Chapter 1

Percy POV

Under his feet, the earth rippled as if Half-Blood Hill had become a giant water mattress. Demigods fell. Ogres slipped. Centaurs charged face-first into the grass. AWAKE, a voice boomed all around them. A hundred yards away, at the crest of the next hill, the grass and soil swirled upward like the point of a massive drill. The column of earth thickened into the twenty-foot-tall figure of a woman – her dress woven from blades of grass, her skin as white as quartz, her hair brown and tangled like tree roots.

'Little fools.' Gaia the Earth Mother opened her pure green eyes. 'The paltry magic of your statue cannot contain me.' As she said it, Jason realized why Gaia hadn't appeared until now. The Athena Parthenos had been protecting the demigods, holding back the wrath of the earth, but even Athena's might could only last so long against a primordial goddess.

Fear as palpable as a cold front washed over the demigod army. 'Stand fast!' Piper shouted, her charmspeak clear and loud. 'Greeks and Romans, we can fight her together!' Gaia laughed. She spread her arms and the earth bent towards her – trees tilting, bedrock groaning, soil rippling in waves. Jason rose on the wind, but all around him monsters and demigods alike started to sink into the ground. One of Octavian's onagers capsized and disappeared into the side of the hill.

'The whole earth is my body,' Gaia boomed. 'How would you fight the goddess of –' FOOOOMP! In a flash of bronze, Gaia was swept off the hillside, snarled in the claws of a fifty-ton metal dragon. Festus, reborn, rose into the sky on gleaming wings, spewing fire from his maw triumphantly. As he ascended, the rider on his back got smaller and more difficult to discern, but Leo's grin was unmistakable. 'Pipes! Jason!' he shouted down. 'You coming? The fight is up here!'

'Wait a minute... where's Jason?' Piper asked. Hazel, having the same feeling of togetherness with the crew, possibly on the last day of the world told them that he had gone with some of the Greek Campers behind some Earthborn.

To storm or fire the world must fall

The words of the prophecy kept playing in Piper's head, and she could not shake off the feeling that if the 'storm' wasn't there, then Gaia couldn't be defeated. As much as she wanted to go in search of Jason, she understood that defeating Gaia was the priority.

Addressing Percy, she said, 'We don't know where he is, so you'll have to come on Festus with us'

Percy, being Percy, hugged Annabeth before running to Festus behind Piper, hoping to show Queen Dirt Face what happens when someone messes with his friends.

Leo POV

Standing on a fire breathing dragon, with his dragon holding one of the most powerful Primordials, wanting to destroy the world as Leo knew it. It definitely couldn't get any better from him. He could hear Gaia trying to break away from Festus, waiting for his two best friends, Piper and Jason to come.

He saw Piper and... Percy running towards him, talking along the way. Then suddenly Percy stopped running, while Piper continued and jumped on Festus. Leo was confused, but that trademark grin, never left his face.

'Pipes, where's...' Leo began, but Piper interrupted, 'LEO! Stop talking!'

As they rose higher in the air, they began to lose sight of Percy, not knowing where he was. Piper was using charmspeak, trying to get Gaia to stop whirling around and trying to damage Festus. Festus was breathing fire, distracting Gaia, but they knew that they couldn't do much without either Percy or Jason, who were the most powerful out of the Seven.

Then, Gaia boomed, 'You have no one else, my forces outnumber yours. Let me go right now and I will make your deaths a little less painful.' As much as Leo wanted to crack a joke to bring up their hopes, he knew what Gaia was saying was true. He opened his mouth, to tell Gaia to shut up, but Piper beat him to it, shouting 'SHUT UP!', effectively making both Gaia and Leo shut up.

Just then, Gaia began to swirl into a tornado of grass and soil, and Festus could no longer hold her, and she began to fall, until...

Percy POV

Percy began to rise in the air, taking support from the water vapour in the air, something that his father, Poseidon, told him when they were battling Otis and Ephialtes, explaining that he didn't tell him about this certain power sooner as Zeus had threatened to blast him out of the sky, if he ever flew again, and that was when he was just 12 years ago. But Percy thought Zeus wouldn't do anything because, although he was an airhead, he still wouldn't dare interfere wrongly in a quest that decided the fate of the world.

He was afraid that he might have been too late, but he saw Leo, Piper and Happy the Dragon, fighting Gaia, or Dirt Face, as he liked to call her, he willed the water to rise into the air, becoming a whirlpool, in order to make sure Gaia doesn't touch the ground. As Percy rose in the air, he saw Leo, his whole body covered in flames, whooping and jumping up and down, at the sight of him.

'Good to see that Leo'll remain the same' thought Percy, but then his attention immediately shifted to Gaia, who let go of the attempt to escape, after she realized that Percy's hurricane was containing her essence.

He knew that using Riptide wasn't ideal, as he was already expending so much power to contain Gaia. But he knew that he had to finish Gaia off as soon as possible, as he didn't have any power over air like Jason, and the amount of water vapour in the air was reducing. And if they went higher, Percy might black out and fall, which would leave Gaia free to come back to the ground, ruining their best chance.

Piper POV

She began to lose hope against Gaia, but when Percy came, she realized that their chances of beating Gaia had become so much higher and now if she would keep her head on the job, Leo and Percy could finish her off, but she had trouble focusing because of one question that kept nagging her, 'Where was Jason?', She knew that Percy was capable, maybe even more than Jason, to defeat Gaia. But she kept feeling that if their quest began with Leo, Jason and Her, wouldn't it be more logical for it to also end with the three of them?

She came to her senses and realized that thinking about her boyfriend's location was diverting her focus and that if she failed here, there would no Jason to go back to. She used her charmspeak, which was as powerful as ever, to calm Gaia down. She tried to concentrate on her relationship with Ouranos, and her children, the titans, being overthrown by her grandchildren, the gods.

Gaia again tried to break down into grass and soil, but her essence churned more sluggishly and it was easier for Percy's hurricane to control her, but even though she was using only charmspeak, her power was being sapped continuously, and she felt like staying awake was harder than getting Gaia to fall asleep.

She looked up and saw Leo, and she felt two main emotions, suprised and scared. Leo was still grinning, but it wasn't his usual impish grin, it was more like a sadistic grin, as if he was thinking about Gaia and all the ways he could kill her, probably because she was the reason his mother was dead, which was a good enough reason but it really wasn't like Leo.

Leo also spurred Festus to tighten his grip on Gaia, and Piper thought his reasons were from not letting her go to causing her as much pain as possible. Then she looked down and saw Percy

She saw the beads of sweat form on Percy's forehead, and she understood that controlling the water in the air and using it to keep Gaia close enough and keep himself airborne would be so much more tiring than he let on. Add it to the fact that Percy's father was Poseidon, along with the stories Annabeth and Thalia had told her about their experiences with the Zeus and the other Olympians, she wouldn't exactly put it past Zeus, or Jupiter to blast Percy out of the sky.

That brought back her question about Jason's location back into her mind. If, no when, she would see Jason, she would slap him so hard for not coming that he would never forget it in his entire life.

Just then, she heard Gaia, somehow damage Festus' midsection, and that drove everything away from her mind. She kept trying to make her sleep which led Gaia's eyes to droop, but not shut completely. However, this was also taking it's effect on Percy, as even Percy hurricane started spinning slowly. But. Piper didn't see that, instead she used even more charmspeak, making Percy drowsier than ever.

Then she saw an unnatural amount of blue light coming from Percy. He always had that aura of power around him, but this definitely didn't look normal to Piper. And she heard a bloodcurling scream coming from him. She wanted to know what happened afterwards, but she couldn't because of the minor problem of blacking out. One good thing that she saw was that Leo blacked out before her, giving her bragging rights over him.

Percy POV

Percy kept stabbing Gaia along with manipulating the water in the air to turn them into bullets that kept shooting at Gaia. But, he was starting to lose consciousness, and he wasn't sure if that was because of using his powers too much or because of Piper's charmspeak.

He couldn't exactly tell Piper to stop as that would allow Gaia to shake off the effects of the charmspeak, ruining all of their efforts. He realized that to defeat Gaia once and for all, he would have to use all of his powers that he could use. Mentally he began to go through what all powers he could use, and at the top of the list, came a memory of Mount Saint Helens, when he had called to the sea from within himself to defeat the Telkhines.

But at that point, he remembered that one scary moment when he had lost control and that power had almost gotten away from him. And Piper and Leo were still close to him and even Festus wouldn't be enough to protect them.

Just then, he looked down. He saw Frank shoot a Laistrygonian Giant between the eyes, and the giant crumbled. He looked up, and then Percy realized that although Frank claimed to be big and clumsy, he was always in the correct place at the correct time. He knew he could trust Frank enough to catch Piper and Leo, which left the pathway clear

Not once did Percy think about the damage that it would do to his body, as he understood that this was the only way Gaia could be destroyed, and that this burst of power would be enough to destroy Gaia's consciousness, exactly what had happened to Ouranos all those millenia ago.

He called to the sea from within him, and he felt a tugging in his gut, much more than usual. He felt happy to realize that at least he could control when to let it go, but before he did, he though about one person, Annabeth , and their first kiss, before he convinced her to go back to Hephaestus all those years ago. And then he let it loose in one horrible scream. He definitely wouldn't want to hear Piper and Leo shouting at him for blasting their years.

Piper POV

When she woke up, she was lying on the beach on Long Island with Leo right beside her. She tried to get up, but muttered, 'Brain overload', and fell down again. She felt the familiar sensation of nectar going through her throat and her vision cleared quite a bit and her head didn't feel as heavy as before. However, her years were still ringing and she promised herself never to forgive Percy for doing that.

As her vision came into focus, she saw Annabeth and Nico, with tears silently dropping from their eyes, Hazel and Frank, who were holding goblets of nectar for Piper and Leo, and the some of the campers from both Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter.

She asked everyone but Annabeth in particular, since she was the smartest,'Has Gaia fallen asleep?' Annabeth wiped her tears and said,'The Council of Cloven Elders and the...'

Just then, Leo woke up, and in total Leo fashion, exclaimed,'I'm so gonna kill Percy Jackson for ruining my ears'

'Shut up Leo'

'No let me..'

'Keep quiet for some time. Annabeth why are you crying? Where's Jason? Where's Percy?'

Annabeth tried to speak up but couldn't as she began crying but Nico answered her question

'I'm sorry Piper we don't know where Jason or Percy are but Percy..'

Piper was thinking as to what Nico was thinking but after a few moments her eyes widened

'No Annabeth it couldn't be. Percy may not be that smart, but even he wouldn't leave you like that. And Percy would never have used it completely because he knew Leo and I were there. He wouldn't sacrifice us would he?'

Hazel was about to speak in favour of Piper when Nico interrupted

'Piper I appreciate it, but even you know that Percy wouldn't think twice about sacrificing himself if it meant saving the entire world'

Frank spoke for the first time since Piper and Leo came back down

'We don't know for sure whether Percy's alive or dead because you can't put it past him to survive, after all the things that he already has survived. And Annabeth didn't you say that one of your friends can confirm whether Gaia has been put back to sleep or not? So where is he?'

Piper would have answered for Annabeth seeing as she was still grieving for Percy, but she didn't have any idea what or who Frank was talking about, so she stayed quiet and waited for an answer, which Nico gave.

'Yeah Frank, Annabeth was talking about Grover. He's a satyr, or faun for you, who one of the council of the clover elders. After the explosion that everyone saw, the satyrs and the nature spirits went for an emergency meeting to detect Gaia's presence and check if she's been put back to sleep. Oh wait, there's Grover, we can ask him himself.'

Frank went and asked Grover if Gaia was put back to sleep. If everyone wasn't so sad about Percy and Jason's disappearance, they would probably laugh at Grover's expression, since Frank towered him by several inches

Grover's tone was controlled in a way as though he was happy but there was some sadness which outweighed it. It probably was true because in all Percy had told us about himself, he never forgot to mention that Grover was his first friend.

'Gaia's presence cannot be sensed. The nature spirits are trying to contact the gods but nothing is working as of now. It's probably still the aftereffects of Gaia's power'

'But we definitely defeated her right?' Asked Leo, not wanted to go up against Dirt Face again.

'Yes we did. It's just that Gaia is a very powerful goddess and she takes quite some time to gain consciousness as well as go back to sleep. But anyway it's natural that we would have a victory feast at Camp, just like how we did after we defeated Kronos, but I don't feel like it, not after Percy...' He choked not being able to go on.

Annabeth spoke in a hoarse voice, which startled everyone,'We will have dinner with the Romans at our Camp it's just that there won't be any celebrations, and I think both the Greeks and the Romans would stand by it. Percy and Jason were integral parts of both camps, and we should also put our best efforts to find their bodies, so we could give them the burial rites that both of them deserved.'

Leo put his hand around Piper, who had started sobbing at that possibility that Jason might be dead, and said,'Those two are the most powerful heroes that Olympus has seen. We shouldn't put it past them to stay alive', with not even a hint of humour in his voice

'Shouldn't we also call Thalia and the Hunters, and the Amazons, they would also want to attend?', asked Hazel

Nico POV

'Shouldn't we also call Thalia and the Hunters, and the Amazons, they would also want to attend?', asked Hazel

Nico completely agreed with Hazel, and he knew that Thalia's response to Jason's disappearance, and possible death, would be the same as, if not worse than Annabeth's. It might be even worse for her since they had recently just found each other again.

Nico felt that with Percy and Jason not here, and Annabeth in no state to help, he decided it would be the best for him to tell everyone.

'Romans, we are honoured to have you present in our camp. As you know, we may have lost the strongest heroes either camp has seen in a very long time, so therefore we will be having their shrouds burned, along with all the other demigods who laid down their lives in order for us to see the sun rise on a Gaia-free land. Please make yourselves at home, we will have tents set up for all five cohorts, so please do not over work yourselves'

This proclamation was met by outbursts from the Romans, who were understandably very distraught as two of their most recent former praetors had died today. And Frank, being their current praetor, decided to voice the opinion of all his legionnaires.

'Thank you Nico, but it is not fair for the Greeks to be doing all the work, especially since we were the ones who brought the battle to your Camp. So how about we do this- Since we Romans are in larger numbers, we can help with the rebuilding of the camp and the pitching of our tents and the Greeks can oversee the recovery of the bodies of all the fallen demigods'

Nico, seeing no problem with this, agreed. He expected it to be much worse, since the Greeks didn't like Pluto much, and the Romans disliked Pluto even more, but the grief of losing many of their fellow comrades might have suppressed their dislike. He knew it would be a long day at Camp Half-Blood, he just didn't know whether all the demigods were capable of handling it.
