"Yeah, he told us that the Mayor is now Invincible and will stay that way until after his Ascension. Finch also said that it is going to happen on Graduation Day, after that he ran away and said he was getting the hell out of town." Harry told Giles as Faith was cuddled up to his side. Harry and Faith already know all about the Mayor's plan and how they are going to kill him, but the others don't know that.
Giles pulled off his glasses to clean them and put them back on when Jenny spoke up. "The Mayor always gives a speech at the graduation ceremony." Jenny told the group while she was sitting next to Xander and resting her head on his shoulder as his hand was rubbing the exposed skin of her arm.
"Which means in typical bad guy fashion he will probably go through his Ascension right after his speech. "A ward is a magical wall of sorts that can have spells and other effects layered into it, think of a huge soap bubble surrounding the town of Sunnydale. Now anyone and anything inside that bubble can be affected by the magic woven into the ward at all times, and anyone crossing that wall can be affected by specific effects. Like crossing the wall when you leave suppresses your knowledge of just how strange the town is and instead makes you think it's a nice quiet place to live. It would be easy to make a ward that targets people's perception of what goes on in this town, even I could do that now but nowhere near as big as the Mayor did. When it is proven to you without a doubt that something is wrong in this town it can end up keying you into the ward so it stops affecting you. I bet the Mayor designing that auto key in feature was on purpose, otherwise, he would have to do it for everyone himself. As for why it's bad when we kill him, that is because that ward will drop as in the bubble being popped once he is dead with him being the ward master and caster. I just don't know how he is powering the thing though because to keep a ward up that size all the time would be a very heavy drain on his magical power reserves. Think of all the electricity used in this town type of power drain, and only Harry has the magical power capacity and regeneration needed to actually keep the thing up without any negative effects." "I'm familiar with Ley Lines in general but there are none that run under Sunnydale though." Giles told Harry not understanding where he is going with this.

As Harry tells her many times, when it comes to magic, thinking outside of the box is a must. "The Hellmouth, he linked the ward to the Hellmouth to power it. "Very good Dawn you put it together. While there are no Ley Lines under the city, Hellmouth itself is still a powerful source of dimensional energy that can be used to power magical effects." Harry told his young student congratulating her on putting the pieces together.
"Yes of course that does make sense. Harry will you be able to put the ward back up if we can kill the Mayor?" Giles asked. None of those in the room missed how much stress and worry Giles had when he said 'If we can kill the Mayor'.
"Yes I could but I wouldn't want to put it back up though." Harry replied to Giles.
"Why wouldn't you want to put it back up, isn't it a good thing keeping people ignorant of what really happens in this town?" Willow asked the room as she looked around at them.
"No, it isn't, because that magical bubble is what keeps people in this town providing a large food source for the vampires and demons in a place they don't need to be careful in." Xander told Willow because he understood why Harry wouldn't want it put back up.
"Xander is right. Once the Mayor is gone we are going to have to keep a closer eye out on the new people in town and look for suspicious behavior as well. Now Giles care to share with the group why you think us killing the Mayor is doomed to fail?" Harry said to confirm what Xander said was true and then posed his question to Giles.
Giles took off his glasses to clean them before speaking. "It took the Council a day to get back to me, an Ascension is when someone becomes a True Demon." Giles told the room what an Ascension is and most heard the stressing tone when he said the last part.
"We have killed demons before so it's no big deal." Buffy said to Giles, not understanding why he thought it was hopeless.
"Well, shit that isn't good news." Harry said shortly after Buffy spoke up and all could hear the worry in his voice. He wasn't worried but he had to play the part.
"Fuck." Faith said the same time Harry spoke for the same reasons as her lover.
"Um what exactly is a True Demon, because I heard the emphasis on the word True, and both Harry and Faith look like the world is about to end." Xander asked while looking at Giles, he had a feeling it wasn't going to be good news.
"The demons we have faced so far are just mere shadows of their former selves and what a True Demon is. In fact, it took the power of all four elementals who fought with the first men and the first Slayer just to kill a True Demon. Only the four elementals working together were able to kill one, the first men and Slayer were powerless against it." Giles told the group what a True Demon is and why killing the Mayor is going to be impossible.
"Xander, a True Demon would give Godzilla a run for his money." Harry told Xander in words that he and the others would understand.
"Well fuck, so should we get the hell out of Sunnydale then?" Willow spoke up because she even understood what Harry meant with the Godzilla comment.
"No that will be pointless because I doubt the Mayor plans on staying in Sunnydale after he cleans out the all you can eat buffet that he made the town into." Faith told Willow with a firm tone of voice.
"We will have to think of something. But it would help if we knew what True Demon the Mayor was going to become so we might discover a weakness or an effective battle strategy against it." Giles said to everyone after cleaning his glasses.
"I'm sure we can think of something, but for now let's go train, and maybe the Council will come up with something." Faith told the room as she stood up and walked towards Buffy with Harry.
