Chapter 4: Combat 101
"Ugh, why do you have to leave us at this daycare?" Maddie says to her dad.
"I'm sorry kids, but I have to go to Crop-Con, I need to see if anybody is interested in my work so I could have more help around here" Mr. Flour says.
"YOU DON'T EVEN FARM!" Maddie says loudly.
"Besides with Marcy around it seems like you two are always getting in trouble" Mr. Flour says.
"Oh cmon, I'm very responsible" Marcy exclaims.
"Oh yeah, remember that one time you accidentally let all the cows loose
, or that other time you accidentally lured a praying mantis to town" Mr. Flour says.
"What, I don't remember that happening" Marcy says.
"WELL IT DID!" Mr. Flour yells.
"So while I'm leaving Rosemary, GInger, and Lavender with Ms. Croaker, I'll leave you two at the daycare, understand" Mr. Flour says.
"Ok" Maddie and Marcy both say.
It was a long ride to the daycare, but eventually they made it there.
"Alright kids, here we are" Mr. Flour says.
"Whoa, this daycare is pretty tall" Marcy says.
"No duh, maybe this will be a lot more fun than I thought it would" Maddie says suspiciously.
"Don't you dare get any ideas Maddie" Mr. Flour says.
Just then another snail wagon appears which seems to be carrying three frogs, Hop Pop, Sprig, and Polly.
"Oh, well hey there Mr. Flour, are you dropping your kids off here as well?" Hop Pop questions.
"Yep, are you going to Crop-Con?" Mr. Flour says.
"Yep, but I don't know what a non-farmer like you would be doing in Crop-Con" Hop Pop says.
"Hey uh, human girl, seems like we will be hanging out for a while" Sprig says.
"I guess so, oh by the way the name is Marcy Wu" Marcy says.
"Well nice to meet you Marcy" Sprig says.
"Even though the rest of the townspeople trust you, I'll be keeping a close eye on you, MONSTER!" Polly says as she brings out a rolling pin.
"Now Polly give that back, don't want you to get into any fights" Hop Pop says
As they are talking the instructor of the daycare opens the door and welcomes them.
"Greetings fellow adults, kids, and creepy monsters" The owner of the Daycare says.
"Geez, I'm still offended when people call me that" Marcy says.
"I am Tritonio Espada, the instructor of this daycare" He says.
"Huh, I thought Briar and Iriz Bogwater ran this place" Hop Pop questions.
"Don't worry, the Bogwaters have retired and sold this business to me" Tritonio exclaims.
"Well that's a relief, You can call me Mr. Flour and this over here is Hopediah Plantar, we will be dropping off our kids here so make sure you take care of them" Mr. Flour says.
"Alright, I shall educate and take care of them" Tritonio says.
"Ugh, I hate teachers so much, they're never interested in what I can do" Maddie says.
"I guess you and I have very different opinions, I love teachers, as long as you listen, behave, and don't get into any trouble, you're a straight A student, like me" Marcy says.
"Alright kids, behave yourself we will be back in a couple of days" Mr. Flour says as he rides off with Hop Pop.
"Ah yes, now it is just me and you four, let us cast aside these illusions"
Tritonio takes off his disguise and he appears to be a newt with green skin, short brown silky hair, a goatee, and surprisingly a lot of chest hair.
"At first you may not be able to tell, but this is not a daycare, this is a combat crash course (for kids) where you will learn how to get strong and eventually face your final test to prove you are worthy enough to be a noble soldier" Tritonio says.
"Uh, I have a question, what if we don't want to do this" Marcy says.
"I know this may seem dangerous at first, but trust me being out there fighting for your life, it's a lesson all amphibians need to know, even monsters like you" Tritonio says.
"You need to learn how to stay on your toes and trust no one, hey look over there" Tritonio says to Sprig.
"Wait, What is it? '' Sprig says as he gets hit by a stick from Tritonio.
"I said trust no one, now follow me lesson one begins" Tritonio says.
As they open the doors to the tower it is filled with weapons and armor for anyone.
"Now Lesson 1 begins, pick your weapon" Tritonio says
Lesson 101: Pick A Weapon
"OMG, but there are so many weapons to choose from, look at this shield, or this sword, OMG IS THAT A CROSSBOW!" Marcy says happily.
"Everything looks boring to me" Maddie says.
"Wow, check out this sling-shot, it's even better than mine, but I think I'll take these daggers, they look sharp" Sprig says.
"Woah, what are these mushrooms?" Polly questions.
"Ah, those are boom shrooms, small and unassuming, but in the right hands" Trotonio says as he presses the stem of it.
"EXPLOSIVE" Tritonio yells as he throws the thing in the air.
"They're perfect, do you think I could also take this three-spiked morning star?" Polly questions.
"I don't see why not, there is a weapon for everyone, go pick" Tritonio says.
"Check out this crossbow guys, it attaches right onto your arm, you can shoot arrows with it, and retracts the arrows if they are attached to a rope, this could be used for so many things" Marcy says happily.
"Yes, yes, yes, you seem to be one who's not that great in close range" Tritonio says.
"I guess not" Marcy says.
"May I recommend some armor to have more protection and maybe this battle axe if you can carry it" Tritonio says.
"Yeah, give me that axe '' Marcy says as she tries to carry it,but only up to her legs.
"Don't worry I'll get a hang of it" Marcy says.
"What about you young girl?" Tritonio says to Maddie.
"I'll take this I guess" Maddie says as she grabs a dagger.
"Alright, good job kids, now time for Lesson 2, Training.
Lesson 102: Training
Alright kids, I have set up an obstacle course for you guys, you must complete before the time runs out" Tritonio says.
"Piece of cake" Maddie says.
"3, 2, 1, GO" Tritonio says as they run off.
Sprig is in the lead for most of the race with Polly in second, and Marcy in third, but Maddie is last. Sprig excels at the tire jumps, the climbing, and the fake soldiers in the way. Sprig uses his daggers to disarm the fake soldiers weapons, Polly crashes into them using her weapon, and Marcy shoots them from a far distance to take them out. Just when Sprig is about to finish Maddie finishes her spell to teleport to the end.
"Tada, and I win" Maddie says.
"I'm sorry Maddie, but I'm afraid that's cheating, Sprig has technically won" Tritonio says.
"What, but I got to the end first" Maddie says.
"Yes you did, but you didn't do any of the obstacles, your next challenge begins soon for now you guys can rest" Tritonio says.
"Ugh, it isn't fair, everything I do to impress others is called cheating and not allowed" Maddie says.
"Don't worry, maybe you will do better in the next one" Marcy says.
"Thanks for the encouragement" Maddie says.
After a few more tests it's the day before they final test to prove themselves. While Polly and Sprig talk, Maddie and Marcy have a chat.
"So feeling any better Maddie?" Marcy questions.
"I guess so, but I just really want to do some magic. When I found this book and showed it to the world on one was interested. One day a bunch of herons attacked and destroyed the whole town. I tried to fight them back so I could prove myself to the townspeople, but I only made it worse" Maddie says
"I'm so sorry Maddie" Marcy says.
"It's okay, you did nothing, it's my fault I angried the herons with my spell, they killed many people, Ivy's Dad, Sprig and Polly's Mom and Dad, and my Mom as well, I just wished I could change the past and fix my mistake" Maddie says.
Behind her though was Tritonio, who had heard everything.
"Listen, Maddie I'm sorry for not being that nice to you, the reason I'm treating you like this is because I see great potential in you, that's why I'm giving you this'' Tritonio says as he gives a box to Maddie.
"What is it?" Maddie questions.
"It's a staff, my family was not only interested in weapons, they were interested in the dark arts. I don't know how to get this working, but I'm sure a great curse user like you will figure it out' Tritonio says as Maddie opens it revealing a staff with a purple orb in the middle emitting light.
"Thank you, I guess you're not that bad of a teacher" Maddie says.
"Bring it here" Tritonio says as they both hug each other.
"Now get ready you two, it's a big day tomorrow, I wish you the best of luck.
The Next Day
"Alright kids you have all improved so much, but today is the day you do your final test, behold" Tritonio says as he reveals a large sheet of paper with plans on it.
"I have rented a train, and inside the train is a fake priceless ruby, i have also hired guards who will do anything to stop you from stealing it, your job is to take out the guards and steal the ruby, once the mission is complete, you have finished your final test, we leave soon so be prepared, good luck" Tritonio says as he leaves the room.
"Yeah, so is it me or does it look like we're just robbing a train" Sprig says.
"Yeah, do you think Tritonio could be using us?" Polly says.
"That is possible, he could just be using us to steal the ruby for him just so he doesnt get caught, at least that could be possible" Marcy says.
"No guys, Tritonio is a good guy, I'm sure we can trust him" Maddie says.
"When did you start liking him?" Sprig says.
"When he saw I had potential, now let's go out there and do this thing" Maddie yells.
"Let's do this" Everyone says loudly.
The Test
"I'm glad to see you all here, now remember the plan, Maddie and Sprig take out the guards, and Marcy and Polly get the Ruby, I believe you all, good luck" Tritonio says as they all go out and complete the mission.
"Maddie, Sprig, go for them now" Marcy says as her and Polly go on top of the train.
"Hey, do you hear something?" A guard says.
"It's probably nothing, let's just stand here for no reason" Another guard says, but just then Sprig kicks one to the ground and Maddie does the same thing to the other guard and ties them up.
"Two down, 48 more to go" Sprig says.
Marcy and Polly are on the train, when they see the room with the ruby in it they jump down and snatch it.
"Yes, guys we did it" Marcy yells as Sprig and Maddie finish all the guards off.
"Good job, now we just wait for Tritonio" Maddie says, but as soon as she said that Tritonio appears with Polly and Marcy.
"I see you guys have completed your mission" Tritonio says menacingly.
"You better believe we did, now what do we do?" Marcy says as he hands it to Tritonio.
"Before we go, does anyone remember my first lesson" Tritonio says
"Oh I know, trust no one" Polly says.
"Correct, now if you don't mind I will lock you in here, goodbye" Tritonio says as he locks the hatch Polly and Marcy are in.
"NO, Tritonio let us out" Marcy says.
"Sorry kids, but I have just been using you this whole time, now like I said goodbye" Tritonio says as he runs away.
"Polly get us outta here, we need to teach someone a lesson" Marcy says as Polly pulls out her boom shrooms and blows up the hatch.
"Eat mushrooms suckers" Polly says as she and Marcy charge at Tritonio.
"Oh, how pathetic" Tritonio says as he kicks Polly to the edge of the train where she is about to fall.
"Ah, someone help me" Polly says.
Marcy takes out her axe and tries to swing it at Tritonio, but he dodges it and brings out his sword. The two of them clash their weapons at each so hard that both their weapons fall out of their hands in the air and they swap, Marcy has his sword, and Tritonio has her axe.
"I don't understand, last time we fought you were weak, you couldn't even carry the axe, how did you get stronger?" Tritonio says.
"Maybe that's because someone taught me how to, FIGHT" Marcy says as she tries to go for a big strike.
"Marcy, save Polly, she is gonna fall" Maddie yells.
"But, if I stop he will get away" Marcy says.
"What's better, letting the bad guy get away, or saving a friend?" Maddie yells.
Marcy questions her choice. It was one of the hardest choices she had to make. As she is thinking her eyes glow green again for a second or two and she comes up with a plan. Tritonio is startled by the sudden eye glow, but she leaves Tritonio and goes for Polly.
"What about Tritonio" Polly says.
"Don't worry, Marcy Wu has a plan for everything" Marcy says as she uses her crossbow to shoot Polly towards Tritonio so she can place a boom shroom for him to step on, then Marcy pulls Polly back.
"Well that can't be good" Tritonio says as the boom shrooms blows up from the ground.
"Ugh, you have a lot of nerve doing that, but who cares, let's have some fun" Tritonio says as Polly and Marcy fight him. Tritonio kicks Polly out the way again, but she saves herself with her weapon. Marcy uses Tritonio's sword and Tritonio uses Marcy's axe. The two go head to head in combat, exchanging hits, and hitting strikes. Tritonio starts to get the upper hand on Marcy, but Polly comes in and uses her boom shrooms to save Marcy.
"Thanks Marcy, I guess you aren"t half bad" Polly says.
"You too, Polly" Marcy says as they continue fighting Tritonio.
"Alright Sprig I need you to shoot this paralyzing curse at Tritonio" Maddie says.
"But, what if I miss" Sprig says.
"DON'T MISS" Maddie yells.
Sprig attaches the curse to his sling shot and shoots it at Tritonio.
"Marcy, Polly, get out of here" Sprig says as he shoots the curse at Tritonio.
Tritonio gets hit by it and he can't move. Marcy, Maddie, Polly, and Sprig get Tritonio arrested.
"Hey buddy, I can't believe you tricked us into working with you, were you even teaching us" Marcy says.
"I still see potential in all of you, but you have to do what you have to do" Tritonio says.
"Was the goatee even real?" Marcy questions.
"What do you think?" Tritonio says as he takes off the goatee on his chin
Back at the Tower
"Man, that was rough" Polly says.
"I guess you hate teachers even more now" Sprig says to Maddie.
"Actually, Tritonio wasn't half bad, sure he was a criminal, but he was really nice" Maddie says.
Then they see two snail wagons driving to the tower.
"Hey kids" Hop Pop says as he and Mr. Flour came to pick them up.
"Hey guys, how was your weekend?" Marcy questions.
"Great, definitely did not get swarmed by a group of fire locusts, how was your weekend" Hop Pop says.
"It was great, we definitely didn't rob a train" Polly says.
"Good, Good, so guess we should head home now huh" Hop Pop says.
Far Away from Wartwood
"What are you soldiers doing, stop goofing around" Captain Grime says
"Listen, we need a group of Toads to go collect the Tax in Wartwood swap, now go out there" Captain Grime says.
"Uh sir, what about the prisoner, should we get rid of her?" A random guard says.
'No, don't worry about her, she will start talking, eventually" Captain Grime says.
In the Cell
"Day 14 of being in this cell, it's officially been 2 weeks, I haven't eaten any of this food since it's all bugs and I feel like I'm gonna starve" Anne says in her cell.
"But hey, at least I know where Marcy is, only a matter of time before I get out" Anne says as she is holding a ripped piece of a newspaper which states Marcy's location.
"Don't worry Sasha and Marcy, I'm coming" Anne says as she looks out the window.
