Chapter 1: Beginning of Something Special
Lincoln Loud is now 15 years old and has learned a lot over the past few years. Like how much his family means to him no matter how much they may get on his nerves. Or how easily he can screw up a moment by over thinking it. He even learned how to deal with his feelings for girls properly and managed to maintain a relationship with Ronnie-Anne. But today his word felt as though it was collapsing around him.
Lincoln sat on his bed staring at the picture on his phone with tightness in his chest. It was of him and Ronnie Anne as they were holding each other at the skate park. They both had such wide, goofy smiles that day but now they were several states away from each other and Ronnie had texted him breaking their long-distance relationship. She didn't think it was working out and he agreed but that didn't make it any less painful. It hurt like hell, but Lincoln understood.
What he failed to realize though was that his older sister Luan was watching from the doorway, having gotten off work early tonight and wanting to check in on her brother. She could tell he was upset about something but wasn't close enough to see his phone. Admittedly being a little nosey she tried getting closer without alerting him so she could peek at the phone. Once she was closer she saw the picture of Ronnie and figured out that she had probably just broke up with him. It wasn't news that they had been having a rough time with the long distance. She decided it might be best to let Linc have some time to deal with his emotions, so she tried sneaking back out into the hall, but a small noise gave her away.
Luan turned to see her little brother staring up at her with pain in his eyes, but he quickly attempted to appear as though everything was all right. He always tried to seem strong for them so they wouldn't worry over him. She was not as good at hiding her emotions as he was, with the worry evident upon her face. She understood what it was like to not be able to be with the person you care for, although her case was a little different being that her crush didn't even know she liked them. So Luan sat on the bed next to Lincoln deciding that she should talk to him now that she blew her cover.
"Hey Linc, how's it going? Is everything ok?" Luan knew he was going to tell her he was fine but couldn't think of another way to start the conversation.
"Hi Luan, yea I'm fine. Nothing to worry about." He added a nervous chuckle hoping she bought his answer, but his hopes were dashed when she scooted closer and put her arm around his shoulder.
"Lincoln it's ok to tell me what happened. I promise I won't get our sisters involved; I just want to make sure you're ok. And I saw the way you were looking at that picture, so I have an idea of what's wrong. Maybe I can help cheer you up at least." Luan was always one of his kindest sisters, especially when she started to ease up on the April Fool's day pranks. He usually felt safe confiding in her so he figured he might as well try to get some of this off his chest while the opportunity was here.
"Ronnie broke up with me. She said the distance was just becoming too great an obstacle and that she felt us drifting apart emotionally. I understand her reasoning and I don't blame her, but it still sucks, you know?"
"Well Linc I can imagine it hurts to break up with someone you've known for so long, but I honestly haven't been through that yet. You know I've never really had a relationship before, just short flings now and then. But I let you in on a secret only Luna knows. I had a crush on the same person for almost as long as you've known Ronnie, but I still haven't worked up the courage to tell them. You have to look back at the good times you had with each other and cherish them, but you need to find a way to move on. You're still young, you have a lot of future love and heart ache ahead of you. Besides any girl would be lucky to be with you for even half as long as Ronnie had you." Luan had her famous bright, heart melting smile on the entire time she spoke to Lincoln. He always loved that about her, how she would always try to brighten everyone's day. Be it with a corny pun or a simple smile.
"Thanks Luan it's nice to hear that you think that, and I really appreciate the advice and trying to cheer me up. You're right I can't linger on being sad, I need to be glad for what we had and hope that she finds happiness. It's going to be rough for a few days, but I think I'll be ok." He legitimately felt better now, the pain was more of a dull ache in the back of his mind now.
"I'm glad I could help Lincy." Luan gave her brother a big hug, earning an embarrassed but happy groan from her brother.
"You know you need to give me a little more to go on than that though Luan. I mean you can't just tell me you have a crush and not give me something. Come on, who is this guy? Do I know him?"
Luan gave a shrug and a smile as she got up from the bed and made her way to the door. She turned around with a sly look in her eyes and her nerves a little on end.
"Who said it was a guy Lincy?" And with that she was gone, leaving Lincoln confused but happy for the challenge of figuring out who she meant. From what she said he could deduce that it was obviously another girl, but he honestly couldn't think of any possibilities. Luan had never giving him a sign that she liked other girls, hell all her past flings were with guys. But it was late and he was tired so he will have to figure this out tomorrow.
Down the hall back in her own room Luan was at her computer looking at her own clown business photos with one in particular being important to her. It was the day Lincoln almost ruined a party with a bunch of emo kids that he had know idea how to handle, and one girl stood out to Luan. It was the birthday girl herself, Maggie Fitzgerald. She was one year younger than Luan, being 17 while she was 18, but she was always very striking. At least to Luan. She guessed all her time around her rocker and goth sisters gave her a thing for the dark and mysterious look.
But now sitting in her room all alone she felt conflicted in her feelings for the younger girl. She still liked her but now it felt as though there was something else. She thought back to her conversation with her brother. She meant everything she said about him being a great catch for any girl, but did she really mean ANY girl? Luan felt so confused now, she's never thought like this before. Sure she was bi but to start to develop a crush on your brother was just weird. She went to bed feeling so confused about how she felt and finally fell asleep after tossing and turning for about an hour.
That night she dreamt of Maggie again, but now her own brother faced her from behind her long-time crush. In her sleep Luan smiled.
