Alrigghttyy! Welcome back!
Nothing special here, let's just get started-
Last Time:
Harry and Percy looked at the interior of the vault, expecting riches beyond their wildest dreams. Instead, the vault was empty except for a small, grubby package wrapped up in a brown paper bag.
Hagrid picked it up and put it inside his pocket. "Best not to mention this to anyone," He said strictly.
"Don't worry, Hagrid. It'll be our secret," Sally said.
Hagrid nodded in thanks and made his way back onto the cart. Finally, the cart ascended back to the surface, and the four made their way outside, ready to start their shopping spree for Hogwarts.
Present - Diagon Alley
As soon as they all made it out of Gringotts, Hagrid made a beeline for the restrooms, located behind the bank. Percy and Harry weren't surprised. Hagrid had looked rather green after the ride in the cart.
"Now that we've gotten your money, we can go buy all your school supplies," Sally said as they waited for Hagrid to come back.
"Great! Where to first," Percy asked.
"Might as well get our robes first," Harry said. "Saying as the store is right here," He added, pointing at the shop.
Just then, Hagrid rejoined them. Percy and Harry noted that he looked slightly less green than before. "Right then!" He said, wiping his mouth on his coat sleeve. "Where y'all planning on heading first?"
"Madam Malkins," Sally answered.
"Alrighty!" Hagrid said as the four made their way over to the store. "Madam Malkin," Hagrid said, nodding to the squat smiling witch.
"Hello there!" Madam Malkin said, looking over Harry and Percy. "Hogwarts?" She asked them. "Got a lot of them in here today. There's another young boy about your age in here as well." She pointed to the back of the shop.
Harry and Percy followed her to the back, where they noticed the boy she was talking about. He had a pale, pointy face, with a heap of blonde hair on his head.
"Hello there," The boy drawled. "You boys goin' to Hogwarts as well?"
"Yes," Harry said.
"Sure are," Percy added.
"Good choice," the boy answered. "My whole family was there as well. My dad's next door buying my books and my mother's looking for a wand for me."
"That's cool..." Percy said, looking rather bored.
"I'm gonna drag them both off to look at those new racing brooms afterward," The boy drawled. "I know first years aren't allowed brooms, but-
"Wait, they're not allowed?" Harry interrupted.
"No, but I'm just gonna bully my dad into getting me one anyway," The boy said. "I'm sure I can smuggle it in somehow."
Harry instantly had a dislike of the boy and judging by Percy's face, he wasn't impressed either. To Harry, this boy was a reminder of Dudley. The only difference between them was that Dudley was overfed and couldn't do magic.
"Have you got your own broom?" The boy suddenly questioned.
Percy shuddered. "I don't enjoy flying much, so no."
"I don't have one either," Harry added, "Saying as we aren't allowed to have them anyway."
"I take it you both don't play quidditch at all?" The boy asked.
Harry, feeling stupid, answered, "Umm...No.."
"What's that?" Percy asked. Harry was relieved. He was hoping he wouldn't have had to ask the question himself.
"You can't be serious," The boy sneered. "Anyway, I do and my dad says it's a crime if I don't get selected for the house team."
"Right..." Percy added. "Now if you'll excuse us, we need to get our robes. See you later." Malfoy's face clouded over, and he glared angrily at Percy.
"Were your parents our kind?" The boy pressed.
"They were a witch and wizard if that's what you mean," Harry answered.
"Oh good. I personally don't think-" The boy started to say.
"That's it with you, you may leave," Madam Malkin interrupted. "Your robes are complete."
The boy grabbed the robes from her hand without a word, dropping a few galleons into the box on the counter, before turning to Harry.
"See you at school, I guess," He added, before walking out the door.
"Phew, I'm so glad he's gone," Percy said. Harry murmured in agreement. "He was so full of himself! I definitely hope I'm not in the same house as him."
"Now now boys," Madam Malkin called. "Let's get your measurements next." A tape measurer instantly flew across the room flying towards the boys, as a quill moving by itself started to take notes.
"You already know about the houses?" Harry asked Percy as they waited for the measuring to be done.
"Not much. I just know there are 4 of em," Percy answered. "And that there's some test or something that determines which house you go into."
"Oh..a test..?" Harry questioned. "That's just great-" At this point, the tape measure had stopped and the sewing machine had automatically started to make their clothes.
"Don't stress about it," Percy advised. "I'm sure it won't be all that hard. After all, we're just first years."
In a few minutes, the machine had finished its work and Madam Malkin had handed the boys their new school robes. "That's 4 galleons, 8 sickles, and a knut," she said. The boys handed her the coins, before returning to the waiting room.
"Got yer robes?" Hagrid asked, "Brilliant."
"Let's go to Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour," Sally said. "Give the boys a break before the rest of the shopping."
At Sally's request, Hagrid led the boys to the ice cream place, where Sally bought them each a double scoop of chocolate ice cream. As they were eating, Hagrid noticed that Harry looked deep in thought.
"Something on yer mind, Harry?" He asked.
"Yea...Hagrid, What's quidditch?" he asked, turning red with embarrassment.
"Blimey! I forgot you boys wouldn't know anything about Quidditch," Hagrid said.
"That doesn't make us feel any better, Hagrid," Percy added. "That boy from Madam Malkin's was bad enough."
"So what is Quidditch?" Harry asked again.
"It's our sport. The most popular sport in the wizarding world," Hagrid explained. "It's a bit like Basketball in the muggle world, except they play it up in the air on flying broomsticks. The rules are sorta hard to explain, but I reckon you'll catch on when you start learning in school."
"That sounds fun..." Percy said, rather sarcastically. He had always had a fear of heights. Harry, not noticing the sarcasm, nodded with enthusiasm
"Well, let's get goin now," Hagrid said. "Still got lots to buy." After the ice cream was done, Sally and Hagrid led the boys over to the book shop, called Flourish and Blotts.
The boys took a step inside and looked around in surprise. Every inch of the store was covered in books. There were books thicker than bricks, and some thin enough to have only 4-5 pages. Along the bookshelves were signs, showing which books were on that particular shelf.
Harry rummaged around in his pocket for his list. "Mind if I borrow that too?" Percy asked, grinning sheepishly. "I kind of lost mine."
"Not at all," Harry replied laughing.
"Hey Harry, look at this one," Percy said, nodding to a book titled, "Curses and Countercurses (Bewitch Your Friends and Befuddle Your Enemies with the Latest Revenges: Hair Loss, Jelly-Legs, Tongue-Tying and Much, Much More) by Professor Vindictus Viridian."
"I want that!" Harry said. "How much for this?"
That's 9 galleons, 3 sickles, and-" The shopkeeper started to say.
"Oh no, you don't!" Hagrid broke in, grabbing the book and placing it back onto the shelf it was found on.
"Hagrid, what are you doing," Harry complained. "I wanted to curse Dudley with those!"
"I'm not saying that he doesn't deserve it," Hagrid started, "But you can't do magic outside of school except in very special circumstances."
"Hagrid, I'm sure cursing someone like Dudley counts as a Special Circumstance," Percy said, giving Harry a high-five. Sally smiled, happy that the two boys had become friends so fast.
"Not to the Ministry of Magic, it doesn't," Hagrid said. "And besides, those are all advanced spells. Yeh won't be able to do any of em until your 3rd or 4th year."
Harry dejectedly placed the book down and went back to searching for the books required for school. After about 15 minutes, they had found two copies of all the books and approached the shopkeeper.
"That's 18 galleons, 14 sickles, and 22 knuts for the lot," the shopkeeper said, examining the books they had purchased. Harry and Percy paid the money, took one last wistful look at the curses book, and then followed Hagrid and Sally out the door.
"We'll go to the apothecary next, boys," Sally said, leading them across the street to the potions shop.
As they walked inside, the golden cauldrons stacked to the side immediately caught Harry's eyes. "Hey Percy, how does that look?" He questioned.
"Totally Awesome!" Percy answered. "I'll take one of those please!" He requested.
The shopkeeper looked at him as though he was crazy. "Those are 500 galleons a piece..." He said.
"Percy!" Sally admonished. "You can't go wasting your money on something like that-"
"Besides, your list says pewter, so we're getting pewter," Hagrid added, dragging them away from the gold cauldrons.
"Ok ok, fine," Percy whined, before making his way over to the other side, where bucket after bucket of potion ingredients stood, lined up against the wall. As he got closer, he scrunched his nose at the horrid smell. In the various buckets, he saw different herbs, dried roots from various plants, powders of bright colors, as well as animal parts.
"We don't need all this," Hagrid said. Percy gave him a relieved look. "Hey, can we get two sets of the first-year basic ingredients?" Hagrid yelled to the man behind the counter.
"Of course sir," The man answered, pulling out the requested items. "That's 5 galleons for each set."
"Hmm...We're almost done," Sally said, as the boys paid and exited the shop. "Just your wands left, as well as the astronomy material."
"Let's speed this up, Sally," Hagrid said. "I'll take the boys to get their wands, and you can pick up their telescopes."
"Sounds good to me," Sally said, as she hurried off to the astronomy store.
Percy And Harry could hardly contain their excitement. They had finally gotten to the part they had been waiting for. Their wands.
"Can we go get our wands now Hagrid?" They asked.
"Of course! You're gonna want to go to Ollivander's" He said. "There isn't anyone who makes better wands than him." He led them down another street towards a small shop in the corner. A sign above the door of the shop read "Ollivander's, Makers of Fine Wands since 382 B.C." Through the glass window, the boys could see a single wand, lying on a purple velvet cushion.
The boys opened the door and tried to take a step inside, before backing out. There was only room for one person to go in at once. The entire shop was strewn with wooden boxes, containing hundreds upon hundreds of wands.
Percy and Harry had a game of Rock Paper Scissors which Harry won. He stuck his tongue out at Percy, before entering the shop. As he went inside, a bell chimed. A ladder slid into view, and an old man with startling grey eyes climbed off.
"Well well well," The man said quietly. "I wondered when I would be seeing you here Mr. Potter." He studied Harry thoroughly. "You have your mother's eyes."
"You knew my mother?" Harry asked.
"Oh yes, it seems only yesterday that she was in here to buy her first wand as well. ten and a quarter inches long, swishy, made of willow. Nice wand for charm work," Ollivander stated as he moved closer to Harry.
Harry winced. Those silvery grey eyes of his were getting kind of creepy. "Your father, on the other hand," Ollivander continued. "he favored a mahogany wand. Eleven inches. Rather pliable, I'd say. Contained a little more power. Very useful for configuration."
"Wow..." Harry said, astounded by the man's memory.
"Well, I suppose the wand favored him," Ollivander said. "After all, it is the wand, who chooses the wizard, not the other way around."
At this point, Ollivander had come so close to Harry that they were almost touching nose to nose. Harry could see his own image reflected in those calculating grey eyes. Mr. Ollivander ran a long, white finger over Harry's scar. "And that's where..." He said. "I'm sorry to say that I was the one who sold the wand that did this," He added softly. "Thirteen and a half inches. Made purely of yew. A very very powerful wand, destructive in the wrong hands. I wish I had known before what the owner of that wand would do..."
'Well, anyway, let's look for a wand for you," Ollivander said. "Which is your wand arm, Mr. Potter?" He asked.
"I'm right handed," Harry answered, a bit disgruntled.
"Hold out your arm please," Ollivander instructed, as he measured from shoulder to finger, then wrist to elbow, shoulder to floor, knee to armpit, and around his head.
"Every wand has a core containing something related to a powerful magical creature, you know?" He said. "Here at Ollivander's, we specialize in unicorn hairs, phoenix tail feathers, and the heartstrings of dragons. No two wands are the same, and of course, you will never achieve the same results with another person's wand as you would achieve with your own."
Harry only nodded as Ollivander looked over the nearest shelf. "Hmm, How about you try this one?" He asked, pulling a box from the shelf and handing it to Harry. "Beechwood and dragon heartstring. Nine inches. Nice and flexible."
Harry took the wand in his hand. Nothing happened. "Ummm." He started to say.
"Give it a wave," Ollivander instructed. Harry waved the wand. Immediately, all the boxes in the room flew off their shelves. Harry jumped backward and put the wand back down. "Apparently not," Ollivander said. He waved his hand and the shop instantly repaired itself.
"Sorry.." Harry said.
"No matter!" Ollivander muttered. "How about this one?" Harry cautiously grabbed the wand. "Maple and phoenix feather. Seven inches. Quite whippy," Ollivander said. Harry pointed it at the flower pot on the table and waved it. With a burst, the flower pot exploded. Harry got the idea and put the wand back. "No. No. Definitely not!" Ollivander said.
Ollivander went off to the farthest row, where he looked over a particular box. He glanced at harry. "I wonder..." He said softly to himself. He grabbed the box and handed it to Harry. "Holly and phoenix feather, eleven inches, nice and supple."
Harry grabbed the wand in his hand. Instantly, the room was flooded with light. Harry started to glow, as a gust of warm wind swept through the shop, whipping at his hair. Harry felt a warmth in his fingers as he continued holding onto the wand.
"What was that?" Harry asked breathlessly.
Ollivander looked around the shop."Curious. Very curious.." He said.
"I'm sorry, but what's curious?" Harry broke in. "I remember every wand I've ever sold, Mr. Potter. It just so happens that the phoenix whose tail feather resides in your wand gave one other feather. Just one other," He informed Harry. "It's very curious that you are destined for this particular wand when its brother wand gave you that scar."
Harry's eyes widened. "You mean.."
"It is not always clear why, but the wand Chooses the Wizard Mr. Potter," Ollivander reminded him. "However I think it is clear that we can expect great things from you. After all, He Who Must Not Be Named did great things. Terrible, yes. But great," Ollivander said, his voice now a soft whisper.
At this point, Harry had had enough. He quickly handed over the seven galleons he had to pay for his wand, muttered a quick thank you, and exited the store.
"How was it, man?" Percy asked as soon as Harry stepped out.
"It was...I don't really know..." Harry said. "I think you should go see for yourself.."
"Good idea!" Percy said excitedly. "I'll go get mine now, be back soon!"
Percy rushed into the store, startling Ollivander, who raised an eyebrow once he saw him.
"Ahhh, Perseus Jackson," Ollivander said. "It has been many years since I've seen one of your kind here in my shop."
"One of my kind?" Percy asked. "What do you mean?"
"Ahh, nothing nothing. I expect you will find out soon enough," Ollivander said. "Now let's get right to it. Hold out your wand arm, please."
Percy, though confused, held out his right hand, allowing the magical measuring tape to take his measurements the same way it had with Harry. "Let's try this wand first," Ollivander said. "Made of ebony with a unicorn hair core, eight and a half inches, a rather springy wand."
Percy made to take the wand, but before he could put his hand around it, the wand shook and disintegrated. "I'm guessing that's NOT supposed to happen when it chooses me, right?" Percy questioned.
"It disintegrated," Ollivander remarked, stunned. "Hmm, too weak I think..." Percy hoped he was talking about the wand, not about himself. "Ahh yes, this one is stronger," Ollivander muttered, handing Percy another wand. "Blackthorn with a phoenix tail feather as its core. Rather bendable. Good for moderate to advanced spells."
Percy took this wand in his hand as well. To his relief, it didn't disintegrate on touch. "Well, it didn't turn to dust..." He said with uncertainty.
"Hmm...Try waving it," Ollivander said.
Percy waved the wand, and it burst into pieces. He jumped back, shocked. "Uhhh..."
"Ok obviously not!" Ollivander said. "You're a tricky customer, which makes this all the more fun. Not to worry, we'll find the perfect match here somewhere."They went through this process with a few more wands. Each one either disintegrated upon contact, or broke into pieces, and Percy was starting to get worried.
"Oh..." Ollivander suddenly said. "I think I have just the thing... Follow me to the back please..."
"Ok then," Percy said, following Ollivander into the back, who had pulled out another box.
"This wand was left here by a very special individual," Ollivander said. "For a very special wizard. I think it may be for you." The wand in question was a deep sea green color, similar to that of Percy's eyes, with the design of a pegasus along the handle. He handed the wand over to Percy, who took it gingerly in his hand, expecting it to blow up just like the others.
He was not expecting what happened next. As soon as he grasped the wand, he felt power welling up inside of him. A bright light burst forth from the wand, and the room was suddenly filled with the smell of the ocean.
"Ahhh... It appears this special wand has chosen you as its master," Ollivander said. "Take good care of it. It is made of river birch, with the core of a feather from the wings of a pegasus."
"Wow.." Percy said, looking at the wand happily. "That felt...Amazing..."
"Yes, I imagine it did," Ollivander said. "As it isn't an Ollivanders creation, no payment is necessary for that wand," He added, as he led Percy back to the front.
"Thank you, Mr. Ollivander," Percy called as he exited the shop. Percy found Harry and Hagrid waiting for him outside. Sally had joined them with the telescopes.
"What took you so long, mate?" Harry questioned.
"Umm well, about 50 wands disintegrated when I touched them," Percy said sheepishly. "He had to find me a special wand."
"Dang..." Harry said. "That's so cool. The design is beautiful," He added, looking over Percy's wand.
"Congrats boys," Sally cut in. "You both have your wands, and now you can officially do magic."
"Yea just not outside of school," Hagrid added. "Remember that Harry."
"In other words, he needs to wait till he's 17 to curse Dudley," Percy added.
"Oh, that reminds me!" Sally put in. "Let's get you both a birthday present next."
"I still can't believe that we have the same birthday," Harry said.
"I know right! That's so cool," Percy continued. "Wait, so what's our present?"
Sally and Hagrid had a twinkle in their eyes. "You'll see," Sally promised. "We'll be back in 15 minutes."
"In the meantime, why don't you boys look around the sweet shop or something?" Hagrid suggested.
"Sure!" Percy said, dragging Harry away, who was still insisting on going with the duo. "Surprises are fun dude, let's let them get our presents for us."
"Wow, look at those," Harry said, pointing at a cluster of rainbow colored lollipops the size of Hagrid's head.
"Yea, and those quills!" Percy added. "They have sugar in them, and you can suck on them and pretend like you're just thinking of what to write."
For the next 20 minutes, Harry and Percy went through every corner of Zonko's sweet shop, before finally hearing a knock on the window.
"Hey boys, Happy birthday," Sally and Hagrid said, waving at them. "Come on out and see what we've got for you."
Harry and Percy grinned at each other and ran outside. Hagrid and Sally had bought a snowy owl for Harry. Harry's mouth fell open once he saw it.
"You can choose a name for her later," Hagrid said. "A beauty, isn't she."
"Yea.." Harry whispered, running his fingers through the owl's soft feathers, smiling as she cooed.
"And Percy, this is for you," Sally added. She pulled the sheet off a small cage to reveal a cat.
"Aww, she's so cute," Percy said, leaning down and scratching the cat behind her ears. "Thanks so much, mother, Hagrid," Percy said as the cat meowed happily.
"Yea thank you, this is awesome," Harry said.
"And that's that," Sally said. "Looks like we're finally done!"
"Yep, yer all set for your first year now," Hagrid added. "Only one more thing. Here are your tickets for the train." He handed Percy and Harry each a small envelope. "Yer gonna wanna take the train from King's Cross Station on the first of September."
"Don't worry Hagrid," Sally said. "I'll explain to them."
"Great. Thanks, Sally. I should get going now." Hagrid said. "Dumbledore will be wanting his- Well...he'll be wanting to see me.." Hagrid said.
"Ok, bye then," Sally said.
"See you later Hagrid," Percy and Harry said. Hagrid gave them one last wave before running off towards the pub.
After he left, Percy, Harry, and Sally had dinner. "Percy, we should get going as well," Sally said as they finished up. She said a quick thank you to Tom, dropped a few coins in the tip cup, and led them over to the fireplace.
"Yea I guess so, it is pretty late," Percy said. "See you later, dude," He added, shaking Harry's hand.
"See ya mate," Harry replied, stepping away as Percy threw some Floo powder into the fireplace.
"We'll meet you at Kings Cross Station so we can go together," Percy added. And with that, Percy and Sally jumped into the roaring flames, ready to return home.
