Bloom Into You: After

The 'ladies night' at Miyako Kodama's cafe was a once a week experiment, but it was doing well. She had put notices online and in various feminist shops in the region, and they were having a good turnout.

"I'm surprised you don't promote it as a lesbian event," her lover, Riko Hakozaki, noted thoughtfully.

"I was tempted," Miyako admitted, "but... I get a lot of students coming in. I don't want a concerned parent campaign starting up, after they heard I was holding 'gay' events."

"Ugh," Riko made a face. "Point."

Miyako smiled as she saw two familiar faces arrive. "Sayaka, Haru. Nice to see you again."

"Ma'am," Sayaka bowed slightly. "I see the turn out is good."

"Hello," Haru smiled.

"Grab a table, I'll be with you shortly," Miyako added. "Are Yuu and Touko coming too?"

"They weren't sure," Sayaka started as she looked around, then stopped. "Urk."

"Sayaka?" Haru asked.

"That's my ex... sitting with another woman," Sayaka said flatly. "She told me she was straight, last I saw her..."

"uh oh..." Riko muttered, then Sayaka strode off to confront her ex.

Chie Yuzuki was smiling as she chatted, then a figure came up behind her. "Yes..." she turned, then froze.

"Chie-senpai. Been a long time," Sayaka said flatly.

"Friend of yours?" the boyish woman with short, black hair asked.

Chie winced. "Sayaka-chan and I dated when I was younger. Then I told her I was straight," she sighed.

"Ah," the other woman winced. "Nana Maki," she introduced herself, "take a seat."

Sayaka hesitated but Haru took one chair, pulling her down into the other. "Haru Edamoto, I'm Sayaka's lover."

"Don't put it so bluntly," Sayaka muttered.

Nana continued, "Chie told be what happened, in general terms."

Sayaka looked vaguely offended.

"You probably told Haru," Nena pointed out.

"Point," Sayaka conceded.

"The sad truth is... you just weren't her type," Nana said calmly.

"Huh?" Haru and Sayaka blinked.

Nana explained, "You see, when I first started out as a lesbian, I assumed that because I loved women, I'd love ALL women. The thing is, you eventually realize you have a type."

"And I wasn't her type..." Sayaka realized.

Nana nodded, "She kissed you, no spark or fireworks. So she assumed she was straight instead."

"Which she later told me." Sayaka sighed.

"Yup. Then she met me, and realized she liked a more butchy girl..." Nana shrugged.

"Damn," Haru muttered.

"I'm SO sorry for how I acted when I saw you again," Chie said sheepishly.

Sayaka made a face.

Haru offered, "Maybe we could just let bygones be bygones?"

Sayaka nodded reluctantly, "Okay... I'm not happy about it, but..."

Chie patted her hand awkwardly.

Nana added, "I don't knoe if we'll end up being friends, but it's a start."

End...?

Notes: Reading the Bloom Into You Novels, I found myself wondering what was going on with Sayaka's first girlfriend. I mean, she starts out aggressively exploring lesbianism, yet then goes 'OK, I'm straight now.' Seemed odd.

Nana's talk with Sayaka is based on a bit from a Karin Kallmaker novel. 'Substitute for Love' if I remember right...
