It was said that one should never judge a book by its cover, that appearances and first impressions aren't everything. But in truth, experience often says that when you see someone, even for the first time, you can sense a sort of vibe that signals what kind of person they are.
Sometimes it's minor, like Kakashi's speed or Sakura's strength, and sometimes it's major like Orochimaru's cruelty or Gaara's killer instinct. It's the feeling that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, your muscles tense, your fight or flight instinct on standby ready to react in an instinct. One look at a person and you just know that this person could be dangerous, it's just a question of how.
And in looking at the newcomer in the trenchcoat, Kakashi and Jiraiya were getting that exact feeling from him. Even without his sharingan, Kakashi would have been able to detect the aura of power that this individual emitted. If anything, it was a question of in what way was he not dangerous?
The man looked at them with a bemused smile, like the kind an adult would give when patronizing a child. He brushed his hair away in a manner that made it look like he was adjusting an unseen hat. "Good evening to you, it is nice to see that the ninja arrived, though you were cutting close to the deadline." He paused to give a formal bow. "My name is Riku, I trust you brought Hyuuga Hinata with you?"
"Why do you want her so badly?" Kakashi asked. If this demon was willing to talk then perhaps he could be reasoned with. Or at least provide them with some answers.
"I believe I asked you first." Riku replied, removing his trenchcoat and letting it fall to the ground. Underneath he wore a simple tank top and pants with a belt, nothing striking or out of the ordinary. But he did reveal wings and a tail, very much like what Hinata had warned them about on the trip here. He did some flexing and popping some joints, like he was eager to do some fighting if they were going to provoke him.
'He's confident, his stance shows there isn't a doubt in his mind that he could overwhelm us in a fight.' Kakashi thought. 'That must be why he's not initiating, he's so confident that he won't lose that he sees no reason to make it start. He's humoring us.'
This told Kakashi two things at once. First, that he was dealing with a powerful opponent who was used to winning. Second, that Riku was a proud individual, and pride could be exploited.
"However-" Riku said suddenly. "-you did come all this way and I've had a really good time recently, so I'll be generous and answer you. The basic summary is this Hinata offended our mother. The how and why are not really your concern, but we intend to make sure our mother has the chance to get her payback personally. We have no quarrel with you or your comrades. Simply provide us with Hinata and we will be on our way."
Kakashi hesitated, trying to think of a way to both keep this demon occupied and keep him talking. The longer he was delayed, the longer the others could recover. Jiraiya wasn't as young as he used to be and needed a break to get his second wind, and odds were good that Sakura was tending to the others at the moment.
"From what I've heard of your mother, she has no problem getting into Konoha if she wants. So why drag us out here? For that matter, why does she need her children to get Hinata for her?" Kakashi asked. "Is your mother not strong enough to do any of this for herself?"
Riku looked amused and gave a mild chuckle. "Oh no, she's the picture of health. Our father is helping her get stronger each day. I'm just being a dutiful son and delivering the object of ire."
"Did your mother happen to mention that Hinata freed her from her imprisonment? That she willingly shared her body and energy, and that she only drew the line when Lilith wanted her to have sex with someone she didn't know or love?"
Riku arched an eyebrow and shrugged his shoulders. "That is irrelevant to me."
"Not to us." Kakashi threw back. "You got your mother back, Lilith has her freedom, let's call it even and end this now."
The incubus shook his head. "This ends one of two ways. Either you give me Hinata willingly or I drag her away over your corpses. In either case, I am not leaving without her."
There was a flash of smoke behind Kakashi but he didn't dare look behind himself. He just hoped that whatever Jiraiya was doing, it would help them.
Before Jiraiya were the two toad elders Fukasaku and Shima. "Jiraiya-chan, this is unexpected. How dangerous is the situation?"
"Undetermined but nearly bijuu level. We need to start the process now. Kakashi, buy me some time." The toad sage replied.
Kakashi nodded, then the two toads got on Jiraiya's shoulders before he retreated into darkness somewhere in the village.
Riku saw the older shinobi flee and shook his head. "Humans, always running when they are confronted by someone with a bigger stick than them." With a sigh he refocused his attention on Kakashi. "Alright, if he can get away then let him. I guess you and I should fight now."
Kakashi looked unintimidated. "If you wanted to fight, you would have made the first strike."
Riku crossed his arms and laughed. "No, not really my style. I prefer to make the first move in the bedroom, not the battlefield." He smirked as if proud of himself. "But if you insist, it just means the battle will be over that much quicker." He cracked his neck from side to side. 'I'll show my lovely lady that her help was quite profitable.'
The incubus ran at the cycloptic jounin, not moving too fast. Honestly Kakashi was sure he would have been able to see him even without an active sharingan, but that wasn't the problem. Riku came in close and swung a fist, looking rather amateurish in how he did so. Clearly for Riku taijutsu was not his specialty. Kakashi moved faster and used his arm to deflect the fist and in doing so create an opening for himself to use.
The impact upon hitting Riku's fist was a pain unlike any Kakashi had ever felt before. And that was including losing his original eye. He felt the bones in his arm shatter and shatter some more, his muscles rendered to ribbons, and his skin tear off with some of the flesh under joining it. He felt like Tsunade had just punching him in the lower arm at full strength. He collapsed to his side, so overcome with pain that he lost the ability to stand, and clutched his arm screaming in pain. All that time training to endure pain, all for nothing in this one moment. Looking at his left arm he saw a limb that looked like it had been holding an explosive that went off prematurely. His hand and lower arm were completely gone, ripped right off, and he wasn't sure if he still had an elbow anymore.
Worst part was this wasn't Riku hitting him, not directly at least.
Riku saw this and didn't follow up, merely looking down at the injured jounin. "My, that was better than I thought. I'm going to thank Kanna quite vigorously later when all this is done."
Using chakra, Kakashi numbed the pain enough to try and think rationally again. 'This is bad, really bad. I only have so many one-handed jutsu to use and now my taijutsu is compromised. What can I do to hurt him before he gets to anyone else?'
Riku looked like he was thinking something over then shrugged. "Ah hell, why not?" His hands glowed a strange aqua blue then before Kakashi could object, Riku reached down and touched his arm. There was suddenly a sudden chill, like he had submerged himself in ice water (which he had done before involuntarily back in the Land of Snow) followed by the muscle equivalent of brain freeze, but to Kakashi's surprise his arm healed right before his eyes. Actually 'healed' was putting it lightly, his severed flesh and bones were reattaching themselves like some kind of puzzle being put together by unseen hands.
Kakashi flexed his fingers and looked at the demon who simply smiled and stepped back.
"There, be grateful human. I didn't have to do that, and under most circumstance I would have just slit your throat and left you to die." The gleam in his eye showed that he meant every word he said. "However, it has been quite some time since I had a good fight."
Kakashi scrambled to his feet and backed away, checking his arm. "An honorable demon, never heard of one of those before." He said as he made a fist to test his strength and mobilitiy.
Riku chuckled. "Be grateful, unlike my siblings I like giving my opponent a fair chance. But that's your one free pass, no second helping. So then shinobi, show me how you really fight when your life in on the line."
In another part of Land of Fire, Team Ten was caught in another life or death battle against powerful opponents as well. Rumors of Akatsuki in the country had been going around, clearly on the look for Naruto, and Team Ten had been doing part of the investigation since information gathering was a specialty of theirs. Now, after the threat to Hinata, Tsunade had been able to pinpoint their location and sent Team Ten to try and incapacitate them if possible. To be more assured, Tsunade had Kiba and Shino be included, but not Kurenai since she was currently getting some medical check ups.
Now here they were, squared off against Kakuzu of Taki and Hidan of Yuu, highly aggressive and resilient weapon users. Asuma had only been able to give the chuunin an basic summary of the two, not knowing enough on how best to defeat them. Kakuzu started the fight, unleashing several of his minions to target the chuunin. Asuma and Shikamaru partnered up to take on Hidan.
"What are these things?" Kiba asked as he and Akamaru tore at what looked like a patchwork bird creature made of black threads wearing a mask. Chouji was kept busy by a similar entity shaped like a person and Shino and Ino were trying to counter another that walked on four legs.
"They can take a beating, that's for sure." Chouji commented, using enlarged fists to crush his target but it sprang back after taking a hit.
"These beings possess chakra, but each is unique." Shino warned, using his insects to inspect them close and weaken them. "These three have different elemental natures, but they all came from the same source."
"So? It's not impossible for an experienced ninja to use more than one element." Ino remarked, using a kunai to cut the threads trying to capture her. These things moved like animals, but the loose threads still tried to ensnare anyone who got close.
The ground rumbled and everyone moved, in doing so they saw Kakuzu casting an earth jutsu at them. Apparently he wasn't going to let his puppets be the only ones fighting.
"Nice try, but not nice enough." Kiba warned, getting close to Akamaru. The two did their two-headed wolf jutsu and went right for the missing Taki nin, who looked eager to face them head on. The bird entity that Kiba had been fighting came for Shino and Ino now.
"Maybe this will help." Ino thought, making some hand seals. "Mind Transfer Jutsu."
Her body went limp and her jutsu connected with the bird creature. However, it had no mind for her to transfer to, just emptiness. As if she had tried to possess a mannequin. Fortunately though, the jutsu would quickly cancel itself out if she had no body to transfer to.
But, to her surprise, her body got up on its own, without her mind in it. Her body looked at itself, as if making sure everything was already, then smiled.
"Yes, this will do." Her voice said as she stood up, then ran into the woods.
"INO?!" Chouji shouted, shocked beyond belief, though his surprise would have to wait as the fight continued.
Yui was normally a very confident and sassy succubus. After all, she was a demon princess and her father Aru had personally gifted her with one of the best powers to offer in the demon realm.
She had the power to wound her attacker without ever having to attack them herself. All she had to do was let them hit her and they would feel the damage they had inflicted. Sure, she could feel the pain too, but she had a strong endurance and healing factor, she could withstand practically anything in the world short of total obliteration. Most of her enemies were the 'dish it out but can't take it' type, forcing them to stop since they were more likely to kill themselves before killing her.
She delighted in tormenting others both on and off the battlefield. To spend an evening in her bed was to risk one's life. In the demon realm, she was in charge of the prisoners in the dungeons of her father's castle, and the prisoners there never lasted long under interrogation from her.
But the whiskered shinobi, now with red eyes and sharp teeth, he was an enigma. He knew what her power was, but he kept attacking anyway. He slashed at her, his nails sharp like claws which she was sure they weren't before, and he got all around her with shadow clones.
She couldn't get anywhere without getting a punch or kick or scratch, making her wince more and more. After a bit she revealed her wings and took to the air to get away from the orange-clad ninja.
To her surprise, the clones used each other as momentum to jump at her and keep going, some even throwing kunai and shuriken at her.
'This is absurd. Does he not feel pain at all? How can he endure all this?' She thought, flying away while trying to keep an eye out for Naruto. With all the clones she couldn't see the original and each one that attacked her disappeared after the fact, but more were created in its place.
"How can you keep this up? Are you not human? Do you not bleed?" She asked, dodging as much as she could.
"Of course I do! But a little pain is not enough to stop me!" Several clones replied at once, two of them thrusting rasengans at her wings.
She spun in the air in an aileron roll but one of the chakra orbs did impact her wings and tore through the membrane. She ended up crashing on the ground, and since that technically was the fault of gravity and not an enemy attack Naruto did not receive any damage from it.
Sakura watched all this while treating Hinata, who was recovering well. Yui's power transferred pain rather than actual injury so recovery was surprisingly easy for a medic to treat. 'How is Naruto doing all this and able to keep going? Sure, pain can't kill, but a large enough amount of it can trigger other conditions that could lead to death. At some point he should hit a limit and be unable to take more.'
Hinata winced and slowly rose to her feet. "Thanks Sakura, I should be fine now." She looked over the fight. "Naruto-kun looks like he's got this one covered."
Sakura nodded. "He's good at taking hits. If this demon's power revolves around hurting the opponent indirectly, it's not going to work when she's fighting someone who's used to getting hurt and can survive two assassination jutsus to the chest."
Hinata nodded then looked to the pinkette. "We should find the others. There's still that one we encountered first, any idea where he went?"
"I think Kakashi-sensei and Jiraiya-sama are fighting him now. So, we should go for the third." Sakura offered.
"Rimona, you know these guys the best and they are still your siblings. Would you like to take charge of this?" Hinata asked.
"No way, that's a bad idea. They don't know I'm involved and that's how I want it to stay. The last thing I need is for them to find me."
Hinata shook her head for Sakura's benefit. "She's only here for advice and support, not to fight for me."
Suddenly a shadow fell over both Sakura and Hinata, they turned their heads to see Touma leaping at them. The two women scrambled out of the way just in time when the orange-haired incubus landed in the spot where they had just been, leaving a small crater.
Yui internally sighed with relief at the arrival of her beastly brother. As she swooped over and landed gracefully next to him. "Dearest brother, you actually came when you were needed." She cooed as she patted his head, making note of the blood on his clothing and the quickly healing but still present wounds. "By now our other brother will be making short work of your adult helpers, Leaf shinobi."
"Not before we make short work of you." Naruto said with a snarl, his eyes glowing a bright red as he took a menacing step forward.
Yui felt a slight twinge of fear. "Touma, sic him!" She shouted with a snap of her finger.
In an instant Touma's eyes narrowed, then he roared like a rabid bear and charged at Naruto, pummeling through the clones that stood in his way as if they were nothing but paper-mâché dolls.
Yui smirked, she would let the two of them duke it out and give her a break from those damned clones and their ceaseless attacks. She then turned her eyes towards Hinata and Sakura, who instantly dropped into fighting stances.
"We know your secret, you have no tricks left." Sakura declared confidently, taking out a kunai that had a slight glean to it.
"Oh I don't, do I?" Yui taunted, seeing the kunai. "Do you think I became one of the most powerful succubi in the world by being a one trick pony?"
With a smile, Yui dashed forward and grabbed both sides of Sakura's head before pulling her into a possessive kiss. Sakura went rigid from shock and Hinata silently gasped in surprise.
"Oh crap, I forgot about this." Rimona said, sounding concerned. "Hinata, make that girl incapable of moving as fast as you can."
Unsure what to do, and hesitant to strike Sakura without knowing more, Hinata chose to reach for the kunai that the pinkette had dropped when Yui kissed her. The glean caught her eye and she could detect a minor smell on it similar to walnut. 'It's poisoned. Sakura must have intended to use poison against her thinking the poison couldn't hurt them both, just her.'
Yui released the kunoichi who looked dazed but somewhat pleased, as if drugged and enjoying it. "Do me a favor and take down that white-eyed girl. But don't kill her, I need her alive."
"As you wish m'lady." Sakura replied, sounding a lot like her old days of supporting Sasuke, then she turned to the Hyuuga heiress and threw a punch at her.
"What are you doing Sakura?" Hinata dodged, putting away the kunai since she didn't want to use it on a comrade.
"This is Yui's special power." Rimona stated. "I'm sorry Hinata, I was only thinking about what powers that Aru had given her and the others. I completely forgot that she had abilities before that."
"Speak faster." Hinata advised, trying to get Sakura in her range to take her down quickly. Sadly Sakura's fighting style meant that being in her range was just as risky, so this would boil down to which kunoichi got in the lucky shot first.
"Alright, you already know about the aiyokugan right? Well Yui can basically do the same thing with her kiss, except in her case she's not limited to the opposite sex. She's one of those rare succubi who can affect both men and women. And when she kisses someone, for a brief time, she can control them. Basically your friend right now is in a trance where she's the sub and Yui's the dom, so she's obeying whatever order she's given. It will wear off, but I can't say for certain when."
Frowning, Hinata dodged a punch and took a deep breath. 'I better not risk it being too long then.' She stepped in, putting herself in a now-or-never situation, and lashed out with as many juuken strikes as she could to the medic nin.
Sakura dry-heaved, went rigid, and collapsed on her back twitching mildly, but was otherwise fine.
"Wow, not bad girl." Yui complimented with small applause from behind Hinata. "I didn't think you'd have it in you, but either way that's one less person to fight us so still a win for me."
Hinata glared at the daughter of Lilith. "You made a mistake Yui, you forced me to loose my restraints. Now, I'm going to go all out."
Fighting against Touma felt familiar to Naruto. A brutal overpowered opponent coming at him with intent to kill, it was like Gaara before he had completely let Shukaku loose that time in the woods. Naruto spammed him with clones and taijutsu when he could, trying to provoke the incubus into showing all his tricks. And strangely, Touma was showing a lot of tricks.
Some clones were killed by slashes across their bodies.
One was pierced by Touma's tail as if he were a scorpion.
One got bitten, and in the brief moment before dispellment it felt as if a shark were the one doing it.
Two were killed by spit, which burned their faces and forced them to dissolve.
'Sheesh, it's like fighting several different animals all at once. This feral guy doesn't just fight like a beast, he uses whatever dirty trick beasts use to fight with too.' Naruto concluded, trying to form a rasengan with a clone. 'My best chance is to hit him hard enough that he stays down.'
The chakra orb became ready, Naruto and his clone went in from behind. As long as Touma was distracted, he would have fewer chances to defend himself, and Naruto was hoping that the incubus's animal powers could be bypassed if he was caught unaware. It was a long shot but it was the best one he had right now.
With Touma tearing through clones like a lion through paper, Naruto jumped in and pounced at his open back, thrusting out his most powerful attack. Touma could hear this and tried to see it, but the clones kept him occupied. Still, as the whiskered blonde got in close Touma's tail lashed out and extended, wrapping around his ankle. Before Naruto could realize what had happened, Touma's tail thrashed around against the ground, repeatedly smashing Naruto into it hard enough to crack the surface. While this happened, Naruto was forced to let go of the rasengan and all but threw it away where it hit a building. The chakra orb must have hit a load-bearing beam since part of the walls collapsed after that.
After at least five smacks into the ground, Touma released him to focus on the clones. Naruto himself was on his stomach sprawled out, feeling so much pain everywhere that it was practically cancelling itself out and making him numb. He was completely certain that numerous bones were broken, and if he was really unlucky an organ or two were ruptured, but already his excellent healing was getting to work.
Question was, would it work fast enough?
His arm healed, Kakashi tried all sorts of ways to fight against Riku, trying to gauge what would get results against the incubus. He started with ranged ninjutsu, not wanting to get back into close range combat again if it could be avoided. Riku defended himself by mostly dodging or breaking something around him and using it to take the attack. He even stomped on the ground hard enough to make a portion break away and used that to cut off an earth jutsu Kakashi had aimed at him.
'He's trying to intimidate me. He could fight me off but he's trying to tell me that a fight between us is futile.' Kakashi told himself. 'But it's not, he's holding himself back. He's treating this as a game, underestimating me. I've dealt with many opponents who made the same mistake, so I know what to do about it.'
Kakashi felt his mind going fuzzy, he tried to ignore it but the sensation was getting stronger. To the point where he couldn't see anything for a bit except a blue-black haze. Then he could see, and he saw himself surrounded by water in between four giant amphibians dressed like samurais.
'What the hell?' He asked himself, certain this was a genjuts. He tried to release himself but it wasn't working.
Then the imagery faded and he was back in the streets of Dejima, with Jiraiya standing over him. Only now he looked somewhat different, with some toadish features and two toads on his shoulders. The toads coughed and scratched their throats, looking rather uncomfortable.
"Sorry about that kid, but there was no way to do that without effecting you too." Jiraiya said.
"What did you do?" Kakashi asked, glancing to Riku who was kneeling on the ground with a dazed look in his eyes. Like he was somewhere between knocked out and drugged.
"A toad genjutsu that is very difficult to get right. I needed you to keep him busy so he couldn't stop us before we could trap him. But now that he is trapped, this fight is as good as over."
"Seal him away quickly Jiraiya. A spawn of Lilith is better off imprisoned." Fukasaku stated.
"I'm on it." The toad sennin replied, taking out a scroll and a brush. The incubus wobbled a bit, making him stop for a moment, but it seemed to be just a reflex. Cautious but confident, he went up to his captive and readied the seal.
All of a sudden, Riku reached out and grabbed his forearm, clutching it with enough force that Jiraiya was certain both bones were broken. Worried, he looked down and saw Riku looking right at him, eyes focused and mouth formed into a grin.
"Gotta admit, that was a nice try." Riku complimented, then pulled on the arm.
Jiraiya's body did not keep ahold of it in return.
Kakashi watched in horror as one of the strongest ninja in Konoha just got his arm ripped right off. The flesh tore at the right elbow with bones snapping and being ripped out as well, blood bursting out. Jiraiya yelled and stepped away, clutching his new wound. Fukasakua and Shima expressed pain as well, getting some from their bond to their summoner, and were forced to detach themselves.
"But we incubi and succubi are dream demons, and using illusion against us is futile." Riku added, taking the severed limb and turning it around before smacking it against Jiraiya's face, literally backhanding him with his own hand. Then he tossed it behind him, sailing over the rooftops of the buildings into parts unknown.
"We need some of the heavy artillery here Jiraiya." Fukasaku warned. "Wait here while I go get it."
Shima nodded, remaining so that her husband could have an anchor to this place without needing Jiraiya to resummon him. She immediately went to tending to Jiraiya's wound while Fukasaku disappeared in a puff of smoke.
"You want to know what's really funny here humans?" Riku asked, amused. "I still haven't shown you my full strength. Your kind usually just aren't worth it."
Just then, everyone in Dejima felt a surge of pressure and a sense of dread, and in the distance there was a faint red glow.
Kakashi smirked. "Oh yeah, well you're about to be proven wrong."
