Meeting Oliver

Hello my fanfic brothers and sisters! Now as you have probably noticed, I've only written stories for my favourite movie Rio so far. But I would like to say a big thank you to monsterjamvadim for encouraging me to write a story on Oliver and Conpany. A great movie that needs more attention on this site as I think it's unfairly underrated. Anyways I hope you enjoy the story! Let's get to it shall we?

It was a gloomy, horrific day in the heart of New York City. The rain came pouring down, adding to the already awful scenery.

Among the many people that were walking along the streets, most of them would just run at very quick paces, to escape from the horrible weather change. Even the dogs that were walking alongside their owners were running very quick because they didn't want to get soaked.

But a certain white terrier with brown spots emerged from a dark alley, and he started strutting down the slippery sidewalk singing to himself. While also skidding on the pavement in a cool manner.

"Why should I worry! Why should I care, yeah!" He happily sang to himself while not really paying attention to what he was doing. Where it was really slippery, he kept losing his balance and kept trying to regain his posture.

Suddenly, he slipped on the floor and started hurling towards the wall of an abandoned building. He bumped his head on the wall, but a cardboard box softened the blow after the impact. "Ouch! That really hurt!"

"H-H-Hello? Is there somebody there?" A tiny voice was heard from inside the box, and it seemed like a nervous and fearful voice. The dog started sniffing the inside of the box and noticed a small orange cat just shivering in the corner. He smiled at the kitten and winked at the youngling.

"Woah…you scared me there kid! For a minute there I thought you were a voice in my head!" The terrier barked while sitting on the floor a few steps away from the box. What he noticed was the cat just stopped moving and prepared for the worst.

"Just make it quick ok? I've got nothing to live for anyway!" The cat whined, while crying in the corner of the box. Although, the terrier was confused about this comment.

"Wait, wait, wait! You think that just because I'm a dog I'm going to kill you?" The dog's ears shot up straight as he was rather surprised by this sudden request from the young cat.

"Well…you are a dog aren't you? You hate cats!"

"Listen kid…I've been around these streets for several years now! Never in my life have I killed a kitty cat! Besides…too much fur. I'd be coughing up fur balls for weeks!" The dog joked while nudging the box over so the cat would get out.

"So…you're not going to kill me?" The cat asked again as he slowly walked outside of the box, staring at the canine in fear.

"Of course not kid! By the way, the name's Dodger! But you can call me Dodge! What's your name kid?"

"Oliver! But I'd rather you just call me Oliver rather than a silly nickname!" Oliver replied as he shook Dodgers paw while smiling at him.

"Oliver eh? You know what kid? Why don't you come home with me?" Dodger offered while patting the young cat on the head.

"You…you would really do that? But you barely know me!"

"I get your situation kid! I too was on the street before Fagin and Rita found me!"

"Wait, there's more dogs? Isn't that going to be bad for me?" Oliver backed up in fear and started shivering. Dodger placed a paw on his back to calm him down.

"Relax buddy! Fagin is my owner, and he's always looking for new members for the gang! Then there is Rita, she's a dog."

"A friend of yours?" Oliver wondered while sitting opposite him. Dodger soon put on a dreamy smile as he looked at the floor.

"I guess you could say that kid…Rita is a good friend of mine! Second in command in our gang…most charming girl I know. The way she walks around…" He started to trail off, and he noticed the young cat smirking at him in a playful way. "What?"

"Sounds to me you…." Oliver paused for effect as he winked at the terrier in a cheeky way. This made Dodger blush deeply, but he shook it off and stood up tall.

"What? Like her? Oh no, no, no we are just friends! Honest!" Dodger panicked while forcing a fake smile. However, Oliver knew that he was covering up his feelings and keeping his cool. He decided to just go along with it.

"Yeah I believe you! So…where do you live?" Oliver asked while tilting his head to the side. The white terrier smiled at him and motioned with his head as a signal for the young cat to follow him.

"It's not too far kid! You'll have to stay close though…New York can be quite dangerous this time in the evening!"

"Oh ok! I'm right behind you Dodge!" Oliver beamed as he let Dodger take the lead, and he followed suit keeping up with him.

They ran down a few alleyways, over a couple of small fences. They even managed to avoid a couple of bulldogs who were trying to scare Oliver.

"Watch out for those ones Oliver! They may look harmless but they can be pretty ruthless!" Dodger warned as he jumped on top of a dumpster and pulling him up by the scruff of his fur.

"Wow, there are a lot of dangers here! How do you survive in such a dangerous city?" The cat wondered while Dodger placed him down in front of him.

"Like I told you kid! I've been on the street for years! Now…if remember correctly, Tito and Rita should be right around here somewhere!" Dodger remarked while darting his head around the alleyway. Luckily he spotted a small patch of red hair sticking out from a garbage can. "There he is…TITO! OVER HERE!"

The dog known as Tito lifted his head up while chewing on what looked like half a meatloaf meal. He was a small grey chihuahua, with red hair and dirt all over his face. Probably because he had his head in the garbage.

"Yo my main amigo Dodge! What's going on man? Where did you go…is that a CAT?!" Tito emphasised angrily while growling at the poor orange kitten. Dodger put his paw in front of Oliver to protect the young male from harm.

"Ah relax would you Tito! He's just a poor little kitten lost in the city! He had nowhere else to go! What was I supposed to do? Just leave him on the street?"

"Well…he's a cat! Dogs hate cats!"

"Not this cat buddy! He seems like a good kid! Plus if you touch him, you'll regret it! Do you remember what happened last year during Independence Day?"

"Alright! Fine! I'll leave him alone!" Tito sighed while walking up to the young cat and bowing in respect. "Apologies my friend! What's your name?"

"Hi, I'm Oliver! It's nice to meet you Tito!" Oliver smoked warmly at him as he shook his paw. Suddenly another paw came from behind Tito to shake the kids paw.

"My name is Rita! It's a pleasure to meet you too!" Dodger stood there in silence, because he was admiring the female saluki who appeared just behind Tito.

"It's great to meet you too Rita! I was afraid that you'd all attack me because I'm a cat!" Oliver breathed a sigh of relief as he let go of Rita's paw. The female canine smiled at him and then gazed upon Dodger who gave her a dreamy smile. She noticed this and decided to play around with him.

"You ok there Dodge? Got something in your eye?"

"N-No Rita! Sorry I was…daydreaming! Yeah, sorry let's go back to the barge shall we guys?" The terrier remarked in a suave manner while taking the lead. Oliver gave him a concerned glare as he followed him.

"You guys live on a barge?"

Tito walked alongside him and leaned closer to the cat to calm his nerves.

"Relax amigo! It's not as bad as it sounds. I mean…yeah it's a little dirty and run down! But, there is food, shelter and we have each other! That's all we need in this life!" He explained in calm manner, playfully nudging the cat to calm him down.

"So…are there more of you in the gang?"

Rita turned to face him and smiled in a comforting way. "Yes there's Fagin, our owner. Einstein, a grey great dane and he's normally a calm guy. Then there's Francis…he's a bulldog but he's very, shall we say full of elegance and I'd say quite feminine!"

"HEY! NO I'M NOT!" A voice echoed ahead of the group.

The gang looked ahead and saw a grey bulldog poking his head out from behind a barrel. He strolled out from behind it and approached the group of dogs and Oliver with an annoyed glare.

"I'm not a feminine dog! I'd say I'm quite manly!" As soon as he said this his friends started chuckling in response, whereas Oliver just remained silent. He noticed the orange cat and approached him rather slowly and steadily. "Hi there champ! The name's Francis!"

"Oliver! Where's the other one? Einstein was it?"

"Oh, he returned to the barge earlier in the day. He slipped over on the pavement and banged his head on a lamppost. What a clumsy goof!" They all laughed in response, but Dodgers laugh was more of a nervous chuckle.

"Oh yeah! What a clumsy dog!" He blurted out loud while giving Oliver a stern glare to keep him quiet about him crashing into a wall.

"Well, we better pick up the pace guys! Fagin will be worried about us if we stick around here too late!" Rita remarked as she picked up Oliver by the scruff of his fur.

They all started sprinting as fast as they could down the dark alleyway. The barge was only a few minutes away from them and Oliver would finally meet the owner known as Fagin. Will he allow him to join the gang, or will he return to the streets?
