Chapter 3: The Cost of Loyalty
Kagome slowly followed Jaken through the Shiro halls, not paying any attention to the things around her. She could faintly hear Jaken's muttering ahead of her but really didn't care to fully listen. She just silently watched him as they moved forward, and she couldn't help but wonder at his loyalty. Over the years she noticed that his loyalty to Sesshoumaru never faltered no matter how poorly his lord treated him and she couldn't help but wonder what it was about Sesshoumaru that made it worth the cruelty.
Kagome knew all too well that loyalty also had a cost. How many times had she been degraded for her loyalty to Inuyasha? She had lost count by now, and just like Jaken, she too never questioned... Only having faith that she was doing the right thing. Even going as far as making excuses for the bad behavior. The heart truly has no shame, doesn't it?
The sound of a shōji door snapping open brought Kagome out of thought. Looking over at Jaken, she watched as he entered into a large oriental designed room. Looking around curiously, she figured it's purpose was that of an office or study. The large dark oak desk and the shelf like walls that were filled with scrolls were giving her that impression anyway.
"Put the Tetsusaiga and the Meido Stone on the desk. Lord Sesshoumaru will be informed about the death of the half breed and his mother upon his return." Jaken muttered as he crossed his short stubby arms. His glare giving away his great dislike for her.
Kagome clutched the two items tighter to her chest as she looked between Jaken and the desk. "I would like to hold onto them until I speak with Lord Sesshoumaru myself."
"HOW DARE YOU, YOU UNGRATEFUL WENCH!! MY LORD HAS NO TIME TO GIVE TO YOU! YOU ARE NOT WORTHY OF HIS TIME OR ATTENTION!!" Jaken shouted, his arms flailing about as he jumped up in down. "BE GRATEFUL THAT YOU WERE EVEN ALOUD IN HIS PERSONAL STUDY!!"
Kagome cringed as his loud voice started ro give her a headache. Taking a deep breath and clinching her eyes shut, she tried to block out her beast's needs for bloodshed. Her beast didn't like his disrespect and wanted retribution. 'No wonder Sesshoumaru was always kicking him.'
Giving her head a full shake, Kagome did her best to block out Jaken's voice. She slowly walked forward and set the sword and necklace on top of the dark oak desk before looking over at Jaken.
Jaken waved his arm for her to follow and Kagome quickly walked after him as he lead her down the hall. It didn't take her long to recognize the things she had past as she was lead to the study.
She stopped when she noticed Jaken stop and open the front door of the shiro. With his right webbed hand, he made motion for Kagome to leave. "The West thanks you for your information, as well as the Tetsusaiga and the Meido Stone. As for your reward... You may leave with your life."
They stared at each other for a minute before Kagome took a step back. "I must speak with Lord Sesshoumaru... I need his help."
"Wench! Be grateful you get to leave with you life!! Now leave! Do not make this Jaken call for the guards!" Jaken seethed as he shot her a dirty look. 'As if a lowly member of the half breeds pack deserves an audience from my great Lord!!'
Slowly Kagome bowed her head as she walked past Jaken and out the door.
"Make sure the Wench leaves past the gates! A member of the half breed's pack is not welcome here!!" With that said, Jaken slammed the door shut.
Two Inu guards approached and urged Kagome forward. Kagome for her part couldn't help but wonder. 'I know what loyalty has cost me... But I wonder what loyalty will cost for him?'
