Edward-

The day had been a bitch. All of it. I hadn't been able to get a free moment, swamped with relentless meetings, I hadn't foreseen, and the damn phone had never stopped ringing. I could still hear the trill. Annoyance getting the better of me as I reflected on my day, I closed my eyes and counted to ten, twice.

I missed lunch altogether. I'd missed my opportunity to see her. Sometimes I wished I knew her name, but others, it was more mysterious this way, not knowing, more exhilarating.

I reached Broadway, stepping free from my Uber just in time to see her and her coworker slip into a brand new Audi. Shit.

Before my driver could pull away from the curb, I waved my hand to get his attention. "Can you give me another ride?" I asked him when he cracked the window. "I didn't realize my date was leaving so early."

"Sure." The self-start car roared to life as he pressed the button on his dash. "Where are we headed?"

Avoiding his gaze, I pointed out the windshield toward the silver Audi. "Can you follow that car? I forgot her number on my desk at work. I haven't programmed it in my phone yet, and I have no idea where they're headed."

"Oookay," Sam mumbled, his confusion more than apparent by his tone. "If you were wise you wouldn't tell her that. Women are weird that way. They get all upset about the small things."

The last thing I needed was advice from an Uber driver. I didn't need relationship advice from anyone. The very last thing I wanted was a fucking relationship. I just happened to have specific preferences, and they didn't include being tied to one particular person forever. At least I'd never met anyone up to this point in my life.

My preferences didn't entail a formal introduction. It was more in the way of lurking, watching, finding new excitement. The rush that claimed me when I found a new individual after growing bored with the last one.

Diligently, I glanced at him with a nod. "True enough. I'm not a moron. She'd probably be pissed for months over it."

"No doubt."

Thankfully during the rest of the ride, silence ensued, and my full attention went to the car in front of us. I looked at the passing buildings as we drove. This wasn't her normal route or routine.

Was someone trying new things?

I didn't get long to contemplate it as the Audi pulled up in front of The Dead Rabbit. I took an extra minute digging through my pocket for my wallet, giving the women a chance to go inside and get settled.

I didn't want her noticing when I went inside and found a dark corner. I watched intently until she disappeared from view. Finally, I slipped a twenty from my wallet and handed it to the driver. "Thanks, man. Take a break on me."

"Damn, dude, it was only a five-minute ride. You sure?"

Nodding, I hopped out of the car and shut the door without another word. I dug into my pocket, searching for a quick cigarette before going into the bar. Quickly looking around as I stepped out of plain sight.

Smoking wasn't something I normally did, but I need to cool this rush of adrenaline consuming me. Every nerve in my body was alive and I took a deep breath. Lighting the cigarette I took two huge drags and smashed it beneath my heel. As the electricity popped beneath my skin, I straightened my clothing and headed toward the entrance.

Neither woman noticed as I settled into the table directly behind them. The booth provided the necessary concealment, the lighting dimmed, casting me in the shadows I preferred.

I caught her reflection in the mirror. Her gaze was on the bartender, his ass to be more precise. A spark of jealousy shot through my chest, yet her wandering eye told me something far more important.

She might have a boyfriend, but she was far from satisfied. If she were her mesmerizing eyes wouldn't be on the ass in front of her. Staring intently, I willed her to look away from the man and to me.

For the first time in my life, I wanted to be seen. That's when her eyes lifted and connected with mine.
