Chapter 5 (An Unexpected Turn)
Rain poured onto the streets covering every inch of uncovered pavement. Ram and Subaru stood close to each other protected by a single umbrella.
"Now let's go see your sister," Subaru said, in a calm and collective voice. He noticed Ram's face tense up. Ram was scared to see Rem after their argument. Subaru noticed this and felt sorry for Ram. He hated seeing Ram and Rem get into a fight. Hit hurt him more knowing he could have prevented it. If only he didn't walk off.
"Don't worry Ram, I already talked to Rem and she already agreed to talk to you," Subaru said. Ram's smile returned to her face.
"Thank you very much Barusu, but I am confused. Why are you helping me, after everything I said to you and Rem. Why aren't you angry?" Ram asked Subaru in a serious and confused tone. Her face held a neutral expression as she awaited Subarus answer.
"It's because I care about you. I never took anything you said personally. I know on the inside you trusted me more than ever. You were just acting out of love and care for your sister, and I have no choice but to respect that. Now let's get going, Rem is waiting for us," Subaru said looking back at Ram.
Ram felt touched by Subarus words. She nodded in agreement, and the two made their way back to Subarus' apartment. They stood close to each other to be underneath the umbrella. It was the closest Subaru and Ram have ever got without fighting with each other.
When they arrived at the apartment, Subaru knew Ram was nervous and scared. He could feel Ram's remorse and regret about the things she said in the heat of the argument.
"Relax Ram, take some deep breaths. I am sure if you just apologize to Rem, she will forgive you. I know I would," Subaru said as he looked over to Ram. He noticed tears steaming Ram's face, as her body shook uncontrollably. Ram didn't have any words to say. The things Rem said to her ecod in her head continuously.
Subaru went over to Ram and put his hand on her shoulders. Subaru looked into her crystal pink eyes ``Ram… I care about you and Rem more than anything. It pains me to see you two fight, but to every problem there's always a resolution" Subaru said in a voice full of sympathy and compassion.
"R…. Rem said she never wanted to see me again!" Ram cried out in sorrow, as more tears flowed out her eyelids. No matter how many tears she tried to wipe off her face. She could still feel more stream down her face like a continuous river. Her eyes grew cloudy as more tears continued to form like a rain cloud.
Subaru took one of his hands and wiped some tears from her face. "Rem didn't mean that. She was just really upset. Just know she wants to talk it out with you. I know it might seem scary to go up and talk to her, but please Ram be brave," Subaru said calmly.
Ram sniffled, and nodded her head. Subaru turned and opened the apartment door slowly. Subaru entered first and Ram reluctantly followed behind him. Subaru looked over to the couch to see Rem still sitting on the couch in the same exact position he last saw her. Ram hid herself behind Subaru upon seeing Rem. Despite Subarus encouraging words, Ram was still scared of her sister.
When Rem looked over to see Subaru at the door, Rem immediately noticed Ram hiding behind him. Her pink hair sticking out from behind him as she peaked over to look at Rem.
Rem's blank expression did not change. Ever since Subaru left to go find Ram. Rem had some time to think about what she said to her sister. She felt horrible thinking about how upset she made Ram. Rem knew she loved her sister, and it broke her heart to see Ram afraid to even look at her.
"Follow me Ram," Subaru said as walked over to the living room. He sat down next to Rem, and Ram sat on the opposite couch. Ram grabbed a small pillow and hugged it over her body, in an attempt to hide herself.
Both Rem and Ram couldn't bring themselves to look at each other. They were both depressed from the fight. They were also pretty embarrassed having Subaru solve their sibling problems.
"Ram, I know there's something you wanted to say to Rem. If you may start us off," Subaru said calmly while looking over at her. Ram sighed lightly as she prepared her apology.
"Rem… I...I am … sorry for being selfish, and not accepting you and Barusu's relationship'' Ram said in an apologetic tone, her face remaining expressionless. She looked down to the floor in shame. Rem's face softened a bit after hearing Ram apologize. Truth was Ram did not apologize for many things. Even when she did it was never really heartfelt, but this was one of the rare instances where her words carried weight and emotion.
"Rem forgives you Nee-Sama. Rem is also extremely sorry for kicking you out, and yelling at you" Rem said in the same sympathetic tone. Ram stood up and approached Rem with a soft smile on her face.
"I love you Rem," Ram said while opening her arms. Rem smiled, and got up to hug Ram tightly
"I love you Nee-Sama," Rem said in a happy tone.
"That was way easier than expected," Subaru thought to himself as he watched Rem and Ram make up. Subrau smiled at the wholesome sight. He has never seen a pair of siblings get along like Rem and Ram. Honestly Subaru was expecting them to continue fighting
"Alright now that that's over with, what do you all say to watching a bunch of random movies for the rest of the day. Since it's kinda raining outside" Subaru said as he stood up and opened the curtains to look out the window. He saw the rain completely engulf the city, as it splattered against the window heavily.
"Rem likes that idea, Subaru" Rem said as she wiped the remaining tears of her face. A confused look spread across Rams face. She was confused about what a movie was.
"What's a movie?" Ram asked curiously. Subaru turned to look at Ram
"You know that show you were watching on the TV in the restaurant?" Subaru asked. Ram shook her head as she remembered watching the strange broadcast
"Well it's like that except it tells a story, like the ones found in books" Subaru said as he and Rem went to the movie shelf
"I think it will be a good idea if Nee-Sama should pick the movies," Rem said as she walked away and sat back down.
"Sure, Ram please come up here and pick a couple that you like," Subaru said, still standing by the shelf. Ram walked over and started picking out movies she liked. She could only judge them by their cover, but still she was able to gather a decent pile to watchover with Rem and Subaru. As she pulled them out she would show the cover to Subaru trying to gain a better insight to what the film was about analyzing the picture on the front in great detail.
Ram handed her small pile to Subaru, and Subaru put a random movie she chose off the stack and into the blueray player. Subaru sat down next to Rem, and Rem sat next to Ram. The rest of the evening was spent enjoying some modern world filmography
Ram chose a lot of scary movies. During some she and Rem held each other shaking in fear. As they looked wide eyed to the film on screen. They would all scream whenever a jumpscare occurred. Even Subaru got scared a little
When the last movie ended. Subaru looked over and saw Rem leaning on him. He heard Rems light breathing as she slept on Subarus shoulder
Subaru noticed Ram was also asleep, she was leaning on Rem using her shoulder and a pillow. Subaru heard the apartment door creek open. Subaru looked over and saw his parents
Subaru shot them a smile, and put a finger over his lips telling them to be quiet. They nodded and slowly entered the apartment. They walked over to the living room, and saw Rem and Ram asleep leaning on each other
Kenichi smiled, "What happened while we were out?" he whispered. Subaru looked at his father
"Rem and Ram got into a little sister fight, but I was able to sort it out luckily" Subaru said smiling proudly as he saw the sleeping twins rest peacefully
"You always had a unique way of words. Has Ram opened up to you yet?" Kenichi asked curiously
"Ram always liked and trusted me. Her insults were just her strange way of showing affection. I was never really bothered by them. In fact I find her attitude kind of funny sometimes" Subaru said. Kenichi nodded
"Well I think you should take Rem into your room, you can leave Ram to sleep on the couch" Naoko said. Subaru nodded and picked up Rem carefully and made his way to his room
Naoko and Kenichi laughed silently seeing Subaru carry Rem to his room
"Good night Subaru" Naoko said while throwing a couple blankets over Ram
"Good night Mom, Good night Dad" Subaru said as he opened his door and walked in. He laid Rem down on the bed, and he collapsed onto his side. He noticed Rems eyes open slightly
Rem turned to face Subaru. She had a appreciative smile on her face "Subaru thank you for finding Nee-Sama, and bring her back" Rem said gratefully
"It's no problem Rem, I am just happy you were able to resolve it so quickly. I was expecting a full on brawl or something" Subaru said smiling laughing a bit at the scenario that he pictured
The night was peaceful. Subaru, Rem, and Ram truly needed a good night's sleep after that chaotic and eventful day
The next morning Ram awoke early in the morning. She heard Subarus parents chatting at the table. Ram noticed the blankets she was wrapped in. All Ram remembered from last night was drifting off next to Rem
Ram felt refreshed after her sleep. She hasn't had a good sleep in the past two weeks. With the stresses of finding Rem lifted off of her, she was finally able to relax somewhat
Ram sat up and turned her head to look at Subarus parents. Subarus parents noticed that Ram was awake and smiled
"Good morning Ram," Naoko said, smiling warmly. Ram felt bad for not being able to properly introduce herself to Subaru's parents. Ram knew that they were lovely people but she didn't show them a single but a gratitude for taking care of her. Ram decided this was going to be a new start
"Good morning Miss Naoko" Ram said returning the smile
Naoko and Kenichi looked at each other. They have never seen Ram smile before
"Miss Naoko and Sir Kenichi. I want to apologize for my tone and attitude yesterday. I was just in shock of everything that was happening around me" Ram said bowing her head apologetically
"There's no need to apologize Ram, We understand completely" Kenichi said smiling
"Thank you" Ram said returning the smile
"Also sorry for chaining you up to my useless son" Kenichi said
"If I were to be honest with you Sir Kenichi, I actually enjoyed it more then I hated it, and you also think Barusus useless" Ram said her eyes lighting up
"Oh yah for sure, that boy just has a fancy way with words let's just put it like that" Kenichi said laughing a bit
Ram walked over to the table and began to converse with Subarus parents about how useless Subaru was. Subaru walked out of his room while they were conversating
"I can't even count how many times Barusu slipped and fell flat on his face while cleaning the baths," Ram said. Subaru heard what Ram said and froze dead in his tracks
"I wish I could've seen that" Kenichi said laughing
"What else did he do" Naoko asked eager to hear the next story
"How long have you guys been talking about me" Subaru spoke up with his arms crossed
Everyone turned to look at Subaru "Barusu you shouldn't be evas dropping you know" Ram said coldly
"How could I resist when your talking all about my mistakes so openly to my own parents" Subaru said while walking over to the table
"Barusu I am just sharing a common interest with your family" Ram said smirking a little
"Yah Subaru I would knock off being a servant as a potential career choice. You clearly don't have the skills required" Kenichi said while looking at Subaru
"You 're lucky to have someone as patient as Ram to tolerate and teach you. I know for sure many would of just given up after the first week" Naoko chimed in
"Why is this happening to me?" Subaru asked, confused. Subarus parents laughed in response
"Oh Subaru you're too easy that's why. Anyway as much as me and your mother would love to sit and chat. We have some business to attend to. We should be back around dinner time" Kenichi said as he and Naoko stood up and started to walk towards the door. They left, and that left Ram and Subaru alone
"Barusu… I am ready for you to finally take me around the city properly this time" Ram said. Ram was now in a good enough mood to want to learn about Subarus world
"Alright Ram, I think we can go quickly while Rem is still sleeping we won't be long. Hold on let me leave her a note just in case she wakes up while we are out" Subaru said as he grabbed a piece of paper and wrote a note informing Rem were they would be
He placed the note on the table, and left with Ram out onto the city. Rem awoke a couple minutes later. She noticed Subaru was missing. Usually Rem would be the first one up. She walked out of their room trying to look for Subaru. She notice that no one else seemed to be home
Rem noticed the note on the table. She noticed her name spelled out in bold letters. She read the note.
Dear Rem
Me and Ram will be out for a couple hours. Ram wanted me to take her around the city. She is finally in a good enough mood to learn. Anyway I will see you soon, don't go anywhere until I return
Love Subaru
Rem placed the note down and smiled. "Good to see them getting along," Rem thought happily. Rem stretched and wondered what she would do while they were out. Rem liked the feeling of having the apartment to herself
Rem got cleaned up, and changed into a new set of clothes. She wandered over to the movie shelf. She noticed two sections of the shelf had different cases then the rest. They all looked similar to each other. Having a white spines and the word PS4 on the top. Rem pulled one out and read the cover
"R-Red Dead Rede-Redemption Two" Rem pronounced out the title of the game she was holding. Rem saw the cover she liked the cover art and the title font
"This should be a good movie" Rem thought to herself as she approached the TV. She turned the TV on using the remote, Rem remembered she had to put the disk in a system of some sort
Rem crouched down and noticed that there were more than one system. There were two. Rem didn't know which one to choose so she chose a random one. She put the disk close to the system and it slid in. Rem heard a power on noise and got excited. She noticed the system had a glowing blue stripe
She saw the TV light up. Rem got confused. When she saw the TV show a remote control of some sort. Rem looked over to the coffee table and saw the remote that was identical to the one shown on the TV. Rem walked over and grabbed it off the coffee table
The remote looked odd; it had two circular sticks and a bunch of other buttons. It had four shapes on one side of the remote. Rem started to press random buttons until one eventually got her off the black screen. Rem noticed the remote had blue glowing out the end. Rem loved the sight of it
Rem was welcomed by another screen. She mashed random buttons again until it finally brought her to the Home Screen. Since she started the system by entering in a disk the system started the disc up instantly
Rem saw a cool art show up in front of her eyes. The screen then went black. Rem heard a loud shotgun blast. She jumped at the loud noise
She was shown a black screen with the game's title. Rem saw the letter X next to the word story. Rem looked at the controller and saw the X button, she pressed it and the game loaded up
A series of photos showed they were not in colour, they looked vintage. A odd guitar track played along with it
Rem started to get confused at what she was looking at "where's the movie" Rem thought to herself eventually the game began.
Rem watched the opening cutscene amazed. But also confused, these people were primitive just like her world. The only difference was they had no magic. The game was in a different language so she had to read the subtitles. She was following along until she was giving control of the character
Rem saw the character in front of her freeze in place and not moved. The game still played Rem heard one of the characters talk
"What's the hold up Arthur?" This confused Rem she didn't understand what was happening, why was the main character sitting there on this animal not moving
Rem read the words at the bottom of the screen. That weren't the subtitles
"Move the left stick to move forward" Rem looked at the remote she was holding and moved one of the circular sticks
Rem watched in amazement as the character moved forward. She was finally playing a game. Rem turned the stick slightly and the character turned. Rem was amazed that she was controlling the movie
It took Rem awhile to get used to controlling the character. After about 15 minutes Rem finally made it to where she was overlooking a small house on a mountain
Rem tried to control her character to go down the mountain but accidentally made him fall down, killing him. Rem jumped when she saw her character fall
Rem was met with a game over screen and frowned. She saw that she could restart from the checkpoint. She restarted but this time she was more careful. Rem made it down to the home. "Why don't these people use cars?" Rem thought to herself. Every movie Rem watched with Subaru typically took place in the modern world. Rem has never seen a western
The game instructed Rem to hitch up the animal her character was riding. She walked the horse over to the hitching place. She held the triangle button that was shown on screen, and her character got off his horse. Rem was fascinated by the animal she was looking at, it was different then a dragon by every means, but it used in a similar way
Everything went fine until the first shoot out. Rem had trouble controlling the weapon with the joysticks and couldn't aim properly. Rem mission failed a bunch of times. But she continued determined to beat the game
Meanwhile Ram and Subaru were exploring the city. Subaru took Ram to the same cafe he and Rem went to. Ram enjoyed the cafe just like Rem. Subaru knew he needed to put Rams worries at rest and answer everyone of her concerns of him and Rems relationship
"So Ram, I know you had some concerns about me and Rems relationship. Do you wanna talk about it?" Subaru asked. Ram made eye contact with Subaru and a serious look spread across her face
"Sure, first off Is Rem going to be your first and only wife?" Ram asked immediately in a serious tone
"Yes of course. I am not into having multiple wives thats weird" Subaru said. Ram smiled a bit. Subaru took this as a sign he answered the question correctly
"I didn't know you were able to throw out Miss Emilia so easily. Three months with her, is no comparison to two days with Rem" Ram said smirking slightly
"You see Ram, me and Emilia were never that close. We will still be great friends I am sure of it, but I spent more time working alongside Rem then I did Emilia. I just hope when she finds out it goes well" Subaru said
"I see, anyway, how long do you think this relationship will last? Will you ever leave Rem for someone better?" Ram asked
"I would love for it to be lifelong honestly you have me word on that. Also no I ain't going to replace Rem with someone else. Me and Rem went through so much. So it's impossible to replace her and the bond we had" Subaru answered Rams question as if it were the most obvious question in the world
"Well you already know that you will be decapitated if you leave Rem so I would not get any bright ideas if I were you," Ram said.
Ram proceeded to lose herself in thought. She wished to find someone as caring as Subaru one day, but she couldn't do it on her own. Her last love confession was a disaster. A memory Ram never wants to relive.
Subaru noticed Ram's face. He knew Ram was thinking about something intently. "Ram, you look like you have something on your mind," Subaru said bluntly. Ram looked up at Subaru.
"It's just that well… How should I put it… It's just that I hope that one day I could have that sort of relationship, and be as happy as Rem is, '' Ram said, covering her face with her palm a little embarrassed.
Subaru remembered the story Rem told about Rams confession disaster. Subaru felt bad for her, and wanted to help her start again with that person.
"Ram, you don't need to worry. When Beatrice makes contact again. We will all go back to Rosswals mansion. I think I will even bring my family. My dad seems pretty interested in going. Anyway when we all go back, I promise to become your dating instructor" Subaru said smiling. Ram gave him a confused look.
"Dating Instructor?" Ram asked with curiosity and scepticism.
"Yes, your dating instructor, basically I am going to help you find that special person by any means necessary," Subaru said, enthusiastically.
Ram was a bit iffy on letting Subaru help her with something so personal to her., but she accepted having no one else to turn to.
"You better not mess this up" Ram said in a serious tone.
"I won't, I promise," Subaru said, giving her a reassuring smile. Subaru and Ram spent the morning at the cafe and made their way home. When they were next to the apartment door they heard loud gunshots, and dogs barking coming from inside the apartment
Subaru opened the door, and saw Rem at the edge of the couch playing video games. Something Subaru has yet to introduce her too.
"Rem, turn it down," Subaru said as he walked over and grabbed the remote and turned the TV volume down. Subaru noticed Rem's concentrated expression.
"Oh hi Subaru" Rem said, not turning to look at him. Ram walked in front of Rem happily.
"Rem Rem I went to the cafe with Barusu. It was really nice there" Ram said. She noticed Rem leaning over to look behind her.
"That great Nee-Sama, but can you move out of the way? Rem is trying to finish the movie" Rem asked Ram calmly.
Subaru looked at what game Rem was playing.
"Wait, you're playing that American outlaw game. Odd choice, very odd choice" Subaru said as he sat down next to Rem. Rem's eyes were fixed to the screen. Rem had been stuck on the second mission for two hours and she was determined to beat it.
"How did you discover this anyway? I don't think I showed you video games before" Subaru asked. Rem didn't answer because she was too invested in the game she was playing. Rem eventually finished the mission.
"I did it!" Rem shouted when she completed the mission she shot her arms out in the air.
"Subaru Rem finished the movie!" Rem shouted happily to Subaru.
"Rem this isn't a movie, it's a game, a video game. In a game you control your character, In a movie you do not" Subaru said informatively.
"Well, Rem finished the game!" Rem shouted again happily. Subaru just laughed in response.
"Rem if I remember correctly you only just got done the second mission. You are still in the first chapter" Subaru said, smiling. Rem's face dropped a bit.
"What? How many chapters are there?" Rem asked.
"I don't know, I never finished it. I got like past chapter one and called it a day. The game seems really boring to me, not really my type" Subaru said. Rem turned to look at Subaru.
"This game is not boring, it's fun, Rem loves the setting. It reminds me of Lugnica but without magic" Rem said in a serious voice.
"Well I am glad you enjoy it Rem. I gotta say you are really taking interest in western media" Subaru said as he watched Rem play.
"Western media?" Rem asked confused at the term Subaru used.
"Yah, this game isn't from Japan. It was made for an English audience" Subaru informed Rem. "I think I know where to take for our first overseas trip" Subaru thought in his head.
Meanwhile at the Rosswal Mansion
Emilia opened her door and walked down to the dining room. She was starving, all the work that came with the election really brought a toll on her. Emilia entered the dining room, and noticed she didn't smell food being made. This was odd, usually Ram was on top of it every morning. Ever since Rem disappeared with Subaru, Ram took over as head chef
Emilia walked into the kitchen and didn't see anyone in there. "Where's Ram at?" Emilia thought to herself. Emilia remembered whenever she would see her. Ram looked so exhausted beyond belief. Having to be a maid, and look for her sister. Not to mention all the stress that came with Rem's disappearance
"She's probably off sleeping, she is pretty exhausted" Emilia concluded. An idea popped into Emilia's head "What if I prepare breakfast" Emilia wanted to give Ram a break, so she decided she was going to take care of breakfast today. A smile crept across Emilia's face as she went and grabbed a pot and put on the stove
"Now what should I make?" Emilia thought as she paced back and forth. As she was thinking Puck came out and greeted her
"Hey Lia, what are you thinking about?" Puck asked curiously. Emilia stopped and looked at Puck
"I am thinking about what to make for breakfast, I wanna give Ram a break" Emilia said with a smile on her face. Puck smiled back
"That's so nice of you, I am sure Ram will be grateful"
"I know, but I am still confused on what to make" Emilia said as she started to grab random ingredients and threw them in the pot
"Goodluck on that, I am going to find Beatrice I know she wants to see me" Puck said before zipping off
"Bye puck" Emilia said as she continued her cooking endeavors. Eventually she finished the soup she was making. Rosswal walked in and saw Emilia cooking breakfast. He smiled in amusement
"Well I never thought I would see you here. What are you making" Rosswal said as he inspected the soup Emilia made. He noticed it looked a bit odd, but decided to not tell Emilia that
"Hmm great effort Emilia, you should get Ram or Rem to teach you" Rosswal said
"Well I can't really get Rem to teach me since she is practically in another world, and as for Ram I think she has too much to take care of. I wouldn't want to bother her" Emilia said as she started pouring bowls of her soup
"In fact I decided to give Ram a break, and I took care of breakfast. As you could see" Emilia said as she started to put the bowls soup on a cart and wheeled them to the dining room
"Oh my thats breakfast" Rosswal said a little shocked
"Yah its breakfast what did you think it was" Emilia responded
"Umm how about I handle breakfast going forward while Ram and Rem are out" Rosswal said walking into the dinning hall with Emilia
"Wait Ram is with Rem?" Emilia said confused
"I teleported her over to Rem so she could work there relationship out I suppose" Beatrice said as she entered the dining hall and sat down, petting pucks fur
"How long do you think they will be out?" Rosswal asked curiously
"I will check in with them today, and see how things are going. If all goes well Ram should be back tomorrow" Beatrice said
"What about Rem and Subaru?" Emilia asked
Beatrice knew Rem and Subaru were planning on staying in Japan long term. She didn't know if it was her place or responsibility to inform Rosswal
"They will be back, I suppose," Beatrice said. Beatrice knew Rem would be formal, she knew Rem would want to say goodbye to everyone in person before starting a new chapter in her life
"Well that's good, just checking. Anyway let's eat I prepared breakfast" Emilia said enthusiastically handing everyone a bowl before sitting down herself
Everyone was inspecting the soup placed in front of them. It didn't look good by any means. It also smelled funny. Everyone eventually took there sips
Beatrice spat out the soup when it hit her taste buds "That is one of the most repulsive things I ever tasted I suppose" Beatrice said. Rosswal took his sip, and it took everything in him to swallow
"Uhhh oh my Emilia, I don't think this is proper breakfast food" Rosswal said trying to be nice. Puck took a lick from Beatrice's spoon and covered his mouth
"Lia I would practice more," Puck said, also trying to be nice and encouraging. Emilia frowned
"Would you guys stop acting like that? It's not that bad" Emilia said before she took her sip. Upon tasting it she spit it out instantly, and vomited on the floor
"I told you I suppose" Beatrice said her expression not changing
