Yep, finally keeping a steady schedule for once. Me and Hazard are about 7-8 chapters ahead of this, so there's no need to fear about a shortage. Also, for those that are wondering why Asmodeus isn't more servant-like as in the manga/anime, Hazard wanted to go in a different direction, and thus planned out a different path that's honestly been a blast to write. Just remember that in THIS story, there was no clear winner of their fight, so things between them are different.
Enjoy. I own nothing.
Even after a few weeks, Izuku has never stopped being a joyous part of his life. Inko too, of course, but the joy of spoiling one's own grandson was a pleasure that could never be comprehended! That warm fuzzy feeling of giving whatever his precious grandchild desired was practically addicting.
It was too cute for words when he acted all flustered when he gave him new clothes, notebooks of the highest quality, and some of that high-end expensive (by human standards) hero merch Izuku seemed to absolutely adore. His little green bean practically fainted when he was able to procure a personalized autographed poster of that All Might fellow that the human world seemed to go gaga for. Oh, if only Izuku would adore him in the same way, then life would be even more perfect then it already was! He really lucked out with the deal with that heartless fool Hisashi, now he had a whole family all to himself, just like he's always dreamed.
Speaking of his darling grandson, all three adults of the house were able to notice the slight pep in the fourteen year old's step for the past few days. Izuku only spent two hours writing down all his theories about bloodline abilities instead of his usual three and a half hours, and this morning during breakfast he was noticeably less freaked out by the demon food his mother had grown to love so much (the one thing that was almost equal to spoiling Izuku with hero merch was spoiling Inko with food) and his smile wasn't the shaky nervous smile when he first got here, but a more relaxed, natural smile that he had Opera immediately photograph.
As he saw his grandson out the door for his daily walk to school, he noticed a certain jumpy demon girl waiting for him at the gate chanting his name. "Oh, I thought Asmodeus walked with you to school?"
"He does, sorta." Izuku answered a bit sheepishly. "He meets us more towards the entrance. I can't really blame him, when you can fly, why bother walking?" The kid raised a fair point.
"Should I bring the carriage then?" He asked, wanting to drive his adorable little grandson down to school. But he got the same answer he always got.
"No no, it's fine Grandpa! You really don't need to make a big deal out of it!" He shouts, shaking in place. Such a humble little boy, ah, to be young and pure.
"Well at least he and Clara are there to be with you, such good friends." He spoke, causing Izuku to flinch, shaking in place.
"Friends? Are you sure you're not shooting the gun with that description?" Izuku rubbed his head, looking at the ever cheery Clara. "Asmodeus talks to me sure, but things are a bit weird, like there's a barrier surrounding us that stops us from bridging that gap, and Clara, well, I have fun with her, and she's happy to be around me, but can I really be friends with her?"
This boy really over complicated things at times. "Well, I'm sure things with Asmodeus will sort itself out eventually, but as for Clara.." He directed his gaze at the cheery girl, already trying to climb the gate to get to her fellow green-haired companion faster. "Last time I checked, human's defined friendship as two or more people hanging out and enjoying each other's company. Are you telling me that's not how things are between you two?"
Izuku blinked in confusion, looking over as Opera was now trying to block off the girl's attempt to cross over said gate. "I … I don't …" He looked very conflicted with himself, as such Sullivan simply sighed and ruffled the boy's hair.
"Why don't you talk about it with them later, see if they agree?" He asked with a smile. He merely got a nod in return, but it was worth it. "Now then, I'm off to the school myself, we have to finalize the classes after all. Ta ta." And with his signature peace sign, the fingers extended to form three sixes, flew off into the air, excited for the news his grandson would bring home already. If only Kalego hadn't destroyed those hidden cameras around the school, there was a reason he cut the man's budget!
Asmodeus stood in line with Izuku and the abomination known as Valac, trying his best not to focus on her ranting as he looked at the list. "Hey Asmodeus-san, what are the symbols next to the dishes?" Izuku asked, not paying attention to the girl swinging from his arm at the moment.
"Those are the school ranks." A moment of silence caused him to look upon Izuku and see the boy stare at him with a curious look. "Let me guess, another thing you never learned about despite living with Sullivan himself?" A nervous nod caused Asmodeus to sigh. He could be unaware of summoning, Sullivan seemed powerful and wealthy enough that he probably never needed to 'summon' his familiar, rather it just lived with them. But for this bush haired teen to be unaware of rank, a national standard? The hell is wrong with this picture?
"Alright then, allow me to explain ranks. A demon's rank is determined by numerous factors such as strength, academics, behavior, etc. The higher it is, the more rewards, privileges, and respect you can get. For example." He pointed at the menu. "The bottom is for those who don't have a rank yet. An Aleph(1) can have everything next to it and lower. A Bet(2) can have everything next to it and lower. So on and so forth."
"Huh. So this basically divides everyone through power and social status." Izuku summarized with a grim expression that Asmodeus for the life of him couldn't figure out why. At least he could grasp the concept easily enough. "Figures I'd be back at the bottom again. Well maybe after all the hype dies down I can go back to the background. At least this time I-" He seemed to freeze on his own words, looking down on Valac.
"What's wrong, Izuku-kin?" She asked him with wide eyes of curiosity, and Asmodeus had to admit, he was equally as curious. This was the most information he was able to gleam from the honor student so far, and he wasn't one to waste an opportunity.
"Nothing, just remembering my old school. It was kinda far away." He gave a broken laugh but there was an odd pitch to it, almost as if forced. He unfortunately didn't get to reminisce further, as they were next. After getting some bicorn meat himself with bloody apple juice, he sat down with the group. "Anyway Asmodeus, I wanted to ask some more about your bloodline ability. So is it just fire, or is there anything else?" Izuku asked as he pulled out a notebook.
He decided to indulge the boy a bit as he let out a small smile, flames dancing on his fingertips as if in melody. "I can do anything I wish with fire as long as I have the mana to supply it, and the fire itself follows the laws of physics. Blasts, walls, swords. It's not a solid element so I try to use it's heat as a deterrent rather than simply beating them up." Izuku nodded, entering that weird dream state of his whenever he started writing.
This by far was something more … interesting Asmodeus noticed about Izuku. The boy had so many thoughts that they stumbled into speech and text. It ended up revealing an absurd level of analysis for magic. Yet the boy still took three hours to comprehend societal customs. He was brought off track by the mountain of food landing next to them.
Looking around he saw a group of upper years snicker and point, causing a frown on his face. Looks like someone needs to be taught a lesson. "Midoriya-" He cut himself off as he saw the honor student start eating without looking, all of his focus on his little book.
"If it's without limit as long as it focuses on the physical properties of fire then that's a wide range of creativity he has to work with. There's compressing the flames in order to create more thrust and force with each attack, increasing the temperature of the fire itself, shaping it into a whip for indirect movement. Maybe he could also use it passively in order to avoid hypothermia in cold situations. It could also combine with his wings allowing for rocket propulsion. But that brings me back to the wings themselves, are they biological in nature? Is there a sub pocket of mana used for stamina?" Izuku muttered as he idly ate at the large large pile of food, which quickly began disappearing into nothing."..huh, did you say something Asmodeus-san?" He looked over the now empty table. "Did I eat my lunch without noticing? Where did all these plates come from?" The upperclassmen that started the prank, as well as the rest of the cafeteria audience gasped.
Not only is this boy able to consume so much food without noticing, he did it while discovering how his magic worked on a fundamental level and expanding it in ways he never gave much thought of. Maybe he should try and mess with compression and temperature. Unfortunately before he could say anything else there was a scream. "Wonder what student is causing chaos this time?" He muttered, far too used to the casual screams than he should be.
"I don't know, it can't be Clara because she's right he-Clara's gone!" Izuku screamed. Shit, they can't take their eyes off of her for one second! If he wasn't such a danger-junkie maybe they could just leave her alone-and he's already gone. Great.
Azuki watched the chaos of the store take place, sitting on the sidelines as she drank sodas with her friends. Then again it was hard to define 'sidelines' when everyone gave that storefront a large berth. The Valac student was running around giggling as the shopkeeper tried again and again to stab her, as one does.
"Did you hear that she's hanging around Asmodeus?" Asked Konatsu, looking completely uninterested as she texts on her phone. Seriously, those guys over in Jackapo are not going to respond to some cute pics.
"Really? What the hell did she pull to get him to do that, blackmail, sexting?" Azuki asked in curiosity.
"Doubt it's the latter, her body type would give serious implications." The girls all thought over Haruno's statement before shivering. No way someone as perfect as Asmodeus would be a lolicon, it's unthinkable. "Anyway I think it's the other green haired kid, Izuku?"
"The honor student danger-junkie?" Azuki questioned out loud, a slight spike in her heartbeat was felt, though she didn't know completely why. "Huh, I guess he's been hanging around Asmodeus a lot too."
"Apparently since their fight they've just been at each other's side when possible, it's like he's got an interest in something." Konatsu muttered before pausing her activity. "Don't tell me Donsanko has a point." She said, turning to the grey eyestalk.
"He comes from the Asmodeus family, remember, they're probably all bi at this point." The one eyed demon pointed out casually. Huh, with her attraction to him, you'd think she'd be more against it.
"Well that means we just gotta put more energy into our affections." Haruno spoke out, standing tall. "Oh, I can see him now!" She shouted as the object of their desires walked past the crowds..right towards Clara Valac, who was being pacified, very poorly, by her fellow green haired maniac Izuku Midoriya, trying to stop the shopkeeper from piercing the gremlin. "Ughh, that danger-junkie better not do anything that messes up Asmodeus's face!"
"Relax, he's a dignified man, I'm sure Asmodeus will be unharmed by the end of this." Azuki spoke, ignoring the screams as Izuku was nearly stabbed by the shopkeeper, staring into his-Amsodeus's eyes, yeah, that's had a thing for green...tall, strong, and not green men! Although..something about shrugging off numerous fire attacks like nothing was pretty hot..not that she was into that! She likes bad boys! Wait, what was worse than being a thrill seeking danger prone troublemaker?
She was brought out of her thoughts as Konatsu gasped next to her. "Look, it's Kalego sensei! That guy's got such an aura of destruction …" Down girl, we could see the drool from here. They watched the teacher yell at the students before his eyes narrowed down on Izuku. They glared and muttered something they couldn't quite hear from their spot, but Izuku stood strong with that excited grin of danger seeking he was known for … such a wide smile at that too, long and mean and-she slapped herself to the confusion of her friends.
Valac decided to grab one of the familiar seals, grabbing and putting it onto Izuku's right hand. She then raised them high as that red cat from the summoning ritual came forth. Kalego started twitching again.
"Seriously, who hates cats? They're cute, fluffy and adorable." Haruno said with heart eyes.
"He just likes dogs better I guess? Either that or the demon is annoying" Konatsu guessed, looking at the fight between teacher and familiar. Seriously, how strong was that demon that their familiar form could punch that hard?
Valac then proceeded to start running with Izuku and Asmodeus in hand, leaving the others behind. The shopkeeper put a net onto the cat, saying someone needed to pay for the bill. Kalego stared at the demon in familiar form, before giving an evil laugh as he left him. God that's disturbing … "Seriously Konatsu, clean your mouth."
'Well, if he didn't hate me now, that pretty much sealed my fate.' Izuku's mind pessimistically thought about Kalego-sensei as the three of them made their way outside, away from everyone else. He seemed to have picked up the habit of gathering large crowds, essentially the exact opposite of how he was back in Japan.
Thinking about that made him wonder about what his grandpa told him this morning, and a sinking feeling came over him. It was pathetic really, but the truth was that he hasn't had a real friend since he was four years old, if he could ever have called Kaachan his friend at all. He looked over to the two he followed, both of them arguing over how to eat an ice pop. Asmodeus was saying to take it slow and savor it but Clara was somehow immune to brain freeze as she ate it all … stick included actually.
His body twitched as he looked at them. Could he really call them that, would they agree to it? Would they just ditch him and call him clingy? Eccentricity aside, demons were almost no different than regular people, and he's never mixed well with people in any case.
"Well, here's to hoping we all end up in the same class tomorrow!" Clara cheered, and Izuku paused. It took him awhile to realize this, but Grandpa really didn't prepare him for life in the netherworld beyond the bare minimum if he was only discovering simple facts like class assignment and ranks just now.
He considered talking to the man, but likely would just get the same answer Grandpa gave him on the first day … In which case it was 'blast away your problems'. 'I don't have magic grandpa, violence isn't an option!'
"Well, as hazardous as being around you two has been to me, I suppose it would be interesting to see if we're grouped together, Midoriya." Asmodeus commented, trying to block Clara from his view. "Though I highly doubt Valac would be there if that's the case."
"Whataya mean!?" Clara huffed. "Didn't you hear what Izuku-kins said about me!? I'm the strongest student in our grade! That means I'm your superior, Azz Azz!"
"In what messed up hell of a world would that ever be the case!?" He looked offended, but composed himself. "I was referring to grades, clearly I'm superior in that department if you damage your brain with all that headbanging and have the attention span of a fly," Asmodeus countered.
"What do you think, Izuku-kins?" she asked, only to get no answer. They turned to see him almost lost in thought, shaking a bit. "Izuku-kins?" She poked his head, causing him to snap out of his stupor. "What's the matter with you, you've been spaced out all day, even more so since you've barely written in that little notebook of yours." Crap, was he really that easy to read? The downside to having such a plain face he guessed.
"Sorry, it's just, there's been a lot going on in my life, and it's been hard to get a handle on it all." He quickly explained, giving the two of them a hard look. There was no one around except them, so this was probably the least embarrassing time he could ever ask them. 'Now or never I guess!'
"Would you two be my friends!?"
The two stared at him with looks of bafflement, like what he said was never considered. He knew it, this was a mistake! He ruined everything and now he had no one. Tears threatened in the corners of his eyes, he could feel them. Damn it! This would have all worked out if he just kept his mouth shut.
"What's a friend?"
Even now they're telling him why-... what? Izuku blinked, tilting his head. "What was that?"
"I asked what a friend was, I've never heard of that term before," Asmodeus asked as he looked Izuku over.
"Is it a type of mochi, is it good?" Clara asked with a completely innocent face.
Izuku sat there in shock, unable to comprehend this. The translator spell was working, right? "You two have never heard of friends?"
"Seriously, did you pick it up in some foreign land or something?" Asmodeus asked, now looking annoyed.
"Is it green mochi, wrapped up in a bun?" Clara continued to question.
'Is demon culture so vastly different that they've never developed the concept of friendship?' Looking back on it, he supposed it wasn't impossible to happen. Every confrontation he's been in so far has almost always been about superiority over others, and the rank system pretty much confirmed this world was a climb to the top one, almost like the hero ranking system, except this applied to the general public.
Wait a second, why would Grandpa ask him to talk to them if he knew demons had no concept of-nevermind, entertainment from his favorite grandchild. He kept his sigh internal, looking over the two, stumbling to find the right words. "Friends are, friendship is, it's about um … people who enjoy being near each other … help each other … and they try their best to support and comfort one another if they ever need help, and they don't even have to ask for it! You could ask for something, and it would just be a good thing to lend a hand, no money or trading required. And they play games and have fun, just living peaceful lives with each other."
He watched the two, looking for a reaction before Clara just laughed. He got it, they were just different species. They never had anything like friends before- "Silly Izuku-kins, we're already friends," she spoke as he felt his heart skip a beat.
"I wouldn't call us friends, but I do relent that being around you isn't as bad as expected. I've gained some very interesting insight." Asmodeus spoke, tears working down Izuku's cheek.
"Thank you guys, thank you so much," he said through the flood coming down his face.
"Why didn't you tell me you had a water bloodline!?" Asmodeus shouted, being pushed back by sheer water pressure. "That explains so much about our first fight! Wait, why didn't you use it against me!? Don't tell me you actually enjoy getting hurt!"
"This is fun! Weee!" Clara said, wearing floaties as she was swept away in the water. "I'm floating away, water slide!" She laughed to herself.
Izuku didn't care about the comment, and he could chase Clara to make sure she's safe later. Right now, he had friends for the first time and for so long, and he felt so happy for it too. Nothing could ruin his life now.
Inko watched Izuku head off to bed, a small smile on her face. "He's so happy here." A few days ago, she would've assumed Izuku was panicking all over on the inside and just putting up a strong front as he usually does, but she was proud to be proven wrong. "I guess living here really was for the best." One might call living comfortably in hell depressing, but she didn't care. Her son's joyful smile was more important than anything else.
She glanced over at Papa, putting pictures of her child's happy face into a scrapbook. Surprisingly large, but what could you do in this situation? She decided to ask about his day. "How was school Papa?" she asked him, the demon turning to face her with a wrinkly smile.
"Marvelous my dear, we double checked every student and teacher, making sure everyone got where they deserved to be." He chuckled. "I even pulled some strings to make sure Izuku could get his wish of blending in the background."
Now there was something they could look forward to! She had heard the school anthem from Opera-san, not the most calming thing to hear first thing every morning. "Really, how so?"
"I placed him in the one class that everyone in the school overlooks, next to students that stand out way more than him! The Misfit Class!"
That was nowhere near as comforting as he was trying to make it out to be. "Standing out in what way?" Her tone was tentative.
"Just the normal demon things taken too far. Making sexual advances on other underaged students, destruction of property, gambling that sent six-
"Seven sir."
"Thank you Opera-Seven people to the hospital, stealing valuables, cutting a teacher in half, the normal demon stuff." Every misdemeanor sent Inko into a minor panic attack.
"ARE YOU TRYING TO GET MY BABY KILLED!?"
Being yelled at by his sweet daughter for the first time, Sullivan sweated and slowly began backing away. "It's..It's all fine, Inko darling! It's not as bad as it sounds, and he's going to have his friends with him! And to double safety, I've even got one of my strongest teachers to double down on any trouble making students!" He assured her.
She gave him a skeptical look. "And which teacher would that be?" She asked, staring into his soul with a look only a mother could give.
"Kalego Naberius." He spoke with a bright smile.
She recalled Izuku speaking of such a man before, and from the sounds of it, he wouldn't be much better. "Fine, but if my baby ends up hurt, or worse, seduced by one of those harpies, I'll be hunting you ALL down," she promised, letting the man 'meep' quietly before turning to Opera. "Thank you for the meal Opera-san. Are you sure you don't need any help with the dishes?"
"Of course not, it's my job to make sure you're well cared for and comfortable." Their voice held a miniscule hint of mirth.
"You're such a good person Opera," she cooed, patting their head, despite the feeling of Papa's stare. The minute twitching of Opera's cat ears that showed happiness made her heart melt.
