Humans and youki did not intermix species. Atleast, not the pure blooded upper echelon of the youki society. On the rare occasion it happened both were generally cast from their respective societies. Humans held similar beliefs, however there were some differences.
Many times, the line of taboo would be crossed for a quick rut by male youki. More often than not, the woman would end up being killed by her village, or by her own hand if she ended up pregnant. Hanyo were very few and far between.
In the West however, a human and youki had fallen in love and committed the greatest crime of either kind. They had mated. Surprisingly the mated pair were part of the reigning pack of the West, and the pack rallied around and protected their own.
The Dragon clans had claimed that the Inu had become weak by allowing a human into their fold.
Old prejudices would not die so easily, and the two years that the human woman had been sheltered within their Shiro had not been kind to her. The other youki within the shiro had shunned her at first, some even going so far as to attack her, but the Inu No Taisho took the responsibility for those in his pack very seriously and all who attempted to harm the human were either cast out or killed depending on how grievous an offense.
The claims against the Inu of the West caused much discourse across the lands. The three lords of the other Cardinal points had ended many of their treaties and agreements with the West, but it was the Dragons to the East that held the most threat.
The Lord over all Dragons, Ryukosusei, was using the perceived weakness within the West to try and stage a coup. Unfortunately for him, the Inu value loyalty above almost all else, and by this point the small human named Izayoi had won over many of those who lived in the Shiro and small town adjacent.
Other youki could not understand how this human woman had come to be a member of the Inu No Taisho's pack, but when she fell pregnant the threats began to become real. The Lady Mother had been attacked one evening while patrolling the borders and had been moved to the sky palace that she was raised in for recovery.
The dragons were violent creatures that had no problems with rutting with humans as they burned and pillaged across their lands, they would kill the women after to ensure that there would be no illegitimate clutches of hanyo. When it became known that Izayoi was not only pregnant with an inuhanyo, but that many of those in the West were celebrating it, the Dragons began to push on the defensive lines of the West. Without the extra help from the Lady Mother, it took all that the Inu No Taisho and his son, Sesshoumaru, had to keep the West from falling apart. Although Izayoi had been begged to go to the sky palace for her safety, she wanted to remain with her pack.
Very early in her pregnancy, Izayoi traveled to a nearby human settlement to retrieve human elixirs to help with her near constant morning sickness. As the village was a human one, Izayoi would have to enter the village on her own to purchase what she required. During one of these visits, she caught the eye of a samurai by the name Takemaru.
He followed her, and attempted to take her by force when she refused, two of her youki guards were quick to come to her aid, however their intervention came at the cost of the townspeople realizing that she was with youki. She was shunned from the town, however, Takemaru was making plans to take her away from the youki that were, in his opinion, holding her captive.
It was in what was expected as Izayoi's last month of pregnancy, everything started to fall apart.
The Inu No Taisho was on the front lines against the Dragons, and so it was up to Sesshoumaru to protect the Shiro.
The youki that had been left in the West were not fighters, mostly made up of young, elderly, or those who were unable to fight. Sesshoumaru had a contingent of 10 royal guards, as the threats to the West were thought to be only on the warlines. So when Takemaru arrived at the gates with an army made up of not only Samurai but Holy people as well, Sesshoumaru had the guards evacuate the youki while he tried to reason with Takemaru. A young bird youki, who had been outside the shiro when Takemaru had arrived flew as fast as he could East, looking for the Inu No Taisho to warn him of the army that had arrived on his doorstep.
Sadly there was no reasoning with the crazed Samurai, and although he fought valiantly, Sesshoumaru was eventually overcome by the amount of Holy people.
The Samurai took over the Shiro keeping Sesshoumaru caged by holy chains in the main receiving room. Izayoi had been captured. In the attempt to escape she had gone into labor. Takemaru had her brought to the receiving room, where he now sat on the Inu No Taisho's throne.
Takemaru had been told of her pregnancy and, spear in hand, he began to circle her like a shark in water.
"You lay with these monsters! Whore!" He spat at her. Sesshoumaru strained against the chains, the smell of burning flesh perfuming the air.
A long and powerful howl rent the air, intent and violence clear in the sound. Izayoi could do nothing but scream in pain as her body tried to birth the pup she carried. Sesshoumaru answered the sound with his own long howl, alerting his father to their location.
Takemaru turned towards Sesshoumaru, insanity clouding his eyes, raised the spear and thrust it through Izayoi embedding the tip of the spear into the marble beneath her. Her screams cut off abruptly, blood running from her lips as the life faded from both her and the pup
Sesshoumaru raged. His beast coming forward to try and destroy Takemaru, but the reiki within the chains held fast and Takemaru laughed as he grabbed a sword to go and fight against the renowned Inu No Taisho, tipping a brazier which caught upon the tapestries setting the room ablaze.
The fire raged around them, outside he could hear his father fighting. Fighting to get to them.
He howled in pain, Izayoi lay dead, the pup having died within her. His father responded with a low guttural, choking howl.
In the reply he knew his father had to have been greviously wounded in the battle against Ryukosusei, and he wished they had had more time. Wished that Izayoi had gone to the Sky Palace where it was safer. Wished that she would breathe. Wished he would hear the pups cries.
He barked out a warning about the miko that was keeping power to the spell caging him, knowing that his natural tongue would be the only way the message would be able to reach his sire through the deafening noise of battle and roar of fire.
A triumphant roar from outside brought his father crashing through the wall. The miko was unable to move fast enough as his father plunged the S'ounga through her. The sword screaming in ecstasy at the purity in the one it had just killed was resheathed and his father turned towards Izayoi. The seal on the floor holding Sesshoumaru dissipated in a show of pink sparkles.
Sesshoumaru watched the fires flickering in his father's eyes as he drew the Tensaiga. A fluid swipe through the air above Izayoi and the pup, the last of his youki spent, he dropped to his knees the strength leaving him.
Life flowed back into Izayoi and the pup. They could hear the heartbeats of both mother and pup, strong and steady. Izayoi's face contorted as the pains of labor began again. A few minutes more of pushing and the cries of new life filled the air.
Sesshoumaru turned towards his father, the small pup in his hands. The large claws that could slice so easily through their foes, so carefully and gently cradling the tiny babe.
"A name" Sesshoumaru said to his father, whose eyes widened, and then filled with tears.
"Inu… Inuyasha" he choked out, he knew it would not be long now before he succumbed to his wounds.
"Inuyasha" Izayoi beamed to the Inu No Taisho, gripping his large clawed hand in hers and squeezing. "Thank you"
Sesshoumaru and Izayoi with Inuyasha bundled between them to ward off the cold made their way towards a safe location in the West. Their foes had been defeated, and the Inu No Taisho laid to rest. Perhaps his father's death could usher in a new era, one where love mattered more than blood lines. Where youki, human, and even hanyo could exist together.
A small wimpering noise caused Sesshoumaru to look down at Inuyasha. He reached out and gently rubbed the little triangular ear while gazing lovingly into the pups golden eyes.
Although his father had never truly had the chance to know his mate, he would honor the memory of his father in raising his own pup with the love and pack values his father had raised him with. He knew that regardless of anything else, his father loved him and accepted Izayoi into their pack without prejudice of her species, and was overjoyed at the prospect of becoming a grandfather.
"Inuyasha, my son, let me tell you of my father, your grandfather, the one that named you..."
