Warning: Know of these characters are mine; they are from a show called Amphibia. This is an AU where instead of Anne being sent to Wartwood, Sasha in Toad Tower, and Marcy in Newtopia. Anne is in Toad Tower, Sasha is in Newtopia, and Marcy the main character of this AU is in Wartwood, Enjoy
Chapter 5: Level Up
It is 4:00 am in the Flours's household and Maddie just woke up from bed.
"Hmm, maybe if I try to mix it with one of my spells that will get it working" Maddie said in the middle of the night.
"Ugh, Maddie, are you still working on that staff, it's 4:00 am, I'm tired" Marcy said as she got up from bed.
"Of course I'm still working on it, I need to learn more about magic to reach the next level" Maddie said with a proud expression on her face.
"Wait, you're telling me there's levels to this whole curse thing… JUST LIKE A LEVEL UP SYSTEM IN A VIDEO GAME" Marcy said happily.
"Uh, I guess so, though I don't really know what a video game is" Maddie said.
"WHAT LEVEL ARE YOU, 1, 5, 10, OH I BET YOUR LIKE LEVEL 33 AT THIS POINT" Marcy says very loudly.
"Ay, Shut the heck up scare-crow" Ms. Croaker said to Marcy across Wartwood.
"Sorry Ms. Croaker" Marcy said.
"Anyways, what level are you" Marcy said to Maddie thinking she was a very high level.
"Eh, I'm only a level 1 curse user" Maddie said.
"What, you're amazing with these curses and you haven't even leveled up" Marcy said with a disappointing look on her face.
"Hey, level one is a big achievement, you start at level negative 10" Maddie said.
"Whatever, we are getting you to level 2 right now" Marcy said.
"Uh no, we are going back to bed" Maddie said.
"Oh c'mon" Marcy said sadly.
The Next Day
Marcy and Maddie are out in the woods again with Maddie's spell book and a corpse of a dead frog.
"Huh, I swear I saw this same frog like a couple of weeks ago" Marcy said.
"Eh, it's probably just a coincidence" Maddie said.
"Anyways to reach level 2, all you need to do is revive a dead corpse" Maddie said
"Ok, so what do we exactly need " Marcy said
"Uh, all we need is, oh shoot I forgot to grab the ingredients back home, Marcy do you think you can grab them back home" Maddie said.
"Sure, I'll be back in a flash" Marcy said as she ran off.
As she ran back home she saw a group of toads riding to wartwood with a spider.
"Woah, first frogs, then salamanders, now toads, this just got a lot more interesting" Marcy said while she was hiding behind a bush, just then Wally was behind her.
"Oi, whatcha doing behind a bush scare-crow" Wally said.
"Ugh, what's with people still calling me scare-crow, I thought I earned all of your respect" Marcy said.
"Just because some people respect you, it doesn't mean everyone likes you, you're still a nuisance, unlike myself" Wally said as he walked away.
"Ugh, anyways I'll just head home" Marcy said as she continued walking.
She enters the Flour's household.
"Hey, Mr. Flour" Marcy said as she walked into the house.
"Hey kid, how was it with Maddie" Mr. Flour said.
"Goo, I just need to get some ingredients, but you won't believe what I saw, I saw a group of toads riding over here, isn't that crazy" Marcy said while Mr. FLour stood there in shock.
"WAIT, TOADS, COMING HERE, but I thought we all paid our taxes why are they coming" Mr. Flour said worryingly.
"Wait, so the toads collect taxes, there's a whole government system to this thing" Marcy asked.
"There sure is, us frogs are like the peasants in this society, and although there are some frogs that live in a rich society, it's pretty rare, the newts and salamanders are the highest of them all, heck the kings is a newt, then the toads are the gladiators of the society, they fight and collect the taxes, now I think it's best for you to hide, the toads are pretty rough against new things" Mr. Flours explained.
"Alright, I'll just head upstairs then" Marcy said as she walked up the stairs.
While Marcy was walking up the stairs the Toads bust into the house.
"Alright Mr. Flour, apparently you haven't been paying yout taxes, and you know there is a price to pay '' One of the toads said.
"What, but I swear I paid my taxes" Mr. Flour explained to the toad.
"Well, the tower hasn't received your taxes so if you don't mind, we will be taking your stuff now" the toad said while all of three of the toads take his stuff.
While the toads are taking Mr. Flour's stuff, Marcy walked downstairs and stood up against the toads.
"Hey, what are you toads doing stealing this guys stuff, aren't you supposed to be collecting tax?" Marcy questioned.
"Oh wow, you must be the weird creature that was in the newspaper" One of the toads said.
"I wonder what it tastes like" Other toad questioned as they took out a sword.
"Hey buddy, I'm not very tasty so back off" Marcy said as she took out her crossbow.
"Well, we'll see about that" the toad said as they went in to attack Marcy.
Marcy tries to dodge his attacks, but the toad gets pretty close. So she uses one of her arrows with a rope to tie up that one toad's legs. The toad trips to the ground and Marcy pins an arrow at his face.
"Woah there creature, no need for violence, we'll give you your stuff back" The toad said as Marcy let him go.
"Say, you're pretty good at fighting, have you thought about joining us to collect the tax" A toad questioned.
"Oh, I don't think so" Marcy said.
"I'm just saying, if the townspeople see you with this badge, they have to respect you, anyways see you later" The toad said as he pointed at his badge and walked away.
"Hmm, you know while Maddie is out there leveling up, I think I should do the same, this could be a great opportunity" Marcy thought, but Mr. Flour stopped her.
"Listen Maddie, I know this may seem like a good idea, but it's not, alright now go back with Maddie" Mr. Flour said to Marcy.
"Don't worry Mr. Flour, I'll be fine, if thing start to get bad though, I'll bail" Marcy said as she walked out of the house.
"Hey, so um I thought about it and I would like to help collect the tax" Marcy said to the toads.
"Say no more, the names Bog, the silent one here is Mire, and Fens here you already met" Bog explained to Marcy.
"Oh cool, the names Marcy and I wouldn't mind giving you guys" Marcy said.
"That's great, all we gotta do is follow the list and visit people's house, understand" Bog told Marcy.
"Yep, now let's do this" Marcy said.
The group walk to a hut in Wartwood where Wally lives.
"Alright, the first name on the list is Wally" Bog said.
"So, exactly how does this mission work, do we just remind Wally how much he owes, or" Marcy said, but Bog, Mire, and Fens break into his house while Wally is taking a bath.
"AHH, what are you doing here!" Wally yells.
"Oh, I guess you owe the town some money" Marcy said.
"Rubbish, I may live in squalor, but I always pay my taxes" Wally explained.
"The list says otherwise, and because of that we will be taking your stuff" Bog said as Fens and Mire steal all his stuff, from his bath brush to his beetle jerky that he just bought.
"Alright that's it, c'mon guys to the next house" Bog said, but Marcy gives back Wally's beetle jerky.
The group go around house to house taking peoples stuff, and at the same time Marcy gives some of their stuff back.
"Uh Bog, are you sure everyone didn't pay their taxes: Marcy asked.
"The list says so, Marcy, we have to follow it" Bog said to Marcy.
"Alright, so who's next" Marcy asked
"Uh, Somebody named Hopediah Plantar" Bog said.
"Ok then, let's go" Marcy said.
Back in the Woods
"Marcy sure has taken a long time, I probably should go check on her" Maddie said.
As Maddie was walking back home she bumps into Sprig.
"Oh, hi Maddie, sorry for bumping into you" Sprig said.
"It's ok, but what were you doing running so fast?" Maddie asked.
"Okay, so the toads have been coming around taking peoples stuff, because apparently everyone hasn't paid their taxes, I even saw them go to Wally's house, and Wally always pays his taxes" Sprig said.
"Okay, so why are you out here?" Maddie said.
"I think the Mayor has something to do with it, he was carrying a bag of money in the woods with Toadie, and to make this all even worse, Marcy is helping the toads" Sprig said.
"WHAT, so you're telling me Marcy ditched me to hang out with those no good toads, we got to do something about it" Maddie said as she followed Sprigs.
In the Center of Wartwood
"Oh Toadie this is perfect, nobody will expect us to hide the tax money here" Mayor Toadstool said as he hid the money in his newly built statue.
Behind them though, Sprig and Maddie find them.
"I knew you were hiding something, wait till the toads here about this" Sprig said as he and Maddie ran off.
"Wait, Toadie we have to stop hime" Mayor Toadstool said as he and Toadie run after the both of them.
At Hopediah's House
"I already told you toads, I paid my ding dang taxes" Hop Pop said.
"The list says otherwise, now what shall we take that would make up for that" Bog said.
"Oh hey, how about that snail?" Fens said as he pointed at Hop Pop's snail Bessie.
"You leave Bessie out of this" Hop Pop yells.
"Yeah, or I'll rip your face off" Polly yells as she brings out her rolling pin.
"Yep, that will definitely pay for everything, Fens, Mire, Marcy, grab it" Bog said as Fens and Mire are about to take Bessie, Marcy steps up.
"STOP" Marcy yells "This has gone to far, I may want to get people respect, but doing this is wrong, so I think I'm gonna have to make the smartest decision, standing up to YOU" Marcy said as she slams her badge to ground and takes out her sword and crossbow.
"Oh, you just made the wrong decision, you know what we do to traitors Marcy, we eliminate them" Bog said as he and his crew surround Marcy and pull out their weapons.
As they start to walk up to Marcy, her eyes glow for the third time, giving herself more strength and agility. Fens goes in to attack Marcy with his mace, but Marcy dodges and Fens slams into Mire. Bog takes out his hammers and slams into Marcy, but she brings out her sword and blocks it. Shocked by her strength, Bog gets knocked to the ground, but just when Marcy thinks she won, Fens gets up and slams his mace into Marcy's back, bruising. Marcy falls to the ground and Fens uses his foot to pin Marcy to the ground while Bog gets up and pulls out his hammer again
"You got a lot of nerve doing that, now where were we?" Bog said as he is about to smash Marcy's head, Maddie comes in and uses a curse to turn the hammer to a toy duckie, and Sprig uses his slingshot to shoot Fens in the back .
"Hey, you stay away from Marcy" Maddie said as the rest of the townsfolk are behind them supporting Marcy.
"The townsfolk all paid their taxes, the mayor has been hiding the money from you and we have proof" Maddie yells at the toads.
In the Center of Wartwood Again
They all head back to Wartwood, Bog takes out his hammer and smashes the statue and they see that all the money was hidden in the statue. The townsfolk got mad.
"Oh my frog", "That no good son of a slug", "That's why I never voted for him" The townsfolk said.
"Uh, as Mayor of this town I hereby forgive myself of all my wrong doings" Mayor Toadstool said as the townsfolk threw rotten fruits at him.
Marcy and the townsfolk gather all the stuff the toads took and return the stuff to them, but Marcy's back still hurts a lot.
"If it was respect you were looking for Marcy, you sure lost mine, we'll be back, but with more of us so you better watch out" Bog said as he and his group went back to their wagon and drove off.
"Well, you may not have levelled up, but you did do something, earn the respect of the townsfolk" Maddie said to Marcy.
"Thanks, really sorry I bailed on you" Marcy said to Maddie.
"It's ok, there will always be other times, now let's go home" Maddie said to Marcy.
