Chapter 2

Izuku woke up the next day with renewed energy. He finally had powers of his own that for all intents and purposes were superior to most quirks, if Old Gramps were to be believed. And Izuku did believe him. His now completely green eyes with concentric circles and one tomoe each were proof enough.

Gramps had been very thorough while explaining the properties of Sharingan and Rinnegan. At the time, Izuku was very excited to hear about the abilities of those unique quirks and had paid rapt attention. He was even a little miffed when Byakugan was just glossed over but now he understood the reasons. Similarly, Gramps had given detailed information about some of the Techniques used by some renowned Shinobi of that time like his three ancestors Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura. Of them, he was fascinated by the techniques of Naruto and Sakura the most. Namely Shadow clones and Chakra enhanced strength.

Strength for obvious reasons. He was, in his own humble opinion, All Might's number one fan after all. Shadow clones because of their sheer broken nature. Physical clones, that transmit their memories and chakra back to the original upon destruction. Ectoplasm would become green with envy if he knew such a thing was possible. Essentially you have your own army of super-soldiers able to wield chakra. Even if only 6 were possible, he would have his own Six Paths of Pain.

While Sasuke too had some crazy powerful techniques, they were mostly for killing except the Sharingan Genjutsu. As much as he was impressed with the descriptions of the Chidori or Amaterasu, he knew it would be wasted effort, as a one-hit kill technique was mostly useless for a hero wannabe. Especially when he had access to the Human Path. He shivered mentally at that realization.

Ignoring his somewhat dark thoughts, he came out of his room towards the kitchen for a much-needed breakfast, after finishing his morning rituals.

"Good Morning, Izuku." Inko chirped at his son with a beaming smile. Her happiness was quite the contrast to the waterworks the mother-son duo had shared the previous night. With his newfound quirk, Izuku could finally become a hero in Inko's opinion.

The guilt, after passively denying him his greatest desire for most of his life, was too much for her. She cried and apologized again and again for not believing in him. Izuku, the sweet boy that he was, cried alongside her and didn't accept any apology.

"You weren't wrong, mom! I couldn't have become a hero if my quirk hadn't awakened all of a sudden ten years after it was supposed to." He had argued back vehemently.

Even after that she couldn't help but feel it was all her fault for not believing in her son. For letting him lie to her about the bullying he faced for the last ten years. For him having self-confidence issues so early in his life. For him not getting a quirk at the right time like all his peers. It was all her fault and resultantly, she couldn't get even a wink of sleep the previous night. She just hoped Izuku hadn't heard the occasional sobs that might have escaped her.

"Izuku," Her son lifted his head up from his breakfast as he looked at her curiously, "I'm proud of you, son. I know it is quite late to hear it but I believe you will become the best hero in the whole world." Her watery eyes, it seemed, were contagious.

Izuku just looked down again at his plate of french toast as he hurriedly shoved it in his mouth to avoid crying again after last night. A hero doesn't cry after all. Neither would he.

"Mom. Thank you." He smiled at her, though his eyes may not be fully clear yet. "I am going to train with my quirk after breakfast." He wiped away the remnants of tears from his eyes as he continued eating.

Inko furrowed her eyebrow at the thought, "But you'll get in trouble if someone catches you."

"No, I won't." He retorted immediately, "Police and heroes won't arrest me if I go to a secluded spot to practice and don't damage any property. That's how Ka-Bakugo trains his explosions. I know that."

The little slip-up didn't go unnoticed by Inko but she merely raised an eyebrow in question towards her son who resolutely kept his mouth shut.

"That may be true Izuku, but your quirk is unregistered. We can go register it on Monday, but before that, if someone sees you using it and makes any inquiries, it may cause trouble for you down the line." She explained.

Izuku's face was still full of determination but he didn't say anything back. Inko sighed, "I know that look. Fine, you can go. But listen here carefully, if anyone, and I mean anyone sees you, stop using your quirk immediately and make sure I don't have to escort you for community service or heaven forbids a detention center."

Izuku beamed back at her, "Thank you, Mom! I promise I'll take full care. No one comes at Takobah Beach anyway."

Inko pondered over the location when she remembered the said beach, "Oh, the dumpster beach? Are you sure you want to train there? From what I know, people don't visit it because it stinks real bad there."

Izuku nodded resolutely, "Yeah, it would be secluded enough for practice."

"Fine. Just make sure you come back in time for lunch. Just because it's Saturday, doesn't mean you can spend the whole day out."

(Break)

Although All Might had told him to come a day later, Izuku had come that day to see what exactly he could do with his chakra. He wasn't expecting anything miraculous like throwing fires hot enough to burn all the trash on the beach or using water from the ocean itself to raise waves. No. But the basics were called basics for a reason, right?

On his way to the beach, he had plucked out a few leaves from a tree for his use. If he remembered correctly, there were three types of chakra control exercises that Gramps had told him about. Leaf sticking, tree walking, and water walking.

If he is able to finish all three then he would be one step closer to mastering his chakra. He was very disappointed that he didn't know any hand seals which would enable him to use different jutsus. Even if he had to learn them through trial and error with matching different seals, it would've been better than nothing.

When he was younger, he liked to pretend that he had his parents' quirks and always tried to attract objects towards him or breathe fire through his mouth. Now that he may be actually able to do that, he can't help but think, what if the sage made some mistake? Was he truly meant to save the world when there were so many more deserving people out there?

With those thoughts of self-doubt, he reached, in his mom's words, the dumpster beach. It was one thing hearing it from his mother and another to actually witness the heaps of trash spread throughout. Now he understood why All Might chose this place. No one would be loitering around here of all places. He pinched his nose in irritation as the pungent smell hit him.

After a few moments, he steeled his resolve and removed his hand from his face. Yes, it still smelled bad, but he will persevere.

While Ninjutsu was out of his reach, Ninshu on the other hand was mostly limited to elemental techniques and basic chakra usage which, with Rinnegan, should theoretically come easier to him.

To get a feel for his chakra he decided to start working on that one ability that he had subconsciously used just a day before to save his erstwhile friend from certain death.

"Deva Path." He whispered as he focused on the same feeling. Now that he was actively focusing on the energy output, he could feel a new type of power spread throughout his body. He willed for the wooden bucket lying some 20 meters in front of him to come towards him. "Attract."

It was like invisible strings formed between his hands and the bucket. Not just a few but hundreds of strings sprouted from his hands that moved at incredible speeds towards his target. Somehow, he could feel them as they moved. Their size, their strength, their thickness, and their attractive powers.

Sadly that's where his senses ended, for he couldn't for his life control the said strings at all. They went haywire, moving everywhere. He willed them to stop but that didn't work. The hundreds, if not thousands of strings latched onto different junk and trash laying on the beach.

Izuku shook his hands furiously as if to detach the strings, but that didn't work as the bucket and everything in its vicinity, from broken chairs to smashed glass bottles, came flying towards him.

"Repel! Repel! REPEL!" He yelled as he closed his eyes tightly in panic and dread at his impending doom. When a few more seconds passed and he didn't feel the impact with the trash he hesitantly opened one eye only to see that he was standing right in front of a large crater of sand and he had, in his haste to master his powers, created a mini sandstorm.

When the dust settled, he saw that he had cleared a surrounding area of some 50 square meters in one go. He marveled and dreaded the power he now had at the same time.

He looked around and heard a few voices coming from behind the beach wall. "Fuck! Here goes my promise to Mom not to gain attention." He hurriedly moved along the coastline to move away from the entrance to avoid any unwanted spectators should they come to witness his illegal 'quirk usage'.

It was of utmost importance for him to master Deva Path at the earliest as it was the power he could claim to have derived from his mother. Similarly, as much as his logical side argued against it, he wanted to master the fire element to honor his father. His quirk could then be explained away as a dual-natured quirk combining elements from both his parents. Undoubtedly, he would gain different types of powers using chakra. How could he explain that if he were to use them to save people on a regular basis?

He shook his head slightly to get rid of the incessant thoughts about his powers and how to explain his powers to the Quirk Registry Office.

'Wait a minute.' Izuku realized suddenly, 'I didn't have a problem yesterday when I pulled Bakugo away from the sludge villain. Neither the sludge nor even the rubble lying nearby was attracted to me!' He thought long and hard and came to the only logical conclusion, that he did some accidental quirk usage. Kind of like accidental magic from one of his favorite pre-quirk stories, of one Harry Potter. Chakra should be technically closer to magic in the hierarchy than quirks if one were to classify. So his chakra listened to his deep desire and worked just as he wanted.

He decided it would be better if he focussed on smaller things first without actually destroying the dumpster beach. To continue his training, Izuku cleared a patch of sand by pushing some of the trash away and sat down cross-legged, placed a leaf on his forehead, and began concentration by closing his eyes.

He tried to feel the same pool of energy he had felt a few moments ago and was quick to find it. It was like tapping the water in a calm sea. As soon as he tapped it, a calmness resonated throughout his body and he was feeling at absolute peace.

Focusing on that particular feeling, he pushed that energy towards the leaf resting on his forehead and gently tried to hold it to him. Next, he knew, the leaf was removed from his forehead immediately as if it had been blasted off. He opened his eyes in the same instant to see the torn remains of the leaf falling down with the mild breeze that was blowing from the sea.

Izuku was surprised at the reaction he was seeing while using the most minuscule of his chakra which he evidently used in the opposite direction of what he had intended. He had a sudden thought. Could he weaponize this technique to blast off projectiles off of his body? It wouldn't be too difficult. He could stick some random items to himself using the sticking technique and when he faces some villains, he could reverse the effects and attack them simultaneously.

'Stop thinking dammit!' He shook his head in frustration at his easily distracted thoughts. 'Chakra exercise first.'

This time he reversed the flow that he felt previously. While earlier he focused the energy below the said leaf, now he focused the energy right above it, if that was even possible. Logically, if the energy was released from his body, then it shouldn't be able to be applied to the upper surface of the leaf. But somehow, he was able to do it.

The leaf was sticking from his forehead and even when he tried shaking his head vigorously, it didn't budge from its location. He turned on his camera app and checked out his forehead. The leaf was resolutely stuck to his forehead and had crinkles originating from the very middle as if that was the center of the chakra holding it.

He released his chakra and saw the leaf immediately detach from his forehead and fell down in pieces. Again.

He sighed in exasperation. This will be a long process.

(Break)

He returned home after hours of practice and a number of leaves carefully tucked in his pockets to continue his training in the solitude of his home.

Before departing for his training Izuku thought he would be able to learn the exercise quickly and then move on to the others that actually required him to be outdoors. Alas, the control exercise didn't come as easy to him as he had thought. Being the least physically gifted person in his class, he had assumed his chakra reserves would be minuscule, only to be proven wrong.

Even after working on the leaf sticking for hours, he didn't feel exhausted at all. Maybe he will get to know more about his chakra limits the more he practices? That seemed like a reasonable deduction to him.

After having lunch with his mother, he went back to his room to practice some more. He sat down on the floor of his bedroom to try something new.

From the sage's explanation, chakra can do practically anything most quirks can. With that thought in mind, Izuku concentrated on his chakra that flowed through his body. Within moments he got lost in the serene flow as his body felt lighter and he lost all sense of self. He was floating freely in calm waters. Or maybe in space.

After a few minutes of the continued exercise, Izuku opened his eyes to the sight of his room. He was almost overwhelmed at the visual he was seeing. Each and everything in his vicinity was clearer than it could ever be. He could see the minute imperfections in the walls of his room; the lone spider crawling in the very corner, weaving its web; and even the previously invisible layer of dust on the floor.

'I need to clean my room.' He thought as he had unconsciously activated his eyes while channeling chakra throughout his body.

From the corner of his eyes, he caught the sight of the wall clock and was amazed to find that almost an hour had passed since he started meditating. In his own opinion, it couldn't have been more than 10 minutes.

'So I need to keep track of time while I concentrate using chakra.' He concluded.

Izuku then took out a new notebook that he had decided to use to write down his own 'quirk' usage and ideas for new techniques.

Name: Izuku Midoriya

Quirk: Rinnegan (Should it be called Rinnegan or Rinne Sharingan? Or simply chakra? Or something entirely new? Would someone know about the origins if I use the true name?)

Abilities unlocked: Improved Vision, Attract and Repel (Practice required for control)

Abilities to try before UA exam: Vertical/Upside down walking, Water walking, Fire Element, Flight, speed, and strength.

Izuku wanted to add more things to try but he knew that realistically speaking it would be difficult for him to get even this much done before the exam. Adding more things to learn would only cut into the practice time he would have to master these skills.

'All my other classmates have had nearly 10 years to master their powers. I just have one year. The only way to become better than them is to give more than my one hundred percent.' He decided, full of determination for his goal to become the best hero he could be.

With that thought in mind, he began the leaf concentration exercise again with renewed vigor.

(Break)

The Next day

Izuku had spent the whole of last evening and a good part of the night doing the leaf concentration exercise. If only he didn't need to sleep, he could have advanced more in the very basic exercise. That didn't mean he was disappointed in his progress. He had already mastered sticking one leaf to his forehead without either blowing it to pieces or clutching it too tightly to remain intact after detaching the leaf.

The new problem was concentrating on more than one leaf at a time. As soon as he added another leaf to the mix, either it didn't stick properly or both leaves were repelled away. But any progress was better than none, right?

Izuku reached Takoba beach at 5:30 AM. He stopped and panted hard from his early morning jog to the beach. His lungs were on fire and he just couldn't fall down on the ground fast enough. The dirty pavement surrounding the beach entrance did nothing to stop him from laying right there, taking in deep breaths to relax his thoroughly spent body.

To practice multitasking, he had activated his eyes on the way and took in all his surroundings in High Definition. It was another decision of his to keep his eyes turned on as much as he could to get used to the improved vision in the long run. From what he understood, using Sharingan continuously takes up a good chunk of your chakra but till now he hadn't felt any noticeable effect of the same. So he wanted to determine his limits while using his eyes.

After catching his breath, Izuku stood up and went to the clearing he had created the previous day to continue his leaf concentration exercise. He sat down cross-legged and took out dozens of leaves he had plucked on his way over and placed two of them on his forehead as he began the exercise.

After some time he thought he had finally made some progress when the leaves didn't blow up or slid down his forehead.

"I AM HERE!" yelled one blond, America-obsessed idiot, otherwise known as All Might to all.

"Waahhh!" Izuku shouted as the two leaves on his forehead blew right into smithereens. "Dammit! I was almost there."

All Might to his credit looked sheepish as he said, "I apologize, young Midoriya." He deflated back into his lesser form, "I didn't know you were concentrating."

Just like that, all frustration within the young man evaporated within seconds as he gave his hero the biggest smile he could manage, "You need not apologize, All Might! I should have been more aware of my surroundings."

All Might chuckled, "Very well, Midoriya. I think we should focus more on the reason we are here today. Your training for the coming year before you join UA." He took out a bound set of papers that he quickly shoved in Izuku's hands, "Behold, my very own creation, 'Pass the test, American Dream Plan!'"

Izuku excitedly looked over the bundle he now held which had very detailed plans about what he needed to do in order to prepare for his upcoming training marathon. It was a mostly physical plan that detailed everything from the time he woke up to the time he went to bed.

From laying out a schedule for different exercises like pushups, squats, or sit-ups to detailing his new nutrition plan to his sleep, school, and study hours. Everything was planned, except for one key detail.

All Might explained, "This is the plan that I followed before joining UA myself. I have tweaked it a little to be more suitable for your body type and current strengths, but the bulk of it would be similar to what I went through."

"That's great All Might," Izuku smiled.

All Might, ever the perceptive one, noticed that the smile never reached Izuku's eyes, "Do you want me to make some changes to the plan, young Midoriya?"

Izuku quickly shook his head, "No, no, it's just… It doesn't leave much time for me to practice my quirk between physical training and my school work. And…" He mumbles shyly, "I've just received it so I wanted to practice it more." Then in a louder voice, "But you probably know better."

Toshinori immediately felt guilty for his decision. He wanted to find a successor so badly, it never occurred to him to think about what his new protégé might need for himself. From the blatant bullying, he witnessed the young man face just a couple of days ago, it was quite obvious he had confidence issues. Even if All Might were to make mistakes while training him, which won't be a surprise owing to his inexperience, Midoriya was unlikely to call him out on it, seeing the high pedestal he had placed All Might on.

Toshinori lightly put a hand on young Midoriya's shoulder who was finding the sand his feet very interesting for some reason, "Is that what you truly want? To practice your quirk?"

A shy nod was all he received in response. "Alright. I'll tweak the plan some more to accommodate your quirk practice time." Izuku positively beamed at his idol. "On that note, what exactly is your quirk? Have you figured it out?"

Izuku chuckled nervously, "Hehehe, that's a complicated answer."

All Might raised an eyebrow and Izuku sighed, "My mom's quirk is Attraction of small objects. As the name suggests, she can attract small objects towards her. I thought my quirk is an advanced version of that, but I am not sure. See, my eyes changed as well and now I can see very clearly. Much more than I was able to before that day. Whatever I see using my quirk, I remember. As if the memory is engraved in my head."

Toshinori was impressed. Although he could feel from the young man's demeanor he wasn't being completely honest about what he knew about his quirk. "So you have a dual-natured quirk. That's rare in itself. But having two totally unrelated natures. It's as if you have two quirks packed in one."

Toshinori didn't want to suspect a child of wrongdoing, especially when he was dead. But he had spent the majority part of the last four decades in fear of that fiend to let such an incident go without full inquiry.

Izuku nervously rubbed the palm of his hands together, "That's not it, All Might. I think my quirk is only my eyes which can… copy other quirks, I think?" Izuku half stated half asked.

Toshinori rubbed his chin thoughtfully. It was quite clear that Midoriya knew more but was hesitant to share the full details. Could it be that he was an offspring of that man? He dismissed that thought out of his mind. Young Midoriya was a good person, he couldn't be related to him.

"In that case, we can visit a Quirk specialist and get it all cleared up." All Might suggested.

"NO!" Izuku shouted but quickly recomposed his voice, "I mean, ever since I went to a quirkologist when I was young, I…" His voice trailed off as he remembered that horrible day 10 years ago.

"Alright," All Might said at last. Izuku looked up very quickly at that. "It's clear you know more than you are willing to share at the moment."

Izuku's face rapidly paled at that statement, "All Mi-"

Toshinori raised his hand to stop his protégé, "It's okay young Midoriya. You can have your secrets. As you know, I have mine."

Izuku shook his head, "No All Might, I want to tell you, it's just that it's…" too impossible to believe was what he wanted to say.

"Stop, young Midoriya. We have a lot of time for you to share your secrets. Tell me when you're ready and not a moment before."

Izuku smiled a teary smile, "Thank you All Might."

"Have you registered your quirk yet?" Toshinori changed the subject. When Izuku shook his head he continued, "You should get it registered within the next year as per the law."

Izuku's eyes widened at the implications, "One year? Not one month?"

All Might chuckled at that, "Of course. There is a precedent in the Quirk Registration Act stating that a person may avoid registering their quirk if its complete nature is unknown at the time of manifestation. Provided it is registered within one year of that date. It also has a clause stating that such a person has to be regularly monitored by a registered quirkologist or an active pro hero, which I just happen to be."

Izuku looked flabbergasted at the fact, "But isn't that… dangerous? What if the person becomes a villain or commits a violent crime. Without a proper registry, he won't be able to be tracked down."

All Might smiled at that, "Normally yes. But remember most quirks come forth when children are 4 or 5 years of age. A year from that is still 6 at the latest. To prevent any misuse by any grownup suddenly getting a quirk, there is another rule that states that all adults must have registered quirks without fail at all times. You fall in the little grey area. But worry not, for I am here!"

Izuku laughed at that. "Thank you All Might!"

"Oh quit that already! You've said that too many times to count."

Toshinori smiled at his smiling protégé. The laughter of the teen warmed his heart in many ways. "Now, what are the current capabilities of your quirk?"

"Well, other than my copy eyes, I can manipulate the gravity of any object in relation to me. I can attract them towards me or repel them away from me. Theoretically, I should be able to fly one day if I repel the ground away from me."

Toshinori knew the quirk was really strong from what he had witnessed a couple of days earlier. "You know your limits yet?"

Izuku shook his head, "See that patch of beach over there?" He pointed towards a suspiciously clear part of the beach where sand seemed to be cratered in and the trash was suspiciously missing. "I tried using my quirk to attract a single bucket towards me. That happened." All Might's eyes widened. "If I hadn't repelled it in time, it could have hurt me seriously."

All Might nodded slowly as he took in the information.

Izuku continued, "Since yesterday, I have been trying to stick these leaves to my forehead using my quirk and then repel them without breaking them. Initially, I couldn't even do it with one leaf, now I am closer to mastering two." His voice took on a proud tint towards the end.

Toshinori was impressed, "That's ingenious. You are working on your control rather than power to slowly move up the weight as you become more proficient. That young Midoriya is a training method that most people don't realize until they are already pros."

Izuku blushed as he rubbed the back of his neck nervously, "I'm sure it's not that great. Every hero student must have realized that at some point or other."

All Might shook his head, "No, they don't, young Midoriya. Most young heroes are into becoming as strong as they can while throwing their strongest attacks in a competition amongst them. Take Endeavor for example. He is a master at fire control to minute level and hardly makes any mistake due to losing control of his quirk. Back in the day when he debuted, his go-to strategy was to use as much fire as you can to solve all problems. Needless to say, his agency had to pay quite some damages in those times."

Izuku had taken out his notebook as he took diligent notes on the impromptu lecture he was receiving.

"That is a good method you chose to train with. When you are done with this leaf exercise, you can move further by attracting and repelling small and soft objects like small cushions or cotton balls. When you are confident with your skill, you can move on to heavier objects. And don't even think about trying out flight until you have mastered other aspects of Attract and Repel. And never without my supervision." All Might affirmed.

Izuku was quick to agree to that. He had mentally decided to work on tree/water walking and his other skills in his own time as they didn't seem to be that difficult. But now he knew better than to make assumptions about what his chakra could or couldn't do.

"Needless to say, no quirk practice indoors, young Midoriya," All Might continued in the same stern tone, "While I can save you from legal trouble for non-registration of your quirk, if you accidentally destroy something, even I won't be able to do anything. Your quirk is dangerous and until you have good control over it, you must use it responsibly."

Izuku nodded emphatically, "Of course, All Might."

All Might nodded back when he was satisfied with what he saw within the young man, "Good. Now that the talk is over, it's time for the good part. For the next year, your task is to clean this beach. Without using your quirk."

"WHAT!?"

All Might could only grin at the look of indignation on Izuku's face. "Did I stutter, young Midoriya? A hero must have good physicals in addition to their quirk control. What if for some reason you cannot use your quirk and need to simply run quirkless. What if you face a villain who is faster than you can even lift your hand?"

Izuku shook his head, "No, I get why I need to work physically. I asked why I needed to clean the beach without my quirk. I can practice Attract and repel here without the fear of wrecking anything important and continue the training schedule you have formed here," Here he lifted the workout regime he held in his hands, "And when the beach is clean, I can always join a gym to continue exercising. I know I can find a cheap one if I ask around in the area."

All Might stared at Izuku dumbfounded. He coughed sheepishly after a few moments, "Yes, that is quite a good idea, young man. Alright, we'll do it your way." Izuku only beamed at the older man.

"Okay, give me 20 pushups, right now!"

Izuku groaned but complied with the order.

AN: Hey y'all! I'm back with the second chapter of the story. And what a response it has been! With a single chapter, we crossed 100 follows and favs. You guys are amazing. And thank you for all your warm words. As of this chapter, this story is no longer a one-shot.

Now, a few important announcements:

1. Izuku is slightly more than a year away from UA entrance exam, not ten months (i.e. he is nearing the end of his second year of middle school.) It was intentional so don't point out that 'mistake' in reviews.

2. Pairings. I know, I said in the last chapter it would be Gen fic but that would soon make it a boring fic. So the options are Itsuka, Mina, or Camie. (Will not be a harem.) Choose one or two options at max. Leave your answers in the reviews or PM me.

3. I want suggestions about his quirk registry. I know old energy manipulation is simple and easy to use, but everyone does that! Till now I am thinking of either a copy-type quirk or an ocular quirk that enables his many abilities. All suggestions are welcome.

4. As stated above, I need a Beta reader for this story. Anyone interested, PM me.

That's all folks. Any questions? Leave them in the reviews, I answer all questions as long as they are polite.

Till next time.
