Anonymous asked: I don't know if you're still taking requests, but something where caroline shows up in New Orleans to take klaus up on his offer of a tour and cami confused and jealous asks around about their relationship. answers ranging from "I had no clue they were close"-elijah to "she's completely got him whipped"-kol
"I've got to hand it to you," Caroline said with a long-suffering sigh, her hand neatly tucked into his arm as they walked along the crowded street. Music poured from everywhere, and the city buzzed with an electric energy. "This place really is something else."
To his credit, Klaus didn't gloat, though she could feel the satisfaction rolling off him. Instead, he guided her toward a lively band playing on the corner. Offering her a hand in silent invitation, he only pouted a little when she hesitated. "You know you want to, sweetheart."
Rolling her eyes, she let him tug her to the makeshift dance floor, already populated with couples that looked far older. More than one woman watched them with a wistful grin, and she heard young love at least twice. Despite demanding no expectations for this trip or what it meant, she was struggling to keep that brick wall between her real life and the chaos that was Klaus.
As he twirled her, his smile bright and unburdened, she wanted more than anything to let this be her real life - Klaus included.
Until she felt the eyes boring into them. Groaning, she dropped her head to his shoulder. "They're following us again."
"They never stopped," Klaus answered lightly, gently swinging her around so she could see his brother and the bartender down the block. "We should work on your situational awareness while you're here, the city is an excellent place to get used to vampires and witches among the many."
"She's a human, I only need to be aware of any wooden stakes she's carrying or the smell of vervain. I'm this close to compelling her to leave me alone, and I would do it to your brother, too, if I could."
He shrugged. "They mean well."
Unimpressed, she glared at him. "They're annoying."
"You're a novelty to them," he explained. "If you stay long enough, they will adjust to the fact I have a…friend."
A smile spread across her lips at the heavy pause, and he refused to meet her eyes. "That sounded like it hurt to say. Do you not want me as a friend, Klaus? I remember a time you wanted that more than anything."
"You are a friend, one I hold in great esteem." To prove his point, he pulled her against him and held her close. Now, his eyes wouldn't leave her face. "And I notice you haven't answered my question."
"You didn't ask one."
"Caroline."
"Klaus."
They still swayed in place, gazes locked together as their feet barely moved. He leaned in just enough to bump her nose. "How long do you plan to remain in my city?"
She smiled again, a bit reckless and so out of her depth. Wasn't that the million-dollar question? "I think my plans might just be up in the air on that front," she admitted, nervously watching his reaction. "But if your spies are flummoxed by you having a friend, I'm not sure what…staying will mean to them."
He hung on that pause like she had earlier, his ancient heartbeat picking up pace. "As I said, they'll adjust" Swallowing, he dipped her back slowly. When he brought her back up, his eyes had landed squarely on her mouth. "Will you?"
Licking her lips, she couldn't help the rush of blood to her face at the predatory gleam in his. "Only one way to find out."
