Alright, next one down the hatch! We're back to the main events. It's now summertime in the DxD universe (and fall in ours) so we gotta get this show on the road. (As if real world seasons have anything to do with it lol.) We have a LOT to get through, so let's try to move as quickly as we can. Because in this arc, the "fated day" is coming. Peace treaties are always bound to bring troublemakers out of the woodwork. And when said "troublemakers" finally come face to face with the living embodiment of all of the sins they have wrought… Khaos is sure to follow…
(Also, get ready, there's gonna be a lot of dialogue in this one. It is the prelude to the real shit after all. We've gotta get all the good character stuff in before shit hits the fan. If it feels slightly drawn out, bear with it. It certainly ends on a good note, trust me...)
PEACE..?
Issei knelt down before his parent's shrine to pray after setting their offerings, just as he did everyday. Once he was done, he opened his eyes to look at his left side. On his left, Rias was there, praying just like him. Apparently, since Buddha is of different origin, it won't affect Devils as much when they pray to him, there is no pain, only physical discomfort. Issei assumed that he must be a forgiving guy. Meanwhile, further down the line, Asia was praying as well, also to Buddha instead of her usual deity. It was something he never thought he'd see, even more so than Rias. Even Raynare was also there, right beside Asia, praying in the same fashion.
Instead of moving, Issei decided to keep kneeling and sit comfortably in the silence.
"..."
He couldn't help but move his gaze downwards, towards the floor under his knees. But more than that, he couldn't help his imagination running off without his consent either. In his mind, he could see the severed hand of his mother lying right in front of him as he sat in an expanding pool of blood.
'Okaa-san, otou-san…. Right now, I…. I have more than I could probably ever imagine myself having after your deaths…. I have Maki, I have Oji-san and Oba-san, I have Baa-chama. I even have friends of all kinds…. And yet…. I don't feel happy. No, that's not it…. What I don't feel is...satisfied. I lack comfort…. Yes, that's it…. I don't feel "comfortable." In fact, I feel "unsettled." Something is gnawing at me from within. Or maybe it's coming from the outside…? Ever since what happened with Kokabiel, I've been feeling a little less unsure about who I am, but…. There's still something within me that feels...off. As if I haven't been "fulfilled" just yet…. And the worst part is...I know exactly where that feeling is coming from..'
The reality around Issei began to shift. Darkness surrounded him and Issei felt like his body shrunk and the clothes he was wearing were changed.
—He was a helpless child stuck in an empty house once again.
'Yeah…. I know this feeling…. And even though I know the source of it, even though I know I shouldn't pursue it….. I don't know if I'll be able to hold myself back when that time comes…'
Just as Issei was having these thoughts, a visage of his childlike self appeared in the pool of blood below him. It was like looking into a mirror, except this mirror was staring straight back at him with hollow eyes. No matter where he turned his eyes to, the gaze of the visage remained locked onto him, as if the reflection was frozen in time.
'That's right…. If that day comes when I face your murderers…. I won't have the strength to stop myself.'
—Then, in a rare display of emotion, Issei's childlike visage contained within the bloody reflection smiled demonically, and the color of its eyes changed.
'Kaa-san… Tou-san… When that time comes, please forgive your foolish son. And also...'
Issei turned to his right, where there was nothing but an empty space. No, there was something there. Someone.
Right beside him, the image of Marie Bellerose was there, praying just like the others.
'..I hope that you forgive me too… Because when that time comes…. I don't think even you would be able to stop me.'

Part 1
Two weeks after the incident involving Kokabiel, things had finally settled down. Or at the very least, it seemed that way on the surface.
"Asia, your skin is so soft. I'm jealous."
"Eh? N-No, not at all… Buchou-san's skin is much more delicate and beautiful than mine is."
"Oh, you're too kind. Yours seems a bit fairer though. Maybe because of your ethnicity?"
Issei couldn't help but groan tiredly. Once again, he's found himself in an unthinkable situation.
—Right now, Issei was in the bath, a place he usually thinks of as his solace from the daily hardships of his life. An oasis, if you will. Yet now, that peace has been disturbed by an unusual presence. Three presences, to be exact, all of which are women. Women that live in his house. Yes, it's just as you presume. Right now, while Issei sits on his own, Asia is sitting not too far from him with Rias washing her back, and Raynare in between both sides.
In case you were wondering how exactly this situation came to be, it was something like this:
Issei removed his clothing and entered the bath. He prepared the hot water beforehand and sat down, ready to wash his body before entering the tub. However, just as he did, he heard the sound of muffled voices outside of his bathroom.
"Ah, Asia, Raynare. Are you two heading into the bath as well?"
"Oh, well… We think that Ise-san might be in there so.."
"Oh, I see. In that case, if you'll excuse me."
"Eh? Where are you going?!"
"I'm going to join him, of course. If you two have reservations about it, you can wait until our turn is over. Now then."
"W-Wait! If you're going in there, then..!"
Issei brought his hand up to his face and rubbed it with a rough sigh.
"Ugh…"
"...Even though I'm usually the one who washes Asia's back.."
Raynare grumbled to herself enviously. Instead of washing Asia like she usually would, she was stuck washing herself with Issei silently doing the same right beside her. Issei tried his best to ignore all of them and just rationalized the situation as "saving water" in order to cope with it. Besides, it isn't as if all four of them can fit in the bath together, so they'll inevitably be taking turns anyway. Whatever the case, this is just more of the hassle that he wanted to avoid by coming in here, but at this point in his life, that might be a truly worthless effort.
"..H-Hey.."
While Issei was washing himself absentmindedly, he heard the voice of Raynare beside him snap him out of his thoughts. For some reason, she was holding up a washcloth. Her face also appeared flushed, likely thanks to the humidity of the bath.
"Um… You, uh… You want me to wash your back for you?"
For a while, Issei remained silent, but eventually, he refused.
"No, that's alright. I got it. You don't have to trouble yourself."
He thought that was the end of it, but for some reason, Raynare hesitantly insisted.
"..I-It's no trouble, really. I don't mind."
Because of her insistence, Issei misunderstood her intentions and seemed to gain the wrong impression.
"...You know, you don't have to try to placate me anymore. I'm not going to do anything to you. I won't hurt you, no matter what. I've already made you and Asia that promise. You don't have to feel the need to suck up to me either. You're an equal in this house now."
"I-I know that… That's not why I'm doing this. I'm just...offering, is all."
Issei was confused. He didn't really understand what she was getting at if that wasn't her intention. And now, she won't even meet eyes with him. Out of all the women Issei knows, Raynare is probably the one he understands the best (and vice versa), and yet, he has no idea what brought this on. Nonetheless, he decided that it couldn't hurt and reluctantly agreed.
"...Well, alright, I suppose."
With Issei's confirmation, Raynare moved behind Issei and began scrubbing his back. Unlike with Asia and Rias, however, these two were fittingly quiet.
"..."
"So… About what you talked about with Rias before.."
"..Yeah?"
"You sure you're gonna go through with it?"
"Yeah… Even though I'd rather remain the way that I am now, at the end of the day, I need as much power as I can possibly have, to protect Asia. And remaining the way that I am now...it won't do."
"I see.."
A brief silence overtook them.
"...You have a really broad back."
"..Well, I am a man after all."
"Yeah, you're right… And, on the other hand, I'm a woman, so… if I…"
"..? Sorry, I didn't quite catch that."
"N-No, it's nothing. Just thinking aloud to myself.."
Another swath of silence overcame the two, and just as it did, Raynare finished washing Issei's back with a rinse of the bucket.
"Okay, all done.."
"Thanks."
"Don't mention it.."
"Oh, hey."
Right as Raynare was about to return to her original position, Issei brought up a wash towel of his own.
"Let me get yours too."
"..!"
A surprised expression flashed over Raynare's face before she turned her head away. Her eyes inevitably drifted over to Asia, who was now washing Rias's back.
"T-That's okay.. You don't have to.."
"I know, but I want to."
"Why..?"
"If someone offers to wash your back, you wash theirs. That's just how my parents raised me."
"I-I'm not trying to disrespect your parents, but… I just…"
For whatever reason, Raynare was reserved. In fact, she almost appeared to be hugging herself using her arms, as if deeply anxious about the suggestion.
"..!"
At that moment, Issei realized it.
"Nevermind. Forget I said anything. My bad."
When Raynare looked at him again, Issei had shut his right eye and his expression contained a lingering guilt somewhere within it.
"..."
For a moment, Raynare bit her lip and the embrace she held on herself tightened, as if she was bracing herself for something.
"...Okay…"
Only a moment later, she was sitting back in her original position with her arms placed firmly at her sides.
"..G-Go ahead."
"...No, that's alright. I told you, you don't have to listen to—"
"—I know. I know…. I'm just doing this because…. Because I...trust you."
Issei didn't know what to say. He wondered if this was just her pushing herself. Whatever the case, he couldn't insult her resolve by refusing again. So, he sat behind Raynare and, as gently as he could, brought his washcloth up to the skin on her back.
At first, she flinched, causing her whole body to tense up.
"You alright? Did that hurt?"
"N-No, I'm fine… It didn't hurt, I'm just...fine. Keep going.."
With some hesitation, Issei continued. Raynare was still visibly tense for a while, but as time passed, her body became more and more relaxed and her breathing calmed down.
"It doesn't hurt…. yeah, it doesn't hurt at all…"
She kept whispering those things, as if reassuring herself, but at some point, that stopped too. And with a quiet sigh of relief that only Issei could hear, she appeared to have fully relaxed herself.
"..Hey, uh, Ise-sama?"
"Yeah?"
"...Thanks.."
"No problem."
"No, I mean….for everything… I know that when we met, we started things off really… you know…. But I just want you to know that I… I forgive you for everything that's happened between us…. And I hope that you can forgive me too, someday.."
"I already have, Raynare."
"I see….. Thank you…."
"Don't mention it."
Once again, the silent air returned, but this time, it was a far more comfortable and peaceful one.
—From the side, despite the feeling of frustration and how much it bothered her, Rias held her tongue. Out of respect for Asia, and perhaps even Raynare, she refused to interrupt the scene going on not too far from them, even if it irked her somewhat. It simply wasn't part of who she was to meddle with someone's reconciliation of their trauma, no matter how complicated it made her feel to witness it. Even so, she decided to keep her eyes away from it and just remained seated while Asia washed her back.
From behind Rias, Asia continued silently washing Rias's back with a moistness built up in her eyes. It wasn't from the bath, but from happiness.
When Issei was finished washing Raynare's back, she turned her head to face him a bit and tried to say something.
"Hey, uh, by the way…"
But when she turned around, it seemed like she actually didn't quite know what to say.
"I, uh… Um… I… Well..."
"—Ahem."
Now Rias was standing over the two in all of her naked glory with folded arms upholding her bosom.
"Ise. Don't you think it's about time you entered the bath? Any longer and it'll go cold, won't it?"
Issei didn't notice it, but Raynare and Rias exchanged glares at each other while he stood up.
"Yeah, I guess you're right."
Rias's eyes "subtly" observed Issei as he stepped into the bath on his own, only to be followed shortly after by Rias's body this time when she got into bath with him.
Splash!
"Uh.."
Instead of explaining herself to the confused Issei, she said it to Asia and Raynare.
"You two are satisfied with that for today, right? Then just let me have this, at least."
Raynare looked at Asia, who was laughing awkwardly. Seeing as Asia wasn't particularly bothered by it, Raynare decided to let it slide and waited with Asia for their turn.
Meanwhile, Issei sighed in annoyance at the complex situation he found himself in. At the very least, he was thankful that Rias seemed to be lost in thought for some reason, because otherwise she might have noticed the unfortunate "physiological response" that Issei had literally no control over pressing up against her back.
Part 2
"Alright, have you guys gotten what you came for?"
Issei asked the girls of his group as they reconvened in the food court of the mall. Yes, the mall. You see, they were currently going "swimsuit shopping," apparently.
Initially, Issei had no interest in such activities, especially as a man who doesn't have a complex range of taste for fashion. That being said, Asia appeared to be keenly interested in Rias's suggestion, so of course this ended up being the result. At the end of the day, he can only follow along with a sigh. So while the girls, Asia, Raynare, Rias, Xenovia, and Akeno all went shopping for their swimsuits, Issei and Kiba did the same in their own spots. After they were all done, they met up in the food court, which happens to be now.
"Mou, Ise.. You didn't even respond to the message I sent you."
"Of course I didn't. There was a photo attachment so I just didn't open it."
"How horrible! I never take pictures like that for anyone!"
"You shouldn't."
While Rias puffed her cheeks angrily in response to Issei's dismissive attitude, Issei couldn't help but smirk under his breath. At this point, he found it amusing to mess with Rias this way, especially with how forward she is. It reminded him of someone he once knew. The only downside was that acting this way only served to make Rias even more forward with her advances. Despite that, Issei couldn't help his behavior, it simply felt like the natural response to him.
"Uu… Buchou-san bought such a bold swimsuit. And she even has the courage to message Ise-san photos of it… Meanwhile, someone like me is…"
Asia pouted sadly in disappointment with herself, but Raynare comforted her like usual.
"Don't worry about that, Asia. You shouldn't take notes from such a shameless approach like hers. It's unladylike, right?"
"Is there something you'd like to say to me, Raynare?"
"Just what you heard, succubus."
And like what has become the usual, Raynare and Rias were glaring at one another again. Ever since Kokabiel, and even the bathing incident, the frequency in their quarrelling has only increased. Issei didn't quite understand where it came from initially, but every time it involves him and his interactions with the girls of the ORC, the tension between them gets worse somehow. Frankly, from Issei's perspective, it's just a slight nuisance.
"Well, anyway, let's just get some food, alright?"
—The situation was quickly defused and the group ordered some food to eat. At some point during the meal, Issei stood up.
"I'll be back, I'm heading to the restroom."
"Ah, I'll go with you, Ise-kun."
Issei, accompanied by Kiba, headed to the restroom. After relieving themselves, Issei heard his partner's voice while washing his hands.
[A shopping trip, aye? And for "swimsuits" no less. Brings back memories, doesn't it, partner?]
"..Mm, yeah."
"Yeah what, Ise-kun?"
"Ah, it's nothing. Just talking to Ddraig. Let's head back."
—It wasn't until the two exited the restroom that Issei felt a presence that halted his step.
"Oh, wouldja' look at that. A wild gator came out of the restroom."
That voice was something which confirmed his immediate suspicion without even turning around. It was indeed a person familiar to him.
"Bal."
When Issei inevitably turned to his right, he saw Bal casually leaning against the wall beside the men's restroom. Bal greeted Issei with the casual salute of his two fingers. Although this person was familiar to Issei, he was a stranger to Kiba. After all, Kiba wasn't present when the rest of the ORC encountered Bal.
"Is this someone you know, Ise-kun?"
"Yeah. The Fallen-Angel from Grigori, Bal."
Hearing that, Kiba immediately went on alert.
"Fallen-Angel?!"
"Cool it, Kiba. He ain't a threat - to us. At least not for as long as I've known him… Besides, we're in a public setting right now. Even he won't do anything stupid.."
"Yeah, what he said, pretty boy. Cool your jets. If I was here to start trouble, I wouldn't be be stuck wearin' this damn thing, now would I?"
Bal finished by pointing at a device around his neck. It was a device that appeared equal parts technological and mystical. A ring-like object made of a metal material with a finely rounded shape and smooth like aluminium, but with mystical runes that were glowing eerily with an aquamarine-ish color all around it. Just by looking at it, you could feel its power, and you could also tell that it was an advanced type of technology at the same time.
"..What's that, a new fashion statement?"
For what Issei might have thought was the first time ever, Bal let out a disappointed sigh.
"Haah… I wish, man. Nah, this is my "ankle monitor"... Or more like my "neck monitor," I guess."
"Monitor? Wait… Don't tell me… Are you sayin', they put a fuckin' collar on you?"
For some reason, Issei found it mildly amusing when Bal nodded defeatedly.
"Haha. I don't believe it. They finally put a leash on your ass, huh, mister troublemaker?"
"Ugh.. Pretty much. On top of that, I got put on this boring watchlist. Now, "Shemmy's" probably got his eyes on me like a hawk. Or an owl, I guess? Ugh, who knows. All I know is that I'm stuck doing boring shit for boring people all the time. This is probably the most 'fun' stuff I'm gonna get to do for a while, and it starts with me just escorting VIPs all over again. It's really the worst right now."
Issei narrowed his eyes suspiciously.
"..Another VIP, you said?"
"Yup. Top priority. And for a guy who doesn't even come close to needin' it. Oh well. At least he's the least boring VIP I could've gotten stuck with. Shemmy would've just lectured my ear off and "Baki " is such a hardass, he probably would've never said anything to me. Even so, sightseeing and exploring ain't really as much of my version of fun as it is for him. Haah… But, it's better than lab work, I guess."
"..Who is this VIP?"
For a moment, Bal raised an eyebrow incredulously, as if to suggest that Issei should already know. But soon, Bal's face turned into a smirk and he pointed behind Issei and Kiba.
"It's only been 5 years and Japan already feels different. That's why I love this place. There's always something new to experience."
[—?!]
Issei and Kiba both turned on their heels at the sudden voice behind them. Standing there was a handsome man who appeared to have aged like wine into his late thirties or early forties, with golden streaks in his black hair. This was someone that Issei had already met once before, long ago..
"Yo, Sekiryuutei. It's been a while, hasn't it.. Looks like you've grown quite a bit too."
The man— The Fallen-Angel, greeted Issei with a cool smile and a cool voice while leaning his arm against the restroom's entrance. Unlike when Issei was a preteen, the Fallen-Angel wasn't as much of a giant as he seemed to be anymore.
With this man's appearance, Kiba was even more so on alert than before.
'What?! When did he get behind us? I didn't sense him at all! Was he in the restroom with us the whole time?!'
Unlike with Bal however, Issei's attitude was completely changed by this Fallen-Angel's appearance. This time, Issei was on high alert as well, almost as if he was ready to fight at any moment, something which only made the Fallen-Angel's smirk wider.
"Heh. It looks like your little spat with my General had an effect on you after all. Even though I think we were on pretty friendly terms before?"
"You again… So this time you've come to my homeland, huh.."
Although Kiba didn't lower his guard, he questioned it internally.
'Ise-kun knows him too..? On top of that, did he just call Kokabiel his "general?" Then that means, this person is…!'
"Don't get ahead of yourself, kiddo. Believe it or not, but this time, I'm not here for you. I'm here for more important matters."
"Important matters, huh? Like what? Pickin' up your dead friend's corpse? Sorry to tell ya, but there probably ain't much left of him."
"You're right, there certainly wasn't. For more reasons than one.."
The Fallen-Angel said it while taking a quick glance at Bal, causing his subordinate to avert his eyes awkwardly. But that intimidating glare was brief and he quickly resumed his laid back attitude in a flash.
"But, no, it's not that. That's already been taken care of. Thanks for that, by the way. I would've preferred to have it handled the way I originally intended, but things in this world don't always go as planned. It's unfortunate, but that's the way it is. In any case, it wasn't much skin off my back to have the "Dragon of Misery" handle it as opposed to the "Dragon of Ruin." What I wanted was a live capture, but that's neither here nor there. Anyway, I'm actually here for some official business. And truth be told, it has less to do with you and more to do with the natural state of this world."
The Fallen-Angel's cryptic attitude and phrasing caused Issei to raise a brow.
"The natural state of this world..?"
"Conflict. War. —That's the natural state."
[—?!]
Both Kiba and Issei were set off by the Fallen-Angel's words. It wasn't a threat, from the looks of it, but such words weren't to be taken lightly from a person of this caliber.
"Whoa, a bit antsy, aren't we? Well, after what my bullheaded subordinates have done, I can't say I blame you. Believe me, I don't use those terms lightly either. Unlike him, for me, that isn't something to be talked about like they're someone's hopes and dreams. The world has no need for those types of ambitions anymore."
Issei wasn't entirely sure if he misunderstood because it seemed too good to be true, but he couldn't help letting up his guard ever so slightly after hearing that.
It was only when the Fallen-Angel smirked at him that Issei realized it and resumed his full defense. For what reason this crow was smiling, Issei didn't know.
—Back with the rest of the group at the food tables, Rias was beginning to worry.
"They've been gone pretty long already… It shouldn't have taken that long, should it?"
"Maybe one of them needed to defecate?"
"X-Xenovia-san! Y-You can't say that, it's unladylike!"
"Raynare, can you check on them?"
Although Raynare appeared hesitant to fulfill Rias's request, she stood up nonetheless.
"Look after Asia."
"We know."
Raynare walked away from the table and took a position that allowed her to have a clear view of the restrooms at the edge of the food court. What she saw made her eyes widen to the fullest extent, her face pale, and caused her teeth to start chattering uncontrollably.
(—?!)
"...A..A-AZ….E.."
When Rias looked over to where Raynare was, she noticed her mortified expression and went on high alert. It was a similar expression to the one she made when she came face-to-face with Kokabiel. No.. This one was worse.
"Something's wrong. Raynare's expression changed."
Everyone else went on alert as Rias turned to Koneko.
"Koneko. Can you tell what she's saying? For some reason, I can't read her lips."
With her greater than devil-average hearing ability, Koneko focused on Raynare's voice.
"...?!"
"What is it, Koneko? What did she say?"
Koneko uttered it morbidly.
"..Azazel…!"
[—?!]
After that, the rest of the group wasted no time in running towards where Raynare was and catching sight of Issei and Kiba's position. Next to the duo were two other men, one familiar and one not, but both undoubtedly a shock to see.
The Fallen-Angel smirked.
"Oh? Looks like they've noticed us."
Issei and Kiba turned their heads to see their friends standing across the food court with shocked expressions. The Fallen-Angel— Azazel— removed his hand from inside of his Yukata and casually waved back at them. Whether or not he looked directly at Raynare or not, it made no difference. His action still caused her shaking to increase and even tears began to well up in her eyes.
"R-Raynare-san! Are you alright?"
"Let's go, everyone! Asia, you and Raynare stay back!"
With Rias's command, the rest of the group went towards Issei and Kiba hastily. Seeing this, Azazel smirked again.
"Heh. Looks like they're heading over here after all. Alright, that's our cue then. Let's go, Bal. We'll be seeing each other again, Sekiryuutei— Hyoudou Issei."
Bal stopped leaning against the wall and placed his hands in his pockets.
"Comin' boss~ Haaah…. Man, guard duty is so lame.."
When Bal passed Issei however, he briefly placed a hand on his shoulder and whispered something only to him.
"—They're still out there."
(—?!)
Although it must've been pure coincidence, that phrase nevertheless remained in Issei's mind for the rest of the week.
"Viceroy Azazel!"
Rias called out to Azazel in a threatening manner, all of her group surrounding Issei in a defensive manner. Meanwhile, Issei seemed eerily silent and physically frozen in place for some reason. Azazel only stopped and looked back for a brief moment. And with a smirk, he continued walking, only saying one last thing with a playful tone.
"We'll talk soon, Crimson Ruin Princess."
As the two Fallen-Angel's created more and more distance between them and the Devils, Azazel whispered to his subordinate.
"..You shouldn't go off doing things like that, Bal. You know that Shemhazai can hear the things you say, don't you?"
Although he expected his subordinate to answer, he received no reply. When he looked down at his side, he saw that Bal was grinning madly.
"...Keep that up and he'll make sure you end up just like Kokabiel."
"This isn't a joke!"
Rias shouted with an angry expression on her face. The group was back in the clubroom again, having an emergency meeting after what happened at the mall. Rias was clearly upset with what happened, but likely not as much as Issei or Raynare.
"Even though it was decided that the meeting of the Three-powers leaders would be held in this town, to think that the Governor of the Fallen-Angels would intrude on my and Ise's territory and interfere with our business..!"
Rias was practically trembling with rage. Issei mentally appreciated the fact that Rias acknowledged Issei's homeland as his territory, but it seems like excluding her from that part was impossible after all.
"And to top it off, to try and lay a hand on my most precious person!? Haven't he and his lackeys tormented my cute Ise enough in his life already?! Now he's even coming after his Sacred Gear, I bet! Unbelievable! He deserves to die a thousand times over! No, a million times over! All of his eternity should be spent suffering in the furthest depths of Hades!"
While Rias went on with her angry tirade, Issei found himself glancing over towards Raynare on one of the sofas. Her expression clearly communicated her uneasiness. From beside her, Asia spoke up.
"..Are you alright, Raynare-san?"
"Huh? Oh, I'm... I don't know. I'm sorry, Asia."
Raynare frowned and lowered her head, as if ashamed of herself. Seeing this, Issei felt compelled to say something.
"Hey. Don't worry. Whatever happens, I've got your back."
Not expecting such a declaration, Raynare made a surprised face before turning her head away from Issei's direction. For whatever reason, she seemed like she didn't want to face him.
"Y-Yeah... Okay..."
Issei found her reaction peculiar, but didn't think too hard about it. What bothered him more was Rias standing beside him with her arms folded, scowling at him as if he did something wrong.
"...I really can't let my guard down around you for even a minute, can I?"
Issei wasn't entirely sure about her implication, but he had a hint, and he ultimately chose to sidestep it. He leaned back on Rias's desk and crossed his arms.
"You shouldn't ever let your guard down, amatuer. That aside…. As much as it bothers me that this Azazel guy just popped up out of nowhere to hang out in my town, I don't think he's planning anything nefarious like his friend was. He's a suspicious fellow, and so is his escort, but I wouldn't expect anything seriously dangerous from him."
"That might've been true the first time you met him, Ise, but times have changed. I'm sure what Kokabiel did had some major ramifications to the relationship between the three-powers that we aren't even aware of yet. That must be why the leaders are even meeting up in the first place. The Viceroy might not seem threatening, but we can never be too careful. After all, a discussion between the three-powers concerning a possible "peace treaty?"... If there was any time to plan something nefarious, it would be now.."
Issei remembered the words that Bal whispered to him.
("They're still out there..")
Issei lowered his head and under the cover of his bangs, his expression darkened to a sinister degree.
"...I know."
—But soon, a magic circle bearing a familiar crest would come to interrupt the meeting.
"Azazel's always been that kind of person, Rias. But I'm sure he isn't planning anything like what you're worrying about."
SHIIIIINN!
And out from the magic circle emerged a familiar duo.
"Onii-sama!?"
"Although Azazel is fond of toying with people, as you now know, he isn't one so reckless to try anything like what Kokabiel did. It lies outside of his interests anyway. But I must say, he arrived in Japan sooner than expected."
At the sudden appearance of the Devil-king, Sirzechs Lucifer, and his french-maid companion, all of the Devils in the clubroom took a knee except for the confused Xenovia. Asia gestured with her finger about whether she should follow, but Raynare simply shook her head and told her not to worry about it.
"There's no need for that. I'm here on private business."
"Private business? Has something happened?"
To Rias's question, Sirzechs seemed to smile quite joyfully as he pulled a flyer out from his suit pocket and presented it to his sister.
"Isn't it obvious? It's almost time for "parent's day" at school. I was thinking I'd attend. It should be fun to see my little sister studying hard in person."
Rias made a horrified face at the proposition and she began stuttering in an uncharacteristically flustered manner.
"What?! T-This is..! D-Did you tell him about this, Grayfia?!"
"Naturally. The notice came to me because I am tasked with scheduling for the house of Gremory. As Sirzechs-sama's [Queen], I am "obliged" to inform him as well."
"Don't worry, Rias. Father is also coming, of course."
"Th-That's not the problem, idiot! We just...can't have a Devil-king neglecting his real work over nothing is all! R-Right?"
Sirzechs' expression then shifted to a more serious one.
"No, actually, this is also tied to my work, Rias. I'll be giving your grounds a "preliminary inspection" of sorts— because your academy will be hosting the three-way conference between the Devils, Fallen-Angels, and Angels."
[—?!]
"You're holding the conference here, Onii-sama?!"
Issei stood up from the desk he was leaning on and glared at Sirzechs.
"And who gave you permission to do that..? No, more like, what makes you think you can even do it in my hometown to begin with?"
The atmosphere tensed a bit, but before Rias could say anything about it, Sirzechs raised a hand and decided to confront it for himself.
"..With all due respect, Hyoudou Issei, we don't necessarily need your approval for this. From an official capacity, it is the Gremory family who governs this town."
"Your so-called "official capacities" are meaningless to me. The only thing I care about is you constantly turning my homeland into a flashing target. You even think about that?"
Sirzechs closed his eyes in an understanding fashion before continuing.
"...I know how you feel. But even so, that won't change our circumstances. What would you have me do if not host it here? This place is more than just a school in a town. Among the students of this academy, there's my sister, the legendary Red Dragon Emperor, the wielder of the "Holy-demonic" sword, the wielder of Durandal, and even the younger sister of the current Maou "Leviathan." Not to mention, it's the place where the Sekiryuutei and the ancient Cadre Kokabiel came to blows. Even the White Dragon Emperor appeared. And this isn't to mention the tragedy that befell this place ten years ago. All manner of powers have mixed and flowed through the streets of this town, and even through the very halls of this school... Events of this magnitude taking place at the same location, many of which followed in such quick succession… Something like that can't be excused as mere coincidence anymore. —No, it just isn't. The catalyst for all of this - it's undoubtedly you, the Welsh Dragon Emperor, Hyoudou Issei."
Issei visibly flinched at Sirzechs' declaration. He scowled briefly before lowering his head.
"...You think I don't know that..? I know that….. It's always been me…."
Issei's voice died off in a mutter as he frowned ashamedly to himself.
[Partner…. I'm…]
'Don't say it, Ddraig…. It's alright…. Just leave it be…'
[...But I...]
'I don't blame you….. I never will.'
[...It would be easier for me if you did..]
Rias came up beside Issei and gently placed a hand on his forearm. There was a look of shame on her face too.
"Ise…. The reason your home was attacked was…..ultimately, it was because of me, so.."
"Enough."
But Issei placed a hand atop her head without looking down at her.
"I don't wanna hear talk like that so just drop it."
Although Rias wanted to say something, her voice was caught in her throat and she simply put her forehead against his shoulder. Seeing this, Sirzechs couldn't help but smile under his breath. He explained it further as Issei silently detached himself from Rias.
"Well, in any case, this is going to be a site of some serious talks. There simply isn't a location any more fitting than this. Besides, in comparison to most places in the human world under the control of the three-powers, this is one of the most secure. With the modifications to the school's defense systems, and the forces of Fallen-Angels and Angels also overlooking it, this place will serve as a safe common ground for discussions of this manner. On top of that, with the Sekiryuutei who defeated Kokabiel in attendance, we shouldn't have much to worry about."
Issei raised a brow at Sirzechs' distinction.
"..? You want me to attend?"
"But of course. After all, with how closely associated you are with the Devils at this point, it's obvious we would want you present at our side. My sister and her group will be there as well. Besides, if this is your territory, it's only natural that you'd be present during something of this magnitude, wouldn't it? You could be there to protect it in the case of something disastrous happening, although it's unlikely."
Suddenly, something triggered within Issei's memory. It was the flashing images of the horrific day that was "Kuoh Disaster" once again bombarding him after being quiet for so long a while.
《They're still out there.》
….
….
"..I'll go."
When Issei lifted his head again, Sirzechs witnessed the hatred burning wildly in his eyes.
"—I'll be there. No matter what."
The hatred contained deep within the Boy's eyes reminded Sirzechs of his tragic roots. It was the same unyielding rage that Issei looked at Sirzechs with the first time the two met. No, this was surely worse. Over time, despite his visible change in demeanor, the Boy's hatred has only gotten worse. It hasn't disappeared, nor has it weakened. It has only grown stronger, just like him. And if the Boy's rampage against Kokabiel is any indication of his power, and these eyes were merely an indication of his hatred….then God only knows what sort of wrath the full culmination of his decade of festering rage will bring about.
—In truth, it made Sirzechs almost regretful that Issei even existed, if only just for a moment.
"Well…. Anyhow, with all of that being said, we seem to have arrived in the human world a bit later than suspected. It's already evening here, isn't it? Would you happen to know of any hotels that are open at this time of night?"
Issei raised a curious brow at the Devil-king.
"What, the great "Maou-sama" didn't make any reservations anywhere before coming here?"
Sirzechs rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly and smiled, but Grayfia was scowling angrily at him.
"Hehe, well… Originally, Grayfia was meant to set reservations for us to stay in this town, but considering that she was busy handling all of the preparations with the other sides in order to conduct a meeting between us, I offered her to let me handle it and…."
"He forgot."
"Ehehe.."
Rias sighed at her brother's lack of responsibility and covered her face.
"Ise, I assure you, he is a great leader, he really is, but….. Ugh… Let me handle this."
Issei simply rolled his eyes at the unimpressive display and decided to leave it to Rias to help her brother.
"A-Ano, Ise-san.."
From the sofa beside Issei, Asia spoke up hesitantly and beckoned him. When he got closer, she motioned for him to come even closer, bringing his ear close enough to hear Asia's whisper.
"...W...What if we let him stay with us?"
For a moment, Issei's world stopped.
.
.
He imagined it. The idea of Sirzechs Lucifer, the political target behind the attack on his homeland ten years ago, the attack which killed his parents, stepping into his home. Their home.
It's true that the reason "they" attacked his town was to assassinate Rias, and even her father, but the only reason she was even a target was because of her relation to her brother. It was the "Devil-king's brat sibling," the one that he cherished so dearly, that they were after. Because they wanted to hurt him. They wanted to send a message to him.
They did it because of him.
….
….
Even so, would that truly put him at fault for their sins?
….
….
"Haah…"
Issei sighed, but he turned his head away and said it quietly.
"Asia… I'm sorry, but…. Just leave it be…"
After that, Asia kept her mouth shut and didn't bring it up. Issei looked over at Rias, who was assisting Grayfia and her brother at finding a place to stay, then he turned his face to the floor.
'Kaa-san, Tou-san… Please forgive your foolish son. But right now, something like that is just…'
His eyes then caught onto the cross hanging from his neck and he remembered the image of Marie praying over him as he slept, as if praying on his behalf.
("..For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was stranger, and you invited me into your home...")
Issei simply shut his eyes and sighed deeply to himself.
—In the end, it was decided that Sirzechs would stay in Rias's house that she purchased from Issei's neighbors, since she hardly uses it herself. Meanwhile, Raynare's former comrades were allowed to stay elsewhere temporarily for the time being. Issei couldn't help staring out of the windows of his own home in deep contemplation, looking over at Rias's house, where the Devil-king lay.
Part 3
The next day.
"Too slow, Knight!"
BAM!
Kiba was sent rolling along the ground again after being kicked by Issei.
"You're able to keep track of my moves with your eyes at this point, but how much does that mean if you can't react? Stop trying to rely on just your speed to dodge!"
The two of them were training, as had become their routine during most days of the week.
—That's right. Ever since the Kokabiel incident came to a close and everything settled down, Issei has been training everyone in the ORC on different days of the week, with the exception of Kiba and Raynare, who he trained daily.
Originally, it was only Kiba who requested training from Issei. He surprised Issei out of nowhere by kneeling in front of him chivalry style and asking to be his pupil. At first, Issei was hesitant since he didn't consider himself the "sensei" type. However, in a surprising act of consideration, Issei offered (ordered) the rest of ORC to train with him as well, each member on a different day of the week, and at the end of the week, the group altogether. And yes, this even includes Asia, who Issei believes needs to work on her stamina regarding the "Twilight Healing," in the case of an emergency.
In other words, for five days of the week, he works with each member individually in the morning (+Raynare and Kiba in the evening), and on the last two days of the week, he works with everyone together (+Raynare and Kiba some more.)
So while Kiba is currently getting his "shit rocked," as Raynare would describe it, Raynare herself is drinking some water and taking a break. Asia is also healing her wounds.
"Ow!"
Raynare flinched in pain while Asia was healing her.
"I-I'm sorry! Are you alright?"
"Yeah, I'm okay… Geez.."
But Raynare was confused. She doesn't remember her back taking too much damage and yet she felt such a sharp, sudden pain stab into her shoulder blades briefly, before quickly disappearing. Whatever it was, she ignored it for now. It wasn't anything that Asia's Sacred Gear couldn't heal.
As Raynare's treatment continued, Kiba continued to be sent here and there by Issei's punches and kicks.
"Ugh..!"
Kiba slid across the forest clearing and reset himself after a bit of struggle. At this point, he and Issei had been training for an hour and Kiba was already near exhausted. You wouldn't think that as much for training at all, but Issei wasn't the type to waste time. There was a lot of ground he could cover in only an hour. The downside for whoever he was training with was that they would also "cover a lot of ground" in the most literal sense, using their bodies. In truth, they also had much less time to train today in general because Rias had something planned for them as a group.
As a result, Kiba wasn't allowed to have any time to rest, unlike the usual 30 second breathers he's given on regular days. Issei took another martial arts stance and waited for Kiba. When Kiba was ready, he stabbed his holy-demonic blade into the ground and spawned a volley of swords beneath Issei's feet. Issei avoided the blades by simply doing the splits and holding himself up in the small spaces between the swords. Hoping that this was a vulnerable position for Issei, Kiba flew towards Issei at full speed, aiming to pierce Issei in the chest. Of course he was coming at Issei with the intent to kill, as Issei instructed. Otherwise, he'd have no chance in hell of landing a single attack.
Unfortunately for Kiba, Issei broke out of the prison of swords by making a slight hop and using his wings to spin in midair, easily breaking all of the surrounding swords within 360 degrees of him. Despite this, Kiba continued his charge with no hesitation. Even if a plan fails, he can still fight. —"In the deadliest of encounters, it isn't a failed plan that'll kill you, it's that one wrong moment of hesitation," Issei told him.
Thus, Kiba didn't hesitate, even if he messed up, he needed to learn how to adapt. Despite everything, this did put a smile on Issei's face. However, Kiba's efforts were still futile, as Issei avoided all of his subsequent attacks with ease. He also countered with a straight hook at Kiba's pretty face.
But this time, Issei noticed something interesting. Even though he was aiming at the Knight's nose, he missed it by a small margin. In fact, his whole fist didn't land on Kiba's face, more like 75% of it. And it was because Kiba reacted to his punch just before he threw it. It was still a direct hit that sent Kiba flying, but for a moment, Issei smirked.
He almost missed.
"Ugh!"
As Kiba lay flat on his back, Issei started clapping.
"That's what I'm talkin' about. I told you, didn't I? If your speed is unreliable, then use your head. Try to predict my moves and dodge "prematurely." In real battle, this won't always be a reliable solution because of things like "feints," I'm sure a swordsman like you understands that, but this is still one method of evasion to use until you fully catch up to my speed."
As Kiba groaned and painfully brought himself up again, Issei smirked to himself.
'Just a bit more and he'll soon be used to my base speed. After that, I'll get him used to 5 boosts, and then Balance Breaker. We're working at a much faster pace than everyone else, but that's alright. He's the "Knight" who specializes in haste after all. He can handle it. I'll turn him into a proper "speed demon"…'
While leaning on his sword for support, Kiba complained.
"I wish you wouldn't hit so hard… I'm just a Knight after all.."
"Too bad, suck it up. I'm not the type to baby anybody. I'll hold back enough to keep you from dying and that's it, so be thankful for that. Besides, ain't no way in hell that I'm gonna train you for speed and not build up your durability at the same time. You're a Devil so your body will get stronger the more I beat into it. As a Knight, you have a naturally shitty defense, that's your primary weak point. But to me, that's a bullshit excuse that only deadbeats who neglect training would use. You're not gonna train under me and be a "one-shot." I'll turn you into a punching bag if it means making you durable. Just watch, I'll make you the "Iron Knight" of the underworld."
"Hah, ha… Is that why you keep breaking my legs at every training session?"
"That's right. Your legs are obviously the best target to aim for against an opponent like you. And what have I told you to do if an enemy takes out your legs?"
"Fly; use my wings instead of my legs... Which is why we've also been doing flying speed training on the weekends, right?"
"Right. As a Devil, you have that option available to you in the case of losing your legs for mobility. Difference is that using your wings also uses up your demonic power, which can bleed your stamina quicker, hence why it's a last resort for emergencies. But in the case that it does happen, your wings need to be as fast, if not faster than your legs, in terms of mobility. That's why we train them."
"Understood…. Although I hate whenever I have to resort to using my wings. Flying and attacking you while my broken legs dangle below me…. Fighting with that kind of damage, it isn't a very nice image."
For some reason, Issei hummed and scratched the scars on his face and neck sarcastically.
"Hmmmm~ yeah, that must suck for you, pretty boy..."
Kiba sweatdropped.
'...Ueh, somehow I feel like I should apologize..'
Issei quickly shook it off and got back on topic.
"Anyway, do you remember what your current goal for our training is?"
"Right now? It's to catch up to your base speed, correct?"
"Yeah. And after that, we'll go to five boosts and onward. We'll gradually up the speed tiers until you can match me blow for blow and reliably dodge serious attacks. Ideally, I'd actually prefer to skip boosted speed and go straight to base Scale Mail, but I don't think it's a good idea just yet. The best I can do is brute force you through boosted speed as quickly as possible by focusing solely on speed once we reach that level, then refocus on speed and durability again once we're in Scale Mail territory. With that, we'll get you on a steady pace towards becoming my equal."
"Ahaha, I think that's probably impossible, Ise-kun."
"We'll see about that."
Kiba's face got serious.
"How long do you think I have until I catch up to your base speed?"
"My estimate? You'll have it down by next week."
"..?! Do you… Do you really think I'll have it down by then?"
"No doubt. You might not have realized it, but the pace of your growth is improving the more that we train. You won't remain trapped in low-level hell for much longer, and you won't be as weak as the regular old "high-class" Devil when I'm done with you, not by a long shot. Hell, your growth is set at a far quicker pace than pretty much anybody else in our group, including Raynare, who is still levels above you."
"...Well, from what I've seen, Raynare-san is quite fast, but how does she compare to you? Is she at five boost levels already?"
"Raynare? She's past that. I'm gonna train her in Scale Mail starting next week."
"..?! She's already at that level? Amazing.."
"Damn right. Her durability and strength still need some work, but in terms of speed and endurance, she's leagues above all of you. If there's anything she can do, it's running around dodging and attacking for hours on end. She could probably run circles around you without breaking a sweat."
"Wow…. Well, you certainly sound proud of her, Ise-kun."
"I—"
Issei folded his arms curiously and made a contemplative expression.
"Huh…. I guess I do.. Well, she is kind of like my "star pupil" after all, so...I suppose that makes sense. Hmm."
For some reason, Issei started chuckling, causing Kiba to raise a brow.
"What is it, Ise-kun?"
"Huh? Oh, uh, nothing. It's just.."
—Issei's change in expression made Kiba's eyes widen in surprise. For once, Issei was wearing an impossible, amused grin befitting of a goofy 16 year old.
"Hehe, I just couldn't help remembering my old shishou. Old man was always goin' on about me bein' his "star pupil" and all. I'm sure he never woulda' thought of me havin' a star pupil of my own, considerin' my attitude back in the day. He'd probably blow his lid if he found out about it now, talkin' about "start a dojo, you blockhead!" Hehe, what a guy."
Issei's smile then dimmed into a much more somber, but also loving expression, which also left Kiba speechless. Even so, seeing it made Kiba smile warmly too.
'So even Ise-kun can make faces like that too, huh..'
At the sidelines, Asia also wore a similarly proud and bright smile while sitting beside Raynare.
"Ehehe, did you hear that, Raynare-san? Like I said before, everyone thinks you're amazing after all."
But when she turned to Raynare, she noticed that Raynare's back was facing her and Raynare was holding her knees with her head down in between them.
"Raynare-san..?"
"Huh? Oh, yeah. Right. Thanks, Asia."
She went quiet after that, leaving Asia wondering what was up with her behavior.
Raynare kept her head down between her knees, lifting it only to glance over her folded arms, at Issei's direction. For whatever reason, she felt confused and averted her gaze quickly after, as if she couldn't stand looking at him for very long.
"Ugh… What is going on with me lately..?"
A few more minutes passed. In time, Rias and the rest of her peerage appeared in the forest.
"Still hard at work, I see. Ise, Yuuto."
When Issei noticed Rias's group, he and Kiba ceased their training, much to Kiba's delight.
"Actually, we're callin' it quits for now, since we were waiting for you."
"Ara, how considerate. Well, actually, since it's still morning, we're in no rush to commence Raynare's ritual. I was actually thinking that maybe we could fit in a spar or two."
"A spar?"
"Yes, between my group and you. You know, like one of those mock battles that we did before, last weekend."
"Oh, that? You wanna do another one of those? I already told you that you're probably gonna need to improve individually before we can do those regularly. You're all just too slow for me as it is."
"Well, that might be true, but I don't think we can improve on our teamwork if we don't attempt to confront an opponent who can disrupt that synergy with overwhelming power."
"Ugh.. I still don't think it's a good idea, but if you insist on getting your asses handed to ya, I guess it's fine. No skin off my back."
Kiba, due to exhaustion, appeared to lose his spirit to the point of almost falling on his sword's hilt for support.
"Uu.. Buchou, how could you..?"
Despite how she was, Rias was quite unforgiving when it came to training.
—And so, the Gremory team, including the already worn out Kiba, spread out and surrounded Issei, ready to start a mock battle.
"Well, this should be fun."
Raynare sat back and smiled, while Asia only hoped that Issei didn't hurt them all too much.
"Alright, amateurs. Come and get it."
The battle began.
They all attacked at once, but their attacks were immediately ineffective. Akeno sent a full powered blast of thunder at Issei's unprotected back, the first attack to make direct contact.
BBZZZZZTZZZZZZ!
Issei's body took the full brunt of the attack. However, it hardly affected him, if at all. Immediately after tanking it, he was zooming towards Akeno and ready to take her down in one hit. Akeno dodged his (intentionally) slow punch by a hair's length, causing Issei's fist to destroy the ground it landed in. Just as he planned, Issei took advantage of the close proximity to mentally prod his opponent in that moment.
"I left my back open and it still wasn't enough for you. Your thunder strikes are just too weak."
When he glared at Akeno from over his bicep, she flinched.
"If only you used your true powers, maybe you would've done something."
—An enraged expression flashed over Akeno's face for a brief moment, but it didn't last long. Issei used that momentary, angered state to his advantage and struck Akeno's chest with a flattened palm, causing her to fly away from him. And as if the strength was suddenly ripped from her body, she was stuck lying on the ground after that happened.
Issei's gaze quickly locked onto Koneko next, who was rapidly approaching him from the right. Issei made a slow outward swing that Koneko easily dodged by ducking. She followed up with a punch to Issei's right hip, causing him to slide slightly thanks to the impact. But it wasn't enough, because Issei swung again at Koneko, seemingly unaffected. Koneko dodged again, causing a similar situation with Akeno's duel where Issei's fist was caught in the ground. Koneko used the opportunity to try and kick upwards at Issei's face which was facing the ground, but Issei caught her leg with ease. Koneko then used her other leg to jump and tried to bring it down on the back of his neck, but Issei quickly retracted his other arm from the dirt and stopped Koneko's leg right before it came down. With this, Issei had a grip on both of Koneko's legs, rendering her defenseless (in her own eyes.)
"You still have other limbs, don't you?"
Despite Issei's comment, he didn't give Koneko any time to try anything again. Without hesitation, Issei used his iron grip on Koneko's legs to downward swing her like an axe - head first into the ground.
DONNN!
After Koneko was Kiba, who came straight at Issei with his holy-demonic sword, just like in training. When Kiba swung at Issei, Issei caught Kiba's blade in between his fingers, but Kiba spawned another sword with his spare hand to swing at Issei from the opposite side. The same result, Issei caught it just as easily.
"I'm not done yet!"
Suddenly, Kiba spawned a sword from in front of his jaws and caught the handle in his teeth, using his mouth to swing the sword.
"Hoh?"
For a moment, Issei was impressed. However..
DIN!
He couldn't help but think 'two can play at that game.'
"..?!"
When Kiba noticed that Issei caught the tip of the blade in his mouth, it was already too late. Kiba received a powerful kick to his stomach, knocking the air completely out of his body.
BAM!
Once Kiba's body curled over slightly, Issei quickly destroyed Kiba's swords in between his hands by crossing them. He then followed up by hitting both sides of Kiba's neck, knocking out any bit of oxygen that lingered in Kiba's airway, causing him to lose consciousness immediately. Had there been any more pressure in Issei's strike, Kiba's neck would have been snapped like a twig.
Last but not least, that left the King, Rias. Issei charged the princess without warning, which she was prepared for. In an attempt to prevent any frontal assaults, Rias fired off a great amount of her power of destruction in front of her, causing Issei to change his angle of attack. He used his speed to quickly appear behind her, expecting it to already be over with this. However, he was surprised to see that Rias actually kept one of her hands behind her back, as if preemptively readied for Issei to appear there.
DON!
Unfortunately for her, Issei avoided the attack by jumping into the air above Rias. In anticipation of this, Rias broke her attacks and quickly aimed up at the seemingly defenseless Issei. There was a miscalculation. Rias had forgotten something.
Foom!
Issei didn't need his Balance Breaker to use his wings.
And in an instant, Issei pushed himself out of the way using those summoned dragon wings.
"...?!"
Just like that, Issei was now below Rias, leaving her abdomen completely open.
"Checkmate."
BAM!
Issei punched Rias in the abdomen, his fist digging into the space between her ribcage. The force of the punch caused her to cough up a wad of blood and took all the strength in her body away. She fell to her knees while clutching her stomach, defeated.
With that, the Gremory group was easily beaten.
"Huh… Maybe I should've held back a bit?"
Issei wondered while looking at the ORC members all strewn about the clearing. When he looked over to where Raynare and Asia were, Asia was covering her eyes, but Raynare was shaking her head. She and Issei shared the same sentiment.
" "Nah." "
Part 4
"I can still feel the imprint of Ise's fist on my stomach… I'd always hoped for a more romantic "mark" from the man I love, but..."
Rias rubbed her belly uncomfortably, despite the fact that the pain was no longer present thanks to Asia's healing. The ORC had returned to the clubroom after concluding their training that morning.
"Oh, is that the first time you've ever had a real "boo-boo," princess? Hmph, what a baby. Get over it."
Despite what one might believe, this snide remark came from Raynare, not Issei. As a result, tensions between the two girls briefly rose again.
"Excuse me? I'll have you know that I'm quite accustomed to physical pain. I've trained plenty enough in my life to be properly tolerant of it. I'm not just a talented prodigy, you know."
"What I meant by that was that you were spoiled, never said you were talented, you arrogant brat."
As has become the usual, Raynare and Rias began to glare at each other angrily. Issei groaned in irritation.
"Will you two just cut the shit already? This is quite literally the worst time to be bickering with each other."
The two were still clearly aggravated with each other, but they turned their scowls away in accordance with Issei's demands.
"Yes, well, I'll just go ahead and ignore Raynare's childish outbursts for now, for Ise's sake of course. But just to let you know, I won't accept behavior like that once I'm your master."
"Whatever. Let's just get this over with."
Issei gave a tired, nonverbal response. If this was how it was now, he can't imagine how it's going to be when the ritual is over.
What ritual, you ask? Well, the question was answered once Rias walked behind her desk to retrieve a certain item. A burgundy colored, velvet pouch with the Gremory insignia on its surface.
"Last chance. You sure you wanna do this?"
Issei asked Raynare in place of Rias. Raynare nodded firmly.
"..Yeah, I'm sure."
With that confirmation, Rias stepped over from her desk and to Raynare.
"Are you ready? If you are, stand over there."
Raynare went over to an open space in the room and Rias followed. Rias then pulled something out from the pouch. A chess piece, a pawn to be precise.
"Oh?"
For whatever reason, Rias looked at one of the pawns with great intrigue. Something about that specific pawn appeared slightly different than the others, and it was also pulsing with a dim glow.
"What is it?"
Instead of answering Raynare's question, Rias earned a smile of pride.
"Nothing."
Finally, Rias lifted the pawn piece and gently pushed it into Raynare's chest, where it was silently absorbed. Rias then extended her arms outward and began chanting, causing a Gremory crested magic-circle to appear below Raynare's feet.
"Fallen-Angel— Raynare— I command thee, in the name of Rias Gremory, dedicate your heart to me and become my servant; return thy soul to this world as a Devil!"
The blinding light of the magic circle briefly filled the room. When it died down, Raynare was standing there, same as before. Except…
Foom..
There was a pair of Devil wings behind her.
"Wings… I have wings again.."
As Raynare muttered to herself, the rest of the Gremory peerage clapped in a congratulatory manner.
"Congratulations on becoming a Devil, Raynare. You are now officially a part of the Gremory family."
"...Right, thanks."
"Oh, come now, can't you at least have a bit more of an enthusiastic response than that? You just gained a brand new pair of wings. You can fly again."
"..Yeah, well, this wasn't exactly what I had in mind for a new pair.."
"Ugh, must you Fallen-Angels always be so greedy?"
"This coming from the Devil."
"Ara, Raynare. Don't forget, you're a Devil now too."
Even now, the two were butting heads. Asia walked up to Raynare with a concerned face.
"Raynare-san… Are you sure you don't want me to become a Devil alongside you? I… I don't want you to become a Devil just for my sake if I can't repay you… The least I could do is follow you."
"No, Asia. It's alright. I don't want you to have to give up your humanity just because you feel indebted to me for this. Asia should just stay the way she is. You're perfect this way. Besides, if you became a Devil, then that would just inhibit your ability to pray and worship."
"B-But, if it's for Raynare-san, then.."
Raynare's expression softened and she couldn't help but feel compelled to bring Asia into her embrace.
"Oh, Asia. Thank you for being so thoughtful of me.. You don't know how much I appreciate it."
"Raynare-san.."
The two hugged each other lovingly, creating a warm atmosphere in the clubroom. While this was happening, Rias nudged Issei in his side.
"They're so lovey-dovey lately, at this rate, there might not be enough room left for you, Ise."
Issei didn't mind though. If the two of them got along, that was obviously for the best. Besides, with how inseparable they've become, he was more than used to it at this point.
"But I'd say that works for us, doesn't it? If that's the case, we can have all the alone time we want.."
Just as Rias puckered her lips at him, Issei flicked her forehead away and scoffed.
"Uh-huh, in your dreams, Gremory."
"Ow… Yes, in my dreams… As always… Haah.."
After a sad sigh, Rias readjusted her attitude and whispered to Issei about something more serious while the rest of the club members socialized.
"By the way, Ise. Did you notice something...peculiar when I retrieved those Evil pieces from my bag?"
"What, like how they were glowing? Isn't that normal?"
"No, not that. It's the piece that I used. It wasn't a regular piece... That was a mutation piece."
"And….those are better than the regular ones, right?"
"Unbelievably so. Truth be told, the regular ones can't compare. Unlike the regular ones, the mutation pieces have a tendency to… well, let's just say that their nature is ambiguous. They can usually make up for multiple pieces worth of a set, and those who are reincarnated using mutation pieces tend to possess a much greater potential for growth. Historically, mutation pieces have been the best option for reincarnating more powerful creatures, those with a unique nature, or those who possess a special-type Sacred Gear. In fact, when I had originally offered you to become a part of my peerage, I was planning to use all of my pawn pieces, which included a single mutation piece. Of course, that was before I realized the full scope of your power, but… Well, that's embarrassing for me to remember so let's just forget about that... Anyway, this is a big deal. It could mean that Raynare will have a lot of potential in the future."
Issei narrowed his eyes suspiciously, as if feeling intrigued by this information. For some reason, he had an itching feeling that gave him a hint of what was going on. As a result, he focused his dragonic eye on Raynare specifically. When he observed her closely, he noticed a latent mixture of aura surrounding her body. That aura was mainly consistent with that of a Fallen-Angel, and underneath the surface, there was just the slightest inclination of…..
"..?!"
"What's wrong, Ise?"
"Rias… Do you remember when I started doing that "experiment" with Raynare a couple weeks ago?"
Rias pouted when Ise mentioned it.
"You mean that intimate little routine where the two of you stand in front of each other, close your eyes, and hold hands for a few minutes? How could I forget?"
"Did you see what was happening at that time?"
"..No, I looked away. In fact, I tried my best not to look since it didn't involve me and all it would do is distract me from training with everyone else.. But I could still hear what was happening. You were transferring your power to her so that she could use it during sparring, right?"
"No, it was more than that… That wasn't just some regular old "gifting" process. I was trying to do something specific, something I've been doing for a long time, but have never attempted on a sentient creature with its own nature or source of power, due to the risk of rejection by the host."
"And that is..?"
"Transfer of latent power. In other words, not giving a temporary boost in strength that doubles someone's power, but rather something that gradually transfers increments of my latent aura from one creature to another in the hopes that they may adapt to it and might positively react to their nature somehow."
To say that Rias was shocked was an understatement.
"What? Something like that, Ise…. Is that even possible?"
Issei continued eyeing Raynare with his dragonic pupil, watching the miniscule, yet just barely noticeable fluctuations in Raynare's aura. Fluctuations...which almost resembled his own during his childhood.
A smirk threatened to form on Issei's face before he quickly extinguished it.
"..Too early to tell, I'd say.."
"I see.."
But for Rias, seeing the intensity in Issei's eyes solely focused on Raynare made her feel all types of uncomfortable. As a result, she returned the atmosphere to its regular temperament.
"Alright then, everyone! Now that we've completed the ritual, let's celebrate, shall we? Akeno!"
"Yes, Buchou."
Similar to the time that Issei, Asia, and Raynare first joined the club, Akeno brought out a cart with cake and drinks.
"Everyone, let's give a warm welcome to the newest member of our family! Cheers!"
" " " "Cheers!" " " "
Raynare groaned in a similar manner to Issei.
"Ugh.. Asia is family enough for me, but you people..?"
Issei chuckled amusedly and picked up a drink.
"Meh. You get used to it."
Part 5
The next day, the group was at the pool. Apparently, this was the reason they had dragged Issei to go swimsuit shopping. According to Rias, in exchange for cleaning the pool, which was usually the student council's responsibility, the Gremory group was allowed to use it afterward. This wasn't something Issei particularly cared for, but considering that Asia did, you know how things go. To be fair, it had been quite a while since he had been at any pool or beach of some sort. The last time he went was with his family back in Nagoya. Yes, it was with his family and Marie…..
..In any case, he had no reason to refuse Asia's request to have an experience like this, especially after the promise he and Raynare made about taking her everywhere together. At the end of the day, it wasn't a big deal.
"Ise-kun."
While the two men were changing, Kiba randomly called out to Issei, bringing him out of his deep reminiscence.
"Hm? What's up?"
"I wanted to tell you something."
For some reason, Kiba appeared quite serious, as if he was trying to say something from the heart.
"What is it?"
"...I wanted to thank you, Ise-kun."
"..What for?"
"For everything… Not only did you help me when I was stumbling down the path of revenge, but you're also training me and allowing me to become stronger for the sake of my friends… You… Without your help, Ise-kun, I…. I don't know what would've happened to us. What would've happened to me…. In truth, the reason I stand here today, the only reason I can still live and smile alongside the only family I have left— the only reason I could reconcile with my past… it's all because of you, Ise-kun..."
Without turning away from his locker, Issei responded quietly.
"It wasn't... That last part you did yourself.."
"On the contrary, Ise-kun. Without you, I wouldn't even have had that chance, I would've just died a meaningless death somewhere along the way. I wouldn't have had that encounter with my past comrades. It was because of you in the first place that I could even make it to that point. I wouldn't have made it to this point either... And for that, Ise-kun, I am eternally grateful to you."
Still without turning around, Issei nodded his head.
"..Don't mention it."
Issei continued changing wordlessly, with Kiba still standing somewhere behind him. Issei wore a short sleeve rash guard along with his trunks. But just as Issei finished changing his clothes, Kiba said something which gave him pause.
"...But unlike me, you haven't reconciled with your past, have you, Ise-kun?"
Issei froze in place. It was quiet in the men's locker room for a good while, so much so that you could even hear the lockers opening and shutting from the women's side. Finally, it was Issei who broke the silence.
"...And what of it?"
"..Preferably, I'd like for Ise-kun to be able to have the same peace of mind that I've found, as well as peace of heart."
"...Yeah, well, we aren't all so lucky as to have our loved ones come out of thin air to comfort us, are we, boy?"
That response seemed like less of a response to Kiba, and more of a response to Issei himself...
The silence returned with a vengeance, much heavier than before. At this point, even the world outside of the locker room must've seemed still.
...Somewhere underneath his silent, unmoving exterior, Issei must've felt a rising sense of guilt. And for a moment, an apology was ready to form at his lips. But before his jaws could move, his legs did, and he began to walk out of the locker room. He was only stopped at the exit by Kiba's voice once again.
"Ise-kun… I'm your friend…. Let me help, as you helped me…."
The silence this time was ever so brief, and Issei gave his last response as he opened the door.
"...You can't help me, Kiba... There isn't anyone in this world who can…. Certainly not someone as weak as you."
As he muttered the last part to himself, Issei stepped out without a word more, leaving Kiba alone in the silent locker room.
—After leaving the locker room, Issei joined everyone else beside the pool. Rias was already waiting for him to pass judgment on her swimsuit, which was a purple slingshot bikini that displayed a lot of skin.
"Oh, Ise, there you are. How do I look? I was originally planning to go with a more modest swimsuit, but after you refused to look at the photos I sent you, I went for a bolder design. Like what you see?"
Considering that his mind was still partly elsewhere, Issei gave an offhanded, inoffensive review.
"Yeah, looks nice.."
As Rias puffed her cheeks in frustration, Asia came up beside Issei after an instigative nudge from Raynare.
"Um, Ise-san? H-How does mine look? Is my swimsuit a-alright?"
For Asia, Issei's attention was brought back fully. She was wearing a frilly, pink, two-piece bikini. It was a similar style to what someone like Maki would choose. In fact, Issei was certain that he's seen her wear something akin to it. Issei smiled.
"Yeah, it's great, Asia. You look beautiful, as always."
Of course, hearing this turned Asia's face red like a tomato from embarrassment, meanwhile Rias's face got red from anger in the background. On the other hand, Raynare had a proud look. Raynare herself was wearing a fairly basic but fitting dark-blue bikini with a glossy texture. Despite not requesting it on her own, Issei still provided Raynare with some feedback on her swimsuit as well.
"Thought you would've gone with something flashier."
"Huh? O-Oh. Well… Just because I'm a Fallen-Angel doesn't always mean I'll go with something skimpy. I think I'd like to wear something normal too, at least every once in a while…"
"I'm not judging, just surprised. It still looks good on you."
Raynare rubbed her neck awkwardly and looked away.
"Oh… Thanks, I guess..?"
"See? I told you so, Raynare-san! You look amazing so please don't feel insecure about yourself!"
"Y-Yeah, I get it, Asia. T-Thanks. Just, please lower your voice.. The others will hear you.."
Issei glanced around to look at the others, seeing Koneko in a school swimsuit and Akeno in a black & yellow striped swimsuit. Seeing Koneko in a school swimsuit let Issei understand why Koneko was the only one on the shopping trip who didn't purchase anything resembling clothing. Interestingly, Akeno appeared to avoid Issei's gaze as much as possible. Seems they weren't very close yet, despite her generally positive shift in attitude towards him.
Rias came up beside Issei and spoke in a quiet voice.
"Ise, can I ask something of you?"
"What is it?"
"I'd like a favor."
Taking Rias's personality into consideration, Issei narrowed his eyes suspiciously.
"..What kind of favor?"
Part 6
"Good, same pace. One-two. One-two."
"You can do it, Koneko-san!"
Surprisingly, the favor that Rias had asked for was fairly innocuous. That being swimming practice for Koneko.
("Ise. I wanted to ask if you could give Koneko some swimming lessons. You see, she isn't particularly fond of swimming, and by that, I mean that she can't really swim at all. At this point in her life, it would be a bit of an embarrassment for my group if she wasn't able to swim even now. And considering your proficiency in the water, I couldn't ask for a better tutor here.")
("I've never mentioned being particularly good at swimming, as far as I can remember.")
("You didn't need to. I saw enough of your memories to know that you're skilled at it. Likely thanks to the influence of that young girl who shares your godmother's name.")
("I didn't think that "swimming practice at school with my friends when I was a kid" would be enough to qualify as a "crucial" memory for you to see it. How much of my memory did you see after all?")
("Like I said before, only important memories. "Anything that made you who you are." At first, I was also confused as to why I was witnessing a random swimming contest between you and your friends at some waterpark, but that question was answered when I saw who the contestants were…")
("What do you mean by that?")
("Well… Let's just say that your family and friends weren't the only ones there with you.")
("Oh, right…")
While absentmindedly directing the foot paddling Koneko, Issei looked down at the cross hanging down his chest and sighed.
'So even something like that was deemed an "important memory" by my subconscious, huh? And it's all thanks to you… Even though it was just a stupid race…'
"Ise-senpai."
Koneko's shy voice snapped Issei out of his thoughts.
"I'm sorry for making you help me with this.."
"It's okay. It's no big deal to me. Besides, Rias is right. I'm probably the best swimmer here, so it's obvious to ask me. Thanks to my friend…."
Uncharacteristically, Issei smiled reassuringly.
"Anyway, it's my duty as a senpai to support my kouhai whenever I can, so don't worry about it."
Koneko didn't respond after that, she just kept quiet. When the two finally reached the other end of the pool again, Koneko's swimming lesson was over.
"Ise, I know that you're technically wearing proper swimming attire, but it isn't like you're going surfing anywhere. Wouldn't you rather feel the sun on your bare skin instead of through a wet fabric?"
"That just sounds like you just want me to take my shirt off, you horny bat."
"Oh, please, Ise. Even I'm not so depraved as to request something silly like that. I'm just looking out for you."
"Uh-huh…"
Nonetheless, Issei agreed that it wasn't really his style to wear a top in the pool and reluctantly removed his rash guard, not keen on the hungry eyes Rias gave him all the while doing it. He then gestured towards Asia.
"Come on, Asia. You said you wanted to go next, right? Let's go."
"H-Hai!"
Asia ran up next to him with a red face. Well, for her, it made sense. Rias then smiled at Issei "harmlessly" and held her hand out.
"Oh, I can hold onto your shirt for you, Ise."
"Ha! Yeah, right. In your dreams, Gremory. Raynare, you got this for me?"
"Yeah, no problem."
After tossing his shirt to Raynare, Issei and Asia hopped into the pool to start her lessons. Meanwhile, Rias glared daggers at Raynare, who simply observed Asia's swimming with a self-satisfied face.
"..You just love it when things go perfectly your way, don't you, oh smug pawn of mine."
"I sure do, princess."
After Issei was finished giving swimming lessons to both girls, he sat down under one of the umbrellas on the poolside, in between Raynare and Asia. Asia soon fell asleep on the towel next to his, while Raynare just sat quietly beside him. Although the two sat in a fairly comfortable silence, Issei has been feeling the urge to talk to her more often lately. Unbeknownst to him, that was a mutual sentiment.
"Hey."
"Yeah?"
"Your swimsuit does look good on you."
Due to the unexpected compliment, Raynare curled away a bit in surprise.
"W-What? S-Saying that so suddenly, what's up with that?"
"No, sorry, I just…. Well, Asia said earlier that you were feeling self-conscious for some reason, so…"
Raynare sighed and rubbed her forehead in embarrassment.
"Ugh… That's why I told her to keep her voice down. Geez… Listen, I'm… I'm not "insecure," okay? I'm just… I was just feeling a little embarrassed to be seen in a swimsuit, that's all. It's my first time wearing one after all…"
"Really..? That's kinda surprising considering the skimpy outfit you're always fighting in. Wouldn't expect you to get embarrassed by that. But I guess you wouldn't ever need a swimsuit if you had something like that on."
Raynare side-eyed Issei for his comments.
"..Thanks for the compliment…. Anyway, I was just feeling a little reluctant to wear one, that's all. I'm not...insecure, or anything like that... Although I wouldn't say I'm that confident in my body either."
Despite Raynare's denial, Issei could tell that she was indeed feeling "insecure" about herself in some way, just as Asia claimed. Her last comment might have been intended to run under her breath, but Issei has the best hearing in the group. Plus, even if she didn't say it, it was clear to tell just by her body language that she wasn't all that confident. This "holding my knees with my forearms" sitting position wasn't really the greatest indication of self-esteem that someone could communicate physically.
Seeing this, Issei felt compelled to act as he has been lately, that is, a bit more considerately.
"...Is it because of your scars?"
Raynare stayed silent, but her body became slightly tighter at the question. The "scars" that Issei referred to were obviously the nasty looking tear & burn marks that lingered on Raynare's back, sitting in the place where her wings used to be.
If it was anyone else, Raynare would've seen it as a boldly intrusive question that she wasn't obligated to answer. But because of the silent understanding the duo have developed with each other over time, she thought that there was no reason to hide anything from him at this point.
"...Yeah…"
"...Mm, well, sorry about that."
"No, it's okay. I'm over it...mostly. It's just a little thing really, in the grand scheme of things. It just...doesn't look nice is all. But honestly, it's no big deal.. It's my own problem."
"A problem that I caused."
"I told you that I forgave you, didn't I? It's fine. I'll get over this too. Besides...if anything, I caused it."
The two stopped talking for a while and Issei looked down at the sleeping Asia at his side, wondering just how she was so good at helping others heal emotionally. It wasn't a skill that he was naturally ordained with, unlike her, and unlike his partner from the past.. Perhaps it was related to their "virtuous" upbringing as sisters, but who can say really? If you ask him, he would assume that it's just the kind of person they both were.
..The kind of person that he, somewhere deep down, wishes he could also be….
"You know, at first, I actually wanted to go with something that would cover this up. But… of course, she somehow managed to convince me otherwise."
Raynare smiled at the slumbering Asia with a tinge of sadness in her eyes.
"Yeah, she's got that special thing about her, doesn't she? Just like someone I once knew…"
Issei finished his solemn statement while staring down at his cross longingly. Seeing this, Raynare became curious.
"You know…. You might've told Asia and Rias at this point, but I'm not sure that you've told me much about it yet. You know, about your past. I mean, I know that there was another church girl like Asia in your life before, and I know that's where you got that sword and that cross from, but…. I can't remember what Xenovia said her name was. I just remember that she was important to the church somehow and that everyone looked up to her or something. And you defeated that cult together, right?... But to me it seems like…. I don't know. It just seems like there's always something more with you that you're not saying. In a way, I guess you can say that you're "mysterious." Which is a pretty good trait for a guy to have, that is, if you're trying to get girls. But for you…. Well, nevermind. Maybe I shouldn't pry..."
"—Her name was Marie Bellerose."
Raynare was surprised to hear Issei's confirmation of the girl's name, but even so, she listened keenly.
"And she was….someone very important to me. We did defeat a cult together, that's true, but… In truth, there was so much more that we did together that mattered to me…. But at the time, I just didn't realize how much it all meant to me. I, who had grown up with the experience of losing my only family— my parents, had still somehow taken the person which I held dearest for granted…. It was like a bad joke. A joke that I played on myself. All because I was afraid of looking too attached…. But that person was more than just a partner. She was an inspiration to me. Although I never said it to her, I had always looked up to her in a way. Her level of kindness was the type that I just couldn't reach... Heh. And what's funny is that she called me "kind" all the time, even though I hated it… No, I didn't hate it. It just embarrassed me, because I was still a dumb little kid who thought it was weak to be told that I had a kind heart. I was too obsessed with being a "ruthless defender." But now….all that I ever want to be is whatever she thought of me. Whoever it was that she lov… she looked up to, I want to be him. It's the same with my parents. I keep hoping that I can one day be the son they could've said they were proud of… So you see, in the end, deep inside, I just keep on hoping to become an ideal that I can never be. That's all I am really. Just a man chasing a shadow, a version of myself that only exists within other people's eyes. Not me… Because all I am on the inside is…."
Issei trailed off, never finishing his statement. He delicately held Marie's cross in his palm and frowned with deep sorrow and a hint of shame.
"...Well, now, with this path that fate has set me on…. I don't know that I can ever be any of that."
"...Fate, huh? You say that, but it's really a choice, isn't it? Even with all of those things I did in my past, as much as I like to justify myself for it, it was all a choice in the end. I chose to do those things, and that's why I'm ashamed of them now. If I hadn't chosen it, what shame would I have? But it was a choice. And now, my choice is to be Asia's protector and her family…. There's always a choice."
Issei sighed deeply, as if understanding her words, but feeling that they simply didn't apply to the type of existence that he was. To the Sekiryuutei…
"Haah… Yeah, I guess you're right.."
Whilst thinking to himself, Issei remembered something.
"Oh yeah, by the way, I noticed that your friends didn't come along with us to the pool. Haven't seen them much lately, if at all. They've never come around to the club either. Are they just shut-ins now?"
Raynare sighed deeply at Issei's question.
"Haah…. Yeah, that…. Well, you can imagine that they're not particularly fond of their current situation. They lost their wings, they lost their right to go home, and now one of them is a Devil without their consent and they're both stuck living at a Devil's house….. To say that they've been having it rough lately is an understatement. They've just been manipulated left and right, and they have no purpose in life except sitting around in "enemy territory" as traitors with no home…. They have it just as bad as I did when I was sleeping in the church ruins, screaming at nothing all day."
"You sure about that? You had it pretty bad. At least they've got a place to sleep. Even if it is a Devil's house, she's hardly ever there. She practically lives with me. Plus, you're the only one they've gotta worry about visiting them. They don't have the threat of the Sekiryuutei finding them again and slaughtering them for their misdeeds, unlike you did."
"That may be true, but that was all the consequences of my own actions. I was just reaping what I had sowed. But this… They're not even really suffering for their own actions, they're suffering for mine. It's true that they allied with Kokabiel, but I was the one who manipulated them into joining me on this stupid, self-serving crusade into enemy territory just so I could get all of the glory of slaying the Sekiryuutei… In the end, they're here because of me, that's why I want to help them. But I'm still not sure of how to do it, even now. So far, all I've accomplished is getting them used to me showing up at Rias's house and saying hello. They usually don't say it back though. Hell, they usually don't say anything."
"Did you tell them that you became a Devil?"
"Yeah… I did it right after I was turned…"
"What'd they say?"
"At first? Nothing. They just opened their eyes a bit. But soon, it seemed like they weren't surprised anymore, like if they had come to expect that of me. I got the impression that they started to think of me as some weak-willed turncoat with zero loyalty… And then…. At some point, I got on my hands and knees in front of them and apologized. For everything… I told them that I would do whatever I could to make things right again, to make up for what I did… I promised that I would never betray or hurt them again, and asked if they could one day forgive me, and maybe even trust me…"
"Did they say anything to that, at least?"
"Mitlet did… She used that same magic she used before to talk, to yell at me. Even though she's the one who can't communicate properly, she was the one who did it. She must have poured her heart out at me… It's not worth mentioning to you what she said at this point, but needless to say, she let me have it. Meanwhile, I just sat there and took it, it's what I deserved… Kala didn't say anything, she just made a face that said she didn't understand anything anymore…. The whole ordeal made me feel like my heart was breaking in half. But at the very least, I'm glad I felt something. At least I know that I care enough to do something about it. It's all thanks to Asia... But when it was all said and done, I left after telling them that they didn't have to worry about being killed or hurt by anyone here, because they're no longer enemies. I also let them know that they could come to the house or to the club anytime. They didn't answer after that, so that's when I left."
"Sounds like it was tough."
"It was…"
"Well, good effort. If they decide to respond to your feelings, let them. If they don't, then there's nothing you can do. It's all up to them. Either way, what matters most is that you're trying."
"Heh, never expected to hear such encouraging words from you of all people…. But, thanks."
The two went quiet, leaving only the splashes of the pool to sound the silence between them. It wasn't until Issei got curious again that the conversation started up once more.
"You know… I still haven't heard your story yet, Raynare."
"My story?"
"Yeah, I told you a bit about mine, or, at least about the most important part of it.… And you already know about my parents. But you've never said anything about yourself to me. Except for maybe being that big shot's lackey."
"Oh… Well, that's…. I mean, even though it's technically a long one, there's not really much to tell…"
"I'd still like to hear it."
"Hmm… Okay then, where to start… Well, I guess I'll start from the beginning. I fell from heaven fifty years after I was initially created. By the time I fell, God must've already been long dead. In fact, if what Kokabiel-sa— Ahem, Kokabiel, said was accurate, and if my timeline is correct, God must've died only a year after my creation. Which means I might've been a part of the last rally of Angels ever created… I was made for the war, but ultimately, I never got to see it. Anyway, I fell fifty years after that. I fell after seeing Azazel-sa… Azazel, for the first time. I think it was at a time that there were little scuffles between Angels and Fallen-Angels, despite the ceasefire… I must've been accompanying Gabriel-sama somewhere. When she and Azazel had a non-hostile chat about the circumstances and agreed to back off amicably, that's when I thought that… that was when I started, um, "lusting" for him, I guess… I fell because of obvious reasons. Needless to say, Angels aren't supposed to "hunger" so fervently. But unfortunately for me, when I fell, I didn't know where I'd end up. Angels don't really have the luxury of picking where they want to fall to. So when I fell, I landed in an unknown country in Europe."
"Europe, huh? Where in Europe? Do you know now?"
"Yeah, it must've been Germany. I was stuck there for about a hundred years, doing whatever to survive, because even more unfortunate than not picking where I landed, I didn't know how to get to the underworld, to where Grigori was. I was alone and lost for a long time. At times, I didn't even feel like a Fallen-Angel, since all I did was go from heretic cult to heretic cult being worshipped and using them for food and places to stay or getting off on being a false idol. On top of that, I stole like some lowly thief sometimes just to get by. Can you believe that? A Fallen-Angel intimidating people into giving her stuff. Sounds like a bad joke. I wonder if that's where I got all that ego from? Or maybe it was all the cult worshippers? Maybe I just got a high off of being able to control others. It was just a natural skill I had developed… Well, anyway… Then I met Kala, who told me that she knew how to get to the underworld and find Grigori. She and I were survival buddies for a while. I could tell that she looked up to me and I used that to get my way... When we finally made it to Grigori, they took us in pretty easily, but there was no way they were gonna let us see Azazel or any other big shots just like that. It took me another fifty, no, maybe sixty years to get to the point that Azazel would actually talk to somebody like me. He favored me fairly quickly though, probably due to my enthusiasm. But in the end, I got ahead of myself and did something stupid, which is how I ended up right here with a bunch of idiots."
"Wait, wait, wait. Hold up. Are you really just gonna end it like that?"
"What? Oh, you're right, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it like that. A bunch of idiots, and you & Asia.
"No, no, no, not that. I'm talking about what you said regarding all those decades that you just brushed over. You said you stayed in Germany for a hundred years, when you were already fifty?"
"Yeah. I was somewhere around "fifty," I think. It was the 1800s in Germany when I fell, and I left earth for the underworld sometime in the 1950s. Lots of stuff happened during that time so it's' not like I stayed exclusively in Germany, but you know... Then, sixty years pining for Azazel in Grigori's ranks and… yep, here we are."
"That's fifty…. one-fifty… How...old are you?"
An irritated vein popped up on Raynare's forehead.
"..You know, it's rude to ask a girl her age. But if you must know…. God died nearly 300 years ago, right? Since it was before the war ended... I'd estimate that I'm somewhere around 260-something... Which would mean that God died approximately 265 years ago. Making me..."
Raynare stopped her calculation and went a bit pale.
"Goddamn... Y'ur a fuckin' old hag, ain'tcha?"
This reaction earned Issei a right-good smack to the back of the head.
BAM!
"OW!"
"Keep your voice down, brat. Nobody needs to hear that."
Issei rubbed the back of his head and noted internally that Raynare was now comfortable enough with him to smack him. That or her age must really be a touchy subject.
"Geez… Someone's insecure after all. Not my fault you lived for almost three centuries and spent eighty percent of it just tryin' to fuck one dude."
"TWO AND A HALF CENTURIES, and I know it was stupid, leave me alone…"
The two went quiet for a bit. Issei broke the awkward silence with an awkward question.
"...So did you do it?"
"Do what?"
"You know, with that guy, Azazel. Did you do it?"
"What? N-No, of course I didn't… If I did, I probably wouldn't even be here.."
"Damn, you wasted thre— Ahem, two and a half centuries chasing one dude and you never even got to do it with him? That must suck."
Raynare wanted to be angry, but she couldn't. She sighed heavily.
"Haah… You have no idea… To this day, I've never even done it with anyone."
"—Wait, huh? What did you just say?"
"W-What? I said that I haven't done it."
"That's bullshit."
"What?"
"You really expect me to believe that somebody like you, who's lived for two hundred-some odd years chasing ONE dude to get it in with, has never done it before? Not even once? Wearing that outfit you always wear? Uh-huh, yeah, sure, and I'm the living messiah."
"H-Hey, don't judge me..! First of all, that outfit wasn't always the one I was using back in the day! I changed my style every now and then! And second, if I was committed enough to chasing one man for centuries on end, then what's so crazy about thinking that I wanted him to be my..! Um, you know, my first?..."
"Other than the fact that you fell from heaven due to the cardinal sin known as "Lust", I don't know, maybe it's the age?"
"Look. Shut up. I wanted him to be my first, okay? I know it sounds stupid, but it's true. I mean, if anyone was going to be it, why not make it somebody like him? Isn't that the best case scenario? From then on, the sky's the limit."
"You sure? I see it the opposite way. If that guy was your first, then it was all gonna be downhill from there. You can't really top that, can you? Plus, that doesn't sound like "lust" to me. That sounds like you were head over heels for the guy."
"Huh? No, no, it was definitely lust. Otherwise, I wouldn't have fallen out of heaven for it. Angels can't make love or have sex, but they can certainly fall in love, I think. So long as they don't act on their desires or don't indulge themselves emotionally too much, they'll still be Angels."
"But what if you were so in love with him that you couldn't resist the thought of fucking his brains out? I mean, even people in love think like that, you know. It's not all sunshine and cheek kisses."
"You sound like you know a thing or two about that."
"Maybe. —But what about you?"
"I don't. It was nothing but a simple lust of the flesh. I wasn't thinking about anything lovey-dovey, I just wanted to have him at least once. Maybe part of it was just my ego telling me that I could score somebody of that level and my pride was refusing to budge no matter what, but either way, it was lust. Nothing more."
"You sound really sure of it, like you can tell the difference. How would you know for sure though, Raynare?"
Issei didn't understand why, but Raynare stared at him for a moment before looking away.
"...I'm sure."
For whatever reason, Raynare sounded defensive about the subject. It seemed like she didn't want to admit anything to Issei.
"Really….? Well, as much as I'd like to, I just don't believe you. I just can't believe that a Fallen-Angel who fell due to lust would be incapable of getting laid for over two-hundred years."
"I wasn't i-incapable! I had people throwing themselves at me all the time, you know! I just..wasn't willing to compromise in reducing myself to the level of "lowly, human males!" I may have made a few exceptions for the women, but that doesn't count so whatever!"
"Wait, women? You said you did it with women?"
"..? I mean, they were generally better looking than the guys so, yeah, sometimes. I've done plenty of stuff with Kala too, but none of that counts, so what does it matter?"
"...That's not really what you'd call "inexperienced," is it?"
"Fine, "I've never done it with a man." There, is that enough for you? Hence, I still haven't had my "first time" yet, not by my standards at least, okay?"
"...Those are quite the standards you've got there."
"Fuck off, cherry boy. You're a virgin anyway."
"Of course I am, but I have a good reason. I'm a nearly 17 year old human male and the angel that I wanted to have sex with died in my arms almost two years ago. That's my excuse."
"..I see.."
The two acted a little awkward after Issei said that. In a bit of dramatic irony, Raynare threw Issei's words back in his face.
"...Angel, huh? Unless you mean that literally, that doesn't sound like lust, that sounds like you were head over heels for her."
"Yeah… That's 'cos I was…"
"...Are you still?"
Issei didn't answer for a long time. If the umbrella wasn't covering his view of the clouds, he'd be looking up at them right now. He said it in such a quiet voice that it almost came out like a whisper.
"...I'm not sure I ever won't be."
But Issei shook it off, preferring not to wallow in it for the rest of the day, if possible.
"Well, anyway… That guy Azazel must've lost it when he realized you were gone."
"..What do you mean?"
"I mean, because he didn't get to be with you. He must've felt like he missed out big time, don't you think?"
"Don't tease me.."
"I'm not. I just mean what I mean."
"...whatever.."
"But you know…. Even though you seem like you've always been kind of that "busty vixen" type character, it's only recently that you seem like you're more the "beautiful" type."
"H-Huh? What the heck are you even talking about?"
"You know, beautiful. Like in the same way Asia is beautiful."
"Don't compare me to Asia, you idiot. I'm obviously gonna lose out every time."
"I'm not comparing you, I'm just saying that you're similar in that way now. I could look at you both and say that you're beautiful."
Raynare didn't say anything for a while, she just turned her head away.
"...You're calling me beautiful when I've got a body like this? Even though it's all your fault.."
"I told you the scars don't matter, didn't I? And I thought you forgave me."
"It's not just the scars I'm talking about.."
"Oh, are you talking about your muscles?"
Raynare smacked the back of Issei's head once more.
"Don't phrase it like that, you make it sound like I'm some buff bodybuilder..!"
"Ouch… But what's wrong with having muscles? They're a sign of your strength."
"Girls aren't supposed to have muscles, you meathead. Especially not a Fallen-Angel like me.. In fact, because of my nature as a Fallen-Angel, I am quite literally physically predisposed to NOT have them. Because we're creatures of impurity, Fallen-Angels who fell as a result of lust are specifically destined to have erotic appearances, and it's the same for natural-born Fallen-Angels. Female 'lust fallen' are supposed to look sexy all the time. —In other words, the fact that you were able to grind my body into muscular territory through physical training alone is both a miracle and a fucking tragedy…! Now I look like a meathead too.."
"Oh come on, it's not that bad. You're not even that terribly muscular. I mean, sure, you have well defined abdominal muscles but your arms & legs just look pretty healthy to me."
"Oh yeah, they're healthy alright. Healthy enough to crush stray devil windpipes on the daily, that is! Every time I flex my arms in the mirror, my biceps become so obvious! And I can see some of the muscular definition in my once "smooth to the touch, marshmallow soft" thighs! They're even a little firm when I touch them too! Not to mention, this goddamn six pack on my stomach! It doesn't go away no matter how much I relax! You've single-handedly ruined my sex appeal!"
"I don't think that ruins anything. I think girls with a little muscle on them are fine too."
For some reason, Raynare shook her head and chuckled in amusement.
"Yeah, you would, weirdo.."
Raynare's amused attitude quickly shifted. Now, there was a more ambiguous air about her.
"But you know….. Hearing that from you, I also…."
Raynare locked eyes with Issei and the two remained that way for a while, saying nothing at all. Even Issei didn't understand why he let the nonverbal exchange go on for so long, but when he came to, he questioned her.
"..Also what?"
However, Raynare turned her face away and rubbed the back of her neck awkwardly. Her ears appeared to be burning up, despite spending all of her time underneath the umbrella.
"Ugh, nothing…. Why does everything have to be so complicated with you..? Geez… I'm so confused..."
"Oh… Sorry?"
After that, the longest conversation the two had ever had with each other finally came to a close.
"Ise~"
From the spot next to Issei's umbrella, Rias was lying on a towel on her stomach. She appeared to have removed her top in order to properly sunbathe, but now she was holding up a bottle of suntan oil and wagging it back and forth while calling out to Issei in a sultry manner.
"Would you mind rubbing some oil on me?"
"..Can't you just do that yourself?"
"Well, I can certainly do the rest of me, but my backside is obviously impossible for me to reach on my own. Won't you give me a hand?"
Issei scanned the area for anyone else that he could pin this task on who'd be willing to do it. Across the pool, Koneko was sleeping just like Asia was, and both Kiba and Akeno were swimming at their own paces. That realistically only left Issei, since Raynare was out of the question, because she'd probably rather die than do it herself.
Issei sighed.
"..Alright, fine. I guess if it's just the backside then—"
"—I've got it."
But before Issei could stand up, Raynare volunteered herself.
"Um, excuse me, Raynare. I asked Ise."
"I know you did, but I'm the one offering. There's no reason to force him to do it when I'm perfectly willing, right? Besides, I'm your servant now. It's fine to rely on me at times like this, don't you think, master?"
Raynare subtly winked back at Issei, causing him to smirk and shrug at Rias.
"Guess I'll leave it to you, Raynare. Sorry, maybe next time, Gremory."
To say that Rias frowned in disappointment was quite an understatement. She was practically fuming, with the heat coming off from her head being entirely separate from the sun's. Raynare "comforted" Rias in a derisive manner.
"Oh, poor princess. Well, it's fine, isn't it? As long as you're protected from the sun, that's all that matters, right? After all, us Devils are vulnerable to sunlight, aren't we?"
Rias remained quiet, but on the inside, she was furious. Actually, her anger was quite visible, which only amused Raynare further.
Raynare finished lathering Rias's body fairly quickly, then returning to the umbrella with the suntan bottle still in her grasp. She approached Issei with it in hand.
"Hey, you wanna help me out? I wanna sunbathe too but I'm a Devil now, so I'm probably gonna need this as well."
"Oh… I guess that's fine."
"WHAAAAT?!"
Needless to say, this didn't sit very well with Rias. She stomped towards Raynare and glared daggers at her from point blank range.
"Raynare… You're really trying your master's patience."
"Oh, I'm sorry, mistress. I meant no offense. I just assumed that Ise-sama wouldn't want to put his hands on some pushy broad who can't even live without sniffing his shirts."
"I-I've never done such a thing! You're the one asking him to lather you in oil after having him wash your back just a few days ago! How greedy you are! I bet a lust-ridden Fallen like you probably wants him to rub it all over your breasts too!"
"That's called projection, princess."
After that, the two girls' glares became serious and the air around them shifted.
"Raynare.. This is the last time I'll tell you…. Like I said before, as your master, I won't stand for your disrespectful attitude any longer. You're lucky enough that Ise and Asia were willing to vouch for you becoming my servant, so don't push your luck. This is your final warning. Knock it off. "
"I am Raynare, Asia's protector. I belong to no one but myself, and I live how I please, regardless of circumstances. Even as your servant, I refuse to be your doormat. I'll cooperate with you whenever necessary, but that doesn't mean you own me. It was my choice to become your servant, just like it's my choice to protect Asia. And whether I listen to you or not, that is also my choice."
"And it's my choice as your master on whether I will respect those ideals or not."
"Oh, you'll respect it alright. Or else, I'll make you."
And just like that, Issei was already carrying the sleeping Asia wrapped in her towel across to the other side of the pool. Rias and Raynare soon began their fireworks display in the sky above the pool not long after.
Boom! Boom, boom!
"You can't control me, princess! Not everything in life goes your way, you're gonna have to learn to get used to that!"
"I'm not trying to control you, you moron! I just want you to behave yourself for once! Besides, where do you get off on hogging Ise all to yourself?! A snappy, muscly woman like yourself ought to stay out of my way!"
"I-I'm not trying to hog him, you tramp! And you said you want me to "behave myself?!" Oh yeah, behave myself in accordance with your standards, huh! That might as well be the same thing! Plus, "behaving oneself" is some pretty rich phrasing coming from you of all people, miss troublemaker! When do you ever listen to any of Ise-sama's house rules?! You're lucky he's lenient with you or else you'd have been boiled into a bat soup by now!"
The battling between the two continued, finally catching the attention of the swimming Kiba, as well as Akeno, who was drying her hair. Issei placed Asia down on her towel in the spot next to Koneko. He turned to Akeno and requested an item.
"Hey, uh, Himejima. Is it possible to create ear plugs using your magic?"
Without saying anything, Akeno formed a magic circle over her palm and a pair of ear plugs soon dropped out of it. She handed them to Issei, to which he thanked her for and placed them in Asia's ears. After that, he was comfortable. But as the two girls were going on with their little spat, Issei realized something.
"By the way, Himejima, where's Xenovia?"
"I'm not sure. She claimed to have trouble putting on her swimsuit, but maybe we should check on her."
Issei looked up to the sky at the flashy catfight and made a bored face.
"They're probably not gonna finish for a while. I'll check on Xenovia. You two mind watching over Asia for me?"
"Of course."
"Leave it to us, Ise-kun."
Satisfied with that, Issei made his way towards the locker room areas to check up on Xenovia. When he saw that she wasn't in either locker room, he went over to the storage house and noticed her sitting idly near the entrance.
"Hey, Xenovia."
"Oh, if it isn't the Sekiryuutei."
"Told ya to call me "Ise," didn't I?"
"Right. Sorry, Ise."
"No big deal. So what's up with you? Why're you sitting all the way back here on your lonesome?"
"Oh, it's my first swimsuit so I was having some trouble putting it on. How is it? Do you think it suits me?"
"You too, huh? I guess they really are restrictive at churches after all. It looks fine though."
"Thanks. But, I just never had an interest in recreational things like these. I knew plenty of sisters who owned some and went out to the lakes with them though. I can't say that I know if it was the same at other churches, but the Vatican was surprisingly lenient with us exorcists. With sisters, it varied."
"That so? Rouen was anything but lenient. In fact, you could say they were bastards.."
"I see."
"Well, anyway.. Even if you were having trouble with your swimsuit, that still took way too much time."
"Yes, well, I actually did some thinking after I changed as well. And after that, I'd like to say: Hyoudou Ise, I have a serious matter to discuss with you."
Issei's suspicions rose at Xenovia's declaration. His immediate assumption was that it had to do with the Vatican somehow, due to the previous subject.
"What is it?"
"I'd like to ask something of you."
"..Ask something of me?"
"Yes. Hyoudou Ise. Would you make a baby with me?"
...
...
"I'm sorry, I misheard you. What was it that you wanted to ask?"
"Will you make a baby with me, Ise?"
…
…
Without saying anything, Issei stood up to leave.
"Where are you going?"
"I'm heading back to where Asia is. I don't have time for an anti-social, former-exorcist's poor joke telling."
"It isn't a joke. I was asking you earnestly."
Issei stopped and turned around to face Xenovia again. When he saw her confused expression, he rubbed the bridge of his nose, feeling a headache coming on from all of his fatigue (frustration) brought on from today.
"Ugh… You mean to tell me that you're genuinely making a request like that? You're seriously asking me to have a baby with you?"
"Yes, I am. What is so difficult to believe about that?"
"Other than the fact that we hardly know anything about each other, I don't know, possibly everything."
"I don't believe our personal connection is very relevant in this case. I'm viewing this from a very pragmatic perspective."
"Asking for children from a "pragmatic" perspective? What in the hell's that supposed to mean? Why do you even want a child with me in the first place?"
"Well, you see, the other day, I had an insightful conversation with the club president. Ever since I was born, my only purpose was to serve God in the best ways possible. It was my dream to do that for the rest of my life and even die doing it. However, with the truth of the world revealed to me now, that's gone. As a result, I asked Rias-buchou about it. What she told me was that "Devils are creatures that have desires, grant desires, and hope for desires. We are creatures of desire. Just live the way you want." So then I decided to have something which I sorely lacked back in my days as an exorcist. I've decided to strive for womanhood. And what's more womanly than birthing a child? That's what brought me to this solution, to have a baby."
"That still doesn't answer how this relates to me."
"Well, when I saw you fighting against Kokabiel, I couldn't help being mesmerized by your overwhelming strength, as I'm sure everyone else also was. I thought then after my talk with Rias-buchou that, if I had a child, they should be strong. Considering that, there was obviously no better candidate than you. You are unbelievably powerful and skilled, and you even seem like quite a wise man recently. If I was to bear anyone's child, especially a person with great power, then one of the heavenly dragon hosts is a perfect choice. And someone as powerful as yourself is bound to have strong children in the future. Besides, what with your current harem of women, you're clearly a man of great libido. It works out for both of us."
"Huh? Wait, wait, wait. What the hell are you talking about? What do you mean "harem?" I don't have a harem, and I especially don't have some "great libido" or whatever the hell you're talking about. Where in your ass did you pull all of that out from?"
"What do you mean? You can't possibly be saying that you have three women like Asia, Rias-buchou, and the Fallen-Angel Raynare cohabitating in your home and they're not your concubines, can you?"
"Of course they're not my "concubines," you fucking idiot. What the hell are you even talking about? Harems, concubines, who even has things like that in today's day and age?"
"Well, you are the Sekiryuutei, so I just assumed that you were living a fairly peculiar lifestyle."
"Fuck no I'm not. Nothing like that, at least. They must have really sheltered you in that church of yours if you think anyone's living out that sort of fantasy."
"But I've heard that plenty of heavenly dragon hosts in the past lived such lifestyles."
[She's right, partner. Many of my past hosts were spoiled with concubines. They rarely fell in love, unlike you.]
"Yeah, well, not me, you airheads. Sorry, but you're gonna have to look elsewhere for your erotic fantasies, Ex-exorcist."
Just as Issei was about to walk away, Xenovia stopped him with a grab on his hand.
"Wait. Even if that's not the type of life you're living, what I suggested still isn't such a bad deal, is it? You can have your way with me, as much as you'd like. Since I'm a devil now, it will be a bit difficult to impregnate me, but as long as you do it every day, it should be possible within a few years. You won't have to marry me and you won't even need to worry about the child's upbringing. I'll handle it, you needn't concern yourself. I would only ask that you come to play when the child expresses its desire for its father's love, that's all."
—Somewhere within Issei, Xenovia's words struck a deep chord with him. His mind brought flashes of his parents' faces before his eyes, then shifting into the faces of the godparents' who raised him.
He felt a quiet rage build up inside of him.
"I don't know why, but….what you just said right now, it really pissed me off somehow.."
The anger was enough to make his body tremble. He swiftly removed his hand from Xenovia's grasp.
"You… Do you have any idea what the hell you're even talking about? You come up to me asking about having kids like it's some damn game or something... And now you're talking about my presence in my own kid's life becoming some sort of planned routine? "You needn't concern yourself," "come play whenever they miss you?" Do you have any clue what the hell you're saying? Do you even have the slightest clue what parenting a child even means..? Goddamn, you really have a knack for getting on my bad side, you know that..?"
"I… I'm sorry. I didn't—"
"Do you think parenting is such a meaningless task that it could be reduced to "visit whenever they miss you?" You think it's fine to make a fool of good parents who go out of their way to do anything for their child like that…?"
All the while saying this, Issei could only see his father's smiling face in the forefront of his memories.
("Do you know what makes you special, Ise? It's not only the fact that you're our son. The truth is, mum and dad had a lot of trouble having kids before, so when we finally got you, we were overjoyed. You're our one and only son that we've worked so hard for. That's why, your mum and dad will do anything to make you happy, no matter what.")
When Issei looked over his shoulder at Xenovia, there was a fierce anger burning in his eyes.
"—Don't you dare look down on the concept of family like it means so little, you fucking brat!"
"—?!"
Having left Xenovia speechless, Issei walked away without a word more, burying the fury deep inside himself. He returned to the pool silently, noticing that Raynare and Rias's spat had come to an end. But that was the last thing on Issei's mind. When Raynare and Rias approached him, all the while side-eyeing each other, they both noticed his obvious change in demeanor. For reasons unknown to them, Issei was sitting beside the sleeping Asia with a scowl on his face, glaring aimlessly into the distance.
"..Ise, are you alright?"
"Listen.. We're sorry for causing a ruckus. We should've thought about Asia first. I was being immature too. I'm sorry."
He didn't respond to Rias's question, nor did he acknowledge Raynare's apology. He simply kept his glare focused across the other end of the poolside, where there was nothing but an empty space and a beach ball floating in the water.
That was...until someone picked up the beach ball with their childlike hands. The childlike demon of Issei's own reflection, smiling at him sinisterly from across the way.
《..What are you so angry about? It's not like your parents even had much of a chance to parent you in the first place, did they?》
But in the next moment, the Boy was on his side of the pool, right in front of him, and the beach ball had blood dripping down from its bottom instead of water. The devilish smile on its face only became wider and even more devious.
《"Doing whatever it takes to make you happy" doesn't really mean anything when you've been turned into a big, red puddle.》
And for the first time, Issei heard its wicked little laugh. When it was finally gone, as if it had never been there, what took its place in its former spot across the pool instead - was that accursed looking canine-like animal.
Part 7
"It's too bad that Buchou-san couldn't walk with us to school today. She said she had to continue showing her Onii-sam— Um, S-Sirzechs-sama around the town."
"Yeah, good thing too. Mornings are so much more pleasant without her."
"Raynare-san! Don't say such rude things! Try to get along or else I'll get angry!"
"O-Okay, sorry, Asia.."
Issei, Asia, and Raynare were on their daily trek to the academy, this time unaccompanied by everyone else due to the circumstances. Although Raynare and Asia were conversing normally, Issei was staunchly quiet the entire morning. He wasn't very talkative the day before either, especially after they returned home from the pool. For whatever reason, he seemed oddly distant towards everyone. It worried his housemates, of course, but there wasn't much they could do. His only response to their concerns was that he was "fine," unsurprisingly. Was what surprising was that he refused to tell Asia what was wrong either.
At some point, the trio reached the fancy apartment complex that Xenovia lived in (which was secretly owned by the Gremory.) They had arrived to pick her up for the morning walk, as per usual, but she wasn't outside to meet them yet. As a result, Asia suggested that she retrieve her.
"Xenovia-san said that she would be up late at night studying kanji… I'll go get her, you two can go on ahead."
"No, that's okay. We'll wait here, we don't mind."
Issei said nothing, but he waited outside with Raynare as Asia entered the building. Raynare took the opportunity to question Issei again.
"Hey. You've been awfully quiet lately. Something up?"
Issei didn't answer. However, Raynare was the one who understood him best, so she was the one closest to having a guess at why he was acting this way.
"...Doesn't really seem like you wanna be out here waiting for her. Something happen between you two yesterday? Did she say something annoying? ….Did she say something about Asia?"
Although Raynare's face became serious with the stern accusation, Issei eventually denied the claim.
"...No."
"Good…. But she still said something, right?"
Again, Issei remained silent. Raynare stepped a bit closer to him and stated it sincerely.
"Hey… If there's something you want to say, I'll hear it. Just between you and me. Even if it's something uncomfortable, I'm fine with it. You know I'm good for it."
Issei met eyes with Raynare, clearly seeing that she was entirely serious. He knew he could trust her, she wasn't the type to gossip anyway. In fact, on some level, Issei must've found it amusing, the fact he was almost willing to confide in Raynare despite their history together. Who could've thought that things would reach this point between them?
But even so, Issei kept his mouth shut and began to walk away.
"...I'm going on ahead."
Raynare stayed behind, watching the silent figure of Issei disappear into the distance.
Issei continued on his own towards the academy, not even thinking much about anything. In fact, ever since returning from the pool, the only things prevalent in Issei's mind were his parents. Who knows why, but he couldn't stop thinking about them. Memory by memory, they lingered in his mind.
Frankly, it was distracting. He hardly knew what was going on in the world around him. He even forgot to meet up with Kiba on the way to school, like his group usually would everyday. He just kept on walking, paying no mind to the rest of the world, seeing only his mother and father clouding his vision.
And the worst part was that, all the while remembering them, the only thing he could hear was the taunting voice of that accursed Boy.
As a result of this, Issei soon approached the academy absentmindedly, failing to notice the presence loitering near the gate, as well as his partner's calling.
《..What are you so angry about? It's not like your parents even had much of a chance to parent you in the first place, did they?》
《"Doing whatever it takes to make you happy" doesn't really mean anything when you've been turned into a big, red puddle…. Hehehe….》

[—PARTNER!]
Issei stopped dead in his tracks, waking up to the feeling of an unwelcome presence right in front of him.
When he looked across the short bridge that led to the entrance of Kuoh Academy, he saw students entering the academy without a care in the world. But that wasn't what drew his attention. No, it was something else. Someone else.
Standing right beside the academy's entrance, going completely unnoticed by the world around him, as if he didn't even exist for them...
No, that's just how it is, truly. Because right now, there isn't anyone else in the world who exists besides these two.
These two….
Opposing sides of the same coin….
Yin and Yang….
..[Red] and [White]..
Hatred and….?
As one stood near the entrance, an amused and intrigued smile on his face— the other stood opposite of him, a silent glare of hostility locked to his own.
It was only when the last few students had finally entered the academy and only these two were left that the White one removed himself from the stone of the entrance walls. Stepping forward only to place himself parallel to the Red one.
Now, the only thing separating destiny...was the measly, empty space contained within the bridge between the two.
"...Despite the lack of introduction, you immediately recognized me. I'm flattered. Or perhaps, I should say that I'm just not disappointed?"
"..."
The White one spoke, but the Red one said not a word. And yet, this only served to widen the White one's smirk further.
"Well, I didn't have the chance to do it since you were largely unaware of my presence at the time, but now that I have the opportunity, I might as well."
—In that brief moment that the two locked eyes, the colors of their spirits flashed at each other. One pair of blue - and one pair of red.
"Oppressing Dragon, Red Dragon Emperor, Dragon of Misery— Hyoudou Issei. I am Vali— White Dragon Emperor, Vanishing Dragon, and the Dragon of Ruin. We - are rivals."
Somewhere within himself, the White one must have smiled inwardly.
'...Hmm, not "green," but "red," eh? Heh…'
ZIN!
The clean glare of a sword gleamed across the White one's neck. In fact, not one, but two did.
"I don't know what you're planning, but this joke has gone far enough, don't you think?"
"I'm afraid I can't let you duke it out with the Sekiryuutei here, Hakuryuukou."
Kiba Yuuto and Xenovia Quarta held their blades against the White one— "Vali's" Adams apple, prepared to slit his throat. Or so it seemed... In truth, their blades were trembling, just as their hands were.
And so, the Hakuryuukou, Vali, commanded them.
"—What right does a worm caught in the sand have to believe that it can spook an eagle with its pathetic wriggling? Point your sticks somewhere else before I break them. Hide away in the dirt. The birds of prey are flying right now."
CHILLS!
They felt a pressure unlike any other mount atop their bodies. It was reminiscent of the Sekiryuutei's oppressive aura, yet somehow, so blatantly different. It was the same as that day when Issei fought Kokabiel. —Unquestioned superiority.
"Put your swords away and get behind me, you two."
This time, it was Issei who commanded them, his own pressure clashing against Vali's, as if it was some invisible struggle for power between spirits. Ironically, the pressure of the Red Dragon which they had both once feared in the past was now like a solace that they shielded themselves behind.
After the duo of swordsmen retreated behind Issei, Rias Gremory and the rest of her peerage appeared somewhere behind them.
"..What are you doing here, White Dragon Emperor? Planning to start a fight—?"
"—Quiet."
Of course, before she could approach any further, Issei put his hand back, not even allowing Rias to stand close enough to be beside him. It was actually Vali himself who silenced her, placing a finger over his curved lips.
"The adults are speaking, heiress of Gremory."
Although Rias's pride was damaged by the man's dismissive attitude, she held her tongue, knowing that it was only Issei who should confront such an opponent.
Raynare hid Asia behind her, but she was also hiding herself behind Issei a bit, too afraid to show herself to the White dragon that might recognize her again.
The Vanishing Dragon, Vali, scoffed.
"I didn't come to fight today, you know? I'm only here to accompany Azazel to Japan, along with his secondary escort. Although, to me, it just feels like babysitting, so I went off on my own. I'm sure Bal can handle dealing with Azazel by himself. Furthermore, I thought it was customary to greet another dragon when you're flying through their habitat. We don't usually play nice when being ignored, do we? Well, I say that, but the truth is that I'm just interested in meeting my rival face-to-face, properly this time. What about you?"
"—I have no interest in you. Begone."
Although unexpected, Vali chuckled at this response.
"Haha, is that so? If I don't interest you, then what does? I do wonder about that."
In spite of his smile, Vali's eyes darkened.
"I've heard "rumors," you know. What is it that the Dragon of Misery seeks, what truly drives him. I might have an idea of it..."
Issei's eyes widened momentarily before sharpening like blades, and there even seemed to be a fire building within them.
"..What do you know about it?"
Vali shrugged casually.
"Not much, just what I heard from Azazel's secondary escort himself. Other than that, I don't know much about you, Hyoudou Issei. That's part of the reason why I've come to see you myself. So that I could read you with my own eyes. So far…. I can't say I'm disappointed yet."
The look in Vali's eyes became serious again, even if briefly.
"But one thing I do know for sure is that you've still yet to unlock the perfect Juggernaut Drive."
For that moment, a shock passed over Issei. Meanwhile, his group remained confused by the conversation.
'..the "Juggernaut Drive?" What is he talking about? What does he know about Ise? Is he really here just to size him up?'
Before Rias could question it any further, Vali continued with his cryptic phrasing that only Issei truly understood.
"That power you used was an imperfect version. In fact, it didn't even seem like it resembled the original. Your aura was quite potent, I'll give you that, but compared to the true [Longinus Smasher], it was sorely lacking. If you had used the original version of it, Kokabiel would have been reduced to dust— no, it would've gone further than that. He couldn't even be considered an existence at all, and the dimension might've been split apart somewhere. But because it wasn't true, it fell just short. Though, it was enough to defeat him, at least. Honestly, even though it wasn't the original, I'm still impressed you were able to bring it out in that form. In fact, I would say that something like that should've been impossible. Summoning a power exclusive to the Drive and not using the Drive itself is like playing video games without a controller. It's obviously the necessary component. And yet, you didn't use it... It doesn't make sense to either me or Albion, but that's exactly what interests me about you, Hyoudou Issei."
To Issei, Vali's smile alone communicated something. It said that he understood many things that Issei still did not.
"I wonder if you'll be the one to prove my theory about Juggernaut Drive right…. Perhaps, by understanding you, I can learn to make the Drive mine."
Issei's eyes darkened ever so slightly.
[Partner... This man just said something dangerous.]
'I know, Ddraig.'
"And what exactly do you plan to do after you've mastered it..? What's the power for?"
Again, Vali gave a casual shrug, leaving Issei perplexed.
"I'll probably just continue what I've been doing up to this point and look for strong enemies to fight."
"...That's it?"
"Should life be any more complicated than that? I am a dragon, after all."
Needless to say, Issei didn't like the way Vali smiled at him after saying that.
"Say, where do you think rank within the world's power system? If it's just looking at your Balance Breaker, I'd say you fit neatly within the top 150 to 200 range if you're performing at your absolute best, like with Kokabiel. That's not too far from me, so good job, but the gap between classes gets wider the higher you go up. If we take that imperfect version of the Drive into account, the number fluctuates, but that's just how it is with that sort of power. With the perfect version, we'd probably both jump to the top 15 or at least the top 20. You can see why it's such a desirable power for me. Even Sirzechs Lucifer isn't in the top 10. —However, it goes without saying that such a formidable power comes at a serious expense. I'm sure you already know by now, right? After all, even if it's an imperfect version, it's still going to affect your lifespan. I'm curious as to just how much you lost. It's tough being a human being, isn't it?"
Rias's eyes began to widen as she gradually put the pieces together.
'...Power that comes at a great expense… Lifespan… Don't tell me…. Did Ise's lifespan suffer as a result of using a certain power?! Was it that power he used against Kokabiel? Then…'
Rias looked up at Issei worriedly, but Issei didn't flinch or take his gaze away from Vali.
"You think I care about that? I never planned on living a long life anyway."
Vali laughed.
"Hahaha, yep. You're certainly my kind of rival. I see why Azazel didn't want us to meet initially."
Unexpectedly, Issei approached Vali. Step by step, the more that Issei closed the distance, the fiercer their auras clashed and pushed against each other, until they were practically blazing like a tower of fire. The sheer pressure created a rumble below the bridge that rippled the water in the canal. Once they were face-to-face, with Issei towering over Vali, Issei looked down at his rival and growled from the pit of his stomach like a beast. In fact, the clash of their auras itself sounded like the combined snarling of two legendary dragons.
From the outside, you could almost believe that their dragon forms were standing right behind them.
"—And you're sorely mistaken if you think I'm afraid of a punk like you."
"I'd certainly hope you aren't. I want a good fight, not a game of tag."
The atmosphere was too much to handle. The bloodlust was far too palpable, enough to make everyone around them tremble in fear, like prey caught in the sights of its predator. The air felt thick and dried everyone's throats, to the point that it seemed the environment was bereft of oxygen. They were all sweating profusely, was it because of the tension or because of the heat created by their pressures?
In any case, staying in this environment felt like certain death.
—Then, suddenly, the pressure alleviated.
"Hmph."
Vali stepped aside and walked past Issei just slightly, so that they were almost back to back. He then left Issei with his final words.
"Until we meet again, my rival. I hope you continue to make things interesting. Oh, and keep a lookout. You never know what could happen at a peace conference. You never know who might show up…. In fact, I'd say there's a good chance of you finding what you've been looking for there… No, if anything…"
He ended it with a confident whisper.
"—I guarantee it."
And just like that, Vali was gone, and only the silence remained.
"..."
Issei continued his walk towards the entrance like nothing had happened.
"Wait, Ise!"
Issei stopped but didn't turn around.
"...What did he mean earlier? When he said that your "lifespan was affected," what...did he mean by that?"
"...Nothing. He was lying to get a reaction from me. I already knew that my powers had no effect on me, but I couldn't let him think that I was intimidated by his words so I just played along."
"..Is that true? You're not just saying that to make us feel better, right...?"
"It's true. I'm fine... Now, let's go."
With that, the ordeal concluded and everyone reluctantly made their way to class. Needless to say, they couldn't focus on lectures after being shaken up so abruptly like that. On the way to class, however, Issei's partner expressed his concern.
[Partner… He knows.]
'It's fine, Ddraig… Besides, two decades isn't much to me anyway..'
[You were lucky that it was only that much. Had you used that power any longer, or had you fired another shot, I doubt it would've ended well…]
'Well, I didn't. And I don't plan to use that power again any time soon, so relax.'
[...I don't think you understand, partner. More often than not, using the Juggernaut Drive...is not a matter of choice.]
'...'
As the school day continued for the students of Kuoh Academy, the intruder lingered on a certain rooftop overlooking a large area, including the academy itself.
"I suppose I'll have to wait and see just how much I can learn from my rival. What do you think, Bal?"
The mischievous (to put it lightly) Fallen-Angel, Bal, was there as well.
"Me? Hmm… I'm not sure what sort of reaction he's gonna have to them, but what I do know is that it'll be the best type of reaction ever."
Bal emphasized by pointing at his collar, as well as pointing at Vali himself when he said "them."
'So he's speaking in code because of Shemhazai, huh?'
Vali quickly caught on and began communicating in coded speech as well.
"Ah, so you were already aware of them (my involvement), huh?"
Vali said it while pointing to himself, Bal nodded.
"Yep. Lemme tell ya, Shemmy is absolutely certain of it. He's certain of who's in charge and he's certain of the traitor in our midst (your involvement.) It's only the Boss who doesn't wanna believe it, that's why the current situation is the way that it is (That's why we're both here right now.)"
"I see. Well, they're enemies alright (I wouldn't call them comrades.) Their ideals differ from ours (mine.) As for me, I just want to fight strong enemies, that's all…. Although, I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't interested in finding the one who started it all (I want to find the perpetrator.)"
"But you know who he is too, don't you?"
"Yeah… I know him (that bastard) well…."
For Vali, there was no reason to hide this. He allowed his hatred to be heard through his voice very clearly.
Noticing this, Bal snickered quietly.
"So, Bal, what do you think (about my involvement)?"
"Me? I'm just the troublemaker, I have no right to judge anyone (you.) That said, I can't wait to fight them (you) either."
"Is that so? Well, good for you. I'm also looking forward to it… By the way, do you really think that's okay (okay enough to fool Shemhazai?)"
"Who knows. Probably raises some flags (suspicion), but not enough concrete (evidence.) But ah, who cares. At the end of the day, I'm the type of guy who has the most fun when it all starts happening at once. By then, it'll be too late. He's busy anyway (getting married.)"
"Heh. With that sort of irresponsible attitude, I'd almost think you were an enemy (one of us.)"
"Hey, hey, don't lump me in with them. I follow most rules, I just like to bend some here and there to see certain results (I'll never go that far, I'll always be loyal to Grigori.) And I like to stay my hand at certain times and just let what happens, happen (I'll leave you alone until the time finally comes.)"
"I see. Very well. In any case—"
Meow~!
A familiar sound interrupted Vali and Bal's conversation. It was a black cat that had somehow made it to the rooftop they were on. After appearing, the black cat started rubbing up against Vali's leg.
"Oh, if it isn't that girl's familiar. So she sent you to check on her person of interest after all, huh? I assume you've collected enough information and now you're trying to head back?"
Meow~!
"Alright then. I'll let her know."
Vali smiled one last time while looking at the academy. He could feel his rival's presence encompassing everything within it, like a shroud of darkness…
"Until we meet again, my rival. Very soon."
END
Okay, that's enough dialogue, goddammit! Wow, this chapter was really beefy. Filled with dialogue, but all necessary. It's quite the build-up for this arc, I must say. Most of it is emotional/character build-up more than anything, but I'm sure it'll be worth it in the end.
A lot of nice stuff is happening recently now that everything has calmed down, huh? Well, the next chapter will be quite nice too, sweeter than this one, in fact. So if you're worried about diabetes, look away, your blood-sugar might spike. Why? Who knows…
Anyway, Raynare is a devil now! Who would've thought, huh? Well, she did it for Asia, because at this point, she assumed she was stuck with the devils, and she needed as much power as she can have for Asia's sake so she went ahead with it. Rias wasn't too keen on the idea, but Asia (and even Ise, believe it or not) convinced her that she was a good pick. Asia wanted to become a devil too since she felt guilty that Raynare did it for her sake, but Ise and Raynare both disagreed with that decision so it didn't happen. Also, she's worth a mutation piece, weird huh? And what's with those random back pains she's getting..? I wonder what that's about.. Speaking of Raynare, it seems like her dynamic with Ise has changed somehow. It was inevitable since she doesn't view him as a threatening existence anymore, but I wonder how she sees him now? Her attitude towards him is a little ambiguous... That being said, it's certainly enough to make Rias feel peeved a lot more often lately. She and Raynare have made a habit of butting heads, even as master and servant, much to Ise's dismay. Well, at least Ise is proud of his "star pupil!" Lucky for everybody that he's willing to train them now. What a nice guy, I'm sure he's super forgiving in spars! Looks like Ise and Xenovia's dynamic has been affected too. He doesn't seem very happy with her. Sounds like he took her words personally, for reasons she doesn't quite understand. I wonder what she'll do. And I wonder what's up with that accursed Boy recently. There seems to be a pattern for whenever he shows up, and it's getting worse too….
Vali left us with some pretty interesting things to think about, didn't he? How about that reveal though? Ise wasn't too happy with Vali's appearance at his school. Just a little more tension and the school might've collapsed under the pressure… Forget Azazel's face-to-face with Ise, Vali flipped the atmosphere on its head and crushed its skull. He seems to be very slightly different in terms of character as well. But how? It's so subtle that you can barely tell, he's 90% still in the canon version. He also knows about Ise's little secrets and more than one of them. Bal is being intentionally irresponsible as always. He isn't really an evil guy, but you certainly couldn't call him a righteous one either. His moral code is definitely skewed too…
On a side note, the day I'm finishing up writing this chapter, Sora was revealed in Super Smash Brother's Ultimate. It's completely unrelated, but it makes me extremely happy. Kingdom Hearts and Smash bros were both a huge part of my childhood, I always played those games with my brother Nathan. And of course, ever since his accident, all I think about is him. So when Sora was inevitably revealed in Smash, my brother's dream guest character, it was very emotional for me. I was basically crying for the entire morning at like 8 am, lol. It's awesome though. All I can hope for is my brother's recovery from his accident so that he can one day soon play as his favorite character.
So yeah, lots to talk about this chapter and even more to anticipate for the next. Tell me what you thought about the chapter.
What do you think is happening with Issei's constant hallucinations of The Boy? What do you think will come of his building rage? What do you think is gonna happen during the "visitation day?" (depression?) What do you think of Raynare and Issei's new dynamic? How do you think Raynare views Issei? What does Vali know and what the hell is going to happen between him and Issei? And the most important questions: How "down bad" is Rias? Does doing it with other women not count (Raynare)?
