Summer was coming to a close. The long awaited arrival to Hogwarts for Hermione's fifth year was just around the corner. She had enjoyed the holiday, but was eager to get back to Hogwarts. She wanted to see Harry and Ron again. Wanted for classes to start again.
During the summer she had spent time with her mother and father. Sending letters to Ron and Harry. She never once got a reply so she never knew if they had received them. She knew that if Ron got a letter he would just put off writing back until it was too late. As for Harry, she was unsure why she hadn't gotten a letter back. He was always complaining about how she didn't send letters to him over the summer.
It was the night before she had to get to the Hogwarts Express. She tossed and turned in bed. She was too excited to sleep. She lay awake in bed for about three hours until she finally got some sleep. As she went to sleep a large flash appeared. Fire was surrounding her. Her eyes widened in shock and she began to run through the inferno. Finally she got out of the heat of the fire and looked around. A large figure was emerging from the inferno. It was a tall, pale man. He was wearing a black overcoat. She had not recognized him, but he struck fear in to her. "You filthy mudblood." He uttered drawing his wand and pointing it at Hermione. She tried to run. She tried to scream. But something was holding her feet firmly to the ground. Her voice suddenly escaped from her and she stood in shock. "Avada." the man began to say the killing curse before a young boy ran over. Hermione looked at the person. It was Harry.
She jumped up in bed her eyes wide in shock. The sun was rising over the horizon giving Hermione's room an orange glow. Her mouth was dry. She was sweating like a pig. She never had a nightmare like that. It was so real. Her body shivered in fear of remembering the dream. She took her feet from out of the covers and put on some slippers running to the kitchen and getting herself a glass of water. After she was feeling better so took a shower and dressed quickly. She dragged all of her luggage to the front door as her parents shuffled around the house preparing to leave.
Harry was sprinting through the train station pulling his luggage along behind him. He was late, and was running as fast as he could to get to the platform in time. He soon got to the third pillar of platform 9 and ran through it seeing to his joy the train sitting at the station. The last few students were shuffling on board. Harry got on board and walked down the train car until he found Hermione and Ron sitting together in one of the cabins. They both smiled to Harry as he entered the cabin.
"Hello Harry," Hermione greeted him and stood up and hugged him.
"Hello Hermione. Hello Ron," Harry said getting his greetings out of the way.
Ron only nodded to Harry. He was busy shoving his mouthful of candy. The trolley cart hadn't come around yet, so Ron must have brought his own stash of candy. Harry took a seat across from Ron and Hermione next to the window.
"How was your summer Harry?" Hermione inquired.
"It was very good. How was yours Hermione?"
"Wonderful. But I sent you both letters and I never got a reply. Why is that?" She asked looking to the both of them. Ron's face went to a face of shock. Hermione rolled her eyes figuring that he just put it off. Her eyes then went over to Harry who was confused.
"You sent me a letter? I never got any letters."
"Yes. I sent you about four over the summer. You never received them?"
"No I didn't. I'm sorry. I would have written back if I got your letters. I'm sorry Hermione."
"Don't be. It's not your fault. But Ronald, why didn't you reply to my letter?" she asked her eyes darting back over to Ron. He stopped chewing his candy quivering a little in fear. He gulped down the candy he had shoved in to his mouth.
"I guess I just forgot Hermione. I'm sorry," Ron said hoping she would forgive him.
"It's okay Ron. Just promise me next summer you'll actually write back."
"Alright. I promise," Ron said with a sigh of relief. He was off the hook. He then shoved more candy in to his mouth making Hermione make a grunt of disgust. She shook her head and looked over to Harry with a small smile.
The train began to leave the station. Harry watched the station disappear and the long journey to Hogwarts began. After looking at the scenery for a little while he leaned his head back on the seat and sighed. Hermione dug out a book to read. Ron continued to shovel down his candy that he had before the trolley cart came. Hermione stared at her book, but she wasn't reading. The dream was playing in her head. A shiver of fear came over her when she saw the figure emerge from the flame.
The trolley cart came and Ron dashed out and looked at all of the candy. Harry went to stand up when Hermione put her hand on his arm. He looked over at her curiously.
"Harry. Can I talk to you for a minute," she said wanting just a minute alone. This would be the only time on the trip she would be able to talk to him about it without Ron nosing in.
"Sure thing. What is it Hermione?" Harry asked taking his seat back across from her.
She sighed letting her mouth hang open slightly just for a moment. She then leaned in and whispered," Last night…I had a nightmare that I was in the middle of a…Fire…Then a man came and was going to use the killing curse on me, until you came. Then I woke up."
"What did the man look like?"
"He was tall, thin, sort of gray skin. A bald head," she continued to list before Harry's eyes grew wide.
"That's!" he began to exclaim before lowering his voice so neither Ron or the trolley cart woman heard. "Voldemort."
The trolley cart continued its journey down the cart. Ron came back inside the cabin with another pocket full of candy. Hermione looked to Harry for the moment. He nodded at her. Without saying a word he told her they would talk about it later. Hermione brought her book back out and stared at it. Occasionally glancing up to Harry. He was deep in thought looking out the window.
After a several hour ride they made it to Hogwarts. Ron jumped up from his seat stuffing candy wrappers and boxes in his pockets.
"Bout time we made it here. I can't stand these long train rides," he moaned as he stretched and opened the door to the cabin.
"We know Ron. You say that every time," Harry said standing from his seat.
"Well I would hate to break from tradition," he chuckled.
Harry and Hermione both managed a small laugh, but both of their minds were else where. Thinking of Hermione's dream. Harry worrying of what may be awaiting them this year at Hogwarts. Harry took a deep breath as he slowly got out of the cabin and headed off the train with the many other students of Hogwarts.
Dinner had been great as usual. Harry was glad to see everyone, but his mind the whole time was still thinking about Hermione's dream. "What would he want with her?" he continued to ask himself as he lay in his bed staring out the window. The moon was high in the sky and casting a ghostly white light in to Harry's room.
Every time Harry tried to fall asleep he would begin to think about why Voldemort would be trying to get in to Hermione's head. When he began to think of it all he would stay awake. He tossed and turned for about two hours before he decided it was enough. He threw some clothes on and slowly sneaked down to the common room. He saw a red flare across the wall. Someone had started a fire in the fireplace. Harry slowly made his way down and saw that it was Hermione sitting in front of the fire deep in thought.
Harry slowly walked towards the couch. Hermione didn't even seem to notice.
"Hermione…" Harry said making Hermione jump.
Hermione laughed. "Oh Harry! I didn't see you there."
"I couldn't get to sleep so I decided I'd come down to the common room. Why are you still up?" Harry asked taking a seat next to her on the couch.
"Every time I close my eyes I have a flash of the dream. And I fear that I will have another nightmare. So I came down here to just think…" she said looking over at Harry.
"I'm still confused as to why Voldemort would want to invade your mind. It doesn't make any sense. Why is he doing it to you?"
Hermione didn't know what to say. She just shrugged and then looked over to the fire. Her eyelids began to sink. No matter how hard she tried to keep them open, they continued to sink. Soon Hermione's eyes were closed and she was asleep. She leaned her head over on Harry's shoulder and slept. Harry looked over to her sleeping peacefully and smiled at her. His eyes traveled back over to the fireplace. This was a good moment for Harry. He secretly had liked Hermione for some time now. But he knew that Hermione and Ron had some feelings for each other. He decided it might be for the best that he just leave it alone. After making that decision she was all he could think about. Now with the dark lord entering her mind, it may be Harry's fault. Voldemort most likely knows of his feelings for Hermione and is going to use it against him. Harry was feeling guilty about it all, and hoped that this scenario was not the case.
Harry looked back over to Hermione who was still sleeping peacefully. He kissed the top of her head and smiled. "Goodnight Hermione."
Harry was soon asleep too. Just when Harry fell asleep Hermione spoke from her slumber. "Goodnight Harry." She said as the fire began to die in the fireplace.
Hermione soon began to dream. It was the same dream. Her muscles tightened, and her teeth clenched together. Harry soon ran in when Voldemort began to say the killing spell. But this time the dream didn't end. Voldemort quit uttering the curse and glared at Harry. "Hermione you have to get out of here!" Harry shouted grabbing Hermione's arm. "Not without you." Hermione managed to whisper to Harry. "No Hermione! I am the only one that can stop him! You have to get out of here!" Harry shouted pointing his wand at Voldemort. "I can't leave without you." She said grabbing Harry's arm. "Hermione! I love you too much to let you stay here! You have to leave now!" Hermione froze for a moment at what Harry said. "Enough of this! Avada…"
Hermione woke up shouting "Harry!" and clenching his shirt. Harry woke up startled by Hermione. Hermione looked up to Harry who was staring down at her confused and shocked.
"What's the matter Hermione? What happened?"
"I had another nightmare…It was the same one, but this one was longer then the last."
Hermione sat up trying to remember the entire dream. Harry looked in to her eyes eager to hear what had happened.
"What happened? In the dream?"
Hermione then remembered when Harry said he loved her. She looked in to Harry's eyes and shook her head.
"Nothing happened Harry," she whispered.
"What? But you said it was longer right."
"Yes I did, but nothing happened."
Harry decided to leave it for now, even though his curiosity was building about the dream. What was Hermione not telling him? Why was she not telling him? Hermione looked over to Harry and then out the window. The sun was just starting to rise.
"Maybe we should go to our rooms Harry…"
"Yea I think we should. I'll see you down at breakfast."
"Alright," Hermione said standing up and heading for the girl's dorm. Harry reached out and put a hand on her shoulder.
"Are you going to be alright?"
"I'll be fine Harry," she assured him before she continued to her room.
Harry took his hand back to his side and turned around and slowly went to his room. Now he was more puzzled then ever. Hermione was hiding something from him and he didn't have a clue why. As he moved in to his room he slipped in to his bed without making a sound. Ron's snore was echoing through out the boy's dorm allowing Harry to make it to his bed undetected. .
Hermione moved in to her bed and stared out the window. The dream playing over in her mind. One part in particular. "Hermione! I love you too much to let you stay here! You have to leave now!" Hermione shook her head feeling stupid.
"It's just a dream Hermione," she told herself. "It's just a dream…" Hermione then thought to herself. "Is it a dream?"
Ron began to toss and turn and was soon awake. He saw Harry was up and let out a large yawn.
"Where were you? I woke up and you weren't in here."
"I was downstairs in the common room. I couldn't get to sleep so I just decided to get up."
"Oh…" Ron uttered before he soon was falling back to sleep. Harry laughed to himself. Once he heard other kids getting up he retreated back down to the common room and sat down on the couch. Ron was soon downstairs and they began to head down to breakfast. As Ron talked to Harry about a dream he had that involved Fleur, Harry was thinking about Hermione and why she acted so weird after the dream. Soon they were down in the Great Hall beginning to eat breakfast. Harry had put some food on his plate, but stared at the entrance waiting for Hermione. Ron was already stuffing his face full of food. Soon Harry saw Hermione slowly walk in to the Great Hall and head over to the Gryffindor table. She took a seat next to Harry.
"Hermione. What happened in your dream?"
"Nothing Harry," she whispered to him putting a napkin in her lap.
"Why can't you tell me?"
"I just can't. Alright?" Hermione stated firmly looking over to Harry from the corner of her eye.
"Did you die? Did I die? What happened?"
"Harry please stop," Hermione pleaded. She didn't want to think about it anymore. It was too much for her.
Harry sighed and went to eating his food. Hermione thought about the dream as she played with her food. Pushing her eggs from one side of the plate to the other. "Hermione! I love you too much to let you stay here! You have to leave now!"
Hermione suddenly stood up and left the Great Hall. Harry began to stand, but then understood she wanted to be alone. Ron raised an eyebrow to Hermione as she left.
"What's up with her?"
Harry didn't answer. He just continued to eat his breakfast. Ron looked over to Harry then puzzled by him as well. Ron hated to be out of the loop. Which most of the time he found himself out of.
"Harry. Is everything okay?" Ron inquired.
Harry looked up from his plate to Ron and slowly nodded. "Yes…Everything is fine. Don't worry."
Ron had known Harry for a while now and he could tell when he was lying. This was one of those times. Ron decided that he would learn what is happening eventually and just began to eat again.
Harry finished his food that he had on his plate and without saying a word also stood up from his seat. Ron watched Harry walk away. As his eyes followed Harry, Seamus moved closer to Ron.
"Ron. What is going on with Harry and Hermione? Are they having problems?" Seamus asked arching his right eyebrow slightly.
Ron turned around to Seamus and shook his head. "No. I don't have a clue."
Neville looked over to Ron and Seamus and leaned over. "You know Ron, I saw them last night. Down in the common room. I woke up early and saw them sleeping together. On the couch…"
Ron looked over to Neville in a bit of shock for a moment. He knew that Harry knew Ron had feelings for Hermione. Harry always told him that he thought Hermione liked him. But did Hermione really like Harry.
"You don't think…" Seamus uttered looking back to Ron.
Ron stopped speaking and just began to eat again. Neville leaned back over to his seat and as did Seamus. Ron still had some food remaining on his plate, but he couldn't finish his food. He jumped up from his seat and stormed out of the Great Hall in a state of fury. He didn't like what he heard. Why would Harry betray him like this? Ron didn't like how he was out of the loop this time more then ever before.
Classes were soon going to start and Hermione didn't want to be late. She stood up from the toilet she was sitting on in the girl's bathroom. It seemed to be the only place that she ever could be alone. Alone to just be able to think to herself without interruption.
She opened the door to the stall she had been thinking in and slowly walked out of the girl's bathroom. She made her way to the first class of the school year. Herbology was her first class of the day. She made her way to the class slowly. As she walked along she looked to the right of her and she saw Harry.
Harry wasn't paying attention and didn't see Hermione. Hermione hurried along hoping to not be seen by him. 'Wow Hermione. You now are avoiding one of your best friends.' No matter how wrong it felt, she just felt to weird right now. And she knew Harry just would have more questions for her. Questions are not what she wanted to deal with right now.
