Authors Note:
YAYYY I'm finally back with another chapter. I've been rather busy with exams as well as a really important festival that lasted a week, so yea.
Anyway, I'm back. Sadly, this chapter is kinda short (just over 2000 words), but I wasn't sure what else I could add without making it boring and monotonous. Hope y'all enjoy this anyway.
Please remember to review, favorite, and follow if you like the story.
Anyway, let's get on with the story!
July 31st, 2000 - Dumbledore's office, Hogwarts
Dumbledore was sitting in his study, preparing the last of the letters he would have to send to children with magical capabilities. "Hannah Abbott, Neville Longbottom, Draco Malfoy," He muttered to himself, crossing out the names of those he had already delivered letters to. As he was going through the list once more, he realized with a start that he had forgotten to write the letter for Perseus Jackson.
Percy's name had been on the list ever since he had been born, which had come as a surprise to Dumbledore due to the fact that Sally Jackson had dropped off the magical grid months before he was born. He knew Sally had her reasons for going into hiding and hadn't bothered to find her earlier, but he realized now was the right time to do so. Her son had to be trained in magic.
"Fawkes," Dumbledore called. A bright flash of crimson fire appeared in the air, and Dumbledore's phoenix appeared from inside the blaze. "I need you to go find Sally Jackson," Dumbledore instructed the phoenix. "It is of vital importance that her son attends Hogwarts." In another burst of fire, Fawkes disappeared from the room, as Dumbledore started writing his letter to Percy.
Using his magical tracking and senses, Fawkes reappeared on the 6th floor of a small apartment in the heart of Manhattan. Looking through the open window, he made a happy sound as he realized Sally and Percy were at home. In another second, he had disappeared, ready to tell Dumbledore of his findings.
"Back so soon?" Dumbledore asked with a smile, as Fawkes flashed into his office. Fawkes cooed in affirmant. "Take me to them. We have a lot to discuss."
Fawkes held out his wrists for Dumbledore to grab, as the two of them disappeared again.
Me: "Ok, umm...Mr. Teleporter? Are you here?"
Time Skip Sr: *appears in front of me* "Ha' I'm back!"
Me: "Seriously?" *looks annoyed* "Can you bring Junior back please?"
Time Skip SR. "Nah, maybe next time"
Me: "All right fine, just take me to New York damn it"
Time Skip SR: "Please insert a dollar"
Me: "REALLY? YOU'RE MAKING ME PAY YOU THAT MUCH?" *passes 50 cents*
Time Skip SR: "Ok fine, 50 is ok this time," *flicks wrist* "Cya later"
July 31st 2000 - New York, Sally's apartment
It was July 31st. Percy's 11th birthday. In the kitchen, Sally Jackson was busy preparing a special breakfast for her son. She had once again made blue pancakes, as well as another batch of Percy's favorite blue chocolate chip cookies. Aside from all that, she had even baked him a cake for his birthday. Naturally, the cake was all blue as well.
"Hey Percy," she called from the kitchen. "It's your big day, get up!" She received no reply. Laughing at her son's laziness, she put down the platter of cookies and walked into his room. "Wake up, honey," She said, shaking him. Percy grumbled, but finally got up and pulled the sheets off of himself.
"Come on Percy," Sally Jackson said. "Don't you remember what day it is?" Slowly realization dawned on Percy, whose eyes widened excitedly. "That's right," Sally said. "Happy birthday Percy."
Percy was instantly wide awake. He had been waiting so impatiently for this day to come. For him, it wasn't the fact that it was his birthday that made him happy. He was honestly more excited about the fact that his mother would finally be explaining all these weird mishaps to him.
"MOM, IT'S MY 11TH BIRTHDAY," Percy said with glee. "ARE YOU FINALLY GOING TO TELL ME EVERYTHING?"
Sally smiled at her son's excitement. "Of course, Percy," She said, "But not yet. First, you get ready and come outside to eat breakfast." Immediately, Percy jumped out of bed and ran to the sink. Sally shook her head, chuckling at his antics before she walked back outside into the kitchen.
In a few minutes, Percy bounded into the kitchen, his eyes growing wide with the sight of the food before him. "MOM, this is AWESOME," He said, giving Sally a tight hug.
Sally Jackson smiled happily. " My baby boy deserves no less," She said. Percy only smiled, his mouth too full with waffles to give a proper reply. "Percy, eat slowly," Sally scolded.
Percy swallowed down the waffles, before smiling sheepishly. "Sorry mom," he said, as he took a smaller bite from his waffles. Suddenly, there was a flash of bright orange fire as Dumbledore and Fawkes apparated outside their front door.
"After you're done, we can go out and pick a birthday gift for you," Sally added, not noticing what had happened outside.
Percy's eyes widened. "What are you gonna buy for me!"
"You'll see, honey," Sally said.
Percy shoveled his food into his mouth with renewed vigor. As he was eating the last bite of the pancakes, the doorbell rang. "Mom, were you expecting someone else?" Percy asked, confused. No one ever visited the Jackson family. Everyone in the apartment thought the Jacksons were unusual and wanted nothing to do with them.
"No I wasn't," Sally muttered uneasily. She quickly pressed a button on the side of the coffee table, and a foot long stick of wood popped out of a compartment in the bottom. Sally lifted the stick in her hand. "Who could it be," She said to herself.
"Hey, mom!" Percy broke in. "What's that stick in your hand?" Sally didn't answer. She just inched closer to the door. At the last second, she threw the door open and pointed the stick at the doorway, before gasping in surprise. In front of her stood her old headmaster, Professor Dumbledore.
"P-Professor D-D-Dumbledore," Sally said."W-What are you doing here? How did you even-"
"Find you?"Dumbledore finished for her with a smile. He simply pointed at the phoenix and smiled as Sally caught on.
"Well, come on in," She said with a smile. "It has been a long time hasn't it."
"Ahh, too long, my dear," Dumbledore said. "You made it quite hard to find you."
"My apologies for that, Professor," Sally said, flushing, "But I had to protect Percy once I heard about the prophecy."
By this time, the two of them had reached the dining hall, to find Percy finishing off the last of his blue cookies. As the three walked inside, Percy broke into laughter. "Mom, Why is Gandalf in our dining room," He asked.
"Percy!" Sally scolded him. "Be polite! This is Professor Albus Dumbledore."
"Nice to meet you, Professor," Percy said politely. "Sorry about the-ah...Gandalf comment."
"Hello m'boy," Dumbledore said with a British accent. "Don't worry, we do look rather alike do we," He added, laughing.
"Yea especially with the long beard," Percy said, his eyes brightening.
"Percy!" Sally admonished.
"I'm Professor Dumbledore. I was one of your mother's teachers, many years ago," Dumbledore said, holding out his hand.
"My name is Percy Jackson," Percy said, returning the handshake.
"Let's take a seat. We have a lot to discuss."
"This isn't about..you know..." Sally questioned.
"That is what I'm here for, Sally," Dumbledore said. "I take it you haven't told him yet?"
"Told me what?" Percy asked curiously.
"I was going to tell him about it all today, it is his birthday after all," Sally said.
"Ahh, a wise decision from one of my best students," Dumbledore said.
"What is it, mom?" Percy asked again.
"Well, Percy...There's no easy way to say this," Sally said. "But the truth is, You're a wizard."
Percy looked silently between the two adults for a few seconds before falling into a fit of laughter again. "This is a joke right?" He questioned. "Witches and Wizards and magic aren't real."
"Percy, this is no joke," Sally said angrily. "She held up the stick from before and pointed it at the saucer on the table. She muttered something under her breath and a burst of orange light flew from the stick towards the saucer. As soon as it touched the saucer, the saucer burst into pieces. Another murmur and a wave of her wand, and the pieces came together again, as though nothing had happened.
"WOAH," Percy exclaimed. "You mean to say this is all real?"
"Yes Percy," Dumbledore broke in. "That is why I am here. I would like to take you to teach you magic at the same school that your mother attended."
Percy looked at his mom for confirmation, who nodded encouragingly. "That's right Percy. I went to Hogwarts too."
"Hogwarts?" Percy said, cracking a smile. "Nice name."
"Dumbledore chuckled at the boy's antics. "Yes m'boy. Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry is by far the best school of magic in the world."
"I'm assuming you have his letter too, Dumbledore?" Sally asked.
"Why of course," Dumbledore said, pulling out a piece of parchment from his long robes. "Here you go Percy," He said, passing the letter over to him.
"It was nice to see you again, Dumbledore," Sally said. "I'll definitely send him to Hogwarts. He would do much better there than at Ilvermorny."
"Good decision," Dumbledore said. "Now I must take my leave. I trust I will see you all again soon though." Giving the Jackson family one last cheerful wave, Dumbledore walked out the door. A crack following his leave as the headmaster apparated away.
After Dumbledore left, Percy once again turned to his mother. "It all makes sense now," He said. "All those weird things that happen around me."
"It's because you're a wizard Percy," Sally said, "And a very strong one at that."
"I'm that strong?" Percy asked with wonder.
"Not yet but you will be when you go to Hogwarts and start your magical studies."
"But..how do you know...What if I can't do anything.."
"Percy, you come from a very long, very magical family, from both my side and your fathers."
"Father had powers too?"
"Yes, Percy. You are the strongest child from our lineage.
It was too much to take in for Percy, who just collapsed back down into his chair. His mother and father were wizards. He himself had magical powers. He was supposedly one of the strongest of his family, and would be going to a school of magic far away to be trained by Gandalf's twin.
"Percy, what's wrong?" His mother asked.
"It's just...a lot to handle in one day..." Percy said.
"I felt the same way when I found out too," Sally said. "Don't worry, you'll get used to it. Anyway, why don't you open the letter?"
Percy carefully unfurled the parchment. The top of the parchment had a small coat of arms, with "Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry" written in large letters directly underneath it. Underneath that, in smaller letters, read "Headmaster: Albus Dumbledore (Order of Merlin First Class, Grand Sorc., Chf. Warlock, Supreme Mugwump, International Confed. of Wizards)"
Skipping the intro, Percy started to read the letter out loud. "Dear Mr. Jackson," He read. "We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry." Percy looked up as Sally gave him another encouraging smile. "Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment."
As he read this, another piece of parchment detached itself from the first one and fell to the floor. "Term begins on September 1st. Yours Sincerely, Minerva McGonagall, Deputy Headmistress."
Finishing the first piece, he picked up the other one and handed it to his mother. "Do you know where we can find all this mom," He asked.
"We'll have to go to the wizarding market, Percy," Sally said. "It's a place called Diagon Alley."
"Great! How do we get there?" Percy asked. He had begun to warm up to the idea that he could do magic. "Should I get us a cab?"
Sally laughed. "Diagon Alley can't be reached using a cab, Percy," She informed him. It's hidden from the eyes of muggles, which is our term for someone who can't use magic. We can only get there using three ways. The main entrance, which is in London, as well as by floo powder or with a portkey."
Percy muttered an intelligent reply along the lines of "Oh."
"We're going to use floo powder," Sally said, pulling a large jar of silvery powder off the fireplace counter. "You have to take a handful of this powder, throw it into the fire, speak where you want to go, and step into the fire."
"Uhhh, what?" Percy said.
"Like this," Sally said. She picked up a fist full of the powder and threw it into the flames. At once the fire grew to twice its size turning to a greenish yellow color. Percy stumbled backward. "Don't worry," Sally said. "The fire is harmless. She held his arm and led him into the fire. True to her words, Percy found that the fire only tickled him a little.
"Now all we need to do is say 'Diagon Alley' " Sally said. Together, Percy and Sally Jackson said the name of their destination. With a flash, the two disappeared from the fireplace, and the green fire died down and returned to normal.
