This is it. The final chapter. The end. I can't believe I've finally finished.
Chapter 29
Percy was once again clinging to the wolf form of Leah's soft fur back as she ran through the forest to where the others were still in battle. It was like holding onto a really warm fluffy blanket, her warmth seeped into him and helped to relax his thoughts. What situation would they come back to? Who else had died? He let the rushing thoughts go and clung to Leah tighter.
The forrest was much darker than before, the sun had just started to set in the sky and the world began its slow descent into night. The clouds still sat on the earth and the trees that they passed on their way back were veiled in the lightest of mists. The trunks they came closest to could be seen with more detail and appeared as a somber brown, but the forrest on the edge of the woodland was nothing more than black silhouettes against a blanket of darkening white.
A flash of silver caught Percy's eye, an oddly straight branch sticking out from it, feathers on its end, an arrow.
An arrow?
What the heck was an arrow doing there, none of the vampires had any bows and the wolves weren't exactly keen on using weapons to fight either. Had some random person been hunting game in the woods?
More arrows began to show themselves, attached to trees, laying on the ground, stuck in a bush. The silver metal was easy to pick out in the dull colors of the forrest.
Gods, whoever was shooting these is a terrible shot. Percy thought.
Leah began to slow her pace, her breath was coming out in long pants and her tongue hung out of her mouth lazily. Percy slid off her back and landed on the ground to her side letting a hand rest on her back as they walked the last distance to were the battle had taken place. It was over—that was for certain—and silence had never been louder, there were no sounds of battle, no cries of victory, no screams of anguish. Who had won?
When they got closer Percy could hear them before he could see them. He recognized one voice as Carlisle's, but the other was a mystery.
"I'm sorry you missed all the fighting. If only you would have come a few minutes earlier you could have done your job and helped us fend them off." Carlisle voice was smooth. Not accusing but with hints of a weary undertone.
The Volturi...
"I wish we could have, why, we missed all of the fun." The vampire paused, sniffed the air for a second, and smiled. "I see you have one left, we'll take care of her for you. It is, of course, our job."
Percy and Leah had gotten close enough so that they could see the outlines of the figures in the mist.
"You have no need of her. She surrendered when we gave her the chance. She didn't know what she was doing was wrong, she had no guidance."
"I did not come here to give mercy. I came here to exact justice." The vampire, who Percy now realized had the backing of a small group behind him, reached out to a small—cowering girl trying to hide behind Carlisle. She leaned away from the vampires touch with fear filled eyes, the glowing red that had once been intimidating now somehow looking scared.
The vampire hesitated. Carlisle had reached a hand out in front of the girl protectively.
"You give too much. Just a moment ago she would have killed you without a second thought. If you precede to protect her I will assume you are on her side and to be considered an enemy. Make your choice."
Slowly, Carlisle lowered his hand.
"Wise as always, Carlisle." The vampire lashed out towards the cowering girl, grabbed onto her arm and dragged her out into the open.
Carlisle was silent as the girl looked at him with pleading eyes, she had no tears to spend. She had nothing left, she was alone.
Desperately, the girl looked out into the forest one last time, her glowing eyes sweeping the shadows for anything that could save her. They locked onto Percy's.
A hand cut through the mist and her eyes turned dark as her head dropped to the ground. Percy winced and looked away from the gruesome sight. He could hear the dull thud as her body fell to the ground.
When he opened his eyes again he found the vampire who had just killed the girl looking at him strangely. Percy's blood ran cold, he couldn't allow the Volturi to find out who he was. He should have turned back and left when he had the chance.
The vampire had short cropped black hair and dark red eyes, his pale white skin was clear of any blemish. He sniffed the air again, eyes locked onto Percy's the whole time. Then, surprisingly, his nose curled up in disgust.
"Two more wolves." The vampire turned away. "You all smell the same."
Percy released a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding. The vampire had smelled Leah's scent on him and must have thought that he was a wolf as well.
"We'll take our leave now. Till we meet again." The vampire said with a dip of his head. He turned on his heal and slowly disappeared into the white backdrop of the woodlands, his Volturi friends following behind.
Everyone was silent for a few minutes, until they were sure that the Volturi were really gone.
Percy was the first to speak again, he laughed nervously for a moment, "That was a close one."
"Percy! Leah! Your alive!" Alice exclaimed, a joyous smile on her face. "You'll never believe who's here Percy!"
Percy and Leah walked closer to the group so that they were standing right next to them. Almost everyone had some sort of injury, Jasper was quite literally holding his right arm. Percy really hoped he would be able to reattach it. The wolves were behind the Cullens, they seemed to have taken the brunt of the battle with bloody coats and broken bones and deep scratches. But only two had died, one was Seth, the other was a wolf he didn't know. When Percy and Leah had left it seemed like the group was in worse shape than how they looked now, what had changed?
"Who?" Percy asked.
"Us Kelp Head."
Percy whipped his head around to the sound of the voice. He would recognize that voice from anywhere, but there was no way she could possibly be here. How in the world did the Hunters of Artemis end up in Forks Washington.
Thalia and the rest of the hunt slowly filed out from the forest coming into full view in front of Percy. Thalia's spiky black hair and electric blue eyes were a welcoming sight.
"Thalia! I can't believe your here!" Percy walked over and pulled Thalia in for a hug. "You don't look a day older than the last time I've seen you."
"Ha ha very funny." Thalia drawled. "You keep some strange company these days Percy."
"I like to keep things exciting."
"You got plenty of it today. Your lucky that one girl, Alice, saw us coming in a vision and told us how to help." Thalia glanced at the Alice. "We probably would have considered everyone here as monsters, but when she asked if we were like you we knew something was up."
"Like me?" Percy asked.
"A demigod."
Us demigods and our crazy lives.
But finally, it's all over.
Well... for now.
...
...
...
Later that day the entire group met on the beach of La Push. The ocean breeze pushed away any mist that hung over the sea, leaving a clear view of the sunset. The burning ball of fire was on the edge of the horizon and the water burned with a bright orange trail leading to where they sat on the beach. It glimmered with every swift movement of wind that swept across the top of the ocean. The sky blushed orange on the edge of the world and the long rays seemed to be reaching up into the twilight, giving one last fight before the darkness overcame the light.
Smooth waves curled over top and crashed becoming whitewash, the dull roar of it was a soothing sound to Percy's ears.
Edward and Bella had made it back not long after Percy and Leah. They told their story about how they defeated Victoria and beckoned Percy and Leah to then do the same. They complied. Then Thalia had made fun of Percy for being an idiot and he (of course) retaliated by calling all the archers horrible shots, (bad idea) because it had turned out that there was such a thing as practice arrows that don't kill and it was also a lucky coincidence that the archers just so happened to have a few on them. How wonderful that they came so well prepared (not).
But in the end it wasn't actually all that bad, the arrows hadn't really hurt that much and it was fun to see his cousin again and let loose a little. It was nice to forget, if only for a moment.
Percy's feet sank into the soft sand with every step forward. He looked at everyone there, his eyes settling on Jasper. Despite his missing arm Jasper refused to let it stop him from enjoying his time at the beach, sparkling like someone had exploded a giant glitter bomb over his entire body. His good arm was wrapped around the smaller sparkly body of Alice.
He's gonna need a lot of stitches. Percy thought. But for now the white bandage would suffice.
Percy turned to Leah who walked to his right, she looked out into the sunset, lost in thought as the colors of the sky were reflected in her eyes. He put an arm around her and pulled her flush against his side.
"So... is this her?" Thalia asked. Percy almost jumped, she had snuck up on them from the left side.
"Yeah, this is her."
"Nice to meet you, I'm Leah." Leah held her hand out for Thalia to shake, she grasped it firmly.
"I'm Thalia, but you already know that. I don't know what made you think falling in love with this idiot was a good idea but I can see that look in your eyes." Her voice turned softer for a moment. "I've seen it before."
Thalia's voice was hard again, the soft side gone as quick as it had come. "Treat her right, alright Percy. I'm happy for you." She smiled at them. "She's a good one, don't let her slip away."
"I wouldn't dream of it." Percy smiled back at Thalia and with a wave of her hand over her shoulder she had turned around and was walking back to the Hunters of Artemis. He watched her walk away with a fond smile on his face, his cousin was pretty cool. It had been nice to see her again when he was more like himself, not deep in depression like he had been earlier in the year.
Percy and Leah reached the last bit of dry sand before the place where the water struggled to reach further onto the beaches shore. Water swiftly came up the smooth dark sand, slowed down, stopped just before their feet and fell back into the ocean again.
Percy sat in the sand. Leah sat next to him, his arm still wrapped around her shoulder. The gentle breeze blew stray strands of hair away from in front of her face. Percy unconsciously held his breath, she was so beautiful in the orange light of the sunset.
She glanced over at him and caught him staring, a coy smile on her lips. "What?"
"Your amazing."
Her cheeks turned red. "Your not too bad yourself." Leah said quietly.
Percy looked deep into her oak brown eyes. She looked back just the same. He held her gaze as he looked because as he stared he saw a light in Leah's eyes. He saw a bright light, he saw a future. A wonderful future full of laughter and joy and pure bliss and everything rested in her. In those eyes was where he wanted to be, he wanted to wake up every morning to her looking at him like that. This was it for him, he realized, this was where he wanted to be.
"I love you, Leah." Percy whispered.
"I love you too Percy." Her voice was hot breath on his face and then he was leaning closer and she was too. He closed his eyes as their lips met softly and she melted into him. He wrapped both arms around her and they laid back into the soft sand.
They pulled away for air, faces still inches apart and eyes open wide. They stared for another moment and she smiled. Percy felt giddy with joy as he smiled a big crooked smile back.
He looked into those eyes and saw his future.
He looked at her and saw a beautiful life.
In her he saw everything.
