Death and Afterlife
In the Necrohol of Mullonde, a fierce battle was fought as the master of the demon group known as Lucavi was defeated at the hands of one Ramza Beoulve along with his sister Alma and his party finally putting an end to the terror of Lucavi. However things were not as simple as the monstrous Arch Seraph Ultima was exploding with power.
"Need… power…" Ultima said as she was dying.
She looked at Ramza and his party who were on the floor and was not even moving as the place as the necrohol was reacting to Ultima's defeat and the place was on the verge of destruction. Ultima decided to make one last effort to make sure they suffered and she reached out her hand towards Ramza and his sister Alma who was lying next to Ramza.
"I won't let you!" Ultima declared angrily.
In her last attempt, Ultima used her last ounce of strength and lunge towards Ramza and his party and the next thing the explosion occurred all over death city of Mullonde. After some time, Ramza slowly opened his eyes and he slowly looked and saw that everything around was white and he felt as though he was floating.
"What is this?" Ramza asked himself as he looked around, "Alma! Alma!"
Ramza could not see nor hear even the faint of his sister.
"Agrias!" Ramza called, "Mustadio! Rapha! Marach! Count Orlandeau! Meliadoul! Ladd! Alicia! Lavian!"
Ramza didn't get a response and wondered if the worse had happened.
"You're wasting your breath," A male voice suddenly said.
Ramza was surprised and he turned to see someone who was average looking and had short brown hair wore black robe and hakama.
"Who are you?" Ramza asked.
"Me?" The person replied, "I'm here to take you to where you need to go."
"What are you talking?" Ramza replied back, "And you didn't answer my question, who are you?"
"All you need to know that I'm a Shinigami," The person said.
"A Shinigami?" Ramza asked.
"Yes, a death god to put it," The Shinigami said.
"A death god," Ramza said.
"Yes a reaper and I'm here to send you to the place called the Soul Society," The Shinigami said.
"What do you mean?" Ramza asked surprised, "I don't understand."
"The fact is that you're dead," The Shinigami said.
"…I see," Ramza said, "Well I figured that was the case with the explosion that had occurred."
"Yes and I'm here to take you to the afterlife," The Shinigami said, "The place called the Soul Society. So with that in mind…"
The Shinigami drew his sword and Ramza was shocked and steeped back a bit.
"Wait, what are you doing?" Ramza asked.
"Don't worry, it's not what you think," The Shinigami said as he pointed at the pommel of his hilt, "I'm just going to perform a Konso on you and you'll be sent to the Soul Society."
"But wait, can you least tell me about the people that I was with?" Ramza asked.
"Question time is over," The Shinigami said, "I must fulfill my duty."
The Shinigami suddenly appeared right in front of Ramza and Ramza was shocked as the Shinigami tapped Ramza's forehead with his pommel performing a Konso. A bright light surrounded Ramza and it blinded him. Not long afterwards, the Shinigami sighed and sheathed his sword.
"Well I did my part," The Shinigami said, "just like he asked. He better be grateful. This is completely out of the norm and if something happens…"
The Shinigami sighed and shook his head.
Rukongai, Soul Society
Ramza was surprised when he looked up in the sky and saw he was at a different place. He looked around and wondered if he was really in the afterlife, the place called the Soul Society.
"Where am I?" Ramza asked himself, "Have I arrived in the afterlife?"
Ramza looked and noticed that he was wearing a light blue robe with black vertically stripes.
"This just seems to be a forest," Ramza said.
Ramza looked around again and went on his way as he walked through the forest. Ramza didn't know anything and he had hoped that he would find something or someone that would be able to answer the questions that he had. Suddenly Ramza felt dizzy and was not able to keep himself together.
"What?" Ramza spoke, "I feel… weak… Why am I…?"
Ramza could keep his eyes opened and fainted laying on the ground. Meanwhile an average looking man with shoulder-length black hair and a mustache with brown eyes who wore a gray sleeveless robe was taking a stroll through the forest. The man was relaxed as he took his stroll. He then suddenly noticed something and got curious and went to where he was looking. When the man got there, he was surprised in what he saw and what he saw was the blonde haired young looking man Ramza who was on the ground unconscious.
"Now what do we have here," The man said, "Hmm, must be new here."
The man kneeled down and looked at the unconscious Ramza. After some time, Ramza slowly opened his eyes. He slowly looked around and observing his surroundings. Ramza realized that he was lying on the floor with a futon. Ramza then sat up slowly and looked around.
"Where am I?" Ramza asked himself.
Ramza stood up and found himself in a small house. He walked and went to the door that led outside He opened the door and went outside and when he did, he saw the shoulder length man who was folding his arms and looked at a view. Ramza walked towards the man.
"So you're finally awake young man," The man said.
Ramza was surprised and stopped and the man smiled and turned around to see him.
"So how are you feeling?" The man asked.
"I'm fine I suppose," Ramza replied.
"That's good," The man said with a nod.
"May I assume that you were the one that helped me?" Ramza asked.
"Yes I saw you on the ground," The man said, "I've never seen you before so I take it that you're new."
"I am," Ramza said.
"I figured as much," The man said, "did you died recently?"
"I… yes, I did," Ramza said, "I must ask, are we really in the afterlife, are we really at the place called the Soul Society?"
"Yes we are," The man said, "we're souls inhabiting in the afterlife called the Soul Society."
"I see," Ramza said and then he had his thoughts, "Then I really did die in battle," Ramza had a sad expression, "Alma… everyone…"
"What's your name young man?" The man asked.
"Oh right," Ramza replied, "I am Ramza, Ramza Beoulve."
"Ramza Beoulve," The man said, "That's quite a name."
"Uh right," Ramza said, "so this is the Soul Society. This is not what I expected being in the afterlife… especially with the clothes we're wearing."
"Yeah that's understandable," The man said, "in fact, we're in the Rukongai."
"The Rukongai?" Ramza asked.
"That's right," The man said, "it's a huge city that is actually divided by 320 districts in the north, south, east, and west and it's eighty in the north, eighty in the south, eighty in the west, and eighty in the east. We're in the fortieth district of the Western Rukongai called Takame."
"I see," Ramza replied, "um by the way…"
"Oh yeah, I didn't tell you my name," The man said, "It's Yuji. Yuji Matsuzaki."
"Yuji Matsuzaki," Ramza said.
"That's my name," Yuji said proudly.
"In that case, thank you Yuji," Ramza said, "you helped me out."
"Don't worry about it," Yuji said with a shrug.
"Still though, tha—" Ramza spoke but was cut off when he felt hunger.
"Uh, are you okay?" Yuji asked,
"I'm feeling… hungry," Ramza responded.
"Ah right," Yuji said, "let's go inside and eat first. I'll tell you while we eat. I'm feeling hungry myself."
Yuji and Ramza went inside.
Cemetery within the Gallione Province, Ivalice
A funeral was being held and a priest and several mourners were standing near the grave as the priest gave the sermon.
"Blessing of the Great Father descends and guides your body's return to the earth," The priest said, "May the grace of St. Ajora lead Alma's soul to the eternal shores of Paradise. There she shall find peace. Faram."
"Faram," The mourners said.
The priest and the mourners gave their final respects in front of Alma's grave. Afterwards the priest and two mourners left.
"It such a shame to happen to someone so young," One of the mourners said.
"Such an innocent girl," Another mourner said with sadness, "not only that, all the children gone in such a short time."
Afterwards the two left and the mourners who were left were an old couple.
"They say that not even the youngest son Ramza will even get a burial," One of the mourners said.
"The Beoulves' 300 year history is over," The other mourner said.
Afterwards, they left as well. Not long afterwards, two people showed up and went to Alma's grave and it was Orran and Valmafra
"Ramza, Alma," Orran said, "Forgive me for being late to come. I would have come sooner had not been the many eyes on me."
Valmafra stepped forward and placed a bouquet of flowers on the grave.
"Delita and Ovelia are now wed," Orran said, "A common born youth restores peace to the realm and now a ruler with the princess, he forges a new kingdom. A tale of such heroism that will be passed down for many years to come."
Valmafra stepped back and stood next to Orran.
"I believe Delita may be just the man you said," Orran continued, "pure of heart in the end. When Valmafra revealed herself for an agent of Mullonde, he made it appeared as though he killed her and then let her run. I think he may have caught a glimpse of himself in her, a tool manipulated by Lord Folmarv.
Valmafra told Orran that they had to go and Orran nodded in agreement. Valmafra went on ahead and Orran looked at Alma's grave again with sadness.
"My father," Orran spoke in sadness, "Did… did he die bravely?" Orran shook his head, "I'll return again. Be at peace."
Orran turned and walked but stopped and looked at the grave again.
"Are you truly dead?" Orran asked, "I still can't believe that you are gone. After so much…"
Orran sighed in sadness again. Unknown to Orran, he was being watched and the person watching him was the Shinigami that had sent Ramza to the Soul Society. The Shinigami watched Orran leave with Valmafra and then went on his way using Shunpo.
District 40 of West Rukongai, Takame, Soul Society
As Ramza and Yuji ate some rice, Yuji was explaining things to Ramza. He informed Ramza about the Rukongai and how there were 320 districts with eighty each of the north side, south side, west side, and east side and he also talked about the living conditions of the Rukongai and how the districts gradually descends the higher the number. Afterwards, Yuji suggested a place for Ramza to live and told him about a small house that was currently vacant. After some time, Ramza thank Yuji again for helping and left his home. Ramza walked down the hill and was observing the place that he was in. He was walking through the village, there were people going on their typical day. The village was a tight nit group and everyone knew everyone. Most people gave looks to Ramza who was a stranger. As Ramza made his way to the vacant place that Yuji mentioned, he started hear swings. He got curious and he looked for the source. He found the source and it was a brown haired teenage boy wearing light red sleeveless robe and was doing katas with a long stick. Ramza just looked at the kid that was swinging a stick like a sword. The teenager suddenly noticed Ramza looking at him and stopped and stared at the blonde haired young man.
"Huh, who are you?" The teenage boy asked, "I've never seen you before."
"Oh right, pardon me," Ramza said politely, "I am Ramza, Ramza Beoulve and I actually just arrived here."
"Oh really?" The teenage boy replied, "And what the hell are you staring at me for?"
Ramza was a bit put off because of the tone from the person sounded hostile.
"My apologies," Ramza replied, "I was hearing you swinging and I got curious."
"I see," The teenager said, "well I'm going to tell you right now. I don't like you."
Ramza was surprised that the boy just said he already did not like him.
"…So you don't like me," Ramza replied.
"No I don't," The boy said, "in fact, the village, no, all of this district would be better off if a stranger like you wasn't around."
"What it about me that you don't like?" Ramza asked, "This is the first time we met and already you seem to hate me. Was me seeing doing some swings offended you that much?"
The boy pointed his long stick at Ramza which caught Ramza by surprise.
"Don't question me," The boy responded, "a stranger like you have no business here."
The boy swung his stick at Ramza who was dodging the swing.
"Hey stop this at once," Ramza said as he was annoyed.
"Shut up," The boy said, "you don't belong here. I won't let a repeat of what happened before. You're planning to do what that scumbag did."
"What are you talking about?" Ramza asked, "Who are you talking about?"
"Don't play dumb," The boy responded angrily, "you think I don't see what you're planning? I see right through you!"
"I seriously don't know what you're talking!" Ramza responded.
"Takeshi!" A female voice called out, "Stop it! What are you doing?"
The teenage boy named Takeshi stopped when he heard the voice and Ramza was curious as he and Takeshi turned. There was a teenage girl who was running to them. She had a mid-length light brown hair and wore a light pink robe with a yellow stripes and a yellow sash. The girl stopped and looked at Takeshi.
"Satsuki," Takeshi said.
"Leave him alone Takeshi," Satsuki said, "You're attacking someone for no reason."
"I'm not, there is a reason," Takeshi said, "This guy has no business being here."
"Stop it," Satsuki said, "you're just lashing out and on a random person."
"We know everyone here," Takeshi replied and pointed at Ramza, "we don't know him."
"That's enough," Satsuki demanded, "You're not making any sense."
Takeshi was taken aback at Satsuki's words.
"He's obviously new here," Satsuki continued, "we should be welcoming, not hostile and besides, the one who caused us pain was actually from the Seireitei."
"The Seireitei?" Ramza asked.
"Just please stop Takeshi," Satsuki pleaded.
Takeshi clenched his teeth and then turned to Ramza with hate.
"I'm on to you," Takeshi declared, "You don't fool me."
Takeshi angrily left and Satsuki sighed sadly and then turned Ramza.
"I'm really sorry about this," Satsuki said.
"Is he always this hostile?" Ramza asked.
"Not really," Satsuki said with a sad tone and expression, "it's just…" Satsuki shook her head, "we've all had bad experience. It's not something you should worry about. My brother is being irrational."
"Your brother?" Ramza asked, "So you two are siblings."
"Um yes," Satsuki said with a nod, "anyways I'm Satsuki. Who are you?"
"I'm Ramza Beoulve," Ramza answered.
"Ramza… Beoulve, hmm, quite a unique name in my opinion," Satsuki replied and smiled, "anyway nice to meet you."
"Nice to meet you too," Ramza replied with a smile.
"So Ramza, if you don't mind me asking, where are you heading to?" Satsuki asked.
"Oh I was going to this small house that Yuji pointed me out," Ramza said, "I'm told that it's by the river and that it's vacant."
"Oh that place, I know what you're talking," Satsuki said, "Do you know how to get there?"
"I do," Ramza said with a nod, "Yuji directed me."
"Okay good," Satsuki said, "I should get going. I need to talk to my brother."
"Sure and thank you," Ramza replied.
"You're welcome," Satsuki said.
Satsuki went on her way and Ramza went on his way as well as he was heading to his destination. Later on, Ramza arrived at the place and saw the vacant small house.
"Guess this is the place," Ramza said.
Ramza went in the small house and looked around and saw a futon and what looked like to be a shelf.
"Guess this is my new home," Ramza said.
Zeltennia Province, Ivalice
At the ruins of the old church, Ovelia who was the Queen of Ivalice was looking up in the sky and she was not happy. She couldn't believe in what she felt was going on and she decided how she was going to respond. Steps were being heard and it was a Chocobo and Delita who had become King through marrying Ovelia was riding the Chocobo. He stopped the Chocobo and saw Ovelia was relieved to see his wife.
"There you are," Delita said, "everyone was looking for you."
Delita mounted off the Chocobo and went and approached Ovelia while Ovelia who still had her back turned on her husband felt disdain. Delita looked at Ovelia and then he brought out a bouquet of flowers.
"Today is your birthday," Delita said, "these flowers—"
Delita didn't get to finish what he was saying because he suddenly felt a sharp pain which made him drop the bouquet. He was shocked to see that he was stabbed with a dagger and he saw that Ovelia had just charged towards him and stabbed him with a dagger and it was the same dagger that Agrias had given to her the last time they saw each other and Ovelia looked at Delita with hatred while Delita was shocked that she would take such action.
"O-Ovelia?" Delita spoke still surprised.
"You would use everyone and toss them aside or even eliminate them once you're done with them," Ovelia said in anger, "Now you would kill me just like you killed Ramza!"
Delita clenched his teeth and then he took his own dagger that he kept and proceeded to stab Ovelia with his own dagger. The stab was fatal and Ovelia slowly fell on the ground. Ovelia didn't look surprised that she was just stabbed as she figured that it was going to happen regardless just as she lay on the ground dead. Delita dropped the dagger and held one of his hands on the place where he was stabbed as he stepped back and he felt miserable. He slowly walked back and then went to the side of the ruins and stopped and looked up in the sky with sadness.
"Ramza," Delita said, "What did you get out of all of this? I… I got this…"
The Next Day, District 40 of West Rukongai, Takame, Soul Society
Ramza came out his new small house and stretched his arms.
"I might as well walk around the district," Ramza said, "just to get familiar with Takame."
Ramza went on his way to walk around the district. Ramza walked around and got to the area where it was a market.
"This must be a marketplace here," Ramza said.
Ramza looked around seeing people conversing with each other and transactions going on for vendors and their stalls using kan as currency to buy things. Ramza walked and looked at the stalls and people talking to each other and some people were buying things. As Ramza continued to walk through the marketplace, there was a long black haired golden eyed woman in a white and pink kimono was walking and was being accompanied by two servants that had swords on their hips. Ramza glanced at the woman and then just went on his way. Ramza and the woman walked past each other. The woman suddenly stopped.
"Oh, what's that?" The woman said suddenly and turned to face Ramza, "You there."
"Hmm?" Ramza responded as he stopped and turned to face the woman.
"I sense something," The woman said, "something unique… exceptional spirit energy. Spirit energy that is quite…" The woman smiled, "pure."
"Huh, I beg your pardon?" Ramza responded.
The woman smiled, "I sense a sort of a unique power inside you," The woman walked and got a bit closer to Ramza, "You're only the third person that I've met with such exceptional spirit energy and if trained, you can be very powerful here."
"Okay I have no clue what you're talking about," Ramza said.
"Hmph, that's okay," The woman said sounding amused, "it's always interesting walking around here in the Rukongai. I've met an interesting soul today, you. Well anyway it's time for me to go but hey, if we're lucky, we might meet again," The woman turned around, "Farewell."
The woman left with her two servants and went on her way and Ramza just stood there and was confused.
"That was unexpected, what was that all about?" Ramza asked himself as he was confused, "That lady is just... interesting."
Ramza went on his walk and shaking his head. He sighed and wondered what he was going to do. After some time, Ramza walked through the plain area of the fortieth district and he suddenly heard people talking. Ramza looked and saw five people. Three men were surrounding two men that looked well dressed and they were carrying bags.
"Are those bags for your master in the Seireitei?" One of the men asked, "You just leave them here."
"There must some great things in there," The second man said, "I'm sure the others will be pleased."
"No wait, please," One of the well-dressed men said, "we can't let have them. Our master wants them so we can't just—"
"Shut up!" The third man interrupted and kicked pleading man, "Insist on refusing and you will die."
The third man unsheathed a sword and pointed it at the two men much to their horror. Ramza saw what was happening and was shocked and decided that he was going to intervene so he rushed over to where the five men were.
"Wait, stop!" Ramza said.
The five men were surprised and they looked and saw Ramza who approached them. The three men looked at Ramza and didn't appreciate someone who seemed to want to stop them.
The first man went to Ramza and glared at him.
"Huh, who the hell are you?" The first man asked, "I've never seen you before."
"Hmph, he must be new here," The third man said.
"Oh yeah," The second man said and then turned to Ramza, "Well whatever, you get the hell out of our sights or…" The second man drew his own sword and pointed at Ramza, "do you plan to get in our way?"
"We can appreciate the fact that you're new here so you're not familiar of how things are here," The third man said.
Ramza looked and see what was happening.
"What you three are doing is not right," Ramza commented, "You're trying to rob these men."
"Rob?" The second man asked, "Is that how you see it?"
"This isn't robbery," The third man added.
"Please don't insult my intelligence," Ramza responded, "I know what I am seeing."
"You misunderstand," The first man said, "what we're doing is fighting back against the greedy and selfish nobles of the Seireitei."
"The nobles of the Seireitei?" Ramza asked, "What are you talking?"
"Hey, what's the hold up?" A male voice spoke, "What's going on?"
Ramza and the five men looked and saw tall muscular man was coming. The tall muscular man was bald and wore a dark red robe and holding his sheathed sword on his shoulder.
"This new guy here is implying that we're robbers, thieves," The second man said.
The tall bald muscular man looked at Ramza and raised an eyebrow.
"I never seen you here before," The bald man said.
"I'm Ramza Beoulve," Ramza responded, "I just arrived here."
"So you are new," The bald man said, "figured as much. Since that's the case, I'm going to inform you what's going on. We're fighting in a conflict and that conflict was started by the nobles of the Seireitei."
"The Seireitei," Ramza said, "I was told that it's the capital of the Soul Society and the people living here are nobles and members of the Soul Society's military branches who are known as the Shinigami, the Gotei 13, the Onmitsukido, and the Kido Corps."
"That's right," The bald man said, "we're basically at war with them."
"War?" Ramza asked.
"That's right, war," The bald man said, "Against the nobles of the Seireitei."
That's it for this chapter. Next chapter: Ramza is introduced to a group going against the inhabitants of the Seireitei.
