She knew what the right wish was. There was only one right wish. Any other wish, even if made with pure intent, would be turned and tainted. Like a needle in a haystack, there were a million selfish wishes and only one right wish. She had years to think about it, but most of the time, she didn't want to think about it. She was fighting on a wing and a prayer. Hoping maybe that she didn't have to make a wish at all.
But holders of the jewel were never lucky, or maybe they were? The first woman, the creator, ended up locked in the jewel in a battle never to end. Kikyo, well, Kikyo ended up cheated and dead.
All she had to do was make the right damn wish. That seemed simple enough, but Kagome knew deep down it wasn't a blessing. Her link to the jewel would also be met with a curse on her fate.
All most every wish she could make, even with pure intentions were to benefit someone. Her, Inuyasha, Kikyo, the list could go on.
"Kagome!" Inuyasha yelled, holding onto Kikyo waist, his sword dug into the ground as the massive winds blew hard against them. Naraku's body and grand powers were swirling like a tornado in its last attempt to kill them all. If he was going down, he was hell-bent on taking them with him.
Sesshomaru also had his Sword wedged deep into the soil, his head down, but he made it look effortless.
Kagome was braced on the ground, the jewel in her hands close to her chest. It's power the only thing protecting her from the harsh winds and debris swirling around her.
She wanted to save them all, wanted them to be happy, she wanted to be happy. She quickly realized defeating Naraku wasn't the worse thing on the planet.
There was only one wish, and its effect would destroy the very life they all knew. Would Inuyasha and Kikyo fall in love? Would Sesshomaru still learn his lessons? Would Rin still be alive? Would Miroku and Sango ever meet?
Would she remember them? Was their bond that strong?
The right wish would erase everything. She held all their lives in her hands. The weight of the world was in her hands. She could end it all and save them all, but as with the jewel, it comes with a hefty price. A price that must be paid.
"I will remember you," She said, more to convince herself as no one else could hear her over the angry howls of power and wind. Inuyasha could see it in her eyes, knew she was about to wish, he whispered her name.
Kagome took one last look and Miroku and Sango as they held hand bracing behind a tree. She wished she could say goodbye to everyone, to Shippo and Rin and Lady Kaede, who were not here.
Why her? It had nothing to to with Kikyo of that she was always sure of. But really, why her? Did it matter? Not anymore, at least it wouldn't in a moment.
Kagome opened her hand slightly and looked down at the tiny they. Such a small thing that could destroy the world. Her whole world, their world, their time together. She could travel through it, it could not touch her, but just as it could not control her, she could not control it.
All she could control right now was this moment, so she closed her hands, shed a tear for them all, prayed it would all work out.
"What if it never happened," She said before taking a deep breath, then she made the wish.
The world around them swished around her in color like a melting painted. Time-shifted, like a VHS on rewind, and as it did, her body began to fade, sending her back.
This was always her fate, she knew. She could only hope that after this wish, she would remember them. She knew they would never remember her no matter how linked they had been.
It was the ultimate sacrifice.
It was the right wish.
Just like that, the jewel was gone because it was never created, and Kagome was left passed out back to her time on the cold hard grown at the bottom of an unmagical well.
It was as if it never happened.
