Winter's Kiss Part Two

Revali woke to being shaken, the Bokoblin was the one waking him. He sat up only to see the dying fire, he pulled out some more bundles of wood from Link's pack. Honestly, he wasn't even sure how the other male had packed so many of them inside of it. He turned to see the bokoblin, whom was putting some more wood on the fire and prodding it to keep it alive. The Lynels were asleep or at least appeared to have fallen asleep, he watched as the bokoblin started to doze off.
"I can keep the fire going, you should rest," he said to the creature. The bokoblin moved over to the pillow and curled up under the fur and blankets. How much longer would the wind howl he wondered, poking the fire a bit. It was deep into the night but thanks to the fire he could at least see, what he saw he didn't like though. Outside was a wall of white, he looked through the pack finding only one more bundle of wood to add to the others. It wasn't nearly enough to last them, if the storm continued for days. A tapping on the glass alerted him to movement outside, he opened the window and couple more bokoblins squeezed inside. They shook off the snow, it looked like they were practically freezing cold but honestly where had they come from? He closed the window once he was sure there were no more, the bokoblins made excited noises when they found the other. "So he is one of yours? The travelers mentioned they had found him when the storm hit. Had you gotten separated?"
The new arrivals turned to him and one nodded, he was surprised they had understood him. He pulled up a few more blankets and furs for the new arrivals and allowed them to get comfortable. One was staring at the donkey however and moved back to the window to point. Revali looked out to spot three horses outside. He opened the window almost all the way and whistled to the horses, he was glad they practically rushed into the Divine Beast without further incentive. He then quickly closed the window and guided the horses over to where the Lynels were, the female had woken back up and pulled one of the horses close. The animals looked like they were pretty cold as well so he covered them with some furs. The pile was very nearly empty now.
"Hopefully the storm let's up soon," Revali said, before going back to tending the fire.
"What happened?" Link groaned. "It got really cold." His mate suddenly cuddled up to him, he grinned and wrapped a wing around the other male.
"Bokoblins, seems they somehow managed to find their tribemate," Revali whispered.
"Oh, how are we doing on wood for the fire?" Link asked.
"We are managing for now, but if the storm doesn't let up then," he didn't want to think about freezing in here, he already searched the interface of the Divine Beast and there was no warming function for the inside even though he could block them from the wind entirely. He turned toward a sudden movement, that had caught his eye and watched as a lizalfo suddenly vanished. "I know you are over there, come closer to the fire." The lizalfo reappeared and slowly came closer before curling up near it. The creature was a black Lizalfo, he was certain it was not the type that was well suited to the harsh climate of Mount Hebra. "There aren't many furs left but do feel free to use what we have to stay warm." he watched as the lizalfo looked at the pile of furs, before using it's tail to pull them over itself.
He wasn't even sure when the Lizalfo had snuck in but so long as they didn't try to harm him or any of the others he was giving shelter to, then he didn't mind it spending the cold night by the fire. The wind howled louder than before, startling him and some of the others. Even the Lynels woke to the frightening sound, thankfully the Divine Beast was sturdy and refused to give to the raging wind and snow. He smiled as the winds settled a bit, back to a dull roar whipping around fruitlessly. He went through the current bundle before day broke, unfortunately the storm was still raging outside. He looked to his sleeping mate curled up to him for warmth still, even in his sleep. In a way he was glad he had Medoh to protect them but on the other wing, he wished he had been more prepared for something like this. When the Lynels woke, he let them and the animals out before letting the animals back in. The Lynels took a longer time to return, the two males were first bringing with them large logs and then the female returned with a large prey animal.
Honestly he was amazed the Lynels were going out at all, it was quite dangerous. He was also surprised when the Lizalfo snuck back in as well, bringing a wildfowl that had frozen to death. He smiled, they would eat well for the day at least, he prepared the larger prey animal first. The Lynels helped with gutting and chopping of the firewood, it was a group effort to prepare everything. The meat was then cooked, while the frozen bird was left near the window, to keep it frozen until they needed it. He used rock salt and some spicy peppers in the meal, hopefully it would warm everyone up this morning. He then portioned it all out, then served his mate and himself last. The lizalfo made a noise in it's surprise then gulped down the food, it then curled up in the furs and closed it's eyes. Some of the occupants spent their time talking to one another, though he couldn't understand the different groups of monsters he could understand the hylians.
"So what did you happen to come all the way out here for?" the female asked.
"Well, I wasn't actually planning on coming out here," Revali said. "But I am looking for something that can only be found on Hebra Peak, I'm not sure if I should say anymore about it. I think my mother had been looking for something similar, so I want to find it for myself and find out what's so important about it." He left out the real reason, as his mate was listening to the conversation. He wasn't certain if he could tell Link, as it was his challenge to locate these ingredients.
"Oh? What will you do when you find it?" She asked obviously curious.
"I will probably take one with me," He answered. "Then collect a few more things, we are going to take it and some other requested items with us to the Great Fairy."
"How nice! So there is a great fairy then," She said. "Me and my brother are looking for the many wonders of the world, Great Fairy Fountains are just one of the things on our list. We were actually looking for something else out here, hoping to catch a glimpse of the dragon that is said to pass by near here."
"We haven't seen it though," Her brother said, sounding disappointed.
"Aren't you in the wrong place?" Link asked. "I have only seen the dragon in the eve just west of the of the Eldin Great Skeleton." Link replied.
"Skeleton?" she asked. Link pulled out his Shiekah Slate and showed her on the map.
"When did you have time to?" he began to ask.
"One of those days that Zelda left on her own and I had to go search for her," Link replied. "I climbed up to the top of this ridge and spotted the dragon as I was getting the lay of the land." His mate shrugged before closing the map and placing the sheikah slate back onto his hip.
"She did that often?" Revali asked.
"Yes, she really hated being followed," Link answered, leaning into him. He had no idea that Link had had to even search for the princess, why would she leave without any protection?
"Hm, did she actually doubt your ability?" he finally asked.
"I think she resented me, hated me if I am being honest," his hylian responded. "But after I saved her from the Yiga, she started to regard me differently."
"I don't think that was the case," Revali replied, matter-of-factually. "Urbosa mentioned to me once, that she was most-likely projecting her own failures onto you. I of course had made the assumption that she saw a lack in your abilities but I was wrong, I should have known better since we had fought after all. What was it I did to impress you anyway?" Link chuckled.
"When we first fought, you used quite a few impressive tactics," Link replied. "I was literally reacting at that point and slowly I might add. If the battle had continued, I most definitely would have lost."
"We did end on a draw," Revali replied. "You were pretty impressive too, being able to bounce back and hold your ground against my barrage. That first battle.."
"You kept impressing me though," Link whispered. "Being able to summon your own updraft, being able to fly in general and your dance. Seeing the multitude of colors from your feathers."
"Plumage," Revali corrected, he didn't want the other to use feathers to describe all of them. The proper term was plumage after all.
"Plumage," Link agreed, kissing the top of his beak. "Was that why you couldn't just dance at any other time?"
"Yes, there is always a specific time that is best for a rito to show off his colors," Revali answered. "For me, as for my father before me, it was always morning. When the suns rays hit my plumage just right, it shows off their unique coloring to the fullest." He tossed another piece of wood on the fire, as well as a stick or two. He peered over at the Lynels who were now huddling near the fire, the female seemed less concerned with her own warmth and stood closer to the window. Maybe it was fate that he and Medoh were here, for if they hadn't been.. then these creatures would have all frozen to death outside in this storm. The females ears shot forward suddenly as the snow suddenly began to ease, falling gently now. He stood and made his way to the window, it really was clearing up and what greeted him was a terrifying sight. Several creatures outside looked to be frozen solid in place, it seemed they hadn't had time to seek shelter. The female growled in the direction of the two males, he looked at her to see her tap on the window gently.
Revali opened the window and the cool air seeped inside, it wasn't nearly as bad as it had been earlier. The Lynels made their way out, clearly they wanted to get underway to where-ever they were going. He looked back to see Link was explaining to the bokoblins and the Lizalfo about flint it seemed. The Lizalfo accepted the flint but didn't take any of the wood, as it reached the window it called out and two of the creatures he thought were frozen suddenly jumped up. They landed in front of the black lizalfo, they were ice lizalfo and most likely better adapted to the area then their friend. The lizalfo shared a croaking creaking reunion, before all three headed out into the snow field. Then the bokoblins took their leave, pulling along the horses they had tamed. Soon it was just him, his mate and the two hylians and their donkey left.
"Thanks so much for allowing us to stay," she said. "We will just collect our things somehow."
"I will guide you around to the tail," Revali offered. She perked up at that and he led the way all the way around Medoh and followed the sloping snow up to the tail. He opened the door and helped pack all the boxes back onto the donkey, replacing some of their ropes with some extras of his own.
"Thanks so much for this," she said. "I won't forget it.. um.."
"Revali," he offered.
"I'm Kina and my brother is Jeb, if we ever run into each other again, or you see us on the road, feel free to drop in and say hi!" she offered. "Thanks again." Then she and her brother left leading their donkey along. He hoped they would be able to get where they were going, he made his way back over to where Link was. He helped pack everything back up, including the extra blankets and furs. He was surprised the bokoblins had decided to leave them. There was one or two missing, one was still on that donkey but they would probably need it and the other he wasn't sure about. He didn't mind as long as they were seeing some use.
"Desperation," Revali whispered. "I suppose even monsters want to live hm?"
"That was odd," Link added to his voiced thought. He smiled at the other male, honestly he normally wouldn't allow lynels or other monsters entry but after that storm. Maybe he was going soft, still he wasn't cruel enough to send them away. After all, those lynels had saved two hylians. He had to give them points for that much but what about the ideal that all monsters were, well monsters and were only focused on killing others? He supposed he would have to throw that ideal out. It didn't fit with the selflessness he had just witnessed, those lynel risked freezing to death, just so that everyone would not starve or freeze to death.
"They do seem to act differently," Revali mentioned.
"Maybe without Calamity Ganon's influence, they are more themselves?" Link asked. "Maybe the calamity was controlling them."
"Perhaps," he whispered. "Well while we are here, I might as well take a quick flight around and check out the peak." Link smiled. He did take the bag and bring it back to the roost, where he secured everything in it's rightful place during transit. Once outside he spotted Link making his way to the top of the Divine beast, using the slopes of snow that were left over from the storm. Once he was sure there no creatures were too close to the divine beast and chased off those that were, he landed and interfaced. The snow was heavy he realized as he tried to make Vah Medoh rise up onto it's talons. It took a lot for the huge beast to free itself but he managed it, that would do for now. He revved up the fans and opened all the doors shaking more snow and ice off as they did so. Icicles crashed and shattered from where they had formed.
After that was done, he hugged Link then made his way to the peak of Hebra Mountain. Once there he landed and carefully made his way the rest of the way up. A figure appeared at the top, he nearly slid backwards in his surprise as she took form. "You made it," she said simply. "You ignored my warning but you made it."
"I did not ignore it on purpose," he said. "Mom, is that really you?"
"Yes," She said.
"Why were you after the Winter's Kiss?" he asked. "Why did you.."
"I know you have a lot of questions but I can't stay here long," she warned. "Even now I can feel the after calling for me, calling me to the skies. The Winter's Kiss is the flower born from a hailstorm, it is a sign of courage and love. It is a great treasure that I wished to give your father but when I came for it, I was caught in a storm myself and died on this very peak. I regret not getting to see you, not getting to see him one last time. It is this regret that held me here."
"Did you have the gale as well?" he asked.
"Yes, it has been passed down generation to generation," she replied. "I did not get to teach you how to master it but I have watched you mastering it on your own. I'm so proud of you." She pressed their foreheads together, he actually wanted to cry out but held back that emotion for the time being.
"I wish you and father could have met my mate," Revali whispered.
"I have seen your mate," she said. "I am so very glad you have him, seeing you happy makes me feel that I can finally move on. Here, I'm sure you will wish to give this precious gem to him." He looked down to his wings only to spy the Winter's Kiss there, she had just given him the one thing he thought he wouldn't find in a very long time.
"Thank you for this," he said, looking up. But he was surprised to find that he was completely alone. He pulled out a wooden box from the bag and placed the frozen flower within, then he searched the skies one last time, hoping to catch a glimpse of his mother's spirit. "I won't forget this moment." he said before flying off, back to Vah Medoh, he would have to get the rest of the materials very quickly. He just hoped that he was as lucky getting the rest as he had been with this, arguably the hardest one to locate.
