OLD MAGIC

Chapter 70: Next on the Agenda: The Ministry of Magic

Monday rose cold and gray but that wouldn't stifle the excitement of what the day would mean. Since departure for the fighters from Hogwarts was very early, they opted for a quick but filling breakfast in Hagrid's cabin. It was cramped but they all managed to stand or sit as suited them.

Firenze was the last to arrive, deciding to remain by the door while the rest took seats where they found them. Dobby popped in before anyone could speak. Simple but hot meals appeared before them all even Firenze.

"Thank you Dobby, that was thoughtful of yeu," Hagrid said, taking a big bite of his breakfast sandwich."

"Welcome you are, Professor Hagrid. One must be fortified to do well in battle even if this be but a meeting before it. Dobby only wants to make sure all come home again safe."

"Too true, Dobby and there should be no casualties if what I heard about the plans for this mission are true," Lupin said sipping his tea and also eating a much smaller version of Hagrid's breakfast sandwich.

"I have had an opportunity to watch Auror Shacklebolt as he worked with Jason and I am impressed by his quick thinking and careful planning of the missions we are planning. This makes me feel very confident things will go well and I am not known for being this positive," Firenze tossed in, as he ate his breakfast in quick bites.

"Glad I am, Kingsley has done better than assumed by many even himself. Your recommendation of him was well founded Severus," Hagrid agreed with Firenze's assessment.

"Yes, you were completely spot on that he was just the person needed to lead this massive undertaking," Dumbledore said smiling.

Snape just smiled back as he finished his food and drank the last of his tea. "Thank you, but I think Kingsley should take all the credit for being willing to take on such a task in the first place."

Everyone said, aye and raised their cups in respect. "But I am pleased you were there to suggest him in the first place because he is indeed the right person we needed right now. And with that, I believe I had better take my leave in case there might be any problems with the Aurors departure. See you all at Elder Council Headquarters at nine on the dot." With that, Snape rose and grabbed his cloak from the hook on the door.

"We'll be there on time, Severus," Dumbledore assured him, finishing his own cup of tea.

With a brisk nod, Snape left quickly, making for the main gates to apparate away.

"Excuse me sirs, does anyone want Dobby to send you to your destinations quicker," the house elf asked. He had been waiting quietly on the floor by the boar hound, stroking the big dog on its head which it enjoyed immensely.

Dumbledore thought a moment then came to a decision. "That is a great idea, Dobby. And I believe that would only be Professor Lupin and I, correct?" He asked of the others.

"That be right, soir. Firenze and I have our own ways to get to the council," Hagrid confirmed already rising to his feet as the other were.

"Good, then we should be off. You going to remain with us, Dobby, and travel with the Order?" Dumbledore asked the house elf now standing next to him.

"No headmaster, I will not be. Will send you to Grimmauld Place then Dobby go own way to council home," Dobby demurred.

"Very well, if you are ready, Remus?" the headmaster asked, cloak on and standing ready near the door.

"I am Albus," Lupin said pulling his own cloak on then taking a stance beside Dumbledore.

"Whenever you're ready, Dobby. See you all very soon." Dobby snapped the two away seconds after Dumbledore's last word. As soon as he had done that he too snapped himself away.

"Well just be the two of us, shall we away?" Hagrid asked, pulling his great shaggy coat on. "Fang!" The boar hound got to his feet and took a stance next to his master. Looking over at Firenze, he asked politely, "Want to travel with me?"

"Yes I would. You would get us there faster. Magorian and the herd are already there, thank you Rubeus."

"No problem," Hagrid smiled then made a light sweep of his hand and they disappeared.

Dumbledore and Lupin appeared in the parlor so suddenly it took them both a moment or two to get their bearings.

"I say, that is a truly weird way of traveling. I had no sensation that I went anywhere until I was suddenly here," Lupin observed, shaking his head.

"Yes, it does take a bit to get use to but I must admit it is a less troubling way of travel. Now, let's ascertain who might be here already," Dumbledore said heading out of the parlor and towards the kitchen where voices could be heard.

Pushing the swing door open, the two could see that nearly all the members of the Order were there and just finishing their own breakfasts.

"Ah, was wondering when you two would show, Sirius Black drawled as he entered from the kitchen beyond. Sitting at the table were the Weasleys, Arthur, Molly, Charlie and Bill, as well as Hestia Jones, and Evangeline Vance.

"We're on time, I believe. Who isn't here yet?" Dumbledore asked not paying Black much mind.

Looking around the room both Lupin and Black noted who was there. "I believe we are still waiting for Moody, Figg wont be part of this, and, of course, McGonagell has to remain at the school, and your, brother, Aberforth, headmaster," Tonks chirped in as she appeared behind him.

"Aberforth will be here and …. " Dumbledore began before there was a slam of the front door and in limped Moody. No more than a few minutes later and Aberforth also stomped into the house looking rather disheveled.

"Had to secure the bar," Aberforth rumbled in response to all the questioning looks.

Dumbledore simply nodded at his brother than took out his pocket watch and noted it was nearly time to leave. "Let's go to the parlor, it's larger." He led the way and the rest followed. Once there, they looked at him expectantly.

"So what are we waiting for, Albus," his brother grunted, impatient to get this over.

Suddenly a brief flash filled the room then it cleared to reveal a Dwarf with an odd device in its fist.

"We were waiting for him," Dumbledore said casually.

"Be all of ye traveling to the Elder Council present?" The Dwarf asked abruptly.

"Yes we are," the headmaster confirmed.

"Stand in a circle around me," the Dwarf ordered stepping into the center of the room. It waited rather impatiently while the wizards did as he asked. It was a tight fit but soon all were standing in a circle nearly shoulder to shoulder.

Nodding it's head, the Dwarf did something to the thing in its hand and then they were gone. No one had a chance to even draw a breath before they found solid floor under their feet once more.

"Cor, that were right weird, that was," Nymphadora Tonks exclaimed.

"That's one way of putting it," Bill Weasley muttered

"What a fascinating way to travel and easier than our methods," Arthur Weasley marveled.

"You would say that Dad," Charley grimaced, uncertain if he liked it or not. Bill just shook his head.

"Wasn't so bad at all," Molly said.

"It worked flawlessly," the Dwarf was telling a very big Dwarf dressed in fine clothing and sporting a fine long beard, who had apparently been waiting for their arrival.

"That be wonderful news, Damish," his leader said, smiling. Then he turned to address the Order. "Greetings, I be Blayrock, leader of the Dwarves. Follow me to the council chambers, please." He turned and began to walk toward a door.

Only then did the members of the Order realize they were in a round room of white stone with no windows and only one door. Near the door a huge goblin dressed in a uniform and armed with a wicked looking scimitar apparently stood guard. They filed out of the room under his watchful eye.

"Must be where they allow people to transport in and out. Great security that is. That's smart and keeps them from being invaded," Bill Weasley observed. His job was getting into secure places for the goblins he worked for in Egypt so security was his skill set besides his formidable curse breaking one.

Blayrock lead them to a wide staircase of white marble but slip proof. He immediately headed downward. The rest murmured among themselves as they took in their surroundings.

"We must be in some kind of huge building that's invisible from the skies because no has reported something this big in the area," Moody muttered, his expression guarded.

There was no time for more conversation because they had reached another floor.

Blayrock lead them to the right and down a wide hallway that held a few doors, all closed, large murals of woodland scenes adorned the walls and set at the end of the hall was a huge pair of heavy but plain doors that was also close. Before them stood an Ogre dressed in the same uniforms they had seen upon arrival.

Blayrock raised his thick fingers and made a strange signal that caused the guard to nod and turn to open one of the doors, pulling it towards himself. The Dwarf strode forward and walked past the guard into the room beyond, the Order hard on his heels.

First view of the room was immediately disorienting and confusing. As they stood there trying to understand what was going on, they witnessed creatures of all types hurrying in and out of the many doors located at the back of the room which was as large as a Quidditch field. Added to the commotion of so many creatures speaking in different languages was the constant sounds of whirring and buzzing. Only a few of the Order actually knew what those sounds signified.

"Oy that be the sound of muggle devices, lots of them. Look on the walls, those be view screens I reckon they are called. I bet they have computers too," Tonks said, her face and hair changing riotously with her excitement. Of all of them, she had probably the most experience with modern muggle life, loving its active night life of bars and dance halls.

"I believe you are right, my dear. Amazing! The forest people have actually found a way to use muggle science and tech with magic," Lupin said awestruck.

"Computers …. view screens …? What be these muggle things," Arthur Weasley asked excitedly. Muggle devices were his life's work but he had not much opportunity to see much of what was called muggle tech. Which knowing his work, one would think he would have gone and spent some time in the muggle world proper to learn more rather than staying homebound and being satisfied with the drek that ended up in the wizarding world.

"As amazing as all this is, Arthur, do remember we are here on serious business. Perhaps later they will allow you to indulge your passion," Dumbledore admonished though his small smile took the sting out of it.

"Oh right, right, of course," Arthur said, properly chastened but his eyes were still bright with unbridled excitement and wonder.

Molly, though a bit overwhelmed by everything going on around her, absently gave her husband a light pat on the back of understanding. She noted Blayrock was leading them toward a huge polished table of oak sitting about halfway from where they entered to where the constant flow of traffic through the doors at the rear of the room was. Sitting at the immense table were some fifteen different creatures sat talking and shoving papers back and forth to each. The center of the table held files, more paper, writing tools, several odd looking devices here and there and books. At its head sat an impressive looking half-giant, a bit taller than Hagrid and definitely cleaner looking as well.

"That must be the Elder Council leader Jason," she mused, impressed by his more dignified demeanor which wasn't usual for half giants.

"Blimey, would you look at that!" Hestia Jones exclaimed as she pointed at the huge wall map of the wizarding world they were walking past.

"How beautifully rendered. I haven't seen one so complete and on such a scale," Evangeline Vance agreed, craning her head upward to see it all.

As the group approached the meeting table, they couldn't help but ooohh and ahhh at what the wall to the left of the table revealed. Strange boxes the size of windows hung from the wall and were presently filled with images that moved across it's face. These seemed to be the wall screens Tonks had mentioned. Below these boxes were many small tables with dozens of people and creatures diligently working at them.

As if that wasn't enough for their minds to grasp, just beyond the meeting table and on the right wall sat yet another table, albeit half the size of the one the leaders sat at, held something large and interesting but they were still too far to see what it might be.

The half-giant stood as they approached. "Greetings members of the Order of the Phoenix. My name is Jason and I be the elected leader of the Council of Elders." He gave a small bow of his head. They returned it politely.

"It is my great pleasure to finally make your acquaintance Jason. I believe you know who I am," Dumbledore said warmly, reaching out to shake the leader's hand.

"Indeed yes, Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts and with a string of other titles as well," Jason affirmed as his huge hand engulfed Dumbledore's briefly before letting go.

"Ah yes," Dumbledore snorted, pulling on his beard. He was already liking the affable half-giant. "Should I introduce my people?"

"Nay, not right yet, sir. It might be faster to wait until Madame Bones arrives and a few other of the council that have yet to arrive. Please, explore, ask questions of my people, get familiar with how this operation is being run. That will help you be ready for what's next and the meeting to discuss plans, agreed?" Jason suggested.

"Yes, if that is best for you and I thank you for the hospitality and the efforts you have gone to in taking on the Dark Lord's army the way you have. I look forward to learning more about you and the council once peace is ours," Dumbledore said sincerely.

"Well said, sir, " Jason said, pleased with the response. He was about to say something else when an owl and two ravens swooped in and made a point of stopping in front of him by way of landing on the table. One raven made an urgent caw at him.

"Sorry all, duty calls it seems." Jason turned from them to reach for the message the raven held as well as apparently listening to what the raven seemed to be saying to him.

Dumbledore shook his head at this ability and wondered at it. He needed to ask how one learned to speak to the animals this way. It was a fantastic way to be in touch with the world in a much broader sense.

He moved away from the table and gathered his people close. "His suggestion is a sound one. Seeing and asking what these people are doing to monitor the enemy seems to be a good way to spend our time until all arrive. So spread out and learn." With that admonition, Dumbledore headed toward the busy work center beneath the view screens.

Since this held Arthur's interest as well, he and several others trailed after him. But none of that held any immediate interest to Molly. She was more interested about the other table across the room so she made a wide detour around the busy main table until she reached the far wall. Hestia and Evangeline decided to follow her.

"How remarkable! This wasn't done magically at least not completely," Lupin remarked, coming up beside her and other two to stare down at the amazing sight before them.

"You're right, so I wonder how it was created," Molly murmured staring in fascination at the most elaborately designed layout of the wizarding world she had ever seen.

"It be called a 3D model created by a computer program," a deep, gravelly voice spoke from behind Lupin. Turning, he saw Blayrock had rejoined them.

Blinking for a moment, Lupin blurted, "Forgive me sir, but how is it you can speak of these muggle things with such ease and knowledge?

The leader of the dwarves smirked. "No forgive me for enjoying a bit of pride over you wizards, sir. It be our nature to be curious and open to new ideas wherever they may originate which is how we invent so many of the wondrous things you wizards use in your day to day lives. But while wizards shun anything muggle made, we seek out their world and take what we have learned and convert them into something we can use as well. The muggles are a fount of endless ideas, inventions, and so much more that would amaze you. Their technological advancements leave our magic in the dust. We but take that knowledge and work hard to catch up before they overrun us."

"Why on earth do we want to catch up as you put it?" Molly interrupted. "Our magic has been sufficient for centuries. Why would we need to even know about what muggles do within their world?"

The Dwarf sighed and rolled his dark eyes at them. "Whist woman! That attitude is exactly why the wizarding world fails to realize the threat muggles pose for our world." Molly began to object but he put up a palm to forestall her.

"I cannot speak about that issue at this time. It must wait until after this war be ended. What I can say is, muggles have far outstripped us with things such as being able to communicate with each other over vast distances without spells or firecalling. They can travel in amazing vehicles called planes that fly them to their destinations. And, what's worse, is they can see the entire world from satellites they put up in space. Those can observe everything and one day may even see us despite our magical shield. Muggles be a danger, just keep that in mind." He walked away but was only going to the far side of the table, stopping near a section that looked to be Hogwart's castle.

Molly frowned at him in consternation but it was obvious the Dwarf was not going to speak more on the subject of muggles. Remembering her manners, she introduced herself, "I am Molly Weasley, good sir. Since we can't ask about that astonishing bit of news you've dropped on us, could you tell us about this...ah... amazing recreation before us … a diorama would it be called?"

"It could be called that though it be vastly inaccurate of something that is the exact depiction of our world in real time imagery. I am particularly proud of this piece of work my Dwarves and muggles that be friends of our world … some squibs, some not … but all very smart in the world of computers, engineering, geography, researching, and many other fields, were able come together to produce this masterpiece," he said proudly before beginning to move away.

"I must apologize for not being able to remain to satisfy your curiosity about this but I must be off for I have other tasks awaiting my attention before the meeting. Study this, look it over well and above all, enjoy the technical skill it took to make it." With a tip of his head, Blayrock strode off, heading toward a door where many people and beings were passing in and out.

The Order members standing around the table could only gape after the being.

"Well, that was a lot of information in one go. Imagine working and learning from muggles," Hestia said, shaking her head in disbelief.

"Did you miss what he said, Hestia, dear?" Evangeline asked archly. Hestia gave her a raised eyebrow in question. "Why the part he said muggles would be a threat to our world."

"Nonsense," Shot from Hestia's mouth before she could stop it.

"There is no nonsense about it. I've been thinking about nothing else but what we learned during that fateful meeting with Hagrid and Snape. How Hagrid had said Harry Potter was the key to a new future and it had to do with muggles," Lupin said firmly.

"Yes, you're right Remus. I do remember that night … not easy to forget though it was a lot of information to absorb so I think we all could be forgiven not grasping it at that time," Molly said, so no ones feelings would be inflamed by what could sounded like being told one was being stupid. "Why don't we do what Blayrock suggested and just look at this in detail," she said forcefully to get everyone's attention back on the unique layout before them.

While they had been listening to Blayrock, Moody, Black, and the Weasley boys had drifted over to the board as well and were now pushing close to study the board for themselves.

"Look at this!" Black exclaimed as he pointed out where the enemy was shown to be at this moment and where the Elder Council forces were arrayed. "They have done our work for us and we ignored them," he said incredulously.

"This is bloody brilliant and yer right, Black, the blighters have done the work we should have been doing along side them. We've been bloody fools," Charlie Weasley said, his tone disgusted. He leaned over the section of the map where the army was supposedly stationed. "Ya know, brother mine, I could see a very good use for my dragons especially as some of the enemy there are vampire, wolves, and giants."

Moody looked up at Charlie sharply, staring at the man with his magical eye for a few moments before he spoke. "You may be correct, Mr. Weasley. Using the dragons, if they be under control, mind you, would indeed even the battle forces. We need to bring this up at this meeting."

"Well as I live and breathe, did I hear the great Alastair Moody actually agree to a plan not his," Molly teased. She always had a soft spot for the irascible former auror.

Moody gave her a small smirk that vanished just as swiftly as it had appeared. "I learn, Mrs Weasley and what I'm seeing and hearing is a very sound battle strategy."

"Oh I agree but it's nice to hear you give credence to one of my son's ideas for once," she said sweetly. He blushed but didn't say anything more.

"Mom, that wasn't very nice," Charlie chided her while hiding a smile.

"I am in full agreement that using dragons in that mountainous region makes bloody good sense. Those giants and that terrain would be a nightmare for most of us," Black interjected.

"Don't forget all of you," Lupin interrupted, "the Elder Council has a formidable force of their own and if we introduce dragons we need to be sure they recognize our forces from the enemy's army."

"Good point. Dragons aren't that discerning even when you point out who not to take down. Mayhap we need to bring them in only when the enemy has been routed and the bigger threats still need to be caught then we can swoop in and take them out," Charley mused still studying the map.

"Yes, that might work. But we will need to hash this out with the one who is in charge of the forces and that be our own Kingsley Shackelbolt," Moody reminded.

"Aye, understood," Charley agreed.

For a bit they all remained silent as they studied the layout before them. In excellent detail they could make out their location, a castle well hidden since no one had ever seen it when flying over the area, the immense grounds that surrounded it, a strong brick building located in a far corner of the grounds was identified as a prison, another area was designated as a huge training field and gathering place for their army, Hogwarts was shown with Forbidden Forest between here and there, the city of London, the entirety of Europe, and even the Americas further west, the frozen north hadn't been ignored nor was Asia, Africa, the tropics, Australia, and New Zealand.

Overall it was the best world map any of them had seen before. And that wasn't all. The designers of this map had used glowing blue magical flags to show clearly where all the Light's forces were either waiting for the word to take down the enemy and where other, smaller hunting parties were already at work sweeping up the stray death eaters that were trying to escape. The enemies locations were designated by red glowing skulls.

"That is a perfect way to show us where the enemy is. Almost like they have a tracking spell on them," Lupin murmured, wondering if that was true.

"Wouldn't be surprised if they did," Moody harrumphed before he walked away heading toward the doorway they had all entered from and where a commotion was beginning.

Queerditch Marsh eight-forty a.m.

Snape appeared on the largest piece of land that wasn't soggy marsh. Madame Bones was already there along with a few of her people. More were arriving as he walked to her side. She turned her head and nodded at him.

"Good morning, Professor Snape. We're nearly all here ..." she watched as a group of four arrived. "...and that is it. Now we can group them up and get ready to leave," She then briskly began barking orders for all of her people to split into groups of ten and to hurry it up. There was a quick scrambling as the aurors did as ordered. With five minutes left they were finally ready.

At that moment, a Dwarf appeared beside Snape. That worthy nearly jumped in his skin at the sudden appearance but managed to catch himself before nodding politely at the arrival.

"Are you ready?" the Dwarf ground out, his manner abrupt and to the point as most of his kind were.

Bones heard him and hurried over to them. "Yes we are," she affirmed eyeing him warily.

The Dwarf nodded, made some kind of signal that made nine more Dwarves appear. "Pick a group, ready for transport. Go one group at a time for safety." The other Dwarves nodded and hurried off, each splitting off, each attaching themselves to a group of Aurors. While they did as ordered, the leader moved Snape and Bones to a group beside them then waited.

The Aurors themselves eyed the Dwarves nervously. They had only been told that these beings had invented a new device that allowed transport that hid where they were going and prevented them from transporting from the new location without a Dwarf and device. None of that had made any of them comfortable.

"Prepare!" the leader Dwarf barked out. "Dunan! Go!" Instantly a group at the rear disappeared. He only paused some five minutes before barking again, "Bamur! Go!" Another group disappeared. And in that fashion, the leader called out a Dwarf and a group vanished then it was their turn.

However, the leader didn't send them off. "Professor Snape, sir, I have been asked by Jason to give you a message before we transport." The Dwarf produced a small scroll and handed it to the surprised Potion's Master.

Frowning in confusion, Snape stepped away and unrolled the missive. "Severus. I hope you forgive this last minute change. The mystics among us have had a vision and it concerns you and what you are. They aren't certain why it is important, but the portents have strongly insisted that your heritage as a Blackfeather must needs be revealed to our allies at this meeting and that it is somehow strongly related to what Harry Potter's prophesy has said about his future that has you now entwined with his. I don't pretend to understand, my friend, why this one thing is so important but none, not even you, may gainsay such a powerful warning. So, though I understand this be a private secret of your clan, that secret must now be set aside and you must reveal. I think the best way is for you to appear here at headquarters then change to your Blackfeather form just after arrival. By my hand, Jason, Leader of the Elder Council."

Snape felt his face drain of color. The scroll snapped closed as he stood there in shock.

Frowning at Snape's suddenly stricken expression, Madame Bones walked quickly over to his side and murmured, "Professor Snape, are you alright? Is the news bad?"

He shook himself. "It's … not bad per se, just unexpected. We best be off. Questions will be answered when we arrive," he said, refusing to say more as he walked her back to the group. "Let's go Ramur," he told the Dwarf he had met many times before.

Ramur nodded then activated the device he held in his fist. All Snape felt was a sudden swooping sensation then everything came to an abrupt stop, their feet planted firmly on the floor of the transport room.

Elder Council Headquarters, transport chamber

"Wow! That was the most amazing transport I've ever experienced," Bones blurted as she tried to adjust from the sudden movement to stopping sensation. Around her, her agents were also shaking heads and exclaiming about the weirdness of it all.

"What did you think, Severus," Remur asked, anxious to hear what the wizard thought of this mode of travel.

Snape blinked a moment to get his bearings then nodded. "Actually, that was nearly as smooth as a house elf transport," he said honestly.

Ramur smiled broadly. "That be a compliment as an house elf transport is like nothing ever occurred except you be in one place then suddenly in the next. Thank you for testing this for us. It will be perfect for the more important meeting the council will have with the wizarding government."

"I dare say, the government officials will be remarkably shocked and amazed at this method of transport too. Best guard its secret with your lives so they don't steal it until you are ready to share," Snape warned.

Ramur smiled wickedly. "Have no fear of that. Now, you know where to go from here. I must away. Have many more tasks today." With that, Ramur hurried out the only door, past a huge Ogre guard and vanished from view.

Snape sighed. He needed to get a guide for Madame Bones and her group if he was to do what Jason had asked of him. "Dobby!" He called. The house elf appeared next to him.

"Glad to see all have arrived safely, Professor Snape. What you need from Dobby?"

"I've been asked to do something important but I need someone to escort this last group with Madame Bones to the command center. Would you do that for me please?"

"Of course, Professor Snape, be pleased to be of assistance. Madame Bones, and others, if you would follow me please," Dobby said, moving toward the door.

Madame Bones hung back and eyed Snape in confusion. Snape shook his head to head off her questions. Still not happy but not resisting she headed off after her group.

Now alone, Snape allowed his form to change. It was fortunate or deliberate, he never gave that a thought before, the ceilings were very high so he was able to take wing and fly to the command center without anyone really noticing him as he stayed very close to the ceiling mingling with all the other flying birds coming and going within the castle.

He hadn't gone far when he was joined by Fawkes. He turned a black eye toward the Phoenix in confusion.

"Thought appreciate you would if I accompanied you to your unveiling," Fawkes said.

"I don't understand the need to do this. Do you?" Snape asked in the same language.

"Nay, but do feel this is necessary. Strong is the rightness of it is which is all I am able to say." If the Phoenix could shrug he would have.

Snape let go a caw of dismay and a bit of unhappiness.

"Be not distressed my friend. All will be well," Fawkes soothed.

Snape couldn't say he agreed but didn't fight it as it seemed fate was against his desire for continuing his secrecy. This was going to be uncomfortable.

The pair flew down the staircase together.

Ahead of them all the members of the enforcement agency were now clustered beside the members of the Order of the Phoenix. They were standing in their own groups just before the council table.

Snape glanced over all that were there and noted that the full council was in attendance so he knew this was why Jason had asked him to appear now. He wasn't certain what he was supposed to do next.

"Stay in the air beside me until Jason announces you. Come circle above them with me," Fawkes instructed, winging closer to the group that still hadn't really looked up at them as they were still surrounded by a constantly moving blanket of owls, crows, ravens and a few other phoenixes. But Jason's eyes spotted them and nodded his head before turning his attention to those before him.

"Greetings to all our allies. I am Jason, Elder Council Leader." Standing beside him was Kingsley looking a bit uncomfortable at all the attention. "And this be my co-leader Kingsley Shackelbolt. Here be the full Council of Elders before you. Please raise an appendage when I call your name council members," he told those sitting behind him at the table except the centaurs, of course.

"Magorian leader of the Centaurs," the centaur snorted and raised his hand. "Apolline Delacour leader of the Veela and leader of my hunters." Her hand went up stiffly. Annis Black, the only Hag alive this century. She flowed to her feet, dressed all in black with a hood that hid her face then reseated herself beside Apolline. "Sanguini, leader of the vampires." The very thin, sallow looking being with huge eyes, raised a slim arm before lowering it again. All noted a wizard sat beside him but he wasn't introduced. "Blodrig the Boss-Eyed, spokesman for the Brotherhood of Goblins." The broad body, short statured (but not as short as Dwarves) being raised a thick, hairy arm before lowing it again on the table. "Blayrock, leader of the Dwarves." He didn't rise as he was sitting on a stool, but he did raise a thick arm half covered by a metal armband. "Tongra, leader of the Ogres." A huge creature as tall as Jason simply nodded from his stance that towered above the others. "Alier, spokesman for the few wood elves willing to be a part of our group." The beautiful creature with grass green eyes, gracefully lifted an arm before lowering it again. "And finally Fawkes, leader of all intelligent flying beings, house elves, Hippogriffs, and familiars." Fawkes trilled loudly as he flew from the ceiling down to take a perch on Jason's chair.

"I wish now to introduce someone who is not a member of the council but is a member of the people of the forest that you need to be aware of because he is also a member of your society. Severus, please join us now," Jason called. "I present Professor Severus Snape, a member of a nearly extinct and very rare avian species known as Blackfeather.

That was when Snape knew he was supposed to make an entrance. Cawing loudly, his large form swooped down from the ceiling, then glided slowly the table before landing on the only clear section of floor.

Dumbledore had gasped when he realized what was going to happen but said nothing as he watched his potion's master stand before them as a giant black bird. k

Everyone stared in fascination at the huge coal, black bird that resembled a giant crow. It stood some four feet tall, with a wingspan of some fifteen feet. The eyes that stared at them were red hued and piercing. Obvious intelligence shone from them. Its head was narrow and sported a very sharp, cream colored beak. Sharp talons graced the feet that were as black as its body. It cawed again, raised its wings and flapped them once causing a strong breeze that ruffled the papers on the table. Then without a sound or a warning it changed shape. Within seconds a man stood where the bird had been.

"Animagus!" Blurted from several throats that were outraged Snape had not been registered as such.

Snape shook his head emphatically. "No I am not an animagus. This is the natural form of a Blackfeather."

"Really? This is the first I've heard of a creature like yourself. Blackfeather, you say? Rare is an understatement. Very secretive your kind must be to have hidden your existence from all," Madame Bones commented, shaking her head.

"That's because the shapeshifting form doesn't exist in any family but my own, Madame Bones. It seems an ancestor of mine had a deep fascination for the little known creatures, which keep to themselves hence the fact no one knows much about them or have seen them except for Newt Scamander who had seen one because it is in his bestiary book. Now back to my ancestor, Larimor Snape. Because he became so enamored with this bird, he discovered some way to magically incorporate its DNA into his only son. It worked, obviously, except not as well as he probably hoped. The gene is very recessive, appearing only a few times within a hundred year period. Also knowledge of someone with the trait was kept a tightly held secret, not to be shared with anyone outside the family. It is not sex linked either but very few females have appeared since the 1700's. As for me, at the moment, it appears I am the first to be born since the 20th century began." Snape shrugged.

"Perhaps a search is in order to see if that be true," Jason mused.

"Yes, someone did mention doing such a search using computers." Snape nodded.

"I knew there was something odd about you," Moody jumped in, immensely pleased he had been right about something being amiss with Snape.

Snape couldn't help but smile. "Yes, you were right about me hiding something from you but until right this moment, you would have still been kept in the dark." The old Auror just snorted.

"Actually, I'm more interested in how the devil you can reappear with clothes on," Charley Weasley spoke up before anyone else could voice a question. "Because I know for a fact natural transformations aren't able to do that."

"You are correct Mr. Weasley which why I took the animagus class when I attended Hogwarts." Snape smirked. Charlie rolled his eyes realizing that, of course, would be the logical thing to do.

His mother, Molly's face held a sympathetic expression when she observed, "Oh, you must have changed when you reached puberty then. That must have been quite the shock, eh …. besides very embarrassing."

"That is an understatement. A more humiliating event I could not have ever fathomed happening on my thirteenth birthday. No, it was not a happy occurrence at all but it did cause my mother to suggest I take the animagus class for which I am eternally grateful."

"I just bet you were," Charley snorted. There was mild laughter that broke the shock factor and made people relax a bit.

"But why did you reveal yourself now of all times, Severus," Dumbledore finally was able to insert a question of his own.

"Apparently, I am now a part of a future that demands full transparency which meant my secret needed to be known at this time as changes begin to happen starting now. I'm told I play a major part in what is to come with Harry Potter. Beyond that I have no more knowledge than all of you so please don't ask me anymore about it," Snape said firmly.

"Now that Severus has done as asked and revealed his true nature, would you all please sit in the bleachers provided and we'll get this mission briefing started. I know you wish to end the enemy as quickly as we do so we must get to it," Jason announced loudly to get everyone's attention.

Though what had happened with Snape was extremely interesting they knew Jason was right. They all began to file toward the bleachers until all were seated except for Dumbledore and Madame Bones. They had been pulled aside to sit in chairs for them at the table with the council and Shackelbolt.

"I believe everyone at this table is familiar with who Headmaster Dumbledore and Madame Amelia Bones are so we might as well jump right into the mission briefing. Since you are the military leader here, Kingsley please go ahead," Jason said.

"Right, the first thing on the agenda is taking out the infiltrators within the Ministry of Magic's headquarters. Blodrig give us a status report on the progress of the identification of the enemy, please."

"It be completed. All infiltrators have been tagged by the house elves so when the word is given, they will snap them away to Tongra's prison guarded by his second in command, Odar who will be standing by to ensure all are secured," Blodrig responded briskly.

"Excellent. Who will be the contact when the word is given?"

"Jeg, leader of the house elves at the ministry. Once we tell him the mission is on, he will standby with Wizard Eric Munch who has been instrumental in helping with the identification. They will be waiting where Munch normally stands guard within the main entry point of the ministry," Blodrig answered.

"Good. Then the next thing we need to address is where our forces, that being Madame Bones' Aurors and Headmaster Dumbledore's Order, come into play. Obviously, we cannot be seen so we need to be able to get inside the Atrium but not be seen so we can ensure there are no escapes from our net. I have thought on this a great deal but haven't come to a method that would accomplish this," Shackelbolt admitted.

Fawkes suddenly trilled out. "Chair recognizes Council member Fawkes," Jason said.

Rare it was a familiar spoke to others but this moment was critical and a miscommunication now could be disastrous so Fawkes opened his mind to all to the shock of the allies in the room but not to the council.

"Gentle beings listen closely. This type of communication is taxing so cannot spend time repeating. Jeg and I have spoken. He states enough elves has he that are willing to use their magic to hide all those who will be in the Atrium and small lift hallway within the ministry building. Spell cannot stay up more than thirty minutes but that be long enough to complete this mission. Agree?"

"Wow! That should work well if all goes as planned," Madam Bones said after a moment's stunned surprise.

"It sounds like a good plan but I do have one question, how many can the elves shield safely without strain," Dumbledore asked.

"Told I am that maximum number be twenty," Fawkes responded.

"But the Atrium is huge and traffic is nearly endless during the work day, the lifts going constantly, where are we to be stationed to watch for any that are our targets and did everyone get a list of the targets, yet?" Madame Bones asked.

"Yes, we have the list of targets and here's where you and Headmaster Dumbledore come in," Shackelbolt responded. "Each of the twenty selected, which I know will include you and Headmaster Dumbledore, must select those who are going on this mission. I have been told, the house elves will have already collected the criminals." There was a confused mutter among those involved but Shackelbolt pushed on before any could speak.

"Wait now … Your presence is insurance against any that might escape the net though the chance of that is very small. It may be you will only be there for less than fifteen minutes before Jeg tells you all the prisoners are accounted for. As for the positions you will take within the Atrium, that would be right near every fireplace floo and the hallway entry to the lifts."

Madam Bones was relieved as she nodded her understanding. Dumbledore did the same. This was a good plan, especially if the elves caught everyone within the first few minutes of the mission's implementation.

"Then I have only one other question. As huge as the ministry is are we certain all will be taken especially if some of the targets have gone into the lower areas where much magic is stored? That is a lot of power the enemy could use against us," Bones cautioned.

"Yes, if enemy were allowed to move below where power be, but Jeg will carefully close that area without the enemy realizing they cannot travel there when order is given. But they will eventually catch on so moving quickly is what we must do when mission begins," Fawkes warned.

"Excellent! That is what we will do. I'll leave the selection and placement of those who are going, to their appropriate leaders. Meanwhile, Munch will be standing by with Blodrig at his side to ensure you all manage to enter without delay. The rest of our forces should only require about ten near the entrance and the rest scattered around the exterior mixing with the unaware populace. But because this could go so quickly not much more needs to be done. Even the outer forces will be confined to about twenty mixed individuals: the rest of your people, goblins, and Veela. While your forces are at the ministry, my forces will be standing by to immediately go after any person Jeg and Munch tells us hasn't appeared. Most all ministry employees have been observed going to work consistently and being present on time. Perhaps to avoid being noticed by your Aurors, Madame Bones. But whatever their reasons they have been doing their best to stay under our radar or so they think," Shackelbolt explained, a sinister smile pulled at his mouth. "So we might not have any "stay at homes" but as you heard we have a plan to manage that."

"Just one more question, Kingsley, where might you be during this mission," Madame Bones asked. "And who is in charge at the ministry?"

"I intend to remain here with Jason to continue coordinating our forces that are still out hunting stray death eaters and those monitoring the army. I'm detailing Apolline to be the on site contact at the outer ring and keeping in touch with us here during the mission.

You and Headmaster Dumbledore are responsible for only your own people while Apolline is responsible for her forces. Though she also is our contact with you all so you must make sure you all remain in communication the whole time. Annis' crows will be responsible for that part of the mission. Thank you for bringing this up, Madame Bones. I nearly forgot that part and it's the most important one," Shackelbolt said with a shake of his head.

"You're welcome but I want clarity on one thing more. You said twenty so that must mean Dumbledore and I must chose ten from each of our groups, correct?

Shackelbolt nodded. "That is correct, Madame Bones. "And the rest will be with the outer protective ring. And here is where I should have been more clear, those people will answer to Apolline not you so there will be no confusion. Has that answered everything?"

"Yes, I believe it has answered mine, headmaster?" She looked over to Dumbledore. He just nodded his agreement. "This is why it is good to have a decent briefing so no lingering programs bites us later," She said, giving Shacklebolt a small smile.

"Right you are. Now if there are no more questions, the plan is set for tomorrow morning at seven am, mustering here at headquarters. Transporting will start promptly at seven thirty so we are in place before the employees begin arriving for their work day," Shackelbolt commanded. "Problems?"

Shaking heads or murmurs of "no" was his answer.

"I do have one more thing to add," Shacklebolt said effectively silencing everyone. "I strongly recommend everyone remain here at our headquarters rather than return home. This will minimize exposure of our actions to those outside this room, also so we don't have to muster everyone again. We do have accommodations to handle all who stay."

"I have no objections and you are right that would make more sense to wait here," Madame Bones said after a moments though. "Besides, being here will make those at the ministry even more confused and worried as to what or where we have gone. Works for me."

"I too find no difficulties with that suggestion, Kingsley. I have already ensured the school is manned and being capably managed by my second in command. It will be able to do without my people for the duration of this mission," Dumbledore added his own agreement.

"Excellent! Jason has something to say," Shackelbolt said, deferring to Jason who stood again to speak.

"Please enjoy your stay here, get familiar with our people more, wander where you wish and more importantly, get lots of rest. Lunch is about to be served. Also, if you do need to return home, please ensure that you notify I or Kingsley so we can keep track of where everyone is when it's time to go," Jason instructed.

"Thank you for your hospitality. Does that extend to all briefings of the council and strategy meetings," Dumbledore asked wanting to know what the limits of their freedom here truly was.

"Of course, sir. You are our allies and keeping secrets at this juncture would be counterproductive, don't you think?" Jason said.

"I agree and I too thank you for your hospitality," Madame Bones said.

"Good, then my house elves will guide you to your quarters, you have only to call on one of them. If there are anymore questions …." Jason paused and looked at everyone and seeing no one respond, he finished, "excellent, then I invite Headmaster Dumbledore and Madame Bones to sup with me tonight. Of course any others you wish to have with you are also invited."

"It will be my pleasure," Madame Bones said, giving a quick bob of her head.

"And mine as well," Dumbledore also dipped his head.

Smiling, Jason turned back to the council table as did Shackelbolt while everyone else quietly dispersed.

Though he wanted to watch what was happening in the field and what else might be discussed, Dumbledore decided to gather his people first and have a small briefing on what was expected of them today and the mission tomorrow.

"If my people will please gather around me, I have a few important things to say before letting you freely wander," he announced. The Order quickly pulled together until they circled the headmaster.

"Alright then, as you heard only ten of us will be in the inner circle. They will be myself, of course, Black, Moody, the Weasleys, Lupin, and Tonks. Tomorrow, I want you to report right here at six-forty-five so we may transport together in a group. If necessary, use a house elf to be on time. Once we arrive, remain together until Madame Bones, Apolline and I get a quick lay of the land then send you to your places, understood?" Heads nodded.

"Excuse me, Albus but where is Snape going to be?" Black asked, eyeing the man in question.

"Ah, yes, I've been informed our Potion's Master will be going with Apolline's group as aerial recognizance," Dumbledore said with a bit of a smile.

"Oh, well I guess that makes a lot of sense, him being a bird and all," Black snorted. There was a brief spate of laughter, Snape smiling just a little showing he hadn't taken offense, before Dumbledore continued with his briefing.

"I'm sure you all realize how important this opportunity is for the Order to have a chance to learn more about the people of the forest. That being said, I want you to learn all you can and be polite. It wouldn't hurt to make friends as well as these people will become fully involved in our world soon enough and it behooves us to let them know us as we learn about them so we can remain allies into whatever the future holds for us. Now, off with you," Dumbledore said making a shooing motion.

Most snorted with amusement and others with just a bit of trepidation, went off in different directions following whatever their interests were. For Snape, Moody, and Dumbledore it was returning to the council table.

Meanwhile, Madame Bones also decided this was something she needed to do as well.

"Will my people please follow me to that section of the room for a quick briefing," she said leading the way to a more quiet section of the room.

She made nearly a similar speech to her people, selected ten people for the inner circle then added this the proviso before she released them. "Do not show any bigotry with our hosts no matter what your true feelings might be. These are our allies not just during this mission but for the foreseeable future so it behooves all of you to learn to dump old prejudices and try to be friends if possible. Now go off and see what you can see, insure you get food and rest, and report here by six-thirty tomorrow morning. If you're too far away then call a house elf for quick transport. Upon arrival, remain together until I, Apolline and Professor Dumbledore get a quick lay of the land then send you to your places, understood?" Heads nodded. "No time must be wasted for this mission to be successful. Now go enjoy yourself." Not waiting for questions or objections, she made for the council table.

Her people sighed, looked around then slowly went off in groups of three or four.
