Prompt from insta once again: Asami as werewolf hunter/CEO and Korra as a werewolf/employee
In Hallow Spirits #2
Korra was in the middle of sorting some files, late in the night specifically, thanks to her coworkers slacking off. Overtime was something she did from time to time and she hated it more than waking up early. Although, the only bright side that came from it was that she was alone and had the entire floor to herself. Meaning… she was free to act however she wanted. From burping out loud to even farting, no one was around to hear her natural noises.
Letting out a yawn, she scratches the back of her head before taking a healthy bite of beef jerky. She mindlessly punches in a series of words before hearing some rummaging. Immediately pausing at that noise, she turns her head to look at the source. Her ears twitch and she tilts her head before staring into the darkness.
"What? No one should still be here…"
After waiting a hot second, she figures it's a figment of her imagination before ignoring it and going back to work. She rips off another piece of jerky with her teeth before shrugging it off and focusing on her paperwork.
"Must be my imagination."
She manages to write up about half a page until a louder bang makes her turn around completely with a frown.
"Or… not."
With a sigh, she unwillingly leaves her work space with eyes burning from exhaustion yet at the same time, was completely wide awake. Given, normal people probably wouldn't have heard it since it was at the opposite of her work space. It's just thanks to her ridiculously good hearing that she could. In fact, her eyesight and even sense of smell was even better than most humans as well.
After all, she was secretly part wolf, meaning she was a werewolf. Most humans don't know about them because they're largely a secret but they're around. Her face finally scrunches in annoyance and she raises her hands up in preparation.
"Don't tell me… it's some theft! Not on my watch… I actually like this company, thank you very much. It's been a while since I've had a stable job."
She began inching towards the sound of the ruckus and the closer it got, the closer she was approaching her boss's office. She frowns even further because her boss had instructed her staff to never approach her door let alone enter unless called for, so this was somewhat nerve-racking. Even so, if there was an intruder, she'd just have to overpower them, that's all.
With that being said, she cracks the door open and immediately smells some blood. Her hand immediately clenches and her eyes adjusted to the darkness. She began making her way in, wondering about the set up of her boss's room.
I really don't get why she has another room in her office… Are two spaces really necessary?
Letting out a soft hum, she deems the first part of her office clear before creeping over to the main door. Behind this door lies the CEO of Future Industries, Asami Sato's work space in it's full glory. At least that's what her coworkers thought. Korra knew that Asami most likely worked in some sort of work shop when she wasn't running her company thanks to the dull smell of oil and lubricant mixed in her scent. Speaking of her scent, it smelled like her. Korra makes a 'really' face before shaking it off and knocking softly.
Why would she be here this late? "Miss Sato…? Is everything alright?" She half whispers and half speaks,
"Who's there?" The indefinitely familiar voice exclaims with surprise or possibly hostility.
Korra raises an eyebrow but chooses not to ponder. "It's me, Korra ma'am. From the fifth department…" she leads, hoping for the best. She heard a distinct grunt and rummaging before hearing a disgruntled response.
"One second."
At least it was her. Korra thought as she waited patiently while tapping her foot. It was better than having an intruder because if that was the case, she'd probably have to write some report rather than stating the simple truth of overtime. A few moments later she heard a drawer slam shut before her boss spoke up again.
"Come in."
Korra scratched the back of her neck before reluctantly reaching for the door knob. "Pardon the intrusion…" Whatever the reason her boss was still here this late in the night was something she didn't want to find out.
The door finally clicked open and to her complete surprise, Asami looked as flawless as usual despite the noise she had heard. Her boss was seated at her desk as if nothing had happened, staring right into her eyes. Korra's lips parted at the sight. She wasn't one to be blatant or gossip but she sure looks beautiful in the moonlight. In fact, she looked stunning with that full moon behind her back. If it weren't for her extensive training, she might've thrown herself at Asami.
"Korra, what are you doing here at this time of day?" Asami asks in an unamused tone as she eyed the clock on her desk, "It's past midnight."
She twitches for some reason. Asami didn't show it but Korra was sure that her boss did not appreciate seeing her at this late in the night. "Sorry boss—"
"Asami."
Her lips thinned out in a line. She never really did get used to calling her boss so casually. Asami was insistent about that for some reason. Something about being close as a team so everyone was on first name bases.
Korra clears her throat before continuing. "Asami… it's just the guys didn't finish the report on time and we needed it done by tomorrow morning. You know how Varrick, or well, Zhu Li is punctual about receiving reports on time."
At that, Asami hums before crossing her hands together. Korra could've sworn that Asami was staring at her right through her soul. Her poker face was not something she was confident in breaking through. Speaking of which, why was she here so late in the day?
"Boss…Asami, why are you still here? I thought you left…" she looks down at her watch, "about five hours ago."
Asami's eyebrow twitched before she smoothly responded. "Oh, it's nothing. I actually forgot an important file here." She raises a flash drive from her desk, "So I was looking for it."
"Ah… I see…" Lies. Korra looks off to the side, discreetly looking around her desk for traces of blood. Why is she hurt?
Raising her hand, Asami gestures towards the door. "Why don't you hurry along and wrap up the report? I'm sure you don't want to stay here till the morning. I'll see myself out once I'm done checking up on some emails while I'm here so you don't have to worry about the greeting."
"Oh… uh yeah sure. Of course," she bows slightly before eyeing the bottom of her desk. Is that a bandage wrap? "Have a great night then Asami."
Asami gives her a cool smile. "You as well Korra."
On that note Korra excuses herself before heading back to her desk. She rubs her nose before glancing back at her boss's office. "What's up with that?"
Ever since that midnight encounter with her boss, Korra swears that Asami is bearing daggers into the back of her head. Of course, every time Korra snapped her head in her direction, Asami would be engrossed in doing something else so maybe it was her imagination? Besides, there wasn't a reason for heat to be thrown at her anyways. She was a productive team member so what complaint could she possibly have?
Days like this, filled with abnormal worry and anxiety passed by again and again and it wasn't until there was a waning gibbous in the night sky that had Korra somewhat shocked. She was downtown at a local bar having a drink and catching up on some news. Word on the street was that this extremely skilled werewolf hunter was taking out wolves left and right. While those who had been taken down were part of the reckless and trouble-making kind, nonetheless, to be taken out by a hunter was quite a feat.
After all, werewolves were tenfold stronger than humans. Meaning whoever they were, they were quite talented and strong.
It even made chills go down Korra's back because whether she'd like to admit it or not, one of the guys that got taken down by that hunter was someone she knew. And, from what she remembered he was quite strong despite his shitty attitude. She always figured he'd have it coming one of these days but not like this.
There were always two types of hunters: the radical ones who mindlessly killed all and any werewolves, friendly or not, and the ones who only killed out of necessity to protect their kind. So, this brought up the question, who was this one? The rumors she had been hearing around said they were probably the latter but one honestly wouldn't know unless they encountered them themself.
Which, was something Korra would rather jump off a cliff than find out.
Thanks to her parents' strict upbringing, not like she would admit it of course, she actually has this small phobia of them. Although, she has had enough training to beat most of her weremates, meaning she was really strong, even so, as hot headed as she could be, she would call herself passive when it came to humans. She didn't want to fight them. Humans were responsible for creating those tacos and curly fries that she was addicted to! Living together in peace and harmony was one of her dreams but that would be impossible thanks to their hidden history.
Letting out a small sigh, she takes another shot of tequila, enjoying that burn traveling through her throat before humming happily. She orders a glass of whiskey on rocks and once she receives it, she swirls the drink in her glass before turning around on her stool. Enjoying the lively atmosphere, she vibes with the music and takes a sip. As her eyes scanned around the bar, they popped open and she choked on her drink, causing a slight scene.
Oh shit, no…
To her dismay, the person she saw notices her. She has a surprised expression and sure enough, she smiles before making her way over. Korra turns around, wiping her mouth and hoping it was just her imagination. There was no way that she'd run into her, her human boss at a bar. A bar that was secretly owned by werewolves, meaning most of the patrons were werewolves. Of course… they all followed strict rules so that their identities wouldn't get uncovered as it would violate many werewolvern rules. Trying to let loose while trying not to uncover your identity was already enough to keep her hands tied so this was too much.
"Korra?"
Way too much.
Korra rubs her face with a quiet groan before smelling Asami's scent behind her back: a nice perfume with a hint of oil grease. She gulps before slowly turning around with a nervous smile, "H-Hey boss…"
Asami gave her a soft smile. "We're not even at work so please, just Asami."
"Right, sorry, Asami…"
She smiles again for nodding her head at the empty seat next to her, "Do you mind?"
I mean a little… "No of course not!" Korra gestures at the seat and neatly cleans up her water mess on the bar counter.
"Thanks." Asami takes a seat before glancing at Korra's drink. "On rocks huh?"
Korra twitches for some reason. "Yup."
Giggling slightly, she gets comfortable. "Hmm, compared to you, I'm a baby. I can't stand the bitter taste." She confesses before resting her chin on her fist.
With a slight shrug, Korra chuckles awkwardly. "Guess I'm used to it."
Asami smiles back before ordering one of the most diluted drinks in the bar, one of the sweetest and fruitiest ones, Turtle Duck. Korra raises a brow at that before holding her tongue. Her boss notices her subtle gesture though before commenting.
"Like I said, I'm a baby. A super lightweight, believe it or not." She reaffirms with a swat of her hand.
Korra found it somewhat unbelievable as she hums in disbelief. "What a surprise, I pegged you for the wine type of gal."
With a blink, Asami chuckles softly before crossing her leg. "I don't usually drink but I kind of wanted something tonight." She pauses to think, "I usually consider it a… occupational hazard."
"Here you go." The bartender interrupts.
Asami gives him a smile before giving her thanks. She takes a small sip before noticing Korra's expression. "What? Is it that unusual?"
Closing her mouth, Korra finally has the nerve to talk. That and the fact that the alcohol was finally kicking in. "Nah, I wouldn't say I'm too surprised actually. You do have that faint smell of oil and steel on you so it makes sense. Wouldn't want to work on machinery under the influence."
Now that comment makes Asami raise a brow. "Do I smell?" She sniffs herself, "Here I thought a shower and some perfume would work. Maybe I should soap up twice."
"Oh!" She raises her hands, "Sorry that's not what I meant! You don't smell bad, good actually, I just… have a better sense of smell than most so don't worry. You totally don't smell like oil and grease!"
Asami gives her a skeptical look but folds nonetheless. "I guess if you insist… I'll take your word on it then." She sips more of her drink.
"..."
"..."
Not knowing what to do, Korra sips her drink as well. Then, just as awkwardly Asami had come, the two of them said their goodbyes after their drinks were finished. Asami excused herself first and left the bar with Korra waving awkwardly at her boss. Once she was out of her sight, she started scratching the back of her neck.
"Talk about awkward…" she sighs again before making her way home and mumbling to herself. "Why is she at this bar? Most humans tend to not like it as much as the one across the street…" she glances over to the raving bar, filled with partying humans. "She's… not on to me is she? No… of course not, why in the world would she be, heh." With a shrug of her shoulders, she walked home in the busy night life of Republic City.
xXx
It's been a few nights since their encounter at the bar and Korra was in the middle of enjoying a midnight stroll. No matter how tired she felt or how much she wanted to sleep, nights filled with the full moon always had her up and about. Tonight was no exception and thankfully, she wasn't cooped up at work like the last time.
Speaking of which, that reminded her of her encounter with Asami. She's been thinking about it for a while now and her inner werewolf senses were tingling. Was it really a coincidence? That time at the bar too. She's been working with this company for a little over a year now so why now of all times are these coincidences lining up? She learned how to identify a hunter but even so, she couldn't picture Asami being one.
There was no way that someone like her has taken a life.
Right?
But then again, Korra didn't know her on a personal level. All she saw was her professional side. She didn't even know what her favorite type of food was let alone something outlandish like this. But then again, from what she learned from the academy, hunters acted like most humans.
They were humans after all.
It was difficult to identify them thanks to that. She grumbled to herself in deep thought until a loud crash caught her attention. She turns to the source before focusing on the noise that was coming from that direction. Her ears twitch when she hears something peculiar.
"Isn't that…"
A faint growl sounds off before more crashing noises sound off.
"Kai?"
Feeling a chill go down her spine, Korra quickly goes into an all out sprint. She ran through an alleyway, up a dumpster before scaling the fire hazard stairs on the side of the building. Taking this shortcut through the roof top, she ran and leaped across a few buildings before finally reaching her destination. She looked down at the scene and what she saw was this.
One of her good friend's Kai, a fellow werewolf, was fighting with some stranger. If Korra had to guess, it had to be some hunter and a skilled one at that. Kai narrowly dodges a knife before jumping back repeatedly. He was clearly on the defense and knowing him, he probably didn't fight back. That's because just like Korra, he wanted to coexist with humans because the truth was, he was dating one. He loved them just as much as Korra so this must've put him in a huge predicament.
"Kai!" Korra shouts when he tripped and got wounded in the arm. "Fuck…"
Making quick work, she pulls her hoodie over her head and ties it tightly before climbing down low enough to jump on the hunter just right when he was going for the finishing blow. "Kai!"
Kai winces in pain before noticing his friend with a bright smile. "Kor!"
Korra grunts as the hunter resists her hold before running her back into the wall. Upon impact, Korra coughed at the hard slam before using the wall to her advantage and kicked them forward. They stumble before Korra rushes to her friend's side. "You good buddy?"
"Yeah…" he grunts before accepting her hand and getting up. "Thanks."
They exchange a fist bump before Korra turns her attention to the hunter. It was a largely built man and he was clearly out for blood.
"The heck is this situation?"
Kai shrunk a little. "Sorry… I got a little careless and he found out."
Humming in understanding, Korra could have guessed the gist of the situation. "I'll distract him and you make a run for it."
"What!" He didn't like the sound of that. "But Kor, he's tougher than he looks!"
"And you're hurt." She affirms with conviction. "You're only a liability at this point so hurry up and go. I'll make a run for it when I get the chance."
"But—"
"No buts. Just go."
Kai grits his teeth before closing his eyes and pivots around. "I'll make it up to you! Promise!" He looks at Korra, needing her to confirm that he'd see her around again.
Korra gives him a soft smile before responding. "Promise."
With his fist clenched, Kai willed himself to follow Korra's orders and he snaps his head around before running away, holding Korra for her word. As he did so, Korra played with this hunter in close quarter combat. She dodges the area of his blade again and again before finally jumping back slightly. She had a serious expression with her hands raised up close to her chest.
"Are you the bastard that's been taking out wolves?"
He didn't respond.
Clicking her tongue, Korra lunged forward, throwing some of her heavy punches as well. "Didn't you know." She threw an uppercut before throwing in a series of punches. "We have a peace pact." Dropping low to the floor, she swipes her legs at his feet which he smoothly dodges. She continues with an annoyed voice. "No blood shall be shed so long as no blood has been spilled."
He simply stood his guard.
"Meaning…" Korra grit her teeth, "You shouldn't go and provoke us!" With a low growl, Korra throws a straight punch which he blocks but nevertheless, gets knocked back thanks to the force.
He grunts before getting back up on his feet. He makes eye contact with Korra before smirking and speaks for the first time. "You're through."
Korra tenses her muscles. "And what's that supposed to mean?" Her question was quickly answered when the wind blew forward from behind. Her eyes widened upon registering that familiar scent that she didn't hate. The smell of grease and light perfume.
"Asami, help me out! This werewolf has gone feral."
The hairs on her body stood up.
Korra could hear and feel that Asami was bracing herself to take her down. She turns slightly, maybe, just maybe she could convince her boss to let her escape somehow? But before she could even let out a single word, the hunter in front of her lunges forward, kicking her straight in the gut.
She coughs at the heavy blow before getting knocked back. Barely turning around and laying eyes on his comrade, Korra confirmed her suspicions. It was Asami alright. She may have had her face hidden but Korra wouldn't mistake her vibrant light green eyes even if she wanted to.
She grunts before quickly ducking the hunter's series of attacks before feeling a blow coming at her from behind. The moment she turns her head slightly, she barely manages to dodge Asami's kick before falling back. Asami immediately closes their distance and quickly throws a series of punches, making Korra go on the defense.
It was then that Korra immediately knew that she was at a disadvantage.
Fuck, why is she so fast and strong? Korra gritted her teeth in pain when Asami connected her fist with the side of her rib cage. She lets out a pain grunt before falling down to the ground. She watched as Asami closed up on her with that knife in her hand. She raises it high in the sky before bringing it down. Fuck—I'm sorry Kai, I'm gonna die. Her mouth opened but before she knew it, she had shouted:
"He broke the peace pact!"
That causes Asami to come to a sudden halt, a few inches from narrowly cutting into her neck. "What?" Her voice softly expresses before her eyes narrowed in anger. She turns around before facing her apparent partner. "What's the meaning of this Lance?"
The hunter known as Lance simply shrugs. "Hey, she fought back so to my defense, it's all fair in blood and war. Self defense, sweet cheeks."
Asami simply scowled with a sigh before retracting her blade. "So you were the one violating the peace pact." She faces him with a wary stance. "The organization forbids unnecessary bloodshed unless inevitable. You know that."
Lance tsked out loud. "And you're as inflexible as ever. Just admit it, werewolves and humans will never coexist. That is why hunters like us exist." He bows as if he was mocking the werewolf and his comrade. "There's no harm in simply acting out our duties. It just means one less wolf to kill in the future."
Turning to make eye contact with the werewolf, Asami stares into her eyes as if she knew it was Korra beneath that hoodie. Shortly enough, she turns to face Lance. "We were trained to protect our kind in unavoidable cases. Not to hunt them down for no apparent reason. Do you really think that I, of all people will let you walk away with that?"
He rolls his eyes. "Ah yes, the classic goody too shoo of a Sato. I knew your clan was filled with wussies." He raises his blade at his comrade. "Maybe it's time to settle this once and for all sweet thing."
Asami sighs before bracing herself as well. "I've told you before… don't call me that." Her voice sounded cold before she lunged forward, throwing the first strike.
Meanwhile, as they fought each other, Korra was still on the floor speechless about what she just learned. She wasn't sure where to react. The fact that her boss, Asami Sato, was a hunter or the fact that they were fighting amongst themselves. Either way, it was a great chance for her to run away. She stands up and watches them carefully as she slowly steps back.
If this wasn't a life or death situation, Korra would say this was an amazing fight of skill and experience but for some reason, she had this feeling that Asami was in trouble. She kept close and shifted into her partial transformation. It didn't take long for her suspicions to be correct. Out of nowhere, Lance pulls out his secret weapon, an automatic pistol and a flashy one at that, it was painted bright white.
"You're gonna regret messing with me Sato."
Asami simply gritted her teeth. "Not if I end you first."
He smirks before shooting away. Asami manages to dodge the first few shots as she closes the distance between them but, to her surprise, he pulls out a tall canister. Korra didn't know what it was until he used it on her.
It was pepper spray.
Asami immediately grunts in pain before being unable to defend herself and gets shot in the abdomen. Korra shouts her name before rushing over and tackling Lance. It seemed like he forgot about her so he seemed surprised upon impact.
With her boss bleeding on the floor, Korra quickly knocks him out with a hard punch to the face, giving him a concussion, before swiftly turning her attention to her superior.
"Asami!"
She crouched down by her side.
"Asami are you okay! Hang in there, Asami!"
Asami groans before coughing slightly. She winces when Korra braces her wound with her hand before trying to open her eyes. She groans softly before fading out. Blood continued to rupture her abdomen and time was ticking.
"Asami! Shit…"
Korra thought quickly and hard before deciding to scoop her up and take her to a place she knows. She figured that hospitals would be a no-no so a werewolf acquaintance had to do.
"Hang in there… I'll save you."
xXx
"What were you thinking bringing a hunter here!" A feminine yet husky voice yells.
"I didn't have a choice! She got shot because of me so of course I had to help her!"
Asami faintly registers a familiar yet distant voice arguing with someone. She breathes some shallow breaths before grunting and falling back into darkness.
"Way a go you dolt! If we get caught, it's your fault!"
"We'll be fine Kuv, she's basically unconscious and I'll take her back to her place once we're done."
"Wait what? How would you… you know her! That's even worse Kor, if word gets out, you're so dead!"
"It's fine. You just keep your mouth shut and I keep mine shut. End of story."
The other voice sighs before shuffling around. "Fine… let's just hurry and get this over with."
xXx
Nervously tapping her foot under her work desk, Korra felt like she was sweating bullets as she waited for her boss to show up. From what she was aware of from last night, the wound itself wasn't actually that bad. They patched her with ease and the only catch was that Korra had broken into her home and placed her gently in her bed. And last time she checked, Asami's vitals were fine and she was passed out cold.
With that being said, Korra was worried sick since humans were fragile. What would happen if she didn't wake up! Did her wounds somehow get worse or did she break out into a fever? Maybe she shouldn't have left her boss like that but then again, her secret would be busted if she did. The longer she hung around Asami, the higher chance her true self would be exposed if it hasn't already. Hunters were scary as shit so who knew if she'll have some vendetta against her later.
Since she was a hunter, that meant she was capable and smart beyond just running a successful company. Speaking of which, damn was that unexpected. Who would've thought her boss was a hunter… that makes her dangerous… and hot.
Korra snapped her eyes open from that thought.
What? No! Hunters are scary. They hunt people like me…
"Good morning Miss Asami." An employee greets.
"Good morning Asami!"
Korra tenses up stiff like a board. She snaps her eyes in her direction and what she saw was this: Asami Sato was waking in head held high as usual as if nothing ever happened. If Korra didn't know any better, she would've never guessed that she had a gunshot wound beneath that crimson blouse she was wearing.
"Good morning everyone."
Asami starts making her morning rounds before eventually making eye contact with her next door neighbor. She gives them a smile and nod before her eyes lay upon Korra. She walks past her before stopping short one step behind her. She looks over at her face before leaning in to whisper.
"Korra, I'd like to see you in my office please."
She had to suppress a whimper. Korra gulps before managing to glance at those vibrant eyes. "Y-Yes ma'am."
Asami smiles before patting her shoulder and heading towards her office. When the door finally shuts behind her back, Korra lets out a breath that she didn't know she was holding.
"Shit… I'm screwed."
