, he didn't mind the rain. When he was a child, his mother used to scold him for running out into the pouring rain. More than a few times it had resulted in him getting sick, but it never stopped him from doing it again.
"You're so all powerful, Merlin, can't you make it stop?" Arthur asked chuckling.
"Why would I want to do that?"
"Then don't complain."
"Me? Complain? Never," Merlin said shaking his head slightly.
Arthur looked back at him curiously. "Could you, do it? If you wanted to?"
"Maybe."
"Just how powerful are you anyway?"
Merlin shrugged, "According to the Druids I am the most powerful sorcerer to ever walk the earth."
"I'm not sure if that is comforting or terrifying," Arthur said raising an eyebrow.
"Magic is merely a tool," Merlin said, "It's usefulness and capability depend upon knowledge and the strength to wield it. I had to learn spells and study the lore and history, which wasn't easy considering the lack of books in Camelot."
"But you said you could use it as a child."
"Yes, I could use it, but I could not direct or control it. Moving objects, while amusing for a three-year-old, can really wreak havoc in a village of people who fear magic. I caused a whole lot of problems for my mother."
"Your friend Will, he wasn't really a sorcerer was he."
"No, he lied to protect my secret so I could continue to protect you."
"What I still don't understand is how your mother could send you to Camelot knowing the danger you would be in."
"I was in danger in Ealdor as well. If Cenred had found out about my abilities he would have made me one of his slaves. The idea of being forced to do his bidding was far more frightening than the possibility of being executed for using magic in Camelot."
"Well, for what it's worth I am glad you came to Camelot," Arthur grinned.
"Really?" Merlin asked.
"Of course," Arthur said as he slowed his horse, dropping back to ride alongside his servant. "I hope you don't mind me asking you questions about it. I am genuinely curious."
"Not at all," Merlin grinned.
"Good," Arthur smiled.
"All I ever wanted was for you to see me…the real me. I hated hiding my magic from you more than anyone else."
"You are living breathing proof that my father was wrong, that not all magic is evil."
"Magic itself is not evil. It is all around us," Merlin said, "It is what people like Morgana choose to do with it that is evil."
"Do you think you could beat her?" Arthur asked, "If it came down to it."
Merlin thought for a moment then gave a slight nod. "I believe so."
"I'm sorry, Merlin. It isn't fair for me to even ask that of you."
"Arthur, I will always protect you and Camelot no matter the threat."
"I know you will. But Merlin, you deserve more. You deserve to have a life of your own. Don't you want to one day have a wife…a family?"
"Maybe, one day…It's not like I have anyone in my life to even consider the possibility," Merlin chuckled. "My hands are a little full."
"What about the woman at the tavern, she certainly seemed to fancy you?" Arthur smirked.
"Oh yes, Mary," Merlin said a sly grin on his face.
Arthur looked at him, raising an eyebrow, "You and Mary?"
"Maybe."
"You're kidding right?"
Merlin shrugged, "She made me dinner once."
"Just Dinner?" Arthur asked with a smirk.
"Well, her husband came home…"
"Merlin!"
"What?"
Arthur laughed, "You're joking right?"
"Maybe."
"Seriously though," Arthur said, "There's never been anyone?"
"Morgana," Merlin said his voice catching in his throat.
Arthur looked at him thoughtfully. "You did have feelings for her."
"I did…when I realized she had magic I thought we were the same. I was drawn to her. Then I poisoned her."
"Poisoned her?" Arthur asked in shock.
"She was the willing vessel for Morgause's sleeping spell. The only way to break the enchantment was to kill her. I held her in my arms as she was dying, and I felt a part of me dying with her."
"Merlin…"
"When we found her and brought her back to Camelot, I was certain she would tell Uther what I did. But she told me that she understood. That she forgave me. Instead, she used it…held it over my head to keep me from telling you what she and Morgause were planning to do."
"Merlin, I am sorry you had to go through all that alone. Morgana was my responsibility. I should have saved her. If I had been there for her…"
"No, Arthur, I was the only one who could have helped her. I knew exactly what she was going through. I could have saved her. If I had just told her I had magic, that she wasn't alone. Maybe Morgause wouldn't have been able to corrupt her so easily."
"We'll never know if it would have made a difference. Perhaps nothing could have saved her. If anyone is to blame it is my father. It was his hatred and fear that drove her away from us and into Morgause's waiting arms."
"Arthur, there is still so much I need to tell you."
"Let's get out of this rain first," Arthur said motioning toward a small hut nestled in the trees, "It looks empty, I'm sure they won't mind sheltering the king and his servant for the night."
Merlin watched as Arthur urged his horse down the rain-slickened slope. He waited for him to reach level ground then followed. They tethered the horses beneath the trees for cover then went inside. There was a fireplace and an abundant supply of wood.
"Forbearnan," Merlin said holding his hand out toward the hearth igniting the wood then turned to see Arthur watching him.
"That explains a few things," Arthur laughed.
"What do you mean?"
"The fire in the slave trader's castle."
"Oh yeah…I forgot about that."
As Arthur started to take off his armor, he remembered another incident that had always baffled him. "That time in the Valley of the Fallen Kings…I was shot in the back by the bandits. You said the arrow didn't pierce my armor, but you were lying, weren't you? It did."
Merlin rose to his feet to help his friend remove the armor. "Yes, it did."
"You healed me?"
"I tried, but I couldn't. At least not fully. I had help."
"Who?"
"An old…rather long dead sorcerer named Taliesin. He healed you. Then he took me to the Crystal Cave."
"The Crystal Cave?"
"It is the birthplace of magic. The Crystal of Neahtid, the one we retrieved from Alvarr and his renegades…it came from that cave. It was both the most beautiful and the most frightening place I have ever seen."
"Why?"
Merlin removed the last piece of armor stacking it on a table before taking a seat on the floor in front of the fireplace. "My powers allowed me to see things in the crystals, visions…images."
"What did you see?" Arthur asked standing at the hearth holding his hands out toward the flames.
"Morgana killing your father and her sitting on the throne of Camelot."
"That's why you were acting so strangely after."
"The events I saw happened," Merlin said turning to look at the king. "In trying to stop them I ended up making them come to fruition."
"What do you mean?"
"Morgana's fall was my fault. I used magic to stop her thinking she was going to kill Uther. I slammed the door shut in front of her and she lost her balance. I never meant to hurt her…just stop her."
Arthur met Merlin's gaze seeing the storm of emotions in his eyes. "Morgana was dying, and you saved her didn't you. How were you able to heal her fractured skull if you couldn't heal me from the arrow?"
"The Great Dragon."
"What?"
"Remember I said there were things you weren't going to like…this is one of them," Merlin said.
"Merlin?"
"I went to the dragon for a spell I could use to save her life. At first, he refused, but I commanded him to help me."
"You commanded a dragon?"
"Yes."
Arthur sat down on a chair putting his head in his hands for a moment to take in this revelation. "Merlin…I know I am going to regret asking this, but did you release the dragon?"
"Yes."
"Merlin!" Arthur shouted, "What were you thinking? People died."
"Don't you think I know that?" Merlin asked tears brimming in his eyes.
"Why did you do it?"
"I gave him my word that I would release him in exchange for all the times he helped me to save Camelot. I should have known he would attack and kill innocent people. I should have known that he wanted revenge. Uther imprisoned him beneath the castle…destroyed all his kind…his kin. My kin."
"Your kin? What the hell are you talking about?" Arthur demanded.
"The Dragonlords…Uther had them all killed but one."
"Yes, Balinor…I know," Arthur said.
"When Balinor died his powers passed to his only son…to me."
"Balinor was your father?" Arthur asked while staring at Merlin as if he had grown a second head.
"Yes."
Arthur's face fell as he remembered Merlin's reaction to the Dragonlord's death. "Merlin, Balinor died in your arms that day…your own father died in your arms."
"Yes," Merlin said swiping at a tear that slid down his face.
"I saw how distraught you were and yet I told you that no man was worth your tears…Merlin…I'm so sorry."
"You didn't know."
"I should have realized there was more to it. I saw your eyes when you turned to face me after he died."
"I couldn't tell you the truth about him because of Uther."
Arthur moved from the chair to sit on the floor next to Merlin. "So, when you told me that I killed the dragon you lied. You let him go. How did you stop him from attacking Camelot?"
"I am the last Dragonlord, Kilgharrah has to obey me."
"Kilgharrah…the dragon has a name…and he speaks?"
"Yes, he does."
"You said he helped you save Camelot?"
"Yes, many times both before and after I released him."
Arthur shook his head. "This is…"
"Arthur, the decisions I made…I did what I thought was right."
"And Morgana after you healed her…"
"It was while she was unconscious, that she overheard your father tell Gaius that she was his daughter. She was hurt and angry that he'd lied to her…disowned her. She lashed out and tried to kill him, but I stopped her."
"Honestly, I cannot blame her for feeling that way. My father never should have lied. He should have told us both the truth."
"After that, she became hell bent on taking the throne of Camelot."
Arthur struggled to think…to focus. He closed his eyes listening to the rain and the wind outside. Merlin was responsible for the deaths and destruction wrought by the Great Dragon on Camelot and yet he was also responsible for saving the kingdom from not only the dragon, but from countless other threats.
"Arthur, I'm sorry."
"Merlin," Arthur said turning to stare into the flames, "I—I forgive you. I know you never meant to hurt anyone."
Merlin's shoulders sagged in relief hearing those words. "Thank you, Arthur."
Turning to face his friend, Arthur half smiled, "Anymore devastating revelations for me?"
"Thankfully, that is the worst of it," Merlin said as he sat down across from his king.
"Well, thank goodness for that at least."
"Dragonlord?" Arthur asked.
"Yes."
"The dragon's egg in the tomb…you saved it didn't you."
Merlin nodded. "I did."
"So that is where Morgana got the dragon."
"Aithusa isn't evil."
"That dragon has a name too."
"Yes, I named him when I called him from the egg."
"Merlin," Arthur said shaking his head.
"Don't forget, if it weren't for me you would have a troll for a stepmother, the ears of a donkey, and married to a Sidhe."
"A Sidhe?" Arthur asked.
"Elena was possessed by a fairy. Gaius and I expelled it from her before the wedding which didn't happen because you followed my advice and didn't marry her."
"Right," Arthur laughed, "That explains the obvious change in her from the time she arrived to when she left."
"Yes."
"Gaius knew all along?"
"About my magic? Yes."
"So, he was lying when Agravaine and I questioned him. Lying to protect you. Gaius told me that I would one day understand just how much they have done for me, he was talking about you."
"Not just me…there are many others who helped me to protect you."
"Why did you choose to do this, Merlin?"
"It wasn't exactly a choice…not at first anyway. When I came to Camelot, Kilgharrah told me that my gift…my powers were given to me for a reason. That I was destined to protect you…The Once and Future King. What began as destiny and duty soon became a friendship that I would gladly die to protect. It is for you that I do this, Arthur."
Arthur looked into Merlin's eyes and smiled. "Thank you, old friend."
"You're welcome."
"Just will you please not keep me in the dark on these things anymore?"
"All right," Merlin nodded.
"I don't want you bargaining your life for mine ever again."
"Yes, sire."
"That doesn't sound very sincere," Arthur smirked.
Merlin chuckled, "Fine…I promise I won't bargain my life for yours unless it is absolutely the only option."
"Merlin…"
"I'm going to check on the horses," Merlin said getting up and heading to the door. He stepped outside to find that the rain had stopped, and the air was completely still…too still. "Arthur."
"What is it?" Arthur asked as he stepped out into the darkness behind Merlin. He felt it immediately. The night was deathly quiet.
"Arthur, something isn't right."
Drawing his sword, the king stepped further into the chilly night. Merlin reached for a torch lying next to the door and lit it with a word and a flash of gold in his eyes. The torch illuminated the area, but they saw nothing.
"We should go back inside," Arthur said his voice barely above a whisper.
"Yeah," Merlin nodded taking a step backward just as invisible hands gripped his throat, arms, and torso.
The torch dropped to the ground. Arthur spun around just in time to see the whites of Merlin's eyes as he was pulled into the darkness by an unseen force. His sword sliced through the air as he reached down picking up the torch. Merlin was gone.
"Merlin!" he shouted in desperation.
"It's so nice to see you again, Arthur," Morgana said emerging from the darkness on a jet-black horse.
"Morgana, bring Merlin back now," Arthur hissed through clenched teeth.
"Don't worry Merlin…or should I say Emrys, will be taken care of. The question is, dear brother, which means more to you…Camelot or Merlin…you can't save both."
"Morgana, please…"
"Hush now," Morgana said then waving her hand she uttered a spell causing him to crumple lifelessly to the wet earth. She slid off her horse walking slowly toward him. She could feel the power emanating off the sword in his right hand. Pulling it from his grip, she held up in the air. "Beautiful indeed," she whispered.
Making her way back to her horse, she sheathed the sword, just as two figures emerged from the darkness lifting her back into the saddle. With one last look at her brother, she smiled, then yanking the head of the stallion around she galloped off into the night.
Merlin's eyelids felt heavy as he tried to open them. His ears were ringing, his head felt as though it was split in two, and his throat felt like he'd swallowed one of Arthur's dirty socks. He was lying on his side on a cold stone floor, his shoulder screaming every time he took a breath. But he was alive.
Forcing his eyes open, his vision focused on a small window. Moonlight streamed through the bars, illuminating a gigantic rat, just an arm's length from his face, feeding on something he dared not identify.
Taking a deep breath, he rolled onto his back biting his bottom lip to keep from crying out as pain ripped through his body like a thousand daggers. He struggled to slow his breathing.
"Ow," he choked. Lifting his head, he looked down at his body, there were no visible injuries at least. Whatever the thing was that grabbed him it could have easily killed him. Instead, he was alive and locked in a cell with no idea where he was or how long he had been unconscious.
Merlin saw a thick rope wrapped around a stone pillar next to him. He reached up grabbing hold of it. With a throaty growl, he hauled himself to his feet. His legs felt wobbly, but they supported his weight. Somehow standing lessened the pain in his head.
Leaning against the pillar to catch his breath, his chest tightened. Launching himself off it toward the window he sent the rat scurrying into a dark corner with its meal. The window was at ground level. Deformed trees lined a partially crumbled stone wall, their twisted snake-like branches seemed to be reaching for the moon. He had no idea where he was. Or where Arthur was.
Feeling his way along the wall to the darkest side of the fairly large cell, his hand wrapped around the cold bars of the door. "Tospringe," he said his eyes flashing gold his hand outstretched. The door didn't budge. He tried again with the same result. It was locked magically.
"Great," he said under his breath. Whoever had him knew he had magic. Hearing a sound Merlin spun around just as the torches on the walls ignited all at once, flooding the cell with light.
"We have been here before, haven't we, Merlin?"
"Morgana," Merlin said stepping back as she appeared at the cell door. She had traded her black frock for a beautiful blood red silk and lace gown. Her dark hair was pulled back into a tight braid. For a moment he almost believed she was the girl he once knew, but one look into her eyes shattered that image.
"You have been in and out of consciousness for three days. I was beginning to worry you would never wake up."
"What and deprive you the enjoyment of torturing and killing me," Merlin asked with a smirk, "Never."
"Come now, I have made sure you were looked after. At least this place is far more luxurious than the hovel," Morgana said.
"I rather liked your hovel. It was cozy…homey…well, except for the snake problem. I much prefer the rat."
"Very funny, Merlin."
"Where is Arthur?"
"There is no need to worry about my brother anymore."
"Where is he?" Merlin asked, "What have you done to him?"
"Poor Merlin…so devoted to your king that even when you are in mortal danger all you care about is Arthur." Morgana smiled her eyes flashing gold as she flung him back against the stone pillar so hard, he yelped. Jerking her head to the side, the cell door opened with such force that it fractured one of the stones protruding from the wall.
Merlin groaned, his head spinning. Morgana entered the cell, scarlet silk billowing out around her. He looked past her to the open door. If she knew about his magic, it wouldn't take long for her to figure out that he is Emrys.
"Go ahead, Merlin…you won't get far," Morgana smiled, "If my men don't kill you, my little pet will."
"That thing…what was it?"
"Let's just say I have acquired many new abilities since we last saw each other. I am far more powerful than anyone. Maybe even you…Emrys."
Merlin's eyes widened in fear. She knew.
"There it is. How I have longed to see that look of terror in your eyes. You kept your secret for so long. All to protect Arthur and now he is dead. You failed."
"Morgana, I know you have every reason to hate me," Merlin said, fighting back the anguish he felt at her words. He wouldn't give her the satisfaction of seeing him fall apart. Besides, Arthur was not dead…he couldn't be.
"You're so right. When I came to you for help you turned me away…made me feel that I was all alone. I hate you because you poisoned me to save Camelot and my brother. You betrayed me and every other person with magic."
"You're wrong, I wanted to help you…I tried…"
"But you didn't, did you? You cared more about protecting your secret for the sake of my brother than you did for me. I was foolish enough to believe that you were my friend…possibly even…" Morgana's voice drifted off as she stopped herself from revealing too much.
"I did care for you, Morgana…more than you know. I could not reveal myself. Uther would have killed me without hesitation. You were his ward…his daughter. I was nothing more than a servant."
"You were much more than that though, weren't you," she said bitterly.
"I was a boy with a destiny I was struggling to understand. A boy with powers I could not even begin to fathom. Forced to leave my home for a place where I was hated for how I was born. I was just as lost as you were, Morgana. I am sorry I didn't do more to help you. I wish I could change things. Take back the choices I made."
"Like poisoning me?" she asked.
"Yes," Merlin said without hesitation, his eyes betraying his emotions, "Because in that moment, I became the monster I'd always feared I was." He lowered his head swiping at tears with the back of his hand, "Holding you in my arms as you gasped for breath…it wasn't what I wanted. It was the last thing I wanted."
Morgana stared at him silently, taken aback by the very real emotion and pain in his words. She took a hesitant step toward him, then stopped as she remembered who he was. Remembered the feel of his arms around her as she was dying. She shook herself mentally.
"It doesn't matter now. You made your choices, and you will die for them."
"And let me guess, you're going to make it as slow and painful as possible," Merlin chuckled mirthlessly, shaking his head as he met her gaze again.
"Oh yes," she said stepping right up to him. She raised her hand to his cheek, slowly raking her fingernails down his face and neck leaving faint red marks in their wake.
Merlin jerked his head away grabbing her wrist. "Morgana…" his eyes searched hers for any sign of the girl he once knew. "Stop this now, please. There has been enough bloodshed and loss."
Morgana stared at him for a moment, obviously disconcerted by the physical contact. Yanking her wrist from his grip she stepped back. With a wave of her hand, two Saxon's entered the cell one of them carrying a large box adorned with symbols of The Old Religion."
"A gift?" Merlin asked with a smirk, "You shouldn't have."
"Oh, I'm not giving…I'm taking," Morgana smiled.
Merlin's eyes grew wide as the box was opened. "Aweax þu meteþearfende! Þicge þu þone drycræft þe þinan deorcan mode gefylþ," Morgana incanted the spell her eyes glowing as a large, black, slug-like creature emerged from the shadowy depths of the box launching itself at Merlin. It attached itself to his face as he struggled desperately trying to get it off. He collapsed on the floor, his chest heaving, his arms falling limp at his sides. The creature finally let go retreating to its box leaving him barely conscious.
Morgana ordered her men from the cell. They closed the box then quickly left taking it with them. Standing over Merlin, she jabbed the toe of her shoe into his ribs and hip. Staring down into his glazed over blue eyes, she almost felt sentimental.
"What the hell was that?" Merlin gasped his voice quivering.
"A creature of the Old Religion…the Gean Canach. It devours magic," Morgana smiled. "You, Emrys, are now powerless."
Merlin got to his feet, clambering away from her, falling against the wall. She followed, a pleased smile on her face. He glared at her, his entire body shaking. He felt empty, his magic was gone. Tears welled in his eyes as he slid down the wall to sit on the cold hard stone floor.
"Why don't you just kill me, Morgana?" he croaked.
"Oh, I will. But first I want you to suffer. Losing your magic is far worse than death, isn't it? To lose who you are."
"Maybe it is," Merlin shook his head slowly as he chuckled. "But so is knowing that I could have saved you if I had only had the courage to tell you the truth," Merlin said, there was no anger in his voice only sorrow.
Morgana stepped across his legs straddling them as she crouched down gripping his chin forcing him to look at her. "You made me into this, Merlin."
"You're right, I did."
"You will suffer without your magic, then you will die."
"At least tell me the truth, what you have done to Arthur?"
"You've lost your magic and still your only concern is for my brother? Why are you so loyal to him? You were the most powerful sorcerer to ever walk the earth and yet you chose to be Arthur's lowly servant. You could have joined me and ruled all of Camelot."
"It is my duty to protect him."
"It was your duty," Morgana smiled.
Merlin shook his head slowly, "Arthur is not dead, I would know."
Morgana leaned closer to Merlin, green eyes blazing. "Don't worry, after I am finished with you Arthur will be the least of your concerns." She looked at him, her gaze falling on his mouth as she smiled. "I must admit I have always wondered what it would be like to kiss you," Morgana said tightening her grip on his chin.
Merlin gave her a muddled look that made Morgana smile. Then she viciously crushed her lips against his in a punishing kiss, biting his bottom lip so hard that she nearly drew blood. She kissed him harder and far longer than she ever intended, feeling herself losing all control. Finally able to pull away, she stared into his eyes expecting to see hatred, pain, disgust. Instead, her breath caught in her throat as she saw something she never imagined…a deep yearning and raw need.
Immediately rising to her feet, she began to back away. Then without a word she turned, practically running from the cell slamming the door closed behind her. Merlin watched her go, then tilted his head back against the wall. He laughed mirthlessly, silently cursing himself for his weakness. Morgana had not just taken his magic; she'd laid bare his tightly guarded feelings for her.
Morgana reached her chambers in a rage. Letting out a cry of frustration, her eyes flashed gold lighting every candle and the fireplace at once. Then with a wave of her hand she threw a chair and a table across the room smashing them against the wall.
Placing her head in her hands, she sat down in front of her dressing mirror. She grabbed her brush then busily began to free her dark hair from the braid. Brushing it until it was smooth and flowing around her shoulders. The act did little to calm her though, as it normally would. Placing the brush in the drawer she got up and changed into her nightdress.
Slipping into bed, Morgana put out the candles the only light coming from the fireplace. Rolling onto her side she stared into the flames. She could still see the look in Merlin's eyes…still feel the warmth and softness of his lips. It had been a mistake. She should never have given him a way in. She hated him with every fiber of her being.
Hours passed and she was still awake…still thinking of the man locked in the dungeon below. Getting out of bed she grabbed a blanket wrapping it around her shoulders. As she stepped out into the corridor, she gave the guards a dismissive look then stormed back down the steps leading to the cells.
Merlin looked up at the window he could see light on the horizon. All but one of the torches had burned out. He hadn't slept, just sat listening to Cedric the rat chewing on something in the darkness.
His body was still in shock though he wasn't sure if it was the loss of his magic or a reaction to Morgana's violent kiss. He had to laugh at himself because as much as his mind had recoiled, his heart and body wanted her. Even after everything that had happened, he still felt inexplicably drawn to her.
Hearing the sound of bare feet on the stone floor, Merlin turned his head to see the cell door open slowly and Morgana standing in the opening.
"Trouble sleeping?" Merlin smirked.
"You did something to me," she said her voice quivering.
"What could I do to you, Morgana? You have taken my magic."
Morgana moved across the floor. "I don't know how, but you did something."
"You're not here to put me out of my misery, so what do you want?"
"I hate you so much."
"Yes, I think that is clear," Merlin huffed.
Morgana dropped the blanket then fell to her knees straddling his thighs. She gripped the front of his tunic shoving him hard against the wall. He looked at her with an amused glint in his eyes.
"Why do you insist on tormenting me?" she asked, her voice far softer than her eyes.
Merlin just grinned, his blue eyes mocking her. Morgana stared at him as she flattened her hands against his chest. She felt his heartbeat, it was beating just as fast as her own.
"I guess I just enjoy the challenge," he said with a smirk.
"You are the most infuriating…" Morgana's voice faltered as she felt Merlin's hand on her thigh. Long, slender fingers moved slowly upward conforming to the shape of her hip, the thin fabric of her nightdress doing nothing to shield her from the heat of his touch. A shiver ran through her body as she saw his eyes transform from mocking to something else entirely.
"Morgana."
"What are you doing?" she asked.
"Choosing my own path," Merlin said huskily. He had never seen Morgana look more beautiful. She wore a lavender silk nightdress that hugged every curve of her body, her long dark hair falling freely about her shoulders. Even her stunning blue-green eyes seemed softer.
"Merlin," Morgana whispered as she moved her hands from his chest to his face.
"You're stunning," Merlin said his fingertips trailing lightly up her sides brushing against the curve of her breasts drawing a breathless cry from her lips. He grinned then ran his thumbs over her hard nipples making her tremble.
"Damn you," Morgana gasped then kissed him hard, her teeth grazing his bottom lip. He kissed her back with the same urgency both hands now on her hips drawing her tightly against him. "Merlin…" she said pulling back to look at his face, her eyes pleading with him to stop. "This cannot happen."
"You should probably get up and walk away then, Merlin said withdrawing his hands from her body.
Morgana wanted to run, but the sudden loss of his touch left her feeling cold and empty. "I can't," she said.
Merlin kissed her fully, their tongues exploring each other's mouths, his hands caressing her delicate throat. His long fingers delving into her dark hair as Morgana moved against him. Sighing she slid her arms around his body beneath his tunic pushing it upward. Merlin reluctantly released her long enough to pull it off over his head.
"Merlin," Morgana whispered as she stared at him.
"Still want to stop?" he asked with a crooked grin.
"Does this answer your question?" Morgana smiled, her green eyes burning with raw desire as she quickly unfastening his trousers. She kissed him hard, hearing him growl low in his throat as her hand closed around his arousal and she began to stroke him. "Unless of course, you want me to stop," she purred against his lips.
"Morgana…" Merlin said his eyes half closing as she pleasured him, "I need you."
"Then you shall have me," Morgana said pulling her nightdress over her head. Pressing her naked body against his, she lowered herself on him. Her eyes closed as she slowly rotated her hips taking him fully inside her. "Oh…Merlin," she panted leaning into his chest his hands sliding slowly down her back to her hips.
"God have mercy," Merlin said his gaze meeting hers as she began to move on him. "If you're going to kill me, this is the way I want to go," he grinned.
"Don't tempt me," Morgana smiled kissing him.
"There are worse ways," Merlin said as his lips closed around her breast his teeth grazing her swollen nipple making her writhe on his lap her head drifting back in ecstasy.
"Merlin," she cried out softly as his lips and tongue awakening her body in ways she had never imagined possible. She felt his fingers brush lightly along her inner thigh. Her green eyes widened as he began to pleasure her mercilessly. She forgot how to speak or breathe properly all she could do was cling to him and pant wildly until she finally shuddered violently. Every muscle in her body convulsed.
"Morgana," Merlin moaned his hips lifting from the floor driving upward into her as he came, his eyes closing tightly, chest heaving. He kissed her, their tongues dueling as their breathing returned to something resembling normal. "You are so beautiful," he said huskily his eyes shining.
"You're still breathing," Morgana said kissing his chest, "Killing you this way may take a few more tries."
Merlin grinned, "So be it."
Morgana slipped off his lap kissing her way down his chest and stomach before taking him in her mouth her lips and tongue quickly bringing him back to full arousal. Merlin grabbed the blanket spreading it out on the floor before laying her back on it. She parted her thighs as he moved between them. She gasped as he thrust into her fully moving slowly at first then faster his lips capturing hers in a kiss that took her breath away.
"Merlin, please… now…" she panted arching her back.
"Patience," he said looking into her eyes.
Morgana placed her hands on his shoulders wrapping her legs around his hips keeping him inside her as her entire body convulsed. Her hands moved lower, her fingers gripping his upper arms. Her head drifted back, Merlin's lips and tongue grazed her delicate throat causing her to cry out in pleasure.
"Morgana," Merlin said his eyes partially closing as she pulled him with her into the abyss. Breathlessly thrusting into her, his body shuddering with release.
"Merlin," Morgana gasped as she clung to him. He rolled onto his side drawing the blanket around her for warmth then kissed her passionately. Unable to form words, she just stared into his ocean blue eyes and surrendered to the moment even as she knew it wouldn't last. Merlin felt it too. A looming darkness that could only be fate working to take away what they had just found in each other. He pulled her closer, their bodies fitting perfectly together.
Merlin awoke to an empty cell. He sat up looking around. Morgana was gone. The only sign that she had been there was the blanket. He rubbed his eyes shaking his head trying to focus. She had gone without a word…was she regretting what happened between them? Would he regret it?
Placing his head in his hands he struggled with all of it. Was Arthur dead or had she lied to him? His magic was gone. After everything that Morgana had done, he'd still given in to his long-buried feelings for her. Had she just used him? Did he even care? He smiled to himself. No, he could not regret what happened.
Reaching for his discarded clothing Merlin got dressed. Whatever the future held if he even had one, it felt good to have finally taken his own path rather than the one his destiny planned out for him. Right or wrong he and Morgana had shared something intense and tangible.
Morgana woke in her bed, she barely remembered returning to her chambers. Her emotions were a jumbled mess. She hated herself for giving in to her desires. She hated Merlin for making her want him. The one person she had spent years building walls to keep out, she had let in. She had allowed herself to feel again.
"Merlin," Morgana said on a breath her fingers touching her lips where his mouth had been. She couldn't stop thinking about his hands on her body, the way they moved together. Fighting the urge to touch herself she got out of bed and washed. Putting on her black lace frock she quickly braided her hair again as she remembered the way his long slender fingers…
A loud knock on the door startled her, "Lady Morgana."
"What?" she asked opening the door hoping the guards would not notice her flushed skin and wild eyes.
"We have received word from the outriders, My Lady. Arthur and his knights have been scouring the kingdom searching for the prisoner."
Morgana nodded slowly. "Good…keep me informed."
"Yes, My Lady," the Saxon said bowing to her.
Alone again, Morgana sat down on her bed. Taking a deep breath, she tilted her head back, her eyes brimming with tears. When she had asked Arthur to decide what meant more to him Camelot or Merlin, she never imagined she would be faced with the same dilemma. Was her desire for revenge and to rule Camelot stronger than her newly realized feelings for Merlin?
Merlin heard the guards talking in the corridor. He couldn't make out everything they were saying, but he definitely heard army and attack on Camelot. His heart sank as reality set in. Morgana had used him. She was planning to take Camelot. He prayed that Arthur was still alive and searching for him. There was no way to escape this cell without his magic.
It had been two days since Morgana came to him. Running his fingers through his hair, he bit his bottom lip. He could still see the look in her eyes. It had not been a lie. What they had shared was very real.
Holding his hand up toward the window, Merlin tried to reach his magic to see if anything would happen. Nothing. Frustrated he got up off the floor and paced the cell. He needed a bath and a shave and a change of clothes badly.
Turning toward the cell door as he heard footsteps, Merlin hoped it would be Morgana, but it was only a guard. He opened the door just enough to shove a tray of food and a waterskin through the opening before locking it again. Crossing the cell, he sat down on the floor next to the door to eat while listening for any other useful bits of information from the guards.
The food was actually quite good. Half of a roasted chicken, a bowl of soup, berries and two apples. It could have been poisoned, but he didn't care. He was hungry and thirsty. He finished the food then put the second apple into his pocket for later. After taking a drink of the water he moved toward the window. He was in an unfamiliar castle, but he recognized the White Mountains in the distance. He was at least a day and a half walk from Camelot as far as he could tell.
"Arthur, where are you?" Merlin asked as he sat down on the floor leaning back against the wall, "Please, be alive."
"Arthur, what are we going to do? Morgana has him." Gwen said tears in her eyes. She couldn't bear to think about what Merlin was going through. "You and the knights have been searching for days, there is no sign of him anywhere."
"Which is why I have decided to go out on my own. Guinevere, I will find him. I swear I will bring him home."
"Arthur," Gaius said his face etched with worry, "Morgana knows Merlin is Emrys, she will kill him if she hasn't already."
"Gaius, I have to believe that he is alive and so should you. We cannot give up hope," Arthur said as he packed his leather bag. "I am going to save him or die trying. I owe him that much."
"I know you need to go, but you should not go alone," Gwen said.
"Morgana expects me to decide what means more to Camelot or Merlin. I love Camelot more than I can say, but it is Merlin I must save. I have to trust that the kingdom will survive without me." Arthur kissed Gwen then placed the royal seal into her hand. "If I should not return..."
"Arthur no, I cannot do this alone," Gwen said.
"There is no one else I would rather have succeed me. I am so proud of you, my love. You are wise, strong and you are loved by the people. I believe in you."
Gwen nodded pushing down the panic rising in her chest. "All right," she said softly, "Please, be careful."
"I love you," Arthur said kissing her deeply.
"I love you too."
Arthur looked at Gaius with a nod then left the room with his bag over his shoulder.
"Gaius, I can't lose him," Gwen said stepping into the open arms of the physician.
"Arthur will return, and he will bring Merlin home. We must have faith."
Arthur left Camelot behind riding alone dressed only in black trousers and a blue shirt with a leather vest. He felt naked without his armor, but he wanted to be as inconspicuous as possible. He had to find out where Morgana had taken Merlin and being seen in full armor would not be well received by the people he had to talk to for answers.
Everything in him said that Merlin was still alive, and he would hold on to that hope until proven otherwise. He owed it to Merlin to not give up on him. Morgana would not win…not this time.
Morgana watched Merlin in his cell. She knew him well enough to realize he was putting the pieces together. He knew her plans. Shaking her head, she forced the memories into the dark recesses of her mind. She could not allow herself to give in. What happened between them could never happen again.
The problem was all she could think about was the absolute peace and contentment she felt just being in his arms. The feel of his hands on her body, his lips on her skin. Her face flushed as her lips parted in a smile. Staying away from him for the past two days was only making her need stronger. Fighting the urge to go to him, she retreated down the corridor.
"Lady Morgana."
Morgana rolled her eyes in annoyance then turned to face the hulking form of Gavard, the leader of the Saxon army, and three guards.
"Lady Morgana," he bowed then motioned to the guards ordering them to take their places outside Merlin's cell.
"What is it, Gavard," she asked dismissively. She really did not want to discuss war tactics at the moment.
"My Lady, it did not escape my attention that you laid with the prisoner."
"That, Gavard, is not your concern."
"I'm afraid it is, My Lady. You have been compromised by the sorcerer."
"Compromised," she laughed her eyes shimmering with gold, "I am a High Priestess of the Old Religion. Now that Emrys no longer has his powers, I am more powerful than any other being on earth. I merely used him for my own pleasure. I will kill him when I have had my fun."
"You will kill him now," Gavard said flatly.
"You do not tell me what to do."
"You kill him, or I will."
"Gavard, have you forgotten what I did to the last man who challenged me," Morgana hissed. "I will deal with Emrys in my own way and in my own time. Challenge me again and you will experience firsthand the punishment known as Ragaid."
Fear flashed in Gavard's eyes. "Yes, My Lady…if you'll forgive my boldness."
"Good, now go do what you are supposed to be doing…preparing the army."
Morgana watched until he was out of sight then hurried to her chambers. Slamming the door shut, she locked it behind her. Falling back against the wall she let out a ragged breath. Gavard's threat to kill Merlin shook her to the core. Just the thought of him being killed pierced her heart. How had he suddenly become the most important thing in her life?
Merlin fell asleep his head on the folded blanket that still smelled of her. The sun had gone down, he wondered when the army would be leaving for Camelot. He looked toward the cell door as it opened. The three guards entered followed by a huge man that made Percival seem small.
"Gentlemen," Merlin smiled as he got to his feet.
"The name is Gavard, sorcerer," Gavard smiled then turned to the others, "Kill him."
Merlin stepped back looking around for a way out, but he was trapped. The next thing he knew he was being pummeled mercilessly by all three guards. When he was on the floor bleeding, Gavard stepped forward drawing his sword. Merlin saw the sword and his heart stopped…Arthur's sword.
"Arthur," he gasped as he struggled to remain conscious. Arthur would never part with that sword unless he was dead. Merlin's eye stung. He lunged forward throwing his full weight into Gavard. Anger surged in him.
Caught off guard the giant lost his grip on the sword dropping it. Merlin wrapped his hand around the hilt and with every ounce of strength he had he sliced upward. Gavard let out a shocked cry as the blade opened him up from navel to breastbone. He fell over dead.
One of the other guards lashed out at Merlin with a dagger catching him across his upper chest and shoulder. Swinging the sword around Merlin slashed the guard's throat and he dropped to the floor on top of Gavard. The other two guards took one look at the unbridled fury in the sorcerer's eyes and ran. Merlin stumbled toward the open cell door. He heard the sound of more guards approaching and moved toward the steps leading up one level. He reached the top then ducked into an alcove behind a statue of a Lion. Wincing in pain, Merlin looked at the wound, it wasn't deep, but it was bleeding profusely.
Peering around the corner, seeing no one Merlin slipped down the corridor. He was about to make a run for the next alcove when the door opened to one of the rooms and Morgana stepped out.
"Merlin!" she exclaimed, "What happened?"
"You—You sent them to kill me," Merlin glared at her, his eyes blistering.
"No…you have to believe me, I didn't. Quickly, come into my chambers before the guards return," she pleaded.
"Is Arthur dead?"
"Merlin, they are coming," Morgana said.
"Answer me," he demanded even as he struggled to keep from passing out.
"I left Arthur alive, and I took his sword," she relented, "Now let me help you.
Merlin leaned back against the wall, glancing down the corridor. Guards could be heard approaching from both directions. Morgana saw his eyes partially close rushing to his side as he fell against her. She pulled him into her chambers shutting and locking the door just as the guards rushed past.
"Merlin, you're bleeding," she gasped as she lifted his tunic.
"It's just a knife wound…not deep," Merlin winced, his breathing labored.
A pounding on the door startled them both. She helped Merlin move out of sight behind her bed before going to the door.
"What is it?" she snapped.
"Lady Morgana, the prisoner has escaped. Gavard and Hegel are both dead."
"Well, find him and kill him!" Morgana screamed, slamming the door shut.
"That was very convincing," Merlin chuckled when she dropped to her knees next to him.
"Shut up and hold still," Morgana said, "How did you manage to kill Gavard and Hegel without your magic?"
"Arthur's sword and a whole lot of pent-up rage. Merlin grimaced as Morgana felt along his rib cage. "I think I have broken ribs."
"I'm sorry…I should have protected you," she said softly.
"You were the one who wanted me dead," he grinned.
"Yes, well…things changed," Morgana said pressing lower on his side making him flinch. "I don't think they are broken, definitely bruised. I need to stop the bleeding."
"Morgana," Merlin said meeting her gaze.
"Not now, Merlin…" she said her expression serious until she saw the crooked grin on his face then she rolled her eyes and laughed. "Shut up."
"What about the army?"
"I'm afraid Gavard undermined my authority over them."
"Morgana, this has to stop. We cannot let Camelot fall to the Saxons. I understand why you felt you had to fight back against Uther. I really do. But war…please, this has to stop."
"I can't stop it," she said an apprehensive look in her eyes that Merlin had never seen before. "Merlin, the army they aren't just men, there are shapeshifting demons among them."
"The thing that grabbed me," Merlin said tilting his head back as he released a breath sending sharp pains through his ribs.
"I used dark magic to conjure them, but now I cannot control them. My powers are not strong enough…not without help."
"And thanks to your pet slug, I have lost mine."
"I'm sorry. If I knew how to restore it I would."
Merlin looked at Morgana with a raised eyebrow then grinned.
"Will you stop looking at me like that?"
"Like what?"
"Like that…so pleased with yourself."
"I would rather please you," he said huskily his eyes teasing her.
"You can barely stand up much less do anything else," Morgana said leaning closer, her lips so close to his she could feel his warm breath.
"You did promise to kill me," Merlin grinned then shifted his position letting out a groan of pain.
"Yes, and I am the only one allowed to kill you, so we need to get you out of here before the guards figure out where you are."
"You're coming with me."
"Merlin…"
"Morgana, I cannot lose you again. Please, come with me."
Morgana looked at him thoughtfully then nodded. "I'll go with you."
"I need to get my magic back, that is our best chance."
"How?"
"The Crystal Cave in the Valley of the Fallen Kings. It's the birthplace of magic…" Merlin said as he attempted to get up, but she pushed him back down to the floor.
"You won't make it that far if I can't stop this bleeding. Now, hold still," she said then splaying her hand over his wound she incanted a healing spell.
"Ow…" he cringed, reflexively kicking his foot out against the side of her bed.
Morgana helped him to his feet partially supporting his weight. "It's a long journey to the Valley of the Fallen Kings from here. Can you even walk?"
"Just get me outside and I'll take it from there," Merlin said putting his arm over her shoulders.
"Come on then," she said as they moved to the door, opening it slowly.
Merlin kept Arthur's sword at the ready as he leaned on her. They left the room then rounded a corner running right into two guards which Morgana sent flying into the walls before they could even utter a word of warning.
"This way," Morgana said taking Merlin down the steps and into a narrow tunnel that led to a locked gate. She opened it with a wave of her hand, then they were outside. The darkness enveloped them. "You need to rest, let me check your wound again," she said guiding him to an area hidden from the castle by a wall and trees.
Merlin looked at her as he sat down on part of a broken wall. "Morgana, why are you really doing this…helping me?"
Morgana shook her head releasing a breath into the chilly night air. "I wish I knew the answer to that question," she said as she knelt down in front of him to check his wound. "The bleeding has completely stopped," she said. As she started to draw her hand back, Merlin covered her hand with his own holding it against his chest.
"I want you to know that what happened between us…"
"Merlin, don't…"
"Morgana, whatever it meant for you, for me it was real."
"Damn you, Merlin…" she said softly, a tear sliding down her cheek as she leaned into his chest pressing her lips to his.
"We should get moving," he said grinning, and she nodded rising to her feet. He stood putting his arm around her. "Is there a clearing nearby?"
"This way," she said guiding him through the darkness until they emerged into a small meadow. "Will this do?"
"Yes," Merlin nodded.
"What are you going to do? You don't have your magic."
"No, but I am still a Dragonlord," he said with a smirk.
Morgana's eyes grew wide as she laughed softly, "Of course you are." She stepped back and watched as he looked up to the sky. His mouth opened and from deep within his soul a guttural roar reverberated through the night.
"O drakon, e male so ftengometta tesd'hup'anankes!" Merlin called out and waited. Hoping that his powers would still work without his magic.
"Merlin," Morgana said staring at him, her eyes shining. "That was…"
"What?" he asked.
"Let's just say if you weren't injured right now…"
Merlin looked at her with a raised eyebrow and a knowing grin.
"Shut up, Merlin."
Listening intently, Merlin prayed for the sound of giant wings to shatter the calm of the night air. Just as he was beginning to think he'd failed he heard them. Grinning he turned to Morgana, "Let me talk to him. He may not be so keen to help."
"I take it he is not my biggest fan," she smiled.
Merlin nodded, "You could say that."
Kilgharrah circled overhead before landing in front of them. "What is she doing here, Young Warlock?" he asked with obvious indignation.
"Morgana is with me; she just saved my life."
"And yet your life would not have been in danger if not for her."
Merlin reached out taking hold of Morgana's hand. "We need to get to the Crystal Cave in the Valley of the Fallen Kings. I must restore my magic if we are to save Camelot from the army of demons and Saxons."
"I will take you, but not the Witch," Kilgharrah said his eyes glaring daggers at her.
"Kilgharrah, please do not make me command you."
"Once again you would abuse your powers as a Dragonlord for her. Did you not learn your lesson the first time?"
Merlin shook his head, "I would rather not do so."
"If you had let her die none of this would have happened."
Morgana looked at Merlin probingly. "What is he talking about?" she asked.
"Merlin came to me when you were dying and commanded me to give him a spell to heal you. He abused his powers to save your life," Kilgharrah said, "I told him to let you die…to prevent the evil that would come."
Morgana stepped forward looking up at Kilgharrah. "Then kill me!" she said calmly, "End the evil now."
"Morgana, no…" Merlin said reaching to pull her back, but she shook her head and pushed his hand away.
"Kilgharrah…you have the power to end my life do you not?"
"That I do, Witch!"
"Then do it," she said eyes open wide.
Kilgharrah looked at her, surprise registering in his golden gaze. He studied her closely, lowering his head his hot breath lifting her dark hair from her shoulders. "There was a time when I would have gladly done so, Morgana Pendragon."
"Why not now?" she demanded.
Kilgharrah lifted his head his eyes shining even brighter. "Because it now appears that your destinies are permanently intertwined."
"What do you mean?" Merlin asked stepping forward taking her hand in his.
"That is not for me to reveal, Young Warlock. Some paths must be traveled purely on faith…not prophecy."
"Riddles again, Kilgharrah?"
"I will take you both to the Valley of the Fallen Kings," Kilgharrah said lowering his head to the ground.
Merlin climbed up first then helped Morgana. She sat behind him wrapping her arms tightly around his waist. Her eyes grew wide as Kilgharrah lifted into the air skimming the tops of the trees as he seemed to aim for the moon.
"Are you all right," Merlin asked looking back at her.
Morgana nodded as she could not find her voice. Emotions overwhelmed her. She pressed her forehead to the back of his shoulder fighting tears as she suddenly realized the truth. All this time she had been hating Merlin for not helping her, when in reality he was the only one who ever tried…the only one who ever cared to try.
Kilgharrah swooped toward the ground landing in a clearing at the entrance to the Valley of the Fallen Kings. Merlin quickly slid to the ground then helped Morgana down before looking up at the dragon.
"Thank you," Merlin said with a slight bow.
"Do not make me regret this, Witch. For now, it is not only your lives that hang in the balance, but also those whose futures depend on the both of you."
"I won't I swear," Morgana said softly.
Merlin looked at him sensing that there was something more in the dragon's words, but he let it go, "We have to get to the Crystal Cave."
"Are you doing all right?" Morgana asked.
"I'm fine…come on this way," Merlin said.
Kilgharrah launched into the air as Morgana put her arm around Merlin helping him down the steep slope to the trail leading to the cave. They reached the entrance and Merlin found a torch which Morgana promptly lit.
Making their way into the cave, Morgana studied Merlin. She could tell he was struggling and in pain. Looking at him, with the light of the torch reflecting in his eyes, her breath caught in her throat. How had she never noticed how handsome he was…no not handsome…beautiful. His vivid blue eyes, chiseled cheekbones, and impossibly full lips that made her blush as she remembered how they felt on her bare skin.
"Morgana?"
"What?" she asked.
"Are you all right?"
"Yes. Keep going," she urged.
They came into the light finding themselves standing amongst the glowing crystals. Morgana gasped, a smile of childlike wonder on her face. She had heard the stories, but never imagined such beauty existed in the world.
"Merlin, it is breathtaking," she said softly, then turned to find him staring at her.
Merlin nodded then moved to stand in the center of the crystals. He felt the magic in the air around him as it brushed against his skin like the delicate wings of butterflies. He smiled, closing his eyes.
"Come here," Merlin said holding his hands out to her.
"I don't think that is a good idea."
"Morgana, you trusted me once."
And she still did, Morgana realized as she reached out placing her hands in his. She instantly felt it…the magic. Its pure warmth made her laugh breathlessly as it wrapped them both in a silvery light.
"Morgana," Merlin whispered meeting her gaze, the light swirled and danced in the air moving gracefully around their joined hands.
A moment later, Merlin dropped to his knees then laid back on the ground. Morgana knelt beside him. "What's happening?" she asked, suddenly panicked. She felt helpless as he slipped into unconsciousness.
Pressing her ear to his chest she heard his heartbeat; it was strong and steady. Curling her body against him she kept her head on his chest and closed her eyes for just a moment.
"Morgana," Merlin said brushing her hair back from her face as she stirred. "Wake up. It's done."
"Your magic?"
"It's back.
"You have no idea how much I regret taking it from you."
"It doesn't matter now," Merlin said he lowered his head kissing her deeply as her hands slid upward along his chest to his neck. She stopped as she remembered his wounds. "They are all healed, I'm good as new."
"All healed," Morgana smiled against his lips then pushed his jacket off his shoulders. He tossed it aside as she drew his tunic up over his head. Merlin looked into her eyes the pure emotion…the desire he saw in them took his breath away.
"Morgana," he whispered huskily as his lips captured hers again. His hands moved over her body causing her to moan. Arching her back she silently pleaded with him to hurry. She needed to feel him…all of him against her body.
Merlin stopped to stare at her in the silver light of the crystals, she was stunning. Her dress fell away her porcelain skin taking on an ethereal glow. He slipped his arms around her, his lips and tongue devouring her breasts. He let out a ragged breath as her hand closed around him.
"I need you now, Merlin," she said her voice quivering.
Merlin kissed her, sucking gently on her bottom lip his hand moving upward along her inner thigh. "Morgana, you take my breath away."
"Will you do your dragon call for me?" Morgana asked smiling.
"Somehow I don't think Kilgharrah would appreciate that," Merlin grinned.
"Damn dragon anyway," Morgana said kissing him again. Her eyes widened a soft gasp escaping her lips as her hips rose to meet his. She kissed his mouth her hands moving over his back and shoulders. She needed him like she needed air to breathe, a realization that both terrified and thrilled her.
"Merlin…" she whispered pressing her lips to his shoulder their bodies moving together with increasing intensity driving them both toward release. Morgana cried out breathlessly sparks of gold bursting in her eyes.
Merlin lifted her up from the ground holding her tightly against him as her body shuddered. Every tremor coursing through her drove him closer to the edge. He kissed her his tongue and teeth grazing her full lips. His hands moved from her back to her hips holding her still as he resisted his own release.
Catching her breath, Morgana smiled, a mischievous glint in her eyes. She kissed him hard, playfully biting his bottom lip. Merlin grinned his head drifting back in surrender as she easily pushed him over the threshold. He chuckled breathlessly pressing his forehead against hers, his heart racing.
Holding each other close they looked up at the crystals above them.
"The sun will be up soon, if it isn't already." Merlin said.
"Can we just stay here like this?"
"I wish, but we have a kingdom to save."
"Merlin," Morgana said her fingertip tracing his cheekbone. "What do you think the dragon meant by what he said about us?"
"Kilgharrah is frustratingly cryptic, always talking in riddles. Getting a straight answer out of him is nearly impossible."
"I really thought he would kill me."
"I wouldn't have allowed that."
"Why not?" Morgana asked, "I deserve to die for what I have done."
"Then so do I."
Morgana looked at him shaking her head. "What could you possibly have done that would warrant you dying?"
Merlin grinned, "Asks the woman who only a few days ago wanted me drawn and quartered."
Morgana sat up slowly a slight shiver going through her body. Merlin reached for his jacket wrapping her in it. Gently smoothing her dark hair back from her face, he kissed her. She smiled sadly looking into his eyes as she drew back from the kiss.
"Are you all right?" he asked.
"Merlin, where do I even begin to ask for forgiveness? Arthur…Gwen…you?"
"Morgana, Arthur and Gwen…I know they still care for you. It will take time and it won't be easy, but I believe they will forgive."
"And you?"
Merlin shook his head slightly, "For me it isn't whether or not I can forgive. While your actions were wrong…horribly wrong, deep down I understood the reason behind them. And I also know that I am at least partially to blame."
"Why did you save my life back then when you knew what I was to become?"
"Partially because I couldn't bear to watch everyone's grief," Merlin said, "But also because I still remembered the girl who took my breath away the first time I saw her."
"I am not her anymore, Merlin. I haven't been her for an awfully long time," Morgana said eyes glistening with tears.
"Morgana, if that were true would you be here with me right now?"
She looked at him thoughtfully, "No, probably not."
"Come on, we have to get going," Merlin said.
They had dressed and were ready to leave when Morgana heard something. She turned to see a large crystal begin to glow brighter than the others. It seemed to be calling to her. Reaching out hesitantly her fingertips brushed against the sharp edges and instantly she felt heat flowing through her. She jerked her hand away stumbling back into Merlin's arms.
"Merlin," Morgana said her eyes growing wide.
"Let's get out of here," Merlin said.
Morgana cried out in pain as the heat intensified and her knees buckled. "I can't. Merlin, please leave me…run," she pleaded as she felt a wave of power rising up in her. "I can't stop it."
"I won't leave you, Morgana. We have to get outside," Merlin scooped her up in his arms making his way quickly toward the cave entrance.
Morgana clung to him as she began to shake violently. "Put me down, Merlin…let me down now!"
Merlin sat her down on her feet but stayed by her side. "What's happening?"
"It's the crystals…I don't know," Morgana said as she sank to her knees and Merlin dropped next to her. "Something is happening."
"Morgana," Merlin said cupping her face as her eyes closed.
The ground trembled beneath them as rocks began to fall from the top of the cave and a large crack spread across the ceiling. Merlin shielded Morgana with his body. Holding up his hand his eyes glowing gold he put up a magic shield around them. Then a sudden wave of power surged from within Morgana throwing him backward against the cave wall knocking him unconscious.
Morgana opened her eyes arching her back as the magic coursed through her body seeping into every pore…every blood vessel her heart pounding so hard she thought she was dying. Pushing herself up on her elbows she struggled to pull herself further away from Merlin to protect him. She screamed his name as everything came crashing down around her.
"Merlin…I'm sorry…" she cried out as everything went black.
Arthur made his way along the steep trail leading his horse. He knew the Valley of the Fallen Kings was the last place he should be, but something had drawn him there. A dream during the night, a feeling in his gut. Merlin was alive and he was close.
Just as he reached the bottom of the ravine, Arthur heard a sound on the ridge above. He drew his sword tethering his horse in a grove of trees and waited. The bandits emerged from the woods charging him.
Arthur killed three of them and injured two more before they managed to restrain him. A very tall, incredibly beautiful blonde woman dressed in trousers and fur trimmed leather vest approached him. The belt around her narrow waist held a sword and two daggers.
"Who are you?" Arthur asked.
"My name is Ingrid," she smiled as she approached him. "Who are you?"
"My name is Gwaine, I'm just traveling through."
"Gwaine? Well, aren't you a brave one? Taking on my men all alone."
"Yes," Arthur replied hoping she would buy the story.
"Remarkable," Ingrid smiled as she stood in front of him, "Has anyone ever told you that you bear a striking resemblance to Arthur Pendragon the King of Camelot?"
"Actually yes, I have heard that before," Arthur grinned meeting her gaze.
Ingrid waved her hand and the men let go of Arthur. "You're a long way from home, Arthur and it's dangerous out here for a wayward king. Whatever you are after it must be important for you to risk so much."
"I am looking for someone."
"Who is it you seek?"
"Emrys…" Arthur said.
Ingrid's blue eyes lit up. "Why would the King of Camelot be searching for a powerful sorcerer in the Valley of the Fallen Kings?"
"Do you know where he is?" Arthur asked.
"If I did why would I tell you?"
"Because I will make it worth your while. I will pay you."
Ingrid smiled getting right in Arthur's face, "You are just as handsome and brave as they say…and just as foolish."
"Please, I must find him. His life is in danger."
"It is your life that hangs in the balance, Arthur Pendragon. I am certain your queen will pay handsomely for your return."
"Let me go and I will make sure you are rewarded."
"You really must think I am stupid," Ingrid said.
Arthur shook his head, "It's not gold I care about. All I want is to find Emrys before it is too late."
"Fascinating…you, the son of Uther, willing to take such measures for a sorcerer. What is he to you?"
"He is my friend…he is like a brother to me. He has saved my life more times than I can possibly say, and I owe it to him to save his."
Ingrid's expression changed dramatically with Arthur's words. She looked at her men. "Move out. Leave us." The men vanished into the woods as if they had never been there.
Arthur sheathed his sword standing calmly with his back straight as Ingrid turned to look at him. "Do you know where Emrys is?" he asked.
"So, the legends are true," Ingrid said softly, "You are him…the Once and Future King…"
"Apparently so…" Arthur said.
"Then you can keep your gold. Just promise me that you will bring about the world we all dream of, and I will let you go."
"I promise, but I cannot do so without Emrys."
"Go to the Crystal Cave there was magic emanating from within its depths last night that could only have come from a sorcerer of his power."
"Thank you, Ingrid," Arthur said.
Ingrid leaned closer, placing her hand on his cheek. She kissed him long and hard then with a smile and a wink she walked away leaving him a bit stunned.
Arthur reached for the reins of his horse climbing into the saddle. With a quick glance up the ridge, he saw Ingrid look back at him. With a nod he urged his horse into a gallop.
"That was unexpected," he said with a grin.
Arthur remembered the general area where the Crystal Cave was based on what he could recall about where he was shot in the back with the arrow. Merlin told him Taliesin had taken him to the cave on foot, so it had to be in the vicinity.
Getting off his horse as the terrain grew steeper and rockier, he decided to tether the mare and go the rest of the way on foot.
Arthur moved quickly through a narrow gorge and up a steep ravine before dropping down into another shallower ravine. He stopped as he heard something. Listening intently, he heard it again…a low rumbling. It grew louder until it shook the ground beneath his feet and birds launched skyward from the surrounding trees.
"What the hell?"
Moving faster, Arthur skidded down a steep slope and found himself standing at the entrance of the cave just as the whole thing caved in.
"Merlin!" Arthur shouted his eyes wide with fear.
Morgana opened her eyes looking around. She was alive. She moved her arms and legs lifting her head. As the memory of what happened came rushing back, she gasped. Pulling herself up on a large rock she cried out in pain. There was a large gash on her left calf. "Merlin!" she screamed. Hearing nothing, she panicked her heart racing. She had to find him. "Merlin, where are you?"
Trying to get her bearings, Morgana limped toward where the cave entrance had been. It was completely caved in. "No," she said, reaching her hands out trying to focus her magic but it was not cooperating. She turned back and spotted the brown of his jacket.
"Merlin!" Morgana yelled moving rocks away from his still form. She dropped to her knees beside him. He was unconscious and his head was bleeding badly. She pressed her ear to his chest relieved to hear his heart beating. "Merlin, please wake up. Something is wrong with my magic."
Turning toward the entrance, Morgana thought she heard something. "Hello?" she cried out. "Please, we need help."
Arthur pulled rocks away from the entrance. He considered going back to get his horse, but he wasn't sure how long he had before the whole place collapsed. He knew Merlin was in there and he had to get him out.
"What happened?" Ingrid shouted as she and her men appeared on the ridge about Arthur.
"I need help, please," Arthur said.
Ingrid nodded and motioned to the men to help. It wasn't long before they had made an opening. Arthur squeezed through as one of the men passed him a lit torch.
"Merlin!" Arthur shouted, "Merlin, can you hear me?"
"Arthur," a voice answered back that was not Merlin's, but he knew it all too well.
"Morgana?"
"Arthur, thank God…help. Merlin is hurt," Morgana pleaded.
"What the hell?" Arthur asked.
"I'll explain everything later…just help me."
Arthur jammed the end of the torch into a crevasse then dropped down next to Merlin eyeing Morgana warily while checking his friend's injuries. He had a hundred questions going through his mind, but Merlin was the priority. "Morgana, I need you to go out there and tell Ingrid to send in one of her men to help me carry Merlin outside before this whole place comes down on us. I don't want to jostle him too much in case he has a back or neck injury."
"All right," Morgana nodded then pressing her lips to Merlin's she wiped away tears. With a glance at Arthur, she got up and carefully limped toward the entrance.
Arthur shook his head, baffled by what he had just witnessed. Morgana kissed Merlin and she was crying. "Merlin," Arthur said gingerly touching his friend's chest. "Stay with me, all right."
It took a while, but with the help of two of Ingrid's men they managed to get Merlin out of the cave. They placed him on a bed of folded blankets and set up camp around him. By the time darkness fell there was a roaring fire going and the bandits were gathered around it skinning rabbits and chatting.
Arthur sat quietly watching Morgana as she tenderly stroked Merlin's forehead and spoke softly to him. If it were not for her black dress and wild hair, he could almost believe she was the sweet compassionate girl he grew up with. Shaking his head, he struggled to grasp the idea of the two of them together. Merlin had mentioned that he harbored feelings for Morgana, but to know that his sister felt the same was unfathomable.
"You can stop looking at me like that," Morgana said.
"Like what?" Arthur asked.
"Like that," she responded with an almost playful glare.
"Morgana," Ingrid said as she approached, "Your dress is ruined. I thought you might like a change of clothes."
"Thank you, Ingrid," Morgana smiled gratefully.
"You are very welcome. You can use my tent to change and there is water and soap in there as well if you would like to clean up."
"You are too kind," Morgana said lowering her gaze.
"It's the least I can do," Ingrid smiled at Arthur then walked toward her men who were skinning a deer for supper.
"Morgana," Arthur said softly, "I will watch Merlin. Go on and get cleaned up and change."
Morgana looked at him, her eyes brimming with tears. "Arthur…I," she began but her voice failed her.
Arthur got up, moving toward his sister, before he could think about what he was doing. He helped her to her feet and when she looked up at him, she burst into tears. He gathered her into his arms holding her close his hand cupping the back of her head as she sobbed into his shirt.
"I've got you, Morgana," Arthur whispered kissing the top of her head as he struggled to believe this weeping girl was the same woman who had spent years trying to kill him and take Camelot.
"Arthur, I'm sorry," Morgana gasped clinging to her brother.
Arthur just held her and let her weep. Whatever had happened, he had his sister back. The woman she had been was gone. And despite everything he found himself smiling through his own tears. "Shh, everything is going to be all right," Arthur said.
Morgana finally managed to collect herself and drew back from him her eyes red and swollen. "I didn't mean to…"
Arthur touched her cheek. "I think you needed that," he smiled.
"How are you…after all I did…how can you?" she struggled to find words.
"Why don't you take the clothes Ingrid brought, go clean up and change then we will talk. All right?"
Morgana nodded a small smile on her face that reached her eyes. She gathered up the clothes and walked off in the direction of Ingrid's tent. Arthur watched her go shaking his head. He looked down at Merlin.
"You worked another miracle, my friend," Arthur said softly as he crouched next to him and checked his wounds. "Come on, Merlin…wake up. You need to explain all this to me before I lose my mind."
Morgana returned an hour later, looking far more put together and at ease. She said down on the ground next to Merlin wearing trousers like Ingrid's and a soft leather tunic with laces down the front and a soft fur collar.
"Better?" Arthur asked.
"Much," Morgana smiled sheepishly, "I'm sorry I fell apart like that. It just felt so good to hear your voice again…like when we were young. I know I have no right to expect anything but thank you for what you did. Truly, thank you."
"Morgana," Arthur said,
"Yes?"
"That was far more than just falling apart wasn't it. Something happened."
Morgana looked longingly at Merlin, "We came here to restore Merlin's magic. I'm not certain, but I think the crystals in the cave reacted to the darkness inside me. They somehow purified me."
"What do you mean purify?" Arthur asked.
"The darkness is gone, Arthur. I feel like I have been given a second chance."
Arthur looked at her thoughtfully, "That would explain what happened earlier. But what about you and Merlin. Something must have happened between you two before coming to the cave."
"Merlin showed me the way out and I took it. I told you this was a game to see what mattered more to you, but the game was turned on me," Morgana laughed softly tears glistening in her green eyes again.
"You chose Merlin," Arthur smiled.
Morgana nodded meeting her brother's gaze then turned to look at Merlin. "For the longest time I blamed Merlin for what I became. Now I realize that he was the only person willing to fight his way through the darkness to find me again."
"I'm sorry, I wasn't there for you, Morgana. I am sorry I allowed our father's hatred and fear to drive a wedge between us."
"Arthur, I regret everything I have done. I know I don't have any right to ask for forgiveness. But I want you to know that things are different now."
"I can see that," Arthur smiled tenderly, "We can work on the forgiveness. But I want you to know that I never stopped loving you."
"How can you say that after what I did?"
"It's true, Morgana. I held out hope that somehow, someday you would return to me and here you are."
"You mean that?"
"Yes," Arthur grinned.
Morgana lowered her gaze for a moment then looked at Arthur again. The Saxon army will reach Camelot in two days. They are accompanied by hundreds of shapeshifting demons that I conjured using dark magic. Merlin and I can stop the demons together, but the army will still be a challenge."
Arthur nodded, "Are you certain you can stop them? Merlin is still unconscious, and you said your magic is not cooperating."
"I can feel my magic beginning to come back into me. I would like to try to heal Merlin if you will allow me to."
Arthur nodded, "Yes of course…help him if you can."
"You've changed too, haven't you," Morgana said.
"I have. I can now see that magic itself is not evil and it can be used as a force for good. Merlin taught me that."
"You truly care for Merlin. He's not just your servant anymore, is he?"
Arthur chuckled, "I don't think Merlin was ever just my servant. It took me awhile to realize that." Arthur smiled. "He's my best friend."
"I admit I was always jealous of the bond you two shared," Morgana smiled.
"You were?"
Morgana nodded, "Even though he was just a servant…I was always drawn to him."
"Merlin told me he felt the same way about you."
"He did?" Morgana asked.
"Yes."
"I never realized…"
"I have to admit I had my suspicions when I kept catching him bringing you flowers and leaving your chambers at odd times."
Morgana laughed, "Nothing happened between us. He was just…sweet…he cared about me. He tried to help when I realized I had magic, but I was so scared of Uther. Things seemed so out of my control back then. My nightmares were coming true, and I didn't understand what was happening to me."
"I remember you tried to warn me about Sophia, and I didn't listen. I thought you were just jealous," Arthur grinned.
"Morgause told me that you could never love me," Morgana said.
"Morgause was manipulating you just as she tried to do to me. Using my mother and the truth about my birth to get me to kill my father and destroy the kingdom."
"Your birth?" Morgana asked.
"Uther used magic. He went to Nimueh to conceive a child with my mother. The price of a life…"
"Is a life…" Morgana finished.
"So, for me to be born my mother was sacrificed."
Morgana looked at him in shock, "I didn't know that."
"Father wouldn't let me tell you or anyone what happened. If it weren't for Merlin stepping in, I would have killed him."
"How did he stop you?"
"Merlin told me Morgause lied that it was all an illusion. I believed him at first, but since finding out about his magic I suspect he was lying to protect me because the idiot thinks that is his duty."
"It was Morgause who used me as the conduit for her sleeping spell. I should not have believed her. I thought she cared about me. Then Merlin was forced to make a choice that I am not sure I ever could have made."
"When he poisoned you," Arthur said.
Morgana nodded, "I resented him for that…hated him. But now I see that he had no other option. I had become Morgause's pawn."
"I am realizing just how much Merlin has done, the burden he has carried all alone. I never knew…never appreciated him."
"Arthur, I'm going to attempt the spell now."
"What can I do to help?"
"Just place your hand over his heart and tell me if anything changes…if it slows or starts beating too quickly. I will stop if anything goes wrong."
Arthur nodded and did as she asked. Morgana moved to the other side of Merlin. Touching his forehead, she began incanting the words of a spell while Arthur watched. She repeated the words louder as her eyes lit up bright gold and her hands seemed to shimmer with a warm white light. She drew back, watching Merlin's face for any signs of waking. "Merlin, please open your eyes," she whispered.
Arthur moved to his friend's side touching his chest. "Heartbeat didn't change much at all, but his breathing is more even. The spell did something."
"Maybe I should try again," Morgana said her eyes shining with tears. "My magic feels different."
"Different how?" Arthur asked.
"I can't explain it."
"Well, when the expert here wakes up, he can help you figure it out."
"Merlin, can you hear me?" Morgana asked.
Merlin finally moved his head side to side and Arthur smiled. "Merlin, come on wake up, you lazy useless idiot. It's time to polish my armor."
"Polish your own armor, Clotpole," Merlin muttered.
"Merlin!" Morgana said touching his face.
Merlin opened his eyes lifting his head. "Ow…Arthur…"
"Don't make any sudden moves," Arthur said.
"Where—what happened?" Merlin asked.
"The Crystal Cave…don't you remember?" Morgana asked worried that his head injury was worse than they thought.
"Arthur?" Merlin asked, "What are you doing here?"
"Well, I have been searching the five kingdoms for your lazy backside for the past week. And my search led me here just as the whole place caved in."
"Cave in?" Merlin's eyes opened wide, "Morgana, are you hurt?"
"I'm fine, just a cut on my leg. I wasn't hurt as bad as you were," she smiled kissing him tenderly as he wrapped his arms around her.
"If I lost you," Merlin choked.
"You didn't lose me. In fact, the crystals finished what you started," she smiled.
"What do you mean?" he asked drawing back to look into her eyes.
"The Crystals reacted the way they did because of the darkness inside me. They purged me of it completely."
"How do you feel?"
"I feel good…but my magic is different. I am different."
"You healed me."
"Yes," she said, "Though I wasn't sure it would work."
Merlin looked at Arthur then tried to sit up, but Arthur put a hand in the middle of his chest holding him down. "The army…Camelot."
"Morgana told me. Right now, you need to rest. When you get back on your feet we will head home to Camelot."
"Wait…a week?" Merlin asked, "You're the king how were you able to be gone so long?"
"Officially, I am not the king at the moment. I left the kingdom in the capable hands of my beautiful queen."
"Are you crazy? Do you have a death wish? What were you thinking being out here alone with no protection?" Merlin asked angrily.
"I had to find you and I couldn't do it stuck in Camelot."
"Arthur, you should not have risked so much…not for me."
"Merlin, shut up," Arthur grinned.
Merlin glared at him then remembered something. He looked at Morgana. "Where's Arthur's sword?" he asked.
"Relax, Merlin…it's back where it belongs," Arthur grinned patting his hip.
"Don't ever lose it again," Merlin said.
"I won't," Arthur said looking confused, "Why are you so worried about my sword?"
"Because it isn't a normal sword. It was forged in a dragon's breath; it can kill anything even the dead."
"And you said it was just an old sword stuck in a stone," Arthur grinned, "You lied."
"The sword was forged originally by Gwen's father. She gave it to me, and I took it to Kilgharrah. It was meant to be used by you to kill the wraith, but your father took it from me and used it instead. Kilgharrah was furious so I had to get rid of it. I threw it in the lake of Avalon where I later retrieved it to fight the immortal army. I was the one to put it in the stone."
"I knew you were making up that whole story," Arthur chuckled.
"Well, it worked didn't it."
"Yes, I suppose it did. Now will you please stop talking and rest."
"I'm fine all right. Let me up," Merlin said.
"Fine, stubborn ass," Arthur said helping him to sit upright.
Merlin shook his head gently as everything blurred for a moment. "See I'm fine."
Morgana got in front of him, "How many of me do you see?"
"Two and I am going to kiss you both," Merlin grinned pulling her to him.
"He's fine," Arthur laughed watching the two of them kiss.
"He's fine," Morgana giggled.
"Thought you all might be hungry," Ingrid said as she handed each of them a plate of venison and beans with bread.
"Thank you, Ingrid," Arthur said.
"You're welcome, Your Majesty," she smiled and winked. Arthur turned to see both Merlin and Morgana staring at him. "What? I can't help it if she likes me."
"If Gwen ever finds out," Merlin chuckled.
"It's nothing all right. She just…"
"Just what?" Morgana asked.
"She may have kissed me earlier today…shut up both of you," Arthur said clearly flustered.
Merlin grinned, "Arthur, I do believe you are blushing."
"Just eat will you."
"I don't know, I think Gwen may have some competition," Morgana said stifling a laugh as she watched her brother get even redder.
"Stop it…both of you…eat now. That's an order."
"She is incredibly beautiful, Arthur," Merlin said his gaze following the leader of the bandits, "Very beautiful indeed."
Morgana punched him in the arm. "You aren't allowed to look."
Merlin laughed, "Jealous?"
"No," Morgana said eyeing him.
Merlin leaned closer and kissed her. "No one is more beautiful than you."
"You two are seriously killing my appetite," Arthur grimaced.
"My Lady," Sir Leon said as he entered the throne room.
"What is it? Is it Arthur?" Gwen asked.
"No, My Lady, patrols have returned. A massive army of Saxons is heading this way. They will reach Camelot by nightfall."
"Morgana?"
"She doesn't appear to be among them."
Gwen nodded, "All right…you know what to do. We follow Arthur's plan."
"Yes, My Lady," Sir Leon bowed then left the room.
Turning to the window, Gwen slowly fingered the wedding ring on her hand and uttered a prayer. "Please, Arthur hurry." They could withstand the army for a time, but she knew without Arthur and Merlin their chances of victory were slim. Now that she knew about Merlin's magic and all he had done, she knew Camelot would have fallen many times over without his help.
"Please, Arthur…" Gwen whispered again her eyes closing.
After another day of rest Merlin and Morgana were both ready for the journey to Camelot. They said their goodbyes to Ingrid and her men thanking them for their help and for the two horses they provided for Merlin and Morgana.
"Ingrid, I thank you, for everything," Arthur said.
"It was my pleasure, Your Majesty."
Arthur got the distinct feeling she was contemplating kissing him again, so he quickly mounted his horse. "You will be welcome in Camelot if you ever find yourself in the vicinity."
"I don't think your queen would approve," Ingrid teased.
Merlin and Morgana stifled a laugh then mounted their horses as Arthur gave them a very unamused glare.
"Thank you, Ingrid," Merlin said, "You and your men saved our lives."
"God speed, Emrys. Take care of our king," Ingrid said.
"I will. Though the dollop head doesn't always make it easy."
"Morgana, you have a long road ahead of you toward forgiveness, but you will get there. Take care of your boys help them bring about the world we all want," Ingrid nodded patting Morgana's hand.
"Boys?" Arthur said feigning offense.
"You do behave like boys," Morgana said.
Arthur shrugged and grinned, "It's his fault."
"My fault?" Merlin asked.
"Come on you two," Morgana said, rolling her eyes, as she nudged her horse ahead of them. Arthur caught up with Morgana passing her so he could lead.
"Goodbye, Ingrid," Merlin nodded before nudging his horse to follow, "Hopefully we will meet again."
"Safe travels," Ingrid called after them.
They made good time with the mild weather and slight breeze. Stopping only to water and feed the horses before setting out again. They would reach Camelot well before nightfall if their luck held out.
"Are you doing all right, Merlin," Arthur asked.
"I'm fine. Good as new."
"Would you tell us if you weren't?"
"Probably not," Merlin shrugged.
"Can you two really stop them?"
"The two of us together yes," Morgana said.
"What about your magic?" Arthur asked her.
"Her magic is stronger than before the cave," Merlin said.
"Stronger?" Arthur asked.
"Merlin said my magic was altered by the crystals when they purified me. It is more powerful because it comes from a place of light inside me rather than darkness. I guess you could say my magic is now more like his."
"That is about as clear as mud to me," Arthur grinned.
"I need to talk to Gaius when we get back. He will be able to explain it better," Merlin said.
"So can you two feel each other's power?"
"Yes," Morgana smiled at Merlin, "More so now than before all this happened."
"That must be strange."
"Not really," Merlin said.
"When this is all over what are you going to do?" Arthur asked.
"Do?" Morgana asked.
"Will you stay in Camelot, Morgana?"
"I would like to," she said hesitantly, "I suppose it depends on the outcome of this battle and if Gwen will forgive me for all I have done to her."
"Well, for what it's worth, I want you to stay," Arthur said.
"Thank you, Arthur," Morgana smiled tears shining in her eyes.
Merlin rode up next to her reaching for her hand giving her a wide grin.
"There it is," Arthur said as he stopped his horse on a rise where he could see Camelot in the distance. He had only been gone for a little over a week, but it felt like a lifetime.
"All seems calm," Merlin said as he and Morgana rode up next to him.
"The army is close, I can feel them," Morgana said.
"Merlin, the cavern beneath the castle, do you know how to access it from the outside?" Arthur asked.
"I've never tried. Why?"
"I ordered Gwaine to take Gwen down there to keep her safe if anything happened."
Merlin nodded, "Good plan."
"I figured with you and all your secret rendezvous with the dragon you could get us in that way."
With a huge grin Merlin glanced at Morgana and she laughed knowing exactly what he was thinking. Arthur suddenly looked uneasy.
"What?" he asked.
"I know exactly how to get us in there, but you aren't going to like it."
"You're not…"
"Oh, I am," Merlin grinned, "Come on, this way."
Morgana urged her horse after Merlin as Arthur paused to reconsider his request. "I am definitely going to regret this," he said then followed them.
Merlin stopped his horse on the edge of a clearing then tethered the mare to a tree before walking into the center of it.
"Close your eyes and listen, it is amazing," Morgana smiled her eyes shining with emotion as she closed them.
Arthur kept his open watching Merlin as he stood perfectly still slowly tilting his head back. The voice than erupted from within him was deep, powerful and would have been terrifying if it had come from anyone else. The words Arthur did not understand, but he felt the power behind them.
"O drakon, e male so ftengometta tesd'hup'anankes!"
"I will never get tired of hearing him do that for as long as I live," Morgana sighed.
Arthur said nothing as the sound of giant wings cut through the air overhead. His eyes grew wide as the Great Dragon landed directly in front of Merlin.
"Our ride awaits, dear brother," Morgana said.
"Yep, definitely going to regret this," Arthur said.
"It's time, My Lady," Gwaine said from the doorway.
"Yes," Gwen nodded then turned grabbing her cloak she moved toward him.
"Don't worry," Gwaine smiled reassuringly, "Arthur's plan is a good one."
"I know, I just hope we can hold out long enough."
"We need to go now. We must get you to safety."
Gwen nodded then stepped into the corridor as Gwaine closed the door. They made their way through the palace to the dungeons only instead of going to the cells, Gwaine stopped at a gate lighting a torch then he helped Gwen down an
endless flight of stairs emerging into a cavern deep below the castle.
"Dear God, this place is immense," Gwen said in awe. "I have never been down here before."
"Me neither. Arthur said this is where Uther kept the Great Dragon prisoner. Are you cold?" Gwaine asked.
"A little," Gwen smiled.
"Here," Gwaine unfolded a blanket wrapping it around her shoulders. "I know it isn't exactly luxury, but it is safe. There is water, a cot, blankets, and candles. I will stay with you."
"No, Gwaine, you'll be needed in the battle."
"Arthur said I am not to leave your side for any reason. Not that I would anyway."
Gwen smiled placing her hand on Gwaine's chest. "Thank you. You're a good man and a loyal friend."
"Of course, My Lady," Gwaine grinned.
"While we're stuck down here you may as well just call me Gwen."
"All right," he said then motioned to the cot. "Gwen, sit here on the cot and I will start a small fire. Though it likely won't help much."
"Don't worry about a fire, just talk to me please."
Gwaine chuckled, "That is a first, usually people want me to stop talking." He sat down on the ground at the queen's feet.
"Do you ever miss your nomadic life? Traveling all over…no roots?"
"Sometimes," Gwaine grinned, "But I get in a whole lot less trouble these days."
"I have spent my entire life here in Camelot and now I am queen, and if Arthur…" her voice broke as tears filled her eyes. "I'm not sure I am strong enough, Gwaine."
"Gwen, you are the strongest woman I have ever known, and your people love you."
"And yet I am hiding in this place while they are out there in mortal danger."
"Arthur wanted to make certain that you were protected. If anything were to happen to him, you are his only family and his heir."
"Gwaine, it is not for myself that I am doing this. It's for Arthur's legacy," Gwen said placing her hand over her abdomen. "Arthur doesn't even know. I found out after he left."
Gwaine grinned, "That is amazing news. Arthur is going to be thrilled."
"If anything happens to him…"
"Gwen, believe me, I have seen what Arthur is capable of and if he found Merlin the two of them together are pretty much unstoppable."
"Gwaine, you knew about Merlin?"
"That he has magic? No, but I can't say that I am surprised. I always knew there was something about him that was special. I never met anyone in all my travels who was more willing to sacrifice himself for others. He does things just for the good of doing them never expecting any credit or praise. Merlin is a good man…one of the best."
"I was Merlin's first friend here other than Gaius of course. When he came to Camelot, he was so innocent, brave, and hopeful. Over the years I watched him change. I think keeping his secret and protecting Arthur took its toll on him."
"I saw it too," Gwaine nodded, "After I became a knight, I let my duties get in the way. I should have been there for him. He is the best friend I ever had, and I let him down."
"I think we all did on some level."
"When Arthur brings him home that's going to change," Gwaine said.
"Arthur told me about the Perilous Lands…his quest. He would have died if you and Merlin had not gone after him."
Gwaine chuckled and raised an eyebrow, "He actually told you we saved him?"
"Well, no…not exactly," Gwen smiled, "But I have learned how to read between the lines. He said Merlin never listens…never does what he is told."
"It's funny…looking back now, Merlin's magic it makes so many pieces fall into place."
"Like what?" Gwen asked.
"Like how in the hell he survived the Doracha. He took a direct hit. He should have been dead instantly. Then Lancelot took him to the Valley of the Fallen Kings and the next thing we know they caught up to us and Merlin was completely fine."
Gwen shook her head, "I didn't know about that."
"I think Lancelot knew about his magic."
"He did?"
"Lancelot knew that Arthur must live for you and that Merlin must live for Arthur. That is why he chose to walk into that tear in the veil."
"We owe Merlin so much. I don't know how we will ever repay him. Or if we will even get the chance," Gwen said wiping a tear from her cheek. "Without Arthur and Merlin…"
"Gwen, they will make it back. I have no doubt."
"Thank you, Gwaine…you have no idea how much your friendship means to me."
"It is my honor," Gwaine smiled, "Now why don't you lie down and get some rest. I will start that fire. I will not leave your side. Gaius will be down in a few hours with food."
Gwen nodded, then laid down on the cot. She was almost asleep when they heard a sound. She sat up looking at Gwaine who was standing with his sword at the ready.
"What was that?"
"Not sure," Gwaine said.
They heard it again. It was coming from somewhere above them in the cavern.
"Get behind me, Gwen," Gwaine said. He looked up as a massive dragon swooped down its huge powerful wings shattering the calm, the force causing stones to crumble and fall. "Holy hell…"
"Gwaine," Gwen said softly, "It's okay…"
"What?" he looked at her in confusion.
"It's Merlin…he's a Dragonlord," she laughed.
"Merlin is a Dragonlord," Gwaine chuckled, "That explains a few things."
Kilgharrah landed hard on his old perch. His head dropped down to allow his passengers to slide off.
"Thank you, Kilgharrah," Merlin said as he slid to the ground followed by Morgana and Arthur.
"Need I remind you, Young Warlock, that I am not a horse. This will not be repeated."
Arthur looked up at the dragon his eyes wary, "Your help is appreciated, Kilgharrah. I will not forget this."
"I should hope not," Kilgharrah said, "The future of Albion is on your shoulders, young king. You will only triumph with the help of the people around you. Do not make the same mistakes your father did."
"I won't," Arthur nodded.
"I have one more favor to ask," Merlin said, "Is there anything you could do to slow down the army?"
"I shall try," Kilgharrah bowed, "The demons will be unaffected."
"Whatever you can do will be an immense help," Arthur said still unable to believe that he was talking to not just a dragon, but the very dragon that had once tried to destroy Camelot and was now helping to save it.
"Good luck to you both," Kilgharrah said then launched into the air.
"Now that is what I call an entrance, my friends," Gwaine chuckled.
Merlin held out his hand, his eyes turning gold as a bridge of light spanned the gap. Arthur took a hesitant step then ran across and into the arms of his wife. "Come on," Merlin grinned taking hold of Morgana's hand leading her across.
"I told you I would be back," Arthur grinned, kissing Gwen passionately.
"Arthur," Gwen kissed him back, throwing her arms around his neck. She looked over his shoulder and froze as she found herself looking into the eyes of the woman who had been her best friend and betrayed her. "Arthur?" she asked softly.
"It's all right, Guinevere," Arthur said then stepped aside, "Morgana is here to help us."
"Gwen," Morgana said her voice trembling her eyes filling with tears.
"Morgana, why are you here?" Gwen asked coldly.
Merlin met Gwen's gaze and nodded reassuringly.
"Gwen, I know I have no right to ask for your forgiveness," Morgana whispered.
"No, you really don't," Gwen cried.
Morgana slowly dropped to her knees in front of Gwen. "My Lady, I only wish to help Camelot. I have wronged you I know. Please, allow me to try and undo this one mistake."
Gwen looked at Arthur then Merlin the conflict in her dark eyes giving way to the hint of forgiveness. Placing her hand on Morgana's cheek she moved it to her chin as she urged the woman to her feet. "Morgana," Gwen said softly, "It is out of the love I still have for my best friend that I give you this chance. Do not waste it."
Morgana gave a shaky nod her eyes shining with tears. "I won't I swear."
Gwen put her arms around the woman holding her tightly. Morgana relaxed in her embrace closing her eyes tightly. "I always hoped you would find your way back into the light. I had almost given up on the possibility yet here you are."
"It was the light that found me again," Morgana said as she drew back from Gwen's embrace turning to meet Merlin's gaze.
"Merlin," Gwen said, "It is so good to see you."
"You too, My Lady," Merlin grinned and bowed.
"Let's get out of here," Arthur said grabbing a torch from the ground he looked at Merlin. "A little help here," he grinned.
"Forbearnan," both Merlin and Morgana said their eyes glowing gold at the exact same time. The torch flared to life.
"Oh!" Gwen gasped.
Gwaine chuckled, "That explains a few things."
"Right," Arthur laughed, "The fire in the slavers castle that saved our backsides."
"Merlin, you are a sight for sore eyes," Gwaine said embracing his friend smacking him on the back. He turned to Morgana with a dangerous look in his eyes. "Lady Morgana…"
"Sir Gwaine," Morgana said with a slight bow.
"If you do anything to hurt my friends again," Gwaine said, leaning close to her, teeth clenched, "I will end you, whatever it takes."
Morgana met his gaze with a nod. "Then you should know, Arthur's sword will do just that. It has the power to kill anything."
"I will definitely keep that in mind," Gwaine said his eyes glinting with a mix of surprise and wariness.
"I wouldn't expect anything less," Morgana said with a sad smile.
"Gwaine," Merlin said taking hold of her hand, "Morgana is with us now."
"Let's hope you're right," Gwaine said, still eying her warily.
"Come on, we have an army of Saxons and demons to defeat," Arthur said then lead the way up the stairs.
Merlin and Arthur stood high on the roof of the castle looking out over the land. The army had arrived they were pushing at the gates waiting for nightfall.
They looked up as they heard Kilgharrah's wings slicing through the air. The dragon roared then swooped down over the army his fire taking out a wide swath of men leaving scorched bodies and earth in his wake.
"Merlin, remind me never to make him angry again," Arthur said, eyes open wide, "That is frightening."
"It's not the first time he has helped us like this," Merlin said sheepishly.
"What Merlin?" Arthur asked.
"Let's just say Agravaine and his army had a similar experience."
"You mean Ealdor, the tunnels?" Arthur asked shaking his head, "Merlin…"
"You wanted me to tell you everything…"
"Yes, well…just make sure he doesn't turn on us again."
Kilgharrah made two more passes over the army before swooping down over the castle.
"Our turn," Arthur said as he unsheathed his sword then ran down the steps heading for the square with Merlin right behind him. They emerged in the courtyard as the knights and soldiers assumed their positions.
"Morgana," Merlin said as she approached them, "Are you ready?"
"Yes," Morgana smiled.
"Good luck," Arthur said then took off running to join his Knights.
"Are you scared?" Merlin asked.
"Not anymore," Morgana beamed then kissed him.
"Whatever happens…" Merlin began, but she pressed her hand to his lips.
"Let's just get through this," she said.
Merlin nodded. Standing dead center in the courtyard, they took hold of each other's hands and closing their eyes, they lowered their heads.
Arthur looked up as the sun disappeared and the sky went dark. A chill ran through him as he remembered the thing that grabbed Merlin that night. How many were out there? Looking at his sister, he wanted nothing more than to be able to trust her fully again. It was obvious that she was no longer the woman who conjured the demons, but how hard would it be for her to slip back into the darkness again?
The air became charged. The ground beneath their feet began to shake. He glanced up just as the sky began to churn with blacker-than-the-night, snakelike creatures. He remembered the Doracha, which still made him shiver, but these things were an endless twisted writhing mass of pure evil. Their only hope for survival was the two people standing together in the courtyard.
Merlin and Morgana turned to face the onslaught, their eyes opened, burning gold. Pushing their hands out in front of their bodies, they began to incant a spell in perfect unison. A pulse of energy shook the ground as a golden mist surrounded them rising into the night, sending a wave of light through the air that would be seen for miles. Reaching toward each other with one hand, their palms outstretched, the moment they touched a shockwave disrupted the demons' movement and horizontal lightning shot across the sky.
Arthur looked up, fear in his eyes, as the lightning continued, the golden mist swirled through the air surrounding the dark beings pulling them downward as a hole opened up in the courtyard directly in front of Merlin and Morgana. Their voices grew louder, deeper…almost inhuman as they chanted words he did not recognize.
Gwaine came to stand next to the king, his mouth open, staring at the intense and terrifyingly powerful sorcerers before him. If he did not know it was Merlin he would have been running in the other direction.
"They are really doing it," Arthur said.
"Well," Gwaine nodded as they were hit by another wave of energy that nearly knocked them off their feet, "I for one will sleep better knowing those two are on the same side."
"So will I," Arthur said.
The demons screamed as they were sucked down into the hole then it vanished leaving not one cobblestone out of place. Arthur let out a deep sigh looking at Gwaine.
Morgana let go of Merlin's hand as she stood over where the hole had been, incanting another spell to seal the pit.
"You did it," Merlin said softly.
"We did it," she smiled falling into his arms.
"Are you both all right?" Arthur asked as he and Gwaine approached them.
"We are fine," Merlin said, "You?"
"All good," Gwaine grinned. "The Saxons who weren't taken out by the dragon are in full retreat. We have two dead and four injured."
"That is good news, it could have been so much worse," Arthur said then turned to Merlin and Morgana. "What you both did, that was incredible. Thank you."
"Arthur," Morgana said as she stepped toward him.
"Morgana," Arthur smiled pulling her into his embrace, "You did it."
Merlin smiled, watching brother and sister. Just as he took a step toward them, he heard something behind him then felt invisible hands crushing his throat as his eyes rolled back in his head.
"Merlin!" Arthur shouted.
Morgana turned, throwing her hands out, her eyes burning like fire. "Let him go," she screamed, her magic grabbing the demon holding it suspended keeping it from disappearing with Merlin.
Arthur and Gwaine lunged forward. Arthur stabbed the demon with his sword, it screamed then let go of Merlin. Gwaine pulled him clear holding his friend against his chest while he struggled to breathe. The marks on his neck looked red and raw like burns.
"Morgana," Merlin said, his voice hoarse. He could tell that she was losing control of the demon and reached his arm out trying to focus his magic. His head was spinning, his lungs felt like they were on fire.
"Merlin," Morgana said, meeting his gaze with a soft smile, "I love you." Then she dropped her hands and collapsed. The demon broke free of her hold, its arms crawling around her, snapping her up off the ground dragging her into the night.
"Morgana!" Merlin yelled in panic as he struggled to his feet turning in circles as he scanned the air, but she was gone. "No!" he cried out dropping to his knees, his hands on his head, shaking violently.
"Merlin," Arthur said as he reached his friend putting his arms around his shoulders. "We will find her…I swear. We will get her back."
Arthur sat by the fire, studying Merlin as his friend stared into the flames. He was worried about him. The man barely slept and the only reason he ate or drank water was to keep his energy up for the search. There were dark circles beneath his eyes and his cheekbones had become more prominent as he lost weight. Worst of all was the darkness that had settled in his soul.
"Merlin," Arthur said passing him the waterskin which he refused with a shake of his head. "You are not going to find Morgana if you don't take care of yourself."
Merlin finally took it reluctantly but didn't drink he just held it and kept staring into the fire. "She loved me, and I failed her," he whispered, his voice breaking.
"You heard what the Druids said. She is alive and we will find her."
"Kilgharrah told us that some paths must be traveled on faith not prophecy," Merlin said. "I am losing faith."
Arthur nodded, "Can you still feel her magic?"
"Yes, but it's like trying to grasp a single raindrop in the middle of a deluge."
"We are not going to give up until we find her," Arthur said.
"It has been so long," Merlin frowned. "What if she has fallen back into the dark magic? I may never be able to reach her again."
"I was there, Merlin, I heard her. She loves you. You gave her back her humanity. You made her feel loved again."
"She is out there alone, and it is my fault."
"How is it your fault?"
"Every time I do something that goes against my destiny, I lose someone I love."
Arthur shook his head, "No, I refuse to believe that."
Merlin looked at him, "I'm going to take a walk." Then he got up stepping over Arthur's outstretched legs heading for the river.
Arthur tossed another log on the fire. It hurt that he couldn't do anything to help his friend. It was frustrating. Morgana was his sister and he had always loved her even when she turned against him. But knowing how much Merlin needed her back, and he was powerless to help, made him angry.
"Where's Merlin?" Gwaine asked as he returned with an armload of firewood.
"He went for a walk down by the river."
"It has been more than eight months since Morgana was taken, do you really think we will find her?" Gwaine asked the uncomfortable question.
"We have to," Arthur said.
"Merlin is not going to give up. He will run himself into the ground."
"I know," Arthur said softly.
Merlin sat on a flat rock, his feet braced against the branch of a fallen tree, the river swirling around him. He closed his eyes trying again to reach out with his magic searching for Morgana. Pushing all other thoughts from his head he listened to the rushing water, the sound of the wind, the leaves, the insects. His heartbeat seemed to slow down, his breathing shallow.
"Morgana," he said his voice echoing through the night. The only response was silence, but he tried again. "Morgana, I will not give up on you. Please, I love you…I need you back."
Then he felt something. It began as a tingling sensation in his fingertips then spread throughout his body. He focused on it pushing his magic outward searching for the source. Tilting his head, he felt it slipping away.
"No," Merlin shouted, "I will not let go." His eyes lit up gold, he pushed harder his heart pounding in his chest.
"Merlin," Arthur called out as he and Gwaine approached. He stopped cold as he saw Merlin's eyes. His skin pale as a ghost, blood dripping from his nose. "Merlin, stop…you're bleeding."
"No!" Merlin said shaking his head slowly.
"Merlin!" Arthur started to grab him, but Gwaine held him back.
"Look," Gwaine said motioning beyond their friend. "The river." The flow of the river slowed to the point where it seemed to stop moving completely. "What is he doing?"
"I have no idea," Arthur said his voice trembling as he moved forward. The closer he got to Merlin the more resistance he felt. The air felt cold and thick.
"Merlin," Gwaine said.
Merlin suddenly felt Morgana…she was alive. There was a pulsating power that he didn't understand, it swirled around nearly eclipsing hers. He felt it envelope him pulling at his body, as if beckoning him to follow.
"Morgana," Merlin gasped, his magic flowing back into him leaving him breathless.
"Merlin, what the hell did you do?" Arthur asked as he was finally able to grab hold of his friend.
The river returned to its natural state.
Merlin looked at him his hand wiping at the blood under his nose. His eyes half closing as his breathing returned to normal.
"Are you trying to kill yourself?" Gwaine asked as he tore a piece of his own shirt, soaking it in the water, before wiping away the blood.
"Morgana is alive," Merlin said, his eyes opening wider.
"Do you know where she is?"
Merlin nodded and grinned, "Yes…she's close."
Arthur helped him to his feet. "Where is she?"
"This way," Merlin said then took off running at full speed through the darkness following the river.
"Gwaine," Arthur said shaking his head, "I'm going after him."
"I will grab the horses and follow."
Arthur ran, trying to keep from falling flat on his face. Luckily, the trail along the river was fairly flat with few obstacles. He tried to keep Merlin in sight, but the man could run. They came to a bridge and Merlin stopped suddenly, giving Arthur a moment to catch up.
"Do you even know where you're going?"
"This way," Merlin said, crossing the bridge just as Gwaine caught up with two of their horses.
Arthur climbed into the saddle looking at him, "I am too old for this."
Gwaine chuckled then they urged the horses after Merlin.
Merlin ran until he was shaking, his legs threatening to give out. Taking a breath, he pushed on, tearing through the woods following the wave of power that was already beginning to fade. He had to find Morgana before it went away again.
As he came over a rise, he saw the small village nestled between the river and a hillside. He smiled; Morgana was in that village he could feel her. Arthur and Gwaine caught up just as Merlin made his way across the river. The water was above his knees.
Merlin reached the other side. The village was much larger than Ealdor he could see houses that were all dark. There was one building that looked to be a tavern with an inn. It was the only structure with light shining from the windows. He pushed the door open to a nearly empty tavern. There were only a handful of men in the corner drinking and shouting at the woman serving them.
"Can I help you, handsome?"
Merlin turned as another woman emerged from a back room. "I am looking for a woman. Dark hair, green eyes, incredibly beautiful. Is she here?"
The woman's eyes lit up. "You must be Merlin," she smiled.
"Yes," he said, relief washing over him. "Where is she?"
"This way," the woman said taking hold of his arm, "Hakon and I found her wandering alone in the woods many months ago. She calls out for you in her sleep."
"I have been searching everywhere for her," Merlin said.
"You look like you are ready to drop, poor boy. My name is Yenna," she smiled as they climbed steps to the second floor. "We have been taking good care of her. She had a head injury as well as cuts and bruises that were badly infected causing a fever. We were worried because of her condition…"
"Her condition?" Merlin asked.
"Aye," Yenna beamed as she opened the door to a small, but well-lit room. She stepped back letting Merlin through the door first. He froze as he saw her. Morgana was lying on her side, one arm tucked beneath her pillow and the other draped across her very round abdomen.
"The midwife said the babies will come very soon."
"Babies?" Merlin asked, his eyes wide.
"Yes, it is a rare thing. Reina is certain there are two and she has never been wrong in all the years I have helped her." Yenna beamed as she patted Merlin's shoulder. "I will leave you alone with her."
"Morgana," Merlin said making his way to the bed. "I'm here…"
Morgana's eyelids fluttered. "Merlin?" she said softly as her eyes opened.
"I'm here…Morgana, I found you," he laughed leaning over to kiss her pressing his forehead to hers.
"Merlin," she sobbed in relief.
"I'm so sorry it took me so long."
Morgana threw her arms around his neck holding him tightly. "I knew you were searching. I felt your magic. I tried to reach out but mine has been so unstable with the fever and the babies."
"Our babies," Merlin grinned, kissing her.
Morgana nodded touching his cheek. "Merlin, you look so thin and exhausted."
"I am fine, really."
"You didn't give up on me."
"Never…I love you…I love you so much."
"I love you too," Morgana smiled. "Are you here alone?"
"No, Arthur and Gwaine are here with me. We have been scouring all five kingdoms searching for you. We even went to the Druids they told me you were alive, but they couldn't find you either."
"Help me sit up," Morgana said softly.
Merlin nodded, gently sliding his arm behind her back as she moved her legs over the side of the bed. He wrapped a blanket around her shoulders then crouched in front of her.
"I am so sorry you had to go through this without me," Merlin said.
"You're here now, that is all that matters," Morgana said, then she giggled. "Give me your hand," she said, "They are moving."
Merlin gently placed his hands on her stomach. He felt the flutter of movement his eyes widening in amazement. "I'm really going to be a father."
Morgana nodded, "And I think they are the reason you couldn't focus on my magic."
"What do you mean?"
"Their father was born with magic."
Merlin looked at her. "That's what I was feeling. Every time I tried to find you there was another power eclipsing yours."
"We are going to have our hands full," Morgana laughed, "Two babies with magic."
"Yes, we are," Merlin grinned kissing her passionately, "You are so beautiful."
"I'm huge," she said rolling her eyes.
"I can't believe it."
Morgana placed her hand on his cheek. "I have had a lot of time to get used to the idea. I think Kilgharrah knew somehow. That is what he meant when he said our destinies were now permanently intertwined. And what he said about the lives of those depending on both of us."
"Of course," Merlin chuckled shaking his head, "Faith and prophecy…that damn dragon and his riddles and vague answers."
"I understand what he meant though."
"Yes, so do I, but he still makes me angry."
There was a soft knock on the door just then. They both looked up as Arthur entered the room hesitantly.
"Arthur!" Morgana said.
Arthur looked at her then Merlin, surprise registering on his face. "Morgana," he grinned as he embraced her, "You're…"
"Yes, I am."
"Twins," Merlin chuckled his eyes shining with happiness.
"Twins?" Arthur said as he sat down on the end of the bed.
"They have magic, Arthur…that's what was blocking me from Morgana."
"Magic? You can tell already?"
"Arthur, their father was born with it and in a way, I suppose I was too, even though my powers didn't emerge until I was older."
"I guess it's a good thing I am lifting the ban on magic in Camelot then."
Merlin and Morgana looked at him then at each other. "We're free?" Merlin said.
"Yes, or you will be very soon. Guinevere has been working on it in my absence."
"Morgana, Gwen and Arthur have a daughter now, she was born last month."
"Oh, that is wonderful news," Morgana said, "What's her name?"
"Anna Ygraine," Arthur said.
"Beautiful name."
"I am so glad we found you," Arthur smiled.
"I wasn't sure you would even look for me," Morgana said, "After everything…"
"Morgana, you are my sister and I love you. I never stopped loving you."
"I love you too," she whispered.
Arthur touched her face then kissed her forehead. He then stood up. "I am going back downstairs. Gwaine is on his fourth tankard of mead by now. I got us rooms for a couple of days."
"I'm going to stay here with Morgana," Merlin said.
"I figured as much," Arthur said patting his friend's shoulder. "Yenna said to tell you that she is sending up a meal for you. She said something along the lines of the lad is too skinny we must feed him."
"Tell her thank you," Morgana said.
Arthur left the room closing the door behind him.
"Do you want to lie down again?" Merlin asked and Morgana nodded. He helped her to lie down adjusting the pillows to make her as comfortable as possible. "Do you need anything?"
"Just you," she smiled touching his face.
"Yenna said the babies would be born soon."
Morgana nodded, "Yes…"
"It won't be safe for you to travel then. I will stay with you until they are born then we will go back together."
"Arthur needs you, Merlin."
"Arthur will be fine without me. You need me more. I feel so bad that I wasn't here for you."
"You shouldn't feel bad it was not your fault."
"What happened after that demon took you?"
"I fought it with everything I had. I was finally able to break free. I sent it back to the other world, but I was left deep in the woods. I had no idea where I was. Yenna and her husband Hakon found me and brought me here."
"She said you had a fever."
"Yes, but I am fine now…the babies are fine."
"They are strong like their mother," Merlin grinned.
"And stubborn like their father."
"We are going to be so happy, Morgana."
"I know."
"We will get married of course," Merlin smiled.
"You want to marry me?"
"More than anything."
"I wasn't sure…"
"Do you not want to marry me?"
"Oh, I do, Merlin…more than anything."
Merlin smiled and kissed her. "Good. I will send word to my mother so she can meet us in Camelot when we return."
The door opened and Yenna entered with a young boy carrying water and food. "Merlin, come, eat…eat all of it and I will bring more if you are still hungry. My son is the same size as you so here are clean dry clothes. The King and Sir Gwaine are down in the tavern."
"Thank you, Yenna, so much."
"Don't thank me, just get over here and eat. Too skinny…far too skinny. You look like you haven't had a decent meal in months."
Morgana held back a giggle as Merlin was dragged over to the table and pushed firmly down on a chair, a huge plate of food placed in front of him.
"Eat…" Yenna said watching him like a mother hen. After he'd taken a few bites, she turned to Morgana. "You look happy, your Merlin found you at last."
"Yes, he did."
"Are you hungry, I brought extra for you."
"I will eat something later I promise."
"Good, the midwife said she will be by to check on you tomorrow. Get some rest, both of you," Yenna said kissing Morgana on the top of her head then she and the boy left the room.
Merlin and Morgana looked at each other and laughed.
An hour later, Morgana had fallen asleep leaving Merlin with too much silence and too much time to think. He decided to go downstairs for a tankard of mead. Gwaine and Arthur were alone in the room and looked up as he walked in.
"Merlin, my friend!" Gwaine raised his tankard.
"Gwaine, you're still upright?" Merlin asked with a grin.
"Of course. I had to congratulate the father to be."
Merlin sat down in the chair releasing a deep sigh, tilting his head back for a moment. "I can't believe it…twins," he grinned. Yenna put a tankard of mead on the table in front of him. "Thank you, Yenna."
"You are supposed to be resting, lad. Well, if you're going to be down here you are going to eat." She left returning a few minutes later with more food.
Arthur chuckled, "You better eat up, you are going to need all the energy you can get with two babies."
"Two babies with magic," Merlin said raising an eyebrow.
"Magic?" Gwaine asked, "Arthur, you left that part out."
Merlin drank his mead picking at the pork and vegetables on the plate. "What am I going to do?" he asked. "A wife and two babies to raise."
"A wife?" Arthur asked.
"Were getting married," Merlin grinned, "As soon as we get back to Camelot. I will have to find us a house."
Gwaine chuckled, "I'm sure the Princess here will be happy to give you a raise."
"Of course," Arthur said.
Merlin sat quietly taking another bite of the pork. He looked at his friends as a huge grin spread across his face. "I'm going to be a father."
"Yes, it seems so," Arthur grinned.
Gwaine winked at Merlin, "I'm proud of you, my friend."
"Proud, why?" Merlin asked.
Arthur immediately got what Gwaine was getting at and elbowed him. "Gwaine, really?"
"What? I'm just saying he must have been really good…"
"Gwaine," Merlin grinned his face turning red.
"Shut up, Gwaine," Arthur glared at him.
"Yes, Princess," he grinned but proceeded to nudge Merlin's leg beneath the table followed by a nod and another wink.
Changing the subject before his knight could further embarrass Merlin, Arthur glanced over at Yenna. "Yenna said that Morgana cannot travel."
"Not until the babies are born," Merlin said. "We cannot risk it."
Arthur nodded, "I am going to return to Camelot tomorrow."
"Yes, you should get back to your family. Gwen and Anna need you. I cannot thank you enough…both of you for helping me."
"Merlin, you idiot. You are my family," Arthur grinned, "You are my brother, Merlin. More than a brother…always have been."
"And you are obviously drunk," Merlin chuckled.
"Perfectly sober this is only my second tankard."
"Except that you failed to notice that Gwaine has been refilling it every time you look away."
Arthur looked at Gwaine accusingly and the knight just shrugged.
"Can't have the king going thirsty now can we," he grinned.
"Maybe I am a little drunk," Arthur laughed, "But I meant every word."
"Thank you, Arthur," Merlin smiled, "I better get back upstairs. I don't want to leave Morgana alone for too long."
"Don't worry I will take care of the drunkard here," Gwaine said.
"Good night," Merlin smiled as he got up and headed toward the stairs.
"Cheers," Arthur leaned back in his chair nearly toppling over.
"Whoa there, Your Majesty," Gwaine grinned, "I think you have reached your limit. Time to get you upstairs to bed."
"I'll have you know I am perfectly fine."
"You won't be in the morning."
Arthur stood up and wobbled. "Maybe you're right."
"Bed for you, Your Majesty," Gwaine chuckled guiding the king toward the stairs.
"You're a good man, Gwaine," Arthur grinned.
"Yep definitely drunk."
Merlin slipped quietly into the room not wanting to disturb Morgana. He sat down, removing his boots placing them by the fire along with his damp socks. Taking off his jacket, shirt, and trousers, he leaned over the washbasin warming the water with a flash of gold then proceeded to wash. Reaching for the clean clothes Yenna had brought he glanced over at the bed to see Morgana watching him.
"Sorry," he said, "I didn't mean to wake you."
"Leave the clothes, come here," Morgana smiled drawing the covers back. Merlin slid into bed. She kissed him tenderly caressing his face. "I keep thinking this is all a dream, that I will wake up and you won't be here."
"Morgana, I am here, and I am never leaving you again," Merlin said, "I love you."
"I'm scared, Merlin."
"We're going to be just fine," he said putting his hand on her abdomen, "I promise."
Morgana nodded slowly, tears in her eyes. "You need to sleep," she whispered.
Merlin pressed his lips to hers then gathered her into his arms. "Sleep will not be a problem now that I have you back in my arms."
"Merlin," Morgana said looking into his blue eyes, "What will our children think of me when they find out everything I did?"
"We have both made mistakes, Morgana and I've been asking myself that same question. I do not know the answer. What I do know without a doubt is that we will love them and show them the right path while making sure they know that even when they make bad choices there is always a way back."
"How could Arthur ever believe you to be an idiot?" Morgana smiled her fingertip tracing his cheekbone, "You are beyond wise."
"Let's just say I gave him plenty of reasons to think that way."
"Merlin, I have a confession to make."
"Oh?"
"The night you came to check on me, after we returned from the Druids. I really wanted you to kiss me."
"You did?" Merlin asked grinning.
"I did," Morgana smiled, "But I fear if you had I might not have let you leave."
"Considering that Arthur was watching me when I left your chambers that would have been fun to explain."
"Why was he watching you?"
"He suspected that I had feelings for you and made a point to tell me that you could never be my friend let alone anything else."
"That may have been true at the time, Uther would have killed you if he suspected anything was going on between us. But still, Arthur had no right to tell you that."
"It doesn't matter because my feelings never went away. They only grew despite everything. I can't explain any of it. Just that I always felt a bond with you."
"I felt it too I think. That's why I never could quite bring myself to kill you," Morgana gave him a sheepish smile.
"It sure didn't stop you from trying," Merlin sighed giving her a crooked grin.
Morgana kissed him, "I am so glad I failed."
"Me too," he smiled then kissed her back.
"We should sleep," Morgana said.
"Yes, we should…" Merlin said huskily.
Morgana giggled wrapping her arms around his neck.
It had been five days since Arthur left for Camelot. The morning he left, Gwaine had gone with him as far as their abandoned campsite to retrieve Merlin's horse and their belongings returning to the village that afternoon.
Merlin sat on a bench watching Gwaine sharpen his sword. He'd left Morgana sleeping not wanting to disturb her by lingering around in their room. She needed all the rest she could get right now. Yenna kept reassuring him that all was well, but he couldn't stop worrying.
"You should have gone with him," Merlin said, "Arthur needs you by his side. I don't like leaving him without my protection."
"Arthur can take care of himself. I am here to protect you and your family."
"Gwaine, you are a knight, aren't you bored just waiting."
"Not at all," Gwaine grinned, "There are some very pretty girls here in the village and lots of ale."
Merlin laughed, "Of course."
Gwaine sheathed his sword then looked at Merlin. He could see the worry in his friend's eyes. "So, are you going to tell me what's bothering you?"
"It's not…I don't know exactly."
"You can talk to me, Merlin. I know I'm not Gaius or Arthur, but I am here for you. I joke around and drink too much, but I care."
"I know you do, Gwaine. Your friendship means a lot to me."
"So, what is it?"
Merlin frowned, "It's just when I look back at the things I have done…the good and the bad. I can't help but wonder what kind of father I will be to my children. I want them to be proud of me. I barely knew my father, I have no idea who he truly was or the things he did in his life, but I still feel pride in being his son because of the legacy he passed down to me as a Dragonlord."
Gwaine sat down next to Merlin, "I can understand that."
"Really?"
"Sure, my father was a knight and for a long time I thought he would be disappointed in me. Then I became a Knight of Camelot and I finally felt like maybe I am worthy of his legacy after all."
"Gwaine, your father would have been proud of you, knight or not," Merlin said.
"Maybe," Gwaine grinned.
"I'm scared to death," Merlin laughed softly.
"You will be fine. You are the strongest, kindest, bravest, most selfless man I have ever known. You will be a great father."
"Thank you," Merlin said.
"I still can't believe you brought Morgana back to the good side. She is a completely different person. How did you get through to her?"
"I can't explain it. There has always been a bond between us."
"I see the way you two look at each other now."
"After everything we have been through…to now have this miracle," Merlin smiled.
"Call it fate or destiny or just plain luck, Merlin…whatever it is you are the stuff of legends. You are truly the best friend I ever had, and I have learned a great deal from you. And Arthur…but don't tell him I said so."
"I won't," Merlin grinned. "I should go check on Morgana."
"I'll be in the tavern with Fiona and my ale if you need me."
"Thanks, Gwaine…" he nodded then went back inside.
Yenna met him halfway on the steps. "Merlin! I was just coming to get you. The babies are coming."
"Now?" he asked his face turning white as a ghost.
"Don't you worry," I have helped deliver every child in the village. Go on in, I will fetch the midwife."
Merlin nodded as he moved aside to let her pass then hurried up the steps. He opened the door not even bothering to close it when he saw Morgana. She was lying on her side reaching out to him.
"Merlin," she gasped, her eyes wide with pain and fear.
"I'm here," Merlin said as he sat on the bed. He put one arm around her gathering her against him while she grabbed hold of his other hand squeezing tightly. "Everything is going to be fine," he smiled kissing the top of her head.
Yenna returned with the midwife and two young girls. They hurried about preparing hot water and towels. "Merlin, lad, you will need to go downstairs."
"Morgana looked at him in desperation, "Merlin?"
"I'm not going anywhere."
Yenna put her hands on Merlin's shoulders. "It's going to be a long night, lad…you should go."
"No," Merlin said.
"Very well," she relented, "You can stay for now, but when Reina says you must go you will go."
"All right," Merlin said, "Thank you."
"Merlin, I don't know if I can do this," Morgana said her body trembling.
"You are Morgana Pendragon," he grinned looking deep into her eyes, "You can do this."
"I don't feel much like her right now," she laughed softly, before her eyes widened, and pain coursed through her body. "Ow!" she cried out her breathing ragged. Her eyes flashed gold for just a moment and Merlin looked around quickly.
"Morgana," he whispered in her ear, "Your magic…"
"I know I feel it," she gasped.
"Can you control it?"
"I'm not sure, the pain it is too much."
Merlin gently rubbed her lower back then kissed her head. "I can give you a spell that will dampen it…make it easier to control."
"Do it, please," Morgana said her eyes beginning to glow again, "I don't want to hurt anyone."
Merlin leaned close incanting the spell under his breath, his own eyes flashing for a moment. He watched as the gold faded from her eyes. "Better?"
"Yes," she nodded quickly.
"When the pains come, I want you to listen to my voice. Focus on me."
"Aren't you scared?" she asked.
"Not at all," he grinned.
"Liar," Morgana said glaring at him as another wave of pain coursed through her.
Six hours later Morgana was drenched in sweat and screaming. Merlin kept wiping her brow and face with a cool cloth as he told her stories from his childhood in Ealdor and anything else that would help her focus.
"Merlin," Reina said, "You should go now. We need room, the babies are coming."
"I want to stay," Merlin said.
"I know you do, dear boy," she smiled patting his arm.
Morgana looked up giving him a nod. "Go…" she whispered.
Merlin kissed her deeply caressing her cheek. "I love you."
"I know," she gasped as her head fell back on the pillows and she cried out again.
"Downstairs," Yenna smiled, "I will come for you do not worry."
"If anything happens…" Merlin said.
"She and the babies are well cared for. I promise."
Merlin moved toward the door. He forced himself to go down the steps. The look on his face brought Gwaine to his feet.
"Is she all right?"
"They made me leave, the babies are coming like now," Merlin said turning in a complete circle as he ran his fingers through his hair.
Gwaine grinned, "You better sit down before I am picking you up off the floor."
"If anything goes wrong…"
"You cannot think that way," Gwaine said pushing him down into a chair and handing him a tankard of ale.
"Arthur," Merlin said.
"I already sent word to Camelot."
"Morgana is in so much pain."
"You know she is strong."
"I know, but she was injured and the fever it weakened her. And the babies have magic; it was their power I felt intermingled with hers. That's why I was having such a tough time focusing on it."
Gwaine looked at him with a raised eyebrow. "So, you really were born with magic and now your children…"
"Yes," Merlin grinned.
"When you said you were born with it, I guess I was thinking it emerged as a baby not literally in the womb."
"Imagine my mother's surprise," Merlin chuckled softly, "At least we know what to expect."
"With two magical parents, how powerful are they going to be?"
"I guess we will find out."
"Good thing they have you for a father," Gwaine smiled taking a drink of ale.
Merlin nodded, "I am really scared."
"Any father would be magic or not."
An hour passed and Merlin leaned back against the wall keeping his eye on the stairs. He got up and started pacing the floor while Gwaine watched.
"Something must be wrong," Merlin said his voice shaky.
"Merlin," Yenna's voice came from the top of the stairs he turned and ran up to her.
"What's wrong?"
"Everything is fine, lad…as I promised."
Merlin walked into the room and rushed to the bed. Morgana's eyes were closed her breathing returning to normal. "Morgana," he whispered.
"Merlin," she smiled brightly, "They are beautiful."
Merlin turned as Yenna approached placing one of the babies, wrapped in a warm blanket, into his arms. Tears filled his eyes as he looked down at the beautiful being.
"Your daughter," Yenna beamed, "She is perfect."
Reina moved to the bed placing the other baby in Morgana's arms. "And here is your handsome boy," she said.
"We have a boy and a girl," Merlin laughed wiping his tears away.
"He looks just like you," Morgana said kissing his little head.
"Are you sure?" he asked leaning over to take a peek, "She looks like you."
Yenna and Reina cleaned up sending the young girls to empty the water. "I will be downstairs if you need anything," Yenna smiled then left the room.
Hearing the sound of boots on the steps, Merlin looked up to see Arthur appear in the doorway.
"Arthur!" he grinned, "How did you get here so fast?"
"I was already on my way back. We met Gwaine's messenger on the road he told us the babies were coming," Arthur smiled approaching the bed then bent down to kiss Morgana's forehead. "Two new Pendragons," he grinned looking down at the babies.
"Do you want to hold him?" Morgana asked.
"Yes," Arthur nodded carefully taking the tiny baby in his arms. "Poor child looks like you, Merlin," he chuckled. "Definitely has your ears."
"See, Merlin, I told you," Morgana laughed.
Gwaine stood in the doorway, leaning against the wall, grinning from ear to ear. "What are their names?"
Merlin and Morgana looked at each other questioningly. "You choose," Morgana said softly.
"What do you think about Balinor after my father and Vivienne after your mother…"
"Perfect," Morgana said tears shining in her eyes.
"They are beautiful," Arthur said placing Balinor back in his mother's arms.
"Come closer, Gwaine," Merlin grinned.
"Babies don't like me," Gwaine said holding his hands out.
"Get over there, you idiot," Arthur said giving his knight a shove.
Gwaine crossed the room slowly. He crouched down in front of Merlin. "They are amazing," he grinned, hesitantly reaching out to touch Vivienne's tiny hand.
"Merlin," Arthur gestured with his hand and his servant got up placing his daughter in Gwaine's arms.
"Merlin, wait…" Gwaine said staring down at the tiny bundle completely at a loss.
"I'll be right back," Merlin grinned, "She won't bite."
"No, but she might accidently turn me into a toad."
"That would be an improvement," Arthur chuckled.
"Your perfectly safe, Gwaine…at least I think so," Merlin said feigning uncertainty that made Gwaine look even more worried.
Arthur laughed then embraced Merlin pressing his hand to the back of his head. "Congratulations, you have a beautiful new family."
"Thank you," Merlin grinned as he released him. "Another real hug?"
"Shut up," the king laughed.
"I am glad you're here."
"Me too," Arthur said, "I brought a wagon loaded with clean straw and blankets so we can transport Morgana and the babies home."
"Thank you, Arthur."
"I figured we could leave tomorrow morning if Morgana is up to it. The weather is turning quickly if we wait too long snow could set in."
"It is definitely getting colder," Merlin nodded watching Morgana with their son and Gwaine finally seemed to relax while holding Vivienne.
"And I though you could use some help," Arthur grinned looking over Merlin's shoulder toward the open door.
Merlin turned quickly to see his mother standing behind him. "Mother!" he laughed embracing her tightly.
"My boy," Hunith said holding his face then she hugged him tightly.
"I was going to send word to Ealdor," Merlin said.
"I sent Leon and Percival to pick her up and bring her to Camelot," Arthur smiled.
"Now where are my beautiful grandchildren?" Hunith asked moving to sit down on the edge of the bed.
"Hunith," Morgana smiled, "It is so good to see you again."
"You too, Lady Morgana." Hunith beamed with pride and love as Gwaine carefully placed Vivienne into her grandmother's loving arms then left the room.
"Please, just Morgana…and that is Vivienne, and this is Balinor," Morgana smiled.
Hunith instantly turned to her son her eyes shining with tears. "Balinor? I didn't know…"
Merlin nodded as he put his hands on her shoulders then crouched next to her. "I met him, Mother. Years ago, but he…" he looked into her eyes, "I didn't have the heart to tell you. I thought it was better that way."
"My boy, I am so sorry. I never should have kept the truth from you."
"I understand why you did. It was to protect me."
Hunith put her hand on Merlin's cheek. "If Balinor is dead, then you inherited his powers…"
"Yes, I am the last Dragonlord," he smiled then looked at his baby son, "And when I am gone, my father's legacy will live on."
"Merlin, he would be so proud of you. Sending you to Camelot was the hardest decision I ever had to make. I wanted to ignore the prophecy and keep you home where you would be safe, but I know now that it was the right decision."
"You knew about the prophecy?" Merlin asked.
Hunith nodded, "One day, weeks after Balinor had gone, I was in the field. Three people came to me…they appeared out of nowhere. They were Druids. They told me that I was with child and that I would have a boy…a son with a great gift and a destiny written in the stars."
"So, when you said that Arthur and I were like two sides of the same coin…"
"I knew even then what the two of you were to become. I couldn't tell you. The Druids said you had to live and learn…to grow and accept the path laid out for you. I am sorry."
"It's all right, Mother…I understand…believe me."
"I know it was difficult for you, the pain and loss…I wish I could have better protected you."
"I love you, Mother…you always did your best and you taught me everything I needed to know to become who I am today," Merlin smiled kissing her forehead.
Hunith turned her attention back to the babies and Morgana. Merlin stood and watched still not quite believing it all.
"Merlin," Arthur said.
"Yeah?" Merlin asked.
"Come outside with me."
Merlin nodded then followed Arthur down the stairs, through the tavern and out into the morning light. They crossed the road to the wagon parked next to the river where the knights had set up camp. Gwaine and Percival were taking turns hopping from stone to stone across the river placing bets on who would get wet first. Arthur rolled his eyes and laughed.
Merlin was tempted to use his magic to put them both on their backsides in the river, but he just laughed.
Arthur reached into the back of the wagon. He pulled out something wrapped in a blanket and placed it on the end of the wagon. "Open it," he grinned.
Merlin looked at him curiously then stepped forward unfolding the blanket. Inside was a coat made of the softest brown leather, lined with sheepskin, and a darker leather collar with fur lining. It was the nicest coat he had ever seen in his life. He looked at Arthur as he ran his hands over the fine stitching.
"Arthur?"
Arthur grinned, "Do you like it?"
"It's beautiful."
"I had it made just for you. Stole one of your ratty old jackets for measurements."
Merlin dropped his gaze to hide the tears in his eyes. "You didn't have to…"
"Merlin, it is the least I could do. Besides, it is getting colder and you're a father now, can't have you getting sick."
"Thank you," Merlin said nodding a big grin on his face his eyes still shining with tears. "Thank you so much."
"There's something else in the blanket," Arthur said.
Merlin folded more of the blanket back and found a matching leather satchel and a belt with a knife in a sheath. "This is too much, Arthur."
"You deserve it. I would have waited until we got home to give them to you, but I thought you should have them for the journey."
"I don't…know what to say," Merlin said softly.
Arthur put his hand on Merlin's shoulder and pulled him into an embrace. "I meant what I said. You are my brother in every way but by blood. I would not be where I am without you. I am only sorry it took me so long to realize that."
"You're trying to make me cry in front of them aren't you," Merlin said motioning toward Gwaine and Percival who were standing there watching as Arthur released him.
"Merlin," Gwaine said, "I am glad the Princess is finally showing you the appreciation you deserve."
"Put it on," Arthur grinned, "Make sure it fits."
Merlin slipped his jacket off then Arthur helped him put the coat on. It fit perfectly and it was very warm. Gwaine whistled and Percival nodded grinning.
"I've never had such a nice coat," Merlin said with a chuckle as he wiped his tears with the back of his hand.
"Come on, let's go get a drink," Gwaine grinned patting Merlin on the back as he gave Arthur a nod of appreciation.
"We'll be right there," Arthur said. He waited until they were out of earshot then put his hands on Merlin's shoulders. He looked his friend in the eyes and smiled. "Are you all right?"
"Yes, just overwhelmed," Merlin said.
"After everything we have been through…Merlin, I almost lost you," Arthur said his own eyes tearing up. "I love you, brother, and I don't want you to ever forget that."
Merlin looked at him, a grin spreading across his face. "I love you too…Clotpole."
Arthur laughed, "Idiot."
"So, you have forgiven me for lying all these years."
"Whatever gave you that idea?" Arthur's smile faded and Merlin looked worried for a moment. "Too easy…every time, Merlin. Come on let's get that drink."
Merlin chuckled grabbing the satchel and the belt before following Arthur inside.
Arthur was up at first light, he and the knights had the wagon ready, and horses saddled. Merlin carried Morgana out placing her in the center of the nest of straw and blankets in the back of the wagon. Yenna and Reina brought the babies out behind them.
"Are you comfortable," Merlin asked Morgana as he adjusted the straw and covered her with several blankets. "Is that going to be warm enough?"
"Merlin, will you stop fussing, I'm fine."
"Are you sure you are up for this? We could wait another day or two."
Morgana grabbed the collar of his coat pulling him close. She kissed him passionately earning them a whistle from Gwaine.
"You know that's how you got the first two," Gwaine teased with a wink.
"Shut up, Gwaine," Arthur chuckled.
"Let's go home," Morgana smiled.
Merlin turned to take Vivienne from Reina placing her in Morgana's arms then Yenna passed Balinor to him. She positioned them in their own little nests wrapped in their blankets with another blanket draped over them. Merlin then hopped from the wagon to the ground he embraced both women as they sobbed.
"Thank you both, we owe you everything," Merlin smiled.
"I will miss you all so very much," Yenna said patting Morgana's legs as she tucked the blankets around her. "I am so happy you are going home with your family. Please, promise you will visit."
"Of course, we will, Yenna," Morgana said with tears in her eyes, "You and Hakon saved my life and the lives of our babies. I will never be able to repay you for your kindness."
Hunith climbed up into the front of the wagon picking up the reins. Merlin wrapped a blanket around her shoulders.
"Mother, are you sure you wouldn't rather ride and let me drive the wagon?"
"Merlin, I have driven wagons since I was sixteen. You ride, I will keep a close watch on your family."
"All right," he grinned kissing her cheek. "Will you be warm enough?"
"Merlin," Morgana said, "Let's go."
"Yes, My Lady," Merlin said kissing her quickly then he hopped off the wagon and climbed into the saddle.
"Yenna, I cannot thank you enough for all you have done," Arthur said then placed a bag of gold in her hands.
"Your Majesty, I cannot take payment for doing what was right."
"I insist," Arthur smiled, "There is enough there to get you all through the winter. If you ever need anything, just send word to Camelot."
"Thank you, Your Majesty," Yenna bowed.
"Goodbye," Arthur said then climbed into the saddle.
Yenna and Reina were joined by Hakon and others from their village to wave goodbye to their guests.
Merlin waved back. "Thank you all again."
"Safe travels, my dears!" Reina called out.
Two hours later, they stopped to rest and ate some of the food the Villagers had packed for their journey. Morgana and the babies slept soundly for most of the way with Merlin riding alongside the wagon keeping close watch.
Back on the road they traveled until early evening. It was getting cold, and the babies were fussing. Merlin and Arthur set up the tent while Gwaine and Percival and the other knights gathered wood and got a large fire going.
Morgana was able to walk to the tent with Merlin helping her. Hunith brought the babies in behind them. It wasn't long before the babies were warm, fed, and sound asleep with their mother.
"Maybe we should have waited another day or two," Merlin said to his mother.
"Merlin, I know you are worried, but they are strong. They are doing just fine."
"I still cannot believe I'm a father," he grinned.
"Of course, it is still new, and you have much to think about, but Merlin, I am so proud of the man you have become. Those children are the luckiest in the world to have you as their father."
"I just don't want to let them down."
"Merlin," Arthur said as he walked up to them. "The only person who doubts you is you. We all believe in you, the least you can do is believe in yourself."
"Thank you, Arthur," Merlin smiled remembering when he had said something similar to him not so long ago.
It was well after dark when everyone bedded down for the night. Only Arthur and Merlin were still up sitting by the fire keeping it going until it was time for Gwaine and Percival to take over watch.
"Merlin, you should get some sleep."
"I'm not tired, just thinking."
"About?"
"The future. Getting married…finding a home for my family."
Arthur grinned, "You don't have to worry about a home. Guinevere is already setting up a wing in the palace for you including a nursery. You, Morgana, your children and Hunith will live there with us for as long as you wish."
Merlin looked at him in surprise. "Arthur, no, that is too much. I can get us a home in the lower town."
"You're forgetting that Morgana is a Pendragon. She has every right to live in the palace with her family."
"I never expected that, Arthur."
"I know," Arthur said, "But things are changing, my friend. You will no longer be just a servant."
"But I want to be your servant. I don't want that to change. It's the best way for me to protect you."
"Merlin, you have a family now. You need more than just a servant's salary."
"I was planning to find another job I can do as well."
Arthur laughed, "Merlin, you will be too busy as my advisor to do much else."
"What?"
"You are going to be my official advisor on all things, especially magic."
"How can I do that? The council will not want me there. Especially now that everyone knows I am a sorcerer.
"You're forgetting one thing."
"What?"
"I'm the king, I can do whatever I want."
Merlin chuckled, "You really want me to be your advisor?"
"You've already been my advisor for years. There is no one I trust more than you."
"True, but what about my servant duties?"
"I see no reason why you cannot continue to do them if you want."
"I told you I am happy to be your servant until the day I die."
"Fine but promise me you will not try to sacrifice your life for mine anymore. I cannot have you running headlong into danger at every turn when you have a family at home."
"That goes for you as well, Arthur."
"Yeah, well…I'm thinking about delegating more to the knights now."
"Good."
"Merlin, I've been wondering, just how did you get through to Morgana? What changed her? Before the Crystal Cave?" Merlin grinned then looked down and Arthur looked at him with a raised eyebrow. "Well?"
"Let's just say her attempt to break me didn't quite go to plan."
"What do you mean?"
"Morgana was angry and bitter…she tried to punish me. She took my magic, so I was powerless. She thought she would take advantage of my weakness and she kissed me forcefully. She didn't quite get the reaction she was looking for."
Arthur wasn't sure how to react to that. He shook his head and smirked. "You're telling me she started out torturing you and ended up…"
Merlin nodded, "Morgana expected me to rebel…to fight her. She was shaken by my reaction. Stormed out of the cell leaving me to deal with my conflicting emotions and my traitorous heart. She returned a few hours later demanding to know what I did to her."
"And things happened…" Arthur said, "I don't need to hear the details," he grinned running his fingers through his dark blonde hair.
"I wanted to hate her, but even after everything she had done I couldn't."
"Because you have always loved her."
Merlin smiled, "From the first moment I saw her."
"When was that?"
"My second day in Camelot, Gaius sent me to her chambers to deliver her sleeping draft. Her door was open she was expecting Gwen, she thought I was her and asked me to hand her a dress while she was behind her dressing screen."
"Awkward," Arthur laughed.
"Very," Merlin chuckled, "Then at the banquet she took my breath away."
"I remember that. She looked stunning. Of course, I didn't know at the time that she was my half-sister."
"It's funny, that day Gwen told me Morgana was destined to be queen, and it ended up with her being queen."
"Things never turn out the way you expect."
"No, they don't," Merlin said looking at Arthur. "Did you ever expect we would end up friends?"
Arthur laughed shaking his head, "No, I didn't."
"You were such an ass," Merlin grinned.
"And you were an idiot, but the bravest idiot I ever met."
"Thank you again, for the coat it's very warm."
"You're welcome."
Arthur's eyes closed for a moment feeling a deep sense of peace and contentment. For the first time in his life, he had everything he could want or need, and he owed it all to the man sitting next to him.
Hearing one of the babies fussing, Merlin smiled. "I better go…" he said.
"Good night, old friend," Arthur smiled.
"Good night, Arthur."
They arrived in Camelot the next afternoon to hordes of cheering people and Guinevere standing in the square with Anna in her arms.
Merlin and Morgana looked at each other then turned to Arthur. "What is this?" Merlin asked him with a crooked grin.
"They wanted to welcome you home…all of you."
"Arthur?" Morgana asked her eyes shining with tears and a tinge of uneasiness.
"This is for you too, sister. You and Merlin together saved Camelot."
"But after everything I did?"
"New beginnings, Morgana," Arthur said as he slid off his horse and embraced his wife and daughter."
Morgana looked at Merlin, "This cannot be for me. You, yes…but not me."
"Like Arthur said…new beginnings," Merlin smiled as he helped Morgana down from the wagon. He held her for a moment pressing his lips to hers. "I love you."
"I love you too," she smiled.
"Here we go, little ones," Hunith said as she handed Balinor and Vivienne over to Morgana then Merlin helped her down. She hooked her arm through her son's and together they followed Arthur up the steps and into the palace.
Three years later…
"Merlin!" Morgana laughed so hard she could barely breathe as she watched her husband and their two dark-haired, blue-eyed children. It was a beautiful summer day, not a single cloud to break up the blue sky. Watching them brought tears to her eyes. As she looked back at how dark and miserable her life had been, to now have everything she ever wanted…light and love. The man she'd once believed was her doom had become her salvation.
"Oh," Morgana gasped as she watched Vivienne wave her hand over a patch of bare ground and it filled with wildflowers and butterflies. Balinor ran straight for the lake, but Merlin scooped him up at the last second.
"No, you don't," Merlin laughed as his son kicked his legs and giggled.
"Papa…I want to swim."
"Not, today…little one."
"Room for three more?" Arthur called out as he and Gwen rode up on horseback. Anna was squirming in front of her father unable to contain her excitement at seeing her cousins. Morgana stood up and reached for her.
"Aunt Gana," Anna squealed hugging her tightly.
"Beautiful Anna, off you go," Morgana laughed setting her down on the ground. She immediately ran to Vivienne to help pick flowers and catch butterflies.
Arthur got off his horse, then helped Gwen down, "My Lady…"
"My Liege," Gwen smiled brightly and kissed him.
"Gwen," Morgana said embracing her friend.
"Morgana, you look beautiful," Arthur said as he hugged her close.
Merlin waved to them from the edge of the lake where he was showing Balinor a toad sitting on a flat rock. "Come on, my boy, it is time to eat." He picked him up setting him on his shoulders.
"Papa, what's that?" Balinor asked, pointing upward.
Merlin looked up surprised to see a familiar dark shape in the sky. "Kilgharrah," he called out. The dragon swooped down and landed in the middle of the meadow. The girls froze, looking at him with huge eyes. "It's all right…he won't hurt you."
Merlin put Balinor down and he ran right up to Kilgharrah with no fear at all, and the dragon lowered his head. "Well, who might you be, little one?"
"Balnor," the little boy giggled.
"A very fitting name, an honorable name."
"Good to see you, my friend," Merlin said.
"You as well, Young Warlock."
"Hello, Kilgharrah," Morgana said as she came up next to Merlin putting her arm through his.
The dragon looked at her for a moment then bowed his head. "Lady Morgana, you kept your promise."
"The path taken on faith leads to peace and happiness," Morgana smiled brightly.
"You are truly wiser than I once believed."
"I had help," she said looking at Merlin.
Arthur approached the dragon while Gwen remained with the girls. "Kilgharrah."
"King Arthur, you and the Warlock have more than lived up to the legends."
"I never had the chance to thank you for what you did to help Camelot."
"It has truly been my honor to have served the Once and Future King and Emrys," Kilgharrah bowed.
"Where have you been?" Merlin asked.
"I have been watching from afar."
Merlin studied the dragon, he looked weary his wings drooping at an odd angle. "Are you all right? Are you sick?"
"I am old, Merlin…very old."
"I can heal you."
"Not even you can stop the passage of time, Merlin. My time on earth is coming to an end."
"No," Merlin said shaking his head slowly, "What will I do without you?"
"You will remember me," Kilgharrah said then with a bow of his head he launched up into the air.
"Goodbye, my friend," Merlin whispered, tears filling his eyes. Morgana wrapped her arms around him holding him close.
Arthur stood watching the dragon disappear and thinking how much his life had changed in such a short time. If his father could see him now, what would he say? Then he shook his head, it didn't matter what Uther would say or think. Camelot was stronger than ever, and the five kingdoms were united under his rule, something that his father could never have accomplished.
Morgana picked up Balinor and walked toward Gwen and the girls. Merlin turned to look at Arthur.
"Are you all right," Arthur asked him.
"I will be. It's just…he's my friend."
"I know," Arthur said.
"I'm surprised you were able to join us today with all your kingly duties," Merlin grinned.
"I wouldn't miss this for anything."
"Let's eat…I'm starving."
"Me too," Arthur grinned, then wrapped his arm around Merlin's neck, tussling his hair.
Merlin elbowed him in the ribs and the play fight ensued as they were attacked by three little ones all of them ending up in a pile on the ground laughing.
Morgana and Gwen looked at each other shaking their heads.
"Some things will never change," Gwen said laughing.
"And I hope they never do," Morgana smiled.
