Who am I now?
As the memories of his previous life as Alex Murphy returned, RoboCop had no idea how to cope with it all, and he was left rather confused; he had known nothing but program the moment he activated-woke up, but with the amount of programming on his mind, RoboCop hadn't thought he had a past.
He hadn't felt any kind of true curiosity relating to his origins despite knowing he was a cyborg - indeed, his internal computer regularly updated him on his life support system, detailing his respiration, his blood pressure, heart rate, so he knew he was a cyborg, alive and complete with organic organs and tissues, but his brain had been so programmed and overlaid with procedures, weapons skills, detective skills which in his past life as Murphy he'd never had.
But he knew the truth; he had lost his entire past, and he hadn't asked any of the OCP scientists who were tending to him and keeping him in top condition about what he was before his operations, but there was no doubt in his mind as the programming began to buckle under the memories of his past life they would either not know or they simply wouldn't tell him.
Or more frighteningly they would just rebury his human life, although he didn't doubt his past life would return to haunt him again. And he knew it would happen, so he kept his new discoveries to himself although he knew OCP would be preparing to reprogram his mind. In the meantime, Murphy or RoboCop was piecing together the fragmented memories he had in his mind, which had started pouring into his consciousness following that maintenance session and he'd suffered a nightmare of himself as Murphy, who was shot to pieces by the same gang responsible for the deaths of so many police officers.
He had dimly recognised that thug at the gas station, and he had - for reasons which still escaped him - said something he had once said at the scene of his human life's final moments, and the thug had recognised it and him instantly, going off in a rant and shooting futilely at him with a gun.
After the incident at the gas station, RoboCop had gone to the records office, and he'd learnt about the thug, who was Emil, and the connection to Clarence Boddicker, who was known for his criminal career, and his murder of numerous police officers. A bit more digging had brought up Alex Murphy's fie; to the Police Department, to Murphy's family, and to the records office, Alex Murphy was dead. Only a few people knew about the connection between RoboCop and Alex Murphy.
Robert Morton and several of his OCP associates knew, although if they truly cared about the mental toll it was taking on him, RoboCop/Murphy - he had no idea who he was now, and he likely wouldn't until he'd had the time to properly assimilate his unlocking memories and thoughts which he knew had not been programmed into his reconditioned mind.
Lewis certainly knew; he had a few memories of the police officer, but he knew he'd clearly made enough of an impression with her so she would identify him so accurately.
But RoboCop was at a loss, especially when he visited Alex Murphy's home. Murphy's wife and son had left long ago, but there were enough reminders at the house - a picture of the Murphy family on Halloween, memories of Murphy's wife professing her love for her husband, little things like that - for him to remember enough of the past before he'd been shot to pieces.
When Jones at OCP confessed to arranging Morton's death and RoboCop had only gone to the offices of OCP to arrest Jones in connection to his arrangement with Boddicker, RoboCop's Directive 4 program kicked in, and he could not arrest the corrupt OCP director. After he was shot to pieces again although his armour granted him better protection from ED-209's firepower as well as the attack from the police, RoboCop had been so sure he would be killed, only for Lewis to save his life. Later, Lewis brought him a drill so he could remove his helmet…and for the first time, he saw the face underneath the helmet and visor.
The face of Alex Murphy.
The sight of the face brought so many memories to the forefront of his mind, but the confusion was still there. For a long while now, RoboCop had been wondering something important, and now that question came back.
Who am I now?
He could not be Alex Murphy, even with the face; he had died and he'd been transformed into an armoured cyborg, with a brain overlapped by programming and the technology keeping him alive.
Or could he?
He didn't know. Lewis seemed to have faith, but did he?
Author's note - We know thanks to a snippet of a scene where Murphy/Robocop's arm was saved it was amputated and replaced by a prosthetic arm, OCP would blank the memories, it would take time for RoboCop to remember everything that happened to him and his past life. I couldn't help but explore that feeling he had as he went to Murphy's old house and recalled little moments.
Enjoy.
