Chapter 25
Blinding White Light
Utsuro was an ultraviolet, radioactive flash of light. Buzzing around and cutting down person after person, making bodies pile up all around him. She watched him go after Yatos and Shinsengumi alike.
As if he was swatting away flies.
He would not swat her away. She looked at Kamui and became ever more resolute, adrenaline running marathons in her veins. He would not swat them away.
The red pills had even healed her injuries, activating the natural regenerative abilities of a Yato and maxing it up to infinity.
Kamui also seemed stronger than before as well. It was like his strength had been building itself up ever since he joined the battle and now, after taking the pill, it had reached its peak and was exploding outwards.
He never stayed in one place and her eyes had trouble following his movements at this point. She decided to put her attention on their enemy, watching the monster with a growing disgust.
Kagura vigorously bolted around the battlefield, letting loose completely. She was trying to catch Utsuro but he kept teleporting around, never staying in one place for long.
He was like a persistent little fly... It was like he was playing with them.
She counted the faces she came across. Gin was alive, so was Shinpachi, Hijikata was also alive, Sougo was trying to move an unconscious Kondo…
She could not stop and help. Not now.
She caught the eye of Kamui, who nodded at her before raising his umbrella and shooting straight at Utsuro. Altana crystals, she realised and some of them seemed to have pierced the target.
But the damage done seemed to have been kept to a minimal.
Utsuro came to a halt, his long hair flying around him wildly. He smirked at them but stayed in place.
"Come," was all he said and her brother reacted immediately.
As did she.
Kagura could hear the worried shouts from her friends but she couldn't bring herself to care. She only cared about one thing now. Blood. They circled around their enemy, landing kicks and punches.
Most of them were blocked, evaded, or received with little effect.
However, the more they fought, the easier it became to evade his attacks. Her instincts became sharper with each passing second.
It almost felt like she could somewhat predict his next movements. At least a little bit. Kamui came at him from one side and she another, though they drastically moved around. Ruthlessly, they attacked him and in time, their kicks and punches seemed to gain in ferocity.
And effect.
It gave her motivation and spurred her on even further. She spun around and landed a hard kick to his head. He staggered to the side and Kamui raised his umbrella, looking ready to chop him up.
He swung it down into nothing but air.
And then… she felt a cold, dead breath, right by her ear. Unimaginable levels of dread washed over her. Kagura raised her elbow and swung it around with as much force as she could muster.
Utsuro just gave an insidious, crooked smile, catching her arm.
And breaking it.
An agonizing shriek clawed its way out of her mouth and she screamed her throat raw as he lifted her up by her broken limb. She kicked him mercilessly, snarling and spitting in pain.
Kamui was there in an instant. His movements were so quick, he was but a blur of color. His hand came down on Utsuro's wrist, chopping it in half in a millisecond.
Utsuro teleported away at the very last second but his severed hand remained severed nonetheless.
She landed on one knee, holding her discolored and deformed arm. Kamui spared her a quick glance before looking away, keeping his attention on Utsuro.
Utsuro, who seemed content with just watching them, held up his wrist and small pieces of muscle tissue was already reforming his hand.
"Your arm is broken," Kamui said.
"I know that!" she snapped, prodding the flesh and trying to breathe.
"Even with the activation, you probably won't be able to heal bones in time, Kagura," he snapped back at her, never taking his eyes off Utsuro.
The girl stared up at him with something close to fury in her eyes. His head was angled away from her, so she couldn't see his face. She was about to answer him when her prodding fingers came across something that quite literally stood out.
A game changer.
"Wait Kamui!" she exclaimed, feeling around her arm and double checking her observations.
"What?" he seethed, sounding annoyed.
Almost immediately, she got to her feet.
"It's not broken! It's just dislocated," she hurriedly said, walking briskly to his side.
Her brother continued to watch Utsuro, who just creepily stared at him back. His hand found her arm, his lips twitching as he felt the flesh.
She grimaced in pain, he wasn't exactly gentle.
"Okay I can fix this, watch Utsuro for me," he quickly said, turning to her and taking her arm into his hands.
She stared at Utsuro and held her breath, bracing herself for the coming pain of putting the bone back in place.
Without warning, he pushed her elbow back and twisted her forearm a bit. Bone on bone, a jarring, smoldering pain which caused her to scream out loud, her knees buckling a bit.
"The bruises will heal pretty soon," was all her brother said.
It was all he could say, before she witnessed Utsuro disappear in a white, blinding light. Snapping out of existence, only to promptly reappear right before them. A shocked scream lodged itself in her throat.
He raised his sword high and now she could feel a tangible energy, buzzing around them. Deadly. Lethal.
This was something different.
Kamui grabbed her around the waist and they quickly evaded the sharp weapon. In the wake of its potent swing, the chaotic energy of Utsuro followed, making the ground scatter apart. He continued to jump backwards with her in his arms, running from the energized wave which left crater after crater in its wake.
The image of seeing heaps of corpses, topple over the edges into the earth below… She knew it would stay in her mind forever. Horrifically detailed.
She clutched her brother's arms and tried to look around. Everyone else was fleeing the energetic wave as well but suddenly, it all stopped.
The air lost its lethal, moving density and she realized that Utsuro had stopped swinging at them. Instead, he was currently blocking the sword of Gin.
Gintoki, with the help of Hijikata and Sougo, engaged the beast. Three and against one, but Utsuro could be fighting an entire army of elite soldiers and the game would still be rigged in his favor.
Kamui put her down but left an arm encircled around her shoulders. She struggled against his hold.
"Let me go! We need to go and help them!" she yelled at him, twisting around to meet his eyes.
Wide, intense, angry eyes which stared down at her and they almost seemed venomous for a second.
"You're not fighting that thing without me!" he barked at her, vehemently so.
Kamui took a look around, it seemed as if he was looking for something.
"Abuto!" he shouted and she followed his gaze, taking in the older Yato.
He sat crouched down over her father, tending to his wounds.
"Captain!" Abuto yelled back, briefly looking up at them before returning his attention to the bandages he was placing around Umibouzu's head.
She ripped herself out of Kamui's grasp, completely taken by the scene.
"Abuto, how is he?!" Kagura yelled, holding her breath, unable to look away from her father.
"Alive, but unconscious!" answered Abuto and she released her breath with a sigh of relief.
"Abuto, come with us!" Kamui continued, gesturing from the older man to follow them.
"I need to finish this first, I'll be with you shortly! He might die If I don't-" Abuto began to explain.
"Screw him! We need you now!" Kamui sharply exploded, throwing his arms up in aggravation.
A horrid, repulsed sound rose in the back of her throat, she stared at her brother in outrage.
Kamui drew his lips back in a sneer, he actually had the gall to roll his eyes at her.
"Don't look so shocked, you know I don't like him."
She was even more disgusted by that. Turning around, she cupped her hands around her mouth, yelling: "Abuto! Thank you so much!"
He nodded at her in return and she glanced over at Kamui, the disgust in her eyes never wavering.
"You want him dead so badly huh?" she heard herself say, gripping her umbrella tightly.
Kamui's eyes hardened into two indigo stones, staring her down.
"That would be preferable, yes," he stated, unfeelingly so.
Unapologetic.
She took a step back, fighting back the tears rising in her eyes, shaking her head. She felt more emotional than normal, but that's understandable.
Yet there was something she could not shake, it had just occurred to her... He had told her he loved her. But was this really a way to treat someone you apparently loved?
She looked him up and down, this brutish man who had gotten her intoxicated, fucked her and taken photos of her. And after that, he had refused to leave her alone, completely ruining her life.
And after all of that, he would tell her that he loved her. And she, in that moment, had just gulped it down with no thought whatsoever.
Kagura knew she was judging him a tad bit too harshly, she knew she was somewhat skipping over context to each situation. But she also knew that this was all true on some deep, fundamental level.
Kamui just stared at her, an incredulous look in his eye. His alabaster skin was smeared with dirt and bruises, his hair had droplets of blood dampening his red locks. His indigo eyes were like storm clouds, intense and electric. Even now, despite everything, she still finds herself attracted to him.
"You know what? You really disgust me," she rasped out, not really sure on who she was talking to.
Herself or Kamui? Maybe both. Maybe none.
Swiftly, she turned around and bolted away towards Utsuro. She heard him curse behind her back, already knowing that he was running after her.
But she decided to focus on the task at hand.
...
In the center of the battlefield, there was a large, imposing crater. Altana swirled around in it, gathering around the white dog deity, enclosing him in an energetic bubble. Sadaharu was still fighting, keeping the Altana from going into full berserk-mode.
He was keeping them alive.
Emerald, vibrant energy spilled put across the surrounding battlefield, casting a sickly, green sheen over the grounds, the ruins and the people. Even the skies were filled with thick black and green tinted clouds.
They could not see the havoc that was going on in the atmosphere, the galactic battle. And maybe that was a good thing.
Apocalyptic was the best way to describe it.
The monster they fought, brutally kicked her in the stomach, making her swirl away through the air. She coughed up blood as she felt her back slam into something else. Someone grunted and wheezed behind her back and recognized the tune.
Her and Sougo landed on top of each other, knocking their heads together.
"Aowch what the fuck…" she heard him rasp out and she rolled off of him, massaging her forehead.
"Thanks for the landing…" she muttered, coughing up more blood.
Her stomach felt mangled, every movement ripped through her with tremendous pain. She glanced up at Sougo, having felt his eyes on her.
"You have internal injuries," the policeman stated, breathing heavily.
She could see a trail of blood escaping the corner of his mouth, he had bruises everywhere and his clothes were torn and tattered.
"I doubt there's anyone here that doesn't," replied Kagura with only a little bit of sarcasm.
It went unacknowledged by the swordsman, who moved his eyes to observe the ruckus before them.
She watched him, watching Kamui.
A hard lump formed in her throat as she saw her brother buzzing around acrobatically, a blur of color. He was like a paintball going back and forth between Utsuro and various boulders he would use to catapult himself back onto the immortal.
He seemed angry to her.
Rageful.
Not fearful, but mad as mad can be.
His fighting style had always been that of impeccable, merciless brutality. Chaotic, bloody ruthlessness and sheer coldness. And now, it was ramped up to another level. Just by watching him alone, she would get flashbacks to Rakuyou.
She was glad he wasn't the only one fighting the monster.
"Your brother seems... fine..." Sougo slowly muttered behind her back, standing up and using his sword to lean on.
She could tell that there was a hint of disdain in his voice. She ignored that.
"He heals faster than me…" answered Kagura, unable to look away from the aggressive redhead.
She got to her feet, fighting back her nausea. Looking down at her attire, she noted that her stockings were torn. Not only that, but there was a big, bloody imprint on her clothes, right above her stomach.
She was bleeding from her stomach, albeit not too much. It seemed to be already healing, but it still hurt like hell.
Taking a deep breath, she nodded towards the Sadist, who nodded back at her. Together, the two youths sprung forwards, both of them attacking Utsuro from each side.
She had to take special care as to not run straight into her fast-moving brother. Her feet left the ground and she catapulted herself into the air. She raised her foot and slammed it down on the side of Utsuro's head, whilst Kamui appeared at her left side, slamming down his own foot on the other side of the monster's skull.
Sougo came with his sword, ready to pierce his chest. But the immortal halted his attempts and caught his sword with his bare hand.
A deep, gurgling sound of what sounded like a laugh, escaped him.
As did blood.
The almighty Utsuro actually coughed up blood. Sougo seemed so surprised by this that he staggered back, ripping his sword out of his grasp.
Three, muscly fingers were promptly severed. All of them, nothing but newly formed tissue, just like the rest of his hand. But the muscle tissue seemed to be swaying back and forth, like seaweeds underwater.
Kagura and Kamui, who had long since jumped down, observed their grimy shoes and Utsuro's head. His ears were nothing but bloody stumps, like they had exploded from an outside force.
A hoarse chuckle could be heard from the monster, he stood slightly bent down and to everyone's surprise, blood started to slowly seep through his dark clothes.
Wounds from before, which were finally taking effect…
"Why now?" she could hear Kamui whisper.
Utsuro stared down at his ruined, red hand, which seemed to be coming apart at the seams.
"Is that dog deity still at it?" he drawled out, looking directly at the big, fuming crater Sadaharu was in.
He scoffed, standing up straight.
"There's still plenty of Altana left in me, when that dog burns his entire life away, the ley lines will spiral out of control again… Provided he isn't put to death before that," he went on and just as he said those words, undead Naraku corpses rose up and surrounded the crater.
Heeding to their master's command.
Kagura was just about to run over there when someone beat her to it. Shinpachi and Abuto and several other Yato clansmen, sprung forth from nowhere, defending Sadaharu.
"Hey guys!" shouted Shinpachi, "We might need some help over here!"
Her four-eyed friend fought valiantly, displaying an impressive show of swordsmanship. Hijikata answered the call and threw them one last glance before running off to help.
"Such heroics…" mocked Utsuro, shaking his head.
"You have fragments of Altana crystals in your bloodstream. Right now, your immortality is effectively halted," Gintoki suddenly spoke, his voice hard and strong.
The white haired man threaded closer, standing to face his former teacher. Utsuro just narrowed his eyes with a sneer.
"I suspected as much, you must have put them there when I didn't have eyes."
"Correct."
In the next second, Gintoki charged at him, raising his sword high. Utsuro blocked it immediately and they began sparring back and forth in the most lethal way.
In a crazed way, breaking down with each hit. Only this time, Utsuro was breaking down as well.
Excitement clouded her mind. They had a chance, didn't they? With his immortality "put on hold" so to say…
Suddenly, rising, frantic shouts could be heard from the green-lit crater where Sadaharu was. Distracted, she looked over to see her friends moving away from the crater, as the green light became brighter and brighter.
A tremor ran through the earth, shaking the ground beneath their feet and catching everyone's attention. Making them stop in their tracks.
"Fucking hell, the thing's gonna explode!" Abuto yelled, moving like a juggernaut through the zombies, throwing them away as he ran from the crater.
Shinpachi and Hijikata were right behind him.
"S-Sadaharu…" Kagura managed to utter, before-
"BOOM"
A bright, green light, shot out from the crater and pierced the heavens above. Simultaneously, thick beams of the same green light exploded out from the earth all around them. One by one.
Altana, spilling out and running wild.
The shockwave pushed her back and she stumbled into Kamui. Her bones trembled and she could feel the arms of her brother, dragging her down to a crouched position. He pushed her head into his chest and shielded her eyes.
An impact of dust and stones, made them both cough like mad.
More and more booming explosion went off all around them. More and more Altana were leaking out, the dragon veins were running amok. Her ears had never heard such a loud, terrible noise before, it was literally painful.
She looked up from her brother's chest, seeing that he was waving around, trying to clear the smoke. She joined him in that endeavor. Bit by bit, the smoke fell away to reveal that everything was bathing in a green light, illuminated by the Altana.
Her eyes caught sight of the imposing gigantic, emerald beam, coursing up into the skies.
"Sadaharu!" she screamed, staring in horror at the radiating crater.
Did- Did her dog just explode?
Her blood rushed to her ears, her eyes wide and staring at the spillage of Altana. The air felt toxic, smelling of gasoline. It felt flammable.
Dangerous. It stung her eyes and her nose.
She did not have time to think. She did not have time to grieve, or to panic, or to even comprehend.
Because Utsuro's sword, cut deeply into Gintoki's shoulder, his foot kicking his stomach.
"Gin-chan!" she yelled out in alarm, as her friend came flying through the air, right at her.
She got to her feet and caught him with a grunt. They fell to the ground with a hard thump. She landed underneath him, feeling the air leave her lungs.
Kamui was there in an instant, taking Gintoki by the arm and dragging him off of her. Kagura coughed and wheezed, looking up to see Gin rip his arm out of the redhead's grip.
Kamui snarled at him, meeting Gintoki's vehement glare.
There was no love lost between these two, it would seem.
Kamui's ocean eyes moved down to her and she briefly met them before looking away. She crawled over to her friend, who held his stomach in pain.
"S-Sadaharu…" he got out with a cough, getting up to his knees.
Her heart was in her throat, she shook her head in a panicked way.
"Don't say it," she blurted out, her eyes swimming with tears.
He looked up at her and she could see herself in his glossy, watery eyes. His face was marred with bruises.
He opened his mouth, but Utsuro beat him to it.
"It's over."
An utterance as dry as dust. Kagura's head snapped over to the immortal, her neck cracking from the harsh movement. She stared at his cold, cruel face and she had never felt such hatred before.
She bared her teeth, a wild, unhinged look in her blue eyes. Utsuro met her stare and his face did not change.
It was soul-destroying.
She got to her feet, seeing red, feeling completely out of it.
The minute she moved, Kamui moved with her, clenching his fists in her clothes and hauling her back from her onslaught.
Snarling and spitting, she kicked and screamed, toiling in his grasp.
"Let me go! Let me get him- Let me kill him, LET GO-!"
"LOOK AT THE GREEN BEAM YOU BLIND OAF!" Kamui suddenly roared in her ear, shaking her as if he was shaking some sense into her.
Abuto appeared by their side, taking in her tear stricken face. He turned around and she followed his gaze.
"What the…" she heard him whisper under his breath.
And now, she knows why.
In the distance, high up inside the green beam, Sadaharu could be seen floating, in big, magenta sphere. Her heart jumped to her throat. Her dog's eyes shimmered in a green glow, his white fur standing on end, overflowing with energy.
He did not disintegrate.
"Sadaharu!" she heard Gin and Shinpachi bellowing in the background, though her eyes remained fixed on her beloved canine.
Her opened his mouth, baring his fangs at Utsuro, who also stood, staring up at the scene.
A resounding, strong bark left him. Reverberating out, like the ringing of a bell. Loud like the roar of a lion and deep like the howl of a wolf.
Blue, bright lines manifested above him, swirling around in a geometric pattern before forming a star. A heavy symbol, staring them all down and building up with energy. She stared in wonder and awe as blue, glowing spheres gathered around it, floated up to it from somewhere above them.
Suddenly, the air felt heavy with something else. Not just the sheer power of the Altana, but also an electric energy, moving all around them. Something that felt more alive than the Altana. More… conscious almost. More aware.
Suddenly, she could feel eyes on her. On them.
Her eyes scattered around, shockingly talking in the gathering silhouettes standing around in the distance. All around them, amassed in this brilliant blue energy, were people. They were standing on top of several ruined buildings, looking down at them, completely engulfed in this strange light.
She could not understand it, she could not-
"Oh I see," Utsuro's voice cut through her ears and her eyes snapped over to his standing, rigid form.
In the midst of all this, Kamui never stopped holding her. It would have been weird if it had been. But it was not. For everything else was infinitely stranger. She leaned into his touch, feeling his hands enclosed around her semi-raised arms.
He breathed heavily in her ear, smelling of blood and smoke. And Altana. Strangely enough, that strong, tangy odor seemed to stick to him.
Maybe it stuck to all of them at this point. She swallowed thickly, watching Utsuro like a hawk as he shook his head, looking around at the blue-glowing people around them.
"Using life as an energy source? I must admit that I did not expect that as an outcome…" he drawled out, his laughing eyes ending up on Gintoki, who stood up leaning on his sword.
"...What do you mean?" her friend slurred out, looking in between the glowing people and the monster.
The monster who smiled at him in amusement.
"Of course you wouldn't know the first thing about this…" he jeered, "Ordinary people cannot suppress ley lines. However, they can convert their life energy into Zen power, but that's only possible with the help of a certain clan, acting as mediums," he explained.
Kagura heard a gasp leave her before she had even registered that she'd opened her mouth to begin with.
"Ane-chan…" she expressed without thinking, once again glancing up at the glowing, blue pentagram.
Utsuro, fixed his gaze on her, making her skin crawl. She stiffened up, feeling her brother's fingers dig into her skin.
"Those priestesses is it? Hmph, I did not expect them to live this long, nevertheless to throw away people's lives on this meaningless endeavor," the immortal remarked, watching her closely before looking back at Gin.
The surging, Altana beams dimmed down and became smaller and smaller. And Utsuro's face twisted into something most foul. He pointed his sword at Gintoki.
"This setback won't hinder me."
...
Utsuro seems more dangerous now than ever before. Probably because he actually feels threatened, at least to some degree.
She aimed her fist at his head but he blinked away, shimmered away almost, his hand was at her stomach, landing a heavy blow to her injuries.
Subsequently, she flew away into a rock, coughing up more blood and holding her stomach. Sougo came flying after her, landing some feet away with a sliced up torso. He grunted and moaned in pain and she immediately crawled over to him.
He was losing a lot of blood.
With trembling fingers, she undid the cloth she had around her waist and dabbed his chest with it, before tying it around his torso.
"China nevermind me," he wheezed out, sounding like a broken vacuum cleaner.
"You'll be of no use to us dead," was her only answer, trying to sound casual and blunt but the heavy emotion could still be heard.
She was deathly afraid of losing him. That just couldn't happen.
"Please stay here," she said, taking a hold of his shoulders and pushing him down on the ground, seeing as he tried to sit up.
He winced and shook his head, his sandy strands were caked with blood and dirt. Making his blond hair look brown.
"No way…" he muttered, glaring up at her.
And just like that, her patience was gone.
Once again she pushed him down, now with more force than necessary.
"I cannot have you running around in this state, it will distract me because then I will have to worry about you dying! Just do as I say for once!" she hissed.
It looked like he was about to disagree when another body came flying towards them. It was Gin. Kagura ducked down at the last second and saw him crash down behind them.
"Gin!" she yelled out, watching him roll over and clear his throat.
He stuck his thumb up, "I'm fine!" he yelled back.
She shook her head, meeting his grey eyes as he unsteadily sat up and looked around for his weapon.
"Your brother is fucking crazy, I don't get how he's still standing…" he told her, pointing to something over her shoulder.
Kagura furrowed her brows and turned around, her heart leaping to her throat. What she saw shook her to her core.
"K-Kamui…" she brokenly whispered out.
Her brother was engaged in hand to hand combat with Utsuro, whose sword laid off to the side, forgotten.
Their movements were fast, she wasn't able to pick up on them at all. Yet they seemed to circle each other. Utsuro evaded his fist and punched his stomach. Kamui went flying back, doing a volt in the air before landing on a rock.
As he jumped up, the rock exploded into debris from the force of his boots. He shot away from it, surging through the air towards Utsuro.
"This won't end well…" she breathed, rising up and running towards the scene.
"Kagura no wait!" Sougo and Gin yelled in unison but she ignored it.
Kamui crashed into the immortal with his fist placed right at his chest. He was already wounded there, it was a weak spot.
The immortal was knocked away, flipping through the air before disappearing in a flash of light.
He had teleported again…
"Where the fuck did he go?!" she could hear her brother snarl as she ran up to him.
"Kamui!" she exclaimed, already so out of breath.
He looked at her, mildly surprised. She grabbed his arm and inspected him. Sure he had blood and dirt on his clothes but it didn't look like his own. And the wounds she did find were healing pretty fast.
"I can't believe it!" she gasped, looking at the fast fading bruises and cuts.
"I heal fast, especially when I accumulate adrenaline. It's the booster," he quickly explained with the sort of smugness and excitement only he could have at a time like this.
"Why are you healing faster than me then?" she asked, holding her stomach.
At least it wasn't bleeding anymore down there…
"I'm naturally stronger than you Kagura. I'm around 100% on this stuff, while you're probably somewhere around 80%," Kamui told her, "Though, I have a lot of internal injuries that'll take longer to heal, it's just not something you see on the outside."
She was about to respond, when she heard a desperate sort of shouting behind her. That very same moment, instantaneously, her whole body jerked and her feet were lifted from the ground. She tried to scream but nothing but blood came out.
Her lower abdomen felt shredded, absolutely torn up. It felt like someone had impaled her on a huge, jagged branch. It was so painful, that she actually couldn't even feel it. Yet it pounded inside of her, mercilessly.
Shredding her flesh, forcing its way inside-
"SNAP"
The sound of something breaking echoed through her. She could only make sick, gurgling noises, her muscles seizing to function.
Her vision was blurry but she could still see red blood smattering over her brother's chin. His mouth was open and he was screaming. Yet the sound of it was subdued and low, like he was yelling at her from underwater.
Kamui grabbed her upper body and ripped her out of whatever was holding her. And thus, something else was ripped out of her as well.
She screamed as the pounding got worse, a shrill howl, tearing up her throat. Then, everything seemed to melt. Shapes became shapeless, her vision became liquefied. Colors swirled around in a confusing mix, like oil paint, growing brighter and brighter.
Until she could see only white.
No noise. No sensations. No nothing.
Only a blinding, white light, spilling over her like warm milk...
She did not have a body anymore.
