Naruto - 3 years old
Naruto was a deep sleeper. His dad always teased him about it. How he could sleep through the awakening of the animal kingdom, the big bang, the explosion of seals and Jiraiya-jiji's snoring. Naruto has no idea what the others meant but if his dad compared it to Jiraiya-jiji's snoring, then it must be loud. So basically, he was usually a very deep sleeper but for some reason, that night when he had a sleepover with his new friend Hinata, he woke up at the slightest sound.
Opening his eyes to a towering figure shadowing Hinata's futon was not good for his heart. Naruto blearily stared up at the dark form as he rubbed his eyes to clear the sleep away. His fear heightened when he opened them to find nothing has changed.
"Wha-what you doin' mista?" He pushed his blankets away and began to quickly crawl towards his new friend.
He was puzzled by the man's presence. Something felt very wrong. A tingling feeling at the back of his head was urging him to run away. To get as far away from this man as humanly possible.
But he can't leave Hinata. She was nice and fun to play with. So he can't leave her alone with this suspicious person that was clearly not a part of Hinata's big family.
"Shit..."
Naruto ignored the man as he single mindedly tries to urge Hinata awake. Her eyes immediately flutters open at the movement. She gasped in fear the moment her eyes were open.
The door to Hinata's room slid open and another suspicious figure with half their face covered entered.
"Why the hell are you taking so long?" They hissed, voice low and deep implying they were men.
"What do I do with this other kid?" The one standing over them replied back, pulling Hinata out of her futon by force.
Naruto jerked back in shock at the sudden action. His stomach was clenching in anxiousness at their current situation but it did not stop him from trying to stop the man from scaring his new friend.
"Hey! Let go!" He pounced on the man but another hand grabbed onto his pajamas and threw him into a wall. Naruto whimpered breathlessly as pain began to invade his back.
"Idiot! We came for the girl, so just kill the kid and get it over with!" The man who threw naruto hissed dangerously as he brought out a kunai.
Naruto gasped as he tried to scrambled back in fear to create some distance. It was futile as a wall block him from moving any further. Confused and afraid, Naruto impulsively dashed forward.
The dangerous man was taken by surprise and that allowed Naruto to run pass him. The boy made his way towards the other bad man and tackled him to the floor, freeing Hinata from his grasp.
"Run!" Naruto shouted at the top of his lungs, gripping the bad man's legs like his life depended on it.
Hinata scrambled to her feet and quickly tries to escape the room to find help but the other man blocked her path. She tried to run in-between his legs but the man was too quick for her three year old body and she was once again in his grasp.
She tried to fight back but her tiny arms held no strength and it only resulted in angering the man further.
He slapped the girl in the head, silencing her with pain and fear.
Naruto saw it happened and tried to save his friend once again but a kick to his stomach left him paralyzed in pain.
He curled tightly, biting back a fearful and pained sob. He had never felt such pain before. A scraped knee could never be compared. He could only hope that the pain would eventually subsided.
"You can deal with the boy but I'm leaving." The man holding Hinata captive said.
A click of the tongue. "Whatever."
The man who held Hinata bolted towards the back door, dropping a piece of paper before flickering out of sight.
"No offense kid."
Naruto knew in that moment that he was about to be killed. Just like all the stories Jiraiya-jiji had implied, he will not be coming back home. A whimper escaped him at that realization.
(Unknowingly, his head began to pound insistently as his blood boiled. His eyes flickers from that of a beast to his usual blue.)
The attacker did not notice these signs as it was too dark to perceive it. If he did, he would've hesitated before he went for the kill.
Naruto stared wide eyed at the approaching kunai, finally allowing the frightful sob to escape him.
"Papa..." He whispered before it turns into a scream as his body exploded into a series of surging pain.
The man jerked back in shock as something red lashed at him out of nowhere. He glance at the sobbing child and heard the approaching footsteps. He consider his options and decided that it wasn't worth his effort to kill the boy off.
He turned to leave when suddenly, the air shifted as the back of his hair stood up on ends. He turned slightly to find the cause and was met with demonic red eyes.
He couldn't even bring up his kunai to protect himself before a sharp pain to his neck ended his life instantly.
The man fell to the floor, lifeless.
Minato only gave the body a mere glance before something caught his attention. His blood ran cold at the sight of a piece of paper.
"Naruto-kun!"
He ignored Himari's arrival and proceeded to do a series of hand signs.
"Wind release: smoke dome." He took a deep breath in before releasing a powerful surge of smoke towards the paper, surrounding it in a small but compact dome.
"Yondaime-sama?!"
"Papa..."
"Himari-san, please cover Naruto."
The sounds of hastened steps told Minato that she heard his order. Assured that his son was in capable hands, Minato turn his focus entirely on the smoke dome.
Any second now and there would be...
A resounding boom emitted from within the shell of smoke as spots began to appear on the dome's walls. Debris were sent flying as the mansion's walls shook at the powerful explosion. Minato gritted his teeth as he sent more chakra into the jutsu to close the spots that appeared.
It lasted for only a few seconds but it felt like he had wasted minutes.
Once he make certain that the danger had passed, he released the jutsu and swiftly turns towards his son. He frantically search the boy for any injuries, feeling a hot wave of anger at the sight of his pained expression.
Comfortingly, he pulled Naruto into his arms, running his fingers through his son's blond hair as he utter reassuring words to quietened his child's heart wracking sobs.
"It's okay, Naruto. Papa is here. It's okay."
His muttering paused when he felt a familiar boiling hot chakra under Naruto's skin. He gently lifted Naruto's pajama and grimaced at the sight of the seal. It seems like the kyuubi's chakra within Naruto had lashed out after sensing danger to his jinchuriki. Fortunately, that was all it did.
It concerns him that he wasn't able to detect it immediately. Only noticing after he had calmed down. He needs to sharpen his senses to better differentiate between the yin and yang chakra. If not --
"Yondaime-sama, I apologize for letting this happen. Unfortunately, I cannot give you a formal apology as I have urgent news."
Minato stopped examining the eight pentagram seal and turned his attention to the Head of the Hyuuga clan's wife.
"My husband have gone to catch the man who kidnapped our child. I worry that something unforseen might happen..."
Himari's expression was pinched in worry. The side surrounding her blank eyes were strained as veins popped out like roots. She kept on glancing to the side, where it leads to a forest.
That was enough prompt for Minato to quickly take action.
Minato gently touched her shoulder in reassurance. "I understand," He passed Naruto into Himari's welcoming arms and stood resolutely. "Please see to it that he gets treatment."
She bowed slightly. "Of course, Yondaime-sama. Thank you."
"Papa..." Naruto called towards his father weakly, little arms reaching for his long coat.
Minato glance at his boy and smiled reassuringly. "It's okay, Naruto. I'll be back soon."
"Hinata...chan..."
"Don't worry. We'll bring her back safe and sound." He gave him a thumbs up before flickering out of sight.
Minato hated the fact that he had expected the peace treaty to be a hoax. It was one of the reason why he had tested the two early arrivals. By the end of their short impromptu tour, he trusted them enough to weaken his disguise and revealed himself to them. In the presence of those two young ninjas, he kept his spirit positive. Unfortunately, his hopes were immediately shattered into tiny pieces when he met the representative in person.
Disrespectful, arrogant and antagonistic. If the Kumogakure had truly wanted the peace treaty, they would not have idiotically sent such a hostile person to a future ally seeking peace.
He could not believe their audacity.
But what's more unforgivable was Minato's lack of insights. He had dangerously assumed that the enemy was going to aim for the Uchiha clan. They showed a particular intense interest in Shisui's eyes and Kakashi's covered eye.
If they had any evil intention towards their village, he would have expected them to aim for the sharingan. The Hyuuga clan had come to mind but he dismissed the possibility. Unlike the Uchiha clan, it was harder to kidnap a Hyuuga member with the byakugan intact after a retrieval because of their curse seal. The enemy would have to aim for the main house, which he had believed that the Raikage would not risk even with his interest in unique kekkai genkai.
His assumptions were solid and yet very dangerous. And now because of that assumptions, he had allowed danger to come within reach of his son.
He shouldn't have jumped to such conclusions.
Minato gritted his teeth and picked up speed. It wasn't long before a clearing was within his sight. Upon his arrival, he witnessed a body being thrown into a tree, shattering it into splinters on impact.
He noted that almost all the bodies were dead, leaving one lone man desperately trying to defend himself from Hiashi's righteous fury.
He took a moment to study the man and hated the fact that he had to intervene.
"Hiashi! Stop your hostile actions!"
Hiashi froze, his palm inches away from his enemy's heart. He glance towards his Hokage in silent question before dropping the full force of his glare towards the cowering man. He did not make an attempt to move away.
"Hokage-sama," Hiashi started through forced calmness. "This man has made an attempt to kidnap my daughter and harmed an esteemed guest in my own home."
Minato walked around a dead body (it's neck awkwardly bent) as he approached the clan head.
"I understand your anger very clearly, Hiashi," He made a brief eye contact with his friend. The cowering man before them were oblivious to the real truth behind his words, but Hiashi understood it clearly. Reluctantly, he lowered his palm. "But we can't allow them to have any more reason to fight us."
Hiashi's frown deepened as he begrudgingly took a step back from the disgraceful man and quickly turns to pull his trembling daughter into his protective arms.
Poor girl was sobbing into his chest. Tiny hands fisting her father's haori tightly. Such sights always left Minato feeling the boiling anger under his skin ready to erupt. But he shut those doors quickly before it could really flood like waves.
The preparator who inflicted such fear in a child was eyeing both Minato and Hiashi warily. When he saw that they had stopped all hostile actions, a smug look began to stretch over his battered face. He quickly got on his feet and stared down at them through his bloodied nose.
"Haha...When I get back to my village, I swear this godforsaken village will be --" He choked on his words as he bent forward wheezing in strain.
Minato was immediately at his side as he examine the problem. He paused in his inspection when he felt a hint of hostility at his right side. He turned to find one of the fallen man had their hand raised in a seal.
Realization struck him as he quickly make an attempt to open the Kumo Head Ninja's mouth but Hiashi stopped his hand from making further contact with the (dead) body.
Minato pursed his lips as he dropped the body and turned to the other conscious man, only to find him laying flat on the ground motionless.
He turned to Hiashi with a grimace in hopes that the other man was still alive, but was unfortunately met with a shook of his head in negative.
A spike of hot anger flowed into Minato. "We've been fooled."
Minato clamped down on his raising anger as he marched through the Hyuuga compound and made his way straight to the loud voices in the distance.
He had been planning for a way to salvage the situation without any casualties. He was dealing with a sensitive situation that could lead to another war, something that his village did not need nor want. He had explicitly said that he should not be disturb. Even Danzo had the decency to leave him alone instead of harping in his office at the golden opportunity to wipe out the Kumogakure.
Unfortunately, someone did not understand his simple order when Kakashi came tumbling in his office with news that the elders from the Hyuuga clan had thought up of a brilliant 'plan'. It was so brilliant that Minato had to excessively make use of his image training to avoid hurting innocent bystanders.
He turned a corner and one such innocent bystander jumped at his sudden appearance.
"Hokage-sama!" The man bowed, eyes flicking to the door behind him in nervousness.
"Open the door please."
The man quickly straightened his back and nodded. "Right away!" He turned and slid the door open. "Hiashi-sama, esteemed elders and Hizashi-sama, Yondaime-sama has arrived."
Minato entered the room and it quickly fall into silence. The man made a quick bow before exiting the scene, closing the door on his way out.
Minato isn't the type to glare too often, but he could make an exception this one time because apparently everyone in the room possessed not a single amount of brain cell that could be called their own.
He allowed the silences to linger, making them realize how irritated he was towards them. Hiashi and Hizashi both sported an ashamed look. Although the latter had quickly shifted into one of determination.
The elders did not show any sign of acknowledging the reason for his ire. He wonders if there's a limit to his image training before his reality got a bit hazy and the images becomes real.
The silence, although tense, allowed him to regain his composure. Once he was confident in his ability to not let his anger overtake him, he opened his mouth to speak.
"Hokage-sama, what are you doing here?"
Minato audibly snapped his mouth shut, to clearly show that he had been interrupted.
Hiashi and Hizashi's lips thinned at the urge to scold the elderly but they held their tongue to avoid worsening their situation. They were both mildly horrified at the blatant disrespect the elders had showed their Hokage.
Minato inhaled deeply through his nose and ignored the elderly's question. Instead he addressed the head of the clan.
"Hiashi, I've gotten news that the clan had planned to send a decoy to cover up this mess?"
Hiashi's face instantly fall into a grim expression. "Yes, Hokage-sama. However, it has not been finalized yet. We are still discussing the matter at hand." The tightness around his eyes showed how stressed he was at the situation. Minato could relate.
"Whose idea was it to send a decoy without my input on it?"
"Hokage-sama, you do not need to concern yourself with this. This is a clan matter and problem, so we ought to solve it ourselves." One of the elders in the back replied, a little more respectful than the one standing before Minato though not by much.
"How is this not my problem when it involves the whole village? Are you that egoistic to think the world revolves around you?" Minato took another deep breath before he unleashed any more biting sentences. He raised a hand to silence an elder who was about to refute. "Be that as it may, this decision should not be made by the clan alone. The Hyuuga clan might have been targeted, but it is clear that Kumogakure had something else in mind. This is a delicate situation which could lead to war that should not be discussed only among yourselves." He slightly raised his voice at the last sentence to emphasize on the folly of their action.
Another beat of silence settled within the room before the elder infront of him speak once again.
"If that is the case, sending a decoy to the enemy would instantly solve this problem."
Minato stayed silent as he gave the man a chance to elaborate.
"They will not be able to get our eyes, nor will they have any rights to declare war when we have met their condition. They demand the Head of the Hyuuga clan, so we deliver them the Head. It would stop the hostility altogether"
Hearing the elder's explanation made Minato wonder how the man before him could possibly be in the same generation as the warmonger Danzo. The way he thinks was a little too pacifistic. Not that it's wrong, but sacrificing a soul for that pacifism is where he draws the line.
"Why would you result in taking such drastic measures when there are other possibilities we can consider?" Minato's eyes narrowed as he watched the elders' reactions.
"Time is running out and if their demand is not met -"
Minato raised a hand to silence the elder. "That does not give you the right to make decisions without my consultation." He intervened sternly.
The air around them began to grow heavy as some of Minato's chakra began to exude from him due to his increasing exasperation.
"I have already figured out a way to solve this problem without any casualties on our side." He began calmly. "We should be in the meeting room right now to discuss this if you had come to me about this plan earlier."
Hiashi's eyes widen slightly in surprise before he immediately plastered on a neutral but stern look.
"Hokage-sama, please accept my apology for not seeking your presences earlier," He bowed, Hizashi following his lead immediately. Some elders followed their example, but most stayed upright. "I will make sure that this matter will no longer be discussed and we can proceed with your solution to this crisis."
Minato's eyes narrowed at the elders who stood their ground and had the audacity to stare down at him. He can sense that their plan wasn't entirely out of pacifism, but held malicious intent. His eyes scrutinized the room and stopped on Hizashi's bowed head.
"Rise. I accept your apology," He turned to leave. "We'll be holding a meeting in two hours."
"Understood."
"Alright. Good day to you."
"To you as well, Hokage-sama."
"How many weeks have we been thrown in jail, Kei-chan?" Ryota drawled.
"It's only been three days, Ryota." Came the exasperated response from his companion.
"Are you sure? I feel like it's been weeks."
"We wouldn't be talking like this if it were."
"Yish, talk about dark."
A tired sigh.
The sound caused Ryota to finally turn his attention from counting the ceiling to his friend. There were dark circles under her eyes, implying that she had not been resting since the day they got thrown in jail. Her eyes kept on glancing towards the door at the end of the hall, fingers fidgeting and knees unable to stay still even though she was sitting cross legged on the ground.
Seeing her in such a state causes him to almost sigh himself but he resisted the urge. As worried as he was at their current situation, driving themselves tired to the point of extreme exhaustion would not help them in the long run.
"Kei-chan, stop worrying."
She scoffed with a roll of her eyes. "Not everyone is as carefree as you, Ryota."
"Keiko."
Her face fell at the light scolding in his tone. Shoulders slumping, she leaned back on the wall and closed her eyes.
"Sorry..."
He waved a hand dismissively. "It's fine. I know you're worried and all but the Raikage promised nothing will happen to them."
Keiko's face scrunched up, a thinking habit that only appeared when she felt relaxed or too exhausted to care.
"How can we be entirely sure? After this..." She waved her arm at their situation, expression grim. If he didn't know her as well as he does, he would have thought that she was about to cry.
Ryota understood what she was trying to imply. She wasn't dumb, neither was he. They were sent to Konoha ahead of time for a reason. Them being the only ones alive is for a reason.
Everything…everything seems like a carefully crafted plan to ensure that the group that went on this mission would not come back to the village breathing the air of life again.
Except for Ryota and Keiko. But something about their situation seems to --
The steel door at the end of the hallway squeak in strain as it opened to reveal a blank faced Hokage.
Ryota quickly got on his feet and attempted to portray a confident gait. In front of him, Keiko did the same. The almost lifeless gaze she held for the past few days flicker to life at the sight of the man who could hopefully give them answers.
The Hokage -- he was oddly alone -- stopped at the edge of their prisons, both of their cells within sight without leaving his back to the other.
He should have expected the friendly aura would instantly disappear after what they had done.
(So please go away, little stabs in his heart.)
"Guess we're not getting that second tour, huh." He grinned. He knew what would happen to traitors. It might not had been their intention but his village still made the choice to antagonise the Leaf village.
It would suck if this incident caused a war to break out between the two villages. No way was their orphanage's head mom strong enough to provide for so many orphans if that were to happen. The war needs to be avoided at all cost.
And if there's one thing he had learned about the Yondaime, it was that he could be reasoned. There's still hope to fix this disastrous situation.
"Considering we're still alive, perhaps there's still some use of us?"
Keiko briefly glance his way before settling her stare back on the Hokage. His face was carefully blank, eyes sharp as though he was bringing judgement upon them.
"Yes. I hope you will cooperate to ensure that we can come to a peaceful conclusion."
Ryota hummed. Not the least bit surprised by the hidden implication within the Yondaime's statement. But to ensure that his guess was proven correct, he took a hike and ask.
"And what might this solution be, Yondaime-sama?"
Yondaime blinked, the gesture oddly slow. "…We will send you back to your village…given that you testify for our innocence." He said, carefully blank without hinting at his true feelings about the plan.
"In short, we are the sacrifice to ensure that this end peacefully."
"Yes." The answer came quick and simple. Leaving no sense of false.
To hear it almost hurts, but he...no, they were grateful that they could be of use. Not to the Leaf village, but to their own. With their sacrifice, they could prevent a war. Obviously, that is their purpose for coming along in the first place.
Either the Leaf would use them in such a way as the Yondaime had said or their village would put the blame on them to avoid any strings attached.
Ryota knew in his heart the answer he was about to utter. He also knows Keiko's answer but he would not assume on such an important decision. He turned to her and was met with a resigned and determined gaze.
"Alright, we will cooperate, Yondaime." She said, lips pursed but her gaze did not falter as she answered the Hokage.
Yondaime nodded once. "Thank you. Tomorrow we will depart to meet with the Raikage in a neutral country, the Land of Hot Water. Get some rest and --"
Ryota interrupted, his hand gesturing to speak. Yondaime stopped mid sentence and stared at his prisoner almost in curiosity. "Can we have some ramen? A nice last dinner would be great." He said with a grin.
Yondaime blinked once again before he nodded in agreement. Ryota cheered while Keiko sent him an incredulous stare before collapsing into amusement.
"If that is all, I will see you both tomorrow morning."
They both watched as the Yondaime leave, dropping the silent bomb for a few moments.
"I guess, this is how we go..."
Keiko chance him a glance, a small sad smile on her petite face. "Yeah..."
"Nice knowing you, little sis."
"Not so much for me meeting you but sure."
"Ouch."
Minato absently stroke through Naruto's blond hair as he stared at the moon outside the hospital window.
The serene sight of the moonlight lighting the dark room filled him with a sense of calmness that he had always appreciated since he was younger.
In the haze of his childhood memories, he remembered how much hate the moon received from the village elders. It was still a mystery to him as to why the people from his previous village hated the moon. He would've hated the moon as well if it weren't for his mother. His kind and gentle mother that always reminded him to not let others influence his own judgement.
At the thought of his mother, a memory surfaced. It's been so long and yet he could still hear the melody. Like a gentle breeze in the starry night, the humming of a mother's lullaby resounded within a small room of her sleepy child.
"Ugh...papa..."
Minato looked down in worry when he heard the distressed sound. Naruto was squirming in his sleep, face scrunched up in pain and sweat trickling down his forehead. He tries to soothe the nightmare with his touch but it wasn't enough as Naruto reminded restless.
The moment brought out a filling of nostalgia within Minato. Once again he heard the soft voice of his mother.
"Run little child, RunThe light will disappear from the sunAnd the bright moon openRevealing a rabbit, it's chain broken."
Minato repeated the words as he sang softly.
"Hide little child, HideOr the devil tree will suck you dryAnd trapped in a land that's frozenCan only wait for the chosen."
The lullaby rang in the night as Naruto's squirming stopped. His face flattened into a peaceful expression as he burrowed into Minato's warm hand.
"To destroy white rabbit's devotion."
By the end of the lullaby, the nightmare had been banished from Naruto's dream as the boy fell asleep soundly.
Minato's face softened at the sight. He leaned forward and gave Naruto a kiss on the forehead.
"Sleep well, Naruto."
"Such a morbid lullaby," Kakashi's voice pierced through the silence as the teen appeared infront of the opened window. "When did you learn that song, sensei?"
"Hm. The lullaby just came to me...it was sung by my mother." Minato stared at Naruto but not truly seeing his son as his mind wander to a forgotten memory. "She had always sung this lullaby whenever I had a nightmare."
Minato hummed the melody. The more he tries to recall the lullaby, the more memories regarding it began to unfold. He felt a little light-headed at the fact that he remembered something precious that he had once lost. He finally has something of his mother close to his heart.
"You should rest too, sensei."
"Hm. In a moment." Minato replied back absently.
Kakashi stared at his mentor blankly before making his way to a vacant sofa. He took a seat and allowed his silence to take hold.
Minato sighed as he realize the meaning behind his student's silence. "Why don't you go and get some rest, Kakashi-kun." He tried.
"Hm."
"I'll rest in an hour or two." Minato added in hopes that it would be enough to satisfy the teen.
It did not as Kakashi look at him in doubt with such transparency that it could be seen through his half covered face. "The moment an hour or two passed, your mind will be too busy to rest by then." He abruptly stood from the sofa and swiftly made his way to Minato's side.
"I promise I'll --" A quiet yelp cut his sentence short as Kakashi suddenly grabbed his arm and pulled him towards the sofa. "Wait --what..." Minato only had time to blink before he was forced to sit down on the sofa.
Kakashi towered over his mentor and gave the man a stern look. "Don't move." He ordered.
Minato stayed as he was asked (ordered) and watched as his student pulled out a spare pillow from under Naruto's bed and threw it towards Minato.
He easily caught it in the air.
Kakashi took Minato's place beside Naruto and pointedly looked at his teacher as though he was daring him to challenge his order.
"Sleep, sensei. Tomorrow is gonna be a long day." Kakashi said beside a frowning Naruto. The frown was quick to disappear once Kakashi placed his hand on top of his head.
Minato pursed his lips as he stared at the pillow in his hands. He didn't feel the need to sleep yet.
Kakashi should be the one resting. He has been going around at Minato's command investigating the Hyuuga accident. The teen must be feeling exhausted. None of them really had any proper rest since the kidnapping.
Minato raised his head, ready to order Kakashi to rest instead but something stirred within him that made him paused.
Sleep.
Kyuubi.
Just go sleep and wake up early, idiot.
But...
Anymore buts and I'll knock you out myself. You are way to damn noisy for me to sleep peacefully.
Minato blinked sluggishly as he finally allowed his body a moment of respite. That's when the exhaustion collapsed onto him all at the same time that left him feeling...very tired.
Realizing that he couldn't afford to face the Raikage without feeling a hundred percent, he conceded to Kakashi and Kyuubi's 'advise'.
With that decision made, he placed his pillow at the edge of the sofa and leaned on it slowly.
"Goodnight, Minato-sensei."
Minato's eyes grew heavier as he yawned. "Goodnight…Kakashi...Naruto." Within seconds after he uttered does words, his eyes closed and he fell into slumber.
