Hermione gave her a tight hug and waved goodbye as her daughter left for the train. She looked up at Ron, tears welling in her eyes, having to let her own child go for another long semester at Hogwarts was never easy. Ron hugged Hermione reassuringly and kissed her lightly on the forehead. Hermione turned away quickly and watched as Harry said his own goodbyes. She smiled softly at the thought of sharing a child with Harry, but it soon dissipated as she recalled whose arms were presently wrapped around her almost possessively. Ron and Hermione moved slowly to the other side of the platform to greet Harry and Ginny, the happy couple. Harry turned to see Ron and Hermione, as an unmatchable grin spread quickly across his face.
"Another year huh, they are already off on adventures" said Harry as he stuck out his hand to shake Ron's. Ron laughed heartily as he replied
"Just like us aye mate?"
"How have you been?" Harry enquired as they shook hands and exchanged stories of last week's quidditch match. Hermione wriggled herself free from Ron's arms and happily caught up with Ginny. Ginny excused herself from the conversation, called for Ron and they walked further up the platform so that they could update each other on the recent news of their families' occurrences. This left Harry and Hermione alone at the other end of the platform. After a brief silence Hermione mumbled quietly,
"You have a beautiful family." As if the first word of direct conversation had broken the unwanted barrier between them, Harry opened his arms and welcomed her into a warm hug.
"I've missed you Hermione, It's getting harder and harder for us to catch up," Harry whispered gently into Hermione's ear. Hermione pulled back reluctantly and Harry rested his hand on her shoulder so as to not break contact.
"We have our own families to look after now Harry. You know full well that both of our responsibilities are too great for a silly daydream like this," said Hermione sadly as she looked into his deep green eyes.
"If only we had done something sooner, with Ron and Ginny, there is just no more time for us anymore."
"Time is a funny thing Harry. Don't you think? It seems to go so fast and you never have a moment to ponder on what you're doing, what you have done, what you will do, or most importantly, who you want to be by your side when it's all over."
She reached into her pocket and pulled something out. Harry let his hand fall down to hers, squeezing it tightly while interlocking fingers with her, just like they used to. Hermione placed something hard and cold in Harry's hand as they pulled away. She looked up innocently and Harry smiled, giving her a quick hug before she returned to Ron, leaving the cold metal object in Harry's hand. He looked down to see shimmering gold reflect brightly from the metal object as his fingers closed gently. It was the time turner.
