Without moving from where he lay reclined on the ground, Klaus opened his eyes to see Caroline dangling a travel mug over his face. He accepted it gratefully. "Say what you want about demons, but we keep our commitments. When a mortal calls upon my mark and strikes an agreement, they are under my protection. You are under my protection."
She stomped her foot, trying yet again to disfigure the sharp lines her inadvertent summons had left scored deep into the earth. "It was an accident," she huffed. It was a fight she had lost several times already, but he appreciated her tenacity. "I can't imagine you don't have better things to do on a Saturday night."
"None come to mind." Leaning back on his palms, he regarded her with a cheeky smile. "Believe it or not, I've come to enjoy this peaceful little patch of life — despite your best attempts to rain down fire and desolation."
Rolling her eyes, Caroline dropped to the ground next to him. "Bonnie knew better than to leave me in charge while she was studying abroad. I guess I should thank you, since the whole 'protection' deal will probably keep the garden alive better than I would."
He raised his mug to her in a toast. "I'll do my best," he promised.
