Dean had left to work a job. Sam had gotten a call from a psychic friend of theirs, Missouri Moseley, and had asked another friend of theirs, Sheriff Jody Mills, to look into it, but Dean was antsy to get out. So, leaving me to look after Milo and Sam to look after Jack, he headed out to meet them. Sam was trying to help Jack control his powers to no avail.
"Hey, bud, wanna go on a walk?" I asked my son.
"Okay."
I led the boy out the door and held his hand as we walked down the street. We eventually hit town and I ended up with Milo in my arms. The kid was tired from walking so far. However, the second we passed a small park, he was practically jumping out of my arms to get to the swings. Setting him down and letting him run off to play, I found a park bench to sit on to watch. Just then, my phone rang and after glancing briefly at the caller I.D., I answered it.
"Agent Morgan. To what do I owe the pleasure?"
"We back to using formalities, Lexi? I thought we had gotten past that during your time in Quantico."
"What do you want, Morgan?"
There was a long sigh on the other end of the phone before the agent responded.
"Hotch wanted to talk to you again. We think we're closing in on the Winchesters and we need your help."
"You can tell Agent Hotchner that I'm done helping you. I'm back home and I got my son back, no thanks to you I might add, and I'm staying right where I am."
"You got Milo back? How did that happen?"
"If that's all you called for, then I'm going to hang up now, Agent."
"Wait. Wait, Lexi, wait. Um…"
"I'm waiting, but you're running out of time before I hang up this phone and lose this number."
"We think the Winchesters are staying somewhere near Lebanon, Kansas. If we're off, can you just tell me? If you hang up, I'll take it as a 'we're close'. I swear I won't ask you for anything else."
I was silent for a minute, debating what to say to him. I couldn't hang up, because then he would know that they were getting closer, but I didn't know what I could say without making myself sound suspicious.
"You still there, Lexi?"
"I'm here. Keep looking, Derek. And don't call me again."
I hung up then, heart pounding in my chest. Milo was on his stomach on the swing, twisting it up and spinning in circles, completely oblivious to the conversation I had just had on the phone. The team in the BAU were closing in on Sam and Dean. I didn't know if with my last comment, Morgan would make them back off, or if I had paused just long enough to make him realize the truth. The real question I had to consider was whether or not to tell the Winchesters about the call.
"Hey, bud, want me to push you?" I walked over to my son.
"Okay," came the enthusiastic response.
As I pushed Milo, the conversation with Derek nagged at the back of my head. I knew I should let Sam and Dean know, but I didn't want to make them have to go on the move again. The bunker was truly the safest place to stay and it would be a shame to have to abandon it. I supposed it wouldn't have to be a permanent move; we could leave temporarily until we were certain the FBI was off our trail before coming back…
I was brought out of my reverie by the ringing of my phone, this time the call being from Dean. Swallowing hard, I answered it, continuing to push Milo with my free hand.
"Hey, Dean. How's it going?"
"Good, good. Turns out it's a wraith. It got Missouri. Jody and I are going to try and wrap this up and I'll head back."
"Sounds good. That's a shame about Missouri, though."
"Yeah, she was a good woman."
"Hey, Dean?"
"Yeah?"
I hesitated then, wondering if I should really tell him about my talk with Derek. He already had a lot on his plate dealing with the wraith that had killed one of his old friends. It probably wasn't a good idea to have him worrying about the feds when there was a good chance they would be backing off anyway.
"Lexi? You still there?"
"Hm? Oh, yeah, I-I'm still here."
"There something you wanted to tell me?"
"Just… be careful. And come back soon."
"I will. Talk to you later Lex."
"Bye, Dean."
The second I hung up the phone, I felt a pit start to grow in my stomach. There was absolutely no reason for me to feel guilty for not telling Dean. I had told Morgan to back off. To keep looking elsewhere for the brothers Winchester. If he knew what was good for him, he'd listen to me and they would never have to know about the phone call. Milo had moved on from the swings and was climbing to the top of the slide and going down repeatedly.
"Come on, Milo! Time to go home!"
"Coming, Mommy!"
The toddler slid down one last time and came running over, taking my larger hand in his small one.
A week passed and I was taking a "Me Day" while Sam and Dean stayed home with Milo and Jack. I had just finished getting a mani-pedi and was heading to my car to head back after a long day when a voice spoke behind me.
"Lexi Turner?"
"Who's asking?" I replied, turning.
My heart dropped in my chest, and before I could react further, my world went dark.
