May or may not be continued. Enjoy!
Lily wandered back and forth on the sidewalk in front of the apartment building, nervously clutching at the manilla folder in her hands. Its contents were possibly life changing and had cost way too much money to just turn back and pretend she'd never read it. There was a small part of her that was guilty for using her power as a B Class Hero to pressure the Hero Registration Office to get her the address and she knew that, if the person inside really wanted it, she could be arrested or fined an exorbitant amount. That was why she hadn't told Miss Blizzard or the rest of the Group about her plans. They would have come with her, if she'd asked, if only for moral support—Miss Blizzard might even have helped to pay for it, but Lily didn't dare impose like that! So, Lily was standing outside the building, nervously debating whether or not she should enter.
Finally, she steeled her nerves enough to press the button for the apartment listed on the rumpled paperwork. For a moment, she hoped he wouldn't be home. She'd have an excuse, then. Shame filled her at her cowardice. Why was she so afraid? She as a B Class Hero at the age of 14! How many other people out there could say that? She'd fought plenty of Monsters with the rest of the Blizzard Group, and even on her own! Meeting one man shouldn't be so terrifying.
It was, though. When a deep voice came through the tinny speaker, she stiffened bodily, terror gripping her from the inside. What if he hated her? What if the reason she had to hunt him down like this was he didn't want to be found? What if he pressed charges for invasion of privacy and all the work she put into being a Hero went down the drain in a single instant?
"Hello?" She came back to herself with a start. "Is this the delivery?"
"U-um," she said hesitantly, too busy trying to find the right words to realize the voice felt way too familiar. "I-I have something for you from the A-Association."
He was a Hero. The fact that his DNA was on file with the Registration Office, in the first place. If he was a low ranking Hero, then he would jump at the chance to receive something from the Association and, maybe, hopefully, having a B Class daughter would be a nice surprise.
"Geeze," the voice on the other end sighed. "What do those guys want now? Come on up, I guess."
Oh no. To have that kind of attitude toward the Association, he must be at least an A Class!
Lily nervously stepped into the building, the door unlocked by the unwitting Hero several floors above. After pressing the right button, she leaned against the back of the elevator, worrying at her bottom lip and trying valiantly to keep up her courage. Worst case scenario, he didn't want her. That was fine. Really. It wasn't like she'd ever had a father before, anyway. She was being selfish by going this far to meet him, she knew, so she really couldn't expect him to just open his door to her, no questions asked. She had to be satisfied with knowing his face.
By the time the elevator came to a stop, she had thoroughly squashed her hopes into something more reasonable, but her heart was still fluttering against her ribcage as she walked down the hall. With every door she passed, her knees felt weaker. There was no way this man would be scarier than a Monster, right? She'd met a lot of scary humans, too! Even if he was an A Class, he couldn't possibly be scarier than S Class Genos! He probably hadn't even met the famous cyborg, unlike her. Right! She'd built up her life without him, so there was no way just one conversation with him could tear it down!
All the confidence she'd built up still wasn't enough to make knocking any easier. Her raised hand shook and she swallowed dryly as she rapped her knuckles against the door. It opened immediately, revealing a tall, well built man in a hoody and sweats. The top of her head only came up to his chest, so she had to crane her neck back to look at his face.
King looked down at her with the serious expression that had brought many monsters to their knees without a fight. His painfully blue eyes looked down at her with expectation, one large hand reaching out for the crumpled folder in her hands.
"Hand it over."
She did so, only realizing what was happening as he started closing the door.
"Wait!" She scrambled for a reason to stop him. "T-The Association t-told me to make sure you read it as s-soon as you got it."
Oh, she was going to be in so much trouble. Using her own name to bully wage workers at the Registration Office was one thing, but using the Association's to bully an S Class? She was a goner for sure.
King sighed, his displeasure sending chills down her back. He did it though, leaning against the door frame and opening the folder. The papers inside were creased from her worrying hands and she watched as he read over their contents, her heart in her throat. His expression didn't change even as he flipped to the next page. It didn't change when he put all the papers back in the folder and handed it back to her. It didn't change when he turned away from her walking back into his apartment without so much as a word, leaving the door open behind him.
This was it. She'd gone too far. How was she to know the man her mother had made her with was King? One word from him and her entire career could be over. Not even Miss Blizzard could help her, then.
"What are you doing?" King's voice startled her from her reverie and she looked through the open doorway to where he stood in a hallway, looking back at her over his shoulder. "Come in."
Or…maybe not? He didn't seem angry, exactly. He certainly wouldn't be inviting her into his home if he was upset with her.
Right?
Lily found herself seated at a somewhat wobbly dinner table, hands folded in her lap as she waited to be reprimanded. There was music coming from another room, quiet and mellow, and very familiar. King sat in the chair across from hers, looking at her from over his folded hands. The weight of his gaze had her sweating, his legendary intensity rolling off him in waves. The folder with the paternity test results lay open on the table between them, Lily's photograph on proud display next to King's address. The large man let out another sigh and Lily's fight or flight instinct kicked up several notches.
"I'm sorry," she said, leaning forward in a deep, seated bow. "I shouldn't have lied, but I didn't know you were the one who lived here."
"You didn't know?"
Lily shook her head, still not looking at him. "No, all I could get was the address. They wouldn't tell me your name." No matter how much she'd begged or threatened them.
"I see."
What did that mean?
The music floating in from the other room filled the awkward silence that rose up between them and Lily's brain insisted it was familiar. Where was it from?
"Ah! Magi-Pri: Revolution!"
Magical Princess—lovingly shortened to Magi-Pri by its fans—was a visual novel style dating simulation series famous for producing multiple versions of its games to satisfy all demographics. The story was almost always the same, but the genders of the capture targets and a few of the achievements varied across issues.
"You play Magi-Pri?"
Oh. Had she said that out loud?
She ducked her head sheepishly, rubbing at the back of her neck and looking at everything but the S Class Hero in front of her. "Ahaha, sometimes."
This was embarrassing. King was looking at her with a new light in his eyes, the pressure of his undivided attention almost too much.
"Who's your bias?"
…What?
"Oh, um, the Student Council President?"
It came out as a question, but King nodded, a small smile softening his terrifying expression. "A good choice."
Wait…did King…did the Strongest Man on Earth…play Magi-Pri?
"And yours?"
His answer was instant, not a trace of shame or hesitation. "Captain of the Baseball Team."
"No way," she exclaimed before she could stop herself. "Isn't that the hidden route? I've never been able to unlock it!"
King looked a little smug as he watched her try and fail to recover her composure, embarrassed over her outburst. "I could show you…"
He trailed off and Lily suddenly realized she was having a conversation about dating sims with King—with her father. This certainly wasn't what she was expecting when he opened the door, but it wasn't so bad.
"Would you? That would be awesome!"
The Magi-Pri: Revolution theme song filled the air, the light and happy piano in complete contrast to King's internal panic. His hands moved on their own, instinctively picking the dialogue choices that would unlock the game's secret route even as his eyes tried very hard not to look at the young teenager sitting next to him, bouncing excitedly as she wrote frantically in a notepad she pulled from nowhere. If the paperwork scattered on his dining table was to be believed, then she was his daughter.
That thought alone was scarier than all the monsters he'd ever faced. How had—no, when had he—why?
To say he was confused was a serious understatement, but he couldn't just get up and reread the documents she'd brought him. Not while he was showing her how to unlock the Baseball captain. Still, his leg kept bouncing and he was soaked in sweat and he still couldn't wrap his mind around the fact that this little girl was somehow related to him.
"Ah, L-Lily." That was fine, right? He could use her given name, right? "How old are you?"
She turned to look at him with eyes a few shades paler than his, the happy smile on her face sending a lance through his heart as she answered him. "I just turned fourteen."
"Ah, I see—." Wait. Fourteen!? Then, if he was her father, then that would mean—!
Oh. Oh. So that's when.
Blurry memories of his one and only underage bender crawled their way out of the dusty corner of his mind where he'd buried them. It was…a party…his cousin forced him to go on the last day of their vacation before King went back to his home on the other side of the country. It was supposed to be fun, a time to bond with other kids his age, but he could barely remember any of it beyond the pounding headache and nausea the next day. Surely, he would remember if he'd, ah, procreated.
"Is your mother…from City V?"
Lily laughed nervously, nodding her head. "Yeah. She always told me she couldn't remember who my dad was, so, when I saved up enough money, I decided to see if he was in the Hero database. I know it wasn't right to get your address out of it, but I couldn't resist. I just…wanted to know, you know. I promise," she continued, holding up her hands in a three fingered salute. "I will never tell anyone about this. I-I'll even pretend not to know you, that this never happened, if that's what you want. Just," she looked away, a little sheepish. "Can you show me the secret route, first?"
King stared at Lily for a long moment, the girl squirming under the weight of his gaze. He knew the effect he had on people. The assumptions they made about him based on his face, height, and muscular build. Assumptions were the basis of his entire Hero career, after all, to Saitama's detriment. The terror of facing down monsters on a regular basis was outweighed only by the horror that someone might realize he was a fraud, that he'd taken—been assigned, really—credit for someone else's work. That fear kept him from really socializing the way he used to. Only Saitama was fair game, since he understood his situation and was, miraculously, alright with it. He'd basically resigned himself to the single life until he could either retire or fake his death, and, even then, the odds of being left alone by monsters was slim. His face was…distinctive, to say the least.
With such a life, when would he get the chance to have a kid?
He turned back to the monitor, giving the anime girl the appropriate gift. "Don't worry about it. It's probably better if nobody knows, though. Monsters won't give up an opportunity to mess with King's kid."
She held up a fist, her other hand clutching at her skinny bicep in a cartoonish show of strength. "Don't worry about me! I'm a B Class Hero, Rank 74! I can take care of myself!"
King turned away, disguising his startled choke as a clearing of his throat with practiced ease. "R-really? That's great! Very impressive."
Too impressive. B Class, at fourteen? If he'd actually earned his place as an S Class Hero, then that wouldn't be so surprising. However, his actual strength was probably—no, definitely—lower than hers. He took in her beaming smile.
"Thanks! Mom always said I must get my strength from my dad, and I guess she was right!"
Oh no.
Some of his panic must have shown in his face because Lily deflated, looking down and away with a sad look in her eyes.
"Sorry. I know you probably don't want me to call you that. I was just a little excited, I won't do it again."
What was he supposed to do? On the one hand, he really wasn't ready for someone to call him dad. He was still young! On the other, he didn't want her to look so sad.
"It's fine." It really wasn't, but the grateful smile on her face almost convinced him it was. "What got you interested in Magi-Pri?" Smooth transition, King, really smooth.
A blush rose in her face and he realized he'd just asked a young girl—their relationship aside—why she played a dating sim rated 17.
"It's a little embarrassing," she said, talking over his halting attempt to take back the question. "But my mom had a copy of the first Magical Princess game. She never played it, so I asked her about it one day. She said it was the only thing my dad left behind—besides me, of course."
Oh. So that's where he left it.
They sat together in embarrassed silence, the Baseball captain's theme filling the air as he finished the task that would unlock her as a capture target. Lily wasn't paying attention anymore, though, and was instead fiddling with her hands.
"U-um, King," she began haltingly. "Would it be ok if I had your number? I…I want to get to know you better, i-if you're O.K. with it, I mean! I understand if you'd rather not!"
The panicked waking of her hands and her wide, terrified eyes perfectly reflected his internal state, but his face remained stoic, his many encounters with monsters having trained him for this day.
"That's fine." Did he know no other words? "It'd be nice to play a game with someone." That was it? That was all he was capable of? Come on, man, you can do better than that! "No one can know I play this."
Apparently, he couldn't.
Thankfully, Lily just laughed. "Yeah, I guess it is a little out of character for you, huh? Don't worry, it'll be our little secret."
He let himself relax, just a little. While he knew it would be safer if he didn't associate too closely with the girl, he couldn't quite bring himself to cut her off, entirely. Her happy smile was doing weird things to his insides that he didn't want to unpack. It should be fine if he kept their relationship really shallow, right? Just a couple of gaming buddies, romancing anime characters and unlocking secrets. That much was fine, right?
Who was he kidding? The instant he read the paternity results he was a goner. His mother raised him right, and there was no way any child of his would go uncared for while he had the means to care for them. Thanks to his face and Saitama, he definitely had the means. He used the stipend from the Association to buy games, mostly, but he could more than afford to buy a few doubles.
"What other games do you play?"
Lily listed a few other dating sims and other classics whose names he recognized easily. He nodded, oddly a little proud of her taste in entertainment.
"Good choices. I have a couple of those here, too. Want to play?"
She blinked up at him, almost like she couldn't believe he'd offered. "Really? I know you weren't expecting me and I'd hate to be a bother. I-I can come back some other time, i-if you'd prefer."
He did have a few plans—eating pizza and playing Magi-Pri—but they could be postponed. "It's fine. Here, let's play this one," he pulled out a game with a long story mode. "We can start a new save and pick it up the next time you're here."
His open invitation to come back put a big smile on her face and she nodded vigorously. The way she openly expressed her emotions was nothing at all like him, her cute face and small stature clearly from her mother's side of the family. There was one thing no one could deny, though.
Her taste in games came straight from him.
