The day had passed for too quickly and Emma wasn't at all looking forward to the family dinner that was happening in a few minutes. Not only would she have to pretend to be head over heels for Killian. But she'd also have to do it while he in turn simpered over her father. There was also the disappointment that was having to spend the night in the company of bird boy.
Yes! Emma's Mother had invited Robin to the family dinner night because 'he is Regina's soul mate and he cannot possibly be getting enough nutritious food living in the forest.' Like Emma gives a fuck that Tarzan isn't getting enough nourishment. He literally chooses to live there! It makes Emma wonder what will happen if he and Regina do get married. Will she go and live in the forest too? She can't imagine how that would work.
Regina is far too high class for that. She wore a goddamn power suit to walk through the Neverland jungle, for fuck's sake. Well, at least Roland will be there and that's one person who she enjoys spending time with. The kid is adorable and he idolises her. He wants to be sheriff one day, much to his Father's dismay. Which is a point for Emma.
She takes out her keys and steps inside her front door. She is too tired, and in addition to the scratches on her face is super sweaty from when she rescued a kitten from a tree. She makes her way to the bathroom, strips off and jumps in the shower.
She's ready and in her bug at ten to seven, with Killian sitting beside her.
'So, love. Did David mention me today?' He inquired. Emma can hear the hope in his voice and she cringes.
'No Hook, he didn't. Mainly because he is a happily married man and he has no idea about your super gay fantasies, ' she deadpanned.
Killian grinned. 'I do have a lot of fantasy's about him. There's this one where he's nake-'
'Shut the fuck up Killian, or I swear they'll be calling you Captain Hooks.'
'What's wrong, Emma? Have you not seen Regina today? You're only normally this cranky when you haven't had your daily fix of your only slightly Evil Queen.'
Emma sighed. 'She's not mine! And also, don't mention anything about fixes in front of my mother. She was convinced I had an addiction this morning. Robin is going to be there tonight and I'm going to have to pretend to like him,' she grimaced.
'Ah, that makes sense. You know they're not actually together though, right? And also, you do have an addiction. It's just that it comes in the form of a really hot but terrifying Mayor.'
'Not yet, but they will be. They've been spending more time together lately. Things would be much easier if we were both just straight. I wouldn't be pining over Regina and you wouldn't be fawning all over my dad. Now promise me that you'll behave tonight Killi. No sexual innuendo's to my dad about his sword okay?' Spoke Emma seriously, as she pulled up outside of the loft. Killian grumbled out a 'Yes Ma'am' and they left the bug and made their way up to the loft.
The door swung open two minutes after they knocked and they were ushered into the apartment by an over enthusiastic Snow, who was W earing a hideous woodland creature apron. Emma knows that she needs to tell her to seek help for her very obvious obsession, but she doesn't. Instead, she smiles and hugs her. When she breaks away from the embrace, she looks around and sees Regina, who is looking smoking hot as usual and she cries a little inside. She then feels a little body crash into her legs and she grins as she picks him up and hugs him close.
'How is my little deputy Roly today?' She says while she tickles his sides, making the adorable curly-headed boy giggle.
'I'm very well, Sheriff Emmy. Did you fight any baddies today?' He replies excitedly.
Emma laughs out loud at his enthusiasm. 'I didn't! But I did get to rescue a kitten from a tree.'
'You're so cool! Do you think I'll be that cool when I'm old?'
'Old? I'm not old, Mister. I'm actually super young, and you'll be way cooler than I am.'
Regina sits on the sofa and she can hear Robin talking to her, but what she's really interested in is not Robin or his words, but in watching in barely concealed adoration as Emma continues to talk animatedly to Roland.
She sighs as she wishes it was their child that the Saviour was fawning over and she doesn't mean Henry. No! They Mayor had been wanting another child for two years now, which was fine. The problem, however, was that she didn't want that child's other parent to be anyone but Emma Swan. She had somehow managed to stupidly fall head over heels in love with the beautiful blonde, who was now her best friend. But sadly Emma had the pirate, and she had a soulmate who was actually quite annoying. She knows that she should give him another chance but she just can't bring herself to kiss him when she knows he's kissed her sister.
She finally came out of her thoughts to look up at Emma who was now standing right next to her.
'Was there any particular reason you were sat staring at me, your majesty?' She smirked.
Regina feels her cheeks heat at being caught, but she laughs as she answers.
'Yes! You have dirt on your nose.'
It was Emma's turn to blush now, as she furiously attempted to wipe at her face. Goddammit! Would there ever be a day when she didn't make a fool of herself in front of a breathtaking brunette.
'Here, I'll get it,' chuckled Regina, as she sexily licked her thumb and brushed it over Emma's nose.
Emma beamed with goofy delight as she gave her an enthusiastic platonic kiss on the cheek, because that's what best friends do and she was the bestest best friend.
'Thank you!' She said, as they stared deeply in to each other's eyes. Totally platonically though. Although the rest of the room, apart from Robin because he never had a clue what was going on, would swear it was lovingly. Obviously they would be lying though, because best friends aren't supposed to fall in love. Are they? No! They certainly are not.
Their super-platonic staring was broken when Snow White's very annoying voice announced dinner was ready. Everyone made their way to the table and took their seats.
Snow had made a kind of pasta dish which looked disgusting, but everyone thanked her politely. Well almost everyone. Emma took a glance at Regina who was sat beside her and after one look at the Mayor's face she knew straight away that she had to distract her or there was going to be a meltdown before they'd even started eating. And then Snow would end up in tears for the second time that day.
'So, Robbie Redbreast. How is the child you had with your soulmate's sister while she was pretending to be your wife doing?' She asked casually. And it had the desired effect. There was a gasp from Snow, an awkward cough from David, twin snorts from Henry and Killian, all while adorable little Roland broke into fits of giggles as he repeated the word 'redbreast'.
The best reaction, however, came from Regina; who attempted to kick Emma under the table but missed and kicked David instead. He then in turn reflexively tried to kick the person back, but ended up kicking Killian who then flinched and swung his hooked hand backwards, effectively smacking Bird boy in the forehead and knocking him off his chair.
Robin was now on the floor, groaning in pain and holding his head while Killian rushed out an apology and tried to help him up. Snow was sat looking furious, while David comfortingly rubbed her back. Henry was busy trying to stop himself from laughing while Regina glared disapprovingly at him, Roland still couldn't get past the word 'redbreast' and wasn't paying any attention to what was going on around him. And Emma? Well Emma was sat with a grin on her face as if this was totally normal for a family dinner. Which, of course, it was.
They eventually got through the meal without another incident. Well not a particularly big one, anyway. Bird boy and David ended up having to swap seats because Emma kept choking on her food with laughter every time she looked at his face, which was now sporting a huge painful lump. That ultimately meant that she was now situated between him and Regina. So when Snow inevitably said something that pissed Regina off, Emma, who had reached for her hand under the table to give her some super platonic best friend support and to try to stop the fire ball she predicted was about come, didn't know that Robin had exactly the same idea as her. So they both sat through the whole meal thinking that they were holding one of Regina's hands, when in fact, they were holding one another's hands. Neither of them knew until Henry went to retrieve his dropped fork from under the table.
'Ew, Ma. Are you and Robin holding hands?' He asked, as his face scrunched up in disgust
Emma's face paled as she realized the hand that she was holding was actually gigantic, quite hairy, and definitely not the cute delicate little hand that belonged to Regina. She immediately dropped it in disgust as she jumped up from her chair.
'Dude! What the hell? You need to learn to keep your thieving, forestry, berry picking hands to yourself,' she yelled.
'EMMA! That was mean. Apologise right now,' scolded Snow. But Emma ignored her because it wasn't mean, it was the truth and she wouldn't apologize for telling the truth.
Regina was now sat looking quite amused. She had felt both her hands being reached for and had moved them to the side for no other reason than she was bored.
'I thought it was Regina's hand. It's not my fault your hand is all soft. And you were holding on pretty tight while also stroking my thum-' started Robin before he was interrupted.
'OMG! Shut up! Let's just forget it and play some games. Right after I go and disinfect my hands, obviously,' grouched Emma, as she made her way rapidly to the bathroom.
She was in the middle of washing her hands when Regina came walking into the room without knocking.
'Why do you hate Robin so much?' She asked curiously.
'Why do you hate Hook so much?' Countered Emma.
'Because he helped my mother come to Storybrooke and then he left me to be tortured by Greg and Tamara. After that he fucked off with the magic bean we needed to save henry, before he changed his mind and returned. But that was only because he wanted to get into your pants,' answered Regina smugly.
Emma winced. That wasn't the reason at all; the actual reason was that he wanted to get into David's pants, but she didn't need to know that.
'Right! Well I guess that is a good reason,' she replied.
'I know! So answer my question,' demanded the Mayor.
'I don't like his face,' she answered simply.
'That's not a legitimate reason, Emma,' smirked Regina.
'Er, it is when it physically pains me to look at it.'
'I'm not buying that. Are you jealous?'
'What?' Emma asked exasperated. 'Jealous of bird boy? Yeah, because I've always wanted to walk around constantly looking like I need a shit. And I've also always wanted to sleep with your sister, get her pregnant and live in the forest with a group of men,' she rambles with wild gestures. She ends up hitting herself in the face with her fist.
'For fuck's sake!' She groans in pain, as she brings her hand back up to her newly swollen lip. She can hear Regina giggling and she gives her a disapproving look, which seems to make it even more painful.
'It's not funny, Regina. All I really have going for me is my pretty face, and now it's ruined,' she whines.
Regina still has a grin on her face, but she composes herself. Emma is adorable and it makes the Mayor's heart hurt that she'll never be hers.
'I'm sorry! Let me take a look,' she replies softly, as she leans in close. She runs her thumb gently over her Savior's lips, while staring deeply into her sparkling green eyes.
Emma freezes as soon as Regina moves closer. Her breath sticks in her throat as she feels the brunette's thumb glide across her lips.
'Does that hurt?' Regina husks.
She croaks out, 'No.' Regina's stare is now flying from her eyes to her lips and Emma finds herself doing the same.
Their heartbeats pulse and their eyes flutter closed as they both lean in at the same time and moan simultaneously as their lips finally touch. Although Emma's moan was probably also because it actually hurt her bruised lip, but she's not going to dwell on that because Regina is kissing her. As if she's actually fucking kissing her, and it feels amazing. Her lips are soft and they taste like apples, which isn't actually that surprising.
The kiss lasts for about a minute before they both pull away, flushed and panting slightly. They stare at each other for a beat before regina breaks the intense eye contact and ducks her head bashfully. Emma is still frozen in shock as her brain tries to comprehend what just happened. She hears regina clear her throat, and she blinks to bring herself back to the present.
'Er, well... that was...'Splutters Regina, before trailing off, struggling to form words after the mind-blowing kiss
'Yeah' replies a still dazed Emma.
'I-I was just kissing your lip better. Best friends do that right?' Stutters Regina uncharacteristically.
Emma nods vigorously, 'Yes, absolutely, that was definitely a best friend thing. We're like the greatest best friends in the world. We should probably start giving out lessons.' She reassures.
They both stand awkwardly silent for a moment before it's thankfully interrupted by the knock on the bathroom door. Emma sprints to pull the door open.
'Hey kid, me and your mom were just doing some totally innocent bestie talking in the bathroom while I washed my hands' she rushed out as Regina comes to stand beside her, still lost in thought about what just occurred. She looks up at Emma's face and smiles. She is rewarded with a big goofy smile back. It makes her heart skip a beat and butterflies to flap wildly in her stomach.
They're so lost in each other's eyes again that they totally miss what Henry says when he starts speaking excitedly at twenty miles per hour.
'Someone just had true loves kiss, it nearly knocked grams off her chair and hook fell into grandpa and I'm pretty sure he groped his butt but the funniest thing was that Robin tripped over Neals toy and banged his sore head again and now he's crying, so are you coming back through?'
'That's great! Henry, well done! They answered distractedly, still lost in each other.
Henry shakes his head. His moms are weird, especially when they're looking at each other all gooey eyed, it's actually kinda gross, and he wonders why they haven't just gotten together yet, they're so clearly in love with each other. He really doesn't understand adults, and he's not sure he wants to.
He grabs each of their hands and drags them back into the living room, where Robin actually is sitting crying while Snow holds ice on his head. David and Hook are so very clearly ignoring eye contact both of them sporting red faces. No one mentions the true love's kiss again and they eventually do get round to playing some board games and Regina doesn't threaten anyone when she looses so she earns her sticker back, which means she will get her reward this week.
Emma is still thinking about the kiss as she drives home three hours later; what the fuck did it mean? It was without a doubt the best kiss she's ever had in her life. Did this mean that regina actually liked her or was it she really just kissing Emma's bruised lip better; should she keep trying to woo her or should she just accept that they're best friends and that's all they were ever going to be? She didn't know, but what she did know was that she needed a very stiff drink.
