Well, I saw a piece of fan art depicting Mipha corrupted by one of Ganon's blights, so I thought I might run with the idea and see how things turn out. This the result, enjoy!
This was it. The last Divine Beast about to be saved. He had saved it for last at the recommendation of Rhoam's ghost, but by this point, there was so much more behind it than a simple suggestion. Memories of her plagued his mind as he walked down the solemn corridors of Vah Ruta. Her sweet smile and gentle voice haunted him with reminders of his own failure. The one woman he truly loved,
Gone.
The truth of the matter was that he was afraid. He could hardly stand to see the ghostly figures of the others, and he knew better than anyone that he would break the moment he saw her. He hadn't been there for her on that day. In her greatest time of need, he failed her.
He sat on the stone floor of the beast, pondering what would happen next. Unlike all of the others who had supplied voices of guidance throughout their beasts, Mipha had remained silent throughout the ordeal. Leaving nothing but the soft whirs and clicks of various mechanisms in the grand machine.
'Perhaps she truly does feel betrayed,' he thought. Maybe she despises me for what I did. He had read through the pages of her diary, the phrase "I am doomed" lingered in his mind as he reminisced on his failure to her. A cruelly ironic statement, in a way he thought perhaps he really had doomed her to this fate. But there was no point in worrying about it now. He knew that what would be done here today would free her from any more pain he might cause her.
He approached the control terminal, and touched the ancient tablet he carried to its matching face. Oddly enough, no issues came when this occurred. No malice, not even a Blight. He was slightly disappointed, having hoped to rain hell itself onto her murderer.
That's when he heard footsteps. Small and dainty, yet unmistakable in their sound. He turned to face the newcomer, only to be met with possibly his worst nightmare.
Mipha stood there in front of him, or at least the creature appeared to resemble her. Something had obviously gone terribly wrong. Malice oozed from a large gash in her back, evidently a stab wound from her duel with one of Ganon's vile creature. An amalgamation of eyes and scarred flesh ran across her once elegant tail fin atop her head. Each seemed to look in another direction than the other, much like those of a spider or insect. Her arm, once small and delicate, had been replaced with a bulging mass of oozy malice, carrying with it a large trident not unlike that of a Guardian's.
Link took the first step, walking closer to her. An expression grew upon his face. Not one of fear or disgust, but of astonishment and hopefulness. For the first time since he had awoken from the Shrine of Resurrection, he spoke.
"Mipha?" He spoke that name with more meaning and emotion than perhaps he had ever spoken anything in his life. She turned to face him, a solemn look on her distorted and corrupted face. She tilted her gaze away from him and replied.
"Leave." The words hurt more than any Lynel or Hinox ever could. He felt as though someone had just ripped his heart from his chest and served it to him on a plate. Mipha continued.
"You don't need Ruta to kill Ganon. Once your work is done I shall disappear from this world." She spoke kindly, but Link couldn't help but notice a hint of disdain in her words. He stood his ground, refusing to leave her side.
"You're alive, but the others... how?" He asked her, and a small smile appeared on her face. But it was in no way genuine. No, this was a smile meant to hold back tears.
"I held on against that creature for so long, hoping that you might come back for me. My healing powers gave me that luxury, but the other one never came." Her facade was breaking, with Link beginning to realize what had truly happened. And it tore him to pieces.
"I gave up, I surrendered. I realized there was no point in waiting for someone who would never truly feel the way I did. It took me, used me until I sealed it inside myself. We became one in the same. I can feel it, Link. It fills me with so much anger. I can't hold back much longer." Link walked towards her, hope gleaming in his eyes.
"I can stop it, let me help you! The Master Sword could destroy the curse!" Mipha turned away from him, walking to the edge of the room.
"It's no use. The creature controls my healing power. It can simply regenerate itself the moment you strike it. You must go kill Ganon. You must kill me." He couldn't, and he would never be able to. Ganon could wait for as long as he needed, for he would give whatever it took to save his beloved.
"I won't leave you behind. I promised your family I would bring you home, and that's exactly what I intend to do." She sighed turning to face him. Her body began to glow a dim purple as the malice overtook her body.
"Then I'm afraid there is nothing I can do. I'm so sorry for this, my love." Suddenly, her form was set ablaze with Ganon's power as she leapt into the air, now levitating. Link was at a loss, there was no way he was going to be able to bring himself to kill her, not even with Ganon's creature coursing through her veins.
With the speed of a bullet, she fired a rain of ice shards at him. Link was barely able to doge to incoming attack, as he was forced to resort to the use of a Flamesword to neglect it. She scowled at him, raw anger boiling through her form.
"You always had eyes for her, didn't you? Even now, you use that armor, my vow of infatuation for you as a simple tool to get to her!" It was as if her confessions were fueling her power, as soon after she was done talking, she summoned a mighty hailstorm from the pool beneath them. The force of its collision throwing Link into the wall.
I-I had my duty to her as the Appointed Knight! I never chose this path!" This only seemed to anger her further, as she shot her spear at Link. It sharply collided with his shield, smashing the thing into pieces.
"You're duty as a knight?! Is that what you are? Her precious knight in shining armor?!" Her attacks were becoming more and more frantic as she continued, obviously the subject was affecting her focus on the battle.
"I was a princess too! Where was my knight in shining armor when that creature came to Ruta, huh? WHERE WAS HE?!" Link knew the answer, and it pained him simply to think about it. All that time she was praying for him to save her life, he was too busy running away from the chaos with Zelda. But he knew he would not make that same mistake again. Not today, not ever.
"He couldn't be there... he was too much of a fool to realize what was most important to him. But he's here now, and he won't ever leave your side again, I swear!" He unclipped his weapons from his back, and walked towards the burning figure. The once brightly lit flames had died down, and she had lowered herself to his level.
"You promised me back then that you would always protect me, and now it's my turn to return the favor. There are things that I didn't understand back then, and I was a fool for it. But when I realized the truth, and that I would most likely never see you again, it broke my heart. So I promise you right now, from the bottom of my heart, Mipha," he cupped her cheek, as her eyes began to widen at the sudden realization of what he was going to say.
"I love you."
She broke. No longer able to hold back her tears, and fell into his arms. At last, the pair embraced as they poured their hearts out to each other. For the first time in a hundred years, Mipha felt safe.
Suddenly, the malice began to recede. Flesh wounds were healed and as the creature that had haunted her body for so many years was destroyed. Perhaps her knight had come to her after all.
