"Hmm," I groaned, waking up. My bed seemed a little cold and hard. Slowly my brain realized that something was very wrong, but it couldn't piece together what. Why is it working so slow?
"SANS THE HUMAN MOVED."
So loud. I attempted to cover my ears, but my hands wouldn't move. Pulling on one of them, I felt something around my wrist. I tried the other one, but it wasn't any different. Finally, it clicked that I was restrained and most definitely not at home in bed. My eyes shot open, only to be blinded by the light of the room.
"SHE'S AWAKE!"
I turned to look at the voice, only to see something that was not one of the things my brain was trying to imagine to explain this. A skeleton was standing nearby, smiling at me. I stared at him, completely stunned and too scared to speak.
"HELLO NEW FRIEND."
"careful papyrus. we don't know if they're a friend. they're definitely not supposed to be awake yet."
"CAN'T I JUST PUT THEM BACK TO SLEEP?"
"we've already been over this. it's not safe."
"BUT BROTHER THEY LOOK SCARED. ISN'T THERE ANYTHING WE COULD DO?"
"you can talk to them, but otherwise no. not till i'm done. i'm trying to hurry so please stop distracting me."
"SORRY. HELLO, NEW FRIEND, ARE YOU A HUMAN?"
I stared at him, struggling to speak. Everything was wrong. I was sure I must be dreaming, but even that felt wrong. "Where am I?" I finally managed to ask.
"YOU ARE IN OUR HOUSE. SORTA."
"Why?"
"SANS AND THE HUMAN BROUGHT YOU HERE. THEY'RE GOING TO STOP THE RESETS!" Papyrus cheered.
My brain froze. Resets? Sans and Papyrus? My brain must have really been working in slow motion if I hadn't recognized those names yet. I finally glanced over at the computer where the other voice had come from. There was another skeleton there wearing a gray hoodie, but his back was to me and I couldn't see much more of him. Papyrus wasn't wearing his battle body, instead his clothes were a plain light gray t-shirt and shorts. They looked way more like real skeletons than most fan art I saw so I could excuse my inability to recognize them slightly.
Next to Sans was the only item that seemed to give off any proper color in the room. It was a bright red heart in a clear box of sorts. There was a small silver blob shifting on the surface of the heart and wires connected to the heart in many spots despite its small size. The only thing I could think of it was that it must be a soul. It might have been mine, but I never really saw myself as the determined type.
Closer to me, I noticed some sort of machine with more wires coming off it right towards me. I didn't look to see if they connected or not, but I could guess that they did. I looked at Sans' computer and what little I could see of the screen was complete gibberish. The only thing interesting was that any words I may have been able to read were entirely in Wing Dings, which I had never bothered to learn. I doubted they'd tell me much I'd understand anyway.
"I really must be dreaming," I whispered, forcing my attention back to Papyrus. "This isn't possible. It couldn't be."
"BUT IT IS. SANS SAID YOU MIGHT THINK YOU'RE DREAMING, BUT YOU ARE NOT."
"This doesn't make any sense. How?"
"SANS SAID HE WOULD EXPLAIN AFTER HE'S DONE."
"What's he doing?" I asked, on the verge of tears. I didn't want to cry, but my fear was making it almost impossible not to. Everything felt off and wrong.
"BROTHER, THEY'RE CRYING," Papyrus stated before the first tear could escape my eye.
"are they in pain? they shouldn't be," Sans asked, not looking away from his computer for even a moment.
I shook my head before Papyrus could ask me.
"THEY'RE SAYING NO. THEN WHY ARE YOU CRYING FRIEND?"
"Heh. Why? My most random daydreams and absolute worst nightmares just combined and you're saying it's real. How do you expect me to react? I'm terrified," I cried. "I have no idea what's going on."
"i'll explain soon, just trying to hurry with this," Sans mumbled, still focused on the computer. His sense of urgency really wasn't helping my fear.
The only thing I succeeded in understanding was that for whatever reason I was here, it was to stop the resets and I couldn't understand what that would mean for me. Resets were the worst part of Undertale, and if fanfiction was anything to go by, Sans wanted to stop them desperately. My well being and safety would definitely not be as important if it was even on their list of concerns. Suddenly my body spiked with pain. I whimpered, tears flowing freely from my eyes. It left me gasping for air when the pain finally stopped, and my eyes quickly drifted to the red soul. The silver dot had stopped moving and the surrounding area looked scarred where the two colors connected. It was also a circle rather than a blob.
"SANS!"
"sorry. it'd be better if they'd remained asleep, but they woke up. almost done… and… there! done." Sans sighed, slumping in his chair.
"OUR NEW FRIEND IS STILL SCARED."
"right. them. how much do they know?" Sans asked, shifting his chair over to me and staring right at me. Empty eye sockets with little white lights were scarier than I thought they'd be, but it might just be because of the slight glare and smirk he was looking at me with. Whatever just happened, he'd succeed, and I was helpless.
"I don't know anything about what's going on. All I know about Undertale is from fanfiction and the small amount I've played. What is going on? Why am I here?" I asked, my voice shaking. "I d-don't understand."
"there's not much i can explain without you answering some of my questions. do you think you can do that?"
"I can try."
"good. the first one should be easy. are you human?"
I nodded, completely confused by the question.
"i've figured out quite a bit, but what exactly is our world like in yours?"
"A video game."
"you said you've played. how much?"
"One neutral run and one pacifist."
"Why'd you reset?"
"I w-wanted to do something more in my game before I'd leave it alone. Just a few stupid little things I missed in my first pacifist run."
"why'd you choose the name chara?"
"I… uh… how did you know that?" I asked, my cheeks heating up slightly.
Sans stared.
"Okay… reasons," I answered for him. "It just felt right to end my game with the name the game says is the true name. I'm not the first fallen human, so I should name them with the correct name rather than mine." I felt somewhat annoyed by the one sided questions, so I asked my own. "Are you really asking because you need information or just to find out more about me?"
"both."
"Okay then. Can I know why I'm here yet?"
"YOU'RE HERE TO STOP THE RESETS!" Papyrus answered.
"So you've said, but that doesn't explain how. How am I here and what does it have to do with resets?"
"we pulled you over. what do you know about our world?"
"A lot, but absolutely nothing. Everything I 'know' is theories, some from others and some of my own from studying the game way more than I should. I know the resets exist and all fanfiction and the game itself guilt trips you super hard for resetting. That's why I was planning to only do it one last time. Now that I'm here, I'm not even sure I can trust the game's information 'cause it definitely didn't tell me it was real."
"it may not be."
"But—"
"this is me explaining."
"Right, sorry. Please continue."
"we don't know if it was intentional, but the game you have is ridiculously similar to our real world. there must be enough differences to not cause a problem normally, but chara is the last piece. by naming the fallen human chara, you make the two just similar enough to connect through her. you steal what should have been her power and you control frisk's body. we used that connection to pull you through."
I didn't know how to respond, so I glanced around the room, slightly confused by the lack of a human child, or two, if they needed them. I looked down and finally looked at my own body. Everything was wrong. Everything was smaller than it should have been, and it didn't look like a younger me either. I was wearing a striped shirt and pants similar to Frisk, but oddly in shades of grey rather than colored. I knew I didn't own clothes like that. They had asked me if I was human, hadn't they? "Oh," I whispered before my eyes flooded with tears again. I tried to stare at something else, but it was too late. I had successfully brought the restraints and wires back into focus, and now I knew I wasn't even in the right body.
"SANS! YOU MADE THEM CRY AGAIN."
"i'm not sure if there was a way to prevent that. they have a lot to process papyrus."
"BUT WE NEED TO MAKE IT BETTER."
"and how do you propose we do that? i still need to get some information from them and we're definitely not letting them go until i'm sure it's safe."
"THEN WE MAKE SURE IT'S SAFE TO DO SO. I'M SURE THAT WILL MAKE THEM FEEL BETTER."
"it would, but they're not exactly trustworthy."
"THEN CHECK THEIR STATS."
"that's not as easy as it sounds. i already looked and i could only see attack and defence. they're both higher than frisk."
"BUT THE COMPUTER."
"i only set up to get them here. as is, i still can't find them or information on them yet."
"HOW LONG WOULD THAT TAKE?" Papyrus asked.
"don' know. a while." Sans shrugged. "and this setup won't help."
"A WHILE IS TOO LONG BROTHER, THE HUMAN REQUIRES OUR ASSISTANCE NOW. THEIR STATS ARE NOT THAT HIGH AND THE ROOM IS CLEAR OF THREATENING OBJECTS. WE CAN LET THEM UP. PLEASE?"
Sans sighed, staring at the red soul. "fine, but only if we get this and that out first," he said, indicating the wires on the red soul and the machine next to me.
"VERY WELL. I'LL HANDLE THE MACHINE," Papyrus declared, quickly approaching the machine. He followed the wires to me where they attached to little sticky censors of sorts. He gently started pulling them off, but I quickly lost focus on that as I felt a skeletal hand pick me up.
It took me only a moment to realize it was not me being picked up, but my soul. I also became quite confident the red soul was Frisk's, currently mine, as I saw Sans gently pulling it out of the box. It felt strange, but not necessarily bad. That was until a wave of pain like sharp needles passed through my body. I whimpered, barely choking back a scream as my entire body tensed up.
"SANS!" Papyrus scolded, noticing my pain.
"i didn't do anything," Sans responded. "unless." Sans was staring at my soul and I was staring at him. His thumb inched its way towards the silver area of my soul.
I nearly screamed when he touched the scarred area between the colors. The pain faded when he was fully on the silver. I struggled to breathe while I stared at Sans through my now blurred vision.
"SANS! THAT WAS INTENTIONAL!"
"yes, but now i know what hurt um rather than accidently doing it repeatedly. i can't avoid it if i don't know about it."
"FINE," Papyrus huffed. "BUT YOU SHOULD BE KINDER TO OUR NEW HUMAN FRIEND."
I giggled slightly when my eyes cleared just enough for me to see him glaring slightly at Sans.
"WHAT'S SO FUNNY HUMAN?"
"Nothing, it's just… nice to see you care. Thanks."
"OF COURSE I CARE HUMAN! YOU ARE OUR GUEST… DESPITE APPEARANCES."
"and you're handling this surprisingly well," Sans added somewhat skeptically. "how old are you, kiddo?"
"Old enough to not be called kiddo. I'm eighteen."
"huh. guess that could explain why you woke up. male or female?"
"Female. Where are these questions coming from?" I asked, blushing slightly.
"could be important. frisk and chara are girls though, so lucky you."
"That's good. Ow!" I whined.
"that you'll shout for? you were quieter when i touched the scar and it definitely seemed more painful." Sans sighed, holding the wire he'd pulled off my soul.
I pouted, only flinching slightly as he pulled another one off. Unlike whatever Papyrus pulled off, the wires on my soul had needles. It stung when Sans pulled them off, but he was right, it wasn't as painful as the scar. I flinched again.
"BROTHER—"
"no, papyrus, i can't be any nicer. it's going to hurt taking them off, just like it did putting them on."
"YOU WERE NICER TO FRISK." Papyrus pouted as Sans continued to pull out the rest of the wires.
"that's risky now."
I sighed when Sans finished and set my soul back in the box.
"HONESTLY BROTHER, YOU SHOULD GIVE THAT BACK TO THE HUMAN," Papyrus said, staring at my soul.
"i will in a bit. stuff first."
"FINE." Papyrus sighed, grabbing the machine and wires from Sans. "COULD YOU PLEASE OPEN THE DOOR?"
"yeah." Sans quickly moved to the door and unlocked it with a kea. Looked like the room was at least better than the human capture zone. Sans shut and locked the door behind him. Of course, that of all things made me suddenly feel uncomfortable. I was a little surprised when he came to stand next to me.
"Did you want something?" I asked, really not comfortable with the stare he was giving me.
"The truth. Tell me again what runs you've done."
I really wanted to curl up now, but the restraints prevented that. "I was telling the truth before, I did one neutral run, and one pacifist." I answered.
"And your plan was to do another pacifist and stop?"
"That was my plan. I don't know how well I would have done at leaving the game alone, but my intention was to stop."
Sans stared at me, seeming to at least believe me, whether or not he was okay with it. "And what do you know of the other option?"
"A lot more than I should." I admitted. "I've watched a lot of videos. I was curious about a lot of things that are better addressed in that path, but I'm not normally good at games. It feels so wrong to be saying that, with you right here."
"i asked." Sans shrugged. "we did know we are fictional to your world. you've accepted that we're real much better than I expected."
"I wouldn't say I've accepted it well. I honestly still don't believe this is real yet, but it feels real, and even if it's not, I'd hate to do something I'd regret on the slim chance it is. I mean, why act differently than I normally would just because I'm dreaming?" I questioned, my eyes drifting to my soul, then the computer next to it. "Is the computer staying here?"
"it's password protected, even more so on anything i wouldn't want you getting into. you can't move any of it either. why do you care? you can't use it to escape."
"Heh, escape? Escape to where? This isn't even my world. Sure, if we're underground it would be cool to look around, but it's not like I could hide somewhere forever. If we're on the surface, I really hate getting lost. As far as I can tell, I'm better off here for now. it's not like I can get home any other way, if I even can." I said, trying and failing to not let it sink in that this trip might only be one way. "I… will be able to go home… won't I?"
"possibly. there are a lot of things we need to make sure of first, so i can't be sure, but it would be best to send you back."
"That's good." I smiled, my eyes watering slightly. "I was getting a little scared this trip might be one way."
"it still might be."
"But my chances of leaving are much better if you're trying to get me home rather than… not."
"ya got people to get back to?"
"My family." I smiled before my smile quickly turned to a frown. "How long have I been here? They're probably worried about me. They don't even know where I… Sans? I'm in Frisk's body, right?"
"yeah."
"Then what about my body? Am I dead? But I'm here! What if my family thinks I'm dead? Will my body just die on its own if I'm here?"
"whoa! just calm down there. more likely than not, your body will simply be asleep while you're here. they won't be able to wake you till you return, but i doubt they'll think you're dead. at worst they'll probably think you've—no, the human's call it a coma and that's different. if all goes well, this will take a while, but you'll be back soon enough. you'll be fine."
"Oh, okay. I hope they're not too worried then. What's taking Papyrus so long?"
"probably putting all that stuff in my room. just out of here would have been fine, but it's papyrus." Sans shrugged. "just outside ain't good enough for him."
"Of course it isn't." I smiled, sighing slightly. "Nice to know that's the same at least."
"sure, and he really won't appreciate this still being here." Sans sighed, pulling my soul out of the box it was in.
I cringed slightly from the sensation, but Sans quickly let go of my soul. It drifted over until it was floating above my chest. Both Sans and I stared at it.
"odd. not going to run away?"
"Run away? How would I run?"
"pulling your soul back in, we consider that running away. your soul is still here. weren't you scared?"
"Terrified, but running won't help that. Papyrus will come back soon, and helping you would probably come with a higher chance of going home than not. I like that option much more than I currently have reason to fear what you want." I paused. "What… do you want? I get you want to end the resets, but no one's clarified what I'm supposed to do about it?"
"nothing. we only have things we don't want you doing. Things that we won't allow you to do."
I flinched away from Sans' pitch black glare. It was much more terrifying than the game could ever show, but I still refused to run.
"I guess playing Undertale would be one of those things," I whispered, realizing whatever other things he was talking about I probably wouldn't want to do anyway. His glare instantly felt much less terrifying.
Sans nodded, his eye lights back in place.
"SANS," Papyrus called from the other side of the door.
Sans' glare vanished in an instant as he went to let Papyrus in.
"What about everyone else? Or fanfiction?" I questioned as they came towards me.
"no one else matters now, and whatever stories your world has made up about us will not affect us here."
"That's good." I smiled slightly.
Sans seemed to analyze me for a second before he turned his attention to Papyrus. "bro, ya didn't have to put the stuff in my room. it would have been faster if you just left it outside."
"YES I DID BROTHER BECAUSE YOU WON'T. YOU REFUSE TO PICK UP ANYTHING." Papyrus scolded Sans.
My smile grew as I watched them until Papyrus' focus suddenly latched on to my soul.
"IT IS NICE TO SEE YOU RELEASED THE HUMAN SOUL, BUT WHY ARE THEY STILL RESTRAINED?"
"why the surprise papyrus? they aren't exactly trustworthy."
"BROTHER! YOU CAN NOT LEAVE THEM LIKE THIS SO YOU HAVE TO LET THEM UP."
"i can and no, i don't have to," Sans grumbled quietly.
"THEY SEEM LIKE A VERY NICE HUMAN."
"Sure, but it could all be an act. We know very little about them, Papyrus."
I stayed completely still and silent, really not liking Sans' shift in tone.
"CORECT!" Papyrus cheered, "BUT THIS ROOM HAS BEEN CLEARED OF ALL THREATS AND THEY CAN NOT LEAVE. WE CAN NOT GET TO KNOW THEM IF THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING."
Sans said nothing, but he glanced at the computer.
"NO SANS. YOU SAID THE COMPUTER STAYS. YOU CAN NOT CHANGE NOW JUST TO STALL. IF YOU DON'T LET THEM UP, I WILL."
"Definitely not. Just—" Sans sighed, staring at me. I was just glad he wasn't glaring. "at least box her soul while we let her up."
"BROTHER? ARE YOU SURE THAT'S OKAY? THE HUMAN DOESN'T SEEM TO ENJOY BEING RESTRAINED."
"If more restraints for a moment will help me be a bit less restrained, I'll be fine," I whispered.
"YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO MOVE AT ALL."
"I think I'll be okay. As long as it won't hurt."
"VERY WELL, NEW HUMAN FRIEND. I WILL BE CONTAINING YOU'RE SOUL NOW. IT WILL BE COMPLETELY SAFE AND WILL NOT HARM YOU. READY?"
I nodded, not really ready, but ready as I'd ever be.
AN:
So, I didn't really do these in my Vocaloid Fanfiction, but I think I'm going to try it this time around. Feel free to ignore these. I have no idea if I'll be consistent with them or not, but I will try my best to be consistent about updating this story every other week.
Constructive criticism and other comments are more than welcome, and yes, I do know Frisk and Chara do not have genders in the game. They're girls in my fanfiction, mostly to make it easier on me to write and to make it easier for the main character who is also a girl.
Thank you so much for reading and I hope you enjoy!
