CHAPTER SIXTY-FOUR
Website where all photos of all outfits mentioned is on my profile. 5 reviews gets next chapter early.
Gemma and I follow Jax to the hospital and when we get to the NICU ward the nurse I'd met the previous visit is on duty again, she sees the three of us walk in and smiles, rushing over.
"Nice to see you again Sarah, it's been too long." She comments as we walk down the hall.
I grin, "It's only been 4 days."
"Yes, but Jax here has been in every day and every day he says you'll come with him again and you haven't." She scolds.
I look at Jax and raise an eyebrow. "Sorry Anne, I didn't know I was expected. I've been busy buying a house."
Gemma puts an arm round Anne's shoulder and they walk off towards the kitchen, "You go see our boy. I'll be in in a second." Turning back to Anne we both hear her, "She brought to completely refit a kitchen, and a half, this morning in 20 minutes."
Jax and I step into Abel's room and I'm amazed at how different he looks, he's bigger then I remember. Washing my hands I step over to the incubator and poke my hand in, leaving the chairs for Jax and Gemma. When my hand touches his arm his heartbeat slows and I can't help the smile that stretches across my face. Jax pulls the chair over and sits down pulling me onto his knee.
I turn to look at him, "I'll stand, I don't want to stain your jeans if the cream runs."
Jax looks down at his pants and we both see it's too late, the second my leg touched his pants leg the cream that I had slathered over the fresh ink smeared across his jeans leg. I giggle and he looks at me like I'm going crazy. "I guess it's just as well I brought you some new jeans today."
Jax shakes his head, "You and your shopping."
I blow a raspberry at him, "So I'm addicted. It's not like I can't afford it."
Jax looks at his son and says quietly, "That's true."
We sit watching Abel as he stretches and attempts to move around, his tiny fingers grasp my fingers and I feel the warmth of Jax's arm beside mine as he gently runs a hand over his sons head, Jax's other hand is resting on my hip and out of the corner of my eye I see Gemma step up to the window that looks into the room.
"Your mother's watching." I say softly without turning my head.
Jax grins, "Oh well."
We sit there quietly for a few minutes and Gemma obviously tires of watching us do nothing when we hear the door open behind us and her footsteps enter.
I pull my arm out of the hole where it was and go to move away to let Gemma in but Jax's hand tightens painfully on my hip so I relax back to where I was.
Gemma steps around Jax and I and reaches into the plastic cube that's currently keeping her grandson protected from things he wasn't able to cope with when he was born.
We've been sitting in the room quietly talking about nothing of any importance for a while when the doctor comes in and looks round, "Nice to see you all here. I have some news about young Abel."
Jax moves so I stand up and get out of the way, he strides over to the doctor, "What's up?"
I try to manoeuvre around him so I can leave them with Abel's doctor, "I'll be outside."
Jax grabs my hand and pulls me backwards squeezing my hand tight I realise he's worried that something is wrong. I run my hand down Jax's forearm and he relaxes slightly I smile and mentally giggle when I realise both Jax and his son seem to lose their tense hold of their muscles when I touch them. Though the thought that any woman would probably help him relax flits through my brain as well but I shove it out and turn my attention to the doctor.
"Abel's vitals are strong enough to be able to come out of the incubator for short periods soon. He will still have to be in there most of the time, but its good progress."
Jax grins and shakes the doctor's hand before sitting back down and reaching back into the incubator. "Hear that little man, I'm actually gonna get to hold you properly soon." He whispers quietly.
Gemma steps over to the doctor and they hover by the door, I can hear her asking him all sorts of questions about how long Abel will have to stay now but a tug on my hand gets my attention back on Jax. He's grinning at me. "It's amazing isn't it?"
I nod and look down at the infant, "It's incredible Jax, he's incredible. I'm so happy for you."
Gemma comes back over and she starts filling Jax it on all the information she's gotten from the doctor, I zone out and start thinking about the renovations I want to start when I get the keys to the house.
Jax brings me back to the conversation when he taps me lightly on the hip with one finger. Blinking a few times I look at them and find they're both watching me intently. "Sorry, what?"
"I said, are you ready to go yet?" Gemma says standing from the chair she pulled over and returning it to its place by the wall.
"Oh, sure." I glance at the clock and I'm stunned to realise that we've been here for almost an hour and that it's just after 3pm.
We head back to the garage talking about Abel and how great it will be when Jax gets to hold him.
"Gem, do you think he'll let me be here? I'd love to be able to take some photos." I know I sound shy about it, I don't want to intrude on the moment between father and son, but I'd love to be able to capture it for Jax.
"Baby girl if you think you're going to be allowed to NOT be there you didn't notice anything I did today." Gem says, shaking her head in exasperation at me.
"What?" I ask I'm genuinely confused about what I may have missed.
"You really are clueless aren't you?" Gemma sounds like she'd like to bash my head with something hard, maybe a skateboard, in attempt to knock some sense into me.
"Jax has realised he's only fighting himself when it comes to you. He's a stubborn boy that son of mine. No idea where he gets that from." She says, the last sentence said with a grin in my direction.
"No idea Aunt Gemma." I say humour colouring my tone.
"As I was saying smart ass, Jax is going to fight this as much as he can, don't be surprised if he acts like an asshole at some stage. In fact, with the wrap party that's happening at the porn palace on Saturday will seem to him like the perfect chance. Now, I know you have a problem with Ima, he has some idea about that as well, so he'll use her I'm almost sure of it. You have a few choices on the issue. Unfortunately you're going to have to be there, none of the guys will miss this, and Clay wouldn't make them."
"I know Gemma. Luann told me there was a party coming up soon and I gathered that the club was expected to be there in force. But what are my options?" I ask, ignoring that Gemma is Jax's mother she's the Queen of SAMCRO and might have some sort of ideas for how to make the upcoming cluster fuck that's being labelled a wrap party work with me coming out of it still sane.
"You can either ignore it like it doesn't matter, which I can't see you managing, or you get there first and make sure Ima knows not to touch him. Or what I think might be the best option is for you to tell him that Ima's a no-go for him. The only other option you have is that you find someone you're happy for him to fuck, if you really want to torment him ask to watch." Gemma says, pulling into the lot and parking her car.
I'm stunned at her last suggestion and watching Jax get off his bike I can't imagine letting him go anywhere near Ima without me ripping her skin off inch by inch. "Ima is in no way, shape or form getting anywhere near him unless she wants to end up fish food. However, I do know one of Luann's girls who I can stomach."
"Good, well I'm having lunch with Luann on Thursday, so if you want to tag along and sort out your plan for Saturday you're welcome to." Gemma tells me as she hops out of the Escalade.
"Thanks Gem, I'll do that." I say as I trail behind her back into the office.
