Chapter 27

Pour your heart out in our lake

Brennan walked down the path that led to the furniture that looked out at the lake. She knew he had heard her walk up behind him. There was no way to be sneaky when walking down to the lake. She stopped just before the pebbles started.

"The last time we were here, I had never thought that we would end up like this." Booth spoke up and picked up a flat pebble. "I was so sure that we were it. That you and I would work through it." He threw the pebble and wiped away a tear that burned his eyes.

"The last time we were here-"

"The last time we were here I saw our future together." Booth interrupted her.

Brennan watched him put his hands on his hips. His eyes were fixated on the ground. "But then you told me to give you time. And I listened." He scoffed. "I fucking listened to you. I never listened to stuff like that. Even dad said that every day. I gave you your space because I- and then you left." Booth cleared his throat.

"I didn't want to leave."

"Then why did you?" Booth scoffed in disbelief.

"You know why."

"No, I want to hear you say it."

Brennan let her mouth fall open slightly when she couldn't get the words out. "You can't just-"

"I want to hear you say it."

She let out a sigh and walked closer to him, not wanting to yell. "I left- I left because I loved you too much to ruin this family." She confessed.

Booth chuckled harshly and shook his head. "That plan didn't work out so well, did it?"

"I never planned for any of this, Booth." Brennan raised her voice. "I never planned to run away, I never planned to fall in love with you, I never planned- I never fucking planned for you to forget me-"

"I didn't."

Brennan froze. "What?" She let out in a tiny voice.

"I never forgot the way you made me feel, what we did. How we loved." Booth confessed.

"You knew who I was when we started working together?"

"Of course, I knew who you fucking were, I'm not dumb. The moment I saw you everything came back. Every single fucking moment. But I didn't want to believe it, I was so fucking mad at everything, you, me, my family- we had years that we could've been everything and now we had nothing-" Booth let his voice falter him. "I wasn't sure, not until that night when you were at my apartment. But the way you looked at me, I just knew."

"Why didn't you say anything?"

"Why didn't you?" Booth countered and walked up to her. Backing her up against the tree.

"The doctor-"

Booth raised his brows.

"You were-" Brennan tried again and Booth tilted his head because he knew that she was trying to avoid the truth. "I was scared." She gave in.

His eyes played over her face. Taking in every feature. "You're not scared of anything." Booth put a hand over her head, caging her in.

"I-"

"Guys, it's dessert." Jared called out.

"If you want to keep your tongue I suggest you go back inside and shut the door behind you." Booth threatened his brother.

"Fuck off." Jared called out and shut the door behind him.

Brennan sighed and glanced down at Booth's chest. She picked at his shirt and bit the inside of her lip. "I was scared that you wouldn't- that we wouldn't be the same. But as time went on I saw how you were, what you felt.. And then I was stuck.." she shrugged and he put his fingertips underneath her chin, to make their eyes meet. "I didn't know how to say it, how to act.."

"But it's me.."

"I didn't know that then.." Brennan whispered. "And I.. As time went on, I knew there was more to it than a high school crush."

"Seth Beeley?" Booth chuckled softly and caressed her chin.

"I thought I was clever." Brennan defended herself with a soft laugh.

"You were.. You are." He smiled. They stood in silence for a while, just taking the other person in.

"As time went on I fell in love all over again." Brennan whispered so softly that Booth barely heard it.

"Anyone I know?" Booth asked with a warm smile and glanced down at her lips for just a moment.

"I-"

"Come on guys, the ice cream is melting." Jared called out again.

"I swear to God I will kill that man." Booth scolded and put his forehead against Brennan's.

"No, you won't." Brennan smiled and put her arms around his shoulders, pulling him closer. "You're too good of a man to do that."

"Am I?" Booth asked and they heard the door close again.

She nodded and played with the hair on the back of his neck. They had always somehow been interrupted every time they had gotten close to kiss. Not this time. Now they were alone, in their spot.

Booth stepped closer until their bodies were flush together. He wrapped his arm around her waist and just like that, the world felt right. Their lips collided with such intensity that Brennan felt her entire body tingle.

She pulled him unbelievably close and his lips passionately played across hers. He sucked on her bottom lip which pulled a soft moan from her tongue. The need that had been building up for years found itself in their touch.

Her tongue licked across his lip and the kiss got even deeper. He threaded his fingers into her heard and pulled gently. Another moan elicited from her lips and they pulled away with a heavy breath.

He leaned in for a tender kiss and put his forehead against hers once more. "We should go inside, otherwise he will come out here and get us himself."

"The ice cream is melting." Brennan chuckled and pushed away from the tree and the both of them walked up to the house. Neither one dared to hold the other one's hand, yet Booth's hand fell comfortably on the small of Brennan's back. Which put a warm smile on Brennan's lips.

They walked up the steps and Booth held the door open for her. Mary saw it instantly, but she knew better than to say anything. All in good time.

"We're playing bullshit." Jared called out and put down his next hand. "Two kings."

"Bullshit, son." George laughed.

"Goddamn it. Every single time."

"Because you suck at bullshit." Brennan chuckled and sat down on the chair that Booth pulled out for her.

"Like you're any better." Jared scoffed.

"She's gotten better over the years, Jare." Booth defended Brennan and sat down beside her.

They played through that round and then dealt the cards once more, dealing in Booth and Brennan. She held her cards close to her and swatted Jared's hand away. "Look at your own cards, cheater." She let out and put out her tongue.

Brennan won. She had been practising over the years and her memory is quite good, giving her an advantage at the game. Booth's distracting hand on her thigh from time to time didn't help keep her focus. He made sure no one else saw at the table. It made the both of them feel like they felt when they were kids and they were sneaking around.

When the games were over and done they all went to bed, it had gotten quite late. Brennan walked around her old bedroom. Most of it hadn't changed. It felt smaller in a way. Like she had outgrown it, even though it felt like she had never left the moment she stepped in there. She let her fingertips caress the bedframe and closed her eyes to let the feeling settle with her.

"I remember you dancing around in my shirt to Cindy Lauper, I could watch you for hours." Booth spoke up softly and Brennan was startled at the sudden sound. She tilted her head slightly to look back at the man behind her. "You would dance and then stop the moment you saw me." He walked up to the radio on her desk and turned it on, a slow song was playing, it didn't really matter which one it was.

"Because it was embarrassing." Brennan whispered softly. He walked up to her and grabbed her hand to turn her around. "And you weren't supposed to see that. I couldn't have the boy I liked watching me dance like a fool." She put her arms around his shoulders and his arms wrapped around her waist. Holding her close.

"I thought you were the most gorgeous girl I had ever seen." Booth spoke ever so softly. They swayed to the sound of the music. "Every moment I got to spend with you was a godsend to me." He smiled.

"Even when you had to pick me up at the library with my thirty books?" Brennan tilted her head with a smile.

"Even then." Booth told her. She leans in, stops just before their lips meet. Her eyes studied his reaction. I couldn't stand being in a room with you any longer without being able to touch you the way I want. She remembered the need in his eyes, the want in his touch.

Their lips touched in a tender kiss and the music let them sway. The kiss didn't have the same urgency that the kiss by the lake had had, it was more gentle and warm. He let his hands travel along her sides and up her back. They broke apart all too sudden. "I have to show you something." Booth whispered. He grabbed her hand and they shut off the radio before they walked over to his room.

She let her eyes travel around the room. The same walls, the same couch, the same old tv. "It looks the same." She whispered.

"I haven't changed anything." Booth shrugged and went over to his bookshelf. He grabbed the VCR he was looking for and handed it to her. She took it and caressed the front of it. Dust had covered the box.

"You still have it." She glanced up at him and the back at the box. The smurfs.

"Of course I still have it. Open it." Booth urged her and sat back on his bed.

Brennan held the box like it was going to break. This was everything to her. It had helped her through all the rough nights at her old foster homes and made her feel safe the days it got too much at the Booths.

She opened the box and the VCR laid there perfectly but it was covered with a bunch of polaroid pictures. Her eyes darted up at the man that was sitting on the bed and then back to the pictures. It was pictures from a few different times. She picked up the first one, Jared had surprised them in the hammock and had taken a photo of them reading. Both of them held up a hand to cover their faces.

"Jared, stop. You've taken so many pictures today." Booth spoke up and threw a bunch of leaves at him.

"Not of you guys and you were so cuddly." Jared chuckled and waved the photo around to make it develop.

"Let me see." Brennan held out her hand and Jared gave her the picture. It was a cute photo, you could see their faces, even though their hands were in the center of it. "I'm keeping this." She smiled and put it in her book.

"You took this from me." She held up the photo and scoffed softly with a smile on her lips.

"I didn't take it per say, I just sort of put it in a safe space." Booth shrugged with a smirk.

Brennan shook her head and turned her attention back to the pictures. There were photos that themselves had taken and other photos that were taken at parties or at family outings.

She picked up the last photo and held it between her thumb and her index finger. It was a picture from his birthday. She knows it was his birthday because of the dress that she was wearing. Someone had captured the moment their lips locked during truth or dare.

His arm was snug around her waist, pulling her in. Her hands were placed on his biceps. Her eyes had fluttered closed and her breath was taken away. She saw the people around them, they were in shock.

Brennan glanced up at Booth and then back at the photo before glancing back at him. "Where- How..?"

Booth shrugged. "There was apparently someone at the party with a camera and they gave that one to me."

"Why didn't you show it to me?" Brennan asked in a whisper.

"Because you would have stolen it." Booth chuckled as he leaned forward and put his elbows on his knees.

"How did you know that you had these here?" She asked and put the pictures back into the case.

"I went back here a few weeks ago, I just had a feeling that I would hid something of ours there." Booth smiled. "And I was right."

Brennan thought back to the weekend after they had stopped talking. Booth had disappeared for the weekend, she couldn't get a hold of him and after the weekend he could barely look at her.

"You saw me in those pictures and-"

"I knew I was right when I saw them. I spent weeks being angry at nothing really." He shrugged and she walked over to sit beside him. "I went home to feel.. Something.. And then I remembered the VCR case." He kept his eyes on the bookcase. Deep in though. "I think I had the photos somewhere else first but then I wanted them somewhere that was ours and that was the best I could think of."

There they sat in his old bedroom, where they had made too many memories to even count and there was something laying over them that Brennan couldn't really shake. They had kissed and when their lips met earlier in the evening everything had felt like it did way back in the 90's. Yet, now sitting in silence, she felt lost.

"I'm sorry I caused you pain." Brennan spoke up softly. "I said it in my letter, I've said it, the words, but I don't think I'll ever feel like it's enough. I hurt you more than I ever wanted to."

"Don't think I'm running away because I have lost my feelings. It's the opposite. I feel too much. I feel so fucking much for you and I can't stop. I don't know how to breathe when I think about the days, months, years that I have to spend without you." Booth quoted Brennan's letter.

"You memorized my letter?" Brennan was taken aback.

"I read it every single day for months, I was hoping for something, that you had some hidden message in the letter." Booth chuckled. "But it gave me hope that one day we would meet again. After my accident I found the letter and I knew it was someone dear to me that had written it. So I kept it safe. That's why I got so mad when you were touching that stuff, I wasn't prepared for it."

"I was just so.. Surprised that you had it on display." Brennan shrugged and picked at her nails.

Booth turned to the blue eyed woman beside him and took a deep breath. "Could we just start over? From scratch? We put the hurt behind us? Like we did in college.." he looked at Brennan with hope in his eyes. "Because I've had time to settle with it and I know your reasons behind it, it's been years and we did find each other again."

"If we're starting over from scratch you're going to have to drop some utensils when you see me for the first time." Brennan tried to hide a giggle that was bubbling up.

Booth narrowed his eyes at her and tickled her side, making her fall back on the bed. The giggle erupted from her throat and he settled on his side beside her. "Maybe a little further along than that." He smirked and leaned in to give her a soft kiss.

"Yeah?" She smiled.

They jumped further up on the bed and made themselves comfortable. They laid over the cover on a pillow each, facing each other. Their faces are inches apart.

"You always did look cute in my bed." Booth smirked and put his hand underneath his pillow.

"I bet you said that to all the ladies." Brennan smiled softly and mirrored his movement.

"Only the girl I really liked." Booth whispered and put his arm over her waist and closed his eyes.

"So, Sarah?" Brennan chuckled.

"Was that her name?" Booth smiled.

Brennan felt her entire body vibrate with love. She leaned and their lips connected ever so softly. His hand played along her waist and he caressed the exposed skin. Their tongues danced together and his teeth bit down on her bottom lip, which elected the sweet sound that he was hoping for.

They kissed for what seemed hours. Neither of them felt like they had to go further in the moment. The feeling of warmth and safety surrounded them in Booth's old bedroom and after a while they fell asleep in each other's arms.
