A/N – This was a sort of a double update, so go back to chapter 16 if you haven't read it yet :-).
CHAPTER 17
NEXT MORNING (TUESDAY)
It was early morning when Callie heard Sofia call again. She yawned and stretched her arms out towards the other side of the bed and when she felt its emptiness, she opened her eyes as her brain slowly remembered why Arizona was not there. She turned to her back and let out a heavy sigh before she got up and walked over to Sofia's crib.
"Good morning sweetheart," she said with a smile as she took Sofia into her arms and kissed her left cheek. "We should go wake mama up, what do you think?"
"Mama, up…" Sofia mumbled.
"Yes, let's go wake her up," Callie said and walked out of the room.
"Mama," Sofia called as she wrapped her left arm around Callie's neck.
"Yes, baby, mama is in another room and we'll go and wake her up now," Callie explained again and Sofia giggled as they walked towards the door to the other room.
"Shhh," Callie tried to instruct Sofia to be quiet as she slowly opened the door but as soon as Sofia saw Arizona in the bed she squeaked with joy.
"Mama up!"
"Shhhh," Callie chuckled as she noticed Arizona's body stir immediately and soon she was staring at the bright blue orbs making her heart skip a beat.
"Mmmm… good morning," Arizona mumbled and smiled as she stretched her arms.
"Good morning," Callie greeted with a smile. She approached the bed and sat down next to Arizona while Sofia held her arms out and Arizona took her and placed her next to her.
"How did you sleep?" Callie asked.
"Terribly…" Arizona replied sincerely and sighed, "I almost came to the bedroom five minutes after coming here last night," she explained with a chuckle.
Callie laughed, "Me too, I was already one foot out the door when Sofia woke up and stopped me… and then I convinced myself I can do this for a few days and that it's really not such a big deal…"
Arizona laughed and sighed, "Yeah, I kind of did the same," she said as she watched Sofia slide down the bed and get on her feet.
"Mama up!" Sofia demanded and made Arizona giggle.
"Okay, okay, I am getting up," Arizona said through laughter as she sat up and leaned towards Callie.
"How does that saying go… Absence makes the heart grow fonder…"
"Yeah," Callie nodded as she smiled and placed her right hand on Arizona's left cheek.
"Well, I'm gonna take comfort in that, and focus on the fact that it's really nice being woken up like this. And I will try not to think about waking up lying next to you," Arizona said as she closed the distance between them and kissed Callie softly.
"Good morning gorgeous," Arizona whispered as she pushed her fingers into Callie's hair.
Callie smiled broadly, "Good morning gorgeous," she replied and wrapped her arm around Arizona's waist as their lips danced together.
"Up, up!" Sofia demanded again making them break the kiss and laugh.
"Okay, Sofia, I'm coming," Arizona smiled broadly as Callie stood up to give her room. Arizona got up and took Sofia in her arms. She kissed her cheek as she turned to Callie and gave her another kiss. "Breakfast?" Arizona asked.
"Yum!" Sofia said and clapped her hands making Arizona giggle.
Callie laughed out loud and took Arizona's hand, "Come on, breakfast time," she said as she pulled Arizona's hand and led them out of the room.
The day flew by and soon they were saying goodbye in the hallway again. A few hours later Arizona woke up in the middle of the night with a startle, she looked around the room, slowly remembering where she was. She sighed and massaged her own temples, she turned to the other side hoping she would fall asleep again but she felt so alone, and a bit anxious. She tried closing her eyes but her heart kept on thumping loudly in her chest.
She got up slowly and tiptoed around the apartment hoping to find the door to the bedroom open so she could at least see Callie and Sofia, and maybe then she would calm down. The door was slightly open and Arizona saw light coming out of the room. She came closer but hesitated. What if Callie is awake and she sees me?, she thought feeling like her heart was going to jump out of her chest. She took a deep breath and slowly pushed the door.
Sofia was asleep in her bed, and Callie had fallen asleep still holding a book in her hands. Arizona came to Sofia's crib and fixed her cover as her fingers caressed Sofia's arm. She walked over to Callie and took the book out of her hands. Callie didn't wake up but turned to her side and pulled the cover up. Arizona smiled and felt her heart skip a beat thinking about wrapping her arms around Callie's waist. She sneaked next to Callie and pushed her body closer, and when she wrapped her arm around Callie, she heard her whisper.
"Arizona?"
"Yeah…"
"Is everything okay?"
"Yes, I just… I had a nightmare and I didn't want to be alone."
Callie turned around and looked at Arizona.
"A nightmare? What kind of a nightmare?"
"Umm, well… I mean it could be a memory too…"
"About what?" Callie asked softly.
"Err…" Arizona hesitated and looked away. "Have you ever left with Mark and Sofia…?"
"What do you mean left?" Callie asked with surprise.
"In my dream… well… I saw you leave with him, I was standing on the stairs in the hospital and the three of you left without me, has that ever happened?"
"Well yes, numerous times," Callie explained wondering why this was something Arizona would call a nightmare.
"Oh," Arizona commented as her heart sank.
Callie placed her fingers under Arizona's chin and lifted her head up. "Arizona, there were so many times when we worked different shifts, or when you had to stay longer, or I had to stay longer, many times Mark and I picked up Sofia from daycare and left home together after you said goodbye to us. You also went home with Mark and Sofia while I watched you leave, on several occasions."
"So you never left me, like we broke up and you left with him and Sofia?" Arizona asked as her voice trembled.
"God! Of course not!" Callie exclaimed and placed her hand over Arizona's cheek. "I love you, and I love our family and I don't want anyone else by my side, only you and it's been just the two of us since you came back from Africa."
Arizona smiled, "So do you think it was a memory?"
"Well I'm not sure, because you wouldn't call it a nightmare if it was a memory, we were always smiling and giggling with Sofia, waving at each other… were you sad in the dream?"
"I don't remember, I just remember seeing you leave and I woke up and then started panicking when I remembered what the dream was about…"
"Well, I promise you it was always about going home after work, nothing nightmarish about it," Callie said with a reassuring smile as she wrapped her arm around Arizona's waist and pulled her in.
"Okay," Arizona said and smiled, "It was scary to think you and Sofia would leave me…" she whispered.
"We are not going anywhere," Callie whispered back and placed a soft kiss on Arizona's lips making her smile broadly.
"Maybe I should have more nightmares, it's nice to feel you wrapped around me again," Arizona said and snuggled closer into Callie as she pressed her lips against Callie's again.
"Arizona Robbins, did you invent a nightmare just to sneak into bed with me?" Callie teased as she distanced her head a few inches back to look into Arizona's eyes.
"What!? I did not!" Arizona protested defensively.
Callie laughed quietly, "I'm just teasing you," she said and snuggled back closer. "Besides, I'm glad you're here again," she mumbled as she inhaled the scent of Arizona's skin.
Arizona smiled, "Me too…"
"You are staying tonight, right?" Callie asked in a hopeful whisper.
"Definitely, I need more snuggles to calm down," Arizona said with a wink and Callie smiled before she let their lips meet softly.
WEDNESDAY
On Wednesday night Callie was lying in bed staring at the ceiling, she glanced towards the empty pillow next to her and turned towards it. She placed her hand on the top and ran it over.
"This is ridiculous," she said and removed the cover from her body. She got up and checked on Sofia who was sleeping soundly in her crib. Callie took the baby monitor and went towards Arizona's room.
The door to the room was ajar and Callie slowly moved it and popped her head in and was immediately met with Arizona's opened eyes.
"You're awake too…" Callie stated in surprise.
"I find it hard to sleep without you…" Arizona explained and shrugged her shoulders with a smile.
"Yeah, me too…" Callie admitted as she walked closer. She lifted the baby monitor for Arizona to see.
"Sofia is sound asleep, we should get some sleep too…" she said as a teasing smile appeared on her face.
Arizona laughed and moved to the side making space for Callie to join her. Callie placed the monitor on the nightstand then snuggled next to Arizona and slowly wrapped her arm around Arizona's waist.
"Hi…" she whispered and pressed her lips against Arizona's lips.
Arizona giggled, "Hi…" she replied as she let her tongue brush against Callie's top lip making Callie moan and instantly deepen the kiss as she slipped her hand underneath Arizona's top.
Arizona laughed, "This is not sleeping…," she mumbled as her back arched when Callie's thumb grazed over her right nipple.
Callie smiled, "You started it…" she said as she pushed her body harder against Arizona, letting her hand slide down and squeeze Arizona's right buttock.
"Mmmm… you're the one who came here wearing those sexy cheeky pink slips," Arizona said as her fingers traced over the skin along the upper trim of Callie's underwear, smiling as she felt Callie's abdomen react to the touch of her fingers. And when her fingers slipped inside and came in contact with Callie's wet and warm folds she made them both moan and forget about all the rules they were supposed to follow.
FRIDAY
"Okay, so remind me again what's the point of this arrangement? You've only spent Monday alone in this room," Callie pointed out with an amused chuckle as she felt Arizona's fingers trail along her naked back while she caressed Arizona's left cheek. "We would be much more comfortable in the big bed you know…" she added as she tucked Arizona's hair behind her ear and cupped her face.
Arizona smiled, "Umm, yeah, you are right, makes no sense to continue if we are not playing by the rules…"
"Well… we can try harder to play by the rules… do you want that?" Callie asked as her thumb trailed over Arizona's face.
Arizona placed her left hand next to Callie's right side and propped herself up.
"Not really," she said shaking her head. "I almost died, we should celebrate life…, and enjoy every moment of it… I just… This week I realized that I want to just be in love with you and let myself feel it all to the fullest…" Arizona said before she pressed her lips against Callie's mouth and felt her smile into the kiss.
"Mmm… and… does that… include… a… lot… of… kisses?" Callie spoke through the movement of their lips as she suddenly flipped Arizona over.
"Mm-hmm, lots and lots of kisses…," Arizona mumbled letting her hand roam down Callie's body, "and touches… and moans…" she added as her fingers came in contact with Callie's folds.
Callie moaned, "Ohhh… mmm… I really do like that plan…" she said and then grabbed Arizona's hand, pulled it away and pinned it to the bed. "My turn!" she said with determination and made Arizona laugh.
"Oh-kay," Arizona teased and wrapped her fingers into Callie's hair kissing her passionately, letting her tongue hungrily play with Callie's tongue. Callie moaned into the kiss and moved her right hand between Arizona's thighs to play with the little bundle of nerves and soon she heard Arizona let out a loud groan as she felt Arizona's legs wrap around her back when her fingers entered deep inside her inviting walls.
They spent most of the Saturday switching the rooms and later taking a stroll with Sofia. It took them both by surprise that they felt exhausted once they got into bed.
"God, I'm too tired to do anything but sleep…" Callie mumbled as she struggled to keep her eyes open.
"Yeah, when did we get that old?" Arizona asked only to get no reply from Callie. She smiled and observed Callie as her body rose up and down slowly with deep breaths. She leaned forward and pressed her lips against Callie's making her smile.
"Sorry, you said something…" Callie mumbled.
"Oh, it doesn't matter, let's get to sleep," Arizona said as she lightly pushed Callie to turn on her side and then wrapped her arm around Callie's body. Callie sighed with content and pulled Arizona's arm in tightly.
"Goodnight, gorgeous…" Callie mumbled.
"Goodnight, gorgeous," Arizona replied with a smile as she kissed Callie's shoulder. A few minutes later Arizona felt a strong need to say something else.
"Callie…" she called.
"Hmmm?" Callie uttered almost asleep.
"I love you," Arizona said softly as she felt warmth envelop her heart.
Callie smiled broadly and took Arizona's hand to her lips. She kissed her fingers gently and whispered back softly.
"I love you too…"
SUNDAY
The next day they had a picnic outside and finally took plenty advantage of the big bed later in the evening. They were lying in each other's arms, caressing each other's skin, cherishing the moments of intimacy they could finally share.
"I have found my favorite thing you do in bed?" Arizona stated, running her fingers lightly along Callie's arm.
Callie raised her eyebrows, her eyes widening in a second and turning into a darker shade, giving away curiosity and amusement mixed with sexual tension.
"Oh my God, I didn't mean that!" Arizona protested. "Do you have a one track mind?"
Callie laughed, "Have you looked at yourself in the mirror lately?" she said letting her eyes trail down Arizona's body.
Arizona slapped Callie's hand, "Stop it! I was going to say something sweet and romantic."
"Hot and steamy can go together with sweet and romantic," Callie said as she wrapped her arms around Arizona's waist.
Arizona laughed but rolled her eyes slightly.
"So what is the sweet and romantic thing you wanted to say?" Callie insisted.
"I'll tell you some other day," Arizona teased and kissed Callie's lips.
"Oh, come on!" Callie protested, "You cannot throw that in and then just take it back!"
"How can I take back what I haven't even said yet?" Arizona teased again and when Callie pouted she laughed out loud.
"Okay," Callie simply said then jumped out of bed and went into the bathroom.
"Are you going to pout in the bathroom now?" Arizona asked with surprise but still very much amused by Callie's reaction.
A minute later Callie came back to the bedroom with a bunch of candles in her arms.
"What are you doing?" Arizona asked as she observed Callie place the candles around the room and grab some more from the drawers.
"I'm setting the scene so you can share that something sweet and romantic," Callie informed and when she lit the last candle she turned the light off and slid back into bed next to Arizona.
"Oh," Arizona gasped as she got lost in the brown eyes that were now reflecting the candle glow from around the room, "it's beautiful," she whispered.
"See, I can be sweet and romantic," Callie whispered as she leaned forward and kissed Arizona's lips softly.
Arizona smiled, "Mmm… indeed yes, I can see that…," she whispered back.
"So… what is your favourite thing I do in bed?" Callie asked again while a big anticipating grin covered her face making Arizona laugh out loud.
"You're cute when you are impatient, you know that…?" Arizona said and leaned over to let their lips meet.
"That's it?" Callie asked a bit of disappointment audible in her voice.
Arizona chuckled, "No that's not it," she said through laughter, "Although you also look really cute when you are pouting," she added as she traced her fingers over Callie's lips. She looked up and let their eyes meet as her fingers continued caressing Callie's jaw, and when her thumb brushed against her right cheekbone she leaned forward and captured Callie's lips again. After a few minutes she pulled back and let her fingers roam over Callie's shoulder.
"Remember how you told me that you like the slow exhale I do just before turning to sleep?"
"Uh-huh," Callie nodded and smiled.
"There's something similar I've realized I like about you," Arizona explained and smiled as she got lost in Callie's eyes.
"Oh, really," Callie asked, intrigued now, "And what is that?" she asked.
"I love how cute you are when you are half asleep…"
"Really?"
"Mm-hmm," Arizona confirmed, "the way your whole face is relaxed, and your eyes half closed, and your breathing lingering on the brink of the fully asleep depth… your mouth slightly open…, there's this calmness that surrounds you in those moments and I just want to snuggle into you and let our bodies breathe as one…, although I do also want to kiss you in those moments as well…" Arizona said and giggled softly.
"Interesting…" Callie smiled as her eyes fixated on Arizona's lips.
"But I'm not letting you fall asleep now because I want to do some other things," Arizona informed as she pushed Callie over and rolled on top of her.
"Well, thank God," Callie said and smiled, "See… I told you that hot and steamy can go…" she started but Arizona caught her lips and prevented her from talking.
"You should stop talking now…" Arizona instructed before she started nibbling on Callie's bottom lip.
Callie smiled, "Yes Ma'am!" she teased and Arizona chuckled before she let her tongue slip inside Callie's mouth. Callie trailed her hand lower towards Arizona's center and when she felt Arizona spread her legs more she moaned and pushed her pelvis against Arizona's making her arch her back in response.
"You feel so good…" Arizona mumbled as her senses got lost in Callie's touch. She let her hips move against Callie's fingers as Callie's mouth muffled the moans that were leaving her throat. When Callie's fingers entered inside, Arizona broke the kiss and buried her head into the pillow but soon lifted her body up as the desire to move against Callie's fingers ran through her body. Callie's eyes darkened even more and she cupped Arizona's right breast with her left hand before she pushed her body up as well and wrapped her lips around Arizona's left nipple while her left hand pressed between Arizona's shoulder blades holding her close. Her fingers continued to pump in and out making Arizona moan with pleasure.
"Mmm… ohhh… God…" Arizona mumbled as her hips moved in sync with Callie's fingers and when trembles took over her body, Callie held her tight, enjoying the sight of Arizona's head tilted back as her walls clenched hard around her fingers. When Arizona's muscles relaxed, she rested her head on Callie's shoulder breathing heavily, disappointed to feel Callie's fingers slip out. Arizona took a few moments to calm down before she hungrily caught Callie's lips again.
"That felt like heaven…" Arizona mumbled as she pushed Callie towards the bed.
"Mmm, indeed it did…" Callie mumbled with a smile. "Don't you need to rest?" she asked.
"Nope," Arizona simply replied as her hand went in between Callie's thighs causing a long gasp to escape her own lips when her fingers met the wetness that awaited her.
"Fuck, you're so wet…" Arizona mumbled as her fingers started moving up and down Callie's slit.
"You turn me on… so much…" Callie replied intermittently. "Ahhh…mmm… Arizona…" she moaned and bucked her hips and Arizona couldn't wait any longer to slip her fingers inside. She caught Callie's lips while her fingers set a steady rhythm and noticed her own body become even more aroused whenever a new moan left Callie's throat. She moaned herself as she got a sudden urge to start moving on top of Callie.
Heavy breaths filled the room as Arizona speeded up her movements, getting completely lost in the moment, enjoying feeling Callie underneath her body and hearing the moans of pleasure that were vibrating seductively in her ears as she felt Callie's nails dig deep into the skin on her own back. It didn't take long for Callie's body to break into shivers as the peak of pleasure overwhelmed her muscles. Arizona moaned loudly feeling the tight grip Callie's walls held over her fingers and she kept on moving on top of her noticing what effect it had on both of their bodies. When the tension finally left Callie's muscles, Arizona slumped on top of her as they both tried to catch their breaths.
"Wow..." Callie let out a long exhale and giggled, "…that was so hot…" she said through heavy breaths. "It was almost identical to..." she started explaining but then stopped herself not sure if she should talk about their past.
"I had flashbacks...," Arizona said and pushed herself up to look at Callie.
"Of this...?" Callie asked with surprise.
"Yeah... we were on this bed, with red silky sheets, there were candles and wine glasses on the nightstand and I was doing the exact same things to you, and you enjoyed it a lot so I repeated the moves that came to my memory..." Arizona explained.
"It was our first month anniversary, we had a romantic dinner with candles and wine and then moved to the bedroom, and then you did almost exactly the same…"
"So you like it a lot when I move on top of you?" Arizona asked as she smiled broadly.
"Mm-hmm…, I love feeling you with every inch of my body… it turns me on so much…"
"I really like it too…" Arizona said as she caught Callie's lips again.
"Hmm, sooo… sex helps you remember things?" Callie asked with a wink.
Arizona laughed out loud, "Maybe we should test that theory a few more times to make sure it really works."
"Mmm…, indeed, let's test more," Callie said as she flipped Arizona over and caught her lips again.
FIVE DAYS LATER
The next few days flew by, Arizona still worked her shorter shift from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. because the Board didn't allow her to go back to normal shifts so soon after the brain injury. Callie and Arizona made sure to have lunch with Sofia every day and enjoyed family time every evening, lulling slowly into the happy family moments.
It was Friday, Arizona came home after her shift and decided to rest a bit on the couch while she waited for Callie to come home with Sofia later. She dozed off and ended up taking a short nap. Thirty minutes later she opened her eyes and looked around, "Was that a dream?" she whispered and sat up. She took a piece of paper and started writing. I need to write everything down, every single detail so I can ask Callie if it is true.
An hour and a half later Callie entered the apartment with Sofia in her arms.
"Arizona! What's wrong?" Callie immediately asked when she saw Arizona's face covered in tears, a box of tissues in front of her and a few used ones already on the table. She dropped the keys on the table and hurried towards Arizona.
"I…," Arizona tried speaking but her sobs were still taking over.
"Hey, hey, honey, calm down and tell me what's wrong," Callie said worriedly.
Arizona shook her head, "Nothing… is… wrong…," she said through sniffles and tried to calm down. She looked at Callie, the tears glistening in her eyes, "Our wedding was so beautiful…" she finally whispered as another rush of sobs overwhelmed her.
"Our wedding? Did you… did you remember…?"
Arizona nodded her head, "I think I did…" she said as she lifted the piece of paper she was holding in her hand. "Unless all of this is my imagination…" she added and laughed quietly trying to mask the nervousness she felt. "Can you check?" she asked, her tone a bit apprehensive.
Callie swallowed hard, "Sure," she said as she took the paper and started reading while Arizona took Sofia in her arms.
"Mama sad…" Sofia mumbled and Arizona smiled.
"No, honey, mama is just happy, these are tears of joy…" she explained as she started bouncing Sofia on her knees, she glanced at Callie and noticed her wipe a tear from her eye.
"Callie…," she called in a whisper, not sure what it meant, because Callie could be overwhelmed that she remembered, or she could be sad because none of what she wrote was anywhere near to what had actually happened.
"You remembered…" Callie whispered and met Arizona's eyes.
"I remembered…" Arizona confirmed with a smile.
Callie smiled broadly and laughed as she leaned over and kissed Arizona with excitement.
"This calls for a celebration!" Callie said and got up. "Would you like a bit of wine?" she asked.
Arizona scrunched up her nose, "Uhm, maybe very little, I really still don't like wine…" she replied as she put an impatient Sofia on the floor.
"Okay, just a little bit," Callie said as she walked across the room when a loud knock came from the door.
"Oh, that must be the food I ordered, so many things happened at work today, I didn't feel like cooking," Callie said and walked to the door.
"You don't have our dinner!" she protested when she opened it.
"Well, it's so nice to see you too Torres," Mark said, "Could I take Sofia for a bit? I'm taking Lexie to that recovery spa tomorrow and I'll stay there with her for a week."
"Oh, sure, you can bring her back before bed, right Arizona?" Callie said.
"Yes, of course," Arizona said as she walked over to Mark and wrapped her arms around his shoulders pulling him in for a tight hug.
Mark wrapped his arms around Arizona but directed a puzzled look towards Callie.
"What's that for?" he asked.
"For being my friend when I needed you," Arizona said softly.
"Umm… yeah, I still don't get what you mean…" he said as they broke the embrace. Arizona stepped back and wrapped her arm around Callie's waist.
"I remembered our wedding day," Arizona explained, her cheeks forming a dimpled grin.
"That's amazing!" Mark smiled and clapped his hands.
"Yeah, we were just about to celebrate a bit," Callie said with a big smile raising her glass.
"And I also remembered you were there for me, when I needed a moment to remember my brother."
"Oh that, well finally, you remembered something decent about me!" Mark teased and made them laugh. "It was my honor to be able to share that moment with you," he said with a smile.
At that same moment Sofia walked to him and held onto his legs.
"Dada," she called and Mark smiled and crouched down to pick her up.
"Hello my little mighty oak, wanna spend some time with dada? We can play airplane."
"Plane…" Sofia repeated and clapped her hands.
"Yes, we will play the airplane game, and you will fly through air like this," he said as he held Sofia up with both of his arms and walked around the room making the noise of a plane."
Sofia screamed with joy and happily wiggled her feet through the air.
Callie and Arizona smiled as they looked on, arms wrapped around one another.
"Let's fly through the door, and down the hallway and all the way to dada's apartment," Mark said as he proceeded towards the door. "I'll bring her back in two hours!" he yelled from the hallway.
Arizona and Callie both laughed, "Okay!" Callie yelled back and then closed the door.
"So, we have wine and dinner on the way, what else would you like to do to celebrate?" she asked as she wrapped her hands around Arizona's back and pulled her in for a kiss.
"How about we watch our wedding video?" Arizona suggested.
"Really?" Callie asked with a smile.
Arizona nodded her head, "Yeah, do you think I remember enough?"
"Oh, you remembered our vows, who cares if you're gonna suddenly discover which of our colleagues got drunk," Callie said cheerfully and Arizona laughed out loud as she felt Callie's hand pull her towards the couch.
A/N: I feel like I should inform you that there is only one more chapter left… that I still need to finish of course ;-). I myself kind of don't like surprise endings, don't know why LOL, I always feel like something's missing when I'm not prepared that the end is coming… ;-)
