Alternate ending to series 5 episode 3, when Uther hears Arthur coming he pushes off thoughts of killing Merlin for later, and flees. But where is he and what did he do to Merlin. A short while after that night Uther gives Arthur a message saying something he didn't expect.

AU. Uther didn't expect that after the Great Purge a powerful magic force would rise from the ashes. The Magic King defeated Uther and started his reign over Camelot, a country where magic is celebrated and those without it are killed. Merthur. When a family from Camelot move to Ealdor after King Uther's fall, everyone is suspicious and highly unwelcoming. Merlin doesn't mind Gaius' family, but maybe he's just blinded by his enjoyment in teasing the youngest one, a prat named Arthur, who seems quite incompetent at things any normal person could do, something Merlin takes great joy in telling him, repeatedly.

And the first time, sitting around the fire, the air heavy with loss and pain, that Arthur had clasped Merlin's hand in his own, he didn't recognize the way Merlin cut his eyes at him, maybe surprised, maybe pleased, but… He hadn't pulled away.
