Hey everyone! And we continue the story with this new chapter!
Good reading!
Chapter 3
The Watcher Uatu continued to contemplate the parallel Earth where the survival of the Zombie Apocalypse unfolded. There he saw the train that took the surviving heroes to Camp Lehigh in New Jersey. And the moral of our heroes was at an all-time low, when one of them, Hope, was infected with a zombie from a cut to the shoulder.
Hope was stretched out in one of the seats on the train, while Bruce Banner examined her. His prognosis wasn't good for the Wasp.
"Heart rate's elevated… (he put his hand on the young woman's forehead.) Temperature's not going in the right direction."
But Hope put on a look of determination.
"Then we both know what you have to do."
"What we have to do?" Supergirl said shocked and horrified. "Do you mean kill you? I'm a hero. Not a murderer. Even if you become one of these things, I'll never be able to kill you."
"Kara, there's no other way," Hope replied with a sad but resolute expression.
"No," Okoye exclaimed saddened. "Not when we could be minutes away from a cure."
"Can we really take that risk?"
Then it was Peter who joined Hope, saddened but confident.
"It's not risk. It's hope. And anyone who's seen a zombie movie knows that that's the key to survival. Plus, it's also your name, and that's gotta mean something."
Moved, Supergirl looked at the young man. He knew how to give pep talk.
"I like this boy!"
Even Hope was touched by Spider-Man's comfort.
"Oh, kid. How do you do it?"
"See all these movies?" Peter said smiling. "AV club."
"No. No, how do you stay so… upbeat? After everything."
Even Supergirl wondered. She knew Peter had been through rough times since the start of the doomsday pandemic. He had lost his aunt, his mentor, his friends… now Happy. This boy was overflowing with a maturity she hadn't expected to see in a teenager of this age. After all the tragedies he'd been through counting the catastrophic state of this world, it was enough to traumatize someone his age, make them fragile for life, but that wasn't the impression Supergirl got from Peter. She had not seen suffering, but resilience. He was a young hero. And she was proud to meet a brave youngster like Peter Parker.
In response to Hope, Peter shrugged with a look of resilience.
"Practice, I guess. My mom, dad, Uncle Ben, Mr. Stark. Now Happy. I've… I've lost a lot. But my Aunt May says… (He paused sadly before resuming.) …used to say, that if we don't keep smiling when they can't, then we might as well just be gone, too. (He took Hope's hand.) And... Well, they'd want us to keep going."
Banner put his hand on Peter's shoulder.
"And we will," Supergirl added, joining the young man with determination. "Do you see the symbol on my chest? (She pointed to the S on her outfit.) Many think it's an S, but it actually isn't. It's the crest of my family, where I come from on my planet Krypton. And it was based on hope. On Earth where I come from, Supergirl inspires hope in others, and when I see you guys, I tell myself that there's still hope for this world, despite what's happening. So as much to bring for those who do not have any. And that include you too, Hope."
"Thanks," said the Wasp gratefully.
It was then that Kurt arrived, interrupting this loving moment.
"Guys, uh, bad news, team. The train has run out of fuel."
"How far away are we from Camp Lehigh?" Banner asked.
"On the bright side," Kurt said, smiling, but still uncomfortable. "We are at least closer than we were. "
Hope moaned in pain and retorted in turn:
"And the not-bright side?"
Kurt turned to one of the train windows, answering:
"We're going to have to walk through that."
The other survivors stared out the window and discovered with horror a whole army of zombies waiting for our heroes to leave the train to attack and bite them.
Supergirl was amazed.
"Rao, there are so many of them. Even for us. It would be a miracle if we could cross it without being infected."
"Well," Bucky said resolutely. "Looks like our draft cards just got pulled."
"Supergirl isn't wrong," Okoye replied. "We will not make it through them."
"But you can make it over them." Hope said, standing up.
Peter then understood what the young woman had in mind, and could not bring himself to accept it.
"No, no. Hope, no."
But the Wasp replied with determination:
"Listen to me. We all know my time's up, okay? And if I have to go, I might as well go out fixing the mess I started. "
"Oh, come on, Hope." Banner replied in sorrow. "It's not your fault."
"He's right, nothing that happens is your fault," Supergirl retorted. "You couldn't predict that such a thing would happen. Neither you nor your father."
But Hope was still saddened as she recalled the terrible events that had led to this apocalyptic world.
"I was so obsessed with bringing my mom back that I never considered what I might bring back with her. I started this, but you are gonna finish it."
"You don't have to do this!" retorted the Girl of Steel with sorrow. "It's not gonna end this way. We're close to our destination. We may have a cure for you."
"It's too late," Hope replied, shaking her head. "I must do it for you, and for this world."
Later, the zombie army began to attack the train. Some had started to climb it when a giant appeared out of the train. Survivor Avenger the Wasp had just grown to giant size and towered over the zombies. And she began to walk, crushing zombies in the process by crossing her two hands. And she crossed, pushing back some creatures with her foot.
Inside her hands were Supergirl, Peter, Bruce Banner, Bucky, Okoye and Kurt staring at the horizon between Hope's giant fingers. They were witnessing a sunset.
As she continued to walk, zombies had started to climb her gargantuan body from her feet.
And finally, she was standing in front of Camp Lehigh. She lowered her closed fist towards the camp and opened it, bringing the group of survivors with the Cloak of Levitation down to the ground with them.
As zombies climbed over her body, giant Hope gave her friends one last look:
"Peter. Smile. Smile for me, okay? Supergirl… You're our only hope! This world needs you…"
At that, the zombies had reached her giant face and banged on the protective visor of her helmet.
The Wasp felt her strength leaving her and breathed her last as she collapsed her giant body on the zombies.
The sun was gone, giving way to darkness.
All had their eyes on Hope who had just collapsed. Supergirl remained shocked and saddened. None of them spoke.
After a moment of silence, Bucky brought the others back to reality.
"Uh, guys, why aren't they climbing the fence?"
They noticed that the wire enclosure at Camp Lehigh was overrun with zombies, but none of them moved. All remained in front of the fence, without moving or growling.
"Uh, they don't have to scale anything." Peter pointed out when he saw a breach in the fence and no zombies were coming.
"The true question would be why they don't come towards us?"surprised Supergirl in shock.
Okoye loomed large as Kurt shuddered in fear.
"We must be careful. Baba Yaga nears. I can feel her."
"Baba who, now?" Banner asked confused.
"Baba Yaga. The witch. Known to lurk in shadows of sacred burial grounds."
Then a hand rested on his shoulder, making him scream in fear. But it was just Peter who immediately calmed him down.
"Oh, no, I totally just jump-scared you. Sorry. I didn't mean to do that."
"It's just, Spider-Boy! Come on!"Kurt said reproachfully.
Then a new hand slapped Peter on the shoulder. Immediately, Spider-Man and Kurt jumped in terror upon discovering the Android Vision of the Avengers.
Much to the relief of Bruce Banner who went to join him, ecstatic. He took him in his arms.
"Oh, Vision! You're a vision! You have no idea how good it is to see a familiar and not one of those gross, half-eaten faces."
"One of the benefits of being an android. I'm not on the menu." Vision replied simply.
"Oh, that's it."
Supergirl joined them.
"Is that him, Vision? Thor told me about him too. (She saw the Stone on the android's forehead.) It's… it's one of the six Infinity Stones? The Mind Stone?"
"Indeed, the source of my power," Vision replied, glancing curiously at the Kryptonian. "Who are you?"
"She's Supergirl," Banner replied. "She comes from another Earth."
"So the Multiverse isn't a theory?" thought the android.
"Tell me, is it with the Stone that you keep the zombies at bay?"
Banner knew that the Mind Stone had immense psychic powers. So was that what kept the zombies from attacking our heroes?
Vision then led the survivors inside the Camp, past a terminal made up of computers.
He then explained his presence in New Jersey:
"The Mind Stone. The source of… well, me. It emits a sub-frequency that is not to their liking."
"Could that mean the infection is some kind of encephalopathy?" Banner assumed.
"Brain stuff." Peter replied.
"Precisely," said Vision. "The virus overloads the brain's limbic system. So once I discovered the infecteds' aversion to the Mind Stone, I experimented to see if targeted exposure might reverse their condition."
"Were you successful?" asked Okoye.
Then a very happy male voice echoed through the bunker.
"Ta-da! See for yourself."
They all looked up, looking for the origin of the voice.
"Hey, who spoke?" Supergirl wondered.
"Was a ghost?" Kurt exclaimed in dread.
"Oh, damn!" resumed the voice with annoyance. "Hey, would somebody turn me around? We messed up my entrance. You know, I need to get this thing motorized."
Supergirl saw Vision flip a chair… and what she saw she couldn't believe her eyes. On the chair stood a jar with a human head inside. The head of a man who spoke, like someone alive, while his body was missing. There was only his head in the jar. And this man was still alive. Supergirl wondered how such a thing was possible. Even though she was an alien, she had never had such an insane thing.
The human head smiles with a natural air.
"Hey!"
Supergirl's eyes widened in amazement.
"What the hell am I looking at?! It's a human head! And alive?!"
"Scott?!"Kurt exclaimed in shock and stunned head.
"Scott Lang?"said Bucky stunned.
"Scott Lang, as Hope's partner? Ant-Man?" said the Girl of Steel in amazement.
Scott's head resumed, still in a natural tone:
"Yup, I'm Ant-Man. Well… If I may say so."
"No… way" said Peter shocked.
"Oh, look at you." Kurt exclaimed in shock.
Scott replied with a smile:
"I know what you thinking I've lost weight. Thank you for noticing. But don't worry, I won't let it go to my head. (Seeing that everyone was in shock, he looked saddened.) Sorry, I tend to process traumatic events with dad jokes. Drives Hank crazy. Well, drove Hank crazy. Oh, man. Hank."
Seeing that he was about to cry, Okoye gently patted his jar.
"Hey, tulla, tulla, don't cry. You'll fog up your jar."
"Sorry, I know, I know," Scott said with a sad face. "It's just, what I wouldn't give to get chewed out by that old grump one last time. (And he resumed his natural smile.) Gah, I did it again! Zombie pun.…"
With indifference and a neutral tone, Vision resumed as if nothing had happened.
"Well, the operative point is I cured him."
"Which means you can cure others." Peter suggested ecstatically.
"In theory," the android said in a neutral tone. "But…"
"We'll need access to a satellite network to broadcast the Mind Stone frequency worldwide." added Bruce Banner ecstatically.
"And that would cure the zombie infection?"Supergirl added overjoyed.
But Vision didn't share their enthusiasm.
"Well, again, theoretically, but the technology required to do so is currently beyond human capability."
"Not in Wakanda." Okoye remarked cheerfully. "And thanks to our force shields, it remains the last human sanctuary on Earth."
"Then we have to go to Wakanda," said the Girl of Steel, smiling with joy. "Hope is reborn."
Bucky loaded his gun, retorting:
"I'll canvas the base, see if I can find us transport."
"Sergeant Barnes," Vision called out. "You will not find what you're looking for."
While Bucky left to explore the secret base, Bruce Banner studied the data collected by Vision.
"Uh, according to these security logs, we're not the first to respond to Vision's signal."
"More survivors?"Peter asked, puzzled.
"So where are they?" Supergirl added, intrigued. "They should be there!"
Bucky entered a dark room that must have been an old laboratory. He heard a sinister roar, then he shot a female zombie in a glass cage. And a voice he knew well came to his ears:
"Stop. You will anger her."
He ran to a curtain. As he pulled it, he had a horrific sight in front of him.
"T'Challa?"
In the dark, with his illuminating lamp, he discovered the former king of Wakanda, T'Challa, known as Black Panther, lying on a stretcher, with one leg amputated. The former king looked at the soldier in horror.
"Bucky. Is it really you?"
"Who did this to you?"exclaimed the Winter Soldier in horror.
"We don't have much time." T'Chala said in dread. "We have to run. Now."
"I'm sorry, Dr. Banner," Vision said neutrally. "I really do wish you hadn't found us."
"Why is there no one other than us here?" Supergirl asked suspiciously of the android.
"Vision, what the hell is this place?" Banner asked.
"A trap," said a voice behind them.
All could see Bucky return to the group of survivors supporting the old Black Panther.
Okoye recognized her former King and looked stunned as she joined him.
"Oh, we feared you were dead!" she said with relief.
Supergirl joining them, realizing that the man with the amputated leg was the King of Wakanda.
"What happened?" she asked.
And she noticed that Bucky was pointing his gun straight at Vision.
"The Vision grabbed me in San Francisco." Black Panther replied, casting a sinister glance at the Avengers android. "Thought he was saving me. He was just picking up takeout."
"What?" cried the horrified Kryptonian.
"He's been keeping him alive to feed his zombie bride." Bucky added, his gun raised at Vision.
"That goth chick." exclaimed Scott Lang's head. "I knew it! I was pickin' up vibes."
"Her name is Wanda!"Vision said in an imposing voice, having no guilt in his gaze. "And while your anger is predictable, I can assure you my actions, though unsavory, were nevertheless born of logic."
"Well, in Vision's defense…" Scott said with a natural tone, then his smile faded. "I've got nothing."
" Okay, wait, I don't get it." Peter said confused and stunned. "You cured the talking head but not her?"
"Her powers are too strong." Vision retorted. "They've resisted the treatment. The only course of action is to contain her and her hunger."
"So you brought us here to serve as a meal for your zombie girlfriend?"Supergirl said furiously. "We have lost allies by coming here. We came to see if there was any hope…"
"Why not eliminate her?"Okoye suggested furiously.
"I… I couldn't," replied the distressed android.
"You lured innocent people to their deaths, all in the name of love?"Banner added stunned and incredulous.
"Love. Sucks," Scott's face commented disdainfully.
"I still cannot entirely fathom what I have done." Vision said.
"So you should have no problem submitting to human justice!" Okoye replied, unsheathing her javelin.
But before she could do anything, a terrible rumble shook the entire base.
"What now?" Supergirl replied, stunned.
"It's Wanda," Vision replied, still calm and neutral. "You have awakened her. She hasn't eaten in days."
Everyone looked at Kurt who was closest to the doors of the computer terminal. A reddish glow began to flicker around the two metal doors, then they were ripped off their hinges, narrowly avoiding Kurt.
To his horror, he saw a reddish zombie that looked like a terrible witch.
"Baba… YagAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"
And Kurt was carried away telekinesically. Supergirl flew to catch up with him, but too late, the zombie had already devoured him. The Kryptonian then saw Wanda Maximoff become a zombie. Like all the others, her gaze wasn't human. She groaned, breathing terribly and eyed her prey with rage.
"Whoa! Watch out! She's a man-eater!" Scott warned. "There it is, I'm doing it again."
Wanda appeared from the air in front of the group of survivors. Supergirl attempted a nonviolent approach.
"Wanda! We can help you! Let us cure you! Make you human again!"
"She won't listen to you, Supergirl," Vision said, still neutral. "She has only terrible hunger."
The Scarlet Zombie roared and threw red energy balls that hit Supergirl. Bucky shot her, but Wanda levitated a metal door in front of her, shielding her from the bullets. She knocked the door to the floor, Bucky narrowly dodged it, but shoved the chair where Scott's head was in the jar. He was caught by the Cloak of Levitation.
"Ah, thanks. I feel like I'm back at prom."Scott said proudly as the Cloak wrapped around his jar.
Peter threw down his cobwebs to tie Wanda up. Supergirl took the opportunity to use her gel to freeze Wanda.
While Bruce turned to the Avengers android.
"Vision, we need your help. Get us out of here."
Okoye rushed over to throw her spear straight at Wanda, but she managed to free herself from its shackles and avoid being turned into an ice statue by the Kryptonian.
The Scarlet zombie let out a heavy roar and waved his hands. Immediately, Supergirl found herself beset with nightmarish visions. She was in National City on her Earth, completely deserted. And she saw the city overrun with zombies, much to her horror.
"No! No, it can't be! No, it didn't happen on my Earth!" she stammered with horror and dismay.
"Kara…"
The Girl of Steel turned to see her sister Alex, completely weakened with a red gash on her shoulder.
"Alex! Alex, you okay?" exclaimed a panicked Supergirl.
"No, I'm not okay…" Alex moaned furiously. "Why did you let this come to our Earth? Everyone's infected! You made it come to us!"
"No… it didn't happen…" the Girl of Steel moaned in horror.
"I was infected… I'm gonna be a zombie because of you!"
And she changed into a zombie much to Kara's horror. And her nightmare continued when she saw everyone around her (J'onn J'onzz, James Olsen, Lena Luthor and Brainy) turned into zombies.
"Rao… I'm sorry… I will save you all!" Supergirl replied with tears in her eyes.
And her sister turned zombie walked towards her with the intention of biting her.
"No!"
Immediately, Supergirl came to her senses. She was still in Camp Lehigh with Wanda above them who used her powers to attempt to reach the surviving heroes, who struggled to dodge them.
Bruce joined her.
"Supergirl, you okay? Wanda Maximoff has psychic powers! She can make you see things that aren't real!"
"We have to get out of here!" cried the Kryptonian, shocked.
"I believe you are right." Vision said, using a beam of energy from the Mind Stone which demolished the roof of the base.
Immediately, he flew away with Supergirl by his side. Bruce supported T'Challa. Bucky and Okoye both walked out, as the Cloak flew Scott's jar, who crooned happily:
"Wingardium Leviosa!"
As Okoye was about to exit, she was stopped and hovered in the air.
"Okoye!"T'Challa yelled seeing his warrior and friend in a bad position.
Wanda levitated Okoye with the intention of devouring her.
"No!" cried Supergirl in horror.
"OKOYE!" shouted the distraught Black Panther.
But the warrior gave them a solemn look, determined to her fate.
"Supergirl, save our world… My King, Wakanda forever!"
And she disappeared, carried away by Wanda.
Vision again used the Infinity Stone on his forehead to bury the entire base underground, creating a crater. Then he turned to the other survivors.
"We haven't much time. There's a Quinjet in the hangar." he said, pointing to a warehouse.
"You're not coming?" Banner said.
"I must atone for what I have done." Vision said emphatically. "But I cannot bring myself to leave her."
He ran his hand over his forehead and pulled out the golden stone with all his might with his fingers.
"Vision, what are you doing?" Supergirl exclaimed in shock.
The android pulled out the Mind Stone… which eventually unhooked, causing Vision to die, creating a slight explosion.
Immediately, the zombies outside Camp Lehigh began to move forward.
Bruce Banner slowly approached Vision's inert body and came to pick up the Mind Stone. Suddenly, Wanda emerged from the rubble and floated in the air, looking more terrifying than ever.
The Winter Soldier loaded his gun straight at her.
"Bucky!" Banner called.
"Bucky, she's too powerful!" Supergirl said, distraught. "You will never be able to defeat her!"
But the soldier gave all the survivors a determined look.
"Run! Supergirl, protect them! They need you! I'll save you some time! Now… run!"
Reluctantly, Supergirl ends up joining the survivors on their way to the hangar where the Quinjet was. Wanda landed on the ground, and gazed at Vision's lifeless body, moaning. Then she glared at Bucky who shot her. But the zombie Wanda levitated the bullets and sent them back to the sender, who used Captain America's shield to protect himself. The Scarlet zombie roared in rage, and gestured with her hands to levitate Bucky in the air and sent him far into the sky.
Then her gaze fell on the other surviving heroes entering the hangar. She wasn't done with them.
Thanks for reading and reviewing.
We're getting closer to the end! Glad to have written this story!
The fact that T'Challa be kept alive and amputated his leg is reminiscent comics Marvel Zombies, in which the character is experiencing a similar fate.
