Author's Headnote: I've been getting complaints about lack of character development. And I say to you, you cannot rush character development. It is a gradual process that takes plotting ahead of time to do so. But given request, Ruby will get her character development anyway, so here's the chapter.
Ruby the Renegade: Rose-Cold Rivalry, Part 2
Beacon Academy, 1:01 PM, Tuesday, Leadership Skills (In Session)
Ruby had sat down for class. Well, the second time she's at this class. The first was one that she was taking a test. Speaking of, the teacher is heading to make an announcement.
"I've overlooked your test results. It appears that some of you are natural leaders, and other's are just loners needing to learn to co-operate." The professor said, looking at Ruby.
"While I won't be saying names, I'll just say that one student in particular had received a low score on the test, and that student knows it's them. But no less, everyone can improve on their leadership. It is a burden, but one people should not take lightly." they added.
The first set of lectures came about on team building and team-bonding. Mostly organizing to get along with one's team. Although people have commented that this shouldn't be an issue, the professor has said that teams prior to the introduction of this class had trouble getting along with one-another. Well, guess that's why that professor has a job in the first place... but no less, Ruby was reluctantly taking notes. Mostly on psychology and impact of leadership roles of a group.
Thankfully this is the one class without Weiss, Yang, or Nora, so that means she doesn't receive any snark-one-upping or distractions so she can fully pay attention to the class-at-hand. Albeit it's the one class she really doesn't care for. Despite this, she takes notes anyway, she needs to learn how to handle her team well to survive these four years, and then she can go on helping Remnant by herself. Maybe she can use what she learns to get Weiss under control, sure they're rivals, but Ruby honestly doesn't want a rival. She'll continue harassing Ruby till the end of either one of their lives, which would be incredibly annoying to deal with.
But no less, she has to take this class. And she has to pass it. This is an opportunity; she isn't given any special treatment for being at Beacon early. That is exactly why Ruby isn't wasting it. But no less, learning about how to form successful friendships as a class for leadership? Well, this is most likely the basics going-over class. The next one on Thursday is most likely getting into the complicated tasks. Like tactics and strategy. Wait, wouldn't those two be the same thing? She's leader for a reason, and she's got to keep the team together.
After the lass time has passed, the bell has rung.
"And class is dismissed, your homework is to spend time with your team, and you are to send photographic or video evidence of doing so. In addition, there are two rules: You must spend time outside of school grounds, and you cannot tell your team that you're doing it as an assignment, make sure they have fun. You may go now." The professor said, dismissing the class.
After that Ruby got up and sighed. Hanging out with her team... well, what could go wrong?
Beacon Academy, 5:00 PM, Tuesday, RWBY Dormitory
Team RWBY had just came back from combat practice, Weiss humiliated herself after losing a fight to Russel Thresh. They were currently preparing to do homework, study, or play on their scroll until Ruby decided to call them over, which is now.
"Listen up, we're heading out of school grounds!" Ruby demanded.
"Why is that?" Yang asked.
"We're hanging out."
"Ooh, I knew my baby sister would come around!" Yang said in an excited tone.
"I thought you're supposed to be the anti-social one?" Blake stated.
"Blake, don't ruin this moment! My sister is getting out of her bubble!"
"Oh, sorry. Can I... not come?"
"This is a team get together, you're coming too, whether you like it or not, this includes you too Weiss." Ruby stated.
"Alright fine, but I'm going to complain the whole time. Where are we going?" Weiss said reluctantly.
"Well, where do you want to go? It has to be outside campus grounds."
"Ooh, I know a place!" Yang said.
"Alright, we're going to the place Yang is going to." Ruby stated.
"Not even putting it to a vote?" Blake asked.
"Team Leader has two votes." Ruby said.
"That doesn't sound really fair..." Blake commented.
"Well, I'm team leader, and I make the rules for this team."
"Very well... I'm still taking my book with me."
"That's fine. Yang, lead the way, we're going to that place Yang wants to go!"
"I'm so proud of you, baby sis."
Ruby growled quietly.
"Come on, I know you'll have fun." Yang stated.
"Shut up, Yang." Ruby said.
"You're going to turn that frown upside down after we're done." Yang said, leading the team to follow, everyone else is following reluctantly. Especially Ruby and Weiss. To where the team goes. Well, either way, Ruby is going to have a long night.
City of Vale, 5:47 PM, Tuesday, Downtown
Well, this is not the club. That's some good news. And it's not a bar either, which makes sense since Yang, despite Ruby's attitude is a bit protective of her. Instead, it's an old arcade. Open twenty-fours hours technically the staff only show up once a month and leave the place open. The smell of rotten food is apparent. Blake is getting a trash bag and taking it out. Meanwhile Ruby and Weiss were sitting at one of the tables whilst Yang was playing with the dance machine.
"Come on, Ruby. Have some fun." Yang insisted.
"Waiting for Blake to get back dealing with the rotten food." Ruby commented.
"Why? You have a crush on her or something?"
"No. It's just I need someone to trust taking pics of us having a good time."
"Oh, taking pictures? Guess you want to remember this."
"Ya, I do." Ruby lied. She only needs them for her homework assignment.
"Why not have Weiss do it?" Yang asked.
"Yang, you are my sister, but clearly you can tell me and her do not get along. She would be the last person I would trust with my scroll." Ruby stated.
"Oh, fair point."
Ruby was trying to not be her regular 'rude' self, although still grumpy. She is trying to actively be nice, in which she has no clue how to. Mostly because she really never made friends before. Or has ever made friends. So, doing all of this is really outside of her comfort zone. But this is something so she doesn't flunk the leadership skills class, since the professor heavily implied Ruby got the lowest score on the test.
But no less Ruby decided to take a selfie of herself fake smiling with Yang in the background. Figured more pictures = more score. So, she figured to wait until Blake comes back for more non-selfie pics. Since the one she took has her thumb in the shot.
Sooner than expected, Blake did finish up taking out all of the trash. And at that oppurtunity for her to sit down, Blake handed Ruby her scroll.
"Here, take pictures of me and Yang." Ruby ordered.
"Okay, I guess?" Blake said, sounding confused.
Ruby went over to try and play arcade games with Yang. She was always better at video-games, mostly because Ruby rarely ever plays any. She mostly focused on her studies and training. So, even the arcade dance-machine where it's all about foot-movement, Yang tends to be better at Ruby, despite her semblance being about speed. Even then, using semblances to play video-games is just cheating. And when Ruby slipped and fell, she heard the snap from Ruby's scroll.
Well, a pic is a pic. May as well continue playing games. Weiss is then seen playing one of those fighting games, in which Ruby invites herself to play, inviting Blake to take another pic.
"PLAYER ONE WINS!" the arcade machine announced.
"YES!" Weiss cheered.
Ruby growled quietly. Another pic was taken. There are questions to why Weiss is better than Ruby when it comes to these things, these questions will not be answered. But no less, the more pics taken of the events happening, the better.
"Blake, give my scroll to Yang, I want to play a game with you." Ruby stated.
"What exactly?" Blake asked.
"I don't know, just anything will do."
"Very well, then. Yang, here's Ruby's scroll, try not to break it." Blake said, handing Ruby's scroll to Yang.
"I know how to handle a Scroll, don't worry." Yang said in a relaxed tone.
Ruby was then following Blake back to one of the tables in which she went to read her book. Not sure why she decided to do that, guess she's not really much of a fan of videogames, Ruby can relate to that. She only played them to get pics. Ruby went to- oh wait, Yang has it and then suddenly a snap is heard. Ruby took a picture of Ruby and Blake sitting at the table.
Soon after that, Blake took back Ruby's scroll and reluctantly taking pictures of Ruby losing to all the various arcade games to Weiss and Yang, with the occasional bored looking Ruby pic with Blake reading a book. Hence, Yang has the scroll again.
"Okay, how about a team selfie?" Ruby asked.
"Do you even know how to take one?" Yang asked.
"Nope."
"Let me take it, then." Yang said, with the scroll on. Weiss and Blake reluctantly gathered, and Ruby fake smiled as the picture is being taken.
"So... play the rest of the games, take some pics, and head somewhere else?" Weiss asked.
"I know where we can go next!" Yang stated.
"If it's another arcade, I am going to book you." Blake said bluntly.
"Nah, it's this nightclub I regularly visit."
"Oh boy." Ruby said.
"What?" Yang asked.
"When I was heading to the dust shop, you jumped out of the building and threw all the employees out, pretty sure you're banned from there, too."
"Oh yaaa... scratch that idea."
"So... do we head back to Beacon?" Blake asked.
"Nah nah, I still got this other place to check out." Yang stated.
"Very well, let's hit there, I just want to head back and read my book in peace." Blake said.
"What? You didn't enjoy the games?"
"I don't play videogames."
"Wow, even Ruby played them."
Ruby just remained silent... never once has she been called the 'less anti-social' one. Although she does admit she had some fun in the arcade, even though she didn't win any of the games.
"Can I have my scroll back?" Ruby asked.
"Okay, here you go." Yang said, giving Ruby the scroll back, in which she puts it away.
"All of this still doesn't make us friends." Weiss stated.
"I know, I never planned on being friends with you, anyway." Ruby stated.
"Good, we see eye to eye on this."
"At least you two are agreeing on something." Yang said, trying to help the situation.
"Yang, just get us to the next place." Ruby stated.
"Fiine, at least you didn't try to be rude about it this time, I'm starting to wonder if my little sister was kidnapped and replaced with a robot copy."
"Don't be ridiculous, Yang. That's just plain stupid. Let's just get to the next place and have some fun before my lips get tired from all this smiling!"
"It actually takes more muscles to frown than smile."
"You know what I meant, Yang. Now be quiet and lead the way."
"Ah, there it is. Well, at least you have a softer vocabulary. I'll be leading the way now."
And just like that Yang went to leave the arcade, with the rest of the team following.
On their way, to the next place, a conversation too place.
"Pretty sure what we did was illegal." Blake commented.
"Huh, what do you mean?" Yang asked.
"Well, we broke into an unattended public facility and turned on the power."
"The power was already on." Weiss commented.
"And didn't you take out the trash?" Ruby asked.
"Besides, the door was unlocked." Yang stated.
"Well okay then." Blake said, shrugging.
City of Vale, 7:40 PM, Tuesday, Commercial District
Yang wanted to go to the laser tag place or the bowling alley, but then some people were blocking the entrance to both for no reason. So, instead they decided to check out a movie. Ruby took a team selfie before and after the movie. It was an alright movie, the snacks and popcorn were good, although Yang insisted on ordering fried chicken and hotdogs.
But now they're currently at the RoosterTeeth mall. It's large complex, with the theater included. It has a grocery store, various stores, etc. Basically, what anyone can find in a mall. There's plenty of stuff to do here, it's basically the super-store of the commercial district, wherst most stores have specialized facilities and stuff, this one has all-around things, albeit with a more all-around quality. Most people just go here for the groceries and the occasional browsing.
This is not what they are here for. Yang insisted that the team went to go browse for clothes shopping at one of the clothing stores in the mall. Shopping sprees... wonderful.
Ruby was just looking at the clothes whilst Weiss was actually looking for something to buy. Yang and Blake were also browsing somewhere. Although by looking at Ruby's outfit, one can be safe to assume Ruby likes to look stylish, albeit a bit grumpy. Although she's not actually going to buy anything, the outfit she has right now looks fine.
"You see anything you like?" Yang asked.
"Nah, not really." Ruby stated.
"Same here. Well, it was fun browsing at least, let's head to the next place." Yang offered.
"Let's take a pic first!"
"What's it with you and pictures all of the sudden?" Weiss asked.
"Does it matter? Get in the shot Ice-Queen." Ruby stated.
"Ice-Queen?"
"Because you act so spoiled all the time."
"I'm not sure if I should be more or less offended."
"Just get in the shot before I give you another blackeye."
"Well, there she is!" Yang said jokingly.
After that, the group had taken another selfie and went to the Book Store, to Blake's request. Maybe they'll find something there.
The book store had wooden flooring and re-enforced yellow wallpaper. With a bunch of book shelves and a register, too.
Ruby was browsing some books, not sure why she would look at the science fiction section, though. She then went to check out the low-fantasy section. She then sees this book called: 'Earth, an incredibly dull yet horrifying world!' Eh, may as well not get that, sounds like it's filled with stuff that's either too boring or too weird to comprehend. May as well, leave it on the shelf and let it be someone else's problem. For now, she's just browsing some books. Blake's been checking the romance section, though. From the looks of it, she's getting her hands on that vampire romance novel... guess she either likes romance novels, vampires, or both. Yang's just somewhere looking bored.
As for Weiss, she is most likely browsing somewhere, she doesn't care what she's interested in. Well, turns out Weiss is right next to Blake. May as well take the opportunity to snap a picture of them together, the more pics, the better grade she is going to get on the homework assignment.
"So... why exactly are you taking pics of your team?" Yang asked.
"No reason." Ruby commented.
"Now that I think about it, maybe we shouldn't just spend the rest of the time shopping..."
"That's incredibly off-topic."
"Well, it's true. Maybe we should go to somewhere Weiss or Blake wants to go."
"Back to Beacon." Blake commented.
"I want to visit the park." Weiss commented.
"The park it is, then!" Ruby stated.
"Why do you want to pick my idea?"
"Just to mess with you."
"Well, the park is beautiful from what I've heard." Blake commented.
"How about we just go and have some fun, and then we can head back?" Ruby offered.
"Sounds good."
"It's getting late anyway." Yang stated.
"Can't believe we're actually agreeing to this." Weiss said.
After that the team had decided to leave the mall, after they paid for the books that they selected out. Ruby then found a coin on the floor and picked it up. She then decided to bring it along with her.
City of Vale, 8:12 PM, Tuesday, Central Park
The central park was a large city park at the center of Vale. It had a lot of grass that's regularly tended and trees taken care of. It also has an artificial lake. And no, swimming in the lake is not allowed. And Yang had to learn that the hard way. There's also an observatory here, and across from it is a tower, in which people often mistake it for the CCT. To this day, she does not know why people think the CCT is in central park... But no matter, the park is beautiful, except the times tents are put out, in that case it's just a mess.
Ruby was sitting on a park bench, flipping her coin... well, learning to flip a coin that is. Weiss was just enjoying the view. Yang was out playing frisbee with a group of strangers. Blake was also on the park bench reading her new book. Ruby noticed it was one of those vampire romance novels from earlier. Well, she can't judge, even if it's weird. She doesn't understand how vampires would be romantic, given that they're just giant human-sized mosquitoes.
And yes, mosquitoes do exist in Remnant, and they are annoying.
But no matter, Ruby was learning to flip her coin. But after a couple of minutes, she got it right, what's weird is that she noticed that both sides of the coin are heads. Well, this is going to be useful for settling debates in her favors.
Well, she can admit, despite the efforts, she had a fun time. Ruby took another picture of Blake and Weiss who were sitting next to each other. And she's gonna get a good grade for her homework.
Of course, they really don't do much for the rest of the night as they were getting tired and the park was closing, so they had to head back.
Beacon Academy, 6:00 AM, Wednesday, RWBY Dormitory
Ruby woke up to her alarm clock beeping, and then hit off. As she went and got up. She then went to claim the shower before the rest of her team does. After she was done in the bathroom, she prepared to get dressed. Although at this point, everyone else's alarms were going off... so Ruby was mildly annoyed. She also brought that coin she found from yesterday with her back to the dorm. And she's bringing it with her, something about that coin that draws to her.
As for her team. Well, Yang has her bed hair, like normal. Blake was rushing to the bathroom, and Weiss groaned as she woke up.
"Hey, I keep telling you, it's not me, it's the alarm clocks." Ruby stated.
"Why did you get three of them? We all sleep in the same room!" Weiss objected.
"Ruby sleeps outside sometimes." Yang commented.
"That, I knew."
"Besides, pretty sure you prefer this over me waking you up." Ruby commented, flipping her coin.
"Well, at least she's stopped being rude." Yang commented.
"Yang, you're my sister, but it's suggested you don't get me on my bad side." Ruby said.
"Well, prepare to get yourself humbled as I prove myself to be the better huntress for these classes." Weiss said, inciting Ruby.
"Are you just saying that or are you actually going to prove it?" Ruby taunted.
"Last I checked, our score was 2-1."
"So... I'm winning?"
"NO, YOU DUNCE! I AM WINNING!"
"So why isn't it 1-2?"
"BECAUSE THE WINNING SCORE IS HIGHER!"
"That means I am winning."
"Let me spell it out to you for your dumb little brain. You have one point, I have two."
"Are we going by golf points?"
"NO! WE ARE NOT GOING BY GOLF POINTS!"
"Shame." Ruby said, flipping the coin. "I'll go meet you at breakfast!"
"I'll get there first!" Weiss yelled.
"You're not dressed and I'm on way to the cafeteria." Ruby said, leaving for the cafeteria.
City of Vale, 6:33 AM, Tuesday, Cafeteria
Ruby managed to make it down for breakfast first, unsurprisingly. With Blake and Yang following five minutes after her. Weiss managed to arrive last. All of them were ordering their usual breakfast as they sat down and ate.
Their team leader, Ruby, has well, matured a bit from the outing. Sure, she still has trust issues, but she doesn't try to provoke or aggress anyone through rudeness, rather she takes a page from her sister and uses humor to push people she doesn't want away, with sarcasm and taunting. Although she is still aggressive at serious times, but in most cases, she's mostly distant, and just tries to dismiss people, besides her team, in which she's starting to grow on. Guess spending one night out with her team kind of helped her be a better person, even though it's not by much.
"Ruby looks like she's in a good mood." Blake commented.
"I haven't seen her not look like she's angry like that since she was a kid." Yang stated.
"She IS a kid!" Weiss objected.
"Weiss, you're the most immature person on the team, and Ruby is younger than you."
"That's not true!"
"Well, given that you're spoiled rotten from your parents who you only love for their money, the fact that you expected to be leader just because of your heritage, and the way you feel entitled. Ya..." Ruby stated.
"Hey, aren't you supposed to be the grumpy anti-social jerk who only cusses at me for some reason?" Weiss asked.
"She did curse when talking to me one time." Blake stated.
"Cut the attitude, Ice Queen." Ruby said, flipping a coin.
"You're the one to talk!" Weiss objected.
"Hey guys! Mind if we sit here?" Jaune said, with JNPR deciding to sit down with them for some reason.
"Sure, go ahead!" Yang said, welcoming them.
"Did you take my advice, Jaune?" Ruby asked.
"Well, my fighting skills were improving, so..."
"I'm not your teacher, I don't need feedback on your improvement. It's a simple 'yes or no' question."
"I've been taking your advice, yes."
"What was that advice anyway?" Nora asked.
"Well, while Cardin pinned me down, Ruby came him and punched him in the groin, and told me to 'Man-up'." Jaune answered.
"That explains why you've started to act more assertive!"
"No offense, but it seems like you guys just appeared out of nowhere." Blake said.
"Ya, sorry. We didn't mean to sneak up on you guys like that." Pyrrha said, apologizing.
"Just make sure you announce yourselves. Why are you sitting with us anyhow?" Ruby asked.
"We just felt like it."
"Well, okay then. Just don't bother me." Ruby said, basically stated to leave her alone, as she went to flip her coin.
"Since when did Ruby started flipping coins?" Nora asked.
"I don't know, she found a coin yesterday, and just started flipping it ever since." Yang stated.
"Huh, weird."
"Just shut up and let me eat, we've got classes to attend to." Ruby said.
"Wait, did we finish our homework that's due today?" Blake asked.
"Oh." Ruby said, realizing that she forgot to do her homework.
Author's Footnote: Sorry if this chapter is sub-par. I've really been distracted by real-life whilst writing this. So, I figured a RWBY hangout chapter was over-due. And despite not being centered around Rivalry, it's part 2 anyway. Why? Because I'm not going to write part 2 a couple chapters after part 1. However, to make up for it, I did add some aspects of rivalry. Sure, it may not be my best work, and I do expect some negative feedback. But what author doesn't? Feedback does help improve writing. Well, see ya next chapter.
