Chapter 21 – The Power of One Part 5

Lapras transitioned from the frozen ocean onto the frozen ground of Ice Island, her speed slowing slightly on the rougher surface. Ash returned Ivysaur to his Poké Ball once he realised Lapras could manoeuvre far more freely on the rough terrain. He ordered his Pokémon to follow the same mushroom-shaped pylons they'd seen on the other islands.

Ash scoured the island, noticing the massive mountain in its centre, before pointing towards a small cave at its base. "In there, that must be the way!" Noticing that the cave travelled straight up, Ash figured that the island's shrine must have been high above the clouds at the peak of the mountain.

Lapras felt the icy ground give way to the rough surface of the cave. Both trainer and Pokémon knew this was bad, but Lapras was the first to react. Firing an Ice Beam directly in front of herself, Lapras maintained her momentum as they made their way up the mountain.

The cave turned left and right and occasionally dipped before continuing to rise at a steady pace. Before long, Ash, Pikachu, and Lapras found themselves crossing a small bridge covered in ice that signalled the halfway point of the climb. But there was no slowing down as they quickly raced into the last section of the cave.

Eventually, a light appeared ahead, and Ash knew they had reached the top of the mountain. For a moment, he wondered what it would have been like to climb the mountain on foot, especially if the ceremony had gone as planned. But he had a job to do, and he didn't need to worry about anything that wouldn't come to pass.

Shooting through the exit, Lapras came to a sliding halt at the top of the mountain. Dismounting Lapras' shell, Ash thanked the Pokémon. He wanted to return her to her Poké Ball but figured he would need her for the trip back. He wished he could give his Pokémon a break, especially after everything she had done, but with the chance they would need to make a quick exit, he needed Lapras outside her Poké Ball.

Looking around, Ash noticed Articuno's shrine sat atop an ice-covered staircase. Running up it, he raced towards the small shrine. Like everything else, it too was covered in ice. He briefly studied the same stone pillars and arches of the other shrines, with a statue of Articuno holding the Ice Orb in its beak.

Grabbing the orb, Ash struggled to pull it from its confides. He remembered that the Fire Orb had been wedged into the Pokémon's statue in the same manner. But eventually, with several tugs, he was able to pull the orb free.

Just like the others, the bluish-white crystal-clear orb glowed with energy in his hands. Mesmerised, he failed to take his eyes off the orb as he had done with the others. Had Pikachu not taken that moment to yell at his trainer, Ash would have continued to stare at it, as if hypnotised by its essence.

"You're right," Ash agreed, placing the orb in his jacket pocket. "We have to get this back to Shamouti Island. There's no time to waste." They raced down the stairs, preparing to climb onto Lapras, when suddenly Articuno appeared above them, flying directly for them as if it could sense the orb had been taken.

Ash reacted swiftly. Clutching Lapras' Poké Ball, he returned the Pokémon as a beam of ice nearly collected the Pokémon. He turned and ran towards the cave, knowing it would be the only haven from any onslaught the legendary bird could bring.

But he would fail to reach it as Zapdos fired off streams of lightning that blocked the cave entrance. Moltres followed, melting the rocks with its blazing fire to seal the entrance for good.

Ash knew there would be no escape as Articuno turned on Moltres, smashing it with a powerful Ice Beam. Zapdos followed, shocking the ice-type legendary with its powerful electricity.

Articuno crashed down onto the peak of the mountain, exhausted from the super-effective attack. Moltres retaliated, firing off a flurry of flames at the downed Pokémon that ultimately knocked it out.

As Articuno came to a grinding halt next to its shrine, Pikachu raced un the side of the mountain, directing Ash to follow him. Without any other options, Ash followed his Pokémon, quickly climbing up over the peak.

The mountainside wasn't as steep as they had anticipated, allowing Ash and Pikachu to run down it safely. Despite the slope, Ash wasn't willing to risk riding down on Lapras' back; they would never be able to tell if there was a cliff in front of them with the speed the Pokémon would reach.

As they ran down the mountain, Lugia suddenly appeared beside them. "The treasure?" he questioned.

"I got it," Ash replied, pulling out the orb to show the Pokémon.

Flying close, Lugia leaned to one side and lowered his neck, allowing access to his back. "Get on," he instructed.

Ash placed the orb back in his pocket before instructing Pikachu to climb onto his shoulder. With his Pokémon, he climbed onto Lugia white neck. Lugia flapped his wings, rising into the air, carrying Ash with him.

Suddenly clear of the mountain, he dived beneath the clouds and flew away from Ice Island, heading straight for Shamouti Island. Moltres and Zapdos gave chase, targeting Lugia with everything they had.

Lugia banked left and right, dodging attack after attack from the two remaining legendary birds. Lugia quickly banked upwards, flying high into the sky. "Hold on tight," he ordered as he suddenly changed direction, dodging a powerful burst of flames.

Lugia flew close to the surface at lightning speed, drawing further away from the legendary birds. With Lugia now out of reach, Zapdos and Moltres turned on each other.

As Lugia flew close to the surface, Ash noticed the countless Pokémon standing on the ice-covered ocean. "Lugia, why are all those Pokémon down there?"

"Because they feel they must be here in case they are needed," Lugia explained.

"But what could they do to help?"

"They are not sure, and that is why they are here."

"What do you mean?"

"That if just one Pokémon could help the world, it would be worth the journey for thousands of them any day," Lugia explained. "But this day, the one that can make all the difference is you."

Ash nodded, understanding what Lugia meant. Strangely, the trip back to Shamouti Island was far calmer than the journey to Ice Island. Ash guessed that it had something to do with the legendary birds being too focused on each other to attack them.

But just as they were about to reach Shamouti Island, a shot rang out across the small archipelago. Four capture rings whizzed through the air towards Lugia after being fired from Lawrence's downed ship on Electric Island.

Lugia took evasive action but was unable to avoid the triangular rings. Surrounded, the legendary Pokémon attempted to raise a barrier, but the electrical shocks from the rings proved too much for it.

"Soon, Lugia, you will be mine," Lawrence stated as he watched the events unfold through his advanced telescope. "And my destiny will be fulfilled at last."

Pain from the electric shocks shot through Ash, Pikachu, and Lugia. Lugia flailed wildly from the pain while Ash and Pikachu attempted to hold on. Unable to control himself, Lugia crashed into the frozen ocean. He flapped his wings underneath the water, attempting to correct himself.

Once in control, he guided himself back above the ocean surface, where he turned his rage on his attacker. Opening his mouth, a ball of yellow-coloured energy formed. Lugia eyed his target for a second before unleashing the full devastating power of his Hyper Beam.

Several small beams shot forth from his mouth before forming one powerful beam that split the ice beneath it. The powerful beam raced towards Electric Island, where Lawrence could only watch as what remained of his ship was sliced in half.

Lugia turned upwards, the four rings now encompassing his body, preventing him from flying further. In an attempt to release the remaining power of his beam, Lugia fired a shot straight upwards before the pain from the capture rings became too strong.

His head flailed wildly, the Hyper Beam waving dangerously through the clouds. Not even Moltres and Zapdos were able to escape the onslaught, the beam grazing them. Unable to fight any more, Lugia began to dive towards the ocean, but not before the last remaining remnants of his attack shattered the ice below.

Ash fell unconsciously towards the ocean, releasing his grip on Lugia as they hit the ocean. While Lugia continued to dive deeper into the ocean, Ash and Pikachu slowly rose to the surface.

"Pika!" Pikachu gasped as he surfaced before turning towards his trainer. "Pika, pika," the Pokémon said, attempting to awaken his trainer. But it was no use; Ash wasn't responding.

"I... Have failed," Lugia sadly muttered before falling into unconsciousness.

Misty, Melody, and Tracey watched the events unfold in horror, the weather picking up just as Lugia sunk into the ocean. "Here, take this," Melody suddenly said, handing her ocarina to Misty.

"Huh?" Misty questioned, looking at the item.

"Legend or not, Ash can't do this alone," Melody explained.

Both girls eyed each other for a brief moment before Misty shook her head. "You'll have to play Lugia's song," Misty explained, pushing the ocarina back towards Melody. "I'll go look for him. And Ash is never really alone because he's got me."

Melody nodded, a small smile forming on her face. Both girls clasped their hands together before Misty turned towards the track that led down the cliff.

Misty grabbed a rope from the destroyed yacht before tying it around herself. She knew she wouldn't be able to carry Ash back to shore, especially with the violent and chaotic waves pushing and jutting them.

She wasn't sure if she would even make it to him, but she knew she was the best swimmer amongst her friends; if she couldn't do it, then no one could. She handed the other end to Tracey. "When I tug on the rope three times, pull us back to shore," she ordered before diving into the water.

"Ash!" She called as she swam out into the ocean.

"Pika!" Pikachu called, drawing her attention. She began to swim towards the Pokémon's voice, who continued to call out for help. "Pikachupi!" the Pokémon excitedly called when he laid his eyes on his trainer's friend.

"Pikachu, just hang on!" Misty called out as she approached. She grabbed onto Ash as the Pokémon clung to her. She turned back towards the island and pulled on the rope three times.

Tracey responded, immediately pulling the rope, slowly dragging them back to shore.

Misty eyed Ash carefully, realising he was completely unresponsive. With the constant rocking of the waves, she could not tell if he was breathing, but her concern for her friend grew nonetheless.

Finally, once they reached the shore, Tracey pulled Ash onto solid ground. "Ash?" he questioned.

Misty crawled on all fours, stopping briefly to catch her breath before turning towards Ash. With water dripping onto her face, she rose to her feet and untied the rope from around her waist. She slowly walked towards her friend before slumping to her knees next to him.

"Come on, Ash, breath!" she pleaded, her worst fears recognised. She only knew a little about C.P.R., and she wasn't sure if it would work. Balling her hands into a fist over his chest, she began to pump. But she wasn't sure if she was applying enough force or how many times she needed to pump before she breathed into his mouth. "Please, Ash! Please!"

She closed her eyes, losing count of how many times she had pumped his chest, when suddenly her hands, and Ash's chest, briefly glowed. Tracey gasped, watching as the glow shot through Ash like a lightning bolt. However, Misty failed to notice it.

Ash's eyes shot open, and he gasped, quickly rising to a seated position. He looked around, confused, before his eyes landed on Misty.

"Ash!" Misty cried, wrapping her arms around him.

"Huh?" Ash quickly shrugged off Misty, reaching into his pocket. "The sphere!" He slowly staggered to his feet, nearly falling over in his weakened state.

"Ash?" Misty questioned.

Ash took one step towards the stairs before nearly collapsing. Tracey grabbed hold of him to prevent him from falling, but Ash quickly shrugged him off. "Let me go, I gotta do this," he stated, declining any assistance from Misty or Tracey, before making his way up the stairs that led to the shrine.

Ash slowly made his way up the stairs, with Misty and Tracey following closely behind. Halfway up the stairs, he collapsed again. Misty and Tracey raced up to help him, but he again pushed them away, using what remaining strength he had to right himself.

One step at a time, he slowly approached the top, stopping briefly to catch his breath. Once he sucked in enough air, he ran towards the shrine, ignoring the pain shooting through him.

"Huh!" Slowking gasped, standing next to Melody at the centre of the shine.

"He made it!" Melody smiled as he approached.

"Have you brought the final treasure, Ash?" Slowking questioned as Ash stopped in front of them.

"Here it is, Slowking," Ash stated, holding up the ice orb.

"You must be the one to place it," Slowking explained, pointing towards the monument at the top of the stairs.

Ash quickly raced up the stairs, pausing briefly to look out towards the three islands. The storm had gotten worse, with countless tornados wreaking havoc, and he only hoped that what he was doing would fix it.

As he approached the monument, his eyes fixated on the pedestal where he was to place the ice orb. Holding the orb in his hand, he briefly studied its glow before placing it on its pedestal.

He took a few steps back, watching the three orbs, waiting for something to occur. For a moment, the energy of the three orbs echoed inside the monument before they unleashed beams of red, blue, and yellow light in all directions.

The three colours merged into one, a wall of green energy forming at the monument's opening. Ash's eyes became fixated on the energy as the same green glow pulsated from the shrine around them, blowing the ice away. Misty, Melody, Tracey, and Slowking all looked downwards in amazement as the glow disappeared.

Suddenly, green-coloured water flowed from beneath the monument, the water following the groves of the shrine. The water raced towards the mushroom-shaped pylons and quickly flowed up them, encasing them before the glow faded, turning the rock into a crystalline structure.

None of them had any idea what was going on, but Melody felt it was her turn to fulfill her duty.

"The song," Misty noted, coming to the same conclusion.

Melody nodded and ran up the stairs. She stopped in front of the glowing monument and briefly looked at Ash before raising her ocarina to her mouth. A soothing tune rang out across the shrine from the ocarina.

The crystalised pylons reacted to the sounds, each one illuminating in a faint green glow to a different tone. As the tune danced from one note to the next, so did the pylons, which echoed the tune across the small archipelago.

Zapdos and Moltres, who were laying battered on the ground from their battle, were the first to hear the song's serene melody. They both looked towards Shamouti Island, the rage in their eyes long gone.

At the peak of the mountain on Electric Island, Articuno awoke from its slumber. Slowly, it also rose and looked towards Shamouti Island.

The wild weather around the islands began to calm, and light began to shine in through the clouds as if the song had soothed the power that was fuelling it.

Melody continued playing in front of the monument while the others watched on from the cliff face. Ash, Misty, and Tracey jumped in surprise as the glowing water flowed past them, rushing straight off the cliff, while Slowking simply glanced down in wonder.

The glowing green water poured over the cliff and into the water below. Instantly, something below the water reacted, the ocean transforming with the green glow. The energy flowed across the ocean between the three elemental islands and Shamouti Island. The ice melted away almost instantly; the glowing greenish-blue ocean was all that remained.

Moltres and Zapdos rose onto their legs and quickly flapped their wings, rising into the air as they cawed. Shortly after, Articuno joined them, and the three began circling each other, their caws echoing across the islands.

Suddenly, Lugia rose from beneath the ocean within a vortex. The column of water shattered, and Lugia's powerful voice echoed the same song across the islands. The clouds faded above them, freeing the sunlight to rain down upon them.

The water flowing from the shrine ceased as Ash, Misty, Tracey, and Slowking watched in wonder. The glow in the ocean slowly began to fade, the energy dissipating, but Melody's tune remained, the crystalised pylons still echoing the song.

Lugia flew down to the shrine, landing in front of three trainers. He gestured to his back, indicating that the boy should climb onto it. Ash pointed to himself, questioning if Lugia was referring to him. Lugia simply nodded in confirmation.

Gleefully, Pikachu climbed up Ash's arm before the young boy rushed to Lugia's side and clambered onto the legendary Pokémon back. Lugia's blue backplates folded outwards as the Pokémon took off, rapidly flapping his wings. Ash smiled as they rose into the air.

As Melody continued to focus on the song, Misty and Tracey watched Ash ride Lugia around the islands in amazement. Suddenly, the deep ocean current rose out of the sea, mesmerising all those that witnessed it.

Lawrence, who stood inside his destroyed airship, gasped as the current flowed above him. He couldn't believe his eyes, but he knew his plans to capture Lugia had failed. Albeit he was still in line to be paid by his client, he had done what he had been asked to do.

A calm Moltres, Articuno, and Zapdos flew next to Lugia as the Pokémon below began to clear out; the job was done, and they knew they weren't needed anymore. Ash watched the Pokémon below when a thought suddenly came to his mind.

"Hey, Lugia?" he questioned.

"Yes?" Lugia tilted his head back, indicating he was listening.

"You mentioned that the Pokémon below had travelled all the way here in case they were needed," Ash continued. "But today, I was the one that could save the day. It's got me wondering, the title of 'Chosen One,' I've been called it before."

"Oh? By whom?"

"Mew," Ash explained. "I travelled with her briefly, and she called me it."

"Figures," Lugia replied. "Mew had always been a bit blasé on the rules and etiquette of the legendary Pokémon."

"What's that supposed to mean?" Ash annoyingly questioned. "Are you telling me that all the legendary Pokémon know of my title and aren't meant to tell me?"

"Yes," Lugia confirmed. "But what fate will behold you, what crisis you will be needed for, no one knows. Your journey as a Chosen One may end here, today, or there may be another crisis where you are needed. I had no idea until today that you were the Chosen One of this prophecy."

"So you know I am destined to be needed to help the world, but you don't know when, where or why?"

"Correct," Lugia agreed. "But perhaps 'needed' is not the right word. It is rather, as a Chosen One, that it is your right to choose the fate of this world. You had the choice to help me right the wrongs and fix the damage to the ecosystem or simply walk away and allow natural events to carry on."

"But what kind of choice is that?" Ash retorted. "If I had walked away, everything would have been in ruins."

"Perhaps. Perhaps not," Lugia argued."It is impossible to tell what would have come after today if you didn't act. For all we know, the ecosystem could have entered a new balance, whereby the climate across the planet may have shifted for the better or the worse."

As Melody continued to play at the shrine, a similar question that had irked Tracey bubbled its way into his head. After quickly glancing at the three legendary elemental birds, he turned towards the person, or rather, Pokémon that could help him.

"Slowking," Tracey said, drawing the Pokémon's attention. "Moltres, Zapdos, and Articuno. Those three appear to be larger than the normal legendary birds. Not that I've ever seen one, but I've ready up about them in books and seen photos."

"They are," Slowking confirmed. "They are Primals."

"Primals?" Misty questioned.

"Another way of explaining it would be that they are the apex or alphas of their species," Slowking explained. "It is the same with Lugia. He is the Primal of the Lugia species, the strongest of their kind. All legendary Pokémon have a Primal that sits above the rest, and while some have a form they can transform into, most Primals are simply larger than others of their kind."

"But they can be defeated by others of their kind, can't they?" Tracey questioned, intrigued by the answer he'd received. "They aren't the strongest forever."

"Of course they can," Slowking confirmed. "But the Primal has a special role to play in this world, just like Lugia, Moltres, Zapdos, and Articuno before us. The three spheres that power this shrine are connected to the three legendary birds. They are forced to slumber here to maintain the ecosystem. They have not been challenged in millennia because others of their kind do not wish to be trapped here."

Lugia turned towards Shamouti Island as the song slowly came to an end. The ocean current fell back into the sea, and the three legendary birds returned to their respective islands to slumber once again.

As the final notes drew close, the mushroom-shaped pylons lost their crystalline structure, returning to their rocky form. Melody blew the last note before opening her eyes to stare at the shrine. She collapsed onto her knees in stunned silence and looked at her ocarina, unable to fathom everything that had happened. Silently, she smiled, clutching the ocarina to her chest.

Across the globe, the weather returned to its normal patterns as quickly as it had shifted earlier, stunning people. Meanwhile, Lugia landed in front of the shrine, dropping off Ash and Pikachu.

Lugia bellowed out his tune one last time as he rose, flapping his wings to remain hovered over the shrine. "The beast of the sea has been tamed," he explained. "The fate of the world could not have been in better hands." He quickly flapped his wings, rising high above the island before turning and diving into the ocean below.

Ash, Misty, Melody, and Tracey all stared out across the ocean, the dusking sun illuminating the ocean in a serene blue and pink.

"Ash! Ash!" Delia called, drawing the young trainer's attention.

Ash watched as his mother climbed down a small rock face behind the shrine, Professor Oak slightly above her. "It's my mum!" he exclaimed, confused by her sudden appearance on the island.

Delia raced over, running through the shrine before she came to a stop in front of Ash, her face pouring with anger. "Alright, start talking!" she angrily demanded, resting her hands on her hips disapprovingly. "You are in big trouble, mister!"

Ash had no idea what he'd done wrong, and he was about to defend himself when Misty came to his aid.

"But, Mrs Ketchum, Ash just helped save the whole world," Misty argued.

"Oh, he did, did he?" Delia replied, still angry. Ash had expected her to continue to scold him, but her demeanour quickly changed to one of concern. "Well, I could have lost my whole world."

"Huh?" Ash was stunned by her declaration. He hadn't expected her to react like that, and he had no idea how to respond.

"Every day, I worry about you and wonder if you're alright," Delia continued, her eyes beginning to water from all the emotions rushing through her. "I know I can't stop you from doing the things you need to do. I just can't help missing you all the time. You're a Pokémon Trainer, exactly like your father, and that's just how it is. But next time, could you try to save the world just a little closer to home?"

Ash looked down, unable to look his mother in the eye. "I guess I could give it a try," he said, but they both knew it would be a lie.

"And remember," Delia added, a smile appearing on her face. "Every day, you're my hero."

Ash looked at her briefly, completely stunned, before a smile appeared on his face, matching his mother's. "Thanks, mum."

Everyone around them smiled; it had been a long exhausting day, and finally, they would be able to rest. They turned to leave when Ash noticed a small rock still inside his jacket pocket. He pulled it out, noticing the faint glow it still held from the energy it had absorbed from the shrine.

"Say, Ash?" Professor Oak questioned, pulling the young boy from his thoughts. "Would you mind if I have a look at that?"

"Not at all, Professor," Ash replied, handing the rock to the older man.

"If it's alright with you, I wish to study this rock."

"I have no issue with it." Ash shrugged. "What's so interesting about it?"

"Oh nothing, really," Professor Oak lied. He had a fair idea what the rock was, what the shrine was made out of, but he had to be certain. "It's just that with everything we've witnessed, I can't help but remember witnessing something similar years ago."

"Then, by all means." Ash nodded. "I have no use for it."

The moon rose into the sky over Lawrence's downed ship. The lone occupant searched valiantly through the wreckage for the one item he wanted. Finally, after searching for hours, he found it; a rare Mew card.

"How it all began," Lawrence the Third stated, picking up the card. "And how it will begin, again."

Far away, hidden beneath the Indigo Plateau, another man quietly searched through the ruins of the Pokémon G-Men Headquarters. He had been digging for hours, slowly making his way towards the vault underneath the ruined building.

In one hand, he held the glowing egg he had stolen weeks earlier, the same egg that was now reacting to the dramatic climate shifts the planet was currently undergoing. "Just as I had thought," the man pondered aloud, the egg illuminating his path.

He continued to dig deeper until a small opening appeared. Crawling through the opening, he found a small crevasse that housed a large round metal door. A five-spoke handle protruded from the vault that was opened using the two massive hinges on one side. The man couldn't believe it was the same type of vault as the one he'd opened weeks earlier.

Pulling out a Poké Ball, he summoned his Lucario, the one Pokémon he knew would be able to break it down. "This one doesn't have a protective shield," he explained.

The Pokémon nodded and drew back its paws. Several spheres were fired at the vault, their power smashing into the hinges and locking mechanising. The man then released his Gardevoir, who he ordered to pull the door down.

Using its psychic abilities, the Gardevoir could unlock the vault from the inside and pull the door from its socket. The large round metal door crashed into the ground with a loud thud, revealing a large chamber behind it.

The man entered the chamber with his two Pokémon in toe, determined to find the item he'd searched so long for. He waded past several items he had no interest in, including several small chips located behind a piece of glass. Walking past several devices lined on pedestals, he hovered the glowing egg over each item, waiting for it to react.

Stopping at the opposite end of the room, the man hovered the egg over the solid case sealed behind a glass cabinet. The egg reacted, glowing brighter as he passed the egg over it.

Handing the egg to Lucario, the man summoned a small amount of energy from his hand and shattered the glass. After brushing the broken pieces away, the man picked up the case and studied it. It was no different than a regular briefcase, with two small latches locking the contents inside, and the man presumed the G-Men had thought that no one would ever be able to reach it.

He flipped the two latches, unlocking the case. As he opened it, his eyes were filled with the glow of eight crystals shaped distinctively like the original eight gym badges of the Kanto Pokémon League.

"Finally." He sighed. "After so long, I've found you."

"Who's there!"

The man turned around, his eyes landing on Red and his Charizard at the entrance. Red's face flushing at the sight of the man.

"It… It can't be," Red said in complete shock. "You're supposed to be dead."

The man didn't reply. Instead, he turned to his Gardevoir and nodded. In a flash, he was gone. His Pokémon, the egg, the badges, they were all gone.
