Disclaimer: I do not own The Owl House

...

An unpleasant hacking and wheezing informed the current tenants of the Owl House that Hooty was unloading the mail onto the floor. "I wonder at what point did this become a normal thing for me to expect," said Luz as she walked over to the pile of letters that were covered in saliva and bile. Giving them a swift shake, all liquids were removed from the envelopes before she started looking at what had been delivered.

"You do know that all of those are for Eda," declared King, not moving from his spot on the couch.

"Well Eda's not here right now and somebody has to move them out of the doorway," proclaimed Luz, fully believing that her good act warranted her being permitted to search through the mail. It was with that mindset that when she found her fingers on a pink envelope she grasped it curiously before dropping the rest of the mail.

"I hope you don't expect me, the King of Demons, to pick up after you," stated King boldly.

"It's addressed to me?" said Luz in confusion before she opened up the envelope and pulled the parchment out.

"Ooh, what does it say?" asked King, bounding over to the other side of the couch in excitement.

"It's an invite," said Luz, still unsure how to react to the paper in her hand.

"Oh, oh, is it from a secret admirer? Oh no, wait! Even better! It's from somebody who hates you in secret!" proclaimed King.

"It doesn't say."

"Well that's a little anticlimactic," said King as he crossed his paws over his chest.

"It says to wait until the stroke of midnight to leave home and step into the yard and not a second sooner."

"Midnight!" exclaimed King. "But it's a school night, you're not allowed to stay up so late on a school night. Which is why you should totally do it and make your minions at school bow to your willingness to disobey the rules."

"I mean, I could, but what would Eda say if she knew?" said Luz, looking over at King with a gaze of concern.

"You sent Eda and her sister off days ago to study the world around them and see if they could discover their own unique glyphs. There's no telling when they'll get back and I sincerely doubt that they would arrive tonight at the stroke of midnight, that would be far too coincidental."

"That is true," said Luz as she looked over the writing once more before clenching her fist tightly. "Alright, I'll do it."

"That's the spirit Luz!"

Luz would spend the rest of the day crawled up in a ball wondering whether or not this was a trap set up by the Emperor's Coven or a date with an anonymous party which required her to wear something nice. King successfully counted eighty seven different things that Luz spoke of out loud before he crawled up in a ball and had a nap.

...

"Alright Luz, just five minutes left," said Luz to herself as she paced through the living room once more, the same action that she had been doing for the past two hours. Her feet ached and the previously clean clothes were now well worn but none of that mattered because the fabled time was upon her.

"Maybe one little peek out the window wouldn't hurt," she said, teasing herself before restraining her hand which had been reaching towards the curtain. "No! Whatever this is, it's a surprise and you will leave it as such."

"Do you want me to tell you?"

"Ah! King! Where did you come from?" asked Luz as she recovered from the fright the diminutive demon had given her.

"I've been watching you for the last half an hour," said King. "I even called out to you a few times but you didn't listen."

"Oh," said Luz as scratched at the back of her head sheepishly. "Sorry."

"Don't be, it was clear that you were lost in your thoughts given your constant mumblings which sound similar to demonic rituals to the untrained ear. Honestly if you'd said half of those things in the marketplace the citizens would have fled in terror."

"That's...reassuring," said Luz, putting that information into the back of her mind for a later date. Given the world she lived in, any information could turn out helpful one day. Before she said anything else her head whipped sideways to look at the clock, noticing just how many rotations the second hand had made. "Almost time."

If Luz had thought that King had given her a scare before, that was nothing when the door to the Owl House slammed open with an almighty bang! While Luz violently flinched, King himself found himself leaping straight up into Luz's arms. All of this was for naught though when they saw the person standing in the doorway, staff in hand.

"Eda?" they said in unison as they looked at the Owl Lady before them.

"What the heck are you two doing out of bed at this hour?" asked Eda as she noticed the scene in front of her. "It's a school night Luz, you should know better than this."

"I know, but, you see, the thing is," said Luz in rapid succession as her sleep deprived brain tried to formulate just what it was she was doing right now.

"Let me guess, it's got something to do with those three kids standing outside my house?" said Eda as she crossed her arms over her chest.

"Three kids?" repeated Luz in confusion.

"Don't tell me that you were unaware of your friends standing out there in the cold. Meanwhile if you've kicked them out and they're waiting obediently to come back in then I commend you on training them well," said Eda with a cheeky grin.

"No, that's not it."

"Well then tell them to get off my property and go home, it's far too late!" stated Eda.

"In a moment," said Luz as she placed King on the floor before looking over at the clock only a handful of seconds before the stroke of midnight. Time ticked by until Luz was certain that new day had begun. "Now I will."

Eda stepped aside allowing Luz to step outside and into the cold air.

"Surprise!"

Despite having had some manner of forewarning, Luz still found herself somewhat shocked as Willow, Amity and Gus celebrated something. The effect was made even more bewildering as illusioned confetti rained down from the sky curtesy of the sole male.

"Umm...I feel like I missed the memo," said Luz as she looked amongst her friends in confusion.

"They're here to celebrate your birthday," explained Eda from behind her.

"My birthday?" repeated Luz, still having gotten no clue as to what was happening.

"Your friend Amity there asked me when your birthday was," said Eda, causing the green haired girl to turn her attention to the side a bit, grateful that the darkness covered the red in her cheeks. "I remember that you told me that it was in September, whatever the hell that means. Honestly I've never heard of a more stupid name for a time of the year."

"So, after we heard this we decided that if we couldn't figure out when your actually birthday was then we'd set a date for you," said Willow, as she held a carefully wrapped present in her hands.

"So from now on Luz, your birthday is on the ninth of Fletzscwhim!" declared Gus.

"Oh my gosh Luz, it's your birthday!" said King from inside the house. "Why did nobody tell me?"

"Because you're terrible at keeping secrets," stated Eda matter of factly.

King could merely grumble in annoyance.

"Hey, umm, Luz? Are you alright?" asked Willow as she looked up at the birthday girl, noticing the tears in your eyes.

"Oh my, don't tell me that a birthday in the human world is a terrible thing!" exclaimed Gus, panicking that they had delivered some devastating news to their human friend.

"Luz?" said Amity slowly as she closed the small gap between her and Luz.

"You guys!" shouted Luz before she wrapped her arms around the nearest person, entrapping Amity in an unexpected hug which turned the witch's face crimson. "Thank you so much!"

Eda couldn't help but chuckle as the teenagers in front of her collided for a group hug. "You sure that it's fine for them to be up this late on a school night?" King asked of the powerful witch.

"It's fine," said Eda as she turned and walked into the house. "I told Principal Bump that I needed them for a dangerous adventure and that they would return to the school once I was done with them."

"And he believed that?" asked King.

"Probably not."

...

The four students ended up having to serve detention for having skipped school. None of them cared.

Except for Amity who feared that it would affect her overall record.

...

It's been a while since I've done a light hearted one shot. Hope you enjoyed.
