Aizawa was not a fan of this mission. He was a man of logic and rationality, and this was neither of those things. He thought it was stupid, suicidal, and there was no way he was leaving his school in the hands of anyone else. But he had a very unique quirk and skill sets that made him probably the only candidate for this mission. Everyone seemed convinced it was a good plan that wouldn't get him obliterated but he had his doubts. Many, many doubts.
They wanted to lure out Midoriya with a big group of villains that he had been hunting down for years. Then, assuming he actually came to deal with this himself, Aizawa would erase his quirk and shoot him, thus ending the massive criminal empire.
This was an absolutely foolish plan.
This team had done a nauseating amount of research on the man and deduced he had both Foresight and an illusion quirk, both would greatly limit the likelihood of success. He couldn't erase a quirk if he didn't know where to look and he can't hit a target that knows exactly what he's doing. Yet, even with this knowledge they seemed convinced that they had mapped out his changing behavior and predicted that the man had seen his own death within the near future and it was Aizawa's job to make this future actually happen.
God, this was a dumb plan.
Not only was the plan dumb, but he wasn't even sure it was a good idea to kill him at this point. Sure, he unquestionably hated the man for killing his students and causing so many people pain, but getting rid of him suddenly like that would create a massive fight for dominance that could throw their currently peaceful world into chaos. Crime rates were stable and moderate, and personally, he cared a lot more about people actually being safe than whether or not they felt scared.
Heroes like Lemillion can afford to make people feel secure and protected, but he didn't think he should be responsible for their feelings. He's paid to keep people safe, and if he does that then he considers his job complete no matter how they feel about it.
Then to make matters even worse, there was a massive buildup of incredibly violent S-class villains from all over the world in a base that was in Japan. They called the base 'the fortress', because that's what it was. They'd known about it for years, it wasn't exactly subtle, but they had few heroes that would even be willing to change into that death trap. In fact it was what the man had created after escaping from prison all those years ago.
It was a massive base with just about every known method of defense, from turrets, to landmines, to patrolling nomus. And it's best to not forget the giant murderous plant monsters that live in the surrounding forest.
This was also where Midoriya generally was, along with those closest to him. Which meant they could probably throw every single hero they had and might still lose. There were few heroes that could survive machine guns, so the unspoken policy had been not to attack the building covered in them. Plus, the building was primarily ignored since it only served defensive purposes and was far enough from any city to be a direct threat to anyone.
However, it was now filled to the brim with the most dangerous people and weapons on the planet. By shifting so many resources to one spot made it seem like Midoriya was getting ready to take over the country, and with that kind of firepower he probably could do so in a couple of days.
But at the end of the day he was a hero that answered to the hero commission who was sending him on a probably deadly mission. So now here he was, laying on the roof of a building, waiting for the man to possibly show up, so that he could possibly erase his quirks before being killed by the man himself or his allies, so that his organization could possibly collapse, and hopefully not cause Japan to be taken over by an army of villains.
Fuck, he really hated his job sometimes.
There was a sudden flash of light and a crash as Midoriya entered the building of villains like a meteor. It was only him and Dabi, so that made this vaguely possible. Technically he was supposed to take the shot before they entered the building, but they had entered from a blind spot so that wasn't going to happen.
Then there was the waiting. Waiting for the moment they stepped outside after their very probable victory. The fighting had stopped, but they were still inside, and while he didn't have a clear shot, it looked to him like they were hugging, which was odd.
He stared through the scope and held his breath as the two stepped into the open and looked directly at him.
Oh fuck. They knew he was there, which is not a good sign.
Then he paused as something struck him, he was smiling with tears running down his cheek. Not exactly the look of a man about to murder him. In the next moment everything pieced together. As his quirk was erased and the illusion fell, the picture of a confident and unbeatable crime lord fell as well and left behind a tired and broken man. The reason a man who could see the future would fall into a trap. Why the most powerful man wasn't able to prevent his own death.
This wasn't an assasination, this was assisted suicide.
And as the young man gave him a kind smile he pulled the trigger twice and hoped he did right by history as the two men fell to the ground.
When he returned to base everyone stared at him in shock, it looked like he was right and nearly everyone thought he'd die or at least fail the mission. He walked up to Tensei, who had become one of the leaders for the commission's logistic division. Before he got to give his report a panicked woman ran up to them. "Sir! There's activity at the fortress, we're not sure what's happening though."
Tensei wheeled over to the monitors that were constantly watching that villainous bastion with Aizawa following close behind. He deeply hoped that he was wrong and that they didn't just send the country into chaos by killing the man keeping these monsters controlled.
But instead of his worst fears he saw something much more confusing. A giant vortex of yellow energy swirled around the complex. The most alarming thing though was their thermal camera trained on the building. The heat signatures that filled the complex to the brim were going out like candles in a storm. Whatever was happening was killing everything inside without discretion and without anyone able to fight back.
Then a single man came sprinting out the front. He was a vicious criminal that had been around for over a century. With flaming wings, the villain known as Phoenix ran across the screen and seemed to be bursting into flames over and over as he shrunk.
He watched the man with an immortality quirk be erased to nothing. He had escaped justice with his powerful quirk of resurrecting himself in a ball of fire like a phoenix would, and now they watched that process in reverse until he ceased to exist before their eyes.
His words came out in a soft whisper "Holy shit."
Nearly the entire room had frozen as they watched every light on the thermal camera go out except one.
Eri stepped outside into view and fell to her knees as tears ran down her face. Everything organic within half a mile of her disappeared into nothingness. A perfect circle in a forest where there were no trees, grass, insects, nothing. It was the most peaceful massacre he'd ever seen. There was no blood, no fighting, if they hadn't been watching they might have thought the villains had simply cleared out more of the forest and not noticed a difference.
It was the grief of a daughter left behind that had ended the lives of thousands. Did Midoriya know her grief would be so destructive? Is that why those people were there? A clean and quick way to give the heroes a chance by using the pain of a child? As the sphere of temporal destruction faded away she collapsed and fell into a purple cloud that took her away.
And that was it. There were no reporters asking for more details, no criminals to detain, no remains to bury. In that dead silent room they knew they couldn't tell anyone about this. They needed a win and it would be hard to frame beating Midoriya and his armies as a victory if they knew the heroes didn't really do most of the work. They would call it 'infighting', and leave it vague so the populace wouldn't know that a child had the power to do what they just saw.
So he went home. There was nothing else he could do, so why stay around? He basically collapsed onto his couch and his cats took that as an invitation to climb on top of him. As much as he wanted to never move from that spot, the cats decided it was time to be fed. As he stepped into the kitchen his blood went cold at the sound he heard.
Midoriya's voice cut through the silence "Hello, Aizawa."
His mind cycled through possible explanations. A faked death? A shapeshifter? A ghost? He's finally lost his mind and is hallucinating the person he just killed?
"If you're hearing this message then that means I'm dead, probably by your hand."
Oh, it's just an ominous message left by a dead man, in his kitchen. Great.
"So, there's a lot to get done and I figured an efficient man like yourself would be the perfect person to do it. Right next to this projector is a hard drive with important information that I think you'll be very interested in. The prisoners who would like to be rescued would also be thrilled for you to go through that data, since once I die that is the only place with everyone's locations."
What the actual fuck is this?
"Now, you may be wondering why I would give you this. The biggest reason though is that most of those people aren't necessarily prisoners, they work for me willingly but aren't villainous people and they don't deserve to go to jail. So when you 'rescue' them, they'll probably play up how bad their situation is to sell that they are innocent. Oh, but some actually are prisoners and I'm not telling you who is who. This is also a show of good will, in hopes that you'll help these people without revealing the possibility of their crimes."
Aizawa was feeling like he might be the only not insane person. How was this reality? Maybe he would wake up from a coma and this was all a weird hallucination.
"There should also be an invitation right next to it as well. That's very important."
He looked at the very official looking invitation for a vague conference that took place in a particularly nice hotel that had been built a few years ago.
"Obviously I can't force you to go, since the whole I'm dead thing, but I think you'd benefit from it a lot and I'm sure your curiosity is enough to get you to show up. And if curiosity isn't enough, if you show up you'll be given what you need to greatly reduce crime in the world."
Well, he wasn't entirely wrong about that. He was pretty damn curious about what this 'meeting' was and who the hell would be showing up. Plus, the idea of destroying crime was pretty appealing.
"Now, I'm sure you're wondering why I gave you, of all heroes, this information. It's because you're the kind of hero I needed when I was a kid. You have some of the lowest rates of property damage, villain death, and civilian death. You're an efficient no nonsense hero with a quirk that has absolutely no offensive qualities.
"So when little kids stare up at the news and get inspired to be just like the heroes they see save the day, I'd rather they see a hero like you instead of some bumbling muscle head. So when the press conferences and questions come around, don't deny how much you've done and how many you've saved. Let yourself be inspiring, because the world could use more Eraserheads out there and fewer All Mights or Endeavors."
Damn. He's never been so aggressively complimented in his life. But it made sense. Midoriya grew up a quirkless kid and Eraserhead is the closest thing out there to a quirkless hero. That was apparently the end of the message, and his cats kindly reminded him that he came into the kitchen for a reason other than to be given the existential crisis that comes with getting legitimate praise from a villain.
He planned to deal with whatever was on the flashdrive later, but decided to take a quick look in case anything on it was truly urgent. Even if he wanted to kick doors in and rescue people that moment, he would need to put a team together and that isn't something you can do without some planning and certainly not at 1 in the morning.
There were quite a few scientists and other people with notable skills, he could understand how these people could help move the world forward even if they worked with Midoriya. Then his entire body froze as he read the next name.
Yaoyorozu Momo.
That wasn't possible. Everyone there said they witnessed her die a brutal death.
A death that didn't leave a body.
While a man with an illusion quirk was nearby, but they didn't know that he could create illusions at the time.
Oh god, they'd left her behind and never even looked for her.
He looked at the listed location and realized just how unlikely it was to have found her without this gift from Midoriya. She was deep underground in a room that was only accessible through a portal. He suddenly stopped caring that it was three a.m. and found himself pounding on Maijima's door.
There was the sound of stumbling and something being knocked over. The door opened revealing a very groggy and tired Powerloader. "Aizawa? I know you don't sleep but the rest of us do."
"Get dressed and ready to go, something urgent came up and we're leaving right now. I'll explain on the way."
And that's how he ended up in the middle of a field at 4 am with a very stressed employee digging into the earth with other pros and medics on the way.
After a few minutes he got a response from Powerloader on coms. "I found her, and she seems to be physically fine."
"What does that mean?"
"Well… she seems fine but also is convinced that I'm a hallucination and won't listen to me. But it seems like she was treated moderately well, if I didn't know better I'd think I just walked into a 5 star hotel suite."
His horror at her being isolated to the point of insanity turned to the contrasting horror of realizing that her very gilded cage meant she might be one of the people working for Midoriya but would pretend to be a captive to escape jail time.
Within minutes Yaoyorozu had been brought to the surface by Powerloader. It had been about six years but his students were like his kids, and it hurt so badly to see that distant look on her face, like she wasn't sure if she was dreaming or not.
She also seemed to jump out of her skin at every noise, which included the approaching ambulance and police cars.
"Maijima, how about you go talk to them first and explain the situation and I'll stay with her for a minute."
The man nodded and walked off. The moment the support teacher was far enough Yaoyorozu's personality completely shifted. "Do you think I made a convincing impression of someone who was severely isolated and psychologically damaged?"
He mostly ignored her question and its implications as he pulled her into a close hug. "I'm so glad you're alive. I'm so sorry I never looked for you." He paused, "He didn't actually isolate you, right?"
"Huh? Of course not, I was with people every day, I even hung out with Mina on Tuesdays. Midoriya seemed to imply that you were in the loop?"
"Ugh, he was incredibly vague and didn't tell me you were alive until tonight."
"Yeah, that sounds about right." She took a breath and looked up at him, "Since you're here I'm assuming that means he's already dead?"
He simply nodded, unsure of how close she was to the crime lord. As paramedics walked over to them she began to switch back into her persona, then she turned to him with a smile. "I guess I'll see you at the conference next week."
"So, you really joined him."
She gave him a soft smile, "His argument was logical and would save the most lives, I'm guessing it's the same reason as when you made that deal with him to keep UA safe."
And with that someone began to walk over to them and the emptiness in her eyes returned and her once coherent speech fell apart, as if she truly hadn't seen another person in years. But at the end of the day that didn't matter, she was alive and healthy and that had to be good enough.
He understood that having a press conference was important, the people deserved to know about what's going on. But couldn't they have just sent out a memo or something? It felt like he had answered the same question thirty seven times. Yes, Midoriya is actually dead, yes, he was the one to do it, yes, they rescued a bunch of people including his student. It really didn't feel like he told them anything an email couldn't have explained.
But Midoriya had been right, no one would forget the name Eraserhead. The underground hero that no one knew anything about turned principal had killed the most deadly villain in the world. Everyone knew Midoriya's feats. He was like a force of nature that none could stop. He might as well have told them he had single handedly saved Japan from a tsunami. And it made the entire world pause and look at the tired introvert again knowing he had done what all other heroes had failed at and considered impossible.
He became a legend of sorts. The few existing videos of him fighting had gone viral and the purchase of grey scarves had shot up. There were news stories about the vengeful teacher that he found to only be vaguely accurate. But those were issues for another time. Right now he was on his way to Tokyo to go to a conference which is probably a very bad idea.
He stepped inside over an hour early in hopes of getting a better idea of who he'd be dealing with. There were many things he was expecting, but it wasn't being greeted by some variation of "Hey Sensei" by multiple people from within a large mix of villains, heroes, and civilians.
Yaoyorozu wasn't a surprise, Ashido was a slight surprise, and Tokoyami and Hagakure were a complete shock. That greeting had also been shared by Shiozaki and a few students he had taught in other years than the famous class of 1A. There were a few other heroes there, and it didn't escape his notice that all the heroes there, including himself and his students, were highly influential in some other way.
Ashido had been holding her place in the spotlight the last few years as someone who was both an effective hero and genuinely kind. She had been an advocate against more things than could count and definitely practiced what she preached.
Hagakure had become an interesting kind of hero where she remained popular like a regular hero, did interviews, and spoke with the press, but still functioned like an underground hero. She wasn't classically strong but she was near unstoppable with the ability to have masterful stealth regardless of the time of day.
Tokyami on the other hand was not well known and while he had respect among other underground heroes, few civilians knew about him, so he definitely stood out in the group. A master of combat and with speed that was shocking for someone without an associated quirk. Even more odd was the falcon resting on his shoulder. Didn't the kid's quirk now live in a falcon? That might explain why he was there even though he was far less prominent than the others. The young hero that was now going by 'The Raven' noticed their teacher's look of intrigue. "I hope you are well, Sensei. The quirk Tsukuyomi and I have put aside our differences and become friends once more, though we are content to share separate bodies."
Before he had a chance to address whatever was going on there his attention was quickly pulled to the most recent person to enter the room. The prime minister of Japan walked in with an air of confidence that made Aizawa wonder just how deep Midoriya's influence ran. How did the man feel no shame in being here when he was clearly invited by a villain even though he was expected to represent the people? Though, couldn't the same be said about himself?
With a mix of people from all walks of life, the only thing that connected them was having power in some manner and a connection to the same dead man. With plenty of time remaining the current attendants talked amongst themselves, while Aizawa just sat quietly and listened to the other conversations.
Then everyone went silent as the door opened. In walked a girl with a short horn on her head and grief in her eyes. Behind her stood Kurogiri and Kota, and at her sides were Hawks and Toga.
He wasn't sure what he expected this meeting to turn into but it surely isn't what happened. Eri took control immediately and presented herself as the new leader of their group. They would be continuing the ideals that her father left behind, that crime cannot be defeated through violence. So they would work to lessen crime by controlling it, but they would be doing so in secrecy rather than through Midoriya's more obvious methods.
In the end the plan was fairly simple, all parties would work together to subtly protect the crime lords that were part of their group and in return these criminals would keep civilian injury and death to an absolute minimum. The second aspect would be to push heroes to do the same, and those that caused the least damage would be moved towards the top hierarchy. Because while the public rankings were gone there was a need for a new chain of command without it, so a military-esc system was put in place.
He also found out that there were far more members in the country than just in that room, but they were the most important members that would be quietly leading society towards a better future. And the first step to that was to give their heroes more sway and recognition in society.
So, when they were given the information on every member of the old League of Villains that wouldn't be part of this smaller more idealistic group, that information was given to the heroic members of their group. And by turning the League of Villains into the world wide power that it was, there were few villains they couldn't find. This rocketed the heroes in the loop to the most influential positions since they were seen making arrest after arrest and eradicating corruption.
But what Midoriya had given them was even more than that. Sure, the names and locations of nearly all the criminals in the world made a massive difference, but people could move and use new names. What really toppled the underworld was the money.
Midoriya left them the information on every single account that any villain organization had access to. So the criminals of the world that existed outside of their selected members were left without the resources they would need to get those new names or move to new places.
It took about a month to capture roughly a quarter of the criminals in Japan and another 40% were found in the following year.
And this applied to all levels of crime all across the planet, whether they were a thief, a corrupt politician, or anyone else who had found protection within the League. So their members all across the world were busy catching the disbanded villains, and becoming deeply respected while doing so.
No one would ever know it, but Midoriya left behind a legacy of justice and peace, but would be remembered as an agent of chaos and destruction. And it only worked because no one ever imagined that the leader of all the villains would turn them all in. No one would have even considered the most evil man in the world to suddenly turn good. But that was the real trick. The man had been good from day one, he had simply tricked them all into seeing someone far more malicious than himself.
Years had passed since the world changed.
Aizawa was an old grizzled principal in his sixties and his years of fighting were long since over.
Nearly all criminals were controlled by their group, which had become known simply as The Organization over time. And on the other side just about every hero at the top was a part of the same group. You would be hard pressed to make it far in the industry if your ideals clashed with theirs or if you were against them in any way.
He was getting some snacks at a convenience store, he'd never been able to break his bad eating habits, when three men pulled their quirks on the cashier demanding the money in the cash register.
One man had a scythe transformation and another seemed to have some sort of poison quirk while the third was a mystery, but it was probably a mental quirk with the way his hands were on his temples.
The man behind the counter calmly handed the money over.
Aizawa saw tattoos on their necks, it looked like a cobra or some other cliche gang symbol. They were part of a street gang that he had helped manage and create. But they themselves had no idea that the man they followed worked for someone who was part of The Organization. They'd probably never even heard of the people they worked for indirectly, since only their boss's boss actually knew anything of importance. He wondered how surprised they would be that their boss's boss reported to the man not ten feet away from them buying jelly packets. They were clearly grunts, so they probably didn't even know that their boss reported to someone.
They took the money and ran into the busy street and took off. There were heroes nearby and they did their jobs, which was saving people. In this case they did this by keeping civilians away from them and keeping an eye out for any quirk attacks so they could neutralize the threat.
Not a single person was injured and the only loss was five hundred dollars that was insured by the government to make sure store owners didn't feel the need to fight criminals. It was unlikely anyone would hunt them down unless they made a habit of things like this or escalated past petty theft. But their gang leader would probably keep an eye on them to make sure their escapades didn't get out of hand. And if something ended up needing to be done about them, they had their address, so there was no need for a fight in the streets.
He knew that none of this would have been possible without the League of Villains existing and then taking every other criminal with it when it collapsed. Sure, the system was corrupt and they were letting these thieves walk free, but it worked and it kept people safer.
It was in that moment that Aizawa realized that Midoriya had truly won all those years ago. He got exactly what he wanted even if he hadn't lived to see it.
No one else would die over a cash register and it was all because of a kid who refused to let things stay as they were.
I hope you liked seeing Aizawa's perspective and having an ending where Midoriya still got everything he wanted regardless of dying. If you were upset that this chapter glossed over a lot, don't worry, I plan on adding the story of Eri as an immortal crime lord with Kota at her side. It wouldn't be nearly as long or anytime soon since I wouldn't start until I finish at least one of my current stories.
Anyways, I really like how this story turned out in the end. I hope you all liked it too since I definitely put my heart and soul into it.
