I regret to say I don't own HTTYD. Oh, and I do plan on writing a full story of this approach to the film.

Please let me know what you think, and feel free to read my other works.

A New Future.

As he flew away from the dragon's nest, trusting in Toothless's ability to fly safely away through the dense fogs surrounding the nest of the island, Hiccup hugged himself while he sat astride the Night Fury. The Queen Dragon was dead, killed when Hiccup and Toothless both worked together to end the life of a monster who was responsible for the last three hundred years of hell. While his former father who had disowned him when he'd discovered Toothless thanks to Astrid, who'd spied on them in the cove, had yelled in the air and called him 'son,' it just hadn't felt right for Hiccup.

He had nowhere to go, but he had known that for a long time. He'd known he wasn't cut out for the Viking life for years, but Hiccup had always tried his best to fit in despite his lack of strength, and his lack of proficiency with Viking weapons.

Only he always failed.

All he had done to try to fit in, building those stupid inventions had done more harm than good while the Vikings of the tribe fought against the dragons, who had become locked in a three-hundred fifth to the death although until now nobody had bothered to understand the underlying causes and reasons. Hiccup had longed to be a part of the war, and he made a grimace as he thought about the endless humiliation he had received whenever one of his inventions for war machines for killing dragons usually blew up in his face as well as destroyed parts of the village.

But then everything had changed. During the last dragon raid, Hiccup had gotten lucky. He had downed the most deadliest dragon ever known to the Vikings, so deadly, in fact, nobody knew anything about Night Furies. Hiccup had spent hours tracking the dragon down in the forest, he'd even had the perfect moment to kill the dragon, only he had not taken it when any other Viking would have done it in a heartbeat.

But Hiccup had looked into the eyes of the Night Fury, and he had seen fear. Hiccup closed his eyes as the memory entered his mind, and he remembered his surprise and horror at the discovery that dragons were not the emotionless demons they were meant to be, and he remembered thinking at the time, if Vikings were wrong about the emotional state of dragons, what else could they be wrong about.

All of it, Hiccup let out a breath as he recalled every single revelation which had come out and smacked him in the face over the last month; the discovery of the true nature of dragons, how possible it was to tame and even befriend a dragon so you could get close to one, how affectionate dragons could be once they realised you weren't going to be a threat to them, the wonder of flight on the back of a dragon as you nursed it back to health.

The truth of the dragon war.

When dragon training had come up, Hiccup had already decided he couldn't kill dragons so he couldn't join, but he had been forced into it while Stoick went off on a hunt. In the meantime, Hiccup worked with the Night Fury, and he had used his discoveries to earn a top place in the course but it had felt wrong. Unfortunately, he had earned Astrid's ire and her suspicion. Astrid didn't like competition or somebody taking her place as a champion, and she had followed him one night to the cove, and she had discovered Toothless and himself. Inevitably she had run back and brought the Hairy Hooligans to the cove.

Hiccup bit his tongue in anger as he remembered how the tribe managed to overpower him and Toothless, it was only because of his last secret they didn't kill them both. Hiccup had gone with Toothless on a night flight in the hopes of finding a decent enough island to travel to for a few days after he had been selected to kill the Monstrous Nightmare captured in the last raid, but instead, Toothless had been summoned to the dragon nest.

Thanks to Hiccup, the rest of the Hairy Hooligan tribe learnt the only way of getting to a dragon nest was to use a dragon to do it since humans couldn't reach it. When he heard that, Stoick made his decision to take Toothless and use him to take them to the nest and destroy it. At the same time, Hiccup was disowned by his own father.

It had taken a few hours, but Hiccup was able to get over his guilt, tame another dragon, fly out to the nest and free Toothless, ignoring the tribe's battle against the Queen. Hiccup had passed the other dragons as they'd rushed away from the nest, taking advantage of the Queen's rage at the unexpected attack so close to home to flee; he didn't know where they were going, but he hoped they avoided other Vikings in the Barbaric Archipelago, although he doubted they'd go near any. With his second dragon's help and strength, it hadn't taken long for Hiccup to rip off the restraints placed on Toothless's body, and the Night Fury was freed.

Using a battle using aerial acrobatics, and the discovery of the Night Fury's fire bursts could cause another dragon who was about to breathe fire to backfire, Hiccup and Toothless had both ended the Dragon War. They were heroes, but at the same time… Hiccup didn't want to return to Berk and rejoin the Hairy Hooligan tribe.

Yes, he might be a hero in their eyes, but he was still a weak runt. How long would it be before the tribe turned on him again, especially since there was no way he was going to endanger Toothless by forcing the Night Fury on them? Dragons were still hated by the tribe, the old wounds were likely too deep to bear.

No, it was too great a risk.

Even if he could use whatever newfound popularity to gain some kind of favour for Toothless, the last thing Hiccup wanted to do was cause problems for the Night Fury after everything else the dragon had gone through because of him. In any case, the whole world was open to him; there were lands out there, new peoples to meet, there were things for him to discover - Gobber had told him dozens of stories of his youth, and how he'd travelled a fair bit (the thought he might never see the old Viking blacksmith was painful, especially considering their bond, but Hiccup hoped Gobber understood), but now with his father's official disownment holding up, and his own decision, Hiccup saw no reason why he couldn't explore the world himself. He had Toothless, his best friend - everywhere was open to him.

But at the same time, while he stared at the dragon in wonder, Hiccup wondered if he would ever see Berk or the Vikings he had known again. And he felt sorrow that he couldn't settle his differences with his father.

Well, maybe later.

Right now, he wanted to see more of the world.
